« The Hoops Report: Post BC loss | Main | DC hire "a home run" for Canes »

Wednesday's Q&A

Hate to do this to you guys, but a long day at the airport, followed by another long night helping my brother move is going to force me to answer questions later tonight and not do this week's session live.

My apologies. Feel free to start leaving questions for me below. I hope to be on tonight around midnight to answer them if you guys are willing to stay up that late.

UPDATE... 1:09 a.m. - OK, I'm finally going to start answering questions. For those of you who waited up until midnight I apologize. I was tied up with the move and didn't get home until now. I heard about the Bill Young rumors. I'll address it below.

Hey Manny, any rumors out there who might not qualify and go to prep of juco or might have to grey shirt?

Q: Manny, Do you think that the MNW kids will have any problems with admission by the deadline? Is this routine stuff or have you heard there are real issues? Posted by: St.PeteCane | January 16, 2008 at 08:24 PM

A: I've been told repeatedly there are no real issues with those Northwestern kids. Simply a matter of when Miami-Dade releases its transcripts. All four have already been admitted into UM. It's simply a transcript hold up.

Q: Hey Manny, any rumors out there who might not qualify and go to prep of juco or might have to grey shirt? Posted by: 5 O'Clock Somewhere | January 17, 2008 at 02:07 AM

A: Fort Myers DB CJ Odom and Crawfordville CJ Holton. Odom has had academic issues from what I've heard and Holton could have trouble with folks in Tallahassee who might not be happy to see him come to UM.

have you anything about any other players possibly transfering out of or into UM ?

Q: manny, its perhaps noteworthy that rs has not hired a defensive coordinator yet. as someone else already pointed out, we are well out of the bowl season and past the coaches conference, however we have yet to hire a dc. the party line seems to be that rs and the staff are focused on recruiting (and rightly so), however i wonder if this isn't just spin to conceal other potential challenges like-- we're having hard time competing with the salary packages offered by other schools because shalala and the crew are being tight with the purse strings-- or-- few coaches of note want to come this way not wanting to deal with the likelihood that rs (a spectacular dc in his own right) will probably be looking over their shoulders-- or worse (and i hesitate to believe this)-- rs, doesn't have the "pull" (money shortage notwithstanding) to attract well-known coaching talent at the dc level position. i'm not panicking. in rs i trust. just wondering what's up???? Posted by: 1caneinatl | January 16, 2008 at 08:25 PM

A: Good thoughts Cane in The ATL. It could be a lot of things. But one thing I don't believe is that is Miami isn't attractive enough. There's at least five solid reasons to come to UM and they each fit on a finger. The other is this defensive class UM is putting together looks unreal. The other is there is nothing to do but look good. Whoever gets this job can't do any worse than what UM did last season to close the season. With better talent on the way in, Miami is bound to get better.

The only drawbacks I see are money (which I believe is the biggest reason) and maybe the thought of Shannon looking over your shoulder. Ultimately, I don't think this job is going to end up in Randy's hands. I can't see him doing this on his own -- not when he's said being the head coach and overseeing so much takes up so much time. Not when this program needs a strong leader at the top.

But I do think there's a chance Randy could go out and get someone with a little bit of a different style than his. Not too much. But somewhat different, so at the very least they don't have to feel like someone is looking over the shoulder trying to correct mistakes. I think the person who gets this job is someone like Patrick Nix. Someone who hasn't been in coaching very long, but is young, inexpensive and has a little bit of an attitude about him. Recruiting isn't such a big deal because the other assistants are who usually handle it. This guy though has to have a bright mind and knows how to change the feeling around the UM locker room after what the Canes did last season.

Q: Have you anything about any other players possibly transfering out of or into UM? Posted by: generalcane | January 17, 2008 at 02:11 AM

A: Heard rumblings about DL Chris Perry possibly bolting. Perry I was told near the end of last season is someone who had a serious enough injury before he ever came to UM that coaches now believe he might not ever overcome them. So, could Perry end up leaving? If the Canes need scholarships, I don't see why not if his injury is career threatening.

thanks manny, perry is just the person person i was thinking about. there is rumor on canestime.com message board about him leaving.

Q: Hey Manny, is TJ Bryant a realistic target? ESPN seems to think Miami has a great shot at him but other sites think he is a FSU lock due to location. Isn't his mom from down here and will that factor in at all? Thanks and keep up the good work. Posted by: justin | January 16, 2008 at 08:38 PM

A: TJ's mom from what I've been told graduated from Miami Central. Does that mean UM is going to get him? Not necessarily. It's tough for Miami to get kids at Tallahassee Lincoln. It would be like Bobby Bowden coming down and getting someone from Miami Northwestern. It hasn't happened in a while now. I think Bryant could come to UM. But I don't think its likely.

