UM-Wake Forest thoughts

It wasn't pretty. It wasn't a dominant performance. But Saturday's 16-10 win against Wake Forest at Dolphin Stadium was the third consecutive victory for this young University of Miami football team, which is starting put the struggles this program has endured over the last three to four years in the rear-view mirror.

Last week, it was backup quarterback Jacory Harris who keyed UM's turnaround against Duke. This week, it was the other side of the quarterback partnership who ignited the Canes, starter Robert Marve. The red-shirt freshman finally got the offense going in the third quarter with a 48-yard run that setup the go-ahead touchdown. UM's defense, which was shredded on the ground to the tune of 116 yards in the first quarter, buckled down in the second half and didn't allow Wake to move the football with regularity anymore. Meanwhile, kicker Matt Bosher (with the exception of one hiccup) had an exceptional day. It all added up to a third straight victory for the Canes, who beat an experienced team that has won plenty in this conference the past several seasons.

Robert_marve> PLAY OF THE GAME: Marve's 48-yard third quarter run. Until he faked the handoff to Graig Cooper, turned the corner, juked a defensive back and raced up field, Wake Forest had basically kept the Canes in check. Marve's long run setup his own 1-yard plunge and go-ahead touchdown with 8:03 to play in the third quarter.

> IT WAS OVER WHEN: With UM leading 16-10 and trying to run out the clock, Marve scrambled on third and 10 and found Thearon Collier open downfield for a 30-yard gain to midfield. All UM had to do was pick up one more first down to run out the clock.

GAME BALLS
Offense - QB Robert Marve:
For all the struggles he had coming into this game, Marve rebounded by making the play of the game, the clincher and scoring UM's only touchdown. He finished 11 of 20 for 153 yards and ran for 56 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Honorable mention: WR Travis Benjamin. The Blur led the Canes with 72 yards receiving on four catches and his 52-yard catch in the first half setup UM's first field goal. He also hauled in a key third down pass in the second half along the sideline.

Defense - DL Adewale Ojomo: The redshirt freshmen is starting to fill in nicely for the Adewale_ojomoinjured Eric Moncur. Last week against Duke, he had UM's only sack. Saturday against Wake, he had six tackles, 1.5 sacks and an important forced fumble which led to UM's last field goal. He also shared a huge sack in the first half when Wake Forest was driving and he stopped their drive at the UM 40 by bringing down Riley Skinner on fourth down. Honorable mention: LB Romeo Davis. Romeo hadn't played much in a while, but was a key cog in stopping the run in the second half for the Canes. He finished with five tackles and made some punishing tackles as Wake tried to run the football up the gut.

Special Teams - K Matt Bosher:Yes, he shanked a punt in the fourth quarter and averaged only 36 yards a punt, but he made all the kicks he had to -- including a career long 52-yard field goal which had yards to spare. Bosher finished 3-of-3 on field goal attempts and made his extra point. ]

A FEW MORE THOUGHTS...
> Shannon has shown himself to be quite the gambler this season. Today, it didn't payoff. But I liked the chances he took. After UM scored to make it 13-10, he called for an onside kick and Bosher delivered a beauty. UM just didn't recover it even though it should have. He also decided to go for it on fourth down twice. The Canes couldn't convert.

> Sam Shields is starting to make plays for this team again. Not only did he make a nice catch and run in the third quarter, but he likely had the second biggest play of the game on the second half kickoff. Shields took a backwards pitch from Travis Benjamin and raced up field to the Wake Forest 45. He then took a shot on the sideline that drew an extra 15 yards to give UM great field position and to give the Canes a sense of momentum.

> After getting just 10 combined carries last week at Duke, Javarris James and Graig Cooper got eight more chances Saturday, but didn't produce a whole lot. The duo finished with a combined 41 yards and couldn't generate enough movement.

> What also impressed me a ton today was how physical UM played after getting whipped in the first quarter at the line of scrimmage. Wake Forest was the older, more experienced team. Yet, it was Miami that was handing out the licks in the second half. Laron Byrd had a catch where he took a shot, bounced off it and left linebacker Alton Curry on the grass writhing in pain. So much for the idea Miami was weak in the weight room. They were much more physical than team, older and more experienced than them.

Our Freshman beat their Seniors

Our Freshman beat their Seniors

That was certainly a nail-biter. While a win does wash some of the bad taste away, we have a lot of things we need to work on - on all sides of the ball. Number one has to be getting this defense to start the game with the same effort they finish with. However, when you think about how young this team is, the future looks bright.

Our Freshman beat their Seniors

Manny, what's your prediction for next week's game?
I'm watching some of the Virginia vs GT, and I have to say they both look good.

One more thing, Manny, what's going on with our RBs? Why can they be more consistent?

