Back from Vacation

I don't know about you, but I was completely blown away last night watching Texas' Josh Hamilton belt 28 home runs in the first round of the All-Star Game home run derby. It's probably one of the most amazing athletic feats I've seen in sports -- right up there with those amazing rounds Tiger Woods puts together or those nights when Michael Jordan just seemed unstoppable. It was total domination not for a brief moment or a run, but for an extended period of time. It's only a shame Hamilton didn't finish the job and win the crown (the New England Patriots come to mind).

Our Miami Hurricanes -- the football Canes you care most about -- are nowhere near that kind of excellence yet. They're about as far off as Hamilton's eye-opening 519-foot blast was from home Ryan_braun plate when it landed in center field. As I make my return from vacation this week, the only reason I bring up Hamilton is because one of the guys he overshadowed last night was former Canes standout Ryan Braun (one of the few Canes currently in action during this college offseason break). As impressive as Hamilton was last night, you have to throw Braun (the 2007 NL Rookie of The Year) in the argument when it comes to the best young players in baseball today. Braun finished tied for third in last night's contest with 14 homers and he's currently hitting .286 with 23 homers and 66 RBI on the season and will start for the NL tonight in left field. And the bottomline is he's not getting enough love! So, here's to you Brauny, the first official winner of the new Eye On The U Bad-Ass Award, which will be given out once weekly this coming year here at Eye On The U. Nominees of course are always welcome for Canes past and present.

--> A DATE WITH THE GOLDEN DOMERS? If there was a runner-up award, new Hurricanes athletic director Kirby Hocutt would be the recipient. After hearing the complaints last week from Canes fans angry about possibly not having The U at midfield, Miami's new, young athletic director stepped up to the challenge and gave Canes fans what they wanted. Now, as our Barry Jackson reports, Hocutt is interested in approaching Notre Dame about scheduling a game in the future once it hires an athletic director. It's probably not going to happen, but if Hocutt can some how pull that one off Canes fans are at least in the early stages going to love this guy. I don't know about you, but I grew up loving every second watching the Canes destroy the Irish. And that would be the No. 1 game on my wish list... here's one for all you that remember those old Convicts vs. Cathlolic days.

--> TWO FORMER CANES IN ARENABOWL CHAMPIONSHIP: Baseball isn't the only sport going on during these boring sports months of summer. For those of you in need of a football fix and Canes action, two former Canes from the 2001 national championship team will meet this weekend in ArenaBowl XXII Sunday at 3 p.m. Receiver/linebacker Jason Geathers will represent the defending champion San Jose Sabercats and lineman Martin Bibla will start for the Philadelphia Soul. Geathers had two TD catches, a touchdown run and returned an INT for a score in last weekend's playoff game.

--> ANOTHER DEQUAN FAN: University of Miami coach Frank Haith told reporters on numerous occassions last year he's predicting big things for incoming 6-6 freshman swingman DeQuan Jones. Dequan_jones After catching up with Julian Gamble last week for a story I'm doing on his trip with Athletes in Action to Africa, all reports say Jones has been tearing it up against his new teammates during the team's offseason pickup games twice a week. Gamble told me Jones knows how to get to the basket and score and was a bit surprised by how advanced Jones was. My question is if Jones is as good as everyone says he is, who goes to the bench for UM -- Lance Hurdle or James Dews? It's not a big deal and it's actually a nice problem to have... also according to Gamble, redshirt sophomore Adrian Thomas is showing great signs after coming back from his second season-ending injury in a row. He said Thomas has shown better shooting touch than he's ever seen from him and demonstrating consistency hitting three-pointers.... Jack McClinton, meanwhile, shined yet again at another basketball camp -- this time LeBron James' camp in Ohio. The All-ACC First Team selection was supposedly praised so much by All-Star Chris Paul earlier this summer at Paul's camp that Paul insisted on calling Haith afterward to tell him how impressed he was with McClinton's work ethic.

--> RECRUITING UPDATE: Among the many phone calls I fielded during my "vacation" last week was one from one of my buddies over at The U, who breathlessly told me to expect the news that the Antwan_lowery Canes had landed a commitment from Columbus defensive tackle Antwan Lowery (ranked fourth by the Herald among Dade recruits). The call never came and when I tried to reach Lowery later that night, his high school coach told me Lowery was going to wait until August 1st to decide between either UM or Rutgers. Lowery's older brother Antonio is a linebacker at Rutgers. But after interviewing Lowery last month, I got the sense he's going to be a Cane in the end. Miami, desperate for talented linemen (on offense or defense), could definitely use him... if Lowery commits, he'll likely be one of the few local players from Dade or Broward who end up at UM this year. Miami is no longer interested in Dade's No. 1 recruit, running back Lamar Miller and has only one Dade or Broward commitment in American defensive end Olivier Vernon (who is visiting other schools). The only other players who say UM is genuinely recruiting them are Pace defensive back Kayvon Webster, Plantation cornerback Brandon McGee and American Heritage offensive lineman Jared Wheeler. McGee has told our reporters he will announce August 11th and has the Canes in his top five.

