Recruiting updates

OK, I'm here at Booker T. Washington for the Brandon Harris announcement. I'll keep you posted.

12:32 p.m. - Harris is wearing a suit and tie and is sitting in the center of the auditorium floor. He is set to announce on ESPN and in front of us at 1:05 p.m.
12:56 p.m. - Got to love Ice Harris. He's got the crowd here on edge talking up a storm about his players. His best quote about the two Booker T. receivers headed to UM: "Randy Shannon is getting it done folks. You want to talk about excitement. You want to talk about thrills. The U is coming back strong with these two cats."
12:58 p.m. - Brandon Harris is starting to speak... "I just want to thank my teammates, my assistant coaches, my brother, everybody for putting me in this position."
1:00 p.m. - Brandon Harris... "I'm nervous right now. I'm nervous. I'd like to thank all the schools who offered me scholarships."
1:05 p.m. - Brandon Harris is going to The U! "It's been a long decision and growing up. My heart... I'm a Cane!"

* The big news from this afternoon is obviously the switch pulled by Melbourne Palm Bay linebacker Ramon Buchanon, who was once a Cane, then a Gator and a Cane in the end.
* Canesport.com reported Palm Beach Lakes defensive tackle Jeremy Lewis is sticking with the Canes even after making his five visits.
* According to internet reports, Miami has lost out on defensive end Nick Perry (USC), cornerback T.J. Bryant (USC) and Jamie Harper (Clemson). But all in all, the Canes have to be happy with what they've been able to pull off today. Getting Harris in a few minutes -- as I expect -- will be a great topping to this class. I expect him to be the last player UM picks up today.

-----------------------------------------------------------
OK I'm here at The West on the third floor in the school library. I'll give you the updates as they unfold.

9 a.m. - So far, Brandon Washington, Kendal Thompkins Ben Jones are here. I haven't seen Tommy Streeter yet. Andre Fernandez tells me all he sees are four UM caps on the table in front of the players.
9:05 a.m. - The players are now seated at the table with caps set out in front of them. Coach Billy Rolle is going to address the crowd of family members, students and media before it all begins.
9:07 a.m. - Tommy Streeter has arrived from nearby Turner Tech wearing a suit and tie.
9:10 a.m. - Actually, Kendal Thompkins still has not arrived. Streeter is sitting in the middle between Washington and Jones. And Jones just playfully put a UM cap on his head and told him "stop playing."
9:13 a.m. - Kendal Thompkins has arrived and is now taking a seat by his teammates. He doesn't have any cap on.
9:18 a.m. - We've got a bit of a hold up here. Not sure what they are waiting for. But I'll keep you posted.
9:21 a.m. - Just spoke to a Northwestern assistant and I asked him what the deal with Thompkins and Streeter was. His response: "Man, they ain't going nowhere. They're staying home." We'll still have to wait and see for sure.
9:23 a.m. - Billy Rolle just told me the hold-up is linebacker Quavon Taylor, who is headed to South Florida. Taylor still hasn't arrived.
9:24 a.m. - Athletic director Earl Allick has now started the ceremony with the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem.
9:27 a.m. - Principal Charles Hankerson is speaking. Maybe this is a good sign. There are four UM caps on the table mixed between a bunch of other caps. That's one for each of the guys the Canes want.
9:30 a.m. - Coach Billy Rolle is now at the podium and he's introducing his coaching staff. How about some kids!
9:31 a.m. - Kendal Thompkins has now placed a Nebraska cap on his head.
9:35 a.m. - We're still going through player introductions. Thompkins, Washington, Streeter and Jones will announce in that order.
9:41 a.m. - We're about to hear we're they're going... Ben Jones is going to... UM.
9:42 a.m. - Tommy Streeter is going to ... Miami.
9:43 a.m. - Brandon Washington is going to ... Miami.
9:45 a.m. - Kendal Thompkins is going to ...  Miami. Call it a clean sweep for the Canes!

