Live Q&A tonight at 8 p.m.

I know it has been awhile since we've had a live Q&A session. But seeing as how spring football has now completed a week's worth of action and the basketball team is on the verge of wrapping up an NCAA Tournament bid, I figured it would be a good time to share some time answering some questions tonight.

Feel free to start leaving me some here as I write my advance for the UM-Boston College game on Wednesday. When I'm done, I figure around 8'ish, I'll come back on for some live Q&A. For now, enjoy some of the photos I shot from earlier today at practice. Check out the cool sequence I shot of the three quarterbacks taking a snap and then turning and handing the ball off.030408_marve_warmup

FIRST.

THE U. Gtown will smoke the U in the tournament.

Who do you think of the early entries is the most impressive so far? And who do you expect to see as the starting wr's and which freshman do you think will make biggest impact this season?

Hey Manny, you should write IN advance like Mitch Albom. That's how all the big timers do it.

Hey Manny
How are the WR doing? What's been the buzz about AJ?

Manny: You were going to check on what happened to Mabry, Stewart, and Daly. And why is Barney not listed on the Hurricane roster? If Shannon is really holding everyone accountable, including the sports information dept, he needs to tell them to clean up their web site, e.g., take the coaches names out of the player roster, etc.

When is Taylor Cook expected to be on campus and will he be a contender for the QB position this season? As a follow up question, should he not be a contender at QB what are the chances that he either tries a new position (TE or Punter) or redshirts? I personally like his size and athleticism as well as his arm and would like to see what he could do in an open cometition for the QB spot.

Which QB seems to have more command of the offense?

Are committed players, who are not yet enrolled, allowed to view practice? Has anyone joined (e.g. Futch, B. Harris)?

Manny,

I have 2 questions:

1. Big Boss Bailey – His size and strength are unbelievable, and his athleticism (for a guy his size) is unlikely paralleled. I know he’s learning a new position where he has limited HS experience, and he must improve on his technique, but my question is, with Bailey in the rotation, how strong are our DE’s in 2008? Can we expect more overall productivity?

2. Offensively, who can we depend on to come up with the big plays? Who is the stand out? Who is everyone talking about?

You KNOW the fans are hungry this time of year, and you’ve done a great job keeping us fed! GO CANES!!

Yo, Manny, whats good man? Love the audio interviews, keep up the great work. Quick question, Do you see anything the Canes need to get better at? I know you dont get to see practice much, but if you could ask Randy what he thinks the team needs to get better at I would greatly appreciate it. Again, thanks for all the info. you give.

Peace

Manny, are there any new rumors about Devin Ebanks and whether or not he's going to try to get out of his scholarship at IU? What are the chances, if he does, that he will choose UM over Rutgers?

UM has some work left to do before March Madness, but if/when they get to the tournament, what kind of a splash do you think they can make?

Is there any chance Young will mix in some 3-4 packages in the future with the apparent depth at the LB position now?

Manny,
How can I get the latest and greatest about the "U" besides the helard? That doesn't cost $$$$$

Hey Manny, what do you think about our o-line? also, how good of a LT is Jason Fox at this point, better than Eric Winston?

I heard something about UM trying to get a name change from Dolphin stadium...hows that coming along? Also, does the Canes good basketball season help them recruit, or are the usual top teams still picking up everyone?

Manny is it true they are already putting up a gold life size statue of AJ in front of the stadium?

On the same note how do Marve and Jacory's passes compare in person?
thanks

peace

What's up Manny???

How are the WR's doing??? Who's looking the most impressive??

Do you think Bailey Should move to Tackle he is already 293 by next year he'll be 310 lbs.

Manny... Tailgating restrictions

Is there a way to park together like the way we did at the OB... at the Dolphin.

I understand that they direct you to park at select spots. Is that also true with Parking Passes too?

I know, how about getting us some private passes,... just for a couple of us!
Cat

Manny, que pasa? Who have been the standouts that you have seen so far on offense? on defense?

Hey Manny.. I love reading the Blogs and its my first time writing in. I love the job Randy is doing with the guys and i was wondering, is that winning attitude that some of the freshman have come to UM with began to rub off on the whole team? and how much do U think the Defense will improve next year?

Manuel: am I the only one crazy enough to still think Deron Thomas can be a contributor at RB? The guy's got good quickness, attitude, and is experienced. May never see the field, but I think the guy can still help us. Thoughts?

Manny we got skill players and I hope that it's all coming along. My big question is in the trenches.I think we have the pieces to the puzzle on that D-line, What is that O-line looking like. Can the O-line control the line of scrimmage and handle V-tech,Fsu for 2-3 seconds to get the ball off?

