Progress report: North Carolina

One of things I've shied away from on this blog is grading this team on a week-to-week basis. I never liked getting my report card when I was in school because it usually meant I was going to be grounded (my parents weren't happy when they saw anything less than B).

So, when I got to high school, I made a decision that paid off. I decided to sign up for weekly progress reports, thinking at the very least the whole shock factor on report card day wouldn't be as strong. Instead of receiving grades, my parents received comments from my teachers like 'He's trying hard and he's doing good' or 'He missed an assignment this week and needs to focus more.' It somehow made the blow of when I did get a C a little less hard to take.

Anyway, that's my long-winded explanation as to why I've decided to begin giving you weekly progress reports instead of report cards after each game. My grading system system, in honor of the Canes, is simple: National championship material (excellent), BCS worthy (good), MicronPC Bowl here we come (average), Coker-esque (poor) and Scout Team reserve (the bottom of the barrel).

Robert_marveQuarterbacks: Say what you want about Robert Marve's two fourth quarter interceptions, he still was only making his third career start. He finished 18 of 27 for 135 yards and two touchdowns and nearly led the Canes to a thrilling come-from-behind victory with :46 seconds left and the ball on his own 31-yard line. He threw an absolute bullet to Kayne Farquharson to bring the Canes within the red zone and then just missed on the winning touchdown pass. Jacory Harris, who played a series, also moved the team down the field after getting new life on a running into the punter penalty. He didn't make any mistakes and led UM to a field goal for the second week in a row. This week's Progress Report says: BCS Worthy effort. Stay clear of making a few silly mistakes and get some better coaching and you can move up to the next level.

CooperRunning backs: Before North Carolina quarterback Cameron Sexton stole the show and brought UNC back from a 24-14 deficit, Graig Cooper was en route to MVP honors. He had 19 carries for 110 yards and caught 3 passes for 29 yards and scored twice. Without Javarris James and not a lot of help from the rest of Miami's backfield (Derron Thomas carried the ball 3 times), Cooper moved the pile plenty and made plenty of special plays on his own. My worry is, if Coop goes down, how much trouble are the Canes going to be in? How about big? This week's Progress Report: BCS Worthy effort. With Coop making the plays he's making, he's making UM's backfield look amazing. But when you consider nobody else is getting involved right now you worry this unit can go back to being MicronPC material should Cooper stutter or get hurt.

FarquharsonReceivers/tight ends: Kayne Farquharson didn't make the big catch. But he's quietly becoming the go-to receiver for Marve. The 29-yard pass he hauled in before taking a licking from Darius Williams was Terrell Owens-esque. He also caught a touchdown for the second consecutive week. Also starring for the Canes, tight end Dedrick Epps, who picked up a crucial first down on third and long to set up Aldarius Johnson's first career touchdown reception. While there were some bright spots, UM's receivers still are dropping passes. Richard Gordon had two. Thearon Collier had another that would have kept a drive alive in the first half. Laron Byrd only seems to get short, quick out passes. It's not entirely the units fault. Offensive coordinator Patrick Nix has to give these guys some room to work. This week's Progress Report: MicronPC Bowl Here We Come. A few different, more aggressive pass patterns and less drops and you'll be flying into the BCS level in no time.

Offensive line: Jason Fox provided the first sign Saturday UM's offensive line came out meaning business when he absolutely flattened a Tar Heel lineman on the second play of the game. The Canes offensive line did its job for the most part facing a tough defensive front. But two holding penalties -- one on Fox and another on center Xavier Shannon -- hurt UM in the fourth quarter badly. This week's Progress Report: MicronPC Bowl Here We Come. A BCS-worthy effort became wasted with those penalties late.

The Front Seven: For yet another week, Miami's front line of defense had a stellar day. Colin McCarthy, Sean Spence, Glenn Cook, Steven Wesley and Eric Moncur helped shut down North Carolina's running game, limiting the Tar Heels to 35 yards on 33 carries. Moncur notched a sack for the second consecutive week. But unfortunately for UM, he was the only guy in the front seven to get a sack. Freshman defensive back Brandon Harris had one, too. But it certainly wasn't enough pressure to stop Sexton from mounting a comeback. This week's Progress Report: MicronPC Bowl Here We Come. Another BCS-worthy effort stopping the run was wasted because UM simply couldn't get to Sexton when it mattered.

