Courtside blog: UM 70, So. Miss 60 (F)

ST. THOMAS, V.I. -- Just walked into the gym here at the University of the Virgin Islands where Frank Haith's 17th-ranked basketball team is set to take on Southern Miss in the first round of the Paradise Jam. Today's game will be broadcast back home on WQAM and the internet. It will also be available on internet TV for purchase at www.watchbtihoops.com.

Paradise_jam_2I was in Puerto Rico last year when Miami won the inaugual Tip-Off Classic. This field is definitely more loaded than that one. Southern Miss (2-0) was a pretty good team last year at 19-14 and has a really good two-guard in sophomore Jeremy Wise, who can light up from the outside just like Jack McClinton. The good news for UM is Lance Hurdle is likely going to return today. He was warming up with his teammates moments ago and should get some minutes at the point, which will give Eddie Rios a rest and allow McClinton to play off the ball. I'll be here to provide you updates and highlights as it rolls along. I know most of you could use a win considering what happened last night in Atlanta.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS....
> Eddie Rios and Cyrus McGowan got the start, but got early hooks. With 16:49 left, Lance Hurdle and Jimmy Graham replaced them. Southern Miss has had some early success in the paint, getting free for short range jumpers. Jack McClinton is 1-of-2 from three point range early.
> Miami has a 13-9 lead with 11:26 to go in the first half. So far, the story has been Southern Misses ability to grab offensive boards and second chances. They've scored most of their points early on 2nd and 3rd chances. But Miami is playing some pretty good defense.
> Since Cory Smith's stickback with 10:50 left, UM has gone on a 7-0 run to take a 20-11 lead with 7:48 left in the half. Adrian Thomas capped the run with a long-distance three-pointer.
> UM got up 22-11 on a Jack McClinton jumper with 7:16 left, but the next four offensive possessions weren't pretty. McClinton went 0-for-3 and drew an offensive foul for an elbow. So. Miss, meanwhile, ran off eight straight points and hit back-to-back three-pointers to get right back into the game.
> UM is 2-of-10 from three-point range and is just making some bad decisions right now on shot selection. They are punching the ball inside against a team that doesn't have much size. Dwayne Collins layup with 3:49 to go put UM up 24-20 and was the first basket in the paint since Asbury's layup with 10:21 left.
> It was a sluggish at-best first half until UM closed out the final two minutes with a 10-run. Lance Hurdle got a nice bounce on the final shot of the half as time was expiring, sinking a three-pointer from about 26 feet out.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS...
> Jeremy Wise had a tough first half, shooting 2 of 10 from the field, but he got Southern Miss going at the start of the first half as the Golden Eagles turned a 12-point deficit to six early with some hoops. Miami gave up 8 offensive boards in the first half and has to do a better job shutting down those second chances in the second half it wants to move on in this tournament.
> Canes are starting to put their stamp on this game with defense. Just about every point Southern Miss has gotten today has required second and third efforts.
> Dwayne Collins has continued to play well after his strong 18-point, 16-rebound opener. He's making plays on both ends of the floor. He's leading UM with 13 points and six boards today. That's encouraging considering the challenge he'll face Sunday if the Canes draw UConn.
> The Canes look they are pulling away in this one. Jimmy Graham's fast break dunk with 5:20 left made it 61-47. The big news: Jack McClinton's streak of 44 consecutive made free throws was snapped when he finally missed one with 5:35 left to play.

Go Canes! Manny, if we win today, what're our chances against UConn?

Keep us posted Manny! (no pun intended)

I hope we win today because after that VideoGame type game that was played last nights all of us CANES fans are destroyed and had a few nighmares last night.

GO CANES.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NONMWmxm5ss&feature=related

This is old before UNC played GT but the commentators said it just right about defending the option which Miami didn't do, surprize!!

I'm sorry Manny. I know this is supposed to be about basketball. After this, I won't place anything else but basketball.

Halftime thoughts Manny?!!!

after last nite we need a WIN today...GO CANES....OTOWN407...

