Marve suspension reaction

Wow. That's all I got to say about this morning's news. After plenty of rumors on the internet Friday night and some great reporting work by our Barry Jackson and Susan Miller Degnan this morning (I made a few calls too Friday night but struck out), The Miami Herald confirmed quarterback Robert Marve -- and possibly a few other players -- have been suspended for the season opener in relation to incidents in the past year.

The news was supposed to break Sunday night, but as usual around UM it leaked out two days earlier. One thing is clear, the timing Um_mug_rmarvecouldn't be worse. Miami is set to open its season in six days. Marve and the other players were told Friday by coaches about their suspensions after practice and according to Barry Jackson's sources, coaches held off on it because they didn't want the players to ease up during fall camp. I can understand that from a team perspective. You want Marve and the other possible suspended players to make sure they're ready for the season and you don't want to deflate them. And it's not like not having them against Charleston Southern is that big a deal.

But from a public relations perspective, this obviously doesn't shine well on the program. My question to you is could it have been handled better? Should coach Randy Shannon just have announced before fall camp that those guys were out for the opener? Would it have made a difference for you?

Those are the public relation issues, but there are team issues now, too. When a player is injured or gets suspended (we remember the Sam Shields incidents last year) they've always had to work to get back onto the first team. Obviously, Jacory Harris will start the opener now. Does Shannon just give Marve the reigns in Gainesville as week later? Not according to his own rules. It's going to be very interesting to see how this is all handled in the next few days.

Either way, one thing is clear, this has become an unnecessary distraction for a team coming off a 5-7 season and dire need of positivity heading into a new year.

Wow, any idea who the other players are? If not, any chance we find out before Thursday?

Manny...this is simply shocking news at this point just before the opener. I think ALL of us are confused and stunned by this news.

If it is that bad 86, then UM has some real problems. I don't believe that list to be accurate. I've heard of two other names. But I don't feel right posting them until we get it from more than once source.

buy space on miamiherald.com ...
FREELOADER

you stole that from grassy, canesport or insidetheU ...
ACCESS DENIED

hey manny navarro, you want associate with this predator ...
that's one thing.
but when you associate the Miami Herald with him ...
that's quite another.

THE COMPANY YOU KEEP

Geez 86,

I hope (more like PRAY) your sources were yanking you a bit on these other guys.

U cannot be serious..86Cane, is that list for real? I mean if thats true and Randy is the one suspending these players than he's just taking things way too far and is also digging his own grave. If that list u have there is accurate then i'm stunned, shocked and hoping to wake up from this nightmare. All those suspensions would affect the biggest games on our schedule, except for maybe VT....This can't be happening.

If Randy and the staff knew that they were going to have these guys suspended for the first game before camp started, it seems to me to be a huge error in judgment to let the cat out of the bag now. I suppose they were trying to keep MArve and other players motivated, but if it's only one game, than wouldn't they be motivated to get a nod for game 2 at the SWAMP? If this had been addressed a month ago, by now it would be old news and the focus would be on the game on thursday night. Now the focus is on suspensions.

Read what I posted: The LIST is NOT yet confirmed by independent sources.

But after last night when I vehemently disputed the Marve rumors and they turned out to be true how can I duspute this list?

IMHO to have the Marve suspension leaked out by his cousin and not officially announced by UM is a PR mistake the size of Texas.

The LIST could prove to be FALSE, I am NOT claiming it is FACT. But after the way UM handled the Marve rumor what do you expect people to do?

Now every rumor has credibility and UM is behind the news instead of out in front of it. No matter how U cut it that is bad PR policy and a violation of Communications 101.

Randy handled this situation very badly. Who knows how this can effect robert marve psychologically. Randy Shannon has shown that he does not treat his players with respect. You ask your players to put the team first and your ego's aside, yet randy has the nerve to hide this information from his so called leader on the field. Classless.

Rebecca, you don't even know what you're talking about. If Marve didn't handle himself properly none of this would be happening in the first place.

