Marve suspension reaction

Wow. That's all I got to say about this morning's news. After plenty of rumors on the internet Friday night and some great reporting work by our Barry Jackson and Susan Miller Degnan this morning (I made a few calls too Friday night but struck out), The Miami Herald confirmed quarterback Robert Marve -- and possibly a few other players -- have been suspended for the season opener in relation to incidents in the past year.

The news was supposed to break Sunday night, but as usual around UM it leaked out two days earlier. One thing is clear, the timing Um_mug_rmarvecouldn't be worse. Miami is set to open its season in six days. Marve and the other players were told Friday by coaches about their suspensions after practice and according to Barry Jackson's sources, coaches held off on it because they didn't want the players to ease up during fall camp. I can understand that from a team perspective. You want Marve and the other possible suspended players to make sure they're ready for the season and you don't want to deflate them. And it's not like not having them against Charleston Southern is that big a deal.

But from a public relations perspective, this obviously doesn't shine well on the program. My question to you is could it have been handled better? Should coach Randy Shannon just have announced before fall camp that those guys were out for the opener? Would it have made a difference for you?

Those are the public relation issues, but there are team issues now, too. When a player is injured or gets suspended (we remember the Sam Shields incidents last year) they've always had to work to get back onto the first team. Obviously, Jacory Harris will start the opener now. Does Shannon just give Marve the reigns in Gainesville as week later? Not according to his own rules. It's going to be very interesting to see how this is all handled in the next few days.

Either way, one thing is clear, this has become an unnecessary distraction for a team coming off a 5-7 season and dire need of positivity heading into a new year.

MAY BE EUGENE MARVE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND, AND MAYBE SHANNON NEEDS TO PUT IT IN BIG BOI FROM ATL TERMS: "YOU DON'T GET IT DO YOU, I'M HIS DADDY NOW."

Dude, you're terrible!!! The fact that you would even had Brandon Harris name on the list, just sad

RANDY IS DROPPING THE BALL DOWN HERE!!!

Wow. The UF game is going to get ugly for you guys.

Randy Shannon is an idiot, I wouldn't be suprised if he loses this years team like he lost last years team. He better win this year. There are a lot of coaches that can recruit because that is only thing he has done since being hired. I want to know what the team leader think of this decision. Fox said last year it seemed the coaches were more focus on discipling players instead of winning games.

This is all too funny to even comment... Better than any Soap Opera on T.V.

God my stomach hurts !!!

Sad part about it is that I actually agree with a gator on this one.

You have guys that produce a list of suspension without any sources what's so ever. Now that's funny!!

The funny part is that, who cares? You're going to win your first game and you're going to lose your second game. And it's not like you're looking at finishing in the Top 25 this year. No matter who is or isn't suspended. So what's with the outrage over a bunch of 1 and 2 game suspensions? What are you going to do, beat Charleston Southern by 20 instead of 30? Lose to UF by 50 instead of 40?

Who cares.

Wow, by 50 huh!! Do you care to give me 50 points in the Florida game, since you're calling out point spread, Kyle!!

No. The point is that it doesn't matter. Point spreads are for losers. A win is a win; a loss is a loss. You're not losing to Charleston Southern, and you're not beating Florida. So who cares if the point spreads aren't as pretty as they could have possibly been.

If you do want to make a bet, I'll give you 2:1 odds on either game (you'd have to take Charleston Southern over Miami, or Miami over Florida). Hell, I'd give you 5:1 odds for those games.

are you guys serious, the kid break team rules and get minor infraction and its randy's fault.should harris have a good or great game so be it, marve will get the nod for uf. imo you guys are wayyyyyyyy over-reacting. you do the crime, you do the time.there's always going to be a kid or two(3 or 4)that will see what they can get away with, marve lost. it;s only for 1 game.all i'm hearing is how stupid randy is, yet it was MARVE WHO BROKE TEAM CURFEW and committed a minor infraction.

No, you said the Hurricanes will lose by 40 or 50, better yet, let's go 30!! I mean, if you're that confident in win by a big margin, it shouldn't be a problem.