Soo Manny ur saying that basically we are gonna be out of luck with Cj Holton? how much of a lost do u think that is ?

Q: What are the odds we get Corey Liuget? Randy supposedly met him and his family for 2 hours on a recent in home visit. Did that visit improve our chances? I heard his mom was impressed. Put him, Fortson, and Regis together and you got a dominant rotation in the middle once these guys are ready for the college game. Posted by: justin | January 16, 2008 at 08:45 PM

A: In case you are looking for it Justin, I answered this one a little earlier. Just do a search on Liuget.

Q: Soo Manny ur saying that basically we are gonna be out of luck with Cj Holton? how much of a lost do u think that is ? Posted by: UpNorth Cane | January 17, 2008 at 02:29 AM

A: I wouldn't say UM is out of luck. I would just say Miami could have trouble keeping him. I think UM coaches were hoping he'd be a much later switch so FSU coaches wouldn't have time to work on him.

Q: hey manny whats good. corners how many are bringing in. heard anything about george baker getting an offer. do you think randy is done with the firings. coach pann can go as special teams coach. Posted by: dante | January 16, 2008 at 08:52 PM

A: I'm doing good Dante, thanks for asking. Miami is definitely trying to find some corners. I was told tonight they're willing to take as many as four with this class. I'm not sure if Baker is at the top of the list. He still doesn't have an offer. I think UM could come in late. But it could end up costing them if they don't get the other guys they're trying to solidify now.

Regarding the firings, I think Randy is done. I was told more than a month ago it was likely just going to be two coaches. Pannunzio is a solid recruiter.

Hey Manny,

Thanks for doing this! Any news on Jim Morris and the Baseball team?

Manny,
I love your blog out here in SoCal. I read it regularly to keep in touch with my canes.

Question: Don't you find it a little odd that these firings are happening around this time of year? Why would RS wait so long after the season to make these changes? Thoughts?
Thanks.

Q: Any updates on B. Washington or B. jones? Any shot we get any of the visiting kids this weekend? Thanks Posted by: Carolina Cane | January 16, 2008 at 09:18 PM

A: None. Brandon Washington isn't headed anywhere but UM. I think it's all an attention scheme. Ben Jones is a guy who I think follows his high school teammates to UM and rounds out the OL Miami signs. There are a total of 11 guys coming in for a visit this weekend I've been told. It would be nice to see UM get at least one of these California players to commit.

A: I think its just out of respect for the guys he's letting go. Remember, these are guys Randy decided to either keep, bring in or promote last year. These guys have families, folks Randy brings in tight to the program. I think part of the reason he's waited is (1) not to make a big deal about it and (2) to give those other guys a chance to find jobs elsewhere. When you announce it right after the season, it almost looks like he's being a bully, laying the blame somewhere else. The coaches in this business all know each other. Randy has to keep the idea UM is a family. If word gets out among coaches he's a caring man who gave a guy like Mosely a chance to go out to the coaches convention and find another job before he officially cut his paychecks, then, it makes Randy look good.

Q: Thanks for doing this! Any news on Jim Morris and the Baseball team? Posted by: Vivek | January 17, 2008 at 02:38 AM

A: Sorry Vivek. Got nothing new for you.

Manny I read on scout that telemaques top two schools are USC and Oregon...why r we so high on this guy and out of the kids from california which one of them would fit UM perfectly

Q: thanks mannypi-- i guess manny is still helping his brother move his stuff-- exhale-- keep grindin' rs!!! keep your poise cane fans!!! Posted by: 1caneinatl | January 16, 2008 at 09:23 PM

A: Right around then CaneinATL when you asked your question I was trying to squeeze a piece of furniture too big up my staircase. Sorry I kept you waiting!

Also,

I haven't heard a lot from Canes sources on Nick Perry and Keith Wells. What's the deal with our chances of landing either/both of them?

A: He's the most talented of the bunch. I personally think its a longshot Miami gets any of these California kids. It's tough for the Canes to get kids from out there because of the distance. Same for the USC and Oregon's of the world when it comes to Florida kids. But you never know.

Q: I haven't heard a lot from Canes sources on Nick Perry and Keith Wells. What's the deal with our chances of landing either/both of them? Posted by: Vivek | January 17, 2008 at 02:48 AM

A: The Canes are pushing hard to get these kids. I was told tonight Wells is coming this weekend and Perry is coming the following weekend. Again, another situation where Miami is fighting an uphill battle with schools near their hometown to win them over. I'd say it's about a 30 percent chance Miami gets either of those.

Q: will they paint the logo at mid feild and will they paint the endzones for all or any hurricane games at dolphin stadium. In tampa for usf bull games it seems to be a game to game thing. Also how do you think the attendece will compare to the ob? Posted by: ryan | January 16, 2008 at 09:59 PM

A: The Dolphins promised to create a complete UM atmosphere for all home games with all the trimmings and fat. Attendance? I think its going to be similar to the OB. If this team is good, then most games shoudl been near capacity. If not, there will be between 25-35,000 folks for an average opponent.

hey manny,

do u know the real story on why l. mccrays' schlorship was taken back?