Missed_tackles The Secondary: For two series, Miami's secondary looked like a national championship contender. Then, Mike Paulus went out and Cameron Sexton came in. He torched the Canes secondary to the tune of 242 yards and two scores. A lot of it was because of the play-calling by Bill Young, who tried to bring in extra blitzers to create pressure. It left guys like Bruce Johnson and DeMarcus Van Dyke on an island to make plays. They didn't. Johnson missed two tackles. Van Dyke failed to cover Brooks Foster on the game-winning touchdown pass. Shannon lamented on blown coverages after the game. How about just very poor secondary play? UM still doesn't have an INT on defense. Chavez Grant said some guys might be pressing to make plays. If Miami doesn't find a remedy, good teams will continue to exploit. Even teams with guys like Cameron Sexton at quarterback. This week's Progress Report: Coker-esque. This was really the only unit who still resembled last year's 5-7 team. And you saw how much it hurt Miami late.

Special Teams: There were big hits and big returns on the Canes' special teams again this week. Colin McCarthy had a big block. Grant had the biggest. It sparked freshman Travis Benjamin on a 37-yard punt return. Matt Bosher, meanwhile, connected on 1-of-2 field goal attempts (he missed off the infield dirt) and had three of his four punts downed inside 20 (including one at the one by Sam Shields who finally made an appearance). But it's his last punt everyone will remember, the one that was partially blocked and gave UNC good field position on its final scoring drive. It wasn't Bosher's fault, another blown assignment by a blocker according to Shannon. But it still hurt. So, did a few long returns by Brandon Tate. This week's Progress Report: MicronPC Bowl Here We Come. The missed assignment on Bosher's last punt was the killer.

Shannon_defeated Coaching: Tough not get on Canes coaches here considering they had a 24-14 lead with nine minutes to play and blew it. It wasn't all their fault. But Shannon and his assistants obviously needed to make some adjustments and didn't. I thought the offense shutdown after Aldarius Johnon's touchdown catch and simply tried to run out the clock instead of giving Marve a chance to win the game with his arm. Instead, they gave a tired, beat up Graig Cooper the ball. Defensively, Young gambled with the blitz today and lost. He left his corners on an island far too much. This week's progress report: When you lose a game you should have won, you don't get to the BCS or play for it all. MicronPC Bowl Here We Come.

I think the special teams deserve a Coker-esque grade. There was a missed field goal, two punts almost blocked and then the illegal procedure and clipping penalties.

One thing I have to say about Butch Davis teams is they are fundamentally sound. I hated the run on every first down philosophy Butch had when he was at the U but in hindsight it created a tough, fundamentally sound team.

The Canes need to be tougher and more physical. Not just a big hit here and there, but on every play, churn it out till the other team gives up.

As fans we should quit looking around for someone to blame the loss on. We have a young secondary and they got beat a few times. We're still WAY better than we were last year and there's no reason to think we won't keep getting better.

Manny - Her'es my question - is the defense in top condition... seems like the 3rd game in a row - including FLA where the D gets torched in the 4th Q - Looks to me like they've given up avg over 200yds of offense in the 4th...

thoughts?

Manny: Great job on the postgame video. It's great to keep in touch from Cali.

Our offense rarely attacked downfield, especially in the second half. A little more trust in Marve could've put it away when it was 24-21 with 3 1/2 minutes to go. Instead, there were four runs by Cooper. Ten of Miami's 15 offensive plays in the fourth quarter were running plays by Cooper. Is the coaching staff afraid of Marve making a mistake? Are the receivers not getting open?

Manny,

Fair assessments of the team, I'd say. And while this loss (like any loss) hurts, I have to say I don't feel as immediately downtrodden as I did last year.

Q: Is it silly to still feel as optimistic as I do about this team? ie: not the potential for big things this season, but the potential for a positive uptick this season?

