Canes crush Aggies 41-23

Sitting here at FIU Stadium where the 12th-ranked South Florida Bulls are playing the Golden Panthers. But I'm still keeping an ear out to hear what's going on with the Canes.

I'm listening to the game here on WQAM and following the game on CBS Sports' Gametracker. I've been really impressed at how UM responded to getting punched in the mouth on the game's opening play. Since the 62-yard touchdown pass by Jerrod Johnson to Mike Goodson, the Canes have gone on a 24-3 run.

> Robert Marve has been impressive, connecting on 11 of 13 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. He hit freshman Thearon Collier for a 28-yard touchdown and had a 66-yarder to Collier called back by penalty. Solid, solid outing for Marve. He's showing us he can be effective when the offense is opened up.

> Graig Cooper has two touchdown runs and 77 yards on only three carries. UM has thrown the ball 20 times and run it only 8 times. I expect that to flip flop in the second half with a 14-point lead.

> So far, three Canes have gone down with injuries. Guard Chris Rutledge, Marve (who returned in the second quarter) and defensive tackle Marcus Forston. WQAM is reporting Forston injured his shoulder. In a move that didn't surprise me one bit, Allen Bailey saw some time at tackle while Forston was out. Bailey is certainly big enough to handle the war in the trenches.

> Despite reports he likely wouldn't play, Eric Moncur started at defensive end for Miami Saturday. He's made two tackles for loss in the first half.

> Huge punt return by the way by Travis Benjamin to set up UM's final score of the first half. He had a 46-yard return to set up Collier's touchdown pass. It's amazing what happens when you have a few playmakers available.

> Moncur comes through with the first defensive turnover of the season, picking off a pass to setup another UM touchdown -- a Marve to Farquharson TD pass. Canes are now blowing out A&M 34-10.

> Shannon said turnovers come in bunches. He was right. Glenn Cook recovers a fumble and scores to make it 41-10.

> Big, big win for the Canes, who showed they could move the football on the ground with Graig Cooper and use its weapons at receiver. The defense causes two turnovers that lead to easy points. This is what U wanted to see today.

When the 2006 FIU season officially went in the tank after the Rocky 7 auditions against um at the OB, there were NOT 2,400 fans in attendance at the last 3 home games.

buddy, if you want to imitate my name go for it, but don't forget to add the "9 'ships" part at the end.
Texas Cane is right: the fact you are hanging on around here is a measure of the level of anxiety Gaturd nation has about Randy's lockout of Urban Crief from what Howard used to call "The State of Miami." Randy is a hot commodity now, top 10 academic ranking, squeaky clean reputation among the media, local and national, while Urban Crier has the petulant used car salesman with the bad haricut thing going. Urban has no future: his spread offense has been figured out by Bill Young, Teebow caught a bug in the Phillipines and hasn't been the same since, and Percy's heel injury from the police dog bite isn't heeling right.
Canes will own the football world in 2 years, Gaturds will be irrelevant in their own State.

Everyone has a "voice" at UF!

DON'T "TASE" ME BRO

I can't stop laughing about that one!!!!

Everyone has a "voice" at UF!

DON'T "TASE" ME BRO

How funny, but true.

I write a blog myself. I am a UM alum. I read your comment mentioning FIU. I realized what you wrote was true, especially early on. I know that requiring a season ticket for that first game has college ADs around the country chuckling. I thought your apology was a very nice gesture.

I will never boycott any writing, agreeing or disagreeing.

Maybe one day you'll be on the same level as Wake Forest again.

Posted by: SouthPaw | September 21, 2008 at 09:26 PM

Yeah you are right. We will never be at Wake Forest Level. We will ALWAYS BE ABOVE IT!!!!!

Revisit when your school or Wake Forest Has FIVE NC's....

Gees...

BTW... Manny, you are doing a great job. You said what you saw and felt in a BLOG. Totally cool and fair. There is some heavy Five Rings on the finger envy going on.

Everyone has a "voice" at UF! - Atlanta or Chicago or Sarasota or TX Cane

Imagine that so does UM..........

"I beg of you, please, please, please don't run up the score on us!" - R. Shannon

EXCUSE U

Wish we had the Gators near the end of our schedule. We would have wiped their smug faces with turf towels.

Anyway, this TAMU victory is sweet. Now to put NC in their place. NC may be improved or Virginia Tech is really bad... We will see how it goes at the FIn's Stadium.

If that was truly Manny Navarro writing the apology, it rings a little hollow. If you are "very proud to be a Golden Panther," then why was the one thing you mentioned about being at FIU stadium on Saturday so negatively slanted? Why was your "heart in Texas"?

