Live Q&A tonight at 8 p.m.

I know it has been awhile since we've had a live Q&A session. But seeing as how spring football has now completed a week's worth of action and the basketball team is on the verge of wrapping up an NCAA Tournament bid, I figured it would be a good time to share some time answering some questions tonight.

Feel free to start leaving me some here as I write my advance for the UM-Boston College game on Wednesday. When I'm done, I figure around 8'ish, I'll come back on for some live Q&A. For now, enjoy some of the photos I shot from earlier today at practice. Check out the cool sequence I shot of the three quarterbacks taking a snap and then turning and handing the ball off.030408_marve_warmup

what are the chances of the other incoming receivers getting on the field? y dime how is the linebacking and d-line looking? arthur brown and others

Do you feel, that the university of Miami hurricanes will be in National Championship contention in 2010? The last time a player from my area played for the canes was when they won chips in o1, Mat Walters DE, 89,91 Bubba Mcdowell S,Hurlie BrownDb,Darryl Spencer wr, next on the clock Ramon Cookie Bucannon!

Q: Manny... Tailgating restrictions... Is there a way to park together like the way we did at the OB... at the Dolphin. I understand that they direct you to park at select spots. Is that also true with Parking Passes too? I know, how about getting us some private passes,... just for a couple of us! Cat Posted by: Cat5 Cane | March 04, 2008 at 08:07 PM

A: I'll see what I can do to hook you up Cat -- actually I have no pull with UM. I know the way things have been handled in the past at Dolphins Stadium parking passes restrict you to certain areas. But that was the case too at the OB.

What's up Manny. I see Tervaris Johnson (my boy) made a big play today. Any chance he pushes for playing time this year?

Manny, Are you as sold on Marve, as Shandel is?

Manny, I see Boynton cancelled his visit to Duke this weekend. You liking Miami's chances?

Q: Manny, que pasa? Who have been the standouts that you have seen so far on offense? on defense? Posted by: CanesgirlNC | March 04, 2008 at 08:08 PM

A: We only get to watch the first 10 minutes of practice, so it is hard to say. But from what we hear from new players... on offense: Hankerson, McKenzie, A. Johnson, Figueroa... defense: Forston, Spence.

Q: Hey Manny.. I love reading the Blogs and its my first time writing in. I love the job Randy is doing with the guys and i was wondering, is that winning attitude that some of the freshman have come to UM with began to rub off on the whole team? and how much do U think the Defense will improve next year? Posted by: Mr. 305 | March 04, 2008 at 08:11 PM

A: I definitely think the attitude the freshman have brought in will rub off. Their level of talent already has in raising the level of intensity in practice. We'll have to see after the spring game how much the defense is.

Do you think that special team play would improve with the guys that we have coming in?

Q: Manuel: am I the only one crazy enough to still think Deron Thomas can be a contributor at RB? The guy's got good quickness, attitude, and is experienced. May never see the field, but I think the guy can still help us. Thoughts? Posted by: AlpharettaCane | March 04, 2008 at 08:12 PM

A: You aren't crazy Alpharetta. You are insane. Just kidding. Thomas can definitely contribute to this team. I wouldn't write him off yet. He could end up being like Jarrett Payton -- someone who is always on the outside looking in until he's needed.

We hear you throw a mean, tennis ball, spiral.

Hey Manny, how can true Um Fans and alumni get involved in being the best fans, I mean we all know there are alot of bandwagers, and pansies that boo, I can we stop that, I look @ Clemson in the death valley, Vtech intro is incrediable, very intimidating, they all have beamer ball, Gators the swamp,Texas AM the 12th man, What about us? We should all be called Category Fives? or go back in to those intimdating days Ruthless Posse with fatigues, What do ya think? What should we do?

Is this where you come to get measured for the life size statue?

Manny...U rock! I guess you heard about my AJ worship? I'll say it here too:

AJ will be the BEST WR to have ever played at UM!

Now tell us about the special team: Pannunzio, return specialists and kickers?

Q: Manny we got skill players and I hope that it's all coming along. My big question is in the trenches.I think we have the pieces to the puzzle on that D-line, What is that O-line looking like. Can the O-line control the line of scrimmage and handle V-tech,Fsu for 2-3 seconds to get the ball off? Posted by: TRU2daU | March 04, 2008 at 08:22 PM

A: I'm actually not that worried about the offensive line. I think Orlando Franklin is a beast. He and Fox will be a solid combo on the left side. Xavier Shannon will do a solid job at center for a season. And everything we hear about Joel Figueroa at right guard is that he's a stud in the making. Reggie Youngblood is going to be solid at right tackle and will rotate plenty with Chris Rutledge. I think if UM keeps injuries to a minimum, the front line will be more than capable of protecting UM's quarterbacks.

