« The Hoops Report: Post BC loss | Main | DC hire "a home run" for Canes »

Wednesday's Q&A

Hate to do this to you guys, but a long day at the airport, followed by another long night helping my brother move is going to force me to answer questions later tonight and not do this week's session live.

My apologies. Feel free to start leaving questions for me below. I hope to be on tonight around midnight to answer them if you guys are willing to stay up that late.

UPDATE... 1:09 a.m. - OK, I'm finally going to start answering questions. For those of you who waited up until midnight I apologize. I was tied up with the move and didn't get home until now. I heard about the Bill Young rumors. I'll address it below.

IF that Young guy is the DC and he is that good that is great. But offensively could we please get Gary Stevens back to coach the Quarterbacks??!!! If he can make a guy like Walsh look as good as he did when he was at Miami imagine what he could do with studs like Marve, Harris, Smith and a 6Ft 7inch guy like Taylor Cook. Our QB's (aside from Dorsey) have had all the tools but no way's the production Jimmy Johnson's QB's had when Stevens was running the offense under Jimmy. Even Steve Walsh said the QB play went downhill since Stevens left when they brought in Erickson and he is right. Miami made a mistake by not hiring him as HC before, if he is around and would take the job lets try and get someone who we know can get the job done and get our offense like it used to be. If anybody wants to see some of Stevens work look at the 4th Qtr come back at Michigan in 88

Mandingo...the Canes BB team crashed back to earth against BC last night. Still feeling cocky about their chances this year?

Por favor hombre, dime la verdad?

if its true (Young) would be a solid hire. I was at the OB this year. They played really well with a lot less talent then VT had but truly out played them. Corner and DE as well as TE are major priorities this year whos in the picture and who do you think we have a solid shot at?

Guys... Coach Young denies accepting Miami job!

See blog at 8:52

Off topic...The naming of the new Dolphins coach does not seem to be generating any major excitement among fans so far. Greg Cote says he has to earn our trust? What's the word on the street?

what is your opinion on the chance of miami keeping buchannan? getting scott? bryant? harris? thanks a lot. i enjoy the insight that you provide and the honest as well as I belive credible way in which you report information.

Why are people saying Brandon harris is favoring LSu and florida over teh Canes? I dont see how he would not follow Theron And Davon to the U

Harris will be at the U. His brother runs track there. Both his teammates go there and his dad know RS very well..If they loose out on Harris it would be a huge shock and a major blow!...on a different note looks like manny is a no show tonight. I stayed up past my bedtime too...very dissappointing.

His flight must be delayed

how about that ... Gtech and UNC Bball game? we might have a chance ... what do you think?

LOl Miami has no chance vs UNC just to let u guys knw.......its crazy i group up a tar heel fan in Basketball and a Cane Fan in Football...i guess i get the best from both worlds

its unbelievable how much home court advantage plays into college basketball. GT lost to miami away who got blow out by BC. GT then went on to almost beat #1 unc at home.

Q: Dont you hate it when family asks you to help them move? Especially when they should be throwing out most of what they are taking? Posted by: pb | January 16, 2008 at 07:53 PM

A: It's funny you say that. I was thinking the same thing. But I couldn't let my bro down. It's turned out to be five days worth of moving. It started last Friday. And I hoped they would have been done by the time I came back from Boston. But tonight we put up the finishing touches. Moving is never fun.

Q: How good is the Miami Basketball team. They just confuse me, how bout you? Posted by: zac | January 16, 2008 at 07:53 PM

A: They're a good team, a team that has a chance to win 20 games or more. Last night was disheartening -- especially since it was the second game in a row Miami struggled shooting and because I think some of their deficiencies (point guard especially) were exposed a little further. But to steal a line from Dennis Green: This team is still what I thought they were. A team capable of making the NCAA Tournament and competing for a spot in the top seven of the conference. Either way at 14-2, Canes fans everywhere should be rejoicing. At least you can watch this team and feel like they've got a shot to win every night and at least they're giving solid efforts everytime out. There is no quitting.

Wazzzzz up Manny?! I don't know how many other people are still awake.

Q: Hey manny !!! Whats worst Miami Dade public Schools? or Univ of Miami Admissions? I just don't understand why other south fla, kids can get in to private universities such as Notre Dame, Duke, and other elite universities with nooo problem but we can't seem to enroll our recruits into the UM with ease. Our future recruits take the necessary steps but some are having transcript glitch, half credit short, not along their highschool kids take college courses and playing football. Its heart breaking as a fan and I can't even imagine as a recruit!!! Thanks, Posted by: KEEPTHEFAITH | January 16, 2008 at 07:57 PM

A: No need to go bonkers. KEEPTHEFAITH. I've been told several times the Northwestern guys have already been admitted into UM. It's a simple transcript delay. Miami-Dade schools does not release them until Friday. As far as a kid missing a half credit -- it happens. Besides, it's not like the kid isn't going to qualify for the fall. This was early enrollment -- that's a bonus. I think kids are actually get better prepared to get into college. How many academic casualties have their been lately? Not many. Miami-Dade and Broward's school systems have a tough job. Could they be doing better? Sure. But at least it seems the majority of guys are getting prepared for college earlier and earlier. That's a good thing. We used to have these conversations on National Signing Day. Or right before the start of fall practice. Now, it's happening in December and January.

