Gameday blog: UF 26, Canes 3 (F)

I'll be going down to the field with five minutes to play to get postgame quotes. I'll be back afterward to update you on what I find out.

> Another questionable call by officials gives Florida a first and goal on the 3 after an incomplete pass to Percy Harvin is ruled pass interference on Randy Phillips. On third and goal, Florida finall scores on a 3-yard run with 13:39 left. UF 16, UM 3
> I think we'll finally get so UM's offense get a little more aggressive here now that UM is down by two touchdowns.
> And Louis Murphy -- Mr. Talker -- caps another long UF scoring drive -- 95 yards on 5 plays -- with 20-yard touchdown reception. This one looks like its over. UF 23, UM 3.

> Great start for UM on the opening series of the second half -- a three and out with lots of pressure on Tim Tebow.
> How about Patrick Nix. Two called timeouts on UM's opening possession of the second half and an earful for Robert Marve and the offense. Not sure you want to jump on the guys. They're playing well. How do you feel about it?
> Another good stop by Miami's defense on UF's second possession after the Gators picked up a pair of first downs. Too bad UM couldn't capitalize on offense.
> Tight end Anthony Hernandez comes through for the Gators with a big 38-yard catch and run to move UF into UM territory. Can the Canes defense stiffen?
> After further review, the Canes get -- well you know. Carl Moore's catch down the sideline gets overturned, giving UF possession at the UM 5. We go to the fourth quarter.

> Miami caps a 16-play, 42-yard drive with a nice long field goal by Matt Bosher. Gators 7, Canes 3.
> How bout those Northwestern Bulls? UM freshman linebacker Sean Spence comes through with a huge sack of Tim Tebow on third down. Tebow tried to throw the stiff arm. Spence wasn't having it.
> And as promised, we see freshman quarterback Jacory Harris with 10:39 left in the second quarter. Randy Shannon said he would play in the first half. Mark it off. He's in.
> Jacory's first drive picks up a first down but fizzles when his pass falls harmlessly to the ground behind the UF secondary. I wonder if we'll see him again this half.
> The Gators outgained UM 69 to 49 in the first half, but UM won the time of possession battle 8:55 to 6:05... a key if the Canes are going to stay in the game.
> Huge play by Tim Tebow this time on third and long. He scrambles, avoids the rush and finds Deopnte Thompson at the UM 41-yard line for a big gain and first down. Florida eventually punts, but pins UM inside its own 1-yard line with 4:17 left.
> UM guard Orlando Franklin makes a bad mistake picking up a penalty for a late hit. It leads to Matt losing 10 yards and Florida's Jeffrey Demps blocking a Matt Bosher punt that gets ruled a safety with :47 seconds left. UF 9, UM 3.
> How about Matt Bosher picking up Brandon James and slamming him to the floor on that kick return. That was funny.
> Maybe Gators receiver Louis Murphy heard some footsteps on that third down drop? Or maybe, he got UM's message.

> Miami has a rough start. First Ryan Hill falls on his butt in the end zone on the kick return. And then UM's offense falls on its butt. A bad punt by Matt Bosher gives the Gators possession at the UM 35.
> Florida takes all of 1 minute, 34 seconds to cash in with a Tim Tebow to Aaron Hernandez 14-yard touchdown pass. Is the rout just beginning? UF 7, UM 0.
> Safety Anthony Reddick is already piling up the tackles. Nice start for Reddick, who was a freshman All-American and is starting to look he could be UM's best defensive player this season after coming back from a pair of knee injuries.
> After gaining no yards on their first two possessions, Miami finally starts to the move the ball on the ground behind quarterback Robert Marve and running backs Javarris James and Graig Cooper. Marve picks up a first with his legs on third down and again on fourth down to move UM to the Florida 25.

I'm sitting inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium aka The Swamp two hours before tonight's showdown between the Canes and fifth-ranked Gators. Since I'm pretty sure everyone will be tuned into this one tonight on ESPN at 8 p.m., I'm not going to provide any detailed info on plays during the game.

Miami_hurricanes_logoBut I will be providing notes and thoughts throughout including answering questions and responding to your comments below. After the game, I'll race down to the locker room to grab quotes for the Canes and fill you in later tonight with what I've learned.

> Miami will be wearing white jerseys on white pants. Florida will be wearing blue jerseys on blue pants.

Florida_gators_logo_2> About 15 minutes ago, I was subjected to some serious Gator propaganda -- along with the 50 or so recruits on hand for tonight's game. As the Gators made their way into the stadium tonight as usual (from their bus with a walk across the field into the locker room) they were followed by the recruits down the middle of the field while a video was blaring music and girls shouting 'It's Great to Be A Florida Gator.' The recruits, with family members, are now sitting in the first three rows behind the end zone that reads Florida. They'll be sitting there all night to watch this one.

