Injury report, Ring of Honor announcement

The University of Miami released its injury report for Saturday's noon kickoff against North Carolina and as usual there were a few surprises.

Marcus_forston_um_mugSafety Vaughn Telemaque has been ruled out with an arm injury, further depleting the secondary and safety spot after the injury to Randy Phillips last week. Starting freshman defensive tackle Marcus Forston, whom coach Randy Shannon told reporters on Tuesday was "simply sore", has been classified as doubtful with an arm injury. And freshman linebacker Jordan Futch (head) is listed as questionable. Last week, we were led to believe defensive end Eric Moncur wouldn't play. He did and had a huge game. So, basically, I'd take these injury reports with lots of caution.

Edgerrin_james> In another report released by the school, athletic director Kirby Hocutt and Shannon have announced the selection of five new members to the UM Football Ring of Honor -- the first time the school has placed new members in it since 1999. So, who is in? Edgerrin James, Jim Kelly, Cortez Kennedy, Jim Otto and Gino Torretta will all be placed in the Ring of Honor during halftime of Miami’s home game against Virginia Tech on Thursday, Nov. 13, at Dolphin Stadium.

“The University of Miami has a football legacy that rivals that of any program in the country, and this group exudes the success and excellence that is synonymous with the U” Hocutt said in the release. “All five inductees have had a great amount of success in life – on and off the football field.”

Jim_kellyThe selection of UM’s Ring of Honor members is determined by the director of athletics and head football coach, in conjunction with an anonymous advisory committee. Criteria used in the selection process include athletic achievements at UM and at the professional level, commitment and loyalty to the continued success of the university and its athletic department and a personal commitment to courage, fortitude, honesty and integrity.

“We have had so many great players play at the University of Miami, and it’s never an easy decision when it comes to adding to our Ring of Honor,” Shannon said in the release. “A tremendous group has been selected for this next induction."

Are there any other Canes you believe deserve to be in the Ring of Honor? The current list includes George Mira, Jim Dooley, Ted Hendricks, Vinny Testaverde, Ottis Anderson, Don Bosseler, Bernie Kosar and Burgess Owens. My first vote would go to Michael Irvin.

first?

LIKE THE SELECTION OF EDGE, HE'S GIVEN BACK SO MUCH TO THE PROGRAM.. WHAT ABOUT RAY RAY?

Thanks for the article Manny. Wow - sooooo many players to choose from but I think M. Irvin would be a very good selection.

Go Canes!

Ring of honor? More like wrap of plastic

SEC teams don't RENT their home field

Love the 8 X 10 "U" at the gate though.

Fish warehouse will be rockin 36,000 saturday. Probably less than that in the heat. 32k will be impressive. Don't count on it fair weather fan base. Even 40k (aintta happenin) sounds like a funeral in that place.

LIFELESS FISH WAREHOUSE

Make sure you stop by the snack stand called Canesrule's Salad Stop. It's very busy.

At least the UM fans that show up to the games have passion and heart. Can't say the same about those bunch of fakes that goto "The Pond." I've never heard a quieter group of 90,000 people in my life. No surprise that you didn't hear their stupid Jaws chant until they were up by 3 touchdowns with 5 minutes left when Miami was there. Everyone in that stadium could smell the fear in the air. Gators fans are the most overrated people in all athletics.

One key to the ring of honor would be support for the university, which makes Irvin a logical selection.

michael irvin needs to be in that group

I wonder if Irvin's off the field trouble has delayed this. Either way, he has payed his dues. He was good enough for the pro hall of fame, he is good enough for the ring.

Hurricanes number one fan!!!!!!!!

FUNNY $HIT!!

Great to see these guys being inducted into the ring. I'm really surprised that Kelly hadn't already been inducted. He's arguably the most accomplished player in the history of the program and he's always been a class guy and has always been back on campus giving advise to QBs e.g. Dorsey. The guy's a HOFer. Same goes for Otto.

Love the new layout too Manny.

No Sean Taylor in the Ring of Honor???

Michael Irvin for sure...his personal problems shouldn't have anything to do with recognition from this program. If there's anyone who lives for the U, its the Playmaker.

Was gametime for Saturday changed to 3:30pm?

Mike was a great player for Da U and in the NFL, and loyal to Da U, so sure Irvin would be fine. He is in the pro football hall of fame, so he's gotta qualify for Da U.

