Gameday blog: UF 26, Canes 3 (F)

I'll be going down to the field with five minutes to play to get postgame quotes. I'll be back afterward to update you on what I find out.

FOURTH QUARTER
> Another questionable call by officials gives Florida a first and goal on the 3 after an incomplete pass to Percy Harvin is ruled pass interference on Randy Phillips. On third and goal, Florida finall scores on a 3-yard run with 13:39 left. UF 16, UM 3
> I think we'll finally get so UM's offense get a little more aggressive here now that UM is down by two touchdowns.
> And Louis Murphy -- Mr. Talker -- caps another long UF scoring drive -- 95 yards on 5 plays -- with 20-yard touchdown reception. This one looks like its over. UF 23, UM 3.

THIRD QUARTER
> Great start for UM on the opening series of the second half -- a three and out with lots of pressure on Tim Tebow.
> How about Patrick Nix. Two called timeouts on UM's opening possession of the second half and an earful for Robert Marve and the offense. Not sure you want to jump on the guys. They're playing well. How do you feel about it?
> Another good stop by Miami's defense on UF's second possession after the Gators picked up a pair of first downs. Too bad UM couldn't capitalize on offense.
> Tight end Anthony Hernandez comes through for the Gators with a big 38-yard catch and run to move UF into UM territory. Can the Canes defense stiffen?
> After further review, the Canes get -- well you know. Carl Moore's catch down the sideline gets overturned, giving UF possession at the UM 5. We go to the fourth quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
> Miami caps a 16-play, 42-yard drive with a nice long field goal by Matt Bosher. Gators 7, Canes 3.
> How bout those Northwestern Bulls? UM freshman linebacker Sean Spence comes through with a huge sack of Tim Tebow on third down. Tebow tried to throw the stiff arm. Spence wasn't having it.
> And as promised, we see freshman quarterback Jacory Harris with 10:39 left in the second quarter. Randy Shannon said he would play in the first half. Mark it off. He's in.
> Jacory's first drive picks up a first down but fizzles when his pass falls harmlessly to the ground behind the UF secondary. I wonder if we'll see him again this half.
> The Gators outgained UM 69 to 49 in the first half, but UM won the time of possession battle 8:55 to 6:05... a key if the Canes are going to stay in the game.
> Huge play by Tim Tebow this time on third and long. He scrambles, avoids the rush and finds Deopnte Thompson at the UM 41-yard line for a big gain and first down. Florida eventually punts, but pins UM inside its own 1-yard line with 4:17 left.
> UM guard Orlando Franklin makes a bad mistake picking up a penalty for a late hit. It leads to Matt losing 10 yards and Florida's Jeffrey Demps blocking a Matt Bosher punt that gets ruled a safety with :47 seconds left. UF 9, UM 3.
> How about Matt Bosher picking up Brandon James and slamming him to the floor on that kick return. That was funny.
> Maybe Gators receiver Louis Murphy heard some footsteps on that third down drop? Or maybe, he got UM's message.

FIRST QUARTER
> Miami has a rough start. First Ryan Hill falls on his butt in the end zone on the kick return. And then UM's offense falls on its butt. A bad punt by Matt Bosher gives the Gators possession at the UM 35.
> Florida takes all of 1 minute, 34 seconds to cash in with a Tim Tebow to Aaron Hernandez 14-yard touchdown pass. Is the rout just beginning? UF 7, UM 0.
> Safety Anthony Reddick is already piling up the tackles. Nice start for Reddick, who was a freshman All-American and is starting to look he could be UM's best defensive player this season after coming back from a pair of knee injuries.
> After gaining no yards on their first two possessions, Miami finally starts to the move the ball on the ground behind quarterback Robert Marve and running backs Javarris James and Graig Cooper. Marve picks up a first with his legs on third down and again on fourth down to move UM to the Florida 25.

PRE GAME
I'm sitting inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium aka The Swamp two hours before tonight's showdown between the Canes and fifth-ranked Gators. Since I'm pretty sure everyone will be tuned into this one tonight on ESPN at 8 p.m., I'm not going to provide any detailed info on plays during the game.

Miami_hurricanes_logoBut I will be providing notes and thoughts throughout including answering questions and responding to your comments below. After the game, I'll race down to the locker room to grab quotes for the Canes and fill you in later tonight with what I've learned.