How in the world does two empty sections constitute a "half empty" stadium and an "embarrassing scene"? Your comments were made at the very beginning of a 5pm game. Is that the only thing that you, as a proud FIU alum, could write about your whole experience for the day? How much did the Miami Herald save in airfare to not send you to the UM/Texas A&M game? Was it really worth it when you write one untrue statement summarizing a very significant day for FIU athletics? You sure don't sound proud. The funniest part of all is that if there were alot of empty seats in the stadium, it is exactly because of FIU alum like you, Manny Navarro. If the Herald didn't send you, you certainly wouldn't have paid the small sum and shown your Panther "pride." FIU alum who fervently follow the Hurricanes and ignore the Golden Panthers are the WORST kind of fans. So if you were embarrassed, you should take a look in the mirror and look no further.

And I can explain two of the empty seats on Saturday--I live out of state and purchased two season tickets to support the program, but wasn't able to make it down this weekend. The airfare for one trip down costs more than the entire season ticket expense. But maybe you can ask the Herald to buy you and other "proud" FIU alum season tickets.

summarizing a very significant day for FIU athletics? Posted by: SouthPaw

THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT ATHLETIC EVENT FIU HAD WAS WHEN MIAMI BEAT THEM UP!! AS A COMMUTER SCHOOL IT WILL TAKE A CENTURY TO BUILD THE FAN BASE MIAMI HAS & U WILL NEVER BE IN THE SAME LEAUGE.. U WILL ALWAYS BE OUR LITLE SISTER SCHOOL.. YOU SHOULD OF STAYED IN 1-AA WHERE U WOULD HAVE A BETTER RECORD THEN 1-23.. GO AWAY BRONZE PANTHERS!!!

Herbal Minded, is it that hard to spell out the word "you"? And don't you know that people that type in all caps are CRAZY?

Too many herbs.

manny manny manny...... never read your blog and never will.... shame on you for talking about your alma mater like that.

fiu stadium was rocking saturday, no way to flip that

GO Panthers!

FIU alum who fervently follow the Hurricanes and ignore the Golden Panthers are the WORST kind of fans.
Posted by: SouthPaw | September 21, 2008 at 11:34 PM

Actually I'd say those are the best type of fans. It's called loyalty. When you grow up loving and cheering for a team for 18 years, you don't stop loving that team because you start going to a new school. Especially when that new school has never given anyone anything to be proud of. I was lucky enough to be able to go to UM but even if I hadn't, I'd still be a Cane. I've loved the Canes since I was a kid and now as an alumni and Hurricane Club member if I ever have kids I will try to establish that love in them also. And if they decide not to go to UM for whatever reason I would expect them to continue loving the Canes no matter where they go. You ask my brother where he goes to school and he'll tell you FIU. You ask him what he is and he'll tell you he's a Cane. Why? It's a Canes thing, you wouldn't understand.

The Canes have been here for a long time and are an established commodity. Why? Because they've won. They've won big, they've won often and they've made it fun to be a Cane fan. You all need to realize that you are the new kids on the block and respect is earned, not given. You want to come on here and talk, win some games. In the past three years you've averaged less than won 1 win a year. Step it up.

SouthPaw, THATS ALL U GOT.. NO WONDER THE BRONZE PANTHERS GOT BEAT-DOWN IN THE OB..

"people that type in all caps are CRAZY?"
NEVER HEARD THAT BUT, CRAZY IS WHAT CRAZY DOES..

Are you FIU losers freaking serious? It is embarrassing. You had 16,000 people show up to YOUR INAGURAL GAME for God's sake. And it was against a ranked team!!!! That is beyond embarrasing. Just shup up, all of you. You people are pathetic. You are not a real school. You are a fvcking commuter school. You are not Miami's rival. You shouldn't even be Division I. Nobody cares about FIU football and no one ever will. Face it.

By the way, you want to know the real reason why there were only 16,000 people at your game? Because more than half of your students are Canes fans and were watching a real football game at the time, you fvcking delusional idiots.

Also, you idiots call Manny a front runner and a fair weather fan? He's always said he's been a Cane fan all of his life. So how does that make him a front runner? If anything that makes him even more loyal. His kept his loyalty to Miami even with him graduating from another school. Idiots.

I don't know why the FIU alumni are so upset. Quick question for those FIU alumni....

Where does your AD come from? How about your head coach and many of his assistants?

