Patchan picks... the Gators! (update)

In just a few moments -- around 1:30 p.m. -- the son of former Hurricane offensive lineman Matt Patchan will decide where he will attend college during a press conference in Tampa.

Matt_patchan_2I'm not there, but I'll be here providing a live update when the 6-7, 270-pound blue-chip lineman from Seffner Armwood announces his decision. So how am I going to find out? One of our regular bloggers, Brandon Brinkley, a grad student living in Tampa and die-hard Hurricanes fan will be there to provide the news! Cool. Now, you guys are becoming part of the process. Love it.

Stay tuned for the details shortly. Brandon tells me a few TV trucks have pulled up to Tampa Palms Country Club, where Patchan will announce his decision in front of friends and family. He'll let me know if anything else interesting develops.

Brandon Brinkley updates...
12:58 p.m. - "In my opinion I think he's going to be a Cane. There are about 20 people here in the  room, a few TV stations and reporters. His high school coaches are here and some of his family have arrived wearing UM gear. Balloons are setup in neutral orange and white colors."

1:10 p.m. - "I was talking with Anthony Reddick's brother and Eric Smith from Armwood and all the family. Matt is a lot smaller than what I thought he was. He's skinny. His uncle was saying Matt has been staying with him for the week in Key West and he doesn't even know where he's going. There are a lot of people here now, about 30-40. 1:30 is when it's supposed to happen. Matt is there in a white button shirt, jeans. He looks tall and skinny. I don't know if its from the mono he had. But he doesn't look as big as he does in pictures. His uncle just kept saying to cross our fingers. He came in and shook the hands of all Canes fans. So that's a good sign."

1:20 p.m. - "More of his Armwood teammates have arrived. Everyone is being tight-lipped about it. So, nobody knows where he is leaning."

1:26 p.m. - "I just talked to another guy who is a family friend. Matt's mom and dad have walked out. They say they don't even know."

1:28 p.m. - "I've heard from family that Matt is in the back on the phone informing UF and UM coaches where he is going. When he comes out, he'll be wearing a shirt of where he's going."

1:31 p.m. - "He's set to make the announcement in moments. As soon as he does, I'll call with the update."

1:38 p.m. - "He's a Gator. He made a couple jokes and said he was going to flip a coin. Ultimately, he said the best decision for him and his goals was to go to Florida."

1:43 p.m. - "Matt said ultimately what swung his decision was the relationship he built with the Florida staff, the strength coach, the position coaches. He said he wants to be around the best talent and he believes it is at Florida. It's funny, as soon as he announced his decision, all the Canes fans left. Now, I'm leaving too."

------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE... At 2:30 p.m., I caught up with Matt Patchan Sr. to get his thoughts on his son's announcement. Here is what he said...

Q: Was this Matt’s decision on his own or did you help him reach this decision?
A: I was instrumental in helping him gather information and tried to sort through what was best for him. In the end, the decision was entirely his.

Q: Did you know this morning? Did you have an inkling? When did you figure out where Matt was going?
A: When he announced it to everybody else. He actually didn’t know until about 45 minutes before. Then, before he went over and announced it he came over and whispered it in our ears and we hugged him and told him we supported him and that type of thing. We didn’t know. I don’t know how this works for other people. I don’t know the circumstances could ever be duplicated with the decision he had. Trust me, we’re not complaing. We’re thrilled our son is fortunate enough to be in this position. I don’t know if there’s ever been a recruit as torn between the two schools in making this decision. When I tell you this decision was razor-thin, it was razor-thin.

Q: Why do you think he ultimately picked Florida in your opinion?
A: I just think he thinks deep down inside in his heart this is a better choice for his decision at this time and his future.

