Gameday blog: UF 26, Canes 3 (F)

I'll be going down to the field with five minutes to play to get postgame quotes. I'll be back afterward to update you on what I find out.

FOURTH QUARTER
> Another questionable call by officials gives Florida a first and goal on the 3 after an incomplete pass to Percy Harvin is ruled pass interference on Randy Phillips. On third and goal, Florida finall scores on a 3-yard run with 13:39 left. UF 16, UM 3
> I think we'll finally get so UM's offense get a little more aggressive here now that UM is down by two touchdowns.
> And Louis Murphy -- Mr. Talker -- caps another long UF scoring drive -- 95 yards on 5 plays -- with 20-yard touchdown reception. This one looks like its over. UF 23, UM 3.

THIRD QUARTER
> Great start for UM on the opening series of the second half -- a three and out with lots of pressure on Tim Tebow.
> How about Patrick Nix. Two called timeouts on UM's opening possession of the second half and an earful for Robert Marve and the offense. Not sure you want to jump on the guys. They're playing well. How do you feel about it?
> Another good stop by Miami's defense on UF's second possession after the Gators picked up a pair of first downs. Too bad UM couldn't capitalize on offense.
> Tight end Anthony Hernandez comes through for the Gators with a big 38-yard catch and run to move UF into UM territory. Can the Canes defense stiffen?
> After further review, the Canes get -- well you know. Carl Moore's catch down the sideline gets overturned, giving UF possession at the UM 5. We go to the fourth quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
> Miami caps a 16-play, 42-yard drive with a nice long field goal by Matt Bosher. Gators 7, Canes 3.
> How bout those Northwestern Bulls? UM freshman linebacker Sean Spence comes through with a huge sack of Tim Tebow on third down. Tebow tried to throw the stiff arm. Spence wasn't having it.
> And as promised, we see freshman quarterback Jacory Harris with 10:39 left in the second quarter. Randy Shannon said he would play in the first half. Mark it off. He's in.
> Jacory's first drive picks up a first down but fizzles when his pass falls harmlessly to the ground behind the UF secondary. I wonder if we'll see him again this half.
> The Gators outgained UM 69 to 49 in the first half, but UM won the time of possession battle 8:55 to 6:05... a key if the Canes are going to stay in the game.
> Huge play by Tim Tebow this time on third and long. He scrambles, avoids the rush and finds Deopnte Thompson at the UM 41-yard line for a big gain and first down. Florida eventually punts, but pins UM inside its own 1-yard line with 4:17 left.
> UM guard Orlando Franklin makes a bad mistake picking up a penalty for a late hit. It leads to Matt losing 10 yards and Florida's Jeffrey Demps blocking a Matt Bosher punt that gets ruled a safety with :47 seconds left. UF 9, UM 3.
> How about Matt Bosher picking up Brandon James and slamming him to the floor on that kick return. That was funny.
> Maybe Gators receiver Louis Murphy heard some footsteps on that third down drop? Or maybe, he got UM's message.

FIRST QUARTER
> Miami has a rough start. First Ryan Hill falls on his butt in the end zone on the kick return. And then UM's offense falls on its butt. A bad punt by Matt Bosher gives the Gators possession at the UM 35.
> Florida takes all of 1 minute, 34 seconds to cash in with a Tim Tebow to Aaron Hernandez 14-yard touchdown pass. Is the rout just beginning? UF 7, UM 0.
> Safety Anthony Reddick is already piling up the tackles. Nice start for Reddick, who was a freshman All-American and is starting to look he could be UM's best defensive player this season after coming back from a pair of knee injuries.
> After gaining no yards on their first two possessions, Miami finally starts to the move the ball on the ground behind quarterback Robert Marve and running backs Javarris James and Graig Cooper. Marve picks up a first with his legs on third down and again on fourth down to move UM to the Florida 25.

PRE GAME
I'm sitting inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium aka The Swamp two hours before tonight's showdown between the Canes and fifth-ranked Gators. Since I'm pretty sure everyone will be tuned into this one tonight on ESPN at 8 p.m., I'm not going to provide any detailed info on plays during the game.

Miami_hurricanes_logoBut I will be providing notes and thoughts throughout including answering questions and responding to your comments below. After the game, I'll race down to the locker room to grab quotes for the Canes and fill you in later tonight with what I've learned.

> Miami will be wearing white jerseys on white pants. Florida will be wearing blue jerseys on blue pants.

Florida_gators_logo_2> About 15 minutes ago, I was subjected to some serious Gator propaganda -- along with the 50 or so recruits on hand for tonight's game. As the Gators made their way into the stadium tonight as usual (from their bus with a walk across the field into the locker room) they were followed by the recruits down the middle of the field while a video was blaring music and girls shouting 'It's Great to Be A Florida Gator.' The recruits, with family members, are now sitting in the first three rows behind the end zone that reads Florida. They'll be sitting there all night to watch this one.