* Alright, that's enough from me for now. I'll be back periodically this week as we in the media wait for football access. Coach Randy Shannon will speak this Thursday morning at the Florida Sports Writers Association meetings in Tampa. I'm still not sure if The Herald will be sending me or not, but Jeff Shain will be there to report for us.

firsttttttt!! thatd be great getting lowery on board

Welcome back Manny

Any calls on recruits in basketball???? Seeing a lot of names saying they are interested bit no commits What do you hear.

Thanks

manny, wut do u think about miami not taking arguably, the best back in the nation? Sure he has grade issues (still 1 year left to bring them up) and he has shoulder issues, but do u think miami should have played this differently? Say still recruit him and see what he does his senior season as opposed to telling the kid flat out, "no"?

We need lots of linemen in the next recruiting class. This should be the main area of focus for Randy Shannon and crew.

Welcome back Manny!

Are we recruiting Tevin McCaskill?

I wouldn't say we are desperate for linemen. We are thin at DE and T but not desperate.

Anyways thanks for the update Manny.

I know the focus for this year's recruiting is going to be DB's and OL's, but I still do not understanding the two great running backs in South Florida, particularly Lamar Miller. I know we have two running back commits, and one of them is the best in the country, but if you have a talent like Miller you just cannot let him go somewhere else. Plus, I have always thought South Florida players are better then the great recruits from around the nation, and neither Brown nor James is a South Florida kid. I just don't get it. Manny...is Miller too small? Too similar to players we already have? Are we just not interested in the effort it would take to land him with Brown already secured? What is it?

Also, though I only casually follow recruiting, I expected a blitz on DB's and OL's this year, much like the linebacker and receiver barrage we got this past year. I'm not seeing long lists for either. Is that just because it is early in the recruiting season? I hope so.

Glad you're back Manny - hope the vacay was restful....

I wonder how the defense will be different under that new coach who came from Kansas. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with the talent he'll have at Miami, which is more than what he ever had at Kansas, and they had a good D.

Q: Any calls on recruits in basketball???? Seeing a lot of names saying they are interested bit no commits What do you hear. Posted by: Hurricane Moe | July 15, 2008 at 05:30 AM

A: Haven't heard anything of late Moe other than Haith and company are working the recruiting trail hard. I would think Haith might take a chance on one of the kids playing at this weekend's Breakdown Hoops Festival here in Miami. We might find some news out from there.

Any word on Allen Bailey's health Manny? Is it possible that he will be ready for Sept 6th in the swamp?

Manny...good to see you back from vaca! Hope U enjoyed your time off.

I know football is around the corner, but when U get a chance can U do a story on Dwayne Collins from the UM basketball team? There are several people who want to know if he has stepped up his conditioning and is ready to be BIG time player this year.

True, he's alledgedly on vacation. Still no excuse for that. You can write a several blogs well in advance and schedule them to post automatically ANY day, ANY time. So there is no excuse for not posting new blogs every few days AT LEAST.

No excuse for not posting new content, NONE!

Shandel...U should know that I was refering to Manny NOT to you when I wrote that.

Posted by: 86Cane | July 06, 2008 at 12:12 PM

86,
Whether it's meant for me or Manny, it's still unfair for you to criticize. We deserve every minute of our vacations. We're at every game (home and away), every practice(I awake at 6 a.m. every day during training camp to get to Coral Gables on time). And it's not like the UM coaches or players are always happy to see us. ... It's not always fun, yet we show up every day. And we deserve a break. Sorry for the Roger Murdoch moment, but I felt it had to be said.

Posted by: Shandel_Richardson | July 06, 2008 at 12:30 PM

BITCHSLAP

We need corners too. No reason why we shouldn't be able to get some of the best CB's out there.

Awesome. Thanks for the update Manny. Was beginning to get real boring around here.

In other news... Green vs. 86 round 573.
Ugh...boring. No one cares, just take it outside already. Beat each other up to a bloody pulp I dont' care, just leave it at the front door already.

Chicagocane, I feel U. I felt the same way about the U not pursing Lamar and Jamal, but I have to admit after reading some recruiting sites about there grades it became clear that the U would not spend time trying to qualify these guys. If you look at Craig Cooper, he knew he did not have the grades so he accepted that he was going to prep school. I'm sure he told the U that he didn't mind that route as long as they were interested in offering him. Lamar has made it clear that he wants to play immediately for a school. He still has an offer if he really wanted to go to the U, he would understand that the coaches are not going to pursue him until he commits and let them know that he might not be coming in with this class. Both of these guys will go to a school with a lower admission acceptance (LSU, WV, OSU,) all these losers have been taking recruits from the U since we raised are admission standards. Why do you think South Florida is having sucess (Lower admission standards). I'm sure the U would love both these guys but as soon as Coach Shannon found out about there grades he decided it's time to move on.....