STREETER'S DECISION: I just spoke to Streeter about why it ultimately was he picked the Canes. Turns out, his visit to UM this past weekend helped a lot. Streeter, who attends Turner Tech and wants to be a Broadcast Journalism major, said the equipment he saw at UM on his visit was more up to date than anything he'd seen on any of his other visits.

THOMPKINS TALKS: Thompkins tells me he was definitely scared down the stretch that UM might be signing too many receivers. He said he apologized to UM coaches for not telling him how he felt and for not warning him he was going to make a trip out to Nebraska instead of UM last weekend. But  in the end, after talking to his pastor, he decided UM was still the best place for him.

Not sure who will get another scholly from UM...

but it won't be Patrick Johnson. He has already signed his LOI, and as posted by more than a few, was bragging about LSU on the radio this A.M.

Mr FloridaCaneInMinneapolis:

The it got lost somewhere along the line with Davis

This did not happen under Davis, Coker was left with a deep well of talent which he never refilled.

hey guys good day for the U! does anyone know where to find the cookie buckanon or tommy streeter videos?

MiamiCanes....youtube, has videos on everybody.

maybe aaron hester????

Mr. IH8UF

Coker, was not left with any QB talent, I was speaking about quarterbacks not any of the talent rich positions Coker did inherit.
After Dorsey, name a quarterback outside of Wright or Brock Berlin?? The writing was on the wall when Berlin came in and was handed the job over Kyle Wright that we were in trouble at that position. If you don't have a field general leading your offense on the field, I don't care who your running backs, defensive backs and defensive lineman and linebackers are.
If you can't sustain an offensive drive and commit turn overs, your defense in on the field way too long and we saw that a lot the last three years.

Well put FloridaCaneInMinneapolis.

ESPN just noted Miami has number one recruiting class.

ESPNU rates UM #1 recruiting class!!

Great to hear, but it means nothing really. Now we go prove it on the field. NC in '09 or '10.

C-A-N-E-S Let's go Canes!!

Thank you Randy and staff.

And who would you fault for that?

When Coker allowed Berlin to transfer to the U, which I agree should have never happened, I believe that Dorsey was a Sophmore and Guillon was reshirt fresman, and the Mr. Coker could not get a QB to sign for the U 3 years in a row, and Shannon got 4 QB's in 1 year. So can you answer me now FloridaCaneInMinneapolis who is to blame for that?

http://espn.go.com/
ESPN's #1 class ...
TAKE A BOW

Doesn't mean anything....real no. we want is 0 in the loss column.

Let go of the past and let's all look forward to the next couple years at the U! Coker & Berlin who?

Thanks Nu-Sens..

I'm 37 years old, grew up in South Florida and watched The U get built when the older guys in my neighborhood decided to stay home and attend The U, Brian and Bennie Blades, Michael Irvin all of those guys us young bucks looked up to in Optimist League growing up and when they went off to High School and then college. When they went their everyone in Lauderdale became Canes fans, so I have been one since I was 14 years old. As a South Floridian its the only sports program I support 110% to this very day and I live and die on Saturdays on every play so it was tough to see them struggle the last couple of years, but when you looked at the program, longterm fans could see what was missing, and I am sure Randy saw what was missing lining his defenses up to practice against the offense
It makes you scratch your head as to how Davis & Coker didn't see that depth at the Quarterback position was critical. Davis was there with Jimmy Johnson and during the mids 80s years where it was Quarterback U. That was my problem with him being hired, he was never offensive minded he was defensive minded coach and our pride and joy was the defense even when we had great years with the talent we had on offense with Dorsey and our Running Backs and Receivers who were an experienced bunch, but when those guys were gone. Coker did not go out and stock up on QBs or really recruit any hard enough to get them to sign. He figured he could plug someone back there Brock Berlin who came from Florida who didnt know what it was to a Quarterback at The U and it would keep the train on the tracks, Brock wasnt a true Cane, he saw an opportunity to play because of the competition level being low. I remember when Jeff George didnt want to come to The U, because he didnt want to compete for the job with Erickson and Torretta and signed with Illinois instead, thats just how competitive it was, and thats why we won. Thats what Shannon is bring back right now. If you are scared to compete, don't enroll at The U..