I know a lot of people feel this game could affect recruiting between the schools. The truth is, Miami and Florida aren't battling head to head over a lot of the recruits here tonight. The fact Miami was able to win the recruiting war despite going 5-7 almost negates the fact these days winning really affects a recruits decision. I think what plays a bigger role for kids nowadays is the fact so many freshmen are playing right away at Miami. In the grand scheme, as long as Miami doesn't get absolutely embarrassed tonight, this game will probably mean absolutely nothing when it comes to recruiting.

I'll be back before kickoff. Feel free to leave me your questions below.

i hope we mess up tebow those beotches

Gotta love the passing calls to try to run up the score with a minute left. Classless.

Leave the qb's alone

walk off the field shannon dont even shake urban's hand he might have gayturd cooties

night all...I am not up for hearing from the crows at UF nor our own fans who will blast these good young men..the U is Texas AM games is the real test for us based on our youth...we will come back fired up...this is not the U of the past two years....night to those who believe and those with class

by the way we need a new punter

nice lol

The Gaytors love to play Miami when they are down. In a couple of years, the Gaytors will want nothing to do with Miami.

Why are they chanting SEC? I couldn't care less about the ACC. Its all about this U.

why even make the effort randy lol

it is probably too early to tell, but anyone else seem to think Marve has a little too much happy feet in him? Hopefully, he will learn to stay in the pocket a little longer.

yeah he was totally spooked at the end there.

To all the gator fans, enjoy your win. Deep down you know you were worried for three quarters. This little freshman team stayed toe to toe with your team and were it not for a couple of critical mistakes you would not have had the 9 points you enjoyed for most of the game. Even then you needed a bad call to get back into the game. Too bad, UF stopped playing us years ago. Seeing how they had not beaten Miami since 1985 can you blame them!

I like that half a** handshake Randy gave Urban Cryer...dat coward was trying to run up the score!!!

I don't blame Marve at all. Nix did a terrible job. He was way too predictable with his play calling and it looked like he called the same 5 plays all game. Like I said in an earlier post, Nix called a scared game.

Hopefully they learn from this. I was very much encouraged for the future however.

Ya'll, we lost but I am damn proud of this team.

We all should be.

Stupid referees on that call they overturned.

He didn't even have possssion of the ball.

That did us in.

Anyways, very proud of the way this team play.

Hey lets be honest, we knew this would be a tough game. We would have to play nearly perfect football to beat the gators at this point considering where both of our programs are. But what I think we can take away from this is that we have a young team but a damn good young team that will be memorable in only a few years. And who knows after seeing the way they played tonight, maybe even sooner. Keep the faith "U" supporters. We'll be there soon enough. And to the gator fans, stop running away from playing us every year. You're starting to sound like Notre Dame. U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know we want these guys to win right now but they're young and lookd it in the 4th quarter. Nix needs to step his game up hopefully 2 weeks is enuff for him to get the o goin not sure i got the faith in his ablities though. Marve didnt fumble or throw a interception he's gonna get better they all are. We're gonna be alright

I agree with the sentiment that there is definitely a different mentality on this squad versus last year. Last year, this team would have quit by the 2nd quarter. Great job defense, the final score does not give you guys credit. Coach Nix you are on the clock.

Poor overturn of a call made by 2 officials, adamantly. But the number 1 reason we lost was the poor offensive game plan. If youre not coming to attack and score then why play? Its just a mtter of time until you lose. There was no will to in in that game plan. Nix came from Ga Tech, and what the hell did they do on offens while he was there? Calvin Johnson could make Cam Cameron look good.

Again, chicken poop playcalling and a crucial bad overturn costs us this game. One more year and we will be competing for championshiops...

You know, like the 5 the real U already have.

Two things that bothered me about the game:
1. Tebow seemed to fumble the ball into the endzone and was called down. Very strange.

2. I am absolutely dumbfounded that the video review of the 40yd catch that was ruled out of bound was overturned. Now, I agree that the elbow appears to be inbound. However, there is absolutely no way that anyone could draw conclusive evidence to establish possession and overturn the call on the field. That single call completely changed the dynamic of the game. Very unfortunate - both as a Canes fan and as a college football fan.

Why are they chanting SEC?

The Canes offense is BRUTAL. Just Brutal. No offense whatsoever. They need a 50 yard field goal to even put ANY points up.

Is exactly the game I said. Close first half and second half the Gators pull away, cover the spread. The Gators left about 11+ points on the board including a lucky safety rather than a TD and a TD pass called back.

You never felt this was a game. That the Canes were going to do something on O. The D coach had a good gameplan but their head coach and Nix just blew.

you know...funny sh!- happens in this life...Canes might win enough games and gayturds might lose enough games that we meet in a bowl game at the end of the season...I mean, they didn't open up until the 4th quarter on a young defense that was probably tired and over/under reacting. Tebow didn't look like superman for 3 quarters and some change so if I were (and THANK GOD I'm not) a gayturd fan i wouldn't be screamin NC lock.

Between the refs and Nix non play calling. He only went deep one time. All the receivers and play makers. we gave up 9 points on special teams. I'm proud of the young Hurricanes. Shannon gave Nix the look, fix it or you're gone. We put up a good fight. Fla. was scared and Spence played a good game and what a hit on James (25).