> Miami will be wearing white jerseys on white pants. Florida will be wearing blue jerseys on blue pants.

Florida_gators_logo_2> About 15 minutes ago, I was subjected to some serious Gator propaganda -- along with the 50 or so recruits on hand for tonight's game. As the Gators made their way into the stadium tonight as usual (from their bus with a walk across the field into the locker room) they were followed by the recruits down the middle of the field while a video was blaring music and girls shouting 'It's Great to Be A Florida Gator.' The recruits, with family members, are now sitting in the first three rows behind the end zone that reads Florida. They'll be sitting there all night to watch this one.

I know a lot of people feel this game could affect recruiting between the schools. The truth is, Miami and Florida aren't battling head to head over a lot of the recruits here tonight. The fact Miami was able to win the recruiting war despite going 5-7 almost negates the fact these days winning really affects a recruits decision. I think what plays a bigger role for kids nowadays is the fact so many freshmen are playing right away at Miami. In the grand scheme, as long as Miami doesn't get absolutely embarrassed tonight, this game will probably mean absolutely nothing when it comes to recruiting.

I'll be back before kickoff. Feel free to leave me your questions below.

How about that offense?

3 points.
140 total yards.
1.6 yards per run.
3.6 per pass.

All this against a defense that was BRUTAL last year. Michigan had like 700 yards of total offense and 40 points.

Encouraging, Encouraging and even more Encouraging. First of well great performance all around for the U. Very Encouraging. This team is on the rise. Very young, but what a encouraging performance. I know we losed by 23 but it's the way we losed. First of all we must improve special teams play (overall) second of all we got to get off the field on 3rd downs. We were aggresive on first and second down then got passive on third downs. Third we got to get more vertical in the passing game. Way too much horizontal stuff. We put to much pressure on the passer by only letting him pass on third down. Please pass more on first down. P S start Sean Spence he is a player!!!!

I think Marve has the talent and tenacity it takes to be a real good quaterback. I only hope his offensive coordinator steps up his play calling, because, although not completely terrible, it was below average. Also, I remember Kyle Wright's first game...it was against Fla. State, and for a first game, he actually looked like he was going to have a great career. Obviously that wasn't the case. I hope that Marve doesn't follow in Kyle's footsteps. Young, as a defensive coordinator is a beast! He is leagues ahead of Nix is coaching ability. I agree, Nix has to go. Are there any offensive coordinators out there that may come to the U next year? By the way, Urban is a biatch! He'll get his against one of the better SEC teams, especially if they follow a similar defensive strategy as Young utilized during the first half of this game. Peace!

do U believe those refs? horse colar none call; holdings; bad reversals. just Crap!!!

Anyone else notice the replay when Dixon got the roughing the passer penalty on Tebow, that Tebow kicked at Doxon's hand with his cleat? What kind of jackass thing is that to do? Where does that fit in with his religous background? Classless.

credit to the young U defense this yr and yrs to come...gaturds are overrated...and will get smacked by the boyz from georgia..........espn are haters and always will be....marve needs to play all game for a confidence builder.

"Worried deep down for 3 quarters"??? No, worried on the surface for 3 quarters, but in the end, the better team won.

The Gators were favored by 2 touchdowns, and in the end easily beat the Canes. But Cane fans, you have a lot to be proud of, they played GREAT on defense.

Who knows next time, but this year is our time.
Go Gators!

If you told me we would hold The Gator to 26, I would have said I'm $500 richer (instead of $500 poorer).

Just let the QB's throw it!!!! What did we have to lose at 9-3 midway through the 3rd???

COKECANES IS A F- LOSER WITH NO LIFE! DUDE GET A GIRL OR SOMETHING...GO BACK TO YOUR GATOR CLAUSE AND MINGLE WITH YOUR BUDDIES.

alright, c'mon. I don't like the gators, but Tebow is a classy guy. I didn't see the cleat thing, and if he did, I agree, he shouldn't have done it. But, by far, he is a good kid. Alright, enough said. Props to the Defense and the defensive coordinator, Young. To a smaller degree, but still worthy of some props, Marve and Harris. The losers of this game, Nix and receiver #85 for U.M. What is his name? Lance Legget??? Is #85 a new kid? If he is, I might let him slide, if he's an upper classman, I say put him with the scout team. His drops were unacceptable! the U definitately needs to nix the Nix. Can someone start a website?

Good job, Marc.