If you disagree with the timing of the announcementt, that's one thing. But the advantages of the announcement are just as legitimate as the disadvantages.

Stop being childish and superficial.

Wow, this is shocking. I really wanted Marve to have some experience before the UF game.

I want to know why ESPNU is showing Vandy vs Miami U of Ohio.

If the game was on gameplan I might buy it for the season since I live in Houston and the UM games don't get shown here. Sports bars will have UM on a little screen and no sound.

86, is the source behind this list the same source that leaked the Marve suspension?

If it is then i'll really begin to worry..Who am i kidding, i'm sh!ttin pants now.

That list is utter BS.

Shannon has been very consistent on this. You must conduct yourself a certain way to play for Miami. What we heard so far is that the Marve suspension is "stemming" from the incident last year. Maybe he was punished for that and now being suspended a game for missing his anger management class.

I hear everyone saying In Shannon We Trust and then he does something that we disagree with and we don't even know the full details and everyone is saying Shannon has lost it. Keep your story straight people.

hey tom popadak, what's your source?
VAGUE

I heard that Kyle Wright, Kirby Freeman, Cortez Kennedy, and Chris Rix is on that list too.

Cav, i like Randy as much you do but you defend him way to much. This is horrible and you can't go suspending kids for every little thing. If he keeps sh!tting on his players he will lose them and his job.

I thought Marve was punished last year for this. Anger-management classes? Are u kidding me? Punishment for that should be running laps, not taking your best QB out of the equation after all he's been through to come back. This could really hurt him and the team. And if that list that 86 put up is in anyway true than just call this season a loss and believe me Randy won't be around next year to win with the talent he brought in.

G86, we all knew that you were an idiot but now you've just proved every bad post written about you.

You are officially the worst fan in the history of sports. How the hell can you post such a boldfaced lie on this forum and still claim to be a fan of the canes. You are an imposter. This also proves that your website "flamespace" is nothing but a website that promotes racism and starting false accusations about the team you supposedly are a fan of?

Then, you have the guts to say..."NOT confirmed". Are you f@#$ing serious? Why the hell would you post it then? Do you think the object of your affection(Manny) would still have a job if his posts were nothing but lies that he made up out of thin air? Please do everyone a favor and stay off this blog. You do nothing to contribute and you only start malicious rumors and lies.

Here's a bet for you: If your "NOT confirmed" list is true, I'll never post on here again. If your proved to be the liar that you are and your list isn't true, you do everyone on "Eye On The U" a favor and dissapear back into Gayturd land with the rest of your Gayturd buddies. DEAL!!

Seriously retard, we knew you were stupid but I think you just suprised all of us with the stupidity of this attempt to maliciously hurt these kids in this list.

I think they should of just made Marve run until he passed out during the fall as form of punishment for this. I'm not all that upset that he is going to miss the Charleston Southern game, I'm more upset at the fact that since he is going to miss that game he won't be able to play against Florida. Don't get me wrong I like Jacory a lot but Marve has just been the best QB so far. I like where Randy is coming from but he needs to realize that another 5-7 season and he'll be looking for new work.

That list of players suspended couldn't possibly be accurate. I mean if there were these prominent starters being suspended for 2, 3, 5 games then why would they have practice as much as they have? What logic would there be for Orlando Franklin to practice all fall and then be suspended when another guy could have gotten reps in? This is like when Courtney Harris went down with injuries. The rumor mill blew up and said Graig Cooper was hurt too and out for the season. People put out this information in order to get UM fans upset and for there to be a negative vibe around the school. Marve is out. Maybe a couple of others as well. When we find out the other names then and length of time just live with it. We can't change it. We have to go out there and cheer our hearts out and hope the guys behind the suspended players get it done. It's a negative for the team that Marve is out, but we have the opportunity to turn this into a positive. We need to rally around Jacory Harris. Remember this guy hasn't lost a game in two years. He's a good quarterback and a good guy too. In the long run this team and this program will be better for this. The type of nonsense that used to go on will no longer be tolerated. Besides, these young men are SUPPOSED to be here for an education. They are SUPPOSED to be learning lessons on how to conduct themselves in the real world. Let's have some perspective here.

