Sean 'Sleepy' Spence?

Before freshman linebacker Sean Spence even made it through the door at Miami last January he was already carrying with him a luggage full of nicknames. There was The Eraser. Don't-run-my-way Spence. Sean-All-Over-The-Field-Spence. The Cobra.

Turns out his best nickname might be sleepy. In the handful of interviews I conducted this week to Sean_spence learn more for Friday's story about about the budding young star at linebacker, I found out waking up early in the morning just isn't his thing. Brandon Harris, who has known Sean since he was about 6 years old, told me Spence fell asleep in the elevator on the way down to an early morning practice a few weeks ago. Coach Randy Shannon hasn't been helping Spence out. He moved Thursday practices, usually in the early afternoon, to bright and early in the morning before school at 6 a.m. for the rest of the year. Spence told me he hates it. Defensive tackle Marcus Forston, his roommate, tells me he struggles in the morning to get Spence up from bed.

The good news for the Canes is once he's up -- Spence appears to be money. Through two games, he's already fourth on the team in tackles and has arguably the two biggest plays made by the defense this season -- the sack on Tim Tebow and the big hit on Florida running back Brandon James.

For those of you worried about Spence's size (6-1, 211), I heard Ray Lewis weighed 215 his freshman season and Jonathan Vilma (whom Shannon compared Spence to earlier this week) weighed less than Spence as a freshman. They turned out alright.

> In another funny Spence-related story, Forston made me laugh out loud this week when he told me he's grown so sick and tired of seeing Spence (his roommate and best friend) the two have put their dressers together and stacked books and clothes on top of it to block each other from seeing each other in their rooms.

> Look for left tackle Jason Fox to play with some extra inspiration this week. Fox, a Fort Worth native, has been trying to collect more than 40 tickets for this game for family and friends from his teammates since last year. He's one of five Texas' natives playing for the Canes in this game Saturday.

> FYI, I'll be back tomorrow with my keys and my stock market watch for the game. I'm not traveling to Texas for the game this weekend and I won't be blogging either. The Herald is sending Susan Miller Degnan and Greg Cote. As many of you know, times are tough in the industry. Two writers is all The Herald could afford to send. I'll check back in Sunday to share my thoughts on the game, which I'll try to watch while covering FIU's home opener on Saturday night.

Spence is a beast! Can't wait for the game, trying to get tickets but might have to watch on the tube.

Shannon is going to turn them around so everyone needs to keep a positive attitude and keep supporting the U.

Thanks for the update Manny, based on your typing it looks like you could use the weekend off.

Quote form the story:

"the two have put their dresses together"

Forston and Spence have dresses?!?!?

I think there might be a story here!

{or a typo}

Greg Cote and who is this Susan?? Are you serious? Wow.. At least they didn't send that douche Israel.

Good work Manny, thanks for the updates.

Undersized or not, I think "Sleepy" Spence is going to be a great LB for us in the future. The kid has "it"...the same instinct that all great UM LBs have had in the past. I'm really rooting for this kid to help us out and I'm glad to hear he continues to remain humble.

Manny, the only thing I didn't like about this article is the news that you won't be able to cover the game in TX. I think you deserve to go to the game more than Cote or Degnan. Times are tough everywhere brotha. Keep up the great work though!

Manny - Did you mean "put their dressers together"? Removing the 2nd "r" from dressers puts a whole different connotation on the situation altogether...

Manny, Cote is a damn frontrunning douchebag! That guy only writes on the Canes to grab the spotlight from YOU! Susan is a below average reporter too. You are the only one on staff who has a friggin clue about the Canes. It's ridiculous that you are not lead reporter on the Canes beat.

Yeah, come on, you need to be #1 on the list to go to every Canes game, Manny - SMD does a good job, but Cote is just garbage. He doesn't need to be there - all he does is right some convoluted opinion piece the day after the game. Tell him he can watch on TV!

Manny...too bad you will not be at the game, but enjoy your time off from the blog. Recharge, refocus and reward yourself for a job well done!

GO CANES, BEAT TAMU!

wish it was you covering the miami game manny, instead of cote!

Butt-sniffer

Hey DAU,

It's OK "little guy"! You should talk to your doctor about getting your meds switched to a time released formula! You won't experience the peaks and valleys that you seem to be dealing with now!

I too used to think 86 was the devil, but with my new script, I just drool a lot!

MY NAMES JIMMY AND I LIKE KITTENS

Go 'Canes!

Just read the article by Garrett Hylton from the Herald about creating more turnovers on defense. I agree 100 percent that turnovers will help this young offense and possibly shorten the field. I think we have a ballhawking safety in Jojo Nicholas who can be the next E.Reed or S.Taylor. Also, we need to upgrade the special teams play and find a dynamic game changing kick off and punt returning like D.Hester and R.Parrish. Then we got to get back to blocking punts, PAT's and FG's. Can't remember the last time we blocked any sort of kick. probably since E.Reed. He had a knack for that.I Remember at one time our special teams were known for Beamer Ball.

Manny,

I don't believe you ever told us if McKenzie is travelling to College Station.

Manny,

What do you mean you are covering FIU on Saturday, isn't that Pete Pelegrin's job? Or did he get cut from the latest round of cuts...which makes sense who cares about FIU.

