Courtside blog: Duke 88, UM 73 (F)

I'm here crammed into my seat on press row and living the dream. I'm surrounded by the Crazies at Cameron Indoor Stadium for UM-Duke this afternoon.

How are things back home? What are the latest rumblings in recruiting?

As usual, I'll bring you my thoughts throughout the game. So far, I've been impressed by the amount of homework the Dukies do here. All of the Crazies have a sheet of paper with facts about Miami and its players. Can't wait to hear what they start screaming once this one starts.

The funniest thing I've seen so far: watching members of the press climb over the media table because they can't walk behind the students to get to their seats.

FIRST HALF...
15:39 left, UM 7, Duke 6:
As expected, the Canes have come out a little nervous. A few early slips and turnovers -- but they're winning! Early foul trouble could be the story here. I think Lance Hurdle, James Dews and Jack McClinton all already got one foul each.
11:56 left, Duke 15, UM 11: Well, I don't think I've ever seen this before. The Crazies had it right: Let Them Play! Miami has 9 fouls -- two each for McClinton and Dews. Duke has 7. That's been the story so far. And the fact Duke is shooting horribly from the field and the line. Edwin Rios is going to see major minutes here for UM with McClinton and Dews out.
7:01 left, Duke 25, UM 19: Miami has 12 fouls and there is no doubt this game has been tightly officiated. It definitely has affected both teams ability to get into a flow. Duke has missed so many shot. Anyway... the best thing about Duke isn't their team. It's the fans. They just called all for Crazy Towel Guy. This guy sitting in the middle of the stands, gets up and starts waving his towel. Another highlight... hearing them shout to UM their King (Taylor King) is better then UM's (Anthony King).
3:08 left, Duke 29, UM 26: Hard to explain what I've watched here. Duke has been awful shooting from the line and the field. Miami hasn't taken advantage and has simply been racking up fouls. I guess the important thing here is Miami is still in this game. But when Duke starts sinking shots, this one could get ugly quickly.
:50.6 left, Duke 38, UM 31: Perhaps the most amazing thing is that Miami has kept itself in this game without much from McClinton (who has sat a lot with two foul).
HALFTIME: If you are looking for reasons why this game is where it is... Duke shot 31 percent in the first half (10 of 32) and was 10 of 21 from the line. UM drew 15 personal fouls and outscored Duke 20-2 in the paint.

SECOND HALF...
15:39 left, Duke 54, UM 40: Despite all their struggles today, the Canes had managed to keep this a single digit game until now. DeMarcus Nelson's steal and lay-up pushed it to 49-38. Since Lance Hurdle's layup with 17:55, Duke has gone on a 9-2 run to break this one open.
12:19 left, Duke 63, UM 50: The Blue Devils lead stretched to 18 a little while ago, but Miami has kept fighting. Brian Asbury has a pretty good game. He's got 10 points and a bunch of boards.
11:24 left, Duke 65 UM 52: After this last time out, the Crazies sang their favorite song: Carolina Eat [Expletive].
7:27 left, Duke 71, UM 61: Of all the funny things I've heard today, nothing is funnier or more to the point than what the Crazies just yelled out to officials: "POWER TRIP!" Good lord this game has been poorly officiated. This is no exaggeration. I'm dying to read the final boxscore and count them up.
5:37 left, Duke 75, UM 64: Miami had its chance to trim it under 10, but Jack McClinton missed a three-pointer. There might just not be enough time to pull any magic here even if McClinton gets hot.
2:50 left, Duke 79, UM 67: Got to give UM credit for battling in this game the way they have. It makes you wonder how things might have turned out differently if there were so many foul calls. Duke is obviously more talented, but not overwhelmingly.
:47.6 left, Duke 86, UM 73.

I was wondering around on the rivals website earlier today. I didn't remember being in the running for Vince Young. If you look at his profile, it has Miami listed. Its interesting to look at other teams past recruiting classes and see what there "star" players were rated. Also interesting is how many kids had the U listed in there schools they were considering.

Manny I was wondering about Jeremy Lewis from West Palm Beach. Is he still a commit? I seen Randy Shannon and Clint Hurt Friday afternoon at a Chills in Palm Beach, killing time before a visit with Lewis.

He's one to worry about because he actually went out and took all of his visits. I'd say if there is a commitment list to worry about: Jeremy Lewis and Kendall Thompkins are two guys to put high on that list.

U stand for excellence ...
cellar-dwelling AIN'T gonna cut it ...
HOT SEAT

Our 3pt shooting defense has got to be the worst in the ACC. There was one good thing about the game...Rios got some PT, and looked not that bad for the first time all year. Also, we should use Ray Hicks more. In the post, offensively speasking, he plays bigger than Collins, King, and Graham.

Hey Manny, any chance we land Alonzo Lawrence?

Considering I expected us to be down by 20 at the 10min mark of the 2nd half I am not that disappointed.

Rios played well and held his own, I think our guys need to hit their free throws and hit
their 3pt shots when open.