That being said -- what are our chances next week against FSU? Should my parents make the drive down from Jupiter again? That drive home from Joe Robbie after a loss, while better than driving all the way from Little Havana, it still sucks.

"Is the coaching staff afraid of Marve making a mistake?"

ive seen this criticism all over the place (rivals boards esp), but it seems that everyone is forgetting that they let marve throw it on 3rd down and long in the fourth and he forced a throw that ended up being an INT that was returned something like 40 yards. nix had to have believed that he could call 3 run plays, get good field position and rely on his defense. the blocked punt and bad play by the d-backs are not his fault.

dude's obviously in a catch-22 cuz if he lets marve throw it on the last two drives and he throws a pick or gets sacked and fumbled or stops the clock by throwing it out of bounds you'll have these same clowns saying "why would you throw it when coop was pounding their D all day?"

THIS IS THE 3RD GAME AND THE FIRST ACC GAME.. YES, IT WAS A PITIFUL LOSS THAT SHOULD NOT OF CAME DOWN TO THE FOURTH QTR.. BUT HAVE SOME FRIGGIN FAITH...

MARVE IS A MAN AMONGST BOYS... THE O-LINE IS GOOD ENOUGH, FOX MIGHT BE THE BEST TACKLE IN THE ACC.. COOPER IS A MAN AMONGST BOYS... WHEN JJ COMES BACK THE U WILL HAVE THE BEST BACKFIELD IN THE NATION...

BESIDES PLAY CALLING THE BIGGEST PROBLEM ON O IS A LACK OF CONSISTENCY FROM THE WR... PICK FOUR AND ROTATE THEM... SUBBING IN 7 DIFFERENT RECEIVERS ON THE SAME DRIVE THROWS OFF TIMING... MY CHOICE-KAYNE, AJ, SHIELDS, COLLIER...

THROW THE BALL DOWNFIELD... IT OPENS UP THE RUN GAME AND GETS THE D ON THEIR HEELS...

AS FAR AS THE D... COACH YOUNG; WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ATTACKING, BLITZING D FROM THE PAST TWO WEEKS???

EVERYONE IS BLAMING THE SECONDARY, BUT WHEN THE QB HAS 5 SECONDS TO THROW WITH NO PRESSURE A 3RD STRINGER CAN MAKE A PLAY...

ITS SIMPLE... BLITZ... DISGUISE THE BLITZ... & BLITZ SOME MORE...
WHAT HAPPENED TO SPENCE? IT SEEMS THAT HIS PT HAS BEEN CUT...

THE D IS MISSING A DOMINATE MLB... COOK IS SLOW AND CAN'T SHED A BLOCK... THE FRONT FOUR HAS TO PRODUCE SACKS WHEN ONLY RUSHING FOUR...

THE TALENT IS THERE, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL, BUT TO OFTEN THE U LOOKS TO BE PLAYING AT 3/4THS SPEED... NO ATTITUDE, NO LEADERS, NO FANS IN THE STANDS... & DEF NO SWAGGER...

LAY OFF SHANNON HE'S GOT THIS TEAM HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION... BUT I WILL SAY THIS... IF THE U FOLDS LIKE LAST YEAR IT MIGHT BE TIME TO LOOK FOR A NEW CAPTAIN...

HERES TO 10-2... GO CANES!!

here is the stat of the day- with under 5 minutes left in the game Robert Marve is: 17 of 24 for 106 yards... THAT IS NOT AN OFFENSE.

It tells me UNC only has to defend 5 to 15 vertical yards of the field. Before someone yells cover two, UNC was dropping their safety all game.

I will say it again Van Dyke, Briuce Johnsoin and Chavez Grant just aren't very good. Is it just me or is Grant slower then Chris Rutledge going to the sidelines. I mean these guys couldn't cover me one on one. The team is good our secondary will continue to hinder us all season. Van Dyke cant cover anyone and Johnson cant tackle. All three are lucky if they play in the CFL when their college experience is done

Hey, last week in September is a killer, talk to USC, the Florida Gaturds, Georgia. I'm not sure our game was an upset: I saw this as a toss up. I was disappointed that only about 35,000 showed up, but that's what happens for the noon starts. We will have a full huse for FSWho, although about 10 to 15K will be wearing the garnet and gold.
This is going to be an epic battle, as yestrday's game was. Marve is outstanding, and he has to be allowed at this point to play down the field, or Nix and Randy are going to be too cautious to give our team a chance to get 8 wins this year.