BTW - I love to lick Sebastian's hairy, sweaty balls. Reminds me of my days in San Francisco.

Manny,
any news if Arthur Brown is getting some PT this saturday?

Good work Manny. You should be going to Texas. I think Susan and Cote are going "undercover", you dig! Check to see if they are staying at a airport hotel with heart shaped bed and champaigne shaped bath tub. Let them play on their on money, not the Heralds!!

GO CANES!!!

SEAN SPENCE IS A BEAST!

Pot can do that to you. Make you really sleepy. Down in Miami there is the strong stuff too.

Good thing he has had 2 night games so far.

Here is his textbook example of how to tackle.

Yo.....Manolo, its ridiculous that you blog about the Canes and are the main Canes information guy and they send Cote. I guess seniority rules. And, I know she is your co-worker, but Susan doesn't add much here either. But it is what it is.

Hopefully we come out strong. I'm worried that the young guys have been reading the hype for two weeks about how well they played and come out flat. Hopefully not cause with freshmen, those things tend to snowball.

great clip atlanta. 2 minutes of the same hit with some jungle beat in the background. W E A K A S S

Forston made me laugh out loud this week when he told me he's grown so sick and tired of seeing Spence (his roommate and best friend) the two have put their dresses together and stacked books and close on top of it to block each other from seeing each other in their rooms.

uuuuuuh....what?

CANES FANS LET ME KNOW IF YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY:

I THINK RANDY SHANNON IS MAKING A BIG MISTAKE BY RECRUITING THESE OUT OF STATE PLAYERS. I KNOW BRYCE BROWN IS RANKED VERY HIGH AS A RB BUT LOOK AT HIS BROTHER ARTHUR. SHANNON IS MAKING A BIG MISTAKE BY NOT GOING AFTER LAMAR MILLER, FRANK TEILFORT, AND JAMAL BERRY EXTREMLY HARD!!!!!

THESE OUT OF STATE GUYS DONT PLAY TOP NOTCH FOOTBALL LIKE OUR HOMETOWN KIDS.

IF SEAN SPENCE PLAYED BALL IN KANSAS OR NEW JERSEY HE WOULD BE RANKED NUMBER 1 AS WELL.

COME ON RANDY AND COMPANY DONT LOSE FOCUS ON THESE LOCAL KIDS STICK TO THE GAME PLAN!!!!!!

A: That's what happens when you forget the R in dressers. My bad. LMAO. That was a funny mistake.

Miami fans in Orlando will get their wish.

ABC on Thursday afternoon granted a late request from WFTV-9 to broadcast the Miami-Texas A&M game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, reversing a network decision that would have caused Orlando to be the only Florida market without access to the game through free television.

"This is a blaring exception to the rule," said WFTV programming manager John Keyes, who added that he received 70-80 complaints Thursday morning as fans came to realize their only option for the game might be pay-per-view. "I've had many games where we got two or three times that many complaints and were not approved for a change. This is not normal."

Thats bad news for the canes. Until they post a winning record they will get plenty of noon starts and that means up at 7a or earlier. They had a HUGE problem with noon starts last year. They need to get up at 6a-7a every day to get their bodies on a routine.

LAMAR MILLER, FRANK TEILFORT, AND JAMAL BERRY?

1st - What is their GPA? That's a major issue with Miami.

2nd - All three backs are small quick backs, we need size and power in this O.

Small backs are for the spread O that Florida runs, and you saw how we shut them down.

MANNY YOU NEVER ANSWER MY QUESTIONS

WHATS UP?????

TXCane

1ST FRANK TEILFORT IS A LINEBACKER NOT A BACK

2ND THEY ARE HUGE STRONG BACKS

JAMAL BERRY IS 5-10 185LBS
LAMAR MILLER IS 5-11 205LBS

I'am gonna go read Manny's blog. I like the dude that always sums up his comments in big capital letters.

A Realisst,

1ST FRANK TEILFORT IS A LINEBACKER NOT A BACK, yes I know that.

2ND THEY ARE HUGE STRONG BACKS?

JAMAL BERRY IS 5-10 185LBS
LAMAR MILLER IS 5-11 205LBS

I hate to tell you but that is small for a back. And, if you ever watch them play in person (I have) they are both smaller than what they are listed at.

The recruits we have coming in are much larger power backs and have the GPA to get into school.

Bryce Brown 6-0 215
Mike James 6-0 211

Berry and Miller might be great backs but as a coach you have to recruit by who you think is better.

Arthur Brown not playing? He is a freshman. Why don't you name the other players from Broward and Dade County that aren't playing?

Are you serious? 56 seconds isn't even a minute let alone 2. You have to admit it was a great tackle. I will have more to work with as the season goes on. What is so weak about that clip?

Posted by: A Realisst | September 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM

DEAR SANTA, I WOULD LIKE A SPELL CHECKER FOR EYE ON THE U

I loved the clip! Spence will end up having more Youtube clips in the future!

I can't believe they are sending that anti - Cane Cote "the douche". That guy is a useless hack. Here's a some great tip for the hearald to save money.
1.) Fire Cote, you'll get more readers and save on what you would otherwise pay him.
2.) Stop writting all these libral, communist, anti-american articals and maybe people will start buying this rag again.

Remember, "libralisim is a mental disorder" - M. Savage

Cote should be sent to the Unemployment Line.