Q: I know as a former Hurricane you probably had the Hurricanes deep in your heart and this must have been tough for you, but where did you feel Matt was best served going?
A: I think many people looking at what’s going on in college football now would clearly have to admit that Florida is further along in terms of where they are in competing for conference titles or national championships. I know that was a big factor for Matt. Other than that, I thought everything else was a push as far as the coaches and the players Miami is bringing in and the players Florida has currently. Maybe where things with his quality of life would be pretty similar. I think his decision he just processed everything and he’s going where he decided.

Q: I know as a former Hurricane you’re probably going to get some teasing from your teammates since he went to the Gators, you expecting that?
A: Oh yeah. There were some former Canes here and they’re giving it to me. Everybody knows or they should know that your allegiance is to your son’s future first and its your duty as a dad to help him through the process and do what’s best for him. There will never be a time when I will ever divorce myself from the tradition and the memories I have as a Hurricane. I’ll embrace them forever. I got so much out of them. They’re deep in my heart. They’re indelible and they’ll never go away and I love them. I would have loved to see Matthew go there too. But it’s just one of those things at this time, it just wasn’t so at this time.

Matt saw the train wreck UM has become

Posted by: DocCane | January 05, 2008 at 01:56 PM
oncoming train ... HOP ABOARD

meyer was wearing his pheromones

Miami became a train wreck over the last 4 years and as our ranking in the signing class will show you, the train wreck you keep talking about is now back on track and about to flatten the entire NCAA!!! AND YOU'RE SCARED :)

This kid made his choice and hope it works out for him. At least he didn't do it the way PJ did it. The Gaytors got a good one. Now let's get big BEN and bring back the U.

Gators have not beat Miami since 1983. Why would you talk sh@t to a UM fan. This isnt your little Georgia rivalry that you dominate. Until you beat us shut the F@CK up. Quarter of a century without beating the U.

MIAMI FRANS SHOULD NOT BE TALKING SHIT TO ANYONE THIS YR
UR PATHETIC TEAM COULDN'T EVEN MAKE IT TO A BOWL GAME OUT OF THE PITIFUL ACC
AND HOW MUCH WORSE DOES UR TEAM LOOK WHEN U CAN'T WIN ENOUGH GAMES TO GET TO A BOWL WHEN U CLAIM THE NCAA SUCKS THIS YR
SO STFU COME BACK TALKING TO ME WHEN U MAKE IT TO A BOWL GAME

I can't stand the Gayturds. Wouldn't come within 4 light years of Canesville, but Matt made a decision based on the outlook for both squads. Obviously, UiF's looks brighter at the moment and Matt didn't like the OL coach for UM as much as UiF.

Not knee jerk, we don't have a top ranked OL set of commits right now and that sucks. WE don't have Bryant Mac to get excited about. I could care less about Me J, since its obvious his family wants a Bush-League contract. That's why Randy appropriately stopped calling. I would have too. But losing a really good OL kid really hurts.

I hope he has a horrible career at UF!! What a loser.

MIAMI FRANS

who's retarded? MENTAL MIDGET

that figures...kid followed his head and not his heart...too bad, i think he would have had an immediate impact and gave the offensive line some talented depth next year...gotta solidify washington from northwestern and ben jones, who are more athletic than patchan anyway. The UM coaches, as good as this class is, cant afford to keep losing these key recruiting battles to UF and FSU (major wright, maybe PJ, patchan, preston parker, damon mcdaniel, deonte thompson) just the last couple of years. dont care about losing people to sec or national powers, but cant keep losing recruits to the criminoles and crocodiles. go canes

Mp is a joke. He talks a big game callin what he said were his future teamates out and saying how he was going to be part of the solution. He is clearly a quiter who cannot stand by his word. His family should be ashamed as he has no footBALLS. I hope we blitz his side when we play him on the first play.

Word is PJ selected the U after all...

Obviously, UiF's looks brighter at the moment

past performance unreliable indicator of future performance ...
GUESS

Florida is so amazing, ay? They got their asses handed to them against Michigan. I was at the game. Florida was lucky to have the score be as close as it was. Yes, UM sucked this year. Doesn't mean people can't be disappointed a top recruit isn't going to the U. Go back to your university and talk up UF. Your team isn't winning sh#t for years to come. Lil' Bitc#es.