Learn to finish..Stop playing, not to lose.

Patrick Nix sucks! If Shannon doesn't fire Nix then he should be fired. The receivers keep getting the blame but when do they ever have a chance to run after the catch except on those screens. Florida's defense got roasted by Ole Miss's offense and we didn't even try to do anything against them. The play calling is terrible, the coaching is terrible. we got the ball almost at mid-field with over two minutes left before halftime and we sat on the ball. Terrilble decision by coaches. Maybe Shannon is in over his head. The only thing he has done since taking over is sign two good recruiting classes, but if you can't coach them whats the use? We have yet to win a game that we were not suppose to but we have lost games that we were suppose to win. The strength and conditioning coach also needs to go because no matter who we play they seem to be bigger and more physical than us. I'll give Shannon a pass till next year but if we aren't contending by then he should be gone.

The Day After.....

I feel a little better. We'll steel one that we shouldn't win down the line, to make up for this giveaway.
Time was not an issue on our next-to-last drive. We could have thrown on 3rd and 6-7. A first down would have ended the game.
If we split with FSU, VT, GT and Wake we should go 8-4.
Bring on the 'Noles.

Randy Shannon needs to fire Nix!!!!!!! He stunk at GT with Calvin Johnson. It's time for Randy to realize he made mistake in hiring him. If he doesn't, questions will arise if Shannon is the right man for the job. He put last seasons blame on Walton, now to blame Nix........who's next?

Navarro's Discount Store, your opinion on Dolphins Stadium and crowd please?

27 pass attempts for 135 yards. How much more conservative can you get. When you play not to lose that's always a recipe for a loss. For a team with supposedly so much speed how about putting pressure on the defense and stop calling so many 2-yard passes. Shannon is starting to remind me of Wannstache. Let's keep it close. Have the qb manage the game and hopefully we'll win it with a field goal in the 4th quarter. That's a recipe for a loss.

THERE ARE RUNNING THE OFFENSE THROUGH COOP NOT ROBERT MARVE BUT THROUGH COOP... u GUYS ARE IDIOTS YES LETS FIRE A COACH MIDSEASON AND WE'LL WIN!!! u GUYS ARE A JOKE SOMETIMES THIS WASN'T ON THE OFFENSE PEOPLE........ I HOPE MOST OF U PEOPLE COMPLAINING AFTER EVERY LOST OUR AT THE GAME BECAUSE YESTERDAY I DONT THINK I SAW U......

The problem isn't shannon it's nix. Give randy time to build this program. The wr's are still very young. Let's face one fact at wr only kayne farquharson isn't a true freshman of the top 6 wr's on this team 4 are true freshman in aj,collier benjamin, byrd hell davon johnson may even deserve to be in top 6 thats how bad the uperclassmen wr are. Nix does need to trust his qb or this team will face 8 man fronts all day and no one will even worry about the deep pass. I say randy deserves 2 more years to get his players on this team before we decide he sucks as a coach but nix and his very conservative play calling is killing this team. The secondary did play poorly but when the qb has all day to throw no secondary looks to good.

Bottom line this was truly a collective effort in this loss. Poor decisions were made on the field and on the sidelines. I was baffled to see Marve on the sidelines for two consecutive drives when all was going well with him. Thats on Nix and ultimately Shannon. That killed this offense's momentum. Up to that point we were on the verge of looking like an offesive cash register and that would have done loads for the confidence and growth of these young guys. Sure we got three points out of it, but we really had them on the ropes at that point. You cannot give a motivator like Davis any room, cause he's always gonna find a way to take advantage of it. To me Shannon should have realized that, trumped Nix's decision and explained why to Nix. That decision really set this offense back and they will have to regain all that confidence again. They will learn from it, this whole team coaches and players seemed pretty tenacious.

