Courtside blog: N.C. State 79, UM 77 (F-OT)

RALEIGH -- OK, the game is about to get underway. I'll be here with my thoughts during the game. Feel free to chime in.

FIRST HALF...
- UM coach Frank Haith has gone with a small starting lineup against N.C. State's big team: Guards Lance Hurdle, Jack McClinton, James Dews with forward Ray Hicks and center Anthony King.
- 15:23 left, NCST 8, UM 5: The game started the way UM wanted. Miami took its first four shots from inside the paint, hitting three. King scored twice on post moves to put UM up 5-0. But the Canes have once again turned to taking jump shots and once again has cooled. The Wolfpack have gone on a 8-0 run and Miami is getting in early foul trouble.
- 11:45 left, NCST 16, UM 13: State 11-0 run finally ended when Ray Hicks rebounded and laid in a bad shot by Eddie Rios, who still looks uncomfortable being out there. Moment's later, Hicks dunked over Brandon Costner to make it 11-9. King has since paced Miami with back-to-back buckets. The Hurricanes have scored 12 of their 13 points inside the paint. Foul alert: James Dews and Jimmy King both have two fouls.
- 7:02 left, NCST 31, UM 19: State went on another run, this time 9-1, before Lance Hurdle's three-point play with 9:11 remaining. State has connected on four big three-pointers early in the first half and its helped open up the floor inside. For all the talk about Miami's poor shooting, the Hurricanes finally hit their first jumper with 8:23 remaining, an 18-footer by James Dews from the wing.
- 3:51 left, NCST 34, UM 23: It seems everytime Miami starts to claw back into the game, the Wolfpack hit a big three. This time after a 4-0 run, Courtney Fells hits a three with 4:20 left to extend the N.C. State lead back to 11.
- 1:18 left, NCST 35, UM 27: Wow -- that was funny. The crowd just booed loudly. The reason: Barry Manilow's concert scheduled for Sunday night in Raleigh has been postponed due to inclement weather.
- HALF, NCST 36, UM 27: The Wolfpack have connected on 5 of 9 from three-point range and are shooting 52.2 percent from the field. UM is 11 of 31 from the field and is 0-for-5 from three-point range. The Hurricanes have outrebounded State, 19-16, outscored them in the paint 14-8 and outscored State in second-chance points 6-0. Translation: Miami isn't doing so bad. They just can't hit baskets.

SECOND HALF...
- 15:52 left, NCST 43, UM 35:
Miami started the half strong -- especially Hicks who has been playing out of his mind tonight. But once again turnovers and some poor outshooting is killing UM. Jack McClinton is now 2-of-9 from the field and 0-for-5 from three-point range. Hicks has six points in the second half and a team-leading 13 in the game.
- 13:12 left, NCST 46, UM 45: Miami has gone on an 8-0 run to climb right back into the game. The Hurricanes have taken turns scoring in the pos. Haith has talked for a long time about Miami becoming a post team. They look like one now.
- 10:40 left, NCST 52, UM 51: Welcome back, Jack. McClinton's back-to-back three-pointers finally gave Miami its first lead with 11:31 remaining since UM scored the first five points of the game. An interesting development a few minutes ago when Dwayne Collins picked up his second foul. Collins took a shoulder to the chest afterward from Gavin Grant. Officials didn't see it. Miami's big men are picking up a ton of fouls. That could be the story late in this game.
- 7:21 left, UM 55, NCST 54: Jimmy Graham's offensive rebound and stick-back has given UM the lead again. McClinton is starting to heat up for the Canes, who have outplayed N.C. State's big men in the second half.
- 5:11 left, UM 61, NCST 58: Lance Hurdle has fouled out. The Hurricanes had a five-point lead with 5:45 remaining.
- 3:30 left, UM 65, NCST 64: How about a shout out to former Miami Dr. Krop standout Javi Gonzalez. The freshman's three-pointer with 4:48 to play tied the score at 61. UM has now retaken the lead at 65-64 on another Jack McClinton jumper.
- 2:26 left, UM 68, NCST 66: If you don't like Jack McClinton's game, then something is wrong with you. This guy has icewater in his veins. Another big shot -- a three-pointer with 2:50 left -- to give UM the lead again.
- 1:25 left, UM 72, UM 69: How many big shots can McClinton hit? Another three to give UM the lead again. Then, Graham draws a charge on Ben McCauley before hitting one of two free throws to give UM a three-point lead.
- 17.7 left, UM 72, NCST 72: High drama in Raleigh. Canes have the ball and are now tied after Hicks made a foolish mistake fouling Gavin Grant on his way to the basket. Grant hit the free throw and the game is tied.
- End of regulation, UM 72, NC ST 72: Can't explain what happened there in the final 45 seconds except to think the Canes blew their opportunity. McClinton put up a bad three-point shot. King got the rebound then forced a bad shot. N.C. State had a chance to win, but Courtney Fells' three-pointer rattled out right before time expired. Let's see how UM handles overtime.