Don't be a punk, stand behind your comments, cause you're a gator homer that comes on blog because your blog sucks!!

So again, do you care to make a wager, and cease all that psycho babble stuff

And 5:1 odds for the CS game, yea, I'll take it any day, any time, Say, Hard Rock Casino, and we can exchange contact info there, and please believe you will pay me!!

We'll beat CS by 20 5:1

When it comes to being held accountable, RS and the sports information department need to step to the head of the line for punishment. The biographical info on the official web site is replete with errors and omissions. It is predictable that these errors will be broadcast by announcers throughout the season. Hopefully, such shoddy work would not be tolerated by the academic community. As for suspensions against CSU, there is no big deal. Playing against this team would not in any way prepare a QB or other player to face UF. Last year, Hawaii beat CSU 66-10 without their starting QB. If Miami can't do as well with the two walkon QBs, you know it will be another sad season for the Canes. The hysteria on the blog is ridiculous, given that no authoritative information has been released. The post by 86 is really despicable as it defames players without any evidence or reliable source. That is the type of behavior that should not be allowed on the blog. Shannon should get someone to advise him on media relations. Bad news should come from the head coach, not from an army of rumor mongers.

Haha, bornacanefan, I can tell that you're not one for reading. My initial post's entire point was that spread does not matter. My point was, in short, "who cares if you win by more or lose by less?" Doesn't matter. And neither the Charleston Southern nor the UF game is really in question. You're going to win the first, and lose the second. Point spreads are for stat geeks and gambling addicts. No coach preps for a game aiming to beat a team by a certain amount of points. So betting on such a point is completely arbitrary.

And again with the not reading: if you want to take the Charleston Southern bet, you need to take Charleston Southern to beat Miami. I have said three times now that Miami is going to beat Charleston Southern with or without Robert Marve and with or without any other combination of 5 players that could possibly be suspended for that game. I'm offering you 5:1 odds to take Charleston Southern over Miami.

Again, KYLE, it wasn't about the point spread, it was about calling your bluff. Punks and hoes make bluffs, real men stand behind their comments. So you said 40, then be a man, or unless you're like 18, and need a permission from daddy to make a grown man bet!!

Cause, he would be a part of your problem too if you make that bet!!

Manny,

You know how I feel about Coach Shannon, I guest blogged on it on your site, so you know I belive whole heartedly in what he does. BUT, this is a mistake. Marve should've been punished immediately. Not now. To let this go on this long and then all of sudden say, Hey you are suspended for something he did last year baffles me. It'd be like falling asleep at work and your boss catching you, tapping you and waking you up, then next year before you are supposed to get your raise, saying YOUR FIRED for sleeping on the job! Doesn't make sense. I really hope this doesn't back fire and make Marve bitter.

Good luck to us all!

Blah, blah, blah. Spare me the chest-thumping idiocy. I don't care if UF beats UM by 1 point or 50. I just used the numbers I used because they are the "worst case scenario". And even in the worst case scenario, you're still 1-1 after those two games. In the best case scenario, you're still 1-1 after those two games. Point: these suspensions don't mean d*ck.

As for "being a man", you're hiding behind a gigantic arbitrary spread. So what are you talking about? I just offered you 5:1 odds to back your team in the UF game and you ignored it. Which, admittedly, is the smart move. But don't try to beat your UM drum when you're walking away from 5:1 odds on a 'Cane game.

The post by 86 is really despicable as it defames players without any evidence or reliable source. That is the type of behavior that should not be allowed on the blog.

Agreed. There is no question that 86cane, should be banned from this blog. Even the Gayturd fans agree that that was a truly dirty move. You can't just throw a list on here of 12 kids that are suspended for up to 5 games, an absolute bold-faced lie, and still call yourself a fan of the team. What if those kid's family members read this blog? If "The Miami Herald" has any integrity whatsoever, this child needs to be blocked from accessing this website.

getting fired is a bad analogy. it's more like getting caught falling asleep on the job, getting talked to and told of the unacceptable nature of your offense and next year, during yearly review time, not getting that yearly raise because you didn't meet what was expected of you. That is not stupid... that's actually the way the real world works.

