Gameday blog: UM 49, Duke 31 (F)

Huge, huge, huge, huge win for the Canes today. Trailing 24-14 in the third quarter, the Canes score 35 unanswered points behind freshman quarterback Jacory Harris, who finished 18 of 28 for 182 yards, four touchdowns and 2 INTs.

Jacory_harris2> There's no doubt the big story now becomes does coach Randy Shannon send Jacory back to the bench in favor of starter Robert Marve. Shannon has said all along Marve would be the starter all year. But the facts are facts and Jacory is the reason UM won today. What is your take? Should Jacory replace Marve as the starter? I believe he should. He's playing better right now than Marve.

> That's one story. The other: Offensive coordinator Patrick Nix had the bounce-back game he was sorely looking for. Despite a shaky first half, he made the proper adjustments and even threw in a few wrinkles to get the offense going. The no-huddle attack in the second half was huge and set Duke back. Do the Canes now go with the no-huddle from here on out? And, is Nix now free of the wrath of Canes fans? Well, maybe for a week.

> Go-to receiver? How about freshman Aldarius Johnson. He caught 8 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown and definitely showed why he and Harris were such a great tandem in high school. Their chemistry was amazing and basically fueled UM's comeback.

> How about UM's defense? They made the key stops when needed in the second half. Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis made some plays in the first half, but the defense stepped up big-time in the second half and got the pressure it needed to knock Lewis and his receivers off their game. They also were good on third down, stopping Duke on 11 of 17 attempts.

> On a side note, UM improved to 1-2 in the ACC. Also good news, North Carolina lost to Virginia to fall to 1-2 in the conference. That's the help the Canes needed to try and leapfrog the Tar Heels in the division. Virginia Tech (2-0) and Georgia Tech (3-1) are still ahead. But UM controls its own fate against those teams as well as Virginia (2-1). All the Canes need is for the Hokies to drop a game tonight to BC and UM can win its way into the ACC title game.

DukeIn case you didn't know, I was not on the travel squad for Duke. Susan Miller Degnan and Jeff Shain will be there for us today. But I was out at the BankUnited Center this morning with about 150 fans and a few other reporters for the Hoopfest. Here's a link to the audio interviews from today with Frank Haith, Katie Meier, Jack McClinton, Dwayne Collins, Brian Asbury and Jimmy Graham.

A couple of quick notes from today's Hoopsfest:
Jack_mcclinton> Jack McClinton talked about winning a national championship. McClinton really believes the Canes can make a deep run with this team. Jimmy Graham told me McClinton is even better than last season. "I feel like Jack can just continue what he did last year and just do it the whole season from the beginning tip down in that tournament that we have to go to and the NCAA tournament," Graham said. "Those last couple of games, he was penetrating a lot more and doing his little flutter deal a lot more. I feel like your going to see a lot more of that this year because people are playing his shot. He's going to take what they give him this year."

Jimmy_graham> As for Graham, he wants to be lighter this season. He said he's starting this season at 250 pounds instead of 265 so he can be more athletic. We asked him if UM will be OK this season replacing Anthony King and Ray Hicks with Cyrus McGowan, Julian Gamble and Reggie Johnson. "Julian Gamble is a big man. He's got a big wide body, attacks the glass," Graham said. "Cyrus McGowan is going to be a great player. He's a 6-9 guy who can shoot the three. He plays defense like I do. It's fun playing with him. King and Ray were great players for us. Cyrus is definitely going to help fill that gap and so is Julian. I feel like we have the same strength as last year, if not a little better."

> The Canes have been practicing for two days and a few guys are already banged up. Collins strained his groin Friday and bruised his hip with a fall Saturday. Guard James Dews had to be given an IV by Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue after he cramped up Saturday. He came back and did sign autographs for fans. Redshirt freshman center Julian Gamble was injured Friday and was on crutches Saturday. Haith said he doesn't believe the injury will be extensive.

Dequan_jones> Freshman swingman DeQuan Jones is receiving high praise from his teammates. Collins said he's having fun playing above the rim with Jones, who was called by McClinton and Asbury as a great finisher around the basket. "DeQuan is a beast. He's real athletic. As a freshman, he dunks a lot," Collins said. "You know me. I'm into dunking. That's all we do. He's mainly on my team in scrimmages. Yesterday he threw me an alley-oop. I returned the favor and threw him one."