This defense is amazing...Nix has got to improve or else he will be out by the end of the year.

Hey Randy Shannon im not busy for the next two weeks i think i could have done as good a job as Nix maybe. HB dive right , Hb dive left , short 3yd pass i got it.

Patrick Nix was tutored by Chan Gailey. Enough said! Fire Nix and bring back the U.

am i alone in thinking #85 was the MVP of this game, for U.F.? Or maybe it was Nix. Don't kid yourselves, the U is not back. Although, the talent is back, with play calling like this (on offense) we're a longs way away. Luckily, the ACC, in all honesty, sucks and thus, Miami has a chance.

Did anyone see how well.... excuse me I mean how bad WF played today?

I am not worried about this game, it means nothing trust me. I am very happy with the Bill Young and his defense. They gave Teblow trouble all night and some of those players that gave him trouble where freshman.

I think Marve looked good. I think both he and Harris will get better with time. I am still in awe in Bosher body slamming James not once not twice but three times. I honestly think we have a good chance of running the tables on the ACC. The key is developing Marve, Harris and the rest of the new talent we have. I am stoked about this season. It's all about the U no matter what.

Regardless this wasn't a blow out like UF fans thought it was. If anything this game put a spotlight on UF's weakness. I don't see UF even competing for a national title spot this season.

Randy already has the fence around south florida mark my words don't even think about it.

What is it that Shannon saw in Nix that he liked so much? He didn't call a very good game at all. He made a couple of adjustments, but nothing that helped us put up points.

This guy is not creative and he doesn't take chances downfield.

Great effort by these kids today...they've got tons of heart. If we can score points, we can win the ACC.

Here's my two cents on the matter:

First of all, that was a great college atmosphere. It wouldn't be bad idea for the canes fans to only root for them online or while watching them on TV. Please make it to the football games if you live in the area. It's great for recruits and the players as well. Having that 12th man support is priceless.

I was very proud of the Hurricanes during the first 3 quarters, then come the fourth quarter and I am not sure exactly what happened to the D. Perhaps fatigue played a role. However, I will say that if the defense continues to play at the level they did today, then the ACC needs to watch out.

I've been hearing that the offense was the team's strength, but after today's performance I beg to differ. I wish the coaches wouldn't play so conservatively. They did not test the gators defense by throwing downfield. I hope they let Marve loose against Texas A&M because the guy has a good arm and we have some speed at wide receivers. They need to learn how to play the game at a higher level and the best way to learn is to make mistakes. So, open up the playbook and let them test the opponent's defense by throwning downfield. Marve kept his composure for a freshman and I was very proud of him. This was a great game for the Canes we now know how well the defense can play. Sean Spence was all over the field, I can see why he's playing as a True Freshman.

As for Urban Meyer, what a character! I am glad that Randy Shannon gave him a quick handshake and moved on.

The Canes grew right before my eyes. The future looks great for the Canes and I hope the recruits realize that being part of the Hurricanes class this year and the years to come will mean that they'll be part of something special and will be winning championships.

There were a few questionable calls on the referees part and there was a holding on the touchdown run by Percy Harvin which happened right in front of the officials and they didn't call it.

By the way kudos to Bill Young on a great game plan. I like him as our DC. I just wish that Patrick Nix would get just as creative on the offensive side of the ball.

My MVP of the ball game for the Hurricanes was Matt Bosher. He was great tonight and saved a few touchdown runs.

The Gators did what they had to do and now we need to regroup and get ready for the Aggies.

Why put Jacory Harris into this game? Shannon and Nix did more to break Marve's rythum than anything Florida did.

Looked like coker calling the plays on offense, sorry it just did, afraid. All the young wide receivers, good young qtback and you run right into a stacked line over and over 65-70 % of all the plays were wasted calls. It hurt because it made the gator defense look good but man did it make nix look bad.

Good point on Hurricanes Post Game....this game was like the Super Bowl, where the Giants were hanging in when noone gave them a chance.

IMO the only difference....UM could run the ball. If we would've moved the ball with our run, we would've won the game.

Randy, please bring back the PRO style offense!! That offense made the "CANES". It show cased the TE, FB coming out of the back field to catch a pass for long gains, and a prolific passing game to the wide out. I don't need to mention the running game. As a postive results of the others I mentioned earlier, the running game was one of the best in the nation. Take a look at USC offensive. They did not change to the spread offense (like most have), and they still are one of the best teams in the country. It time to get back to the grass roots of the "U". If you don't, you will loose future recruits with the scheme you have now!!!