I kinda like Brock Berlin, not necessarily a great qb, but he was undefeated and untied against the GaTurds and Noles, beating them a combined four times, and who can forget the Gaturd clap followed by the throat slit he did after we came from behind, captured for eternity by the nationally televised cameras. And he is a former GaTurd who broke the hearts of so called Gaturd nation.

Alonzo Highsmith, Jerome Brown, Sean Taylor, Steve Walsh, Brett Romberg, Bubba McDowell, Bubba Franks, Ken Dorsey, and when they get older Kellen Winslow, Jr. and jeremy Shockey, not to mention Clinton Portis (bonus points for being from Gainesville and spurning the GaTurds) and Willis McGee. Problem is we have so many players in the league (we are number one with the most NFL'rs 3 years running now) that we have to let them finish their body of work before enshrining them for eternity in football's most fabulous venue, pro or college.

Let me add Benny ("the jet") Blades, Dennis Harrah, Fred ("Swamp Fox") Marion (not only from Canesville but played for 13 years in the NFL), Matt Patchan, Sr. (not!), and Michael Barrow (of course!!!), two national 'ships, stellar NFL career with Super Bowl win, and now Randy's vice general in recruiting and great linebacker coach, and all around good guy. And Danny Miller from Clewiston who sailed the winning field goal from 55 yards against the Gaturds as time expired in 1981 in the Orange Bowl, not to mention, kicking the extra field goal as time expired in Canesville the prior year.

I dont know who that GAY-TURD fan is on here but it was very very quiet in the POND for the first three quarters.

The Playmaker and Ray Ray.

RayRay should be #1 on the list of to-be-inducted Ring of Honor 'Canes. He's one of the two best linebackers of all time (it's hard to argue LT is not the greatest). He's arguably the second greatest defensive player ever. He's a Super Bowl MVP and two-time Defensive MVP. More importantly, he's a great supporter of the U and an even better supporter of the metro Miami community. I think he's arguably the greatest 'Cane ever - despite having no college 'ships and having been on the 2nd most disappointing team ever (Orange Bowl loss to Nebraska in '94/'95). God the Erikson years were frustrating. Not like the Coker demise but pretty bad.
Other sure fire Ring Honorees to be included the next go around are: Ken Dorsey (signal caller of the greatest college team ever), Ed Reed (two-time NFL Defensive MVP), Warren Sapp (Super Bowl champ and NFL Def MVP), and Michael Irvin (HOF, 3 Rings, College champion, and only member on the list that could give LT a run for his money with rolled up Benjamins...).
In about 10 years, let's put Ran-day Shannon in the Ring for his contributions as a championship player, assistant and head coach.

Dorsey and Reed. 2 of the best-ever true canes. Leaders on the field.

REED NEEDS A COUPLE MORE YEARS AS DOES DORSEY.. WHERE IS HE DORSEY PLAYING, AND WHEN WILL HE LEAVE THE NFL TO BE THE QB COACH AT UM????

I SECOND BENNIE BLADES & SEAN TAYLOR.. WHAT A MOTIVATIONAL DAY FOR THE CANES WHEN THE ADD THE TOO EARLY DEPARTED MR. TAYLOR TO THE RING OF HONOR..

JESSE ARMSTEAD? HE HAD A GREAT PRO CARRER

Matt Patchan, Sr. should never be mentioned here again.

Warren Sapp...he's accomplished so much...and he can dance for a big man.

"SEC teams don't RENT their home field"

And they don't sell alcohol there either.

Nor do they have the largest HDTV video system in the United States either.

I can't wait for the Wake Forrest game I have my tickets and will be making the drive from the A. I am stoked

Mandingo
no disrespect intended, but looking at your newest blog picture compared to your old one, looks like you've gained a bit of weight.
here's a simple exercise that you can do to help you with that:
take a 1 minute break from work every hour and do as many stand up-sit downs as you can in that one minute. they're harder than they sound, and by the end of your work day you should have done roughly between 150-200.
you'll thank me later.

manny

who led you to beleive moncur wouldn't play?
rs never said he wouldn't. once again your're just stirring it up. do you think usc fans will want to fire pete carroll, nick holt or steve sarkisian?
maybe usc should put the names back on the jerseys.

Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp (if he had done nothing else, calling Urban Liar a "classless dirtbag" in the national media should qualify him for automatic entry), Ed Reed (inventor of "The U"), Reggie Wayne, but nlike I said, some these guys are still adding to their body of work. Don Latimer, Eddie Edwards tow greats from a bygone era.