A: Norm, I'm done making predictions. The Canes are 2-0 since I stopped making predictions. Both Virginia and GT are good teams. Neither are going to be easy games. There are no easy games in this conference for the Canes. Maybe next year. But not now. As for the RBs, Nix needs to figure a way to get them involved.

I think Matt Bosher needs to get more recognition. The man is not only performing all of the kicking duties, but he is also doing them well with the exception of a few shanked punts this season, but he gets a pass for that IMO. How can u criticize that when he does all the work? And he is making tackles on special teams. You cannot ask more of our P/K.

This was a solid win for us and one our freshmen needed to build their confidence. Everyone has got to remember these guys are young, so for me any win is a good win.

I think Nix needs to get some credit! We didn't score the points but overall I think he called a great game.

I agree with you Manny. Cooper and James having so little carries is just unacceptable, especially with two young QB's. If we we had just a "decent" running game, our QB's would be way more successful. But yeah, Nix really needs to stop with those stretch run plays! Run right at teams and make THEM stop us!

Canes just out-fundamentaled a Jim Grobe coached, 5th year senior laden team. How 'bout that! Go Canes

If anyone was listening at the game I was the really loud guy......

This is a young team that needs to have someone int here ear all day !!! remember when we were 18-19 .... gotta keep'em inspired!!!!

Dude i'm sik of tryin to post this machine will not let me........................

Pretty or ugly,a win is a win.

Did you guys calling for more running see how poor our running game was?? Let's face it, our OL is not that strong or good or deep, especially with Coop in their. Coop isn't a power-running back, and if your OL is suspect that's not going to get very far.

I think Nix uses him in spots when and where he thinks he might be able to break one. Thus far it hasn't work much at all.

Had Javarris not gone down it might be a different story because he could make the OL look better than they are.

Besides, Nix made Tashard Choice look like Willis McGahee against us in 2006 so the problem isn't Nix and his playcalling.

Manny, great work as usual. You are far and away the best Canes beat reporter.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder? I'd say the 2nd thru 4th quarters were pretty looked pretty good to me ... defense clamped down and the offense made plays when they needed to. Canes were 7-16 in 3rd down conversions, Wake was 3-13. Nice to see the UM's coaching staff making the better adjustments going into the 2nd half two weeks in a row.

As Manny said in his recap, Coop/James got 18 carries and 41 yards (about 2.3 a carry). Let's face it, the playing personality/strength of this team at this time is the pass, O-line pass blocking (only 1 sack today) and the multiple/varied weapons at WR/TE. Notice that Nix learned a lesson from the UNC game when the Canes only needed one 1st Down with 3 minutes to play -- three running plays didn't get it done and cost them a W. Love the passing calls and the Marve/Collier connection was huge!

Shout out to Sam Shields -- stellar playing today and he was totally jobbed on that punt return interference call. I think Shields can play a lot looser now that he is not relied upon to be "the man".

Manny-
great post as usual. I agree the canes are improving every week.
but...to put a bit of perspective.
the line in vegas had the canes 2 1/2 pt favorites.
so from that perspective our frosh were picked to beat the seniors from wake.
for what its worth...

A few quick hits:

1. Marve trucking over a WF defender on a run
2. Why are we in the shotgun on 2nd and 3rd down, in short yardage situations?
3. Superman Spence will be gone after his Junior year
4. If the fans are the ones that provide the atmosphere in the OB, I wish you guys would come to the new place, cause it blows without you! 5 games in, and that place is what I affectionately call the “soulless concrete pit of despair”. Its no wonder all the good Cane games happen away!
5. When this team starts to “click” they will be very scary, we’ve all seen hint of the dominance soon to come.

Peace

great win by the canes, today. canes stole this one just like north carolina stole one from UM earlier in the year.

1. Great job sam shields, along with bosher the player of the game by far. He has a lot of heart, and Shields now deserves a shot back at reciever full time.

2. The defense (calling out the linebackers)has to tackle and play assignment football moving forward or next week will be ugly. Next weeks game will against UVA will challenge the linebackers. I noticed romeo davis playing a lot and daryl sharpton playing little to none. romeo davis had a nice game. i can see that they really miss c. mcarthy now.

3. I thought James and Cooper were not used enough today. This offense needs an idenity...either line up in the no huddle and hurry up every down or run the ball out of the eye to set up the pass with max protection. I prefer Oklahomas offense where the run a no huddle and hurry up but can either go eye or shotgun out of it. The huddling and how long it takes plays to get in from the sideline hurt this offense. How can you score 49 against duke out of the no huddle and not line up and run one no huddle series or play the next game.

4. I realize now that this offensive line is limiting the offense. They are great in pass blocking but not athletic enough to be strong run blockers. The biggest weakness of this team is the youth of the DL and the lack of athleticism/quickness on the OL.