Defensively, I think their level of play was obvious. The secondary really wet the bed. Give Sexton his props though he was quick with his decisions when needed be. Young needs to find a way to attack effectively on those third and longs If it means sending two extra guys instead of one or none, he needs to. Cause Sexton had a lot of time on those two plays shannon was talking about and with a young secondary theyre gonna get beat nine times out of ten if you give a Qb that much time.

On a side note, Kayne, I want him to make EVERY catch count. He's a stud potentially but lets face it, time is not on his side to really make an impact on this team and in this league. Dont think I am putting this whole loss on him. Just want him to be the player he can be thats all.

I AM SICK OF HEARING AND READING ABOUT THE FANS NOT GOING OR NOT BEING SUPPORTIVE!!!!

COME ON MIAMI FANS KEEP MAKING MORE AND MORE EXCUSES FOR THIS TEAM!

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO SAY ABOUT THE LAST GAME AT THE OB? IT WAS COMPLETELY SOLD OUT, FELT LIKE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, THE CROWD WAS ELECTRIC, FORMER CANE GREATS WERE THERE! I WAS THERE! AND WE GOT OUR A**ES SERVED ON A PLATTER.

IF FANS REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE THAN WE SHOULD JUST NOT EVEN PLAY BECAUSE WE DONT SELL OUT EVERY GAME.

WHAT A JOKE SOME PEOPLE ARE BLAMING THE FANS

In case you Gaturd trolls mised it....just as I predicted on this very blog 2 days ago, Randy's true colors would bleed again enroute to another 5-7 season as we got beat by one of the Carolinas, dead last in the ACC.

The powder puff boys in blue stuck in to us as Randy was outcoached and the Canes outplayed once again. If you recall in my prediction, I said this would be a trap game for us sandwiched inbetween the "we won it all in 1939" Aggies and FSWho.

I was mistaken, as not only was this a trap game Duhhhhh U ........I now truly believe the entire ACC football league is a TRAP CONFERENCE riding the pine to non-existence.

Top to bottom our mediocrity is shining through and through. In addition to our very own smack down at the hands of the Mighty TarHeels....... those up-and-coming Midshipmen handed it to the #16 Decons, taking with them the ACC's highest ranking for the remainder of the season. Du Bulls trounced one of the other Carolinas and the relentless Turtles smoked our pre-season conference title contender right out of the Top 25.

Need I say more?

Well how about more facts vs. our own stero-typical fair weather, we bring 30+ large to home game opinions. None other than this week's Top 25.

The trap conference of the foreseeable future holds down 1 spot in the Top 20. ONE!

Translation for those in the 305 = Uno!!!

#20 VT

Meanwhile the toughest conference in the land, is taking up nearly 30% of the Top 19 with 6 spots. Including 2 of the Top 3.

#2 Bama
#3 LSU
#11 Dawgs
#12 Gators
#13 Tigers
#19 Dores

We all now know the Decons have been exposed harsher than Nix's play calling in the Swamp, so if the Hilltoppers prove as much a challenge to the Hokies next week as the Pirates recently did, there will be ZERO ACC teams left in the Top 25.

I don't know about you, but I sure yearn for our days in the Big Easy! Any chance we can transfer back?

Please don't run up the score on us any more this season and please, please don't hold us accountable for hiring our 4th Choice Coach!

It's all about Excuse U Baby!

UM freshman linebacker Sean Spence doubles-over at midfield following the Hurricanes' 28-24 loss to North Carolina on Saturday?

sweet man! does that mean you get conference of the year award? Oh wait, no such thing.

I never thought Id hear sh*t talking after a LOWLY loss to ole miss. Really, ole miss?

Overrated maybe? Looks like the gaytors may be spiraling downward quite a bit more than everyone initially thought.

"spiraling downward quite a bit more than everyone initially thought" - 5th Place in Our Division UUUUU got em?

Amazing "spiral" all the way down to #12.

If a 1 point loss to a team in a coference with 6 teams in the Top 19 is considered "LOWLY"...... what exactly do you call a 4 point loss to a team in a conference with can only boast 2 teams ranked outside the Top 19?