86Cane,

You first post this at 12:52PM:"Manny...this is simply shocking news at this point just before the opener. I think ALL of us are confused and stunned by this news."

But then just two minutes later you post this at 12:54PM:"According to another source there are several other suspensions being handed out by Shannon. These suspensions, which have NOT yet been confirmed through independent sources are:

Miami (FL) Hurricanes Suspension List:"

How can you be "shocked, confused and stunned" by the news of Marve being suspended when you were about to post the names of twelve other players? I'm calling shenanigans on this one. If it turns out to be true than it's bad. But I doubt it.

I'm going to laugh when 86's list is proven true. Even if it's half true, that would be really really bad!

Manny, As much as I luv Randy Shannon, his decision to handle Marve's suspension in this manner is outrageous. There are several different scenarios I've been "war-gamming" as to why he decided to handle this incident in this manner......as follows:

Scenario 1: Shannon has no clue regarding how to "met out" a fair, just, and timely punishment.

Scenario 2: Harris actually beat out Marve (it was a close competition), but Shannon didn't possess the moral courage to announce the results for fear of a public out-cry. Suspending Marve was an "easy-out". If Harris plays extraordinary against Charleston Southern, Shannon ends up looking like a genius, and the public out-cry over the Marve suspension subsides.

Scenario 3: Shannon never planned on suspending Marve, but just recently he received very intense pressure to punish Marve more severely for the incident.

Scenario 4: Shannon discussed this w/ his coaching staff months ago. One or more of the coaches on his staff suggested handling this punishment as it has been handled. Shannon is now kicking himself for listening to them!

I'm going to laugh when 86's list is proven true.

Impossible

Just so you guys know, I'm hearing its six guys total who are suspended. Lengths are not believed to be more than 1 or 2 games.

Thanks for the update Manny. Are we talking major players? 86cane's list looked like BS from the beginning. I mean it's a list of almost every important player on the team this year that isn't currently rehabbing an injury.

Just so you guys know, I'm hearing its six guys total who are suspended. Lengths are not believed to be more than 1 or 2 games.

Well G86, Your allowed one last post before you are banned from "Eye On The U". Remember, DON'T EVER COME BACK HERE AGAIN! Also, make sure to leave your home address because I think the guys on your "list" have something they want to give you and your wife.

I'm speechless well not really. Shannon, you don't punish somebody almost a year later. You make the punishment on the spot. What is wrong with you? What's next you're going to kick Xavier out the team because he started talking to you in practice.

Hey, I have an idea why don't you take the names off their jerseys again because they went 5-7 the year before. I'm really begining to have doubts about you. I think the head coach title is getting to your head.

This is just like last year. Unexpected quaterback will start the first game. Some where in the season the other quaterback will step in because quaterback number one was not able to handle the job. It's Dejavu all over again. I don't think Shannon wants to keep his job.

poof! in the blink of an eye, tomfoolery popadak erased unsourced libel from his blog entry ...
HIT & RUN

amazing

I like RS a lot and think he's the right coach for the program, but this is a little out of hand. He's starting the season off on the wrong foot and he's essentially guaranteed that they're going to lose the UF game. Marve needs to be the starter from day one, b/c he gives them the best chance to win. It's essential to get him game experience heading into the UF game. How can he go into that environment with not even a snap under his belt and succeed? This suspension is unneccessary and it crushes most of the momentum that the team had developed this spring and this fall. You're taking something that Marve had put behind him and dragging it back out in his face. Why would you do that? The kid has clearly already learned from his mistake and place in well in his past and moved on! Why would you do something like this?!? Terrible decision by RS IMO.

