Brandon McGee picks Canes (updated)

I wasn't out at Greentree Practice field this morning. I was at Plantation High where the University of Miami won the sweepstakes for one of the Top 10 cornerbacks in the country, Colonels captain Brandon McGee.

Consider it the biggest victory for the Canes since they landed running back Bryce Brown. McGee is Dscf1820Broward's No. 2 recruit, behind Miramar quarterback Eugene Smith. He told a crowd of about 50 people moments ago he wants to be a Cane. I was busy filming it all for our website and will have an interview with Brandon I'll post later today.

> I finally got a chance to finish editing that video of McGee tonight. It's now available on our video player on our UM page. Also available is about a six minute audio interview with McGee on our high school podcast, The Countdown. If you just want to listen to McGee, skip ahead to about 15 and a half minutes ahead (60-65 percent into it). In our live podcast, we also spoke to Charles Fishbein of Elite Scouting Services who gave us his thoughts on the announcement.

> One thing I came away with from spending the morning at Plantation was how good a kid McGee seemed to be. He's very polite, well-mannered and someone who really loves his family. He told us that camraderie was the reason he chose the Canes and said he really did drop the Canes at one point before his father convinced him to put them back in the running. McGee told us it was very important to play in front of his grandparents. He got teary eyed when talking about his mother, who passed when he was 13. Either way, Miami seems to be getting not only a great player, but a tremendous young man.

Here is the only clip I was able to find of him on YouTube.

P.S. - If you are a high school football fan, you've got a treat coming. Over the next two weeks on our podcast, I'll take a look at every team and every district in South Florida with High School writers Andre C. Fernandez and Bob Emanuel and recruiting writer Larry Blustein. For the complete schedule, check out the high school blog.

Can you feel this Hurricane gaining strength!!!! Something special is happening in the Gables.

Great job reporting Manny and welcome to Brandon McGee! Fantastic news.

Manny - I heard Jamaal Berry and Lamar Miller have been at practices recently, and one of them attended the scrimmage. Does this mean that they are still being recruited by the U? I heard it was only 2 running backs we were after, and these two were the odd men out because they didn't commit early enough.

This was a great pickup for the Canes. Its all about The U!

Great news! Thanks manny

Thanks Green, That's not a bad drive at all! Can't wait to see the Canes on the 28th! I look forward to seeing both Marve and Harris perform! It should be intersting to see all of the receivers in action! Looking forward to James and Coop! Can't wait to see monster blocks from Hill in the backfield! GO Canes!!!!!!

Manny,

I think you are talented writer, actually you must be, you were educated by the school across town.

you mean that tier-4 commuter school located in an underprivileged flood zone ...
whose students, faculty & alumni unabashedly root for U ...

LAST RESORT

If we gonna keep it real here, let's get serious about expectations. You've said it before, .500 is the goal for this team.

U play to win ...

AIM HIGH

Miami Dade College Cane Alum (LOL - that's about 90% your fan base)

Posted by: scUMsanitation | August 11, 2008 at 10:13 AM

au contraire ...
U occuppy South Florida's hearts and minds ...

CHOKEHOLD

McGee, glad to have U on board! We need DB's that can come in and play next year, and from what I'm reading your the guy that can do that.

Congrats, Brandon! Cane Nation is happy your one of us now!

That's Randy & This Coaching Staff Throwing The Net Over South Florida AGAINNNNNNN It's A U Thing 4 Sure

Tell them green.

GREEN = TRUTH

I'm glad to see that recruits are linking today's coaching staff and players with the very recent past success of NFL UM draftees and concluding Univ of Miami is the place to be for the next 3-5 years to get a great NFL prep education and a great university education!!!!

It is possible.... It is happening!!!!

Go Canes

welcome Brandon- U are now part of something big that is about to explode all over college football!

"something wicked this way comes!"

Randy is growing into his job and it takes time, but the kids see the dedication and the sincerity Coach Shannon exemplifies and they know he will be there and doesn't want to do anything but be the Coach at the University Of Miami, like the Ole Canes said, its about time we have a REAL HURRICANE running the program. He knows what it took to build the program in the 80s with Jimmy and he knows what was lost these last five years or so and most importantly he knows how to get it back. That starts with clamping down on the state in the great state of Florida, and keeping the kids in house. Bowden's even said, Shannon has made recruiting harder in South Florida. And the talent that is commmitting now is proof of that effort...

Go CANES...

WOW SOMEONE GIVE RANDY HIS PROPS! SIMPLY AMAZING !!!

ITS GOING TO TAKE TIME , BUT SOONER THAN WE KNOW IT, WE GONNA BE BACK ON TOP AGAIN, 2 CHIPS MAYBE IN 6 YRS?

