Depth chart, QB decision expected Sunday

Canes coach Randy Shannon said he plans to release a depth chart Sunday and that likely will include announcing his starter at quarterback.

Randy_shannon
"We'll probably have a depth chart ready Sunday," Shannon said. "You'll find out whose what. I'll give you an update Monday on whose out, who won't be playing."

Everyone around here is banking on Marve being named the starter. Shannon also said Marve, Jacory Harris and Cannon Smith are still receiving first team reps. I find that hard to believe, though, considering the team has already begun preparation for Charleston Southern.

> One guy that won't be playing this season is freshman receiver Tommy Streeter, whom Shannon said had surgery and will miss the season. Shannon didn't say what the injury was, but said "it wasn't knee surgery."

Tommy_streeter
"He won't be playing this season, injuries happen," Shannon said. "You feel bad for Tommy. We'll rehab him and get him ready for next season."

It's not surprising. Streeter hasn't practiced in more than a week. To be honest, it's not really that big a loss for UM, which obviously has seen Laron Byrd and Aldarius Johnson (it's other two big incoming freshmen) play well this fall.

> Freshman linebacker Brandon Marti has finally gotten into school. Shannon said he still isn't practicing because he has to go through orientation. Marti is a guy I'm expecting could be redshirted with the amount of depth the team has at linebacker.

> There is still no news on defensive ends Eric Moncur or Allen Bailey. Shannon said he still hasn't spoken to the doctors about whether either of them have been cleared. Both were at practice Thursday morning. Sunday is the deadline when Shannon said both need to be healthy to be eligible to play in the season opener against Charleston Southern.

As for his team's first opponent, Shannon said: "They try to run a spread offense and they're going to do a lot of blitzing and zone blitzing and things like that. You can't take them lightly. You got to make sure your doing all the solid things on defense and picking up the blitzes on offense."

> Leonard Hankerson's move from the inside to the outside after his big night Tuesday has moved around a few other players at the receiver position. Sam Shields said Kayne Farquharson is now playing inside with Kendall Thompkins and Thearon Collier backing him up in the slot.

By my count and after talking to receivers coach Aubrey Hill earlier this week, that means the flankers are Khalil Jones, Sam Shields, Travis Benjamin, Jermaine McKenzie and Davon Johnson. The Split Ends are Leonard Hankerson, Aldarius Johnson and Laron Byrd.

> Junior Tervaris Johnson spent most of his first three years at UM lost in the secondary at cornerback. But Shannon and special teams coach Joe Pannunzio both said earlier this week Johnson is making strides at tight end and on special teams and could be a contributor.

Tervaris_johnson
I remember watching Johnson as a junior at Monsignor Pace when he hauled in a long pass as a tight end and always wondered why he wasn't given a shot at tight end earlier in his career. Johnson who was always a big corner said he's put on 12 pounds in the offseason and is now at 240 pounds.

"I feel better at tight end than I did at corner. I never really played it in high school, I was more of a safety," Johnson said. "I'm more happy at that position. It's come easier for me. At the beginning, I was having a little trouble with playbook. As I grasp the playbook, I'm getting more comfortable."

First, but who's cares, Shannon should have named his starter already, I hope this isn't a repeat of last years QB situation

Nice work, Manny. Too bad about Streeter. I agree with you that it's not a huge loss, though. Can't wait until Thursday.

Heck of a lineup!
Great work Manny aka on the money Navarro!

This is best collegiate receiving corp ever assmebled should place 5 guys in NFL. Should make Marves life very easy.

Great job Shannon!

I feel bad for Streeter, but I still expect him to be great and to really help soon. Actually, redshirting one of these great receivers will probably help the team a bit down the road. It probably won't effect us too much this year, and that incredible receiving class will be a bit staggered as they begin graduating 3-4 years from now.

The 2009 USNews Rankings are out today.
#8 Duke
#23 Virginia
#28 Wake Forest
#30 North Carolina
#34 Boston College
#35 Georgia Tech
#49 Florida
#51 Miami
#53 Maryland
#61 Clemson
#71 Virginia Tech
#83 NC State
#102 Florida State

who cares who the qb starter is! I'm sure the guys in practice everyday know who it is. i'm sure shannon knows who it is. this guy is a different bread. keeping things close to the vest seems to be in his dna. there are many other reasons they wil succeed or fail that have nothing to do with announcing the starters to the public.