Hey, I'll save you the trouble... no need to hurt your peanut brains on this. The answer is simple.... UM.... That's how badly FIU is trying to be like UM... The U can be imitated, but it can NOT be duplicated...:)

canatic:

Actually it's pretty easy to understand why their upset. If I rooted for a team that was a pathetic hole in the ground, headed by a coach who is in over his head, with a fan base that can't sell out an 18,000 seat "ON CAMPUS" stadium with a student body of over 35k...I too would be angry. Problem is, they don't know how to express that anger, so they lash out at someone who states a fact in a passive tone in an opinion based blog about a completely different team. They thump their chest thinking they have defended their turf, because the players they root for can't muster a decent showing if you went out their and slapped in the face with motivation.

It's really pathetic, but at the same time, it really isn't surprising when you think about it. All they want is respect, and the only way they know how to, is to send angry e-mails to people hoping someone will listen.

Hey Panthugs, win a game and maybe we'll listen.

Wait, did a UM fan just refer to FIU fans as thugs?

I mean, come on, say what you want about FIU's football program and what not, but even you guys can see the irony in that statement.

There's a reason UM and Notre Dame's rivalry in the 80's was known as the "Catholics vs. The Convicts" and why people all around Miami know exactly what you are talking about when you say "Thug U".

That was funny.

Either way, the hate from UM to FIU is pretty funny. You guys see us as 'nothing' and then we've got 4 or 5 guys who consistently do nothing but troll Pete's blog bashing FIU.

I don't see why it has to be such a hostile relationship, but in all honesty, I see it mostly coming from the green and orange side.

hen we've got 4 or 5 guys who consistently do nothing but troll Pete's blog bashing FIU.

FIU HAS A BLOG?

Half-full huh?

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/colleges/fiu/v-morephotos/story/694936.html

Taken straight the Herald.

Frankly, this has nothing to do with bashing UM. All FIUers are saying is, when you get sent out to cover an event (your own school's opening day) and you spend it "listening to the (UM) game here on WQAM and following the game on CBS Sports' Gametracker", that is disrespecful to the our school. Show some respect and do the job you were sent out to do!

NO1 CARES ABOUT FIU!! U DONT DESERVE RESPECT... BUCK IT!! I'M DONE WASTING TIME TALKING BOUT fiu.. NEXT SUBJECT!!

Seems to be that FIU does have a blog and a message board:

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/fiusports/

http://fiugoldenpanthers.com/forum/index.php

There is a notable difference in the posts of UM fans and other college football team fans. UM posts are much more juvenile. It's like talking to middle school kids. Is that what "its a Canes thing, you wouldn't understand" means?

Tell your administration that you want to play the other D-1 football team in Miami immediately. You guys look really scared and pathetic that way you are running away from FIU. I'm done with this blog until UM has the guts to start scheduling FIU again. In the meantime, its clear that the author of this blog has a deep seated bias against FIU.

In the meantime, don't give up on school, education is the key to success.

leaving our guy behind to cover minor-league college football before a make-believe fan base ...

DISRESPECTFUL

but for strongarming an unsuspecting student body thru obscene activity fees ...
unwanted florida international football would die a lonely death ...

DIRTY LITTLE SECRET

I wish we could move on from this thing...my opinion: If i was a UM beat writer who spends day and night thinking about UM sports, I would be disappointed missing a big game in a fun stadium...

And don't worry Manny, I will always need my UM fix and will therefore always read the blog...

The guts to start scheduling FIU? Are you really this stupid? Uh, Miami is busy trying to schedule real schools like Florida, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, not cupcakes. You are nobody. You replaced Florida A&M on our schedule for a couple of years, that's all.

Manny- No need to apologize- FIU fans are overly sensitive and took your comments out of context. Bottom line, is FIU fans, like Gaytird fans are W-A-N-N-A-B-E-S! That's ok, It's ok to dream, but pleeeease quit talking so much trash! Example: The Texas A&M President (that's right, Donna Shalala's counterpart at TAMU)- an FIU grad (good for her), and avowed Cane-hater, during the game, said that she would much rather see TAMU beat the canes than Texas!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!

I mean, Texas A&M boosters and Trustees are probably still throwing up! She obviously has not learned what it means to be an Aggie in the Big 12. She obviously has not read up on the history of Aggie football, she merely exposed her Cane hate as an FIU grad. What a sorry woman!

CAnehater and other sorry gator fans- U wish.

UM founded in 1927
UF founded in 1877? that is a 50 year difference!

UF: 50,000 students- Number of alumni? Huge numbers.

