A great QB can make all the difference

Say what you want about what's gone wrong at the University of Miami over the last five years. Point to all the excuses you like to explain why this program plummeted from national championship contender and BCS regular to the MicronPC Bowl and 5-7 record last year. You can say its recruiting that Larry Coker and his staff dropped the ball. You can say it was the development of talent, that nobody on this staff did a good enough job figuring out guys like Devin Hester, Jon Beason and Kenny Phillips were really that good. Me? I point to one position: Quarterback.

Saturday was proof positive of that in my eyes. How else can you explain how Miami is 6-3 right now? How else do you explain a team that made countless bonehead penalties and struggled to move the ball for three quarters, suddenly rallied from a 17-10 deficit to win 24-17 in overtime against a team it lost to 48-0 a year ago?

Jacory_harris2_2Jacory Harris is that special quarterback. He's the game-changer this program has sorely needed since Ken Dorsey walked out the door with the final piece of quarterback lineage at Quarterback U. Jacory, though, has brought it back. Think back for a second how many games this program has lost over the past few years because they didn't have that leader behind center, or in some cases couldn't even compete because the Kyle Wrights and Kirby Freemans of the world couldn't even do the little things like get the ball in the hands of the playmakers.

Yes, it's true Miami failed in recruiting. Yes, it's true Miami didn't do a good enough job developing the stars that were here the last few years. But the truth is they missed having a general to lead the offense more than anything. When this program won national championships, it had some of the best collective talent in the country. But it also had one common denominator -- that special quarterback behind center. Canes fans ought to feel lucky they have two. Because although Robert Marve was on the sidelines for two of Harris' magical comebacks (Duke and this one), it was Marve who engineered the magic a week ago against Wake Forest. This program still has a long way to go to start thinking about a sixth ring. Offensive line and the secondary are the two biggest holes I see. But the good news is the biggest piece is in place. And right now, there are two to choose from.

> Saturday's game was without question the most exciting and meaningful win for this program since it beat Virginia Tech on the road a few years back. Miami can now win-out and hope North Carolina drops a game and reach the ACC Championship game in Tampa. Before the season, I predicted UM would finish 7-5 -- or 9-3 if everything panned out. As long as the injury to Jason Fox isn't as serious as it looked on TV Saturday, then the latter is quite possible now.

> I know folks are going to jump all over Graig Cooper for his fumble. But he was the second most important weapon in UM's game-tying drive Satruday. Cooper finished with over 100 yards rushing and picked up valuable first downs with long runs. With Javarris James out, Coop truly stepped up his game in the second half and delivered.

> Hats off to defensive coordinator Bill Young for once again proving he knows what to do at halftime. This was Miami's third consecutive come-from-behind win. It wouldn't have been possible if Young didn't at least figure out a way to slow down Cedric Peerman, who had 10 carries and 66 yards at the half. Yes, Miami gave up some yards through the air and caught a few breaks with a pair of missed field goals. But the Canes defense came up with big plays when it needed to. They didn't break.

> I'll have my report card for you sometime Sunday night. Enjoy the NFL weekend for now. And when you get a chance look at the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots. Ask them what its like to not have Tony Romo or Tom Brady behind center.

AGAIN I ASK, WHAT'S SO BAD ABOUT THE S.E.C.? Sorry 4 all caps!

Gaytor 1972, U talk about us living in the past but yet U keep talking about 1983. Congrats on UF winning their first of two, yeah, TWO titles while UM was on probation! Two titles in your 104 pathetic yr history and UM is supposed to be hating on you?

HEY GAYTOR1972, GOT FIVE?

UFGator1972 aka loser!

He** no they don't have 5!

Lucky to have that small number, 2.

what happened to doug wiggins he was supposed to be a great player that dipshit shannon lost.

"Not only did we killed you but Nebraska blew it by deciding to go for the win and stay undefeated when all they needed to do was kick the extra point to win the National Title."

Not only did we killed you?

At least that Silly Biotch Canesrule/Kehoe Steamer guy can write sentences. Your just boring.

