Courtside blog: N.C. State 79, UM 77 (F-OT)

RALEIGH -- OK, the game is about to get underway. I'll be here with my thoughts during the game. Feel free to chime in.

FIRST HALF...
- UM coach Frank Haith has gone with a small starting lineup against N.C. State's big team: Guards Lance Hurdle, Jack McClinton, James Dews with forward Ray Hicks and center Anthony King.
- 15:23 left, NCST 8, UM 5: The game started the way UM wanted. Miami took its first four shots from inside the paint, hitting three. King scored twice on post moves to put UM up 5-0. But the Canes have once again turned to taking jump shots and once again has cooled. The Wolfpack have gone on a 8-0 run and Miami is getting in early foul trouble.
- 11:45 left, NCST 16, UM 13: State 11-0 run finally ended when Ray Hicks rebounded and laid in a bad shot by Eddie Rios, who still looks uncomfortable being out there. Moment's later, Hicks dunked over Brandon Costner to make it 11-9. King has since paced Miami with back-to-back buckets. The Hurricanes have scored 12 of their 13 points inside the paint. Foul alert: James Dews and Jimmy King both have two fouls.
- 7:02 left, NCST 31, UM 19: State went on another run, this time 9-1, before Lance Hurdle's three-point play with 9:11 remaining. State has connected on four big three-pointers early in the first half and its helped open up the floor inside. For all the talk about Miami's poor shooting, the Hurricanes finally hit their first jumper with 8:23 remaining, an 18-footer by James Dews from the wing.
- 3:51 left, NCST 34, UM 23: It seems everytime Miami starts to claw back into the game, the Wolfpack hit a big three. This time after a 4-0 run, Courtney Fells hits a three with 4:20 left to extend the N.C. State lead back to 11.
- 1:18 left, NCST 35, UM 27: Wow -- that was funny. The crowd just booed loudly. The reason: Barry Manilow's concert scheduled for Sunday night in Raleigh has been postponed due to inclement weather.
- HALF, NCST 36, UM 27: The Wolfpack have connected on 5 of 9 from three-point range and are shooting 52.2 percent from the field. UM is 11 of 31 from the field and is 0-for-5 from three-point range. The Hurricanes have outrebounded State, 19-16, outscored them in the paint 14-8 and outscored State in second-chance points 6-0. Translation: Miami isn't doing so bad. They just can't hit baskets.

SECOND HALF...
- 15:52 left, NCST 43, UM 35:
Miami started the half strong -- especially Hicks who has been playing out of his mind tonight. But once again turnovers and some poor outshooting is killing UM. Jack McClinton is now 2-of-9 from the field and 0-for-5 from three-point range. Hicks has six points in the second half and a team-leading 13 in the game.
- 13:12 left, NCST 46, UM 45: Miami has gone on an 8-0 run to climb right back into the game. The Hurricanes have taken turns scoring in the pos. Haith has talked for a long time about Miami becoming a post team. They look like one now.
- 10:40 left, NCST 52, UM 51: Welcome back, Jack. McClinton's back-to-back three-pointers finally gave Miami its first lead with 11:31 remaining since UM scored the first five points of the game. An interesting development a few minutes ago when Dwayne Collins picked up his second foul. Collins took a shoulder to the chest afterward from Gavin Grant. Officials didn't see it. Miami's big men are picking up a ton of fouls. That could be the story late in this game.
- 7:21 left, UM 55, NCST 54: Jimmy Graham's offensive rebound and stick-back has given UM the lead again. McClinton is starting to heat up for the Canes, who have outplayed N.C. State's big men in the second half.
- 5:11 left, UM 61, NCST 58: Lance Hurdle has fouled out. The Hurricanes had a five-point lead with 5:45 remaining.
- 3:30 left, UM 65, NCST 64: How about a shout out to former Miami Dr. Krop standout Javi Gonzalez. The freshman's three-pointer with 4:48 to play tied the score at 61. UM has now retaken the lead at 65-64 on another Jack McClinton jumper.
- 2:26 left, UM 68, NCST 66: If you don't like Jack McClinton's game, then something is wrong with you. This guy has icewater in his veins. Another big shot -- a three-pointer with 2:50 left -- to give UM the lead again.
- 1:25 left, UM 72, UM 69: How many big shots can McClinton hit? Another three to give UM the lead again. Then, Graham draws a charge on Ben McCauley before hitting one of two free throws to give UM a three-point lead.
- 17.7 left, UM 72, NCST 72: High drama in Raleigh. Canes have the ball and are now tied after Hicks made a foolish mistake fouling Gavin Grant on his way to the basket. Grant hit the free throw and the game is tied.
- End of regulation, UM 72, NC ST 72: Can't explain what happened there in the final 45 seconds except to think the Canes blew their opportunity. McClinton put up a bad three-point shot. King got the rebound then forced a bad shot. N.C. State had a chance to win, but Courtney Fells' three-pointer rattled out right before time expired. Let's see how UM handles overtime.

