Courtside blog: UM 88, Penn 62 (F)

Happy New Year. It's Wednesday night. It's cold. And I'm indoors here at BankUnited Center to watch the Hurricanes take on Penn. I'll take you through the game. Feel free to drop your thoughts.

FIRST HALF...
- Penn is 4-8. The Quakers tied a dubious NCAA record with six points in the first half in a 60-30 loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Which basically means UM better not struggle in this game.
- The first interesting development of this game, Dwayne Collins starts in place of Jimmy Graham. Not sure why. But I'm sure coach Frank Haith will tell us later.
- Wow. A shakey first half for the Canes. Penn has stayed within single digits for most of the game.
- With 31 seconds left, Haith called Dwayne Collins over and gave him a mouthful for playing soft defense.
- The Quakers have played three-ranked teams this season -- losing to No. 1 North Carolina 106-71, then No. 23 Virginia 100-85 and then No. 21 Villanova 87-61. So, if you wants a barometer as to how much the Canes should be looking to win by -- there you go.

SECOND HALF...
- UM has come out on fire out of the gate. Collins scores the first seven points of the half as the Canes have now put a 21-point gap between them and the Quakers two minutes in.
- The Canes are opening it up now -- athleticism is taking over. Canes are now up 64-38 with 11:48 to go. Collins has 16 points. Asbury has 15 points.
- This one is basically over. Good signs -- Eddie Rios has shaken off a rough start to his freshman year with some good second half minutes. He's got 9 points -- all on three-pointers.

Happy New Year Manny

Knew you wouldn't let us down

What's the going on with Matt Patchan? Is he going to commit somewhere soon? Do you think it's going to be Miami?

Who should we expect to be our next commit? Do you think we get Patchan, Harris, TJ Bryant, Luiget and/or Streeter. Good work by the way. Go Beach High!

Whats up Manny? Scouts is reporting Marcus Robinson is headed to the U. I know he was a soft verbal, but do you have any updates on him? Also it still shows a number of trips he has set up.

Happy New Year!

Any signs of progress on finding a new DC for the canes?

Also, do you figure Forstons persistant recruiting will actually sway some kids to the U?

If so, do you know what kid(s)?

What does the crowd look like Manny ??

A: Patchan is supposed to announce Saturday from what I've heard and from UM coaches expect. He was supposed to be in San Antonio but is sick and at home in Tampa. I was of the opinion early on Patchan was a Miami lock. But the longer it has taken, the more I expect him to be a Gator. From what I've heard from my sources, his father is the one pushing the Gators. The rest of his family wants him to go to Miami. We'll see Saturday who wins out.

You guys doing another audio show on Countdown? Last one was real good.

Happy New Year BTW...

Q: What does the crowd look like Manny ?? Posted by: Hurricane Moe | January 02, 2008 at 08:25 PM

A: Around 2,000. Same as usual for non-confence opponents.

Haith said Graham was getting into foul trouble early. He was having to sit for too long a stretch... So Haith wanted him to come off the bench and hopefully not get into foul trouble

A: What's up Hi-Tide. If it is going to be any one of those it's going to be Patchan. The other guys are expected not to decide any time soon.

A: Robinson is a kid I never thought would defect. He just wants attention. The problem is I'm not sure he still has the test score/grades to get into UM. That to me is the bigger issue with Robinson. He was coached by Michael Barrow last season at Homestead High. The only way he heads somewhere else is if somebody did something illegal to convince him otherwise.

A: I don't expect anything on the defensive coordinator until after the College Football Coaches meetings in Texas. As far as Forston goes. I think he could persuade some kids to consider Miami more. But to flat out win a recruit over... doubtful. The best chance he and his teammates have of working over to The U are guys like Brandon Harris and Tommy Streeter, who know them personally and respect them.

How solid is Ramon Buchanon's commit? I see him playing safety in college. Also Is Allen Bailey really the beast I have heard some people say he is?

Q: You guys doing another audio show on Countdown? Last one was real good. Happy New Year BTW... Posted by: rubcatcane | January 02, 2008 at 08:31 PM

A: I will. But not until next week. Thanks by the way. You are the first person to give me some actual feedback.

Hey manny

don't u think UM fans are putting way too much hope/pressure on this recruiting class?

A: Buchanon has never really said he's willing to anywhere else but UM. But on the inside, Canes coaches are somewhat worried because he does go to high school in an area in Melbourne that is very Gator friendly. And yes he'll play safety.

As for Bailey, physically he's a beast. But I can't give an honest assesment of his play because I haven't really seen him on the field yet.

Manny, give it up. What was shakey? Are they settling for outside shots? One pass and done? Turnovers? Out-hussled? Lazy defense? Tell us what's going on.

Are you surprised that Kirby tranferred especially when he said he was a Miami guy thru and thru? I know you said Miami will not have an experienced signal caller w/ leadership next year which could hurt but do you really think that Marve, Harris, etc. would really benefit from a guy whose overall career has been a disappointment? Thanks Manny and great job on the blog!

Manny,

I was at a couple of the cakewalk games a couple weeks ago against the North Floridas of the world, and I was looking for you. Do you sit at the back left corner of that little media section of the bleachers? I wanted to give a shout out but I wasn't sure if that was you or not.

The girlfriend's making me take her to a movie otherwise I'd be with y'all at the ol' Bank United Center. I'm lovin' the info, man. Thanks for the work. True Cane fans appreciate it.

