Canes control destiny now

BANKUNITED CENTER -- Randy Shannon's football team now has a clear path to Tampa and the ACC Championship game. The Canes got an assist Saturday night when Maryland came back to beat North Carolina 17-15, giving Miami sole possession of first place in the Coastal Division. All UM has to do now is win its final two games against Georgia Tech and North Carolina State and the Canes will get to play in the ACC title game on December 6th.

I'm sure many of U were glued to your TVs just like Canes players and coaches were tonight trying to follow the important game. The fact Miami is even in this position is a huge accomplishment. I keep thinking back to where this team was just a little over a month ago, 2-3, 0-2 in the conference. Now, these Baby Canes have grown up and learned how to win. The defense has been the key. I know I've thrown this stat out a ton, but third down defense is the most glaring number you can thank for the turnaround. In Miami's 2-3 start, the Canes were allowing opponents to convert 55 percent of the time on third down. In their five straight wins, that number has been squeezed down to 23 percent. Bill Young obviously deserves a lot of credit.

Now that Miami is in first, expect the Canes to crack the Top 25 poll this week.

By the way, Florida State and Maryland are tied for first in the Atlantic Division with 4-2 records. They play each other next week and that will likely decide the other representative in the ACC title game. FSU still has to play Boston College tonight.

1st thank u maryland GO CANES

ay manny is there a um basketball game tonight?

go terps! Go canes! I'm broke and just pulled put the credit card, ready to fly down to Tampa!!!! 5 down 2 to go!

Manny what are our chances against GT, Can our D hold up with their offense?

I think this is a GREAT testament to this coaching staff. How many of you were screaming at the top of your lungs to fire Shannon or Young or (insert name here)???? Regardless of what happens in the next two weeks, this staff and team kept their heads up when they EASILY could have folded. We are watching this team grow up before our very eyes and damn its exciting albeit sometimes nerve-racking. All this team has to do is play their game and well be just fine. This team is going to be something special in the coming years, something VERY special.

Sam Bradford is considered a top 2 nfl quaterback prospect and will probably go pro so next years Oklahoma vs Miami game might not be as good as most expect but who else is going to beat Miami next year? Every team on our schedule is losing big time juniors or seniors. And And Miami has everybody coming back.If you don't think Miami will be playing for a National championship in the next two years than you're either a cane hater or a moron. Actually I believe their both the same thing.

Georgia Tech and NCState are no gimmies but You cant help but smile after Maryland took care of business. I am going to both of the last two games and I hope we can pull off some amazing victories. Shannon has 23 seniors leaving and hopefully that many great freshman coming in. I think it would be wise to bring Rob Chudzinski back to the U to establish his offense again. I say demote NIX to Qb coach and bring Rob Back. Maybe Nix needs more time or maybe he isnt that great of a coordinator, but I will leave it up to Shannon. BC in Shannon we trust!! Its great to be a MIAMI HURRICANE!!!!!!!

I wish people would stop thinking coaches would accept being demoted!

47,

You are correct!!!!!!

All credit goes to Shannon and the coaches!

Now that our D has mastered stuffing our opponents on 3rd down, our offense must convert on 3rd down! Forget the dull script our offense has been trying to play all season - and unleash some creativity on 1st and 2nd downs! Let's get jiggy with it all the way to Tampa! GO CANES!!

If it was your job and you were not performing because of the stress or pressure that came with the job, and your boss comes to you with an option to take the demotion and build yourself for the future instead of becoming burned out. It would be a hard decision but with the knowledge of knowing what you get with your current job plus a lot less stressful and a lot less people calling for your head I think a majority of people would stay and work their way back up.

Our defense is definately capable of playing well against any Top 15 team, and keeping us in the game.

Our offense is another story... we have tons of weapons, but still are inconsistent. We don't yet have a Top 25 offense, maybe a Top 40-45 offense or something like that.

We are good enough to win our next 2 games and also to win the ACC. This is a HUGE accomplishment for these Canes! But to be realistic, I just don't think we have the talent (mostly on offense) to compete against a Texas, Texas Tech, an Oklahoma, Alabama, or a USC- should we play any of them in the Orange Bowl. We'd need to score more than 16 or 17 or 20 or 23 points to pull it off.

Definately moving in the right direction, though!!

GO GANES!

GO M-I-A-ryland!!