Shannon can recruit but can he win games? Also, how many players this year will qualify. go gators. Sept 6 should be a good comedy show. Buy your tickets now.

To Harvindaman,

It has to start somewhere with a coach in his second year.. Urban Meyer was in Utah with D II talent and came to Florida where he got Zooks recruits and a ready made team that just needed to be tweaked.

We will see if he can consistently win as the years go by.. Recent series I still believe is UM 2 - Florida ZERO.

What happened to Florida against Michigan they got punched in the mouth and the last game they played was an L???

I remember when Florida was the laughing stock to Miami and FSU, were you a fan then or just a bandwagon jumper??

How many players are running to Gainsville right now?? Last I checked where are Gators in the NFL, I see McGehee, Portis, Shockey, Beason, Phillips, Gore, Moss, Moss, Johnson, Winslow, Lewis, Wilfork, Olson, Hester, damn the list just goes on. Where are the Gators??

Go be a hater elsewhere.

we coming back fast baby

where is the vid?

great work as always Manny

Rivals is the most overrated website on the Internet. Lamespace is a close #2. Don't ever read into the rankings or "stars" that they give players. It might be good for gathering info on kids and keeping up with who they choose, but that's it. The only thing that matters is how the kid fits in at a college, position depth, and the ability to accept coaching. Remember, they had BC QB Matt Ryan ranked as a 2 star and Kyle Wright was a 5 star. Here's an example of the "Rivals Illusion":

DT Luther Robinson(6'3"280) is a "4" star and ranked #40 DT in the nation.3

DT Curtis Porter(6'2"334) is ranked the #17 DT in the nation but is only a "3" star!?!?

When it comes down to it, we will consider both as 5 star because we need D-Line help so bad and both will be great guys to plug in their next year.

FloridaCane,
The NFL has numerous gators- learn the rosters. Oh and I am glad you are talking about past Canes, because the current Canes aren't very good. Yes Michigan beat them, but hey we made a bowl game- pathetic not to even qualify for a bowl game. I think Meyer is a bit of a better gameday coach then Shannon, and even most Cane fans would admit that. He should stick to being a defensive coordinator- not sure he is head coach material. go gators. what will the excuses be after the sept 6 blowout?- still in the rebuilding mode?

great to get a local kid. now maybe 35,000 instead of 30,000 will show up for the games.

Harvin
I agree with you that based on the results from last year that Cryer is a better coach than Shannon. As for sept 6th "enjoy it" it will be the last time you beat us. Remember who's your Dadday?

Da U is your Daddy

Yes you sound intelligent- typical miami thug image which is well deserved. Oh so now you are already conceding the sept 6 game. how many years has it been since the canes had a decent team? the team of the 90's certainly hasn't done much since then, other than recruiting thugs that can't play football. Brandon hopefully you will reconsider- do you want to play for a program that doesn't make bowl games and doesn't have the close family that the gator team now demonstrates. Do you want to play on national tv in front of 90,000 plus or in front of 30,000 fans booing the cane players? you have until february to make the choice major wright and more south floridians have done the last few years.

This link tells the story of my fave Hurricanes football player ever. His name is Rusty Medearis...a great CANE!! This is what a real Hurricane is all about.

NO BRANDON, DON'T LISTEN TO HARVINDAMAN,OR CANESRULE, OR WHICH EVER ONE OF HIS MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES THAT HE SUMMONED UP TODAY. IF YOU WANT ADVICE, GO SEEK MARCUS FORSTON'S COUNSEL. HE CAN TELL YOU BEST ON HOW TO DEAL WITH "SNAKES" IN LIZARD GEAR. YES BRANDON, BEWARE OF THE "SNAKE-EYES", MANNY'LL TELL YOU ABOUT EM' TOO. THEY'LL COME TELL YOU NOOOOO, YOU SHOULD'NT GO TO THAT PLACE, BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN TO YOU. BUT BEWARE BRANDON, IT'S ALL A PLOY, AND IF YOU REPEAT THESE WORDS, THEN EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT...YOU READY: "IF I CAN STAY CLEAR OF TROUBLE IN THE PORK -N- BEANS, THEN HOW THE HELL I'MA GET IN TROUBLE IN CORAL GABLES". THOSE WORDS ARE SANCTIFIED, KNOW THEM BEFORE YOU KNOW YOUR PLAY-BOOK AND EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT BRANDON, EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT BUDDY.