That's not a bad transition from corner to TE IMO. It sounds unconventional, but if you think about it, he probably developed loose hips from playing corner, which should help him at TE, considering a TE plays in smaller spaces, and has to make sharper cuts than a WR.

Manny being Manny, good stuff

Bad news about Streeter, but I guess he'll be able to redshirt. Not really a big deal because there is depth at that position.

Eric Moncur and Allen Bailey are the biggest injury concerns for us. They need to get back on the field ASAP.

UM hasn't moved up much in the rankings....Duke is #8, pretty impressive. I would've ranked Georgia Tech higher, its a great school.

Good job Manny. Even though we have great receiver depth with the incoming class, I still feel bad for Streeter. He was a guy that UM fans wanted recruiting wise, but we actually thought he was going elsewhere. We were pleasantly suprised that he chose UM. I'm just glad that it wasn't a knee and wish him all the best in his recovery. Hopefully he will be the Jermaine McKenzie of the 2009 season. I was always high on Tervaris Johnson as a safety (size wise he reminded me of Sean Taylor) not a cornerback. I know he is a Tight End now, but why wasn't he used at Safety, especially with all the issues we have had there last year?

Manny...thanks for the updates. It's about time to ask: Are U ready for some football?

GO CANES!!!

86 EMAIL ME YOUR MAILING ADDRESS!!!!!!

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!~!

heh, heh, heh...Hate to say I told U so, but I DID tell U so!

AJ > Streeter in 2008

M.H....U have mail!

Manny wants the blog to be about the Canes and Canes only, not ANYTHING else. We ALL should support that initiative. I know I do.

FALLEN OFF THE WAGON

86, who comes over and views the blog, more than most, prints on his site, that I was an idiot, for posting that guy's rant and for not being a defender of Him, on the SS.... I replied, that it was not my job, to defend him, and that calling someone an idiot, on the blog, is an example, of why he is not liked on the SS.
Someone saw the exchange and posted it on the SS. He didn't like the discussion, and again, called me names... and acting CHILDLIKE, like he does...banned me from the blog...

THE WAY WE WERE

hey M.H., herr hitler uses CanesgirlNC to recruit you ...
HONEY TRAP

Green...I owe 86 a bet....that's all...lol

Feel bad for Streeter but I think it will help him out in the long run...and help the team as well.

GT would be ranked higher than #35 but outside of engineering they aren't as well-rounded as other public schools like UNC and UVA are...I graduated in 2001 from Tech.

THIS TEAM WILL BE ON IT'S WAY TO A NC AS SOON AS JACORY HARRIS BECOMES THE QB!!!!

HARRIS IS THE NEXT KEN DORSEY!!!!

WHEN THE COACHES SPEAK ABOUT MARVE, THEY MENTION HIS ABILITY TO MAKE PLAYS WITH HIS FEET!

THAT SCARES ME!

WHEN THE COACHES SPEAK ABOUT HARRIS, THEY MENTION HIS ABILITY TO READ DEFENSES AND HIS ACCURACY!

THAT'S A U QB!

BOTH GUYS ARE GOOD QBs, BUT JH OR TC WILL TAKE US TO A NC!!!

I DONT KNNOW WHY CS IS THERE! HE IS ONLY 5'11 ON HIS TIPPIES!!!!!!!!!!!

Rumor is Marve and 4 other players susptended for first game. WHAT HAPPENED?

From what I understand, Marve did not complete an anger management after his arrest for drunk driving. The NCAA and the higher-ups in the university wanted to suspend him for 4 games, but Shannon had some pull and got it down to 1 game (Thursday Night vs Charleston Southern).

I don't believe it...It was on a gator blog!

Manny, do you know if there is any truth to the Marve being suspended rumors?

MARVE UPDATE: I've made a few calls and no one has confirmed that he is suspended. We'll see what happens.

Posted by: Shandel_Richardson | August 22, 2008 at 08:28 PM

Marve and Shandel are here at my house and BOTH are denying the rumor.

Q: Manny, do you know if there is any truth to the Marve being suspended rumors? Posted by: Cane_Mutiny | August 22, 2008 at 09:36 PM

A: I've tried making several calls in the last hour (I didn't hear of it until late tonight because I was out with my wife), but no one at UM has returned any of my phone calls. This could of course just be the case of someone trying to stir the pot (remember those Adewale Ojomo off the team rumors earlier this summer). Either way, I'm sure we will find something out tomorrow.