Manny,...

What ever happened to Deonte thinking about transferring?

Good job

Q: How do UM's basketball coaches feel about Rios' developement and work ethic this season?

Many of the football coaches are developing a rep as good recruiters...that said what could possibly be their strategy in NOT calling guys like Brandon Washington very often. BW recently told Rivals that he is just now starting to get calls again from UM. Is this a case of Rivals overblowing the facts or is there truth to it? Posted by: RyanC | January 16, 2008 at 10:10 PM

A: Regarding Rios, Haith addressed this briefly after the Penn game. He said Rios still isn't doing what he needs to do defensively -- especially on screens. Everyone knows Haith's fortay is defense (or at least stressing it). When guys are struggling defensively, they aren't going to see a lot of court time. Ultimately, I just think Eddie is being a freshman. His timing, shot and flow is just off. The only time I saw him play comfortably was in Puerto Rico. He only played on minute against Boston College. Barring an injury, I think he's rarely going to get a chance to play the rest of this season.

Manny,
What has surprised you the most so far about the recruiting that is being done by Randy and his staff this year? Thanks.

Posted by: RyanC | January 16, 2008 at 10:10 PM

A: To answer the second part of your question... I think this whole Washington thing is probably overblown. The guy who coached him for three years at Miami Edison is Corey Bell, who was hired last year as Randy Shannon's right hand man. Washington to me seems like someone who simply trying to get attention. Are Miami coaches calling him? Maybe not as much as others. But they want him and he knows that.

Q: hey manny, do u know the real story on why l. mccrays' schlorship was taken back? Posted by: brooklyncane | January 17, 2008 at 02:54 AM

A: I think Miami felt he wasn't as good as some of the other guys the ended up with. I think they felt like ultimately McCray was going to stray. So, they cut their ties to avoid having to deal with all the way up to national signing day.

Q: What ever happened to Deonte thinking about transferring? Good job Posted by: Daddeh | January 17, 2008 at 02:54 AM

A: Squashed. Too messy from what I was told for Miami to get him. It got out too quickly and Urban Meyer made sure it wouldn't happen.

Q: Manny, what has surprised you the most so far about the recruiting that is being done by Randy and his staff this year? Thanks. Posted by: CaneintheOC | January 17, 2008 at 02:56 AM

A: I can't say I'm surprised at anything Randy's guys have done in recruiting. There's no question everybody knows UM dropped the ball when it came to recrutiting in the final few years Larry Coker was coach here. Shannon simply picked it up full steam ahead and took a different approach -- the one which used to work so well for UM. He attacked guys locally, got them to buy into his system, then, now, his guys are going outside and across the rest of the nation to fill in other spots. It's the way things needed to be done and somehow the previous staff forgot how to do.

Manny - Thanks for the responses.

Manny - How are you going to get up in the morning?!?! I'm only here because I don't have class until 2!

Q: Manny, what do you know about Alonzo Lawrence? And is it true that Robert Marve was not offered a scolarship to either florida of fsu, if so why was that? Posted by: ryan | January 16, 2008 at 10:15 PM

A: Don't know much about Lawrence other than he's real good, one of the top five in the country. Miami has sort of come on late for him and they're likely to get a visit from him either Jan. 25 or the weekend after.

As far as Marve, I vaguely remember his recruiting process now for some reason. I know he certainly wasn't a guy The Big 3 were all over or anything. He was committed to Alabama. But come to think of it, I'm not sure if he ever got an offer from an FSU and UF. Doesn't mean the kid isn't good. I think he can be special.

Q: Manny - How are you going to get up in the morning?!?! I'm only here because I don't have class until 2! Posted by: Vivek | January 17, 2008 at 03:09 AM

A: I can sleep in a little. I've got a basketball press conference at 2:30 to attend. But other than my dog Dexter, I don't have any kids to take care of in the morning.

Q: Who's this new name from Texas that Rivals reported about. Bushell? His HC coach says he's serious about Miami and that he's a heck of a CB. Any truth to this?

Also, please tell me George Baker is gonna get an offer. His exactly the type of kid we've been missing out on the past few years. Posted by: JoeyJr | January 16, 2008 at 10:40 PM

A: Adrian Bushell. Speedy kid. He's actually someone who played at Miami Monsignor Pace until last season. He doesn't have a UM offer yet, but is said to be visiting this weekend. I think he could be the guy Miami ulitmately ends up getting this weekend at cornerback.