HarvinDaMan,

Uh...what are you doing on here? Do you not have a life or did mommy just let you play for a little while?! Don't talk about the past because the past was yesterday and our past much better than yours. Even though we are a little private school with most graduates that are from out of state and your graduates are within driving distance of school. Go talk your team up on the Gator Blog. Oh, one more thing before you continue talking...just zip it up a bit & PROVE IT ON THE FIELD!!!!!!!!!!!

the newer canes aren;t good? you will hear kenny philips' name this year. the next he may just be in the pro bowl. the canes facility should be re-named to nfl training camp. the canes are going to break tebow in the second game of the season and cripple the gators chances of doing anything this year. the U and the swagger is back baby!

HarvinDaMan

we recruit thugs??

when was the last time a MIAMI HURRICANE was arrested?

Last time i checked UF lead the NCAA in arrest last year. talk about THUGS

ZIP IT BUDDY

Are you freaking serious? Please, compare the Hurricane players in the NFL to the Gators in the NFL...please do this. The Hurricanes not only put players in the NFL in abundance, they put STARS in the NFL. Players that are dominant and the best at their positions. Not marginal scrubs, like the Gators. What a typical, idiotic Gator fan. Knows nothing about sports and thinks his team is some powerhouse program or something. LOL. Gators are hilarious.

Exactly right, Orange. Another ignorant and stupid comment. The guy is talking about thugs, yet a Gator is arrested like every week. He knows NOTHING about sports. He just sits there, watches ESPN, and buys into the whatever they hype up. I'm sure he thinks Tim Tebow is an NFL quarterback, as well. Idiot.

Avery Atkins made a great choice!!

All these cane-envying gators thought they would get Mcgee. They know they sure need him because they only have slow midgets in their secondary. Cry us a river you scum-bags!

when was the last time UM won a National Championship? Yep. Moody and Harvin would have some good laughs if they read this garbage.

Brandon,
Don't you at least want to play in a BOWL GAME? A BCS Bowl would be great wouldn't it. When is the last time UM went to a BCS bowl? Oh and which bowl game did they go to last year? Brandon, don't rush into a quick decision and don't be influenced by some of the locals. When the mighty gators beat UM by 40 or 50 in the swamp, I am sure you will have second thoughts. Who wants to play their home games in front of 30,000 people??

manny,
will this recruit qualify? What is the latest on all the recruits from last year who can't get into UM? Sure boosted the UM recruiting class rankings. Shannon is doing what Bowden used to do. SIGN AND PLACE. Who knows if this four star recruit will even qualify. Hardly a Harvin or Moody type of signee.

Wow 2 championship in over 50 + years. That very impressive. Let me tell you.

Actually why don't you look at how many gators didnt not qualify. Miami only had 4 that didnt.

Just in case you didnt know. Miami student athletes standards or higher the the NCAA and Florida you moron.

Ok idiot, first of all you are the largest school in the southeast. You have 52,000+ going to your school per year. Which means you have a lot of alumni. Thats why there alot of you ignorant morons around, that why you have a lot people at your games. We are a private school, which is really expensive to goto, which does not have a lot of students, which leads to a small alumni base.

Oh btw, what is there to do on a saturday in gainsville beside where jorts and goto a gator game?? NOTHING!

Brandon, Do you want to play for multiple coaches at UM? Sure there is playing time available. But RS is headed for the middle of the ACC coastal division and has a good chance of being GONE. Take a look at how UM's last two coaching hires have gone. Coker? Please ! Shannon. Please. RS has shown very little in the way of coaching. Actually he's shown ineptness on the sideline many times. Dude, he LOST CONTROL of his team last year. UM has so many questions to answer that it will be years before this mess of program gets sorted out. No top tier coach will give UM a second glance as they pay scraps. So where does that leave UM on its NEXT coach? Don't kid yourself into thinking RS is leading UM anywhere. The entire local media is already prepared to throw this guy to the wolves. Just watch as 08 unfolds in CG and see what a mess they have down there. Good luck .

Ok idiot once again...How many coaches has UF had over the last 10 years?? 3!

Now how many coaches has miami had? 3!

What has Urban Cryer proved? Ok he went 9-3 his first year. Won a national championship with zook player. Then lost 4 games. Cant be a tiger. That really impressive.

Lets take a look at your last 2 coaches where hired. Hmm Zook, and Meyer. What so good about that?

Talking about LOSING CONTROL of a team. Does meyer even have control of his team?
His players get in trouble and get arrested weekly. His players fight in practice. That is some really good control he has there.

Exaclty just watch how 08 unfolds. Get back to me in January!

Here is a little trivia question for all of you out there.

Who has won the last five times Florida and Miami have played each other?

ATLCANE - actually it is that last 6 times they palyed each other

What is the MIAMI HURRICANES?

Now, what is the margin of victory of the gators in those 5 games?

14.6 is the margin of victory.

The Games werent even close

I know it was a rhetorical question but that's okay lol I was looking for a florida fan to answer that question.

I love this video