You've got to give Shannon a lot of credit. Between his strategy with recruiting and emphasis on discipline he has come a long way rebuilding this program. In my opinion the importance of discipline is is highly underrated. I think this is why there is so much parity in college football and why you see teams like USC go out and lose to some loser team each year.

This team will be scary in a couple of years. Most of the teams now seem to have a few stars who stand out. I don't see that with this team, there is a new star every week.

I have to say though that I want to see Harris start. He has more patience and seems to have better vision than Marve. I also think that the extra height has to help. He is not as quick as Marve but he is elusive and is more adept at getting outside the pocket when the line breaks down.

I agree that Nix is not perfect but he is improving. I like the "trick" plays that he throws in; it's amazing how often they work.

I knew if UNC was going to lose again, it had to be against Maryland. I can't remember the last time things were working our way.

Manny, I have a question. What will it take for the offense to start clicking in all cylinders? Do you think part of the problem is because we keep switching QBs? I know we are where we are now because of it, but I would to see our offense play a little bit better.

Within great news theres always bad our best recruit *(Bryce Brown) is now interested in oregon he has lost interest. other then that

GO C-A-N-E-S

*florida state is wearing all black! wow

Manny what are our chances against GT, Can our D hold up with their offense? Posted by: jkasse2 | November 15, 2008 at 07:18 PM

A: I think Miami can, especially the way the defensive line has been playing lately. The return of Josh Holmes at tackle has been a huge help. He's keeping guys like Marcus Forston, Joe Joseph and Dwayne Hendricks fresher. It's going to be a great game Thursday night.

1. its not all nix, marve needs to look at more than one receiver before he runs.
2. nix needs to spread the field with receivers and not keep running coop up the middle. he is 180lbs put him in space.
3. watch game film of big 12 teams that spread the field and can still pass for td's inside the red zone.
4. keep one safety deep cause the corners are still getting beat.

patrick nix needs to be fired, he is the worst play caller in the ncaa. Baby canes you have giving me areason to beleive in the U again. We need to support our Boys lets get to the games home or away. lets help them win by screaming our lungs out. GO CANES!!!!!

I still can't figure out why we don't use the fullbacks in our running game? We must convert on 3rd downs as GTech's whole strategy will be to hold the ball and keep our D on the field.

We either have to score in bunches or have long drives that result in points! We must keep that monster defense fresh to shut down the option attack.

I still don't know about Nix. I like the trick plays he's thrown in this year, but why can't he the simple things??? In the red zone, use the fullback or play action to the tight end! From inside the 10 why not a fade route to one of our 6'4" wide receivers?

We will have more speed and size on the edges against GTech. Will the coaches come up with an attack that takes advantage of that speed? These are very winnable games. It will come down to scheme and execution. Let's hope we get both right next week and against NCSU.

GO CANES!!

miamiu - Support our canes as you ask to fire Nix? You sound like someone who doesn't know FB!

Troy beat LSU 31-3. woow so much for the big bad SEC....

Couple of things:
Not many teams look good vs. Tech. I'll take it.

It was my first game at Dolphin Stadium on Thursday (why don't we call it Hurricane Stadium, or something). It got real loud from the mid 3rd quarter on. I'd like to see 75k 'Canes in that stadium to compare it to the OB. I loved when the OB actually shook. That will never happen at this stadium. The feeling was a little sterile. It won't happen, but we need to get seats closer to the field.

WE CAN'T be complaining about anything this year. Let's just go with it and see what happens!!!

Wooooooooooooaaaahhhhhhhh C-A-N-E-S.....CANES!!
(I'll be horse for a month)

hey manny,

great work, question.....

if miami loses to g tech doesnt g tech pretty much automatically win the coastal, because they would have the same conference record as miami granted they beat nc state but g tech would have the tie breaker. isnt that correct?

i meant beating score is 31-17 now

As I observe the Canes to include reviewing the game tape after the game, I came to the conclusion, if Harris does not play more in the next 2 games, Miami will have a difficult time to win out. Marve is a good running QB, not a good reader of defensives. He looks to run first when he is under pressure instead of giving the wide receivers an opportunity to get open. It’s obvious why the offensive line blocks better when Harris is in the game. Harris has a better feel of the passing game and doesn’t lock on one player or look to run when he feels pressure. The offensive line respects this and do all they can to help him make plays with his arm instead of his legs. Also, Marve holds on to the ball instead of releasing it before the receiver comes out of his break. The opponents see this flaw as well. Don’t miss understand me, I’m proud of this young team and their accomplishments thus far, however, Marve is not the guy to take this team to the next level unless he learns how to be patience in the pocket and look for his second and third choices. GO CANES, YOUR MOMENT IS NOW!!!