Im totally for disciplining your players and making them accountable for their actions. However this was an issue that should have been straightened out and handled when it happened. I have faith in Jacory but if Marve was chosen to be the starting quarterback suspending him for the first game of the year doesnt particuarly makes sense. Charleston Southern with all do respect will not be the toughest game of the year however week 2 we'll have a showdown with Florida, what better game for this freshman to get his game experince with than with Charelston Southern. This is a Tune-up game without a key component of your offense. I don't understand the logic behind this, but I guess we have to keep with our slogan for now "In Shannon We trust".

I couldn't of said it better David, this drill sergeant attitude is starting to wear on me a little. You just don't start the season this way. I know Charleston Southern doesn't prepare you for the Gators but at least it's something different than what u see in practice and it's an actual game that builds confidence. What really pisses me off is that this has something to do with last year....Manny also said there could be up to 5 more players getting suspended with some missing up to 2 games. I hope they've committed serious violations if this is true cause it would be mind boggling to have players suspended for the Florida game while FSU's players are getting ready to get back on the field the following week after being involved with that cheating scandal.

First off randy shannon is gonna rebuild miami to what they used to be. 2 you need discipline at miami otherwise whenever a cane gets in trouble we become thug u to the national media even though ohio state, florida notre dame and the like have more players on the police blotter.3 he couldn't suspend marve last year marve was hurt and redshirting such only could suspend him this year. 4 this was badly handled and they should of announced it after they told the players not waited a couple days. 5 86 deserves all the crap hes getting for postin a list without confirmation. all 86 did was trash some players who probably aren't even in trouble. That;s just wrong and he should be ashamed for posting info thats that bad about someone without proof. if you are gonna post something or act like a media guy you gotta make sure you got your facts right. To many people today post stuff just to make universities and players look bad and media outlets run with it as fact defamming people for no reason other then they dont play for the school you root for. Shame on 86 for even thinking of posting a list without proof.

CORAL GABLES _ After the rumors heated up Friday night, multiple sources have confirmed quarterback Robert Marve has been suspended for the season-opener against Charleston Southern.

UM has refused comment so far, but could release a statement later this evening. From what I'm told, the suspension stems from Marve not completing the required probation work that followed his arrest last season in Coconut Grove. Marve was charged with criminal mischief and resisting arrest without violence.

It seems this was more of an NCAA or a higher-ups decision, not coach Randy Shannon's. It makes sense because of the timing. I'm almost certain Shannon would have dropped the hammer sooner, but the NCAA or whomever probably only recently intervened. Either way, it leaves UM in somewhat of a tough bind. For one, the Hurricanes are without their starting quarterback. Marve was expected to win the job. Also, it creates more instability at the position. Let's say Jacory Harris, who will start against Charleston Southern, has a huge game? It will be awfully tough for Shannon to go back to Marve for the UF game, but that is the plan.

The difficult situation of starting an inexperienced quarterback just got tougher.

A few thoughts:

-There could be possibly four players suspended the opener for academic reasons. I've got no confirmation, but some names I'm hearing are running backs Damien Berry and Eric Houston and receiver Kayne Farquharson. It's going to be an interesting first week of the season.

I'll check back in later.

Shandel is reporting that the ncaa made randy suspend marve. That would explain why it went the way it did. He is also reporting that its because marve didn't do all his community service. just goes to show if you play for ohio state , usc or the thugs at fsu and florida the ncaa looks the other way but play at miami and becaue of espns bias against the u you get screwed.

Very Poorly handled by Shannon. No other way to put it. He is going to learn to be more forthright in his dealings with people or he will soon be looking for a job.