Q: Who do you think of the early entries is the most impressive so far? And who do you expect to see as the starting wr's and which freshman do you think will make biggest impact this season? Posted by: mainecane | March 04, 2008 at 06:35 PM

A: Sean Spence is probably impressing coaches the most so far. For him to debut with the first team at strongside linebacker is a sign he's at least ahead of the curb. I think Aldarius Johnson is also doing a real good job at receiver. I'm still undecided as to who I ultimately think nets the starting job at wide out. But I think Johnson has a great shot because he came into camp early. I'd say he, Jermaine McKenzie and Sam Shields are the most talented of the group. But I think you'll see Kayne Farquharson and Leonard Hankerson in the rotation. I'd say those are the top five right now.

Q: Hey Manny, you should write IN advance like Mitch Albom. That's how all the big timers do it. Posted by: Jackie Puppet | March 04, 2008 at 06:36 PM

A: Well, problem is Frank Haith had his press conference at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. Hard to write in advance of an opponent when media availability is so scarce.

Manny, How are the offensive and defensive lines shaping up?... also, I know that marve has a strong arm but is he accurate ??.
is the team responding to him ?..

MANDINGO! Que paso mi hermano? Please fill us in on the following:

1. Please rank by percentage the chances that Spence, AJ and Forston start in 2008.

2. We need to know about Harland Gunn, Coach Stoudtland and the OL progress?

3. Starting safeties?

4. Return specialists?

Dime la verdad o nos vamos a fajar!

Q: Hey Manny? How are the WR doing? What's been the buzz about AJ? Posted by: True Cane | March 04, 2008 at 06:40 PM

A: There is definitely a lot more excitement surrounding the receivers this year. AJ is a big part of that. He's got all the tools -- physical side, mental side and then the ability to make guys miss. I asked Shannon if any of the receivers were making moves to pick up first down and yardage in passing situations -- something he said he sorely missed last season. First name out of his mouth was Aldarius Johnson.

Offense...
What formations are the running mostly... Direct snaps or shotgun.
Have you seen the spread option offense?
Who is catching the most balls??

Q: Manny: You were going to check on what happened to Mabry, Stewart, and Daly. And why is Barney not listed on the Hurricane roster? If Shannon is really holding everyone accountable, including the sports information dept, he needs to tell them to clean up their web site, e.g., take the coaches names out of the player roster, etc. Posted by: Utah Cane | March 04, 2008 at 06:40 PM

A: Utah, I'm not sure where Mabry, Stewart and Daly are except they are no longer at UM. Chris Barney is there. I spoke to him at length the other day about how he's finally woken up out of his slumber. He admitted he spent too much time being lazy and fat. Now, he says, after talking to Vernon Carey he feels motivated to do something and play like Carey did his during his last two seasons at UM. We'll see if Barney finally rises to the challenge.

Q: When is Taylor Cook expected to be on campus and will he be a contender for the QB position this season? As a follow up question, should he not be a contender at QB what are the chances that he either tries a new position (TE or Punter) or redshirts? I personally like his size and athleticism as well as his arm and would like to see what he could do in an open cometition for the QB spot. Posted by: David (Clearwater) | March 04, 2008 at 06:41 PM

A: Cook is supposed to arrive in the fall and I do not expect him to contend for the strarting job until 2009 at the earliest. As for a possible position change, Cook told me two months ago he wanted to play quarterback but would be willing if it didn't work out to move to another position. He is a very good punter and has the body to play tight end. Unless Marve and Jacory Harris struggle, I think that is where he is likely headed.

Q: Which QB seems to have more command of the offense? Posted by: Canesjunkie | March 04, 2008 at 06:46 PM

A: Hard to tell Canesjunkie. But Thursday -- when UM has an open spring practice at Traz -- we might finally have a better idea. Just so you know, the media is only allowed to watch the first 10 minutes of practice. So, we can only go off what we hear. Special guests who have been able to watch the practices have told me Marve seems a little bit ahead of Jacory Harris. But they also say Harris looks very good.

Have you seen pass plays to the TE and who was catching them?

Q: Are committed players, who are not yet enrolled, allowed to view practice? Has anyone joined (e.g. Futch, B. Harris)? Posted by: Canesjunkie | March 04, 2008 at 06:48 PM

A: Yes. I've seen several 2009 kids at practice in the past week. Jordan Futch was at practice Saturday.

Hey Manny,

Everyone is excited about our offense, which after the last couple years is definitely a welcome thing. However, with that I think the defense is being taken for granted, especially the secondary. Do you think DVD, Bruce Johnson, Grant and B. Harris will be able to hold it down on corner or could we maybe be in for a bit of a trouble since it should take sometime for the line to ramp up? (Bailey and Ojomo to get used to playing and the Young DT's to get used to the college game)

Are the CBs done with track now? How have they looked? Thanks for all you do Manny

Q: Big Boss Bailey – His size and strength are unbelievable, and his athleticism (for a guy his size) is unlikely paralleled. I know he’s learning a new position where he has limited HS experience, and he must improve on his technique, but my question is, with Bailey in the rotation, how strong are our DE’s in 2008? Can we expect more overall productivity? Posted by: Jeromy | March 04, 2008 at 06:51 PM

A: The key to production with the ends is simple -- the play of the defensive tackles. Last year, UM was hurting -- literally -- at tackle. That's why it was hard for guys like Calais Campbell and Eric Moncur to have great statistical seasons. I think once Forston emerges, you'll see Miami's pass rush improve at the ends position.