Good win!!!! Go Canes!

now we'll probably play uconn. manny, what do you think of our chances?

The UConn game will be on Sunday correct?

One concern today Manny is our FT shooting. I watched the game on the computer and was stunned how many FTs our guys missed, even Hurdle and Jack missed which almost never happened last year.

no the game will be tomorrow.

Free throws we were 22 of 30 .733

I'll take that

Our next game is Sunday at 6:00 PM

How many people can we get to wear this around town and to the spring game in 09?

FREE JACORY!

really? i thought it was tomorrow. whatever. we'll still probably be playing uconn. maybe it will be on tv.

When we play UConn on Sunday at 6 PM, will the game be on local TV in Miami? If so, what station? ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, FoxSports, Sunshine? Would love to watch the game.

probably espn. but i found a website to watch the games on. its www.watchbtihoops.com. you can buy a day's worth of games for about $10. it's how i watched the canes today. it works but don't get picky over the quality. hope that's helpful.

Great thread...

GoCanes

yea it gets every game on paradise jam. hopefully it will come in handy when miami likely plays uconn.

FIRE NIX PLEASE!!!!!

The Curse of the OB has begun!!!!!Hahahahaha

The Orange Bowl has now been torn down, and in its place a dedicated baseball-only stadium to house the Florida Marlins baseball team is being built. Despite some protests, the historic stadium was earmarked for demolition when the University of Miami announced that they were moving out of the Orange Bowl after the 2007 season to begin play at Dolphin Stadium in 2008 in a 25-year deal. On November 10, 2007, the University of Miami Hurricanes lost their final game at the Orange Bowl when the University of Virginia defeated Miami 48-0 in the Hurricanes WORST home shutout loss in school history. The Florida International University Golden Panthers won their last game at the Orange Bowl against the University of North Texas Mean Green on December 1st, 2007 by a score of 38-19, snapping a 23-game losing streak.

And thus the OB curse began!!!

Thanks Manny

Football note-
Patrick Nix is not being held accountable.
He may be hindered by the dual qb option but he is horrible. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution had a blogger say Ga Tech had a chance as long as Nix was "calling plays".

NIX NIX

PATRICK NIX IS NOT BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE.. PERIOD

NIX NIX

You are no longer allowed to wear your goofy "305" area code hat (lid) cane fan.
From here forward you are required to wear the new issue "472" hat. You are also required, if you see another "U family member" wearing the same hat, U must immediately throw up a U with enough fervor to make your chain swing sway from your chest. Hollering "representin" is optional.

Are U the scrappy team that hung with Florida for three quarters? No. Are U that shockingly bad team that should have been wearing wigs against GT? No. Are U the average to below average team that threw kangaroo punches with UCF for 60 minutes? Yes.

DEFENSE: How is it possible for a one-dimensional team with absolutely no semblance of a passing game to run for 472 yards? UM’s tackling, abysmal most of the season, was at its worst against Georgia Tech. There doesn’t appear to be a single defensive back on UM’s roster with good tackling skills. Anthony Reddick, in particular, may not want to watch a replay of his performance. Ditto Romeo Davis and Glenn Cook. GRADE: F. (DAY-UMMMM Milian ripping em)

RECRUITING
What Miami fans envision as a recruiting juggernaut could easily crash before it ever comes to fruition. Keep that pissed off indignation thing going with the media Randy. Kids and their parents see it. Continue to call out players Randy. That'll get the recruits interested. If the Dade county recruiting gravy train has a down year, Randy could end up getting smoked in that recruiting cycle. Sure Dade will have it's share of top recruits every year but It's not likely that we'll see another freight train of talent (Miami NW)like the one we saw restocking UM's still somewhat empty cupboard. His emphasis on grabbing local players could backfire on him. A thin talent year in the "472" could easily undo him. The upper echelon coaches are able to flex their muscle at minimum on a regional level, and usually on a national level. Randy does not have that ability.