I know you probably want to talk more about basketball...but I can't help it, I'm a football fan like most in Florida. Any news on the NW situation with the transcripts?

Manny gained a lot of respect and probably earned himself a couple new followers with his am q&a session the other night -- i count myself among those. Great work Manny and Go CANES!

Manny,

Do you think the new hires will help us sway any recruits, and have you talked to any of the commits or players about there new coaches?

A: Been told repeatedly there will not be any problems and the Northwestern kids will begin taking classes on Tuesday. Until I hear otherwise, I'll keep reporting that.

REPUTATION PRECEDES U

Manny, what's the reason the basketball team started so slow in the last 2 games? I know defense is very important, but it doesn't look like they put too much emphasis on the offense. It seems when Miami goes against a good defense they struggle. We don't have a natural shooter except for McClinton. What are your thougts on this. I'm begining to lose faith on them, and starting to believe the critics.

Hey Manny any Ideas on the remaining Scholli we have in Basketball?

What are your feelings on the Ramon Buchanon situation, do U think he sticks?

Hey Manny. Any word on the kids that are in town this weekend? Also, Young a good hire? Maybe attract some recruits?

Q: Do you think the new hires will help us sway any recruits, and have you talked to any of the commits or players about there new coaches? Posted by: Cane Since 1982 | January 19, 2008 at 08:16 PM

A: Young's reputation will help. But Hill will be the one more heavily involved in recruiting. I think it always helps to have a guy who has a reputation for winning when it comes to recruiting. Hill won at Carol City, he won at Florida. He's young and hungry. I think both will help Miami in recruiting.

Manny, good job as usual. Can't wait to sit down with a beer in hand for the latest countdown episode.

I think these two coaching hires makes it harder for Harris (CB) to not choose the U. With two very good and experienced coaches, it cuts development down a year minimum and we can contend almost right away.

I honestly think Harris was undecided before the hires. BUT, if we get the two Cali Kids, I think loosing Harris will be a lot less painful.

Come on down Canespace when you can. The last time you went there at past midnight it brought the house down. Rumor has it even a coach of the local team even came by to visit. LOL

Interesting to note that BB team was still ranked 24th before this game. Man, Haith is doing what Schnellenberger did for Miami Football...

Miami doesn't know what to do with the ball. They can't keep their composure.

A: I think the main reason this team is looking so bad right now is because this is the ACC and no longer the cupcakes it appears Miami had success against. This team doesn't have a true point guard. And their shooters right now can't hit the wide side of a barn. I've counted two made jump shots in this game on about 12 attempts. The consistency just isn't there. On the other hand, this team still started the season 14-2. They can be good. I think right now they're having trouble adjusting. I picked them to finish seventh at the start of the season and at best go 9-7 in the conference. I'm not swaying. Winning on the road in the ACC is not easy.

Manny this looks bad 354-27, 1:18 left is the title now on the blog lol

Haith, make good adjustmen in the second half, and make the players get open so they can shoot better.

Manny,

What is up with Brandon Harris? Is he really going to turn his back on the U? How about Bryant? Hester? What have you been hearing?

CHECK OUT ESPN THEN JACORY ISN'T IN THEIR TOP 20. HE HAS A RAG ARM AND IS TOO SMALL.

Q: Hey Manny any Ideas on the remaining Scholli we have in Basketball? Posted by: Hurricane Moe | January 19, 2008 at 08:36 PM

A: Not sure Moe. Someone sent me an email the other day with a name. But until I do my own reporting, I don't want to come out with anything. I'll ask though.

Q: What are your feelings on the Ramon Buchanon situation, do U think he sticks? Posted by: Brett | January 19, 2008 at 08:36 PM

A: Miami thinks he will. I say its 50-50. He's in Florida country.

Hey Manny,

More recruits questions for you. What is the deal with Jordan Gary-DE, Jericho Nelson-Ath, and Laron Byrd-WR? I just saw we are recruiting them from the SI Web site and they were not there before, any news on them?

How about that? I do believe Jack's back!

Let's go Miami lets take this one.

Manny,

With alot of the top 25 teams loosing today and this week; with a win do you think Miami can move up in the rankings even with our loss earlier this week?

Manny,

When you spoke w/ Andy Katz the other night what did he think about McClinton's pro (NBA hopefully) prospects?

Haith should be fired after that game. I have never seen worse coaching in my life. The entire last minute of the regualtion and the last minute of over time is some of the worst coaching I have seen in years. What a discraceful loss.

Have you noticed that seemingly all UM teams are having trouble winning/closing out games over the past 3 years?

Of course, geez. That last play sums up UM basketball the last 10 years.

what a discrace

Manny,

Did you just puke watching the last 10 minutes as bad as Miami just choked

Great job calling the game Manny! Thank You

my mistake, last 10s

Incredible. These guys are a joke. We lost to a bad NC State team.