I also want to add, Coach Nix calls a better game when Harris is the QB. I don't think its Nix play calling. I think it Marve in ability to execute the pass plays being called. You can see the frustration on Nix's face during the game. I think if Nix had a choice, Harris will be the starting QB instead of Marve.

Ok, "A Cane Fan" did you watch the last game??? Harris couldn't move the team. Harris was patient in the pocket and got his teeth knocked out. In case you don't know, we have a banged up o-line. What patience are you talking about??? The center cant snap accurately to save his life, the pocket keeps collapsing and you are talking about Harris been the one to lead us to the next level. How about concentrating on the next game. This is the problem with Cane fans, you guys are mental.Give the team time. If you knew better than the coach you would be coaching a team not seating on a couch. Appreciate the journey and quit whining.

I also want to add, Coach Nix calls a better game when Harris is the QB. I don't think its Nix play calling. I think it Marve in ability to execute the pass plays being called. You can see the frustration on his face during the game. I think if Nix had a choice, Harris will be the starting QB instead of Marve.

Hey.. everyone on the message boards should chill out about Bryce Brown, our #1 recruit.

He is NOT NOT NOT going to attend Oregon.

Like virtually every other highly recruited high school kid, he wants to enjoy the process and have some fun. They LOVE the attention and being fawned over by the coaches and fans.. and the free travel, awesome food, and hot easy chicks thrown at them can't be beat...

Bryce will be a Cane- no worries.

And besides, why in the world would he want to play for Oregon? He knows he'll never play for anything there.. maybe the #2 slot in the Pac 10 once or twice.

Thanks Jo O for your comment!! It’s obviously you can not read or you are a selective reader. I watch more of the CANES games than you think; before and after. I’m not a couch potato; I’m more involved with the game than you ever would know. My comments were not about whining, but about an observation. Yes, the O line is banged up, but it’s still not an excuse for the offense not moving the ball. A perfect thrown ball by Harris was dropped by Kane, which had the potential to go for a TD. He never saw the field again. Grant it, Marve had a good running game, but you can’t count on that every game. Wide outs were running open and he did not get them the ball. Thanks to the defense for being his savor. The game should not have come down to that. The offense is full of play makers and if our QB can’t get them the ball some will become frustrated and leave the program. Recruits will go else where. The next game is about the next level and the future of the Miami program!!! Our defense is playing well lately, but against a team like G.T. our offense need to put up points or it will be a long night for the defense. This is not the time to go backwards. This team maybe young, but it’s full of players from winning programs and they want to win now not later. It’s part of their make-up!!!!

Look, it seems pretty clear at this point that the offense scores more with Jacory than with Marve. Our highest scoring outputs have come with Jacory. (look at the stats and point totals) The offense simply moves overall more fluidly with Jacory.

Yes, Jacory didn't get much done vs. V-Tech. He also only saw 6 snaps over 2 series, began one series at the UM 3 yrd line (or so), and also threw a GORGEOUS long pass right into the hands of Kayne who inexcusably dropped it (it was right in front of my seat on the field- I had a perfect view, and boy was I ticked!!). Between this, and a few handoffs, he had very little chance to do anything.

I agree that both QB's need to be seeing the field at this point, as it's too early to determine which will be the best long-term QB.

And no QB in the world will lead his team to points on every series in his career..

But there is certainly legitimate reason for fans to suspect Jacory would be better, and everyone should respect that position when it is expressed, if not hold that opinion personally.

Glad to see the positive energy returning to the Canes Fan Base. Amazing what winning can do for you.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I love me some Randy Shannon. Winning with Class is a new thing for us, and he has the entire team preaching patience, goals, and 'doing it the right way'. Coach Shannon, you are my hero.

Man,I'm loving it, go Canes! terps made it scary in the end..... Now lets get some stability in the conf. and take it home.

hey manny, i need ur verification, what's the truth on bryce brown's interest in Oregon???? i keep reading it all day, not sure if these people are making up rumors, or it's been really reported?????????