I'll let you know as soon as I know something.

This would be terrible news of course. For Shannon to let this happen with his starting quarterback as well as four other players right before the start of the season would be a travesty. I think, though, its just a bad rumor.

what are you talking about?
discipline of this sort lies outside the NCAA purview ...

YENTA

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_college_hurricanes/2007/11/marve-arrested.html
what are you talking about II?
Robert Marve arrested for vandalism ...
case dismissed ...
TWO FOR TWO

Yes, I read that the case was dismissed, however, from a well-placed source, who's usually on the money with things like this, he had to complete an anger management class and didn't do so, hence the likely suspension when the announcement is made tomorrow on the depth chart and who the starter will be for the opener (likely Jacory).

why should anyone believe you?

DISCREDITED

NCAA does not order players to take anger mgt. classes.., but who can?
school?
coach?
judge?

Skinny inexperienced J. Harris against Tim Tebow. laugh

BLOODBATH

One poster on a board says he talked to Marve's cousin and found out Marve and 4 other canes wont play in the first game. Either this poster is a jerk or there is something to it. So far the U has not responded to direct calls on this subject from Canesport(rivals site)
If true having your best QB face the Gators
without any real game experience is a dumb move. We will know Sunday when the depth chart comes out.

Good god, Danny is a hanger on Rutgers fan who has no sources. He rides a bike and has no connection to the NCAA. He's clearly an idiot who wants to be important. Making stuff up is his way of feeling important and wanted. Here's a clue, nothing he said is remotely true or was taken from sources we can all access.

If anyone knew about anything, it should be a paid staffer at the Herald, not some guy who's blog purports the sanctity of the Subway stores in NYC.

If Marve doesn't start on Thr, then Harris will start against the Gators as well. There you have it.

Stalker, you really look stupid now.

Seminoles punter Gano scheduled for surgery, expected to miss 4-6 weeks

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State punter Graham Gano is scheduled to have surgery on his right knee and will be out 4-6 weeks.

Gano suffered cartilage damage at practice Monday, and will undergo the procedure Friday. He has been handling all kicking duties for the Seminoles, meaning his loss leaves holes at punter and kicker.

Redshirt sophomore Zach Hobby will take over most of the kicking duties, and freshman Shawn Powell is expected to punt in Gano's absence.

Florida State also said linebacker Aaron Gresham and defensive back Ed Imeokparia will miss the season with torn knee ligaments. Both players had season-ending surgeries Wednesday.

University of Miami quarterback Robert Marve was told on Friday that he has been suspended for the season opener against Charleston Southern, his former high-school coach and another friend confirmed Saturday. Both said they believe the suspension stems from an incident last year in Coconut Grove.

Unless coach Randy Shannon - who has not announced the suspension publicly - changes his mind about Marve's suspension, freshman Jacory Harris is expected to start UM's opener Thursday at Dolphin Stadium.

However, associates say Marve indicated that coaches reaffirmed their faith in him during the Friday meeting and left him with the impression that he has a good chance of being the starting quarterback beyond the opener.

Whether that means he starts the Sept. 6 game against the Florida Gators remains to be seen, however. A University of Miami official declined to say if Marve has been suspended, and Shannon has not named a starting quarterback.

Tampa Plant Coach Robert Weiner said Marve responded to news of the suspension ``in a very positive way. Robert is 100 percent a team guy and whatever is the best thing for the University of Miami is what Robert wants to do. He will continue to su pport the team in whatever way he can.''

Weiner declined to comment further. Marve was unavailable for comment.

Marve was charged with two misdemeanors - resisting arrest without violence and minor criminal mischief - after he broke the mirror of a car and briefly tried to evade police on foot last Halloween night in Coconut Grove. Marve became upset after having an argument with his girlfriend and was not aware an officer was nearby. He was not taken to jail.

One official very close to UM said coaches did not want to affect Marve's motivation level this off-season by telling him sooner about the suspension.

Marve set state records in completions, touchdowns and passing yards as a senior in 2006, won Florida's ''Mr. Football Award'' and led Tampa Plant to a state title. He redshirted last season after sustaining hand and other injuries in a July 2007 c ar crash.

Harris has pushed Marve in competition this month, and Shannon indicated he might name a starter on Sunday. But several officials close to the situation expected Marve would win the job.
