Peaceful pregame, fried chicken, jorts and a podcast

GAINESVILLE -- Just wanted to check in with you before tonight's game in The Swamp. I've been here since 5 p.m. Friday and have to say this place has been a lot of fun since I arrived. I've seen hundreds of Canes fans mingling around the crowds of Gators fans down University Ave.

UfSo far, everything has been peaceful. I haven't run into any situations where I've seen any Gator or Canes fans getting overly excited or talking too much trash. This afternoon we ate at the Mellow Mushroom (off University just east of campus) and saw plenty of Canes fans in the place including 790 The Ticket's Jorge Sedano and Jonathan Zaslow, who was wearing a Miami Heat shirt (what else could we expect?).

Last night, after I got a chance to dig in on some barbeque ribs and chicken courtesy of Gators beat writer Joseph Goodman (Joe knows how to cook), I went out with a collection of sports writers including Sun-Sentinel Canes beat writer Shandel Richardson. We tried to get into this rundown place, but got rejected at the door because I was wearing shorts. It's the second time I've caused a little trouble with my dress attire when I've been out with Shandel. Call me sloppy, but this is Gainesville! Not South Beach! There were plenty of other people roaming the streets last night in jorts and t-shirts. And Goodman told me ahead of time it wouldn't be a problem.

Bojangles07As for Shandel, I nearly pissed my pants last night listening to him, Goodman and one of Joe's buddies argue about who has the best fried chicken. Shandel says nobody has anything on Bojangles. Joe says Guthrie's is the best. And Skinny (Joe's friend), says Zaxsby's (there aren't any in South Florida) is the best. I still think Popeye's chicken strips rule. What's your vote?

Anyway, I'm killing some time before kickoff. If you are in Gainesville for the game, share some stories. Or, even if you are back home, tell me where I should be hanging tonight after the game. I'll be sure to leave my shorts and t-shirt at home. I'll make sure Skinny leaves his Superman Tebow shirt on. He's an Alabama fan who is trying to stay undercover.

PS - Joe and I recorded a pregame podcast. It's not College Gameday, but it's me and Joe (your Herald beat writers for the Canes and Gators) giving you our pregame thoughts. Check it out.

Manny, you're the hardest working man in showbiz. Thanks for the podcast.

As for fried chicken, NOTHING beats Lem's BBQ on the south side of Chicago. It's a craphole with bulletproof glass at the counter, but it's the best BBQ you've ever had.

Now, GO CANES!

Manny,

When I'm in Miami its 50/50 I'll visit a Church's Chicken especially if I'm going to a Marlin game. OK here's a comment that I hope does not rub anyone too badly, why can I only find Church's in predominantly "black neighborhoods?"

C-A-N-E-S CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Popeye's chicken is the shiznnnnit!

speaking of chickens. Miami player #12 has some chicken legs.

Holy sh#t i'm excited about this game-i'm stuck in cali near los angeles.gotta admit-the girls are just as hot if not hotter than my florida girls...but this place has no real pashion for football like our great state in fl.i'll be stuck watchin the game w/ my girl tonight-no real bars to watch the game out here either.very lame.here's hoping i won't freak her out when the canes take the field.BTW Manny, Sony's BBQ has the best BBQ sauce to go with great chicken and pulled brisquit.god i miss home.hope if u live their u take advantage and go to the game ya'll.

GO CANES!
TONIGHT THE NATION WILL RESPECT THE U ONCE MORE!!!!

Hey Canesrule you Turd POSEUR!!! Are U hiding from Ike or the Cat 5 that is headed to Canesville at 8 pm tonight to upset the OVERRATED Gators! This just in from The Weather Channel. Before all of you Turd fans run your mouth on how the Turds are the greatest team ever(4 Losses last year, way to defend that NC, good job!!!) I will provide you with FACTS and educate all of you underedumacated UF fans on why you will get beat tonight (Try to read the following and understand I know that it is hard for U all!)

Ok here are the STONE COLD FACTS PEOPLE!!!!From 1981 through 1991, UM defeated the #1 team in the nation 8 straight times, including a kickoff classic win in 1984 over Bo jackson and the Auburn Tigers. How many years will it take UF to beat the #1 team 8 times? We should all hope to live that long. No team has stopped more 20 or more game winning streaks than the "U"(4), not including the obliteration of FSU's (non-losing) streak of home wins at 54 games.