I know a lot of people feel this game could affect recruiting between the schools. The truth is, Miami and Florida aren't battling head to head over a lot of the recruits here tonight. The fact Miami was able to win the recruiting war despite going 5-7 almost negates the fact these days winning really affects a recruits decision. I think what plays a bigger role for kids nowadays is the fact so many freshmen are playing right away at Miami. In the grand scheme, as long as Miami doesn't get absolutely embarrassed tonight, this game will probably mean absolutely nothing when it comes to recruiting.

I'll be back before kickoff. Feel free to leave me your questions below.

yeah, the ruling where he was holding the ball and his elbow hit the ground in-bounds was clearly a bad call. I mean how can landing in-bounds be ruled in-bounds? And why can't we tackle their receivers before they catch the ball? What is there a rule against that?

Lost but looked damn good, the future is now!

Gosh i'll hold back on the complaining... but seriously i am very proud of the canes for giving it all their best. If these guys were freshmen just imagine them as juniors...

Keith,

Please bro... let's not bring up this suspension thing. It doesn't matter if Marve played the whole game against Charleston Southern, as long as Nix is calling the game the way he is now the result would have still been the same.

Mike,

We can blame the referees all we want, but the one person I blame is NIX unless that's the way Shannon wants him to call the plays. Then, Shannon will shoulder all the blame.

I hope Urban Meyer is still there the next time we play UF.

Our freshmen are great...I think we should all feel pretty good about the way we played tonight.

The Bad thing about it from my perspective and some Florida friends that I've called--is that Shannon can almost use this as a recruiting tool. The extra points mean nothing to an 18 year old kid, but if you can turn that into something along the lines of "Next time with your help, we'll be pouring it on".

I hated it when Spurrier did it, I hated it when Miami did it, I hate it when ANYBODY does it. It wasn't necessary, and if you feel the NEED then put yout 2nd string QB in and let him do it.

In Urban's first year, little David Shula had his 1st team in there running it up and he lost one of his best players--Prothro--to a leg injury with a 28 point lead over Florida. It just comes back to bite you in the butt, maybe not right away, BUT eventually!!

Lou,
you are a very admirable guy. I'm just curious...what did you major in?? Not that it has any bearing on anything, just curious.

team of the future = Miami
this year's freshman will win a title before there time is over!
tebow's future? who knows! gimmick QB's dont succeed in the NFL.
the wr's for florida? what will they do in the NFL?
nothing because there a bunch of smurfs!!!
yes the turds won the game, did they dominate a inexperienced team at home? NO THEY DID NOT!

Nix better get the Offense fixed soon!

With this offense we will have trouble beating the likes of BC & GT.Saw both today, good defenses and not shoddy on offense.

Nix sucks and we saw clearly Shannon was really mad at him...I wonder what he said to him just before the end of the game...Young didn't look very happy either...But over all YONG DID A DECENT JOB...

I am proud to be a Cane, even though we lost I like what I saw from the team. Offensively we could have done better, still have the drops from the drops from the receivers, but I don't see why we can't win out the rest of our games. Great job tonight Canes!

Shannon was livid cause he knows we gave the turds a gift!
Recruits should take notice of the youth movement and join now!
the freshman class is so young but play with passion & heart!
The U will be back!

An Honest Analysis of the Game:
I know there are a lot of negative things going on about the game, but heres how i see it...

1. Marve - a decent start to this kid's career..I think the comparisons to kyle and kirby are unfair this early in the career. More than anything, hes a competitor. Unlike other recent QBs, he fights for the extra yard and has a heck of an arm. The receivers dropped a lot of passes.

2. Defense - the talent is there, but they looked inexperienced. They played hard, but they were out of their spots, they missed coverages, and they had some bad penalties. Overall, I think this unit will get better as the season progresses, but man, there is some talent there. Sean Spence is going to be a superstar.

3. O-Line - Probably the most disappointing group to me today. They were suppose to handle this gator front, and there was nothing there. Even when we had 2, 3 wide receiver sets, our O-line couldn't handle their front 4. Cooper and the backs were given very, very little room to run today. They are big, but they need to do a better job.

4. Play Calling - I was not a big fan of the play calling today, but I must say that it has been better than last year. At least we are doing a little bit of play action and marve has a cannon, so i expect them to open it up a little more. I was mad at Nix too, until I looked at how well our receivers were covered. The plays were called to air it out, but there was nobody open. I do not understand putting Jacory in the game though, especially when Marve just found his rhythm.

5. Refs - ummm, yea...some of the calls were really bad...i will leave it at that...

There is a lot to look forward to in the future though. I think are guys are talented enough to keep up with anyone. With a Mediocre ACC, I think we have a real shot to do some damage. Give this group some time to mature and we may shock some people by the end of the season.