Thanks for the numbers, Cat5 Cane. This is why the Canes are hot! I'm (305) for life. One of Miami's coolest guys: Da Ice

At least we have undefeated seasons. Where is UF's at? Oh yeah, they ain't got NONE! I guess Ole Miss, Auburn, Bama, FSU and THE U have put dampers on that one. UF is only up right now because THE U is down. Sure looks to me that gap is closing yet AGAIN!

SEC defenses? Looks like THE U is the only team to hold UF under 30 points. Sure would of liked that game to roll around now instead of the 2nd game of the season. Look how good our team does with some experience for those baby Canes. Heck, we're 6 points away from being 8-1 anyway. Not bad at all considering 5-7 last year.

Why U pick on this tiny university in Coral Gables?

UF: 2-6 in last 8 mettings, 2 National Titles.

THE U: 6-2 in the last 8 meetings, 5 National Titles.

GET OUT OF OUR SHADOW!!!

I'm old school UM........................
Does anyone remember other black QBs in UM football history. I remember someone who was pretty good back in the day. Hit me up.
Ice Daddy on the mic

BTW, UF doesn't even have a winning bowl record, ALL TIME!!!

How pathetic? Gator Nation? More like Wannabe nation!

UF bowl record:

Postseason bowl record 16–19

Miami bowl record:

Postseason bowl record 18–13

"I wish I were a Cane,*sniff*sniff*, but I'm not. I am stuck being this stupid, ugly, swamp lizard fan."

How about we do all time records:

UF is 618–368–40 (.622)

THE U is 551–307–19 (.642)

Enjoy it while it lasts UF. Even U know it doesn't last forever!

#1..Canes fans........stop living in 1983... This is 2008... The Gators are much better than you. When the Gators played bad.. .they still beat the canes by 23.

#2 I went to UF... I have a job.... chances are...you don't go to um...you are probably just a miami fan because you are a consistent bandwagon from miami.... and you probably clean toilets for a living...

P.s. I Hate canes fans... you're terrible...pathetic... and you don't even show to your games...if my gators went 6-6 that stadium would still have 90,000 fans rocking the house we did it for 3 years under zook.

EJ Baker, too

Philly,

Is that all U got? That was weak. At least back what U say with some substance...

Let's see, the lizards only has the NOW, therefore, lizard fans crawl out from under rocks to pump out their chests, but have very little to show for it.

SEC was top notch last year, and the lizards did nothing. They were beat by Meechigan which lost to App State, and pretty much the entire Big Ten.

The SEC is down this year, and of course UF is at the top. I only see Bama and UF making noise anyway. Vandy was, but lost to ACC Duke! Ole Miss made noise by beating the mighty lizards BUT lost to ACC Wake Forest! The lizards simply hasn't played anybody. U want to pump Ur chests out for beating an inexperienced Miami team with a 5-7 record from last year then go right ahead. I guess U've earned it.

Sure U just beat UGA, but didn't Bama have them 31-0 in THEIR house on THEIR famous "black out" night?

BUT every single time you actaully play a decent Miami team, U get beat, embarrassed, and sent home crying rather it be in our house, Ur house or even in the bowls. This has been proven since '83. Until U beat a proven Miami team then U will never have the respect from a team that OWNS U!

Is that all you can say is for U fans to stop living in the past? Why? Because we have one and the lizards don't? That's just stupid!

Rememeber, the present doesn't last very long, but the past lasts FOREVER!!!

Oh, of course U would say something that stupid, "the gators played bad!" Well, guess what? We played bad, too. The refs helped the lizards win anyway. We all saw it.

Our offense is extremely young with 8 TRUE freshman scoring TDs already, and an inexperienced OC. At least Meyer has saved the lizards from dropping off the college football scene entirely. Sure you won in '96, but wasn't Miami on probabtion with limited schollies then? Sure U won in '06, but didn't Miami have mediCoker that didn't even recruit a QB in '05 and '06?

