Q Do you really think Jacory has a chance to be the starter?

From what I saw in the spring game, and from at the "closed" scrimmage the other night, J. Harris has looked better to me (by a small margin). His arm doesn't seem as strong, but the offense moves a little better when he's in there, and he's been very accurate.

PS I'd probably be happy with either one.

Hey manny Whats up?

2 Questions: With Mcgee commiting have you heard of any other chatter that us cane fans should expect more commits soon?

Also in your eyes compared to last year how does the team look physically?

HEY MANNY,
FROM THE PRACTICES THAT YOU HAVE SEEN, DO YOU SEE THE YOUNG LINEBACKERS MAKING STRIDES?
AND ALSO, WHAT KIND OF CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN FROM RANDY SHANNON AS A HEAD COACH AS FAR AS DEALING WITH THE MEDIA,HIS PLAYERS,ETC.?

Nobody wants to leave questions hey,

Barring injury do you think the oline can be a dominating force? How do they look? what has stoutland have to say?

Whats goin on with some of the young guys, futch, Telemaque, Andrew smith, ben jones, are all these guys redshirt candidates?

One more ?

Q. Has any member of the UM football team been arrested since Shannon took over?

I ask because I cant think of one, but on the flip side the #1 team (Georgia) has had 8 arrests since January. Not picking on GA, because they are not alone, Penn State, FSU, UF, Alabama, Iowa, and the list goes on. Many schools have experienced shame off the field due to their football programs. Not really trying to give Randy a pat on the back for 2 reasons. 1.because I dont think one person has enough control to stop 85 young adults from doing something stupid every now and then 2. us canes fans care far more about what happens on the field. If UM players are not getting in trouble, why not?

A: I think Jacory has a shot. I just think Marve is going to get the job. Jacory to me is the second coming of Ken Dorsey. He's such a smart quarterback who knows how to recognize coverage. I think Marve might have the stronger arm and a little more athleticism. Both are very good though and either can do the job I think.

q: manny your coverage thus far this season has been superb...especially the audio/video feeds. u think ben gordon should move back to TE...? how is tommy streeter coming along?
thanks
drty

Hey Manny,

Do you ever see Shawnbrey or Lee Chambers mattering or are these two guys that will get lost in the shuffle?

Btw love the audio and video on the site.

A: 1. There are a few offensive linemen Miami is in the hunt for and I expect there will probably be a few more commitments before the start of the season. McGee by the way is a tremendous pickup. 2. I'd have to say they're in better shape. Aside from what happened to Antonio Dixon last week, it seems to me like this is a slimmer, faster and more physically built team. Dixon has lost 25 pounds. Other guys have lost weight too. It looks like nobody was lazy over the summer.

Q. what is UM recruiting status with the Seminole trio, Rueben Randle and some of the o-line prospects they are targeting?

> With so many guys out on the defensive line, freshman Micanor Regis of Pahokee High says he's been getting so many reps at right defensive tackle he's lost count

BEATDOWN AWAITS

hey manny navarro, update the status of Marti & Wylie

In your eyes from what you have heard and seen who is poised for a breakout season, or a coming out party?

Q: Considering the number of recruits that Miami brought in with the 2008 class, it seems likely that a few of them will redshirt. Who would you say out of the freshman coming in would be most likely to redshirt this season? Will there be any surprises on the list (maybe Streeter since we have heard surprisingly little about him so far)? When will the whole redshirting issues be decided? I thought they had at least a week or two into the season to sort that out, if I remember correctly. Thanks for your answer and thanks for keeping up an informative blog for those of us who just can't justify shelling out money for the paid sites out there.

Q: HEY MANNY, FROM THE PRACTICES THAT YOU HAVE SEEN, DO YOU SEE THE YOUNG LINEBACKERS MAKING STRIDES?
AND ALSO, WHAT KIND OF CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN FROM RANDY SHANNON AS A HEAD COACH AS FAR AS DEALING WITH THE MEDIA,HIS PLAYERS,ETC.? Posted by: 5AND7SUX | August 12, 2008 at 07:51 PM

A: What's up 5-7? We may not hear it everyday, but I got to believe Sean Spence and Arthur Brown are even better by now than they looked in the spring game. One guy who certainly looks like he's gotten better too is Darryl Sharpton. I think the linebackers -- for the first time in years -- will really be solid on this team. As far as Randy is concerned, he's treating his players the same way he did last year. The media, though, is getting less access than before. We used to be able to grab more players after practice and talk to assistants. Now, they only allow us to grab assistants when we are doing feature stories. I can't complain, though, it could be worse.

Q: Last year the Canes were ranked 108th passing offense. With the coming of a new QB that hasn't taken a single snap and a WR corps that the coaches described as "receiver by committee" do you see Miami's passing attack breaking into the top 80?

Manny, what are the biggest differences you've seen between last year's practices and this years?

Also, what's with the rumors about Lamal Berry and Lamar Miller still being in the picture??