Manny thanks for taking time to awnser questions

A: Wazzup 5'0. I'm a night owl what can I say?

A lot of questions 2 night...I'll post one I think is on the minds of a lot of Canes fans....If you were a guessing man, how will we fill out the remaining scholarship spots left? CB's? OL? or what....and who might fill those spots?

Q: Manny thanks for taking time to awnser questions. Posted by: WI Cane | January 17, 2008 at 01:25 AM

A: Promised I would.

manny what up been waiting for some newzzzzz

Manny do you know this guy:Brian Curtis
Senior Editor, CSTV

If so is he a good journalist?

He is the one who published that Young was hired...a 2 year deal to be DC at Miami...
Now it has been denied by many papers...

I'm still awake. =)

I know A LOT of rumors have been flying around about the next DC. Are these guys being considered and just turning the position down, or is it all just speculation???

Any news on the next AD??

A: Before I get to your question... damn I can't believe many of you are still awake. Anyway, I talked some folks inside the U tonight about that. Cornerback is a big priority. I was told Miami is willing to spend as many as four more scholarships on defensive backs (particularly corners). If I had to guess a pecking order...
CB Brandon Harris, S Vaughn Telemaque, CB Aaron Hester and maybe now former Miami Monsignor Pace athlete Adrian Bushell, whose now living out in Texas. I think Ben Jones is still the first target among offensive lineman. And I think Miami is going to make a hard push for a tight end before it is all said and done.

I've got one that is kind of off subject, but, since I am one of the few ones awake, maybe I'll get an answer....how come there is not more hype around the kids coming out of St.Thomas? They are the 5a state champs and I can't find a highly rated senior on the bunch, are they full of under classman or are they just not getting any love this year?

A: Can't say I know Brian. I just know what we've found out tonight is that Young has not been hired yet. I got the heads up around 9 p.m. tonight when I took a break to check my email and immediately made some phone calls. I was told by folks at UM that wasn't the case. This all could just be Young or his agent trying to turn this into a bidding war between the other two teams courting him. I was told earlier tonight before this news broke that Miami has still not officially interviewed anyone for the position on UM's campus. Does that mean Randy Shannon isn't looking and talking to folks? I think we'd be stupid to assume that. But I was told ultimately this probably will not happen until after signing day. Right now, I think there's just a speculation going on. And so do many other journalists.

hey manny...it's only 10:37p here in LA so glad to actually be "live" with you. you usually are live when i'm still at work so I'm unable to participate.
thanks for staying up and being so committed to us fans.
Go Canes!

A: Their junior class is where the high-profile college talent is. Larry Blustein and I were talking about this back during the state championships. They've got a lot of good juniors and sophomores -- especially at receiver and running back. You'll hear more from St. Thomas in 2009 and 2010.

hey manny, do you know if the university is "officially" going to get involved with the Alumni game at the OB?

Manny what are your feelings on Luiget and Ramon Buchannon?

Oh wow, I had no idea, so St. Thomas could be this years Miami Northwestern for the next couple of years then.

Hey manny your man of your word sorta like my dog baxter and you speak spanish also you guys have a bunch in common actually but my question is who has been the most impressive miami dade high school football player you've watched over the years.

I love scotch, night cap anyone??

Q: yo main man manny. so what's up with brandon harris? big time recruit and i feel a top priority at CB for this miami fball team. very proud of randy but still really getting worried about him. way i see it, the longer he goes WITHOUT committing to us is another day where our chances are going down. your thoughts??? Posted by: adamg | January 16, 2008 at 07:59 PM

A: I've said this before, I think Brandon is trying to soak up the recruiting experience to the fullest. There have been many other high profile guys in Miami who we all thought were locks to go to UM who wait until the final moment to announce they're picking the Canes. It's just the way things were done before. Today, there are so many kids who want to get a head start on college and they enroll early. And that's great. Brandon wants to enjoy high school to the fullest. I can't blame him. He's a heck of a player and a heck of kid. I'm not sure a lot of people know, but Harris actually carries a 4.3 GPA. He's very close to his dad, who coaches both the football and track team. Booker T. Washington won a track and field championship last year. Brandon wants to try to win another track title this season. That's why he's not enrolling early. I think in the end, he picks Miami and stays close to home and his dad. But right now, he's just trying to enjoy the recruiting process. Again, you can't hate him for that.

I am hearing that TJ Bryant is just as interested about the Track team as the Football team for whatever school he picks...