Guys Bryce isn't going anywhere. He was here last night watching the Columbus v. Killian game at Tropical Park. That kid is locked up. He's just having a good time going on his trips right now.

ACC and Canes not Worthy===says writer!
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Someone is going to have a beef. A good one.

Whether it’s Utah or Ball State, TCU or Brigham Young, there’s going to be a group of football players from a non-BCS conference watching the Orange Bowl from their couch on New Year’s Day, steaming mad that an ACC team is there instead of their own.

They’ll be right, of course.

The ACC school that receives the league’s automatic berth in the Orange Bowl won’t deserve it. Not after a season in which the conference’s image has taken a hit thanks to a roster of run-of-the-mill teams, all of whom would lose – or at least struggle mightily – against the aforementioned schools from the MAC and Mountain West.

The perfect example of the ACC’s mediocrity occurred Saturday, when 17th-ranked North Carolina became the latest league squad to wet itself when a victory would’ve all but clinched the Tar Heels a spot in the league title game Dec. 6 in Tampa, Fla.

Instead, Butch Davis’ team failed to score a second-half touchdown and missed a 28-yard field goal in a 17-15 road loss to Maryland.

“There are a lot of kids in our locker room right now that are hurting,” Davis said, “but there is still a lot to play for.”

Of course there is. You never know which team will be the next to choke.

Virginia Tech did it Thursday night, when it all but eliminated itself from the conference title race by losing 16-14 to Miami. Virginia has lost two straight after starting 3-1 in league play. Wake Forest sat atop the conference’s Coastal Division before falling to last-place North Carolina State on Saturday. Later, No. 20 Florida State failed at home against Boston College.

Now Maryland may be the next in line to gag.

Will the Terrapins win their last two and secure a spot in the Dec. 6 title game? Or will they ruin their chances with a home loss to Florida State next week in a contest that Ralph Friedgen labeled “one of the biggest games we’ve [ever] had here.”

“Most of the other conferences, you already know who’s going to be in their championship game,” Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey said. “With the ACC, you don’t know who’s going to win. One week it’s one team, the next week it’s another. The ACC is exciting right now. It’s the best thing to watch on television.”

Speak for yourself, Darrius.

Saturday’s North Carolina-Maryland game might have been one of the least-exciting two-point games in recent history. Overthrown passes, errant snaps and dropped interceptions were among the foibles. Byrd Stadium had the energy of a Tupperware party as Maryland went seven consecutive possessions without a score until kicking the game-winning field goal with 1:42 remaining.

Even those in the press box couldn’t help but chuckle at the buffoonery. When someone clapped after a Maryland first down, the in-house public address announcer stressed that there was to be “no cheering in the press box.”

“How about booing?” one reporter asked. “Can we boo?”

“What about snoring?” another one asked. “Is that allowed?”

It might not be at Maryland – but it should be at the Orange Bowl, which could turn rotten if the ACC representative ends up playing a team from the Big 12.

Last year’s game saw Virginia Tech lose to a pedestrian Kansas squad that’s since been exposed thanks to a tougher schedule. But this year the opponent could end up being Texas Tech, Texas or Oklahoma. That, folks, could be ugly.

Not that an ACC guy would ever admit it.

“I don’t think the league is down,” Maryland defensive tackle Mack Frost said. “I feel we’re as good as any league out there … the SEC, the Big Ten or whoever.

“It’s just that we have more parity, more teams that can beat each other. Most people don’t understand that. They just look at how we don’t have any teams in the top 10. But it’s hard to get in the top 10 in this league because there are so many people that can beat each other.”

Actually, it’s tough to even get into the rankings. North Carolina and Florida State were the conference’s only ranked teams in last week’s Associated Press poll. Both will likely fall out this week, with Maryland standing a decent chance to break in.

The Terrapins boast the ACC’s signature win of the season – a Sept. 13 victory over Cal. But, true to ACC form, Maryland has also lost to Middle Tennessee State.

“There are a lot of schools,” Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin said after Saturday’s game, “that would love to be 7-3 right now.”

And most of them probably would be if they played in the ACC.

Nice comment, pinhead. We don't put up with enough crap from the media, we need this bandwagon dope to buy into the BS. Our program from 1999 - 2003 was the epitome of winning with class, not to mention 1983. Go away, fake fans.