U HAVEN'T BEEN RANKED IN 2 YEARS

After getting smoked by a basketball school isn't it time to start taling about the NFL again?

ANOTHER 5-7 SEASON FULL SPEED AHEAD

After getting smoked by a basketball school isn't it time to start taling about the NFL again?

ANOTHER 5-7 SEASON FULL SPEED AHEAD

#4 team losing to an unranked team.

Nough said. OVERRATED!

Heisman QB and still cant win a Natl Championship. Just wait till hes gone, your at your PEAK, enjoy it now.

gaytor blog must be boring after a LOWLY loss to ole miss. On our blog again imagine that.

gaytor fans: 'Oh no we suck again!'

gaytors back to mediocrity.

Wont see another Natl title game for another 100 years. You reached your PEAK, face it.

Loss to ole miss, just wait till you play lsu, georgia.

One man team.

Canes Fans,

Hey guys, after alot of thinking I want to say sorry to all of you for all the hassling. It honestly makes me feel better to come on here to talk crap. I already have a low self esteem because I dont have too many friends and I spend the majority of my time on the computer. It kills me to say this, but I can see your team is on the rise. I was seriously scared sh*tless when we played you but thank God we pulled it off in the end. Im not sure how my team is gonna fare once Tebow leaves and that also scares me. I can honestly say that I know it will take a lot for my team to accomplish what the Canes have, and I will probably never see it in my lifetime. The win vs you guys a couple weeks ago was the first time Ive seen the Gators beat the Canes and it felt great. Im not saying I will never come on here again to talk crap but I wanted to let you guys know where Im coming from and say sorry. I still think you guys have a couple years to go to be great but I know its coming and I despise the day that happens but until then Go Gators!

"I know it will take a lot for my team to accomplish what the Canes have, and I will probably never see it in my lifetime"

SORRY AS ANOTHER 5-7 RECORD

Progress report: Duhhhh U

WE STILL SUCK & WON'T BE RANKED FOR 3 YEARS STRAIGHT

Lol, sorry guys I have a case of bi-polar disorder. I just like messing with you guys. All in all I meant what I said in the above post. Thank God for Coker because besides that 5-7 record which he helped create with crappy recruits I really cant find anything else to rag on you guys for. And I HATE when you guys bring up the NFL because I really cant say anything or come back with anything in regards to that. Thats why I bring up the SEC to change the subject. Its weird that Im having trouble lying today, Im on this honesty thing, I think Ive watched 'Liar,Liar' one too many times today. Unfortunatley my bi-polar gets in the way sometimes. Aghhh!!!

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you canesrule: the perfect example of prepubescent behavior that abounds at the supposed stickville Harvard of the South, University of Florida. It must be nice to be 25 yrs old, living in his parents basement/garage, playing xbox or wii all day as well as blogging consistently with inane post after re-post and not making any clear sense whatsoever.

Must be nice to spend a Sunday using a moniker that spells out that the "CANES RULE" while bashing same said team using more emoticons and "lol"-esque spelling that someone's grundle (you know that area between the testicles and... well you guessed it) could write better.

Bottom line, yes our team lost. There is a lot of learning to be had on both the offense and defense. The coaching needs to improve, but I still support this young team. They will get better. Mark my words. 8-4 this season, with a solid foundation for the future Cane fans.

By the way canesrule, you still LOST TO OLE MISS. A team so redneck laden, they can't even afford to spell old correctly you idiotic jackass. They weren't even RANKED.

How about you let Tim "Teabag" your face.

hey Manny I like the new herald layout! looks good!

IM ACTUALLY 28, GEEEESHHHH!

GO GATORS! (IVE WON MORE THAN 2 CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH THE GATORS ON MY XBOX, IT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER LIVING IN AN UNREALISTIC WORLD)

I only go back the past 2 seasons to rag on the Canes!!!

I never like to throw anyone under the bus but DVD better get his act together or Brandon Harris will have him watching from the sidelines. He let big mouth junk talking louis Murphy beat him on a TD and now again against Carolina. Tighten up kid.