With that said, I must commend the TEAM for their effort and heart they showed on the field tonight. You guys have what it takes to be champions. Keep your heads-up and play with the same heart and effort in your next game and you will come home with a victory.

The game plan also hurts the confidence of the O line from here on out probably makes them feel bad and it was not their fault the defense was stacked against the run. It was all about Nix that loss. Now the Canes may have lost if they would have tried to win from play one but we will never know.

Bosher did good, but don't forget his botched punt. So he's not my mvp. I'd give the MVP to Bill Young. Any offensive coordinators on the rador that U.M. may be interested in. As long as Nix is in, the U will not be back completely. Beside, as Nix himself has awknowledged his heart is at GT, where he would love to coach one day. This guy is not a U of M at heart he needs to go please!

A REALISST IS BACK...

QUICK THINGS I WANT TO GET OFF MY CHEST...

WHY IS SHARPTON PLAYING LINEBACKER AND NOT D LINE? HE IS TO BIG AND SLOW.

NIX IS OBVIOUSLY GONE AFTER THIS YEAR.

WHY TAKE OUT MARVE WHEN HE IS JUST STARTING TO GET COMFORTABLE?

IF SHANNON IS GOING TO PLAY FRESHMEN WHY NOT PLAY THEM ALL? COOKIE BUCHANON? ARTHUR BROWN? FUTCH?

GET PATRICK HILL OFF THE FIELD! HE LOOKS LIKE A KID THAT WOULD BE ON A DIII SCHOOL?

LASTLY WE STILL HAVE A BUNCH OF BAD RECRUITS STILL PLAYING FROM THE COKER ERA, AND I HATE TO SAY THIS BUT THE STREAK IS OVER THIS YEAR OF DRAFTING A MIAMI PLAYER IN THE FIRST ROUND. THATS HOW BAD THESE UPPER CLASSMEN ARE.

MANNY - please start pressing Randy on Patrick Nix and why his game plans are soooo conservative? What role does Randy play in developing the offensive game plan every week?

The only aspect that will hold Miami back this year will be Nix's terrible O.

Canesjunkie,

With all due respect, I disagree with your assessment. The problem wasn't that the hurricanes weren't able to run the ball. The real problem was Patrick Nix was afraid of letting Marve and the WRs loose.

If Patrick Nix let Marve and the receivers loose and they make some good plays downfield or down the middle of the field, then you no longer have an eight man box. If you no longer have an eight man box, that means you have man to man blocking and a man to man blocking situation, I would give the nods to the Hurricanes. If that were the case, I promise you it would have been a different ball game.

Tonight as it was most (if not all) of last year, the offense played NOT to lose as opposed to playing to win. Patrick Nix needs to STOP BEING CONSERVATIVE and let the kids go out there and play and allow them to make mistakes.

the first round draft streak is definately over. Does anyone know of any offensive coordinators on the radar that the U can start looking at for next year?

canatic:

I don't disagree with you. Its two schools of thought...the Giants are conservative, they take shots downfield, but they are primarily a running team.

I agree with you, we needed to throw the ball downfield. If a team challenges your QB to beat them, you need to take the shot downfield. Nix better get wise to this or we are going to see 8 in the box all season.

EAT A PENNNNNIS MIAMI!!!!!!!!!

the worst replay call i've ever seen!

A Realisst:

I thought the same thing about the upper classmen. Reddick and Cook played well, but I'd rather not see the rest of them again. Play the freshmen, let them take their lumps. They are the core of the team.

I do think tonight we earned respect at least, we did not get embarrised\

Canesfan,

I can't argue with your pick for Bill Young, but my thing is Bill Young wasn't on the field...:). Yes, he had a botched punt that let to the first touchdown, but he saved at LEAST 2 touchdowns which more than make up for that botched punt. Moreover, if he didn't add that long field goal in the first quarter Miami would have laid an egg.

Again I like the Bill Young pick.

P.S. I have a feeling that if Patrick Nix continues to be that conservative in his play calling, he will not be around for long.

1969 Florida grad, and I use my real name!!

First--Miami scared the Hell out of me and I really don't care how well a COLLEGE coach COACHES because it's all about recruiting and it appears your guy can do that.