We heard that Brandon McGee planned to enroll early. But won't that count toward the 08 class which already met (exceeded?) the scholarship limit? I know even intrepid reporters like you can get confused, but will he be able to enroll early?

Q: Barring injury do you think the oline can be a dominating force? How do they look? what has stoutland have to say? Whats goin on with some of the young guys, futch, Telemaque, Andrew smith, ben jones, are all these guys redshirt candidates? Posted by: PimpT | August 12, 2008 at 07:58 PM

A: I definitely think the offensive line is the strength of this team as long as it stays healthy. You got a nice rotation at tackle and guard. I just have to see how good a job Xavier Shannon does at center. He's the X factor. Stoutland, who I think has become the best assistant on this team (he's turned Chris Rutledge, Joel Figueroa and other projects into good players), is excited about his unit. He just needs to turn his focus on finding some tackles for the future.

All the freshman are learning. I definitely think there's a chance a few of the receivers will redshirt. It only makes sense for Miami to save a couple of guys and separate what amounts to a loaded class. I think you'll see four receivers redshirt and four play significantly -- likely Aldarius Johnson, Laron Byrd, Travis Benjamin and Davon Johnson. The rest of the guys -- except maybe for offensive lineman Ben Jones -- will not redshirt. They'll play a lot on special teams and get in for a few series here and there.

After all the hype that we've been hearing about the freshman, and how the older guys are really making strides, has your prediction for this season changed at all?

Q. Has any member of the UM football team been arrested since Shannon took over?

A: Good point C-Dub. The only kid I can think of who got in a little bit of trouble was Robert Marve last year. But flat out arrested? Nothing comes to mind right away.

Manny, How solid of a commitment is Oliver Vernon? Also, is Orsen Charles still hanging around? What are the biggest changes that Nix has made with the playcalling now that he's actually got some weapons on O. Is it safe to say he's on the hot seat? Peace

Q: Manny your coverage thus far this season has been superb...especially the audio/video feeds. u think ben gordon should move back to TE...? how is tommy streeter coming along?thanks, drty Posted by: Drtycane | August 12, 2008 at 08:04 PM

A: Hey Dirty. It's Richard Gordon by the way. I'm not a fan of havign kids switch positions. I think it only puts them in a whole and confuses them and gives them more to overcome to get on the field. But in the case of Gordon, he was always a tight end in high school. He's used to make plays with the ball in his hands. He's big, fast and strong and if Randy can find a way to utilize him, then I think it can be a decent move. I just wish they would have let them stay tight end from day one. Also, Streeter is a kid I haven't heard a lot about since he's arrived at UM. But there is still a lot of time in camp for him to shine.

Javariss James, any chance he gets into the Heisman disscussion this year Manny, especially if UF goes down in the Swamp?

Q: Do you ever see Shawnbrey or Lee Chambers mattering or are these two guys that will get lost in the shuffle? Btw love the audio and video on the site. Posted by: shwarma | August 12, 2008 at 08:05 PM

A: Thanks for the compliments on the video and audio. Its something I've really put a lot of effort into. Regarding McNeal and Chambers, lately we've been hearing a lot more about Derron Thomas. But I still think McNeal could be a star on this team. Chambers is a kid I'm hoping emerges on the special teams. Because we hardly hear anything about him in the running game.

Manny can you comment on the change in defensive philosophies this year from Miami's typical cover 2 man to Young's zone blitz. Does it seem like the team is adjusting well (I know the guys are saying its easier to learn but are they doing it well is a different story)

Manny Last question, haha....

Do you know if any of the coaches visited any others in the off season to learn? That is huge to me, maybe some NFL teams or other college coaches around the nation. Nix would benefit the most as he is still relatively young and heads alot of young talent.

If you don't know can you find out? Thanks in advance

"Javariss James, any chance he gets into the Heisman disscussion this year"

PUT DOWN THE CRACK PIPE...BACK AWAY

Manny, I am jusy wondering what to expect from Young's defense. Should we expect alot more blitzing than in the past, or just a different style of blitzing? More man to man or zone?

Q. what is UM recruiting status with the Seminole trio, Rueben Randle and some of the o-line prospects they are targeting? Posted by: 4-Real | August 12, 2008 at 08:07 PM

A: I haven't been keeping up with the recruiting end of things as much since camp started, but from what I hear from others UM has a real good chance at getting those kids from Seminole. It's quite obvious to everyone Miami is desperately seeking offensive linemen so I'm pretty sure they're going to get one of these kids who have made unofficial visits to UM over the summer.

1 more question...
when the d-coord. was canned reporters and fans were curious w/the hire of coach young, being an older coach and out-of-conference....does it seem like the defense is understanding his defensive schemes..and will his scheme give the gaturds problems come sept 6?
out...u the man

Manny, from a thousand miles away, great job.

You said one of the teams strengths is the o-line. What do you see as the weakest unit? Are the special teams are vastly improved?