We really need to stop holding Marve and the receivers back...we've got the talent to blow teams out.

on marves first interception, looked like khalil jones was the receiver, and it looked like to me from the stands that he either ran the wrong route or gave up on the play or didnt know the ball was coming his way. did anyone else notice this? the replay of the game on tuesday will show this, but if he did give up on it, or if it was his fault and not marves, shame on him as a senior leader. he could have at least hit the nc db and knocked the ball away or down for an incompletion. he looked like to me he wasnt even trying.

Let me set the scene for you:
Canesrule is at home, sitting in his race car bed, wearing his Tim Teboe Jammies, playing with his Gaytor action figures! Suddenly he realizes that his beloved team will not be playing for the championship, or 'ship, as he calls it!
He screams out, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! WHY MEEEEEEEEEE! WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS!!! Everything was going according to plan, the 'canes had just lost, Navy took a dump on Wake... Canesrule was about to unleash a tirade on Eye on the U like the Miami fans have never seen before!! WHY MEEEEEEEEEEE!! But wait!! I have an idea!! I'll jump on the SEC bandwagon!! YEAH, THAT'S IT!! Even though my own team is mired in mediocrity, I'll pump up the SEC and pretend that it is OK that the Gaytors lost!! After all, we lost 4 games last year, but Timmy won the Heisman!! I'm heading to the Herald right now to post about the mighty SEC!!! We have more "quality" losses than any other conference in the country!! We are the BEST losers anywhere!!

CANESRULE, YOUR MOM LEFT HER TEETH ON MY NIGHTSTAND

Go 'Canes!!

Canesrule, we're they throwing peaches, or Blooming Onions on the field at the end of YOUR game?

90,000 LARGE SEE US LOSE SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR, BEAT THAT MIAMI

Trivia question: Who was the 1st player to lead his team to 4 losses, and still win the Heisman?

DUUUHHH, UUMMMMM, 3 SECONDS, UHHHHH, OH I'M SORRY, THE CORRECT ANSWER WAS TIM TEBOW, DOHHHH

The Swamp!!!!

90,000 LARGE EVERY WEEK, NO BEER

I'm going to have to put up with a lot of BS this week, livin' in Tar Heel country. I see 2 key things that would or could have changed this game.

- end of 1st half, 36 seconds left??, a couple of yards for a first down? C'mon, punch that 1st down and try to get in field goal range - this is a whole different game.

- everybody in the broadcasting booth, everyone in the stands, everyone at home knows that long pass is coming and who the target is - should of had a center fielder out there - game changer.

I also agree with many others - canes went conservative, and let Rob be the QB he can be.

Go Canes

The key to the UNC loss is simple, coaching. Randy Shannon is great at recruiting, sure we all know that. Recruiting is ALL he should be doing!

When you have a coach that lacks the simple and basic knowledge of a head coach and speaks in the manner he does, it is a disgrace to the University whom employs him, let alone the same University he earned his degree from.

Take the wonderful clip Manny just provided above; what other head coach speaks the way Mr. Shannon does? Has anyone else realized the man cannot speak proper English? How can a Head Coach, who is the face of the university, not be able to address the media and public with professionalism?

Let us move on to the actual statements made in the clip. "We are not going to single anyone out,” says Coach Shannon. Yet he begins the interview with excuses of "blown coverage" in the back field that led to a touchdown as well as "blown coverage" in blocking during a punt that allowed Carolina to tip the punt, giving the Tar Heels excellent field position on their game winning drive. He also goes on to say before those plays happened, he spoke to the individuals involved in the two plays and stressed to them their “assignments” which he then goes on to say they “blew.” Anyone else find a problem with his statements?

I get a great laugh when asked if he will still continue to play Jacory Harris, Mr. Shannon reply's with; "I said it at the beginning of the season and I continue now, Jacory will play”. Shannon goes on to ask, “Why do you keep asking the same questions?”

The answer, maybe it’s the fact that no other team in college football (at least relevant programs) takes out their starting QB, allowing the back up to gain game time experience in the middle of a football game! The backups at prestigious programs pay their dues and come into the game late in the fourth quarter when the game has already been won or lost. What coach at any respected program in the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 etc. takes out their starter to give their back up playing time during the first half of any game let alone a conference game? You won't find one.