CHERRY PICKING

Hey, lets be adults about this kid's decision. He picked the Gators, that's something he has to live with for the next four years. It's time for the Canes' recruiters to move on and locate other offensive line talent. If his father swayed his decision or not, it was still up to the kid in the long run. I hope the remaining players for Miami remember what this kid said about them, while on the sidelines. Open up a can of whoopazz while playing in Canesville.

MATT PATCHAN is scared of these BROTHA'S down here!!!

POINT BLANK!!!!

I DON'T BLAME HIM FOR CHOOSING FLORIDA. MIAMI SUCKS AND THEIR COACHING STAFF IS AWFUL. SHANNON IS LOSING THE BIG TIME FLORIDA KIDS THAT COULD TURN IT AROUND. THEY GOT ONE ,FORTSON AND NOBODY ELSE. THESE KIDS AND THEIR COACHES ARE SMART NOT TO SEND THEM TO MIAMI UNTIL THEY GET REAL COACHES. THE OFFENSE IS PATHETIC AND THE D ISN'T MUCH BETTER. KIDS CAN TELL REAL COACHES WHEN THEY SEE THEM AND UNFORTUNATELY FLORIDA AND LSU HAVE THEM.

He picked the Gators, that's something he has to live with for the next four years.

IGNORAMUS

enjoy hogtown, mr. patchan ; )
SMALL. RURAL. WHITE.

Any updates on any surprises at these high school all-star games and who is going where? Did PJ announce? Any new on the Miami Northwestern studs? Go Canes! I'm excited about the future. For those of you who are criticizing Patchen for picking the Gayturds, cut him some slack. He's a 18 year old kid.

Good luck to Patchan.
Its the under the radar guys that'll make our team. We need the two and three stars with the hunger to prove the scouts wrong, along with the five star all-americans WHO WANT TO BE HERE! If you dont want to be here, if your not 100% sure, then I dont want you here either, and I'm sure Shannon and the rest of you feel the same way. Anybody we need to do a lot of work to convince, that weakness will out itself during a game, practice, meeting or class. Building a team with true Canes who want to be here.
Good luck to PJ, Patchan, McCray...etc...
Thanks Manny for all the insight.

Why are some of u all griping about our O-line situation. Our O-line was not a problem this past year and was one of our strengths. We need help on defense, WR and QB and we're getting all three. We also recruited Joel Figueroa, Jason Fox, Orlando Franklin, Ian Symonette, Harland Gunn, & Tyler Horn within the past 2 years which means they have at least 3-4 years remaining and all of them are going to be at the least good solid O-linemen. And then we have Brandon Washington and possibly Benjamin Jones this year. We are fine as O-line is concerned in my opinion. Coach Shannon knows what he's doing. I think he will concentrate more on O-line next year. We have Washington and if we get one more (Jones) we will be fine for this recruiting class.

Many of u didnt see Patchan get his a** whooped by that DE from Booker T but I did. Patchan may become a good one...but I'm not going to lose any sleep over his decision.

If we get Harris, Jones, Liuget and one or 2 of those DB's from Cali...I'm happy. This is a great class regardless and in the end will be a top 5 class...top 10 at the least...

SO QUIT UR CRYING ABOUT LOSING PATCHEN SOFT A**...WE NEED REAL CANES HERE AND HE OBVIOUSLY AINT ONE OF EM.