5. DVD is the Randy Phillips of this year and always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time making poor play after poor pay in the secondary. Many of the long running plays today resulted because CBs couldnt shake off blocking on the edges. Virginia will run for over 300 yards next week if this keeps up.

6. No matter how good virginia is next week, if this team has any heart and resolve, it will try to blow out virginia to pay them back for the embarassment last year in the orange bowl.

Solid game for the Canes. I too am most impressed with the adjustments the coaches made at halftime on both sides of the ball.

Have to criticize the coaches though on putting JH in the game in the fourth when we needed consistency to close out the game. We went 3 and out and Bosher shanked the punt. Looked like it was going to be UNC all over again. But the Defense stood up in a major way.

Before we go to UVA this week, the team should look at video from last year's final game at the OB where UVA ran it up on us 48-0. That should be motivation enough to get up there and execute.

If we can win there, then we've really got a chance at the Coastal division. VT lost both QBs today and GT was exposed. NC State lost again to Maryland so all we have to do is win out. It can be done. Go CANES!!

They couldn't run the ball today, Cooper was dancing in the hole to much, Marve had 4 dropped passes today

I guess you could call the game "ugly" if you're so used to the flash and bang we used to have. But I think it was still a hard fought/won game against a crew with significant experience -- it looks like half the WF team is 5th year seniors!

I think we lucked out a bit in that something was obviously wrong with Riley Skinner. I'm surprised nobody has brought it up: the most prolific passer in the ACC only gets 8 attempts? Out of 60?

Also, what was up with Coker calling the game? I almost spit out my drink when the game started on ESPNU and he was in the announcer box! Surprised the hell out of me too when the cast started talking about the importance in recruiting South Fla and nobody called Coker out.

Duke beat Vandy! So much for the big bad SEC!

Manny, good stuff as usual. My game balls goes to Marve (Showed alot of heart today), Ojomo(Turning out to be the best D-linemen), R. Davis(Made more plays in one game than Cook has made all year), R. Hill (Already our best safety in only his 1st start but should have had a pick six)and Benjamin (We got to start getting the ball in his hands alot more). Manny, U ask the question. What is holding the offense back? It's the lack of a running game. I feel our best pure RB is on the sideline. That is Shawnbrey or L. Chambers. Has any one thought of moving T. Collier to RB? I think that guy could be a terrific RB. I would like to see some sort of rotation there.

Manny-

Any idea on what station the Virgina game will be televised next week? Are we in for another week of ESPNU, or are we getting a break?

Raycom Sports has picked up the UVA UM game next week. You should be able to find it on a local channel.

Just got in and....What the hell is wrong with everybody... We win and everybody is sucking sour pickles... Damn!!!

WF is no easy task for anybody... they were ranked 22 nationally on defense and the QB was ranked 2nd or something...

And we won, so get off your azzes and start pump'n it up... GoCane...

It may not have been pretty, but we struggled once again against an unranked team.

Yahhhhoooo! We have a chance at having a chance of playing for a chance to obtain a winning regular season record for the first time in three years.

1 ACC Team now ranked in the Top 25

canesrule, yes they do!

Vandi goes down against Duke!

ACC Baby!

Just how often do you think a qB runs for 42 yards, when he should have been looking down field for a guy to throw it to? This is the Classic Marve moment, me over the team. yeah, he took it down there but it wasn't the freaking play.

Manny, great work as usual. You are far and away the best Canes beat reporter.

Oh yeah, you Mr guy who thinks Randy's career matches Bear Bryant. Look do us all a favor, keep your uninformed self on the Space, they THINK you know what you talking about, those who know this team know better!

Glad to see Marve have a great day. Same for Patrick Nix, this guy is doing everything possible to help the offense move the ball.

We can't run the ball!!!! Whats the deal??? We look like a west coast offense at times.

Sam Shields had a good day...nice to see.

I never heard Manny say that Shannon is the 2nd coming of Paul Bryant. He has criticized Coach Shannon when he felt it was justified. Because he states that the coaching staff has made good 2nd half adjustments (a sign of good coaching)and that the young players are progressing (a sign of good coaching) does not mean that Coach Shannon is the great Paul Bryant. Being a fan does give you the right to be critical of the team and coaching staff. keep tihs in mind though, the team just beat a team that was leading the Atlantic Division of the ACC, a team that has beat FSU 3 straight times (twice in Doak Campbell), a team that won the ACC 2 years ago and has competed for the title (down to the end of the season) the past 3-4 years, a team loaded with 5th and 6th year Seniors, a team whose coach is thought of one of the best in the nation (much less the ACC) and who is always on everyones list to take over at "powerhouse/decent programs" when opening emerge at these schools (Clemson, Auburn -if they stupidly let go of Coach Tuberville). Wake Forset in this day and age of college football (were not talking about the 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's) again, in TODAY'S college football Wake is a good, well coached team. UM just beat them with our Freshmen and outplayed their Seniors in the 2nd half, but no instead of being happy with the victory and saying let's celebrate this win, but make some adjustments on offense and defense and go up to UVA and get some redemption for last year and another ACC victory some of us have to try to cr*p on Coach Shannon and the team. WE WON THE GAME!!! I beleive that some of you are upset that the team is getting on a little roll and progressing due to your dislike for the head coach. You would rather see the team loose so that you could post cr*p about Coach Shannon and say "get him outta here". If that is your disposition, you all are not "real" fans.