The University of Miami (Pres. Donna E. Shalala) has destroyed football as we know it in South Florida. Once a University so dominant and filled with pride now lies on its death bed with internal bleeding to blame. Telling the nation and Hurricanes fans, Randy Shannon was the best available coach was a lie. You get what you pay for! The Hurricanes are getting an under qualified individual who is a disgrace when addressing the media and when speaking publicly. An individual that lacks the intelligence and fundamentals a true coach has. That goes to show the credibility the main decision makers on campus have.

GROW SOME LOYALTY... SHANNON IS A LIFE LONG CANE AND THE PERFECT COACH TO RESURRECT THIS PROGRAM...

kurt, you effin retard! he was hired to coach, not speak proper english. bob knight has the character that reflects badly on the universities that hire him. he still coached on. get a life, or a dildo!

Dear Herbal Minded:

Unlike you, I am educated. I am not a bigot (that's with one g not two). I can see why you think he speaks well. I am one of the biggest supporters of the University and ALL of its programs.

However, I was never excited about the decision to make Randy Shannon the Head Coach. My choice would have been Mario Cristobal if the direction was not to go with an already established Head Coach.

Not only was he a successful player for the Hurricanes (winning 2 titles) but he was also involved in rebuilding the program during the Butch Davis days as a tight ends coach and offensive line coach (Coker days).

Did I mention he was a key player in recruiting? He demonstrated those skills not only during the rebuilding years at Miami; he also did it with Greg Schiano over at Rutgers. He helped a team in New Jersey (who the heck wants to play in New Jersey) stock up on the local South Florida talent and took key players away from the "U" during the glory days of Coker.

I am not asking for Shannon to be fired. I am simply stating why our talented team came up short on Saturday. They were simply out-coached. We lost to a team playing its third string QB at home! No excuse for that!

If you're such a college football brain, please explain this simple scenario: Why does one take out their starting QB in the first half when he is clearly in sync with the offense?, the type of production we as fans haven't seen for nearly four seasons.

I am simply stating the man does not have what it takes to coach an elite division 1 program. Our players deserve better as well as our fans. He flat out does not have the intelligence, or the competence to coach this football team.

On a side note:

I for one am not a fan of the Herald allowing comments from readers at the end of each story. I cannot tolerate the constant racial/ethnic bashing that takes place here.

In my opinion, the irrelevant statements made on these so called blogs, solidifies the perspective the rest of the nation has when it thinks about Miami-Dade County, a city with a large population of ignorant and low-educated individuals.

I take offense to your comments above. Never did I use any derogatory terms to plea my case. To enlighten you, I am 24 years of age from Cuban and German nationalities. I believe that would discredit your second derogatory term in your sentence or lack there of when calling me a redneck.

I just took the sound clip provided here (and you can listen to any sound bite Mr. Shannon has to offer) and it does not take a genius to figure out the man does not know the proper English language and does not have the interpersonal skills needed to address the media and represent an educational institution such as the University of Miami.

Dear NigerianCane:

You clearly miss the main idea of my argument. You must have trouble with reading comprehension.

I just had to comment on Mr. Shannon's inability to speak during a press conference because it is a direct reflection of the University of Miami. It's called public relations for those of you not familiar with business. Who ever is Mr. Shannon's publicist should get the boot!

Now to your comments regarding Bob Knight, yes he also has baggage but usually the universities that hire him know how to play the PR game (public relations for you slow people). Obviously Miami does not, prime example: the Orange Bowl.

Bob Knight also has what Mr. Shannon does not, a proven record! He also sounds like he actually attended university courses when he speaks. Half the time I struggle to make out what comes out of Mr. Shannon’s mouth!

Please lets be adults here. I am embarrassed by the immature comments consistently written here. I know the paper is written at an eight grade level for a reason and I know for some of you it may be too much to ask but can we pretend to be somewhat intellectual when commenting here (please let me know if my writing is too advanced for you, I can try to dumb it down).

Your comments just provide more and more evidence that Miami-Dade is filled with low class individuals. I am so glad I moved to Chicago!