Well, for one thing, I expected PJ to make the choice that he made because of the type of person he is. I don't like to judge, but PJ is clearly all about himself and I can't say I'm disappointed about his choice because I can garantee you that he likely would be a major distraction in the locker room for the team he chooses. As for MP, lets look at this a little deeper. You really have to take your hat off to Randy Shannon considering the type of down season we just had. Miami to a lot of High School kids would look highly unattractive and RS made Miami look attractive enough to get a top five ranking on this haul. But my point is, most of these high school kids are like most sports fans(Band Wagon Jumpers). So when you have a program like Florida(who by the way is over-rated) who just won a national title last year and got a hiesman winner this year, those types of things make the difference sometimes during the recruiting trail. So when it came down to MPs decision, he obviously jumped on that Big Ol Bandwagon trying to play it safe. But what he doesn't know is when Tebow leaves and Percy Harvin leaves, Florida will spiral down because those types of players don't come around that often. As a matter of fact, if it wasn't for Tebow, I say Florida would've lost 5+ games because the type of offense that Meyer runs will never succeed again in the SEC. So I dare say that MP will regret his decision because Florida will soon regress under Meyer

Hell its a top 5 right now w/o Harris, Jones, Liuget and those DB's from Cali...

Patchan did everything right...took time and made his decision. Can't hold it against him. I suppose you do have to have faith in a program that hasn't won under th current staff. We could show some class and wish him well.... But nah....Front runner...you'll fit right in at UF.

good luck mr. patchan. i agree with dz8. while we should be concerned about the lack of o-linemen in this year's recruiting class-- one player doesn't a team make-- no matter if they have enough stars next to their name to fill a galaxy.

only those wh want to be here. i appreciate the fact that shannon et. al, don't treat these kids like primadonnas. its not all about them as individuals-- its about the teams they are agreeing to be a part of.

so be it if these players make the decision to join a program based on what's going on now. joining the ranks of the canes for these players is as much about is as much about what they bring to the program vs. what they get out of it to advance their onw careers.

we have to prove that we're on our way back-- on the field.

We will do good regardless who get or don't get, it's a 'Cane thing.

PJ to LSU...hilarious!

PJ picks LSU

no shock...pj to lsu...ncaa if you are out there investigate this one...they also lose their defensive coordinator just like UM>>I REALLY HOPE THIS GUY GETS BURNED BY ALL OF THE SEC NEXT YEAR. phelon jones last year, ali highsmith, dwayne bowe...what the hell is lsu doing in recruiting to consistently beat out Miami for top class recruits?

Shannon is loosing the recruiting battle!
Bad timing to fire your DC...Stupid!

Well, there you have it, it's said and done, so now we can move on. But PJ, you have to learn to be a man of your word and stop expecting people to lick out of your a$$. You have to learn to be about the team player and it's clear that you are young and you will be a major distraction to that LSU team if you don't change.

Well, you can't think for one second that Tim Waltons firing made the difference in this recruiting battle for PJ. Walton was our DC for only one year and he did a very poor job. The thing is, PJ went where he was getting the most attention, and he will feel very stupid when goes to college and gets thrown in the back seat just like every freshman does. So obviously, when he doesn't get the attention he wants, he cracks.

Keep the Faith! The "U" will be back next year! The recruits coming in have good attitudes! Miami still may land a surprise offensive lineman on signing day! It happens every year! Relax! Think about how much needed help we are getting at quarterback and wide receiver! Not to mention special teams! both Marve and Harris will straighten out the quarterback situation. The defense will come around next year! Colin McCarthy will become a dominant linebacker next year! Miami can easily compete to win the ACC next year!

I don't disagree with the firing of the DC. The defense was pretty bad last year. If PJ was going to come to the U, he would've come regardless of who was here. This kid wanted to be courted throughout the whole process.

Does anyone have any insight into how UM handles the commits? I don't have any inside information, but it seems like they make their pitch and get a commit. Then they expect commits to drop interest in other programs.

I don't disagree with this process at all. I think we should only go after kids who are committed to coming here. Those who are undecided still need to be pitched, but it seems like Shannon and staff don't like to play games. Personally, I like it, don't know if you agree.

all canes-- take a breath dude!!!

caneinatl

Look, any idiot with a full understanding of the U team will realize we are at LEAST 2 yrs away from being competitive. If you think next year we win 11 games, yer stupid. It MIGHT be worse next year given the depth chart we have at the moment. Will it change? Yes. How fast? No one knows, but last years team was worse than the teams in the early-mid 70's and they were horrid.