That second half was a beautiful thing!
It's official, Jacory is the starter, and UM's offense from the dynasty years is back.
Harris was smooth as ice out there and the receivers catch his balls. This game was the turning point - we'll run the table with Jacory and reestablish the dynasty - with a quickness. What a game.

never thought i would see the day when duke was a big win, miami is offically sorry

MH...U know better, the SS sucks except for Shandel who does a GREAT job.

I only had 67 posts today at Canespace, not 200 you stupid, ignorant, idiot. Choke on a rock you foolish boy!

When do you start your own blog wearing a Canespace t-shir and jorst and get no posts???

Go ahead I'll pay for the start up just to see you FAIL!!!

wow, are these shannon's recruits this week or cokers if they lose next week. does anyone even realize that miami hasn't beaten a winning bcs team since BC in cokers last year. it was great to see harris finally get a chance and he played a good game. it will be interesting to see next week if the offense can still work against a real defense. WF offense isnt that good so the defense has a chance. shannon still has yet to beat a team with a winning record.

Jealousy will get you no-where....

MARVE STILL THE STARTER

Manny great job as usual but like i told U last week it's Jacory time. U ask the question what is holding this offense back? We got the answer today, it was Marve. Not just the offense but whole team plays better with Jacory. That second half reminded me of the U football. I saw player bouncing around, i saw swagger and most of all i saw hope. It seems as if everyone knew Jacory is the better leader for this team. Everyone besides Shannon. I don't see no way in hell that Marve should be named starter. That's a thyme that am seeing, is that Shannon is not playing his best players. Case in point i think Chambers and Shawnbrey or better pure runners than James or Thomas, yet they continue to get the carries. Cooper is just a change of pace back. Same thing at LB. We got to replace Cook and Sharpton. Where is Art Brown play those youngins and see what U have. I was disapointed by the late TD. Got to hold them out the end zone. Game ball to Jacory on offense and D-line. Keep chopping wood baby and let's win the ACC.

Go ahead I'll pay for the start up just to see you FAIL!!!

What no take on my offer? I'll give U $300 to start up your own blog. U afraid? Come on BIG boy what U got?

jacory has to start. but lets remember what marve did to texas a&m and not get to hyped on jacory. wake forest has a really tough defense. lets not let this get to big in our heads and think jacory can be the savior

Manny,

You are insane. We are talking about beating DUKE.

Talent wise Duke is not a good barometer for this team. Let's see what they do against GaTech, NC St, and Virginia. If they can win those 3 games and they play Wake and VaTech tough then we have something to talk about. Let's see what they do against Wake, a veteran team of 5th year seniors that can actually play.

I am not being a wet blanket, a win is a win. But the truth is the truth:

1. Kids come to Miami because they view it a gateway to the NFL. So why do we have a High School offense? Let the players shine in one of the offenses used in the NFL.

Harris throws a catchable ball, so why don't they use some routes and bunch formations from the west coast offenses. The West Coast offense stresses Yards after the Catch, and I think Harris can put the ball in-front of the WR's so they can catch it in stride.

2. The corners have to play a physical. These guys are bigger than Tony Carter at FSU, but they don't have his heart.

3. The DL needs a disruptive force in the middle. If Miami had 3 tackles that could ball, they would be so much better on Defense. The point is - Nobody on the DLine commands a double team or even a chip block. This makes it easy for teams to run and pass on UM.

4. Miami has to continue to get better each week, and let the wins and losses take care of themselves. They are owed some luck because they should not have lost to NC, but they have to create their own luck by working hard.

5. Both QB's need to work on their mechanics to improve their velocity and accuracy on throws beyond 10 yards... It seems they are "aiming" versus throwing.

Finally the team puts its best players on the field and uses them. It would be interesting to see if Marve was given the same offensive plays and calls to exectute. These freshman receivers are fantastic:
(4) A. Johnson is a natural and should never be on the sideline when the offense has the ball.
(80) T Benjamin is the Road Runner. They must find more ways to get him the ball in space.
(28) T Collier is another exciting play maker.

My suggestion is to open this offense up like they did in the second half. Make defenses adjust and try to match up with their speed and talent. That will open up the middle for the running game.

There is nothing to lose by opening up!