That mentality with all of the players will put us back on TOP, sooner rather than later...

Hurry Up Spring Football...

Go Canes..

whatever happened to martavious odoms and brandon moore???? anyone out there has an update

Mr. IH8UF

You are still focusing on Coker, I think he was responsible for maybe 5 recruiting classes during his time as coach. I know what he did when he took over the job and who the quarterbacks were and a mess that was.
Davis was head coach before Coker, and can u name the Quarterbacks that were a part of his great recruting classes?? Can you even remember one??
Did Guillon play on down for the University Of Miami?? We were lucky he had Dorsey for as long as we did. If we had a stock pile of talent at the position the next guy in line when Dorsey graduated if Kyle Wright wasnt ready should have been able to step in. Brock Berlin was the first quarterback since I have been a Cane's fan that just walked right into that job from another University and it wasn't earned.

As for who I fault, I fault both of them for not stock piling talent at that position. Hell, we certainly had enough running backs, but if a quarterback can't take a snap without fumbling, what good does it do.

Hopefully the QBs we have coming can handle the quarterback/center exchange.

How do you find Gainesville? You go North till you smell it and West till you step in it. Gayturds down, da "U" up. Go CANES!!!

What happened with Randy on ESPNU? Did I miss it?

A while ago they said they would have him on in a few minutes, hope I didn't miss it.

FloridaCaneInMinneapolis

The heck with Coker and Davis and Berlin, the future looks bright and if we just keep piling on some excellent recruiting classes like today's soon enough we are going to as ourselves, CHOKER WHO?

Whats going on with ESPNU, are they genuflecting in worship of Dis U?

The U owns south florida

IH8HF..

You are 110% percent correct, the future is extremely bright and I am very excited to be a long time Canes fan today, its getting back to the Golden Years and Randy was right to purge some things and get fresh young blood into the program who are used to and expect to win.

Choker who is right? Today is a brand new start to be a Miami Hurricanes.

Go Canes.. It's all the U today baby...

Is Shannon's press conference going to be on TV?

Brandon Moore has committed to Michigan...no word on martavious odoms yet.

ATLCane,

You are one funny son of a b****!!!!!!!!

You are right Canesjunkie, could this be a new era for ESPN just as for the 'Canes? Could it be that ESPN may finally be willing to call off the trashing of Miami? What's next, peace in the Middle East? Did I wake up in bizarro world this morning?

Were going back to the old days were kids from down here are sick and tired of these other states thinking that they have the best football players.. And there not coming just because they think they have a good chance of making the nfl with miami's pro style play like recuirts in the past couple of years.. but because the have the passion in their hearts to win and show the country that the best football players are in south Florida. and with all of RS ties this well be going on for years to come. alot of high school coaches from down here have played with RS and they want to see him succeed..... GO CANES!!!!!!!

Manny, I just wanted to thank you for all the hard work and dedication during the recruiting process. You clearly know your audience. I left South FLA two years ago, and getting updates here in NYC on my hometown team is impossible. I rely heavily on your blogs and articles. I look forward to Spring football.

I second that Jersey Cane. Even some of the guys like Green who were posting stuff, it seems, minute-by-minute to keep me in the loop did a great job.

I told you to keep the Faith! Congrats to Coach Shannon and the entire coaching staff! "It's great to be a Miami Hurricane"! this was a great day! Hey, Jersey Cane congrats on Miami's class from a fellow New Jersey guy! I feel your pain regarding Canes info. I got to abuse Rutgers fans all day at work today, it was great!!!!! I kept telling the Rutgers fans that Coach Shannon had called was offering recruiting classes if Schiano was interested! I asked them how does it feel to be ranked #46 in recruting!