The wait for Notre Dame to hire a new athletic director looks as if it possibly could be over as ESPN ran across the screen that they were to hire some attorney to fill the void so maybe Kirby can get this guy to see that we as fans want to see the best rivalry of the late 80's again that is if Notre Dame isn't afraid to play someone other than the big ten or service academies. Both Schools would benefit tremendously exposure wise now and into the future. I remember that night the canes destroyed Zorich, Rocket and Rice and sent Notre Dame and Holtz packing back to South Bend, the Orange Bowl was just crunk that night. Maybe Kirby can get it done.
Hey Manny I heard the canes were getting all Black uniforms as an alternate this year. Is there anything to it and are the canes going to change back to the white cleats with their uniforms this year and get rid of those dull, sloppy, slow looking black ones?

In other news... Green vs. 86 round 573.
Ugh...boring. No one cares

-- malcolm x

I hear U both Chicagocane & Allcane. All we heard when coach Shannon became head coach was that the U was going after the top local talent in south Florida, so why all of a sudden we're not recruiting the top talent in south Florida like: Eugene Smith, Lamar Miller, & Ricardo Dixon? I don't care if we have 4 young quarterbacks in regards to Eugene Smith (3 freshman and 1 redshirt freshman). So what if Lamar Miller has bad grades?? Does that mean we just turn our backs on him instead of helping him get into college (preferably the U)!

Not following you Green. I always say LOL so I'm not completely sure why you chose to pick that up. And when I said "that was fun" I was making fun of you for your capitalized one liners after you copy paste statements.

Overall not sure who you were referring to with that malcom x quote. Me because I said your conflict with 86 has gotten boring, predictable, and a complete distraction to this blog....or yourself. In that case we're back again to the self-righteous holier than thou attitude you exhibit. ::puke::

In all seriousness Green, I use to come here (besides for reading the blog) to see your comments, because you use to have like 100 links leading people to different, entertaining, and engaging news on the Canes. For the past few months you've gone from useful and entertaining, to just plain bitter and annoying. Bah, I don't care, just for the love of God stop with the personal attacks and your personal vendetta against 86 and get back to what was fun about this blog.

welcome back Manny. Thanks for the info. Really hoping Jones can provide some off the dribble penetration n buckets for this team next year.

Once again Green, you do NOT speak for me or for any other hurricane fan on this blog. And unless you want to admit that you are a higher-up in the Miami Herald world, you do not speak for them either. Take your delusions of grandeur outside please.

And for the last time Green, I don't think what I'm asking you is all that impossible. Instead of making this blog a you v. me, you v. 86, you v. soup, etc. get it back on track to the Canes.

And stop cherry picking my statements and putting them out of context....sheesh.

Common Green. Back to the "semi" vitriol. You have quick wit and insightful retorts...but when you start the over the top stuff, you loose lots of readers...

OUT

Hello, we need an update on Allen Bailey????????
I am assuming Courtney Harris is out for the year with the achilles??????
Two of our top defensive ends out for the F.U. Gaturds. I want Teesteroidbow on his ass all evening, we can't do it without at least one of these guys healthy.

"I want Teesteroidbow on his ass all evening" - real canesrule

Don't worry he will be for the majority of the game (on the bench) as Newton/Brantley will be in for clean-up duty.

0-35 at the half
3-49 final

I want to see little timmy on a ventilator.

manny... thanks.
Keep it hot and bring it.

Any body notice the betting odds and the predictions by the experts, dont match. Most betting lines are showing us ranked 3rd to 4th in winning the ACC out of 12 teams. It doesn't compute, if predictions by some, are at 7/5 season...
Assuming VT is the team to beat in the Coastal... To win the ACC, we would be at 10/2 or 9/3 with a breaking tie win over VT during regular season and then beat Clemson, FSU or Wake or who ever in the championship game.

Cat
Cat

Correction Cat5. Most experts have UM finishing third in the COASTAL DIVSION of the ACC...NOT the ACC. Great prognostication on the 10/2 or 9/3 finish. Stop drinking that rancid Kool-Aid (purple drank) that Canesrule (canesfool) has been brewing up. UM has a BUNCH of work to do. The list of questions they must answer is longer that it has been in the history of the program. Miami should win between 4 to 8 games. Four is the worst case scenario. 8 would be a stellar improvement. UM fielded horrendously bad special teams last year. A huge improvement on that unit would make them average. The offense was completely anemic. But that's ALL fixed now? C'mon man, take off your U goggles. She aint that pretty. The defense is loaded with questions too. I don't know where Miami is planning on getting a pass rush from. Great young kids Shannon has gotten but they won't be paying dividends like you are imagining they will in 08. Be patient, let your team grow. Kick ass in 09. Please spare us the ACC title game nonsense you are drunk on. She aint that pretty.