DEPTH
Yes the cupboard is still somewhat empty. There are some good athletes spread around most of the units. Guys that have the potential to be excellent players in a few years. But the depth of the present team? There is none. And no, depth isn't unproven young guys that have a resume that is little more than tackling or throwing past high schoolers, depth is having experienced FBS players that can step in and get the job done against opponents that will soon be suiting up on Sunday. Will the underclassmen ever be developed by this coaching staff? There has been next to nothing to convince me that this will happen.

LEADERSHIP/PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
Shannon attributed his team's forgettable performance to youth, stating that, "...after the
11th game of the season, the inexperience of this football team finally showed up." -J. Milian
When you read that you should instantly have serious questions about UM's coaching staff. You should have serious questions about the leadership of the top man. Show me where there is significant player development on this team in 2008. It doesn't matter who you recruit if you don't develop your athletes. Randy you've been the head man for 23 games now and there is a growing tide of people want to see you and your assistants on the last train Clarksville. You've had ample time show that this team has at least matured to the fundamentally sound level. It hasn't. What exactly are you doing with your time at the top secret football compound Mr. Shannon?

All Miami fans should end this futile practice of blaming assistant coaches for all the teams ills. They work for the man. They all work for Randy Shannon. If you can't show some significant improvement after 23 games in a moderately competitive conference perhaps you're not cut out for the task.

I'd love to watch your bowl game but I get a headache if I stare at that blue field too long.

I'm Kehoe's Steamer and I approve this message.

472 representin - You must be bored because nobody is going to read all that.

That's the norm at Florida. It's like the ENERGIZER BUNNY, it keeps going and going and going and going...........................

7/2007 Two Florida Gators, a basketball player and a football player have been arrested on drug charges. Authorities arrested Brandon James and Brandon Powell during an undercover drug sting Monday night. Both face charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis.

04/2007 Florida offensive lineman Ronnie Matthew Wilson was arrested Thursday, accused of firing a semiautomatic rifle in the air during a dispute with another man that started in a nightclub.

One website, Every Day Should Be Saturday (EDSBS.com) even keeps a scorecard ranking on football teams with bad acting players and calls it “The Fulmer Cup.” Penn State was No. 1, but likely lost the honor when charges against the four were dropped. Ron Zook’s Illinois team was No. 2, Michigan No. 4, Florida No. 5 and LSU No. 7 at last look.

Florida Ranked #5

12/2007 Florida defensive end Jermaine Cunningham and a former teammate were arrested Wednesday on a misdemeanor battery charge because they allegedly hit a restaurant worker with a sandwich and cups, police said.

Meyer, who has had nine players arrested since January, said he spoke to his team about making better decisions.

05/2008 A University of Florida football player
is accused of using a dead girl's credit card.
Jamar Hornsby turned himself in Friday morning on charges of credit card theft and fraudulent use of a credit card.

11/2008 UF reserve cornerback Jacques Rickerson was arrested at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday morning for allegedly strangling his girlfriend.

11/2008 Ronnie Wilson is in trouble again, According to a sworn complaint filed in Gainesville, Wilson punched two people early Sunday morning after the Gators win against Arkansas. Wilson received his first playing time since 2006 against Arkansas. He faces two misdemeanor charges of assault and battery.

11/2008 GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- GAINESVILLE -- UF backup quarterback Cameron Newton was arrested Friday and charged with stealing a laptop computer.
Newton was charged with burglary, larceny and obstructing justice. The burglary charge is a second-degree felony, and the larceny and obstruction charges are third-degree felonies
Meyer, who has had 10 players arrested since January, said he spoke to his team about making better decisions?????????? nOW IT'S 11 AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE TALK DIDN'T WORK!!!!!!!

Rawpimple, I'll just make a little more noticeable.

Seriously, what are this UF players thinking? Oh, my bad, they don't. Monkey see monkey do, or should I say turdface see turdface do. I'm really surprise with all the distractions they are still in the top 10. It just makes you wonder sometimes.