I don't understand all the criticism. As far as I'm concerned, this was handled perfectly. After the rules (backed by action) RS set last year (exhibit A: Sam Shields' lack of PT), you knew Marve SHOULD be suspended otherwise RS would lose all credibility. On the other hand, if the suspension was known going into the spring and fall competition at QB, that would have created an even bigger controversy. Some of you would have argued that Jacory should have the edge since he'd be penciled in as the starter for the 1st game with a chance to get live game action in preparation for the Gators.

The way it was handled gave both guys an opportunity to earn the job on the field and develop a bond without the "noise" from you bloggers. Look how fired up some of you are now...imagine the crap that would have been circling had this "news" been around while the competition was still ongoing.

Hi Folks -

This is no big deal - check out all the other stuff going on with other programs. Marve will be fine, he just needs to keep focused for the rest of the season. Sounds like the NCAA stepped in, with all the talent on this team THE U should have a good season this year and GREAT seasons in years to follow. Thier is TOO much talent here to fail, it's situations like this that pop up that are reasons why the Coaches have built up depth. If players have Academic issues they need to be held accountable. It's college right? or is it...........THE DUDE ALUM 88

We can still get Coker back....We're still paying him! lol

I think this hysteria is really absurd. This season is more about getting players experience and progress. It isn't about contending for a national title or even an ACC title. It would be great and all, but this is such a young group of talented athletes that it is beyond reasonable expectations. Marve is going to play. He is going to play in big games. He is going to get experience. So are a number of freshmen and sophomores. Allen Bailey will probably be a preseason all american next year. If he stays healthy. By season's end Sean Spence, Arthur Brown and Jordan Futch may very well be our starting linebackers or at least getting some big time minutes. Laron Byrd will probably become a big time player next year. As for this year there are going to be ups and downs. This team is good enough to go to a bowl. And that should be the goal. 7 or 8 wins is a success and not out of the realm of possibilities. Beating UF, Virginia Tech or Wake Forest this year would be a great sign for THE FUTURE. Beating all three is highly unlikely. The UF game should be looked at as a chance for these young kids to play in front of a national TV audience against a hated rival in hostile territory. How they respond to that is important. Whether they win or lose if they play well and hang with the Gators for a while it's a great sign. If they get blown out and fade like last year's team then there is a lot more work to do. Either way that game is a measuring stick for how far along the freshmen and sophomores are. It should be looked at as nothing more. I'll be at that game. I'll cheer my heart out for them to pull off the upset, but like I said I want them to play well first and foremost. We are rebuilding people. A 1 or 2 game suspension, an injury to a key player that holds them out of a game (Allen Bailey?) or losing to UF is not the end of the world. The season as a whole is more important than a single game. Even if we come off this season with 3 wins, if we were close in all the other games and did not get blown out then that should be viewed as a success. Remember 48-0 in the OB finale. That was embarassing. As long as we don't endure that kind of loss again this season we will be fine. 2009, 2010 we should be back in the national picture.

By the way, if I were a Gator fan I wouldn't be too stoked about your season. First of all, you guys play in the SEC. There are few in any "off" weeks in that conference. Secondly, you haven't even played game one and you're riddled with injuries. Not a good sign. Thirdly, I know he's won a Heisman and a national title (he didn't start though), but look at your big games last year. If Auburn had any offense they would have blown you out. LSU didn't play for 3 and a half quarters. Georgia embarassed you guys with that end zone celebration and your boys sat there and stared like a bunch of wimps. Then Michigan fumbles three times in the red zone and still beats you. That was a heavily underdog Michigan team. Tebow has yet to win a big game as a starter. Period. Plus 500 plus yards to Michigan is embarassing.

Randy is a moron.

SOME YOU IDIOTS WANT RM TO START FOR ONE REASON ONLY.

NEWS FLASH: JACORY HARRIS IS THE BEST QB ON THE TEAM!