With the betting odds placing us high ( 3 or 4 place) to win the ACC... can only mean the they must be throwing out the predicted expert lines and figuring we are coming back as a dark horse.

Just reporting what I read and disecting the difference

Miami Hurricanes 2008 College Football Betting Preview

http://point-spreads.com/college-football/071308-miami-hurricanes-2008-college-football-betting-preview.html

If you’re a college football fanatic you might be asking the question; what happened to the Canes' of Miami who had won so many championships and instilled fear into future opponents just by the mere mention of their name? Well, you shouldn’t have to wait long because in 2008 pundits expect to see "The U" back on the road to recovery thanks to some great recruiting by second year head coach Randy Shannon. Shannon is re-stocking the roster with good players of quality character and talent just as Butch Davis did a decade earlier. Regardless of the talent, the team has suffered many losses in numbers from 2007 and might not be ready to contend for any championships just yet but the bowl prospects will be much better.

Oddsmakers at online sportsbook Bodog (Bodoglife.com) expect Miami to be very competitive in 2008 having them installed at 5/2 odds to win the ACC Coastal Division second best to division favorite Virginia Tech at 11/10. If the Canes’ can get past the rival Hokies and make it to the ACC championship game, they are installed at 7/2 odds to win the conference. If Miami wins the conference championship they are installed at very respectable 35/1 odds to win the BCS National Championship.

College Football: Miami Hurricanes 2008 ACC Preview
Written by Tony Corleone Sports Picks Breeders Cup Bets NFL Future Betting NFL Predictions Free WSOP Poker Qualifier College Football Picks Bet on MLB

Thursday, 03 July 2008
Last season the Miami Hurricanes failed to make a college football bowl game. First year coach, Randy Shannon was forgiven by fans, but it better not happen again this season. There is a lot of work to be done for the Hurricanes this year, as they only return 4 starters on offense and 4 on defense. The bright side is that recruiting has been excellent and Miami will look to have a great season in the college football ACC division. Currently college football oddsmakers at SportBetting.com have the Miami Hurricanes at +350 odds to win the 2008 ACC this year.

The big strength for the Hurricanes this season is all the fresh talent that they went out and got. Miami is said to be the top 5 teams in the college football recruiting class. Many of the freshmen had plenty of time to adjust to the team and they will look to make big impacts this upcoming year. Usually depending on freshman is not a good idea, but other players will return to anchor the team. The Hurricanes will return linebackers Sean Spence and Arthur Brown, as well as defensive tackle Marcus Forston. Miami will also rely on a couple of quality running backs to carry the team in Graig Cooper and Javarris James. They produced most of the Miami offense last year and will look to be even more productive this season. Right now the Miami Hurricanes are listed at 35:1 odds at SportsBetting.com to win the BCS National Championship.

The rest of the Miami offense did rather poorly and will need to replace several players. Freshman quarterback Robert Marve has looked very impressive, but is battling with Jacory Harris for the job. Either way it may be a problem as both QB’s are very inexperienced. The loss of wide receiver Darnall Jenkins and Lance Leggett will not help either. Miami was ranked last in the conference in 2007 is passing offense, which has been a big problem for them. It is going to be interesting to see how the Miami Hurricanes will adjust this year, but I expect them to surprise a lot of teams.

I under stand your conserative nature and wanting to be politicly correct in predicting 2008... But give me the Kool Aid and a shot of Tequila... Let's party boyz!

"If the Canes’ can get past the rival Hokies and make it to the ACC championship game, they are installed at 7/2 odds to win the conference." -- That is a sucker bet that vegas throws out there for overzealous fans of ALL teams to bite on. Pure profit for vegas. It by NO MEANS suggests that they will actually win the coastal. Some books are also offering miami at seven wins for the over/under. That's also a sucker bet. If you take the over(teams with winning pasts have fans that will bite on the over all dayand the books KNOW this)and don't get eight wins, you lose. BAD bet.

But go ahead and reserve your ACC championship game tix. Good luck.

Your point is taken... Thanks for the response...

Cat

Continuing betting...
I understand your point but it isn't logical... meaning if they were out to attract more money (bets) out of Miami (A small school) then why wouldn't they raise the odds and why do they have the others (Larger Schools) below us at higher odds, like FSU, WAKE, NC to win ACC... unless they are afraid that we are a dark horse and might pull it off....