Da U has 5 NC and doesnt have 45,000 plus fans in their stands on average (i dont think)...UF has 2 NC and plays in front of 90,000 plus (at least 50,000 during 2nd & 3rd tier opponents)...FSU has 2 NC and plays in front of 80,000 plus (at least 50,000 during 2nd & 3rd tier opponents)...

I'll take da U over atmosphere...yah can go to UF and FSU.

I think ppl want a NC every year. USC was down for some years, Ohio St. was down for some years, Michigan has been down, UF was down for some years. Get over it, da U will be back. THATS A PROMISE!!!

Manny great podcast...appreciate the committment you have to the blog and the U

I've read several times that Streeter is a quite, understated kid. Maybe its better he doesn't come to the U. If thats true, he's not the type of kid that would do well here.

We're not slipping in recruiting, if these kids don't believe the U is for them, we are better off.

Don't buy into the star rating system, lots of those kids flop. See Kyle Wright, Kirby Freeman, Ryan Moore, Xavier Lee, Taurean Charles...the list goes on and on.

Look at the 3 star and below recruits that do make it big....Ed Reed, can't think of anyone else because its late and my Giants are going to the ship! Someone fill in here if you agree.

put a sock in it canes junkie

WE WANT ANTHONY GRANT!!!!!

We want Anthony Grant. He's a local and a hell of a coach. We need him ASAP. Hopefully the new AD cares about basketball and starts by changing the coach.

Buchanan was probably going to be a safety. We are very deep at safety. Don't want to lose players, especially to the gutters, but at this position it won't hurt us so much. Hey maybe Buchanan knows of a couple more recruits coming in and like Lerantee (scared of competition) McCray (who said"they just kept recruiting linebackers") wants to go somewhere where he is promised playing time. Dont lose sleep over those that dont want to be here.

P.S. We really need Brandon Harris, we dont have too many cornerbacks.

Dont be a fool and think that atmosphere has nothing to do with it.

tennessee LB Gavin Hardin: "Friday I got there, we went over some academic stuff, they showed us the campus. It's not big, but it's beautiful. They said we won't get lost going to school. Then we went out to eat. Saturday we went to see Dolphin Stadium. That stadium is amazing. They have like 700 plasma screens in there. We went to South Beach, Coconut Grove, downtown. There's a lot at Miami."

manny what you need to do is to start updating things, the last week you been a slacker on the recruiting process.. buchanon decomitted, and i want to know what good of a chance we have now since gavin i think is a most in our linebacker corps. what is the story on Luiget and what about those cali studs and when will they problaly make there announcement.. sorry if in been a little rough around the edges is just that ramon buchanon saga pisses me off when we lose a stud like that to the hands of gator nation. i tell you something we these kids now-a-days there is no binding trust nor an agreement. kids should act like a fortson, brown and regis.

that ramon buchanon saga pisses me off when we lose a stud like that to the hands of gator nation.

U can't lose something U never had ...
SLEIGHT OF HAND

gator nation = euphemism for dullsville

there will not be a greater joy than for tha U to beat Gayturds....

Is Manny on Vacation or something? Jesus Christ that dude is a lazy ass! Anyways, here's the story on Ramon!

Jan. 21
Ramon Buchanan, OLB
Melbourne, FL
Palm Bay High School

Scouts Grade: 82
ESPN150 Rank: 53
Position Rank: 3 Gators loot Miami's class again, this time Buchanan
Under Armour All-American outside linebacker Ramon "Cookie" Buchanan has decommitted from Miami-FL for Florida, ESPN affiliate GatorCountry.com reports.
He said, "It was really my mom that played a big role. She really loves the Gators." Buchanan added, "Coach [Charlie] Strong and coach [Urban] Meyer have been recruiting me most. They're both really cool, but coach Strong and I are real close. He played a big part in my choice."

It was really my mom that played a big role. She really loves the Gators
-- ramon buchanan

Im sorry, I was once a recruit 7 years ago although it was only for D3 football but the coaches still sell the same sh@t. MY MOM HAD NO INFLUENCE ON MY DECISSION. Because it is not a womans sport. UF has done a good job of telling these kids what they want to hear and alot of them are falling for it. Watch for the trend to continue of UF players not making it to their junior year. These kids will drop like flies when they spend a year at school and realize the lies they have been sold and that coach isnt as friendly as he was during the recruiting process.

you will never hear about the pre$$ure brought to bear on this kid & his family ... COERCION

18-0 trumps 17-0

not without a superbowl it does not

Green? Are u agreeing with what I said or disagreeing?

anyone what the update with Jeremy Lewis will he decommitted too from miami?? i hope not because we cannot afford lose more guys. We need brandon harris and Alonzo Lawrence

elaborating : )

Manny sucks!!!!