I TOLD MY WIFE LAST WEEK. THE PROBLEM I HAD WAS I WAS AFRAID THAT THE UM WAS GOING TO WAIT SO LONG TO REALLY USE JACORY HARRIS UN TIL HIS CONFIDENCE LEVEL WOULD NO LONGER BE THE SAME. THIS IS THE SAME YOUNG MAN WHO HAS CALLED HIS OWN PLAYS THE LAST TWO YEARS WHILE ATTENDING MIAMI NORTHWESTERN SR. HIGH. HIS TEAMS WERE UNDEFEATED BOTH YEARS AND WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BOTH YEARS. LAST YEAR THEY WON THE MYTHICAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. HE WAS VOTED MR. FOOTBALL AND THREW 49 TOUCHDOWN PASSES. I HAVE WATCHED HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FOR AT LEAST FOURTY YEARS AND I HAVE NEVER SEEN A QUARTERBACK OR A TEAM FOR THAT MATTER PLAY AS POISED AS MIAMI NORTHWESTERN DID IN SUCH A BIG GAME. JUST THE FACT THAT THEY HAD SO MANY FANS SITTING ON THE GROUND AT THE STADIUM IN DALLAS TEXAS WAS SOM ETHING QUIT NEW TO ME, BUT EVEN THAT DIDN'T FAZE THIS TEAM FROM ACHIEVING THEIR GOAL OF WI NNING THIS GAME WHICH SOLIDIFIED THEIR RANKING AS NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION. MANY PEOPLE INCLUDING MYSELF AS WELL AS MANY SPORTS WRITERS SAID THIS WAS THE M OST TALENTED HIGH SCHOOL TEAM THEY HAD EVER SEEN. THE TRUTH BE TOLD, IF THE COACHES AND PLAYERS WERE SELFISH. THAT TEAM WOULD HAVE EASILY SCORED MANY TIMES IN THE 70'S OR 8O'S THANK GOD THEY WERE NOT BUT WERE TRULY A CLASS ACT ORGANIZATION. I GUESS THAT'S WHY WHEN NORTHWESTERN DEFEATED SOUTHLAKE CARROL IN DALLAS TEXAS, AFTER THE GAME WAS OVER ALL THE PLAYERS GOT DOWN ON THEIR KNEES TOGETHER IN PRAYER. NOW THAT'S TRULY A CLASS ACT.
PSALMS 9

Good win on the road. I know it was Duke, but it was on the road and that matters. Marve has the stronger arm, but JH has much better game management skills. And with the coaching we have, we need JH to make something happen when they call those whack plays! He does a better job of getting the ball to playmakers and that's what we need more than anything else right now.

Miami just needs to win out its division in the ACC. It's 2nd loss was to FSU which plays in the other division. If they win out, they will play in the ACC champ game. It doesn't matter who else losses as long as they win out.

Go get get 'em CANES!

Can I get someone committed?

BIPOLAR DISORDER

where can i find some real highlights of the game?

Soup, go back to your own blog. Some of the least knowledgeable fans are on the space blog. And for the most part, they are arrogant. I have been calling for Jacory to start over there for weeks, and over there, that opinion was not respected, and I just got to the point where I don't go there anymore. I mean, you got guys over there comparing Randy Shannon to Bear Bryant. What a joke.

MH, you said it best. sad so sad

VACANES,

Im a Hall of famer. Randy Shannon is the next Bear Bryant. We beat Duke. My next blog will be Shortlist for Canes to National Championship.

SOME CRAZY VUCKERS TONIGHT.... BOTH BLOGS ARE GOOD... MANNY PROVIDES THE INFO, CANESPACE PROVIDES AN EASIER AND MORE ACTIVE BLOGGING SYSTEM... BUT THEY ARE AROGANT AT THE C-SPACE... SOUP DOESN'T KNOW $HIT ABOUT FOOTBALL, BUT TALKS LIKE HE DOES.. 86 IS GROWING ON ME...

CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG..

86 and Soup are the same person.

DOESN'T SURPRISE ME, BUT I WAS GIVING HIM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT...

SPLIT PERSONALITIES I SEE..

Yup, so I got talk out of both sides of mouth.

LOL... ANYWAY... GOOD GAME 2DAY, WE GETTING BETTER... BUT A BIG GAME NEXT WEEK... LATER 2 BOTH OF YOU..

Yeah, today was a great game. A great great performance by Harris. I haven't seen quarterback play that good in a long long time. I am very happy. The future is bright with Harris. The kid is an absolute winner.

I said it earlier. Jimmy JOhnson said you never what you have till you put em in a game that means something. Well Harris and Johnson are gamers and we got something

Canes you dont what you are talking about. Come to Canespace, we know everything. You are clowns here.