Since that 1985 loss to Florida, the Hurricanes have outscored the Gators by the same margin—exactly 99 points—in their last six meetings. They’ve won in blowouts (31-4 in 1987, 41-16 at The Swamp in 2002), won in bowl games (27-10 in the Peach Bowl in 2004) and won in stirring comebacks (38-33 in Miami in 2003, a game Florida led by 23 points in the second half).

In 2002 Miami rolled into The Swamp ranked No. 1 and looked every bit the part, manhandling Florida on both sides of the line of scrimmage and handing the Gators their worst home defeat since 1979. The 41 points were the most Florida had given up at home since 1970, a 63-14 loss to Auburn that came a full two decades before Steve Spurrier took over the program and led it to greener pastures.

UM in the 2000s = 76-13
UF in the 2000s = 74-28
UM's record versus UF in 2000s... 4-0.
Same number of national championships. UF owns the decade? It ain't over yet. Not even after this year...Oh wait I'm not done yet Turds!!Please try to concentrate!

San Diege State 7 - ND 0

Manny how about some blogging about the Canes. Dont you have any access?

There have been reports on ESPN that Robert Marve has taken 6 dumps in his pants since waking up this afternoon and he hasn't even stepped foot in the Swamp yet. What do you hear?

churches fried chicken.

JORTS!

go canes

Gator Bait tonight Bitche$ Miami 31-27 UF and Murphy gets the U flashed by Fortson and B.Hariss.

Here is a little insight to Patrick Nix and Randy Shannon's gameplan tonight.

First play may be a bomb other than that it is RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN. Their goal will not be PLAY TO WIN, it is PLAY TO NOT GET EMBARRASSED. If they dont get embarrassed tonight, it will be considered a win.

I repeat the CANES and their coaches WILL NOT PLAY TO WIN TONIGHT. They will be conservative, try and control the clock, lose, and go home fast before anyone notices.

The goal tonight: Do not get embarrassed and it will show by the offensive play calling.

Sports Radio in Miami next week will be GREAT!!!

100 percent spicy popeyes strips are like no other

Hey Manny,

I am not sure if its still open, but I used to be a big fan of Burrito Brothers...

And if you get a chance, try Zaxby's...its awesome...

Have fun at the game....I would give anything to be at that game....

Go 'Canes!

NOT KFC, Popeyes or Chrches...

ROSCOES...

cokecanes,ur a lil bi@tch,i think it's funny that the one time u guys actually have a chance to beat the U,the lilgayturds come out and wanna talk trash w/ the big boys.just be glad urine liar got his boys outta the slammer this summer or u guys would've lost ur one chance to beat us. go home to ur jort wearin life partner and eat some good 'ole pork rines and try not to make love to ur sister while ur at it.

UF= THE NEW U...THAT IS, THUG U

GO CANES BEAT THE TURDS!!!!

Bojangles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The chicken biscuit is great!!!!!

I would trust Shandel with his choice. If anyone knows anything about chicken's, it's him. You ever read that chicken scratch he puts out? What a hack. That guy ruined that blog.

If you're ever in Tallahassee, go to Lindy's. Great chicken strips.

Starting to get antsy over here. Ok some quick insights on today's games that have surprised me to be good. Coming in they all seemed like lackluster matchups.

ND still sucks!

ECU is about to knock off last year's Big East champ after defeating the reigning ACC champ last week; not too shabby - post Hanna, so very remaniscient to the post Storm team that I believe knocked off the Kenny Kelly led 99' Cane team.

The local team here in Seattle got hosed against the Mormons of BYU; a BS excessive celebration penalty on Tebow lite - Jake Locker (look him up) and the ensuing 35 yd PAT was blocked: too bad Huskies and coach Willingham.

Ole Miss and Wake was a very good game. ACC must be happy about the outcome and only the beloved CANES pulling the upset would top it off.

UCF and USF, I will have to flip the channel on my alma mater (Go Knights) in a half hour to watch the beginning of the Marve era.

GO CANES!!!

Bro Zaxbie's is the bomb! The need one of those in Miami.