Q: hey manny navarro, update the status of Marti & Wylie. Posted by: green | August 12, 2008 at 08:09 PM

A: Still nothing Green. I've been in contac with Marti's reps, who have called UM numerous times and haven't heard anything from the school. Shannon didn't mention anything on the freshmen today either. The consensus among the media is someone is going to greyshirt and most believe it will be Wylie.

manny long time no talk! gotta run, wish i could have stayed around but ill catch up tonight! few q's:

Do you see the running backs becoming much more productive with hill at FB? loco seems to think hes the real deal and i love his attitude.

From what you've seen, what is marve's tendency to scramble? Does he wait for the pocket to break down or is he more keen to take off if he cant find an open guy right away?

and finally- how are special teams? do you think bosher will be alright with all of punts/kick offs/kicking or is having wieclaw ready a necessity? and how is coverage on kick offs and punts?

Sorry for the long post but eager for info and insight!

Q: In your eyes from what you have heard and seen who is poised for a breakout season, or a coming out party? Posted by: PimpT | August 12, 2008 at 08:10 PM

A: I'd say Darryl Sharpton, Javarris and Graig Cooper (they're going to touch the ball a ton) and Joel Figueroa (he's going to be a stud).

ANY STREETER NEWS?

Q: Considering the number of recruits that Miami brought in with the 2008 class, it seems likely that a few of them will redshirt. Who would you say out of the freshman coming in would be most likely to redshirt this season? Posted by: David (Clearwater, Fl) | August 12, 2008 at 08:11 PM

A:David, thanks for being a loyal poster. I kind of answered this one earlier. Ultimately, there doesn't have to be a decision on redshirts until the end of the season. I mean, coaches obviously plan for it. But there doesn't have to be any formal announcement until the season is over. It's all based on how much the kids play if at all. I believe the rule is now to qualify for a redshirt is playing less than 30 percent of the season.

Any truth to the rumor, that you dunked over Shandel?

Q. Forgive me for wasting a question guys, but can somebody please tell me where i can get a UM beenie the players wear under their helmets? Please guys, that is a must have for me. Live in a state where UM ain't that popular.

Q: Last year the Canes were ranked 108th passing offense. With the coming of a new QB that hasn't taken a single snap and a WR corps that the coaches described as "receiver by committee" do you see Miami's passing attack breaking into the top 80? Posted by: improvement | August 12, 2008 at 08:12 PM

A: Without question Miami is going to be better at passing the ball. It's hard not to be considering what happened last year. Breaking into the Top 80 should be the goal. Northern Illinois was 80th last year with an average of 202.4 yards per game. This offense should average more than that.

Q: Any truth to the rumor, that you dunked over Shandel? Posted by: M.H. | August 12, 2008 at 08:45 PM

A: The only way I can dunk over Shandel is if I'm standing on a ladder and its an 8-foot rim. The earth simply won't allow me to have a vertical leap. Shandel can ball. But I'll bust him in baseball or Madden.

Sorry buddy... arriving late!

Manny, what's with the rumors of Jamal Berry and Lamar Miller being at practice and still being in the picture?? Any substance??

4-real
a do-rag or skully cap?

Q: Manny, what are the biggest differences you've seen between last year's practices and this years? Also, what's with the rumors about Lamal Berry and Lamar Miller still being in the picture? Posted by: Cavaleer | August 12, 2008 at 08:13 PM

A: Cav, unfortunately I've only been able to see one practice (the one that was open to season ticket holders). What I see as far as a difference is the kids' attitudes. Last year, after things started going real bad, there was little energy or excitement in most of the guys' voices. This year, those Northwestern, Booker T., Pahokee kids have brought a level of excitement and hope. It just feels different.

As far as Berry and Miller are concerned, Miller has told me he's still very interest in Miami and says the Canes are still interested in him. He's improved his GPA (it's now a 2.6) and he says he recently scored an 1160 on his SAT (the new test). I think he still has some improving to do with his GPA, but if he gets the scores, I still believe there is a chance he goes to UM. I'm convinced Berry is not an option anymore.

And I haven't seen them at practice.

Q: We heard that Brandon McGee planned to enroll early. But won't that count toward the 08 class which already met (exceeded?) the scholarship limit? I know even intrepid reporters like you can get confused, but will he be able to enroll early? Posted by: BamaCane | August 12, 2008 at 08:16 PM

A: It's definitely confusing Bama. McGee did say he plans to enroll early. Not sure how or if that's possible. But if he's talking about it that means someone at UM told him its possible.

manny appreciate your help and dedication, with all the gaytes getting that injury bug do we stand a chance in your opinion? I personally feel we do.

Q: After all the hype that we've been hearing about the freshman, and how the older guys are really making strides, has your prediction for this season changed at all? Posted by: canesfan2121 | August 12, 2008 at 08:20 PM

A: I definitely feel a little more optimistic -- especially with what I've seen with some of the young receivers. But after being witness to last year, I can't picture this Miami team completely flipping the switch and being completely better than they were last year. At best, I say they go 9-3. And that's with everything falling into place.