Q: Manny, How are the offensive and defensive lines shaping up?... also, I know that marve has a strong arm but is he accurate?? is the team responding to him ?. Posted by: fzbcane | March 04, 2008 at 08:25 PM

A: I just broke down the OL. The one area I'm concerned about on the DL is defensive tackle. How quickly will Forston emerge as the man? He's obviously the most talented guy they have. If he can come along quickly, I think UM's d-line will be fine. What has always impressed me about Marve is his accuracy actually. We'll see if how the team responds to him in the spring games.

Manny mi amigo:
We have heard nothing about Ryan Hill. Is he practicing as a WR? Is there any chance he moves back to CB? I know Bossman says no but that may be coachspeak.

Thanks

Q: MANDINGO! Que paso mi hermano? Please fill us in on the following: 1. Please rank by percentage the chances that Spence, AJ and Forston start in 2008. 2. We need to know about Harland Gunn, Coach Stoudtland and the OL progress? 3. Starting safeties? 4. Return specialists? Dime la verdad o nos vamos a fajar! Posted by: SOUP | March 04, 2008 at 08:25 PM

A: Sopa... 1. Spence, AJ and Forston (100%) at some time during the 2008 season. 2. Gunn is backing up right now at right guard. He's coming along well according to Stoutland. 3. My money is on Lovon Ponder and Randy Phillips in the opener. 4. I'd lay $10 on one of the incoming freshmen to get the job -- Travis Benjamin, Thearon Collier or Kendal Thompkins.

Q: Offense...What formations are the running mostly... Direct snaps or shotgun.
Have you seen the spread option offense?
Who is catching the most balls?? Posted by: Cat5 Cane | March 04, 2008 at 08:29 PM

A: Haven't seen enough of practice to give you a honest breakdown. We'll see in the spring.

OHHHH,... what about our kicker, Mr. Jake Wieclaw... Maybe the second most important position behind QB.

Can he boom them like advertised, What's his longest?

Q: Are the CBs done with track now? How have they looked? Thanks for all you do Manny.. Posted by: Loco | March 04, 2008 at 08:42 PM

A: The track guys were back out at practice today. I'll let you know how they look after Thursday's spring game.

Manny,

Do you think Vaughn Telemaque or Damien Berry has the speed to play corner back?

Manny how has Jake Wieclaw loked?

Q: Hey Manny, 1. whatever happened to hearing about Cook and Davis getting medical redshirts for last year? It was supposed to happen a few days ago. 2. When does the track stuff end and Coop, DVD, McNeal, Bruce, etc. come back? 3. Anything about Pat Hill? 4. How is the DL doing without Vegas, Calais, and McCray? Probably the weakest position next year, unfortunately. Posted by: []__[] | March 04, 2008 at 08:46 PM

A: 1. I'm going to assume they got it because they've remained out at practice all week. I'll ask Randy for sure tomorrow. 2. I saw Cooper at out at practice today and I have to assume that means all the track guys are back. 3. I interviewed Pat Hill on Saturday. His audio is available on our site. I'll have a blog item up on him this week. 4. We'll have to see when the hitting really begins. But coaches say they are excited about the young fellas -- especially Forston.

I know you haven't seen much of practice...but from rumblings, who has been the most impressive RB? And who is getting the 1st team reps?

Q: Manny, any word on JJ & Coop? Posted by: BiltmoreCANE | March 04, 2008 at 08:46 PM

A: JJ has looked good -- better physically from what I saw him last year. Cooper I saw for the first time today. He was working on punt returns. I want to see him Thursday.

Q: Do you think that the 2009 draft will be the year that a hurricane finally does not get taken in the first round? Possibly Ponder or Reddick rebound? or maybe Baby-J or Jason fox have a ridiculous progression this year and leave early? Maybe a D-lineman emerges? Posted by: Miller | March 04, 2008 at 08:48 PM

A: I definitely think 2009 could be the year the streak ends. Of all the guys UM has right now, though, that would be eligible I'd think Jason Fox has the best shot at going in the first round. Ponder would need to have the type of season Brandon Meriweather did a couple years back to get into the first round.

Manny, which seniors if any are stepping up and leading this team?

Manny,

Have you heard anything about the TEs? How is Shields doing and Kayne doing?

Q: on confidence going into gville week 2. I know the freshman believe they are winners but do you think with all the ? Marks will this team go in shaky or do you feel the quiter attitude is being rooted out. I couldnt bear watching our d quit last year Posted by: DMc | March 04, 2008 at 08:51 PM

A: It's going to be hard for UM to beat the Gators in Gainesville in Week 2. But it's still the Gators we're talking about here. Tim Tebow or not, they were pretty bad last year with all that talent. I think the defensive attitude will be different with Bill Young in charge of it and the new crop of freshmen involved.