Dear Lyquid Enigma, My wife of 32 years would be surprised to hear you call me admirable, maybe crotchety. I loved my time at Florida and parlayed it into a great life. Was an English major who was planning to go into education, but NEVER did.

I just hate GARBAGE!!! That's why I refuse to call my self a FANatic of ANY teams I really care about. I think FANaticS are people who are BLINDLY LOYAL to causes or people and they tend to congregate in caves.

I love the University of Florida and take 5 road trips a year, but when someone associated with Florida does something DUMB, I will say it, not with malice, but with honesty.

Didn't like the Flop, didn't like Howard's last minute field goal, didn't like JJ's rout of ND and couldn't stand Spurrier running it up against the likes of an EARLY South Florida or an outmanned South Carolina.

Why do it!!! Want to prove your tough and good--Run It Up on Southern Cal. Then I'll be impressed.

Urban Meyer will get his ass handed to against SEC teams and I'm gonnnaaaaaa love it! The U must nix the Nix!

The Moore pass was good. The review was clear, possession and then the elbow hit. The Harivn Pass? WHy is there a controversy when it hit him in the hands? Stop whining Canes. Gators beat you fair and square.

What garbage the play calling was. If your going to lose go out throwing. I think we only had about 3 throws down field. Spread the defense out. We have to get rid of Nix. Let Marve throw the ball. I see we have receivers that cant catch again. Looks like another 7-5 season, and things dont look good for Shannon. Nice guy and all, but the 2 quarterback system doesnt work. Its one or the other.

this comment goes oUt to all of U hating on nix - get off the gUy he can't help it that he sUx as an OC!!!!! as far asa coach shannon goes i think he did a great job off having oUr 18 & 19 year old kids ready to play - we simply got beat by a not better bUt more experienced team along with 2 fd Up officiating calls that tUrned the game. im very pleased with the effort - NO LAY DOWN AND QUIT THIS YEAR!!!!! as far as the Upper classmen go most of them probably shoUldnt be on the field (matt patcham comments on this) bUt they played well. offensively we HAVE to open things Up no qUestions. this year we will be perfectly fine so dont jUmp off the bandwagon jUst yet. i sat in the swamp and watched the players on the side line going into the 4th & they were still thinking that they coUld win this game so take that and hold onto it and dont give Up on these kids!!! the one thing that really pissed me off however - Urban meyer kicking that fg - lost all respect for him then. i gUess its not enoUgh to beat a bUnch of 18 year olds bUt lets make sUre we cover the spread doing it!!! coach meyer yoU have a good team bUt yoU are classless!!!

as always GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a feeling that if I started reading the posts on this site, i would see the complaints about the Phillips FG as "running up the score." First of all, I realize that many of you UM fans don't pay much attention to your opponents, but if you bothered to look at our stats, you would know that neither of UF's kickers (Phillips or Sturgis) have a prior in-game FG attempt in their careers. So if it comes down to hurting your or Shannon's feelings or having a kicker get actual in-game experience before possibly having to make a kick that actually matters in our SEC schedule, I'm going to have Phillips take that kick every time.

That being said, I'm also not going to be disappointed about the irony of it after Howard Schnellenberger's in-your-face field goal late in the 1980 game in a 31-7 victory at Florida Field.

Simply stated, Urban had a very good reason for having Phillips make that kick attempt. If we had taken a timeout or kicked it on second or third down, I might see it differently. Otherwise, get over it.

Clearly, Nix's gameplan was to not get blown out.
Urban's was to run up the score...a fuqqen scoring drive, with a minute left.

URBAN MEYER HIT THE LOTTERY WITH TIM TEBOW...

LETS JUST FACE IT.. THAT TYPE OF KID ONLY COMES AROUND ONCE EVERY DECADE.

WE WILL SEE WHAT TYPE OF COACH HE REALLY IS WHEN TEBOW IS GONE.....

TEBOW KNOWS HOW TO WIN AND MAKE EVERY ONE AROUND HIM BETTER.

I HATE THE GATORS LIKE EVERY ONE ELSE BUT THE TRUTH IS THE TRUTH.

Your not wrong "A Realisst," time will tell. But today Tebow IS a Gator.

Go Gators!

I suppose it was the officials that turned your Offense into to a glorified Soccer Club ???

Get the ball inside of the 30 and then start popping off...

excUse U ... Get Used to it

I'm really excited by the progress this team has made in such a short turn around. The coaching this year seems to be alot better this year. Onion will you please let Pat open up his playbook more. These are not Ga Tech kids you don't have to be that dam conservative. Great game I enjoyed seeing that passion at the U again.

funny, these guys are funny...stop worrying..canes will clean house when they learn to trash talk and start kicking some 1 in face..it takes a few weeks to learn to be good trash talker..