Q: Offensively, who can we depend on to come up with the big plays? Who is the stand out? Who is everyone talking about? Posted by: Jeromy | March 04, 2008 at 06:51 PM
A: Too early right now to know exact names. We'll see more on Thursday during the open practice. But so far, early names creating buzz are Aldarius Johnson, Leonard Hankerson, Jermaine McKenzie.

Q: Yo, Manny, whats good man? Love the audio interviews, keep up the great work. Quick question, Do you see anything the Canes need to get better at? I know you dont get to see practice much, but if you could ask Randy what he thinks the team needs to get better at I would greatly appreciate it. Again, thanks for all the info. you give. Peace Posted by: KillerBeez41 | March 04, 2008 at 07:00 PM

A: I don't need to ask Randy. I know what he'd say -- everything. I think the main areas you want to see improvement are linebacker, defensive tackle, quarterback and receiver.

Hey Manny, whatever happened to hearing about Cook and Davis getting medical redshirts for last year? It was supposed to happen a few days ago.

2. When does the track stuff end and Coop, DVD, McNeal, Bruce, etc. come back?

3. Anything about Pat Hill?

4. How is the DL doing without Vegas, Calais, and McCray? Probably the weakest position next year, unfortunately.

Manny, any word on JJ & Coop?

Do you think that the 2009 draft will be the year that a hurricane finally does not get taken in the first round? Possibly Ponder or Reddick rebound? or maybe Baby-J or Jason fox have a ridiculous progression this year and leave early? Maybe a D-lineman emerges?

Q: Manny, are there any new rumors about Devin Ebanks and whether or not he's going to try to get out of his scholarship at IU? What are the chances, if he does, that he will choose UM over Rutgers? Is there any chance Young will mix in some 3-4 packages in the future with the apparent depth at the LB position now? Posted by: AZCaneDude | March 04, 2008 at 07:02 PM

A: I haven't heard anything new regarding Ebanks other than he will wait until the end of his high school season decide. I think UM's emergence obviously helps the Canes. But Frank Haith has to repair whatever might have been damaged in their relationship after he picked IU. As far as the 3-4 is concerned, I definitely think it is something Miami will experiment with to confuse opponents. But I still expect them to be a 4-3 base defense.

on confidence going into gville week 2. I know the freshman believe they are winners but do you think with all the ? Marks will this team go in shaky or do you feel the quiter attitude is being rooted out. I couldnt bear watching our d quit last year

Hey Manny,

When will we find out who the greyshirts our from this incoming class? And as a result, will this decrease the number of scholarships available in 09? (I think its about 19 right now)

Manny , Do you think the canes have a realistic shot at Kenyan Boyton. Also what's been going on with Sam Shields? After coming off so much hype as a freshman ,he has been kind of quiet as of late.

Thanks Manny I appreciate it.

Ian

Q: Hey Manny, what do you think about our o-line? also, how good of a LT is Jason Fox at this point, better than Eric Winston? Posted by: Jack222 | March 04, 2008 at 07:44 PM

A: I think Fox is very good. In fact, after putting on some weight -- he's up to 305 now -- I think he'll be even better. Is he better than Eric Winston? We'll see how he does this season as leader of this offensive line. Last year, he had Derrick Morse to lead the charge. Now, this is his line. Let's see how he does then.

Q: I heard something about UM trying to get a name change from Dolphin stadium...hows that coming along? Also, does the Canes good basketball season help them recruit, or are the usual top teams still picking up everyone? Posted by: woosh | March 04, 2008 at 07:53 PM

A: The stadium is supposed to be renamed according to the contract UM signed with the Dolphins. I'm not sure when exactly we'll hear what it is.
Obviously, UM's big basketball season is helping them. Without giving me names, Haith has told me Miami is the running for a few big time '09 recruits. I don't think UM is going to beat Duke or Carolina for anybody they really want. But, I think Haith is getting closer everyday to getting the big-name kid he's coveted for awhile.

Q: Manny is it true they are already putting up a gold life size statue of AJ in front of the stadium? On the same note how do Marve and Jacory's passes compare in person? thanks peace Posted by: solarcane | March 04, 2008 at 08:05 PM

A: Actually, I hear the gold life size statue is of 86! As for the arms, I think Jacory has the stronger arm. Marve is the more deadly accurate. See you Solar.

Q: Manny is this the year Chavez Grant sees the starting line up?

Q: Do you think Bailey Should move to Tackle he is already 293 by next year he'll be 310 lbs. Posted by: Kenny Lopez | March 04, 2008 at 08:07 PM

A: I think Bailey will end up playing all over the DL before his career is over. I see him kind of like Bryan Pata -- moving to whatever spot of the line UM needs him to move. But he'll be an end at least in 2008.