Q: Hey manny. don't u think UM fans are putting way too much hope/pressure on this recruiting class? Posted by: Manny Is God | January 02, 2008 at 08:51 PM

A: This class has no choice but to have pressure applied on it. If they don't come through, how bad is UM football going to be in the next five years? These kids have got to be good.

Have you heard of anyone to watch for in the 09' recruiting class other than Arthur Brown's brother? I know there is a 5 star reciever that has us listed as one of his 3. I know it's WAY too early to ask this but I was just curious.

A: Defense was not good. Quakers were getting wide open looks and hit on a few backdoor plays. UM was also taking and missing some bad shots early on.

A: Matt it never hurts to have someone available who has done the job before -- good or bad. You never know what can happen in a game. What if Jacory Harris isn't ready and needs a redshirt? Then you have a young guy like Marve in there. What if he struggles and loses his confidence. Freeman was simply an insurance package. I see your point, but it's still good to have insurance. As far as Kirby leaving? No I'm not surprised. I was surprised when he said he was coming back. I figured he'd go home to Texas.

A: Chubby Hispanic dude with the beard. Yes that's me. I do sit in the back left corner of the media section. Feel free to stop by next time.

Any kids flying under the radar that might commit to the U. Also with the ACC schedule coming up do you see the Canes making the NCAA big dance at the end of the year? I have followed ACC basketball for the last 25 yrs. and there are NO nights off in the ACC.

A: There are a lot of kids locally. Killian RB Lamar Miller has to be at the top of the list. Krop's Brandon Taylor (son of Lawrence Taylor). We'll have plenty after this signing day. The class I really like, though, locally, is the 2010 class. Frank Gore's cousin is a stud running back at Columbus High. Booker T. Washington running back Eduardo Clements is very good. Northwestern has some very good young players too.

Thanks Manny wasn't sure if you'd answer that one.

A: No names really flying under the radar anymore to be honest. Can the Canes make the big dance? Yes. But it won't be easy. Every game in the ACC is going to be a dogfight for this team. But they can win eight games and win one in the ACC tournament and get in. I just expect a lot of games to be close.

Q: Thanks Manny wasn't sure if you'd answer that one. Posted by: Da U | January 02, 2008 at 09:33 PM
A: I try to answer them all. Just tough to get to all of them. I could just breeze by them. But then I wouldn't give them any real thought. I try to provide good answers.

Manny, do you think any coaching moves lately have effected the Canes DC search?

I just don't think Miami has the depth to win 8 more games. 2 loses to Duke,NC,FSU,BC,Clemson,Maryland,VA Tech. Split with GT,Virginia, NC state, and Wake. They will have to win the play in game IMO.

Has there been any word on how Brandon Harris has reacted to the decommitment of Johnson. With Van Dyke seeming to be a starter for the next few years and Johnson seemingly going for the class, I can see why he would shy away, but with the second spot seemingly open for grabs, does it seem like Harris is more likely to commit? Also, any word on Nick Perry from Michigan?

What have you heard about brandon tompson. is there any chance we get him? is ramon bucannon going to be moved to saftey? thanks

Manny, Don't sleep bro, I gave you props on The Countdown in another blog. We love and respect everything you do. You are Dat Dude!

Is everyone in bed already? Does any one have any thing new?

On the West Coast here in Washington State and I'm up and watching WVa fly all over OU. How did they lose to Wanstache? Feel bad a friend of mine has like $700 or something like that on 2 different parlays involving this game, yikes!
Thanks for all of the info Manny and keep up the good work.

==============================================
Hey guys - does anybody have a link to the Miami Herald article that reported that the last schedule spot for next year would be filled by Charleston Southern?

Thanks in advance...

It's great to be a Miami Hurricane!

Happy New Year Manny. Now for all U fans wishing for Streeter it's not going to happen. My uncle works with his dad and there is some bad blood between him and the U.So don't waste your time thinking about Streeter he's not coming to the U.

Manny, loved the last podcast with Larry and Charlie. I keep checking for a new one. Don't keep us hanging. Please continue the great work keeping us Canes informed and up to date. A very happy and healthy new year to you and your family and all my Canes family in the blogging community.

Hey Manny
Who is the leading candidate for the DC position? Do you think not having a DC would effect our recruiting class?

Hey Manny, the podcast was hot, some good work on it.

Manny,
Why is it constantly reported that miami wouldn't spend big money for a DC? Miami should have lots of cash, so why not go after a big name?

I'll be at the announcement here in New Tampa tomorrow. It's at 1 PM. I'm getting there early and sporting all my Canes gear. I'm gonna hang around even if he goes with UF. He's been good about handling everything (unlike some) and deserves some respect. I want to hear his reasons regardless of his pick.

Where does Miami have lots of cash? They are still paying Perry Clark and Larry Coker.

Isn't it amazing how we still got to be paying these overrated coaches that are always saying how much they love the U. If they love the U so much, why don't they cancel them paychecks so we can stop struggling on hiring some good coaches like all the other universities. (PUNKS)

Manny,
I really enjoyed your Podcast. I can't wait to hear some recruits on there -- I love reading their comments, it'd be that much better to hear them! Any idea who you'll get and when you'll get them? Keep up the good work.

Manny always liked the audio u have especially with players and recruits those are the best ones I liked a lot.

Manny, first of all thanks for keeping us Canes fans in Texas updated on the U! I don't know if you ever get tired of hearing this, but---- THANK YOU! Will you be in San Antonio this weekend at the Army All American game?