Kirby is gone. EXCELLENT!! Hope he learns how to read a simple Cover 2 at Baylor.

Me J's family wanted "more" than a simple scholie for the kid. Why else do you think Shannon refused to call them? His phone wasn't working? Why else would he select L$U?

Simple fact is though, Shannon was supposed to be the second coming of Butch in recruiting and right now he's merely one half step better than Coker. It's not looking real promising.

This is really all Donna Shalala's fault. No money for coaches. Hiring a cheap HC who needed massive experience behind him to be successful and she cheaps out. Her AD is a buffoon who can't find his way past the buffet, let along pick coaches right and you think next year will be better? Yer nothing more than a typical fan that can't see what's really going on.

He and PJ are pu$$y a$$ dic*hea'ss who are soft. UM people, coaches and fans ares stupid for even setting our minds on these two losers. How in the world can you grow up a UM fan, yopur dad played for UM, and still go to gayturd land?????? His dad then, is a punk, never a cane. So good riddance you skinny ass hoe. Urban Meyer will turn you into a slow white boy TE.

As for PJ- Look, you anint that good Arthur Brown is better than you, and you just were to weak to face competition.

doc cane-- you're right--who knows how long it will take for this thing to turn around. however, i think you're judgement of shannon's performance on the recruiting front is a little off base. he, in many cases is still rebuilding lines of connection and credibility for the program.

shannon definitely has an uphill battle on his hands-- his first headcoaching job, limited money to recruit assistants, facilities in need of upgrading, and a new stadium probably too big to be filled by a most times fickle, and overly-critical fan-base from a small private school.

we can choose to be like every other base of fans-- demand to win now and if the wins don't come-- fire him tomorrow. or--

we could take a breath, settle in, realize that the program is evolving back to itself. that shannon, nix, the players, probably the new dc, and the program at large will have to grow back into greatness. shannon and the coordinators will have to work as hard to hone their crafts as coaches as the kids do to hone their craft as football players. its the hand we've been dealt-- and like true canes-- we'll take on the challenge-- and win!!!

hang in their cane nation!!!

caneinatl

In regards to ronnie g's posting.......HOnestly we mite be 2 years away of competing that is an aggreable statment but to say that randy shannon is only one half of Butch n one step better the coker is insane!!!! Randy shannon first year as head coach is acceptable a man of his caliber knows what it takes to succeed in any situation......Losing out players such as Pj and Patchan is ok when u got guys like Harris and Ben jones on there way to the U, Randy is gettin players with character that are going to bleed orange and green. THe defensive woes arent all of his fault like he stated numerous times he handed the job to Walton and didn't intefere, we will see who we get as our next DC my bet is that he will make huge improvements to a defense who has it all to carry our team. The Future is bright AT the U no matter if we lose some 5 star recruits who are pre madonnas....

My question to everyone is who do u think will eventually emerge as the qb Marve or Harris? My feelings are that Jacory Harris will eventually be the main guy after he gets stronger he has all of the intangibles to be great the leadership and knowledge

upNorth Cane-- I didn't compare rs to bd. that was doc cane's post. (see my post--ronnie g aka caneinatl) i agree with you that shannon is doing a good job and like the entire program is evolving back to its place of glory-- but it will take time and we should make sure we're patient enough to give it to him.

on the qb competition-- its going to be close-- the way it should be. what about the kid whose father started fed-ex??? cannon smith??? he could be a wild card in all of this-- for various reasons.

marve has a jump on everyone. i understand he did pretty well with the scout teams this year. i'm interested to see how all of these wide receivers are going to be used. perhaps nix has something up his sleeve.