FIRST, ALL OF YOU PEOPLE ON HERE ARE STUPID DOUBTING RANDY, I AGREE HE HAS DONE SOME QUESTIONABLE THINGS IN THE PAST BUT THIS MOVE IS BRILLIANT! THIS SETS UP THE FLORIDA GAME VERY NICELY BECAUSE THERE WON'T BE ANY FILM ON OUR KEY PLAYERS FOR THEM 2 STUDY. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN IS NOT GONNA GET MARVE READY FOR FLORIDA SO GET OVER IT. MARVE WILL BE PUMPED 2 GET IN THE SWAMP HIS 1ST CAREER START AND BALL!!! AND IF IT IS COOP AND SOME OTHER PLAYERS THAT ARE SUSPENDED ONLY THE 1ST GAME THAT EXPLAINS WHY RANDY HAS LET THE OTHER RUNNING BACKS GET MORE REPS THE PAST 2 SCRIMMAGES. LADIES AND GENTLEMAN HOLD YOUR PANTIES AND WAIT UNTIL AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN RELEASED!

I smell something rotten here. Let's see how it plays out before judging Shannon. He's been good at fending off criticism. Granted, he is a great recruiter. I am still waiting to see if he can hack it in the sidelines. Go Canes.

Rumors, rumors, rumors. Until I hear something from Coach Shannon, I'm not believing a word that anybody says.

So, it is confirmed that Marve is suspended. How quick we are to crucify the player, the coach and the university.

Now, we're hearing that it might be the NCAA that stepped in, and immediately, the Miami bias jumps to center stage.

Get a grip everyone.

I hope Marve is the next Bernie Kosar (national champion as a redshirt freshman). However, if Marve didn't live up to his end of the bargain (performing community service hours), then he should be suspended until things are cleared up.

Marve, and for that matter all college football players, is in a tough situation. He is 19 or 20 years old, an adult in the eyes of the law, but still very much a kid. Becoming a man in this world is a tough road, but still one we all must go down.

I hope the truth comes out, and when or if it does, regardless, I hope that it makes this team stronger.

-cheers

I agree w/ CubanCane except for one thing. "Good" Drill Sergeants know when to drop the hammer at the right moment and when not to. I have no problem w/ a Drill Sergeant mentality as long as the players know you're clear and concise, you're fair, your intentions are honorable, you're consistent in your treatment of players, you're able to mix in rewards when earned, and you display a well-timed sense of justice. There is nothing worse than a head-strung leader. I know; I've had to pull in the reins on more than one. Personally, I'm willing to forgive Randy Shannon on this one and drive on. It's a done deal, but he better get his head out of his rectal cavity. I have grown kids and I have led men and women, i.e., been there; done that. I learned from my mistakes along the way. I hope Shannon can learn from this. As for Robert Marve and family, I hope they continue to drive on in a positive fashion and give the Coach a pass too.

all these people giving opinions on something where there is so little information. a lot of these comments could be supported if there were facts to go along with them but for some of you to scream bloody marry without knowing anything other than what's posted here is ridiculous.

… and you wonder why blogs have the reputation they do

is shandel richardson a reporter or parrot?
regurgitating misinformation:
1) arrests for criminal mischief lie outside NCAA authority ...
2) case dismissed ...
so, how could the court tack on probation?
3) nail down the names of transgressors before dissemination ...
once it's out there, can't take it back ...

IRRESPONSIBLE

Handled poorly for one major reason. This story is relevant for one major reason. Marve really needed that Charleston game to get his feet wet. Starting green in Gainesville could ruin his confidence for the rest of the year. Now Im thinking Harris has to get the nod for the rest of the year. I can already tell what's going to happen. Harris starts, plays well versus a lesser team. Marve comes in a week later, plays like a deer in headlights in Gainesville, and Harris relieves him, does a little better, but not much. Then...hello QB cotraversy, all over again. Bad move Shanon.

you people act as if randy shannon is coaching this program in a vacuum. remember everyone, he does answer to someone(s) and did not make this move by himself.

Bunch of hoes...always lookin for something to cry about...ya'll should have your keyboards unplugged...or just go watch some other team...i hope they beat charleston southern good and atleast keep it close in the swamp just to see all you d!kriders bak in line to swing off coach shannon's pubes...bunch od chicken little the sky is fallin b!tcH3$...GO CANES!!!