Nix better develop this guy. At this point though I have no confidence in Nix. How many run up the gut plays for a yard and a half were there?

I like Marve's toughness. The D is going to be excellent as long as the Offense can keep them on the sidelines for just a little longer the rest of the season.

James getting hurt may be a blessing in disguise for the offense. But I do hope he is alright. Never want to see anybody get injured.

Patrick Nix was terrible at GT. I don't see this team being anything but mediocre as long as he is the offensive coordinator. Defense played a great game but got tired. 2 & 1 and can't get a 1st down?
This guy played Reggie Ball for 4 years at Tech. His offense is boring and predictable. It will be a long season again.

Speaking of the Canes offense, the Gator D isnt that special and they made them look like world beaters. The Gator D is just ok. The Canes need an offense and are AT LEAST 2 years away from making any serious ACC title talk. You cant win with that offense until they can bring in some kind of playmakers.

Nix lost the game for the Canes

Two things that impressed me:
1. The defense is fantastic. The young guys really did a great job, even though there were a few mistakes in the fourth quarter. Sean Spence looks to be a monster.

2. Robert Marve. I really think that there would have been a different outcome had we trusted Marve to throw the ball early.

Canes fans guess who was calling the game ? S E C refs. enough said.

Randy Shannon needs to find an offensive coordinator or he will not be the coach of this team in 2 years despite the talent. Nix is to conservative with his play calling. Miami has great players that are not being allowed to show case their talent. The hell with being young, let the kids play like they know how. The Defense was great tonight!!! The future is bright for the Defense, but the offensive needs a better play caller. Nix proved tonight that he is not the right guy for this job!!! Bring back the old offensive scheme, Please!! Gary Stevens where are you?????

Refs were horrible.

Marve was a freshman (and played like Kyle Wright)

Nix sucks.

Defense was great for 3 qtrs.

woulda, shoulda, coulda ....

U done us proud ...

Patrick Nix is just awful...Nice moral victory, when we could have realistically won this game.

But all the coaching staff was trying to do was make this one look close. Bullcrap, throw the ball!!!!! Stop running the ball, let Marve throw!!!!

Man, Nix is terrible!!!!

One upside...our players played their azzes off...period.

in all kinds of weather
we stick together

Plz Plz dont compare Marve to that other name you mention i dont think i can take that

Pleased with the energy, effort, and defense (they were just on the field too long). Only gripe about the D is that UF picked up our pass rush a lot better in the 2nd half and it didn't seem like we made any adjustments.

Now...sigh...same old story on Offense and Special Teams. Pannunzio may need to go...same type of breakdowns and uninspired play as last year.

VERY disappointed in Nix - very unimaginative and conservative play calling. I understand you have a Frosh QB but, c'mon, can we see some play-action, mis-direction, and screen passes!?!?! I just don't understand why he continues to handcuff the team by calling such a vanilla and conservative offensive game. He's gotta' go too if this doesn't improve...

The biggest downfall to the Canes are their coaches (not including Young). They have a head coach playing NOT TO WIN and just not get blown out and they have an offensive coordinator that called the worst game I have ever seen. EVER! That Gator defense isnt that good and they made them look like the 85 Bears.

or that other joker that plays at Baylor LET the Nix BAshin begin GO!

Late in the 3rd, you got to let Marve THROW IT. I hate the 4th qtr 17 points, but the D didn't have much left. They did not quit, though.

No big minuses in this game. I'm not into moral victories but Herbstriet had some nice things to say about the program.

As for you Gators, no it wasn't a 56-3 massacre, but you were in control. Great team. Anyone who follows CFB knows we have to root for you to do some good things this year. You did it , that's it. I'm glad I don't have to live with you the next 5 years.

How many holding calls did the refs miss? Not impress with Fla.

The was a WUSS coaching job by the head coach. Coaching scared. Attack them. Punch them in the mouth. Throw a pass more than 3 yards. You coached scared and you got punked at the end because the offense did nothing all game. Scared coaching. It better not be a preview for the rest of the year.

RazorCane - agree 100%: Nix is on the clock.

FernandoR - you're dead on: why show up if you're not going to attack? Only a matter of time before you lose if you play like that.

Man, Nix just may not have the balls to be an OC at this level. He's been real bad...

Two games were played today between U of F versus U of M:
1. One game was insignificant for either the ACC or SEC or for a major bowel game during New Years.
2. The other is more consequential for the next 5-10 years. That is for the recruiting in south and central Florida. In my opinion the "U" is going to continue to make major advances in this area and there is nothing that Meyer can do about that no matter how many times he tries to run up the score against unranked opponents

I understand wantin to call plays to your strengths which wasnt much tonite, but dont you have to be able to adapt if something isnt workin before you become predictable thats the key word thats gonna be mentioned alot.

Seems like Nix wants to turn us into "3 yards and a cloud of dust"...except we only get 1 yard and it's 3 and out...

Great defense, miserable offensive playcalling. Loved both QB's, unfortunately, Nix never gave them a chance. Looooooooong season ahead.