Just be happy with Ur 15 minutes of fame. Be happy U did not have a drop off between Spurrier and Zook as we did between Davis and Shannon. Be happy ESPN is calling U the best ONE LOSS team right now. Be happy the SEC is down, and tied with the ACC 3-3. This is Ur time so take it while U can. It will soon be OVER!

P.S. No joke because University Drive is NOTHING compared to South Beach and Coconut Grove, num num! Miami also has NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL pro teams. What else is there to do in Alachua county? Have sex with your sister? LMAO!!!

hey phil, we own ur gayturd nation and always will. We just stumbled for awhile but are on our way back!! Oh and i forgot there are other things besides football to do here in miami. Our fans show up when needed!! GO JASCORY and GO MIAMI HURRICANES!! It's great 2 b a MIAMI HURRICANE!!!

hell yes canes are back!

anyone else heard about the potential black uniforms against VT??

The bantering that goes on back and forth on this blog is nothing else if it's not funny.

Those Tim Tebow fans better shut up. The next time the U and UF play, the outcome will very likely be quite different, especially if Tim Tim Tim Tim Tebow Tebow Tebow Tebow Tim Tebow Tim Tebow Tim Tebow goes pro after this season.

As for Manny's topic: I think Larry Coker recruited players who are/were good enough to win. I think Wright and Kirby are/were both good quarterbacks. But it was evident by the end of the championship game against Ohio State in '03 that Coker's influence amounted to changing the entire football culture at the U from, "we WILL win because we're the U," to "winning isn't as important as being polite and friendly and not offending anybody."

In other words, I think that Shannon or Davis with the same players would've won more games than Coker, and Davis and Shanon would've preserved the U's reputation, while Coker obviously didn't like the U's reputation.

That being said, Marve is clearly as talented or even more so than Harris, but Harris keeps his cool and doesn't make mistakes and--most importantly--I think the team will play for him better than it will for Marve: just a chemistry thing.

I think the 'Canes will take out the law firm of Tech, Tech and State, finish 9-3, and win whatever bowl game they play.

Next year the 'Canes will definitely be in national championship discussions and might win it. But in 2010, the 'Canes bring home their sixth national title by BEATING THE LIVING CRAP OUT OF THOSE POSERS IN TUSCALOOSA!!!

UM has a (-4) turnover margin, freshmen under center and all over the place, 4 of the best returning defensive players & top RB out w/ injuries for most of the year, brand new defensive scheme, no home field advantage at all and a relatively small athletic budget.

With all of that, after 9 games they are 6-3 with a chance (not a great chance, but a chance) to win the ACC, and some of you clowns are critical of the coaches and the team. Wow.

What will happen when the freshmen grow up, this D gets up to speed and starts to take the ball away, and the QB's have the experience to read the D and change out of bad plays? Wow.

Good luck in life, dunderheads-you need it.

Wheres the Weekly grade manny???????

ICE DADDY,

Are you referring to Kenny Kelly who started right before Ken Dorsey came on the scene? Kenny eventually went on to play professional baseball with the Devil Rays organization which allowed Dorsey to start. Ryan Collins was there prior to Kenny but was not nearly as good as Kenny.

I like men!!!

Love Men!!!

Guys we shouldnt be talking a single thing until we can win the ACC. We havent done it. Since joining a real conference like the ACC, we havent won it once. Lets win it or how about maybe beat a ranked team ONCE before we start talking. Beating Duke, UCF, A and M, and Charelston Southern is nice but we need to start beating ranked teams--even teams ranked in the 20s forget the top 5. We are a LONG way away from anything and with Randy Shannon as head coach we are even further. Maybe we could hire Mike Leach, he would be a big hire since Greg Schiano wanted nothing to do with us.