MANNY,

ANY BACKGROUND ON THIS NEW CB COMMITT JAMAL REID??

Will the dolphin stadium turf be fixed up for the North Carolina game now that the Marlins are out of the playoffs??

What about big bad jerome brown??

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???
MR. KEN DORSEY AND IN THE FUTURE 80% OF THE CURRENT NFL/UM STARS PLAYERS...REY.L, WILLIS, KELLEN, ED, JEREMY, CLINTON, DEVIN, REGGIE, SANTANA, ADNRE.J, FRANK, VINCE.W, JHONATAN.V, D.J.W., BRANDON, AND MORE TO COME, I.E: CALAIS, ANTRELL, ETC ETC...HAVE IN MIND...SPENCE, MARVE, AND SEVERALL OTHER FROM THE CURRENT UM TEAM...

Jimmy Johnson

It should be extended to coaches

hey manny

it said in your paper today that steve spurrier suspended three players for this weekends game
because of missing class in the spring. do you think their fans are wondering if it is fair to suspend them now? do you think those kids will want to transfer? how come spurrier can't get the offense going? is it because his son is calling the plays?

so now miami fans are nitpicking marve taking a snap with one hand and bosher can't reach the endzone.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THESE GUYS ADDED TO THE RING OF HONOR. MICHAEL IRVIN, DAN MORGAN(ONLY DEF PLAYER TO EVER WIN THE BUTKUS,BEDNERIK,NAGURSKI AWARDS), REGGIE WAYNE(I BELIEVE HE HOLDS THE UM RECORD FOR RECEPTIONS), KEN DORSY THE WINNIEST QB AT UM, ED REED(HOLDS UM INT. RECORD AND NFL DEF. MVP), BENNIE BLADES.

This might be off topic, but with the marlins not going to the playoffs, is the stadium going to have the baseball feild removed and the U in the middle for this weekends game? if anyone knows, i would appreciate it. GO CANES!

manny

pete carroll has lost 9 games in 6 years always to a team he is supposed to beat. he should be fired and repalced by lane kiffin. bob stoops can't win a bowl game. if he doesn't win this year fire him and get dan hawkins from colorodo. he's a winner.

chris

dolphin stadium could not start replacing the dirst infield until 7 days after the marlins were eliminated. next week vs fsu will have grass and the u at midfield.

micheal irvin. ed reed, ken dorsey, j vilma, earl little, dj williams, clinton portis, jeremy shockey, frank gore, santana moss, bubba franks, kellen winslow, late n great sean taylor, bryant mckinnee ( didnt spell that right) vernon carey, warren sapp, ray lewis, dan morgan

Matt Patchan Sr, should be erased from anything dealing with THE U loyalty is more important then love to me.

RAY LEWIS AND MIKE IRVIN!!!!!!!

What the hell does this have to do with anything in the world, you fvcking moron?

Future Ring of Honor: Sapp, Irvin, Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Jesse Armstead, Dorsey and my personal favorite, though obviously highly unlikey...

JEFF FEAGLES baby!!!

There is not enought room in Joe Robbie Stadium for all the deserving players. From 1983 until 2003 they were the most dominant team in the history of college football.

Sean Taylor and Ray Ray!!!

SEC teams don't RENT their home field

Yes you do. You rent it from the taxpayers of your state who had to pay for it.

At least we pay our own way.

Its true, there isn't enough room on the ring of honor.

Sean Spence and Robert Marve are going to be on that one day.

Go Colorado!

My List is as follows:

Ken Dorsey - Hands down, no discussion.
Warren Sapp
Jerome Brown
The Playmaker
Ray Lewis
Bryant McKinnie
Ed Reed

Others in consideration

DJ Williams
Vilma
Shockey
Portis
Andre Johnson
Santana Moss
Dan Morgan
Reggie Wayne
Sean Taylor
Tremain Mack (Just kidding, wanted to make sure you were paying attention...)

Guys who probably will never get in but should have an honorable mention because careers were impacted by injury or worse:

Rusty Meadaris (20 sacks as a Sophomore - Cheap chopblock from Arizona...)
Bratton
Highsmith
Stephen McGuire

For Michale Irvin not to be in there is INSANE,to me he is the greatest Miami Hurricane ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