Manny, every once and a while we land a recruit out of nowhere - one that perhaps didn't visit, or that didn't have the U high on their list (think LeSean McCoy before he didn't grade in). Do you know of any names that may pop out of nowhere on NSD?

elliott

alonzo lawrence committed to alabama yesterday

Ladies and gentleman, i was at the italian men's suits store down here, in homestead...and saw Homestead OLB Marcus Robinson getting his suit for NSD....that guy looks like a stud....

Yeah Marcus!!! Way to do it big!

Why isn't Shockey at the Super Bowl??? He's acting like a baby, I never expected this from him. He needs to support the team.

My Giants got the bowl tomorrow..feel sorry for Wilfork and Merriweather. But good for Feagles, Sinorice Moss, Shockey, and William Joseph.

Damn our little school produces a lot a studs.

Saban's not finished yet, Alonzo Lawrence commits
Touted cornerback Alonzo Lawrence has picked Alabama over Miami-FL and Mississippi, the Sun Herald reports.
Lawrence caught 30 passes including 11 for touchdowns as a senior. He also returned five kickoffs for scores, one punt for a touchdown, and returned two fumbles to paydirt as well.

I can't believe Saban can still recruit with his reputation...he's a good recruiter.

South Carolina is going to take our TE project, Tommy Streeter, and make him their no.1 WR...PERSPECTIVE *

Robnyce,

Were we watching the same game? Rios looked terrible, without even looking at the stat sheet I'd be surprised if he had more combined assists and pts than turnovers.

rebecca

do you ever go to a game. can you name more than 3 players in the acc. the last thing we need is stirring up haith must go talk.
the guy is in his 4th year , he's had only 3 recruiting classes because he got the job late. miami is in the toughest basketball conference and nobody cares in miami. when they start caring maybe haith will be able to land a few more players. everybody knows miami has the worst and most impatient fans do you really think they could land a big name coach. haith works hard and is fine. the best miami will ever do is the top 4 of the conference.

Shoot, I was close

Rios had 4 points and 2 assists versus 4 Turnovers, oh yeah he held his own and played a solid game!

rusell, the team lost by 15 pts.
Rios at least "moved" the ball better. I hope Haith let's him penetrate a bit more. We are not dribbling into the zone and kicking the ball out. This is one play that we are not using.

I have heard that Rios was more of a slash and passer type of guard and Haith needs to start getting creative on O.

If you know some BB, the only guard that has "free reign" to penetrate, but can't seem to have the "eyes" for it is Hurdle.

If we play this agressive against the rest of ACC, we should win 5-6 of remaining games.

Fresh,

Admittedly I do not know much about basketball but while watching today's game I paid attention to Rios everytime he touched the ball because reading the previous blogs a lot of posts had to do with his PT and overall play or lack there of mainly; due to Haith not giving him the minutes. Other things I noticed with my limited knowledge of the sport was Miami misses to many "free throws" does not guard against the 3 well and commits too many fouls. In years past the games I attended during the Hamilton days when I lived in Miami this was their downfall as well especially the TOs which I failed to mention a sentence ago. The Clemson game was nice because they actually closed out a game something that they couldn't do back then as well.

here is the deal with our basketball team. first we need to get a pure point guard. Secondly we need to play more of a up tempo style of ball that gives the open man the right to shot the ball. I saw at one point Duke had 29 3pt FG attemps and made 12 to our 5 and made 2. We need more 3 pt FG attempts. Every team that we have lost they have killed us behind the 3 pt arc. Also need more speed especially on the perimeter. We are a team on the rise and i still have Faith in Haith.

Rios is a pure point guard. He should get better the more minutes he plays. Haith should have been playing him more. I think he controlled the game well. He needs to start shooting more to help the team in scoring.

Perimeter defense. We don't have any. Duke does. Thats why they had so many three's and we didn't.

Does anybody know when Streeter is going to announce?

Streeter announces tonight.

streeter to announce at 9pm

SCOUT IS SAYING WR MARTAVIOUS ODOMS A CANE

I stand corrected, Rivals is saying his quote "I'm coming to Miami" was misunderstood. Looks like we gotta wait. Maybe Streeter at 9 will do it.

I hope we land Streeter that would be huge for us

According to Scout.com, Odom states that he will sign with da U on a Track Scholarship...he will not be able to play football his Freshamn year...this kid really wants to come to da U bcs he could sign with Michigan (amongst others) on a football scholarship...and Michigan aint no bum program...

I actually believe that Streeter will sign with S. Carolina...I'd be shocked if he chooses da U 2nite...

Off topic 4 a lil bit...As good as da Giants are playing so far (they're playing better football right now despite da score)...I don't think they're going to beat da Pats...which is a testament to how good da Pats are...

wow!!! what a game...Congrats to all da Giants fans out there

And the Fins are still the only undefeated team!!!!!!

Any word on what happened with the Streeter announcement?

Giants baby!!!! Merriweather got trucked twice!!! Coker recruit.

Haven't heard on Streeter, but expect him to go to SC. What about Ray Buchanan? Any news on the visit.

I gotta say Im getting excited about NSD. Thanks for giving Us Cane junkies what We need Manny.

streeter actually announces tonight. anyone know the deal with odoms? is he coming and is it on a track scholarship?