FIRST OFF PEOPLE THIS IS A FRESHMAN CLASS.. AND FLORIDA HAD HELL WITH THEM. NOW AS FAR AS COACHES DAM FROM 5-7 TO 6-3 DO WE SEE THE DIFFERENTS. QB MARVE IS GOOD HARRIS IS BETTER NOW U WILL SEE HOW ALL THIS TURN OUT BUT FOR THOSE WHO SAY DIFFERNT DONT STICK YOUR FOOT IN YOUR MOUTH

you guys remember wheb .. gearge teague ran lamar thomas down and took the ball from him and alabama went on to crush our attempts at back to back national in 91 and 92 ............. well i thought it was over for our program.. probation and we sucked .. but we eventually got back to winning a national .. and actually .. the year before that we were robbed.. they let fsu play oklahoma when we beat fsu .... then the year after our last national ... the ohio state robbery ....so we could have easily won three nationals just recently.. so we are on the way back ... and if nc losses this saturday it will tell alot about our team and coaching because we should then come out super fired up to beat v-tech...but if we flopp then randy shannon should be questioned ? well see .. i cant wait .... go canes

Mike Leach???? That guy doesn't know anything about Miami. I'd hire Tuberville who has coached here before instead of Leach. Lane Kiffin would also be a good hire.

It's too early to make a decision on Randy yet. The team isn't good, but they are loaded with freshman. College football is about the recruits and Randy gets it done.

What a dum* a** U are!

If your going to copy my name at least get it correct. TXCane not TX Cane

We were close to being 8-1..

CanesDominate!!!

Our fans show up when needed!! … a typical Candy-cane fan response. Are you kidding me? The u needs fan support now more than ever.

You show up to the games to support your team. Those Candy-cane players deserve better.

Great football programs own real college stadiums which get filled to capacity every Saturday. On the other hand, the u does not have a stadium and its team plays in front of 50% capacity with 50% of it being fans from the other team. You will see the difference when UF comes down in 2010, it will be completely full of orange and blue shirts. The same is to be said about FSU’s fans.

The Gators are in complete control of their destiny. Alabama and the Gators win the rest of their regular schedule; the Gators beat Alabama in the SEC Championship game; the Gators probably play Penn State; the Gators win the NC and the Candy-canes commit mass suicide.

By the way TxCane, is your user name short for ToXic Candy-cane? They tell me you are not really from Texas because only real men live in Texas.

ESPN College Gameday seems to like the Gators a whole lot, Candy-cane fans.

Rank School Shows (Campus Appearance)
1. Florida 29
2. Ohio State 23
3t. Florida State 21
3t. Michigan 21
5t. Notre Dame 18
5t. Oklahoma 19
7t. Tennessee 17
7t. Miami (Fla.) 17
9. Nebraska 15
10. Southern Cal 14

We cant even beat a ranked opponent or win the very MEDIOCORE ACC and we are talking about a 6th national title??????????????????????

You all are the reason people HATE Canes fans. Bunch of arrogant fans who dont show up to games, with a Pop Warner head coach.

I basically agree with what LakeWorthCane said above...that this team has had the talent to win for the last couple of years but has not been getting the job done because of lack of a winning attitude basically. It started in the Ohio State NC game. It was in that game that this team forgot how to win and close a team out. Yes, it was a terrible call (the pass interference call) at the end of the game in OT and I still get a sick feeling in my stomach when I think about it but, the fact is, the game should have never been that close and the 'Canes still had a chance to win at the end. That lack
of ability to win close games has stuck with us ever since, until just recently. Bringing back that killer instinct is what this program needed and it looks like this coaching staff and the young players have brought that back. I think that is why the win over Virginia was so important. It showed that this team has once again learned how to finish a game and win.
Now, I hope this team can learn to finish games early and not string it out over 4 quarters and into overtime. I believe that will come with time. Right now it is just important that this team win, period. We can worry about point differential and style points in the future.

"Bobo is correct. Nice win BUT. It's not like we executed a winning drive. Sure it was a TD but JH's regulation TD pass was a wing and a prayer. Had Uv's secondary not been busy puking all over themselves in the endzone, that ball would have never been caught."

you're serious? i don't know if you remember but the defender on Laron Byrd on that play damn near took his head off trying to stop him from making the catch and was IMMEDIATELY flagged for a pass interference that would have taken us inside the red zone if Byrd didn't make an impossible catch