YOU IDIOTS NEED TO STOP DOUBTING RS! RS SWEAT & BUSTED HIS ASS TO PLAY FOR THE U! YOU COMPLAINING IDIOTS NEED TO CHECK YOURSELVES!

WHY WOULD HE SUSPEND RM IF HE DID NOT HAVE TO?

IF RM DID NOT DO WHAT HE WAS SUSPOSED TO DO, TO F-ING BAD.

THERE IS A PRICE TO PLAY AT THE U.

NIX BETTER BRING IT THIS YEAR! I DONT WANT TO SEE DIRECT SNAPS TO RBs AND WRs! I WANT TO SEE U FOOTBALL!

NIX, IF YOU ARE LISTENING! YOU ARE ON THE CLOCK!

that list has to be garbage. how does a freshman who entered school in august get suspended for 3 games? and the comment about florida being wimps and not responding to GA dancing on the field? I suppose you prefer the FIU-UM response? (fight) Classy. Oh - the NCAA does not suspend or push schools to suspend players for off field stuff. They probably have no idea Marve even got in trouble.

One thing is for sure, Randy is terrible at handling the press. If he doesn't improve, recruits won't come, because they WILL believe what they read and if its incomplete, they'll go to Fla or Alabama or worse....LSU.

Randy sucks at talking to the press.

RS IS NOT THERE TO TALK TO THE PRESS!

F--K THE PRESS!

RS WILL WIN OR HE WILL BE LLOKING FOR A DC'S JOB SOON!

Hey Spike,

No I don't really prefer a big fight to break out, but what response do you think you would have gotten from LSU under the same circumstances? Or Ohio State? Or Auburn? There at least would have been some pushing and shoving. Probably some punches thrown. Doesn't mean there would have been a brawl like with FIU. Georgia embarassed UF with that. The whole friggin' team came out on the field and the Gators stood there slack jawed. My point in stating this is to point out that there doesn't seem to be much of a fight (figuratively) in them. When someone challenges that group of players they fade away. Happened with Auburn, LSU, Georgia and Michigan. This was a Michigan team that was beaten by App. St. and blown out by Oregon. Both of those schools use versions of Florida's offense. Except apparently they do it better. I would not want an ugly brawl, but when you are humiliated by a team the way Florida was and you slink off it's a bad sign.

WHAT WOULD BE THE DIFFERENCE IF HE TOLD US SOONER OR LATER...SHANNON DID WHAT HE HAD TO DO...MARVE PUT HIMSELF IN THIS POSITION...THE ATTITUDE OF THIS TEAM ISN'T GOING TO TANK LIKE LAST YEARS TEAM BECAUSE OF ADVERSITY...THIS IS GOING TO SHOW THAT SHANNON BROUGHT IN PLAYERS WHO DESPITE ADEVERSITY WILL STILL RISE TO THE OCCASION AND STILL GO OUT AND COMPETE AND REPRESENT "DA U"

Another Shannon head scratcher.
But, hey he thought it was a great idea to have a tight end return kicks too...

HELP! Does anybody know where I can watch the first game on the internet? I've been told that ACCSelect.com might carry it but I'm not sure yet. PLEASE HELP! Die hard cane fan here and have not missed a game in about 10 years. My new cable provider sucks and I cannot get ESPN 360. HELP!!!!!! Go CANES!!!!!

What the F@#$.............

KNOX CANE,

Google espn 360 and then install the plug in and U are ready to go!

Cable provider does not carry ESPN360...

Talking to the press?? Who cares Stalker. Recruits don't care who talks to the press they only care about the football tradition and winning. Winning in Miami cures all. We had a great recruiting class last year and its continuing on this year.

oops wining....

Thanks Randy!