I see some posts on here that say Nix does a better job with play calling when Harris is in the game instead of Marve...Sorry fellow Canes fan, Marve has the same play makers and same plays as Harris....He just can't get the job done like Jacory.

If Miami is going to have any chance at getting to TPA....Jacory MUST play more.

Marve to me is the second coming of Brock Berlin.....PERIOD!!! I was a true supporter of Marve until I was able to watch every game and compare him with Harris...Conclusion..there is no comparision, Harris is far better and should be leading ths Canes into the future.

the offense moves better with harris because he sees the second and third receiver and gets the ball out quickly. if the first guy is covered marve runs, not because he doesn't know what to do, he is scared to go anywhere else because he might throw a pick. the first read is the easiest. look at his interceptions, they are all on the second and third reads. he knows as long as he doesn’t throw picks he will continue to play.

I love the article by Jason King, what a jerk! Guess that's why he writes for Yahoo. He could be a ghost writer using Jason King as a name...it's really Isreal Gutierrez..

Hey loser....by next year the ACC will be dominated by Miami...Va Tech...FSU..that's it!!

I don't let the King stuff bother me.

Come bowl time we'll see the real deal with the ACC. Good or Bad.

Without a doubt, J.Harris is our best QB! RM is a talented running QB! That's it! The Team is limited with RM at the helm!

JH is Field General!!!!!!!!!!!

We will not win big games with a RB playing QB!

FuckOutaHere with that BS, Randy!!!!!!!!!!

J.Harris is the guy!

JAosn King and Gutierrez are the same- ignorant, unprepared and un-informed:

ACC vs SEC- 3-3. Clemson candefinitely beat USC. Ga Tech can definitely beat Ga. UF will beat FSU. I predict ACC 5 SEC 4. " Hideous ACC?"

Second, as of today, 4 teams in the SEC have LOSING records. Only 2 ACC teams have losing records.

Even though LSU beat Troy 40-31, You have to see how OVERRATED they are. They were down at home 31-3 against Troy!!!!!!!!!!!

Georgia is overrated, LSU is overrated. THe entire SEC except, yes, I'll admit it, UF, is OVER-rated.

The SEC is parallel with the PAc10 this year: USC and everyone else, UF and everyone else.

Just because the ACC has parity, people confuse it with mediocrity- Nothing can be farther from the truth: BC, VT, UM, FSU, NC and GT can play with anyone anytime.

Finally, and this proves my point against the "vaunted" SEC: Of all the teams that the gators have beat, Only the Canes have held them to less than 30 points. Inf fact the 26 against UM were really 23. The last was a garbage FG. Urban Liar knew that. UF fanss- You don't want to play this UM team again. You just don't- you were really really lucky to get us that early. reallyreally lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UM is maturing quickly- but even if they don't play and/or win the ACC championship, this year is still successful.

The U is ready to explode! Mark my words- this marks the start of a great run. RS has to continue recruiting. The signs are there...

Kirby: Pay the man. Randy needs an extended contract, and pay the assistants as well. Nix is barely adequate- he is like a deer in the headlights offensively. We need a better OC to complement Bill Young and Randy.

Just watched the Bryce Brown video of him in Miami watching the game. He came to Miami to meet Lamar Miller, that means he is a team player and good kid.

Hopefully that put's an end to all the rumors!

I'm sure he will still take his visits but then who wouldn't?? Free flight's around the country!

He will get to Miami just in time to watch us play a BCS game!

Coaches Poll

Just hand UM the National Title next year. They are fo real. Look at all those top teams in the top 25 they beat this year. The Canes are in independent without a conference championship and will play the national title game at home. Ohhh wait that was the past.

YOU GUYS ARE DELUSIONAL!

Dont say I didnt warn you about your over his head, head coach. I will be here next year. WILL YOU????????

Jaime I wish they would lock up randy shannon forever. He isnt head coach mateiral. It would make FSU, Florida, UCF, FAU, and FIU even stronger. Give him a huge buyout too!!! Because once you delusional fans snap out of the dream and haze you are in, you will realize it you will want him fired.

You are bragging about the Canes losing by 23 to the Gators without a healthy Percy Harvin???

Wow!

Jamie do Canes fans a favor and go hide. We only want true Canes fans posting here and not making ridiculous statements.