Now maybe I'm way too objective to be a FANatic, but I Love the University of Florida and I'm honest enough to say that the last 2 minutes were garbage. NO reason to be throwing the ball and for any FLORIDA grad----and I really don't care about FANaticS who went to Nova and never matriculated on Gainesville---who can HONESTLY say that he or she would not be raising Hell if the situation was reversed, Well, I'll just come right out and say it--You're lying.

I hate Miami--the football program with a passion, BUT I would hope I would have enough class and BRAINS if I was the coach to realize you CAN NOT make up for 23 years of fraustration with a last second field goal.

I better not hear any Florida grads COMPLAINING if situation is reversed BECAUSE NOW we deserve it.

Miami, Great game, the first 51 minutes. My blood pressure went from 110/72 to 145/92 ACTUALLY TOOK IT!!

Good Luck rest of the season--Beat FSU!!

I wish they could get rid of Nix NOW. He is horrible. I like how our players played but we did not have a chance with Nix running our offense. I hope the CEO cans him soon... Sooner the better. He is a joke. Way Way out of his league. This was worse play calliing then the OU game last year. I don't think we will ever be but mediocure untill we get a real OC.

Patrick nix lost this game. Robert marve is gonna be a stud qb. The type of qb who wins titles. Nothing seemed to faz this kid nothing against harris but he should sit for 3 years while marve plays. 85 is leonard hankerson a sophmore wr whose nerves got to him at times. he also made a couple very good catches in the game. This team could win the acc but not if there offense if run on 1st down run on second, throw on third and long. that will keep comp pct down and get your qb killed.

Nix sucked last year and so far he sucks this year. I can only hope he gets to suck somewhere else next year. We have infinitely more potential on offense, and the kids are being handcuffed by an offensive gameplan that a 2-year-old could defend. How many times do you need to run into an 8-man box before you try taking some shots to open up the running game? I don't care how physical you are upfront. Even if you pancake the entire D-line, there are still 3 linebackers standing there. 60 minutes of wasted opportunities. Nix has to go.

Heyyyyyy Miami, I wanna know ooo ,if you'll be my female dog!!!

Miami...it's gonnna be a BLOODBATH!!!!!

Miami..you suck, just get over it. You will be 5-7 FOREVER!!!!

Don't know that much about Miami program since moving to the Carolinas from Boca in 2002---How much do you guys think losing that running back that early impacted the play calling?/ Is he that good?? I'm not being a Wise A%%, I'd like your opinions.

OH ONE LAST THING I FORGOT....

WHY ARE BABY JAMES AND COOP DOMINATING COLLEGE FOOTBALL?? ARE THEY OVER RATED??????? LET ME KNOW

Dont they have newspapers in Gville.

Lou Vales,

I want to thank you for your honest assessment of what happened in the game tonight. I give you mad props for that.

Needless to say that Urban Meyer is CLASSLESS. Adding a field goal at the end of a ball game wasn't necessary. If he were trying to make a point tonight, I think he did so loud and clear. The point he made was that he has no class.

Defense looked real good tonight. Spence is gonna be the next great linebacker out of the U. But the offense really has me worried. Marve looked good but they couldn't find that extra play to push them into the end zone. Not too great of a game called by the offensive coordinator. Either way, I think that we need to force turnovers on D and special teams and take them to the house. Make stuff happen in other areas of the game and it will energize the whole team. We proved that we can hang with most teams in the country tonight.

Javaris James is the second best receiver on the team. I think a lot of the gameplan was built around James, but I don't think his injury made a huge difference.

Personally, I like Cooper more and I think he's the game breaker of the group. Our offensive gameplan sucked, that was the issue. We should've thrown the ball. UF challenged Marve to beat them and we handcuffed him.

Officiating was not great for either side. But the call on the catch where they ruled his elbow was down was the worst and UM really lost their momentum on that play. Turning point of the game right there, even if the offense couldn't complete a pass over 7 yards.

We can talk all day & night about the X's, O's and play calling... but if Marve was allowed a tune up game against charleston, the Miami Hurricanes would have done much better, and probably would have won the game.

I blame UM administration for bad timing and badly handling the Marve suspension. The QB is just getting warmed up, and it's a shame it had to be against #5 Ranked UF Gators ! ... Otherwise, they should've started the very capable & talented True Freshman Jacory Harris.

That said, UM will win a National Championship with these Freshman in the next few years. NO Doubt !