Truth of the matter is that Coach Shannon has to enforce discipline on this team. If he disciplines Marve in te spring then it has no meaning. It is just like disciplining older children, if you hold back and discipline them at the right moment, the child knows what is not acceptable. Avoiding the police and causing a disturbance in the community is a serious offense. TWO misdemeanors for a football program that needs more discipline after the Larry Coker mess is what is needed here. Coach Shannon should be lauded for his attempt to clean the cancerous problems of this team. No offense to Robert Marve but, he put himself in this position, and now as a result he must face his reality, same as in the legal system, when you screw up you get punished. As far as the other suspensions go, if they are not performing in the classroom or are disruptive in the community then they should be suspended no if ands or buts about it. This is 2008 not 1988 where guys can fire automatic weapons from their dorms. Without some discipline we are doomed y'all lock stock and barrel. Marlin Barnes death, Jammi German beating a guy up for spreading false rumors, Warren Sapps' marijuana use, Butch Davis telling recruits that Shannon won't be around next year is all inexcusable. Cudos to Randy Shannon for standing on his integrity. African Americans have high moral standards also.

You know I'm hearing diff reports that this was a Football deal, and some are that this was a University suspension leaving the coaching staff out the loop, suposedly a power move by the new AD??
1st. it shows deceit on the staff by not informing the players of their fate, how does a player trust his coach now? Ans he can't, he now has to worry every time he makes a mistake that he'll have to look over his shoulder the entire yr just waiting for a coach to make a PR statement and suspend the star player.

WORRIED ABOUT HURTING THEIR CONFIDENCE???
Now that's funny, the individuals are not supposed to matter over the team right coach, the what about the other 40 players that you just now yanked the rug out from under them, how about their confidence, knowing that they are going into the first game of alot of their college careers with one hand possibly 2 tied behind their back

I'll put money on Sam Shields being one of the suspended players.

RELAX U Fans ... I'll Suspend Timothy by Half-time ...

Tim 3:16

86, you created a storm by posting that b.s list!! you really need to check yourself

you really need to check your fake journalism skills

Posted by: bornacanefan | August 23, 2008 at 05:28 PM

Honestly, 86, do you really think Brandon Harris is going to be on that list, considering his father works closely with the football program.

I know you want people to come on your site, and stuff, and this is rare for me to come over and post, but I be dam if you assoicate suspension with a kid like Brandon Harris.

You lost a lot of creditbiliy for that b.s list.

You can vault that!!

Posted by: bornacanefan | August 23, 2008 at 05:34 PM

Really? Did I now? Imagine little 'ol me doing all that! Wait until you see my next little trick.

Oh yeah, and one more thing...EAT ME!

Posted by: 86Cane | August 23, 2008 at 06:04 PM

LOL, 86. I can't believe you posted that entire list on the Eye on the U blog.

the defamed should sue this scumbag ...
we'll see who laughs last ...

LI(A)BEL

I don't think that Shannon would suspend Rob unless he had too. I do agree that if Jacory has a great game and Robert struggles vs UF and jacory relieves him and plays solidly, ther ecould be trouble in paradise.

The issue shouldn't be whether Shannon disclosed this to the media or the players in a manner which we don't agree with, it should be that our team leader needs to keep from getting arrested. After you get arrested you don't get to decide how the punishment is meted out.

WOW!!!! You got it right Manny. This was not the way to handle the situation. If Marve is to be the starter now his first game experience will be in the Swamp.

Yo...Merlin, couldn't agree more. You don't want to be suspended? Don't get arrested period......there has to be consequences to your actions. Suck it up and lets move on.

Keep the Faith! I'm upset about Marve especially when i'm flying down for the first game. I was really hoping to see Marve in action. Very disappointed! However, Jacory will get the job done! I'm sure Randy Shannon doesn't want Marve on the bench either!
Marve was wrong for what he did! Accountability! He redshirted last year and couldn't be suspended. He is being disciplined for what he did. If he kicked the mirror of your car how would you feel? I give Marve credit for owning up to what he did. Now take your punishment like a man.
Get behind this program and support it! What's right is right! Marve wasn't going to single handlily defeat Carleston Southern! This decision will hopefully
fuel Marve for the Gators! Don't take it out on Randy Shannon!
What time does the Tailgaiting start? I'm flying into Ft. Lauderdale? What's a realistic time 11:00 am? Hope everyone posting is going! Go Canes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Support this program!!!! Go Canes!!!!