Unfortunately, I George Baker is a back-burner guy right now for the Canes. I saw the kid play twice, both times he was gutting it out, playing injured. I know he's quick and big. Larry Blustein gives him high praise. But the thoughts at The U from what I hear are that he's not UM material. The Canes have certainly made mistakes before. Hopefully this won't be one of them.

Q: Manny: Hope the move went well and that your back is still in good shape. This is my first real year following recruiting closely. Tell me what happens on National Signing Day. What if we have more commits that scholarships available? Also, if we many recruits not sign with us, can we offer new prospects that day....ie. Baker (CB), Jonathan Jackson (DE) or maybe other prospects? Thanks Posted by: ChicagoCane | January 16, 2008 at 10:40 PM

A: National Signing Day is simply the first day guys can officially sign scholarships. It's not the end all be all. If I'm not mistaken, its more like national signing week. So, if UM doesn't get somebody on NSD they could get someone to fill in that spot a few days later. Teraz McCray is a great example.

If Miami ends up signing more kids than they have scholarships for, three things usually happen. One, the kid could be grey-shirted -- asked to enroll the following January. Two, they could be asked to be spend a year at prep school or playing JUCO ball. Three, a scholarship will suddenly appear when someone "transfers."

Q: Is The Don involved with getting the early enrollees into the U? Is she putting pressure on the SLOW Dade County process? Seems like Dade should get off their butts and get these kids into school. Nothing helps the county out more than having a high graduation rate! Posted by: West Coast Ibis | January 16, 2008 at 10:43 PM

A: Wishful thinking Ibis. Kids nowadays are simply trying to get a leg up. Just like when going pro early was cool, going to college early is now the cool thing to do.

Manny, does how Greg Threat ended his career at the U have any effect on getting kids out of Lincoln specifically, and Tallahassee in general? I know its difficult as it is, but would that have an impact?

Manny whens the next countdown? The last two were great.

Wow. I've been drinking vodka and Monster (I prefer red bull, but when it's free, I won't complain) and thought I'd come on to see if any word's been given on the DC. Little did I know that the Man(ny) himself would be on posting.

We love you in LA, Manny! All the news that's fit to blog. We appreciate it.

Q: Manny, Has Sonny Lubick been contacted about the DC position? Would love to have him back on staff even though he turned down the bigger gig the year before? Would there be too big a clashing of egos w/ him on board under Shannon? Posted by: Russell | January 16, 2008 at 10:57 PM

A: Not sure Russell. Not sure if there would be a clashing of egos. After all, he coached Randy. The biggest issue is Lubick is 70. I can't see UM bringing him in on that alone. And does Lubick still want to coach? I don't think so.

A: I don't think it does. I think the FSU influence is what makes it so hard. The Threat situation wasn't great. But it wasn't terrible either.

Q: Manny whens the next countdown? The last two were great. Posted by: TampaCane | January 17, 2008 at 03:22 AM

A: I'm going to record one Thursday afternoon with Larry Blustein. I should have it posted on The Herald's website by Friday afternoon at the latest.

By the by, I know all of our fellow Cane fans love the player's version of Ballin' Boys. But I was watching our first NC against Nebraska on a tape I recorded off of ESPN Classic (hate how they skip through key parts of the game on a whim), and after Nebraska went for two and missed, the announcers kept quite quite as the camera panned around the OB (*sniff*) and an amazingly awful/awesome song played that sounded like a Ballin' Boys circa '83/'84. I think it was called "Hurricane Warning" and featured an awesome line about beating Nebraska and kicking them "where the corn don't grow."

Would anyone have ANY idea what I'm talking about? And, by god, if you do know, would you know where to find a copy of this song?

I know it's not a typical Q & A question, but shoot, Manny, you've got a line on all things The U. Any help would be sweeeeeeeet.

Q: Juan, what were ure greek letters @ THE FIU? Posted by: RT6 | January 16, 2008 at 11:01 PM

A: STMC. Skips Too Much Class.

Q: Whats up with Tommy Streeter? Posted by: Canesjunkie | January 16, 2008 at 11:23 PM

A: Not much in the way of the Canes. Everyday that passes is another day I think it becomes more and more likely he skips town.

An example of Hurricane Warning

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pHj-hgRqMdg

So. Awesome.

Q: Can you give us any insight into the relationship between Nix and Shannon? Any word on the offense we will be running next year? Posted by: Canesjunkie | January 16, 2008 at 11:24 PM

A: Randy really likes Nix. The two have very similar personalities. As far as the offense, I believe we won't see much different in the way of playcalling -- just a different level of execution because of the personnel.

Q: manny my ?'s for U
1. will buchanon be a cane? Maybe.
2. will robinson be a cane? Maybe.
3. what is the news on liguet? Same.
4. have we offered Baker? No.
5. will young be the dc? No.
6. is aubrey hill are wr coach? Maybe.
7. is randy on a short leash? No.