Q: Manny, do you have any news on any JUCO transfers that are headed UM's way? Posted by: JoeCane | January 16, 2008 at 08:06 PM

A: Right now, the only JUCO transfer headed UM's way is fullback Patrick Hill. The only other spot I think you could see the Hurricanes go the JUCO route is on the offensive line or even tight end.

Q: Big weekend coming up on the visits front as 5 of the 9 coming in haven't committed to the U; any likely commits from that group, specifically the Cali kids? Posted by: OrangeandGreen | January 16, 2008 at 08:18 PM

A: I was told earlier tonight UM feels very good about getting all of the California kids. Then, again, they felt pretty good about getting Matt Patchan. I think it all comes down to the trip and whether the kids realize its really a 6 hour flight between here and home. That's usually what kills it for the Canes with West Coast kids. If Randy and his staff can make them forget about that, then UM really does have shot. Besides, there's a few openings in that secondary last I checked.

Speaking of Juco's, are we still in the running for Juco Olineman Jamarcus Webb?

Hey manny do u have any news on how the in home visit went for shannon at the liuget household..........

Q: Manny, how solid is my local boy Ramon Bucannon Lb from Palm Bay high? Please don't tell me is going to decommitt?

Brevard County has numerous of talent. from the late cane geats like...Hurricanes Hurley Brown s,db,(91-94)(Darryl Spencer wr(1994-95) SafetyBubba Mcdowell,
John Holmes#1 West Va, #17Danny Verpale Usf, Eddie Haupt Uf, #21 Jax JagsReggie Nelson#1 Uf, Joe cohen#20 UF, 49ers, Xavier XMAN Carter LSU, Now in olympics, Neefty Moffet #59 FSU,Lauraunt Robinson wr Falcons, southeren illinois etc etc.. YOU ALL GET MY DRIFT? Posted by: 321cane | January 16, 2008 at 08:21 PM

A: I said this awhile back. You got to be worried about Ramon Buchanon because he's in Gator Country. He's got a lot of people who around him who are trying to push him towards Gainesville. Does that mean he'll stray? I hear the Canes are confident they'll stay with him. But when a kid commits early to UM from an area that isn't Cane friendly it creates problems because the kid ends up getting an earful for a long time about staying close to home. It's always better for UM when they get kids from out of area late in the game. It's easier for them to stick.

Hey manny do u have any news on how the in home visit went for shannon at the liuget household..........

Hey Manny, any rumors out there who might not qualify and go to prep of juco or might have to grey shirt?

Q: Hey manny do u have any news on how the in home visit went for shannon at the liuget household.......... Posted by: UpNorth Cane | January 17, 2008 at 01:52 AM

A: I read the article on Canesport. Despite the comments from his mother saying she wouldn't have a problem if he decided to stay home and go to UM, but I'm still on the other side of the fence on that one. I'll try to talk to Corey myself soon and gauge the situation. I still think it UM has a great shot.

Do you Aldarious is going to have an Andre Johnson type career here

i love lamp

Q: Manny, Are the current players available for interviews and, if so, can you do an interview with: Kanye, Marve, JJ, Cooper
And, get their opinion on last season performance, next year team, and personal goals for next season? Posted by: Kanesville | January 16, 2008 at 08:24 PM

A: I spoke to UM SID Rick Korch about getting some of these guys over the next few weeks and he said there's a good chance I could speak to a few of them. But freshmen right now are off limits. I'll let you know who and when I get someone.

Hey manny thanx for answering my question bro I live up In Rhode Island man and im a die hard cane fan and i finally get a question answered lol.....

WHat are our chances with Alonzo Lawrence the Cb from Mississippi i heard hes coming for a visit

Q: I know A LOT of rumors have been flying around about the next DC. Are these guys being considered and just turning the position down, or is it all just speculation??? Any news on the next AD?? Posted by: The U Dynasty | January 17, 2008 at 01:30 AM

A: Sorry I missed this one before. But I kind of answered it already too. No news on the AD front. But look for Barry Jackson or Michelle Kaufman to break that story when it happens. They are all over it for us. The defensive coordinator spot is just speculation right now.

IDk if im the only one..But i think we need to have ALlen Bailey out thea no matter if its on the Dline or as a Linebacker the kid is a freak of nature any good hit he puts on someone can be a fumble or basically career ending lol

Q: Hey manny your man of your word sorta like my dog baxter and you speak spanish also you guys have a bunch in common actually but my question is who has been the most impressive miami dade high school football player you've watched over the years. I love scotch, night cap anyone?? Posted by: Ron Burgandy | January 17, 2008 at 01:44 AM

A: Ron... finally another apperance from you. How is San Diego this time of year?

Best Miami-Dade player... I've answered this one before. I have many answers. But the guys who looked unbelievable in high school were Frank Gore, Andre Johnson, Roscoe Parrish, Willie Williams, Ricky Jean-Francois, Dwayne Bowe, I'd throw Jacory Harris and Sean Spence in there now.