Hate to say it Manny, but "I told you so!" Suddenly, naming Marve the starter and sticking with it isn't such a bad idea, ay?

I have two things to say about the game: 1. Defense = YES!! (after the first quarter run stopping adjusments are made), and 2. those RB commitments have to be sitting at home licking their chops! There's no way JJ and Coop are guaranteed starting positions for next year if they keep this up. The line could've done a better job, sure, but there were opportunities to make bigger plays (Wake Forest's defense did play pretty solid against the run).

Finally, even though the wins aren't against the best teams in the country, it still feels damn good to know Miami is on a 3 game winning streak and that I actually have SOME bragging rights over my OSU girlfriend!

Great Win Canes ... 6 more games to go

A win is a win is a win.

5-3. One more for bowl eligibility. That's a pretty awesome jump over a year ago.

I have changed my mind. This Canes team is garbage.
We are overblowing a team in Wake who is just downright pathetic. I mean Ole Miss went into Wake and just about beat them. It took a long field goal as time expired to beat Ole Miss at home.
Now we play the most boring football game against a beat down team who has basically quit like we did last year, and we do it at our house.
We are just lucky our schedule is so weak and we played the ranked opponents already who we lost to.
Anyway, a win is a win but this team is a long way away.

Guys I think we might be able to make a bowl this year. This is turning out to be a miracle year! I am so excited! Any of you guys want to travel to the bowl game with me? It would be fun! I'll bring my Sebastian hat and we could grill hot dogs. Mmmmm hot dogs. Mmmmmm. Hot dogs...Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Did I tell you we could have hot dogs? Mmmmmmm. Sounds good right?
Who do you think we will play? I am thinking we would play a Big 10 team like maybe Purdue. It would be a good game. Cant wait!

Go CANES! 3 game winning streak!

You guys are so funny. The hype is getting to the preseason HIGH. Well, it will make the CRASH that much more fun for the rest of us.
You guys beat 3 unranked teams, and a Wake team that has basically quit, and you play a boring game with 3 first half total points and you think you are good and going to win the ACC?

Like I told the Gayturd fans wins and losses dont matter it is HOW YOU PLAY and the Canes look like the garabge team they are. They look brutal! Then what happened the Gators lost to Ole Miss, an Ole Miss team that was beating Wake AT wake with 30 seconds left to play.

Here is a predicition eventhough you dont have a ranked team on your schedule the rest of the way, you will lose AT LEAST 2 more games. AT LEAST! BOOK IT!

Go celebrate with Susan Miller Dykun in Boise Idaho!

Miami has the worst weight room in the ACC. The fact you are not seeing it makes me wonder whether you are a journalist or just another starry-eyed fan.

As I correctly predicted the score and the spread, Gator clown above is impersonating yours tuly out of jealousy. Wake is a very good team, but the strategy employed by their coach was a head scratcher, although when Riley Skinner tried to pass, he was hounded by frosh DE Ojomo, who played lights out.
Da U is coming around and the Virginia test will be huge next week: this is a team that beat a fine North Carolina team and now beat Ga. Tech. All of a sudden Virginia is in first place in the tough ACC coastal, and are the team to beat. I bet it would love to have a shot at USC again, now that the players have cut their teeth on a tough ACC schedule.
Speaking of tough, how about what Duke did to the SEC, beating up on the former SEC East leader, the Commodes of Vandy!
And West Virginia from the so called Big Easy pounding another SEC overrated team, the Auburn Tigerlillies into the mush.
Speaking of Tigerlillies, LSU is looking worse by the week. Pretty soon former true Cane and now LSWho A.D. Skip Bertman may be talking buyout with Less Mild.

The SEC is in a shambles, and the Gaturds are going to be clocked by Vandy and Georgia.
I am predicting Georgia vs. Alabama for the crown.
Miami vs. FSWho if we can survive Virginia next week.

HAHA, I do like hot dogs, but not enough to post about it. I'm really happy to post on this blog, but it is rather amazing how little a life some people have that they have to go impersonating other people.