Can anything go right for us??? I can't take the losing anymore.

Manny stopped commenting. Can't stick up for his boy Haith tonight. Haith may be able to recruit a few decent players, but his lack of coaching experience is really starting to show. Who the hell is making the decisions during the timeouts? Clock management......horrible, getting the ball into good free throw shotters hands.....horrible....so many bad decisions in this game and it just a trend from the past. We aren't playing cupcakes anymore. It's time to start coaching a little bit.

The most "discraceful" thing I've seen tonight is CanesFan's inability to spell.

relax

its college basketball
it doesnt matter

The UM Basketball coach seems a lot like the Football Coach at the U... Losers...

I AM SO PISSED I spent 2 1/2 hours of my life watching that. They had me fooled this year. Joke's on me...Well, Manny let's talk about Baseball and Jim Morris' club. Can they win the ACC? I refuse to be like others on this site who want to talk about the decisions of a bunch of 17-year-old kids who MIGHT start play, 8 MONTHS from now, for our PATHETIC 5-7 football team.

PS Hicks and King, as Seniors, deserve to miss the NCAA Tourney with those ginormous blunders at the end of regulation and OT. This is a season ruining loss.

For all you real canes fans... I will cheer for any hurricane sport regardless if they win or lose... All you people posting make me sick!!! Saying this and that... u arent real fans... They lost, ohhwell, move on... The basketball team is good and needs some support. I am done reading all of these negative comments... peace

hey robnyce

relax
its college basketball
it doesnt really matter

as for the recruiting
that has a far larger scale of importance
and it is worth investing time to find out the players we will hopefully be supporting in the future.

You're right, football recruiting is very important, especially killing it to death on Manny's Blog in January. Our propspects always turn into recruits, and our recruits always turn into great players. And 'Cane fans always support those players. I can't wait to read more. And college basketball doesn't matter? Why? I don't get it.

Haith needs to give them a Basketball Basics 101 class.

1) We are up by three, we hurry a shot and the defender Hicks get caught staring at the play and does not get back on time. He then fouls the guy, AFTER the guy shoots the layup!! Either hit him hard or let him lay it up.

2) Game tied, one last shot by UM. McClinton throws a hurried shot to quick (1st mistake) We get the rebound (Hicks again) and instead of passing it out and getting a last and better shot. He hurries a shot with 9 seconds left. Luckily they missed!!!

3) In OT, we are up by 2, we are defending after a timeout. We get the rebound and King does not pass the ball fast enough. He shoots fouls and misses one. Three point game. They shoot and tie the score.

4) We have the ball up by two!! We have the freaking last shot and again we hurry the shot and commit a turnover.

5) They come down the court, give it to the post guy and he ALMOST FREAKING DUNKS, he misses (guess who I saw not blocking his guy out Hicks. He had his hand on the NCST players back, he was giving him a massage) The player gets the rebound and ties the game.

6) Since we wasted our Timeouts for who knows what. (Coach ALWAYS KEEP A T/O WHEN THE SCORE IS TIED AT THE END OR 2 OR LESS POINTS, ALWAYS!!!) King ties to inbound in a hurry. THE GAME IS TIED, WE ARE NOT GOING TO LOSE. Why didn't you pass it to the our guy to your right!! He tries to only give it to Jack and we all know the result.

7) Jack was hot. Why in the hell was King shooting 18 foot jumpers and Hurdle running like crazy and shooting jumpshots??!! Give it to the hot hand.

COACHING BASICS 101!!!!!!!!

BTW I am pissed....

"- 1:18 left, NCST 35, UM 27: Wow -- that was funny. The crowd just booed loudly. The reason: Barry Manilow's concert scheduled for Sunday night in Raleigh has been postponed due to inclement weather."

LMFAO! People in Raleigh NC are rednecks, that's all there is to it Manny. Barry Manilow = entertainment to them still. I highly doubt they will ever learn otherwise anytime soon. What is going on with Haith's guys in ACC play, they can't hit a shot in the 1st half anymore and suddenly can't remember how to close out a game? I'm not as pissed about this as PTF is yet, but I'm kind of perplexed. "Deadeye" McClinton needs to step up and demand the ball late in the game if he's going to be "the guy" come March ala Johnny Hemsley. Collins just deciding to go gonzo on fools in the post at some point en route to a massive scoring binge would be nice too. I miss Leonard Hamilton, how can he really be happier up in Tallahicksville instead of the Magic City? It just doesn't make any sense.

(shundel's) blog really consists of 4 guys who spend hours there all day and really carry on an internet chat session. One of them is a Gator. He is a good Gator, but it is still just a chat session with the others. It is not a blog.

In the past, you had some really good people on that blog. It wasn't just 4 guys chatting. Here you get posts by people who care and love the program. There, you get the UF guy trying to spin things a certain way in hopes that recruits will consider UF. Here, we are die hard fans that love UM ... I like what Manny is doing and will support this as the authortative source for UM info.