UM: 13,000 student +/-
Number of alumni? Not even close.

UM athletics in the 3 major sports: bb, hoops cfb: 9 national championships

UF: 4 How sad.

After all these years, Newsweek has ranked UF as 49th best school in the country
UM has now closed to 51. Yeah that's right.

medical schools UM vs UF-ha ha. Not even close.Shands is a dump!

My point is, Why the trash talk gator fans? I mean, I can see you trash talking the seminoles- youcaught up to them in NCs, have beat them headt to head, and everything but you have nothing on UM- ok you beat UM this year ok. ok. head to head UM still owns UF. And once reverend Te-bown leaves UF, your doen. Done. Just like when Wuerffel left. Done.

Buy Gold

Manny you are ridiculous. Your negative comments towards FIU are not appreciated and with 165,000 alumni, I don't think it's wise to continue to belittle a university with over 39,000 students within the Miami Herald's reach.

FIU Stadium is beautiful, there was a nice crowd and FIU was able to defend itself very competitively against #12 USF. So back off.

Despite being a Canes fan, I agree that Manny's comments were out of line: he was pissed off that the Herald management did not send him to the Texas A&M game, and he was right to be pissed off about it, but that is no reason to take it out on FIU. FIU and FAU are a reality, and while not up to UM, we Canes' fans need to respect their programs, their coaches and their players, many of whom grew up loving Da U, still root for Da U, although some may be bitter they didn't get their chance with Da U. There are many FIU fans that root for Da U, it's not like our relationship with Da Florida Gaturds. I think both groups of fans need to calm themselves down, FIU needs to get over the envy, Da U fans need to get over our sense of superiority, and join in fighting the true evil of all of college football: Urban Liar and his Gaturds. 18 arrests in 18 months tell you where that program is. If true that FIU has 165,000, more of them should have come out for a good game against South Florida.

P.S. I hope many of FIU's alumns/fans come to root for Da U against Butch Davis, who negative recruits against all things Miami, the Hispanic population, the exaggerated crime situation, etc. he is quickly becoming the Urban Liar of the ACC. Guess what Butch, you don't have South Beach, the Florida Keys, Palm Beach or Las Olas.

All you Nix and Glenn Cook haters, I got your crow right here. LOL

Does anyone know if there is a link to get the "D" box scores, like int, tackles etc.

I can only find the "O".

All of you MDC students and GED scUM that post here, hmmmm my guess is all of you ? How sad is it that you support an "entity" to which you don't have any real connection to !!!

For the comment about FIU deserving another BEAT DOWN again !!!! Are you serious ? You must be one of those "brown thugs" that got laid out in the West End Zone and then carried away by the cops, once they realized they arrested you the week before on a warrant.

General Admission, coach class and lowered Honda Civics... City of Miami at it's best !!!

FIUbleu and gold- and your point is? realcane 9ships- you are right. let's cut the crape. But know this- ever since last year's game, it's been FIU students and fans, and players who have been talking smak even after beat down after beat down, year after year. they are like the annoying 'hood dogs that you keep kicking, and smacking, butthey keep snapping at your heels no matter how many times you take a stick to them!

Let's justchill- UM IS Miami, the 305. FIU are their little bro's- Let's support one another against the turds and holes- I mean noles.

Southpaw- Are you f--- serious? LOL. Man. Does FIU have a new course in schizophrenic thinking? If so, it seems that you are taking your curriculum way too serious and it is making you psychotic!

Cane 360 and others- What do you mean? Most of us are actually correct- Nix didn't open the offense last year and he didnt open it against UF. So we were right. He should have and he did, and look at the results.

I must give Nix props on this game. I was one that was hard on him for the lost to the Turds. But like he said, he has to build them up. I think he did a great job on saturday with Marve and Harris. Good job Nix, keep aggressive and bring home the ACC title to the U.

General Admission, coach class and lowered Honda Civics... City of Miami at it's best !!!

Ummm, you just described all the refs and wanna-bes that go to FIU, you @sshole. The University of Miami wouldn't accept 90% of the retards that attend FIU. Do they even decline anyone? Why don't you look at the student population of both schools before you open your mouth.

Pure scUM.

TRUTH HURTS

Well, MN has changed the lead sentence to his blog for the 5th time. Talk about trying to close the barn door after the cows are gone. What were you doing at the FIU game if your listening to the game on the radio and following the game on-line? Couldn't you have done that from home?

Get a life; what a sad excuse for a journalist. One other thing, you are 'persona non grata' on the FIU campus.