Still sticking with 7-5?

Q: Hey Manny, when will we find out who the greyshirts our from this incoming class? And as a result, will this decrease the number of scholarships available in 09? (I think its about 19 right now) Posted by: shwarma | March 04, 2008 at 08:53 PM

A: We'll find out about who ends up grayshirting in August after the kids who signed aren't in school. Obviously, anytime you have to defer a kid to the following season it takes away from other schollies. Clint Hurtt told me UM would have around 19 available scholarships in 2009.

Q: Manny , Do you think the canes have a realistic shot at Kenyan Boyton. Also that's been going on with Sam Shields? After coming off so much hype as a freshman ,he has been kind of quiet as of late. Thanks Manny I appreciate it. Posted by: ian | March 04, 2008 at 08:53 PM

A: Hey Ian. I do think UM has a good shot at Boynton -- especially after he reportedly canceled his trip to Duke. Shields has been practicing, not getting himself in trouble. Let's see how he does in the spring games.

8 - 4 Manny? Kudos on all the interview clips. You can almost feel the diffference in the attitude about the boys. they are Shannonized through and through.

Marve's accuracy cannot be understimated... will make the receivers look good and vice versa.

Any news on possible future commits? Is Lamar Miller a cane?

As a follow up question to the Kenny Boyton there is a rumor that he cancelled his visit to Duke this weekend... Have you heard anything about it or put any credence in it

Manny... You seem to know all...What UM sports bars are close to the Stadium, that some of us could meet at before games?

Manny, if you could pick one player who you feel will break out this year, who would it be?

Hey Manny....

I haven't heard too much about Arthur Brown this spring? How is he doing? And is he fitting in well with the Norhtwestern guys?

Manny... Not sure your still on.... Thanks for your efforts and keep it hot.
Good night all.
Cat

Wow, what a cornball.

Manny,

Devin Ewbanks news?
Also, rank the quartebacks as if the season started today, from what you have seen/heard.

Manny, do you think we use a 2 qb system next year, like florida and lsu did ? Im thinking Marve starts, and Harris is the change of pace, maybe even a new offensive package for each? Gracias por todo la informacion

This is more of a philosophical question, hope you don't mind me bringing philosophy into a sports blog:
Why do the Gators suck so much? Is it the location? The fans? The coach? (Urban Liar is not a good name for a coach). Or is it the 417 to 1 student faculty ratio? Whatever it is, they do (suck), and its a national tragedy that none of the major political candidates have pledged to take any action on this.
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

this is a quote from Demtrius Byrd of LSU. it makes me want to throw up!!

Byrd added, "I feel like we're the new Miami. We've got players for days who are going to come and do what they've got to do. They want it. They're ready to work. I'm telling them every day, 'It's time to get serious. This is our time.'"

those people will never be the U

LSU? What exactly makes them similar to Miami in any way? You just won a national championship with 2 losses for God sakes. Lol...yeah, real Miami-like.

That's just like people saying so and so is the new Michael Jordan. There's only one Michael Jordan and there's only one Miami. And neither will ever be replaced. The rest are just wanna-bes.

Uh, Robert, you couldn't be more wrong. Two words: Harold Miner.

Hey Manny I got to hand it to you! Being im a guy from the capital city area. just want to say thanks for your efforts as of keeping insider news posted here from the U. I browse through rival, espnu, and scout.com before i discovered this site and honestly i dont think they compare as of team news. I am grateful for your time and effort here. Keep it up!

Q: Hey Manny what's up. I know it's early but do you think the Canes have a decent chance at making it 7 straight over Florida?

I say Shannon can get it done. I know our defense quit during certain games last year but they will be extra hyped because it's an instate rivalry. I look back to '02 and our defense had some question marks after losing Reed, Rumph, Buchanan, Lewis...all people were talking about was Grossman tearing up UM. but he looked like GARBAGE, Shannon had his inexperienced guys disciplined for that gm (Rolle, Sikes, Taylor, Jennings) and young offensive guys like Winslow and McGahee performed. So I just think the whole experience factor is a tad overrated...We have the athletes and talent is not the issue. I think James and Coop should get 35 combined carries, Marve should be able to get 200 yds 1 td no picks, and the defense lead by Forston, Moncur, Bailey, Arthur Brown, McCarthy, DVD, and Berry will wreck Florida's hopes of ending Miami's dominance over Florida.

there is alot talk about A.johnson and forston, but last i checked Tommy streeter was a gem among that group too.I wonder how him and D.Adderly will fair out as they develop as taller wide outs of the bunch. another guy from booker T. (davon Johnson)
Should standout some point during his career With his game changing speed. But hey the future will tell as they go through the college ball.