I guess we should all go to the gators blogs to find out what is going on with the u!!!!

Manny sucks

Having to type in a security code to post sucks

Ask Manny a ? during live Q&A and it will not get answered. ( unless you kiss his a$$ and tell him how good a job he is doing).

Come to think of it when has Manny had any "breakin news"?

Does anybody know how to get information from when Miami recruited from 1998 1999 2000, and 2001.

These recruiting website only go as far back as 2002.

Then when the websites rate Hester and Reggie Bush 4 stars they go back and add a star. Just recruit football players. 5 stars or 1 star as long as they produce who cares!

This is BS! Manny has never had breaking news! He waits til someone else breaks a story then comes on this blog and words his stories like he's the first to break it. I guess he thinks this is the only website we visit.
He's always givin us this "My sources tell me" bs. Don't you guys remember just last week when he told all of us during the "Q&A"(no longer live by the way) that "His sources tell him that UM is going to wait until after signing day to hire a DC." He acted like the question was obsurd even to be asked! Then a couple days later, if not the very next day, he comes on this blog talking about a home-run hire, and he never even mentions that his sources were wrong! What about the fired WR coach? He never answered any questions about it, but when he did, he said that no one from the u was talking about it. Then when ESPN and Rivals broke the story, Manny comes on here talking this "most of us close to the program already had knowledge of this but wanted to wait til comformation" ?!?
It's become obvious that Manito thinks of all of us like we are retards and degenerates because we don't have the same job he does.

PREACH ON!!!!!!
Me, Green, and 86Cane are on the Gators blog, at least we get Cane updates there!!! I wonder if Randy Shannon can recruit the Gators beat writer. That dude never stops!

It is sickening to hear in every blog and every radio show that Coach Haith keeps saying the freshmen Eddie Rios is not ready. I have watched every game like the fan that I am and how can a freshmen be ready when only given 1-6 minutes a game? For what I see he makes 1 mistake and is pulled out of the game for the rest of the game. No questions asked! How can this kid prove what he can do? Coach says he likes Hurdle because he is fast and athletic yet Rios is out rebounding Hurdle and has more assist with less minutes. being fast and athletic isnt going to cut it. To run a team you need to know how to play the game not run up and down like a maniac. Rios is the only true guard the Canes have and is the only player that can run this team if is given the opportunity. He has proven it when he's been allowed to play. This coach wants to force Lance Hurdle who is doing a terrible job at it. Fast and athletic is for track . Coach, cut the crap, leave your favoritism and play the freshmen!

Is that Eddie Rios?

I agree, We need the true point guard. We need the best player out there who can run this team of shooters. It doensnt matter wether its a freshmen, the best player needs to be on the job. leave the run and jump athletes for fast breaks and rebounds.

I highly doubt marcus robinson decommits. Micheal Barrow was his highschool football coach last year. Alonzo Lawrence is a big target now. Brandon Harris needs to be a cane and i believe he will be the same goes for benjamin jones. With Cj Holton committing it lessons the sting but Buchannon is an absolute stud.

Whats the word on Vaugn Telemaque

i am hearing that Telemaque love his visit at miami. he will discuss his visit with his parent. i believe distance is a big factor here.

Got a question... We have 34-36 scholarships for this year's incoming class. So far we have 26 commits. Anyone have a list of the most likely 8-10 who will commit on Signing Day? Everyone knows the Ben Jones', Brandon Harris's who we're going after. But even if we were to get all of them, we'd still have 2-4 scholarships left over. Who are the sleepers?

manny,

you are really falling behind the 8 ball right now.

is the UF blog on the heraldwebsite?

Why the hell is everyone so concerned with jaime ahrper. next year there is lamar miller, who said he wants to come to miami, bryce brown, arthurs younger bro, and 2 years away is jakahri gore, franks cousin

UM's POINT GUARDS: WHO'S BETTER AT IT? THE JR OR THE FRESH? HURDLE HAS PLAYED ALMOST 3 FULL GAMES AND RIOS HAS PLAYED HALF A GAME.

LAST 5 GAMES

HURDLE: MINUTES:111 ASSIST:9 REBS:7 3POINTS MADE:1 3POINTS ATTEMPED:11 FIELD GOALS MADE:7 FIELD GOALS ATTEMPTED:33 = 22%

RIOS: MINUTES:31 ASSIST:6 REBOUNDS:2 3POINTS MADE:3 3POINTS ATTEMPTED:5 FIELD GOALS MADE:3 FIELD GOALS ATTEMPTED:10 = 30%
