Courtside blog: UM 79, Stetson 65 (F)

BANKUNITED CENTER -- Want to get rid of your football blues? Hang out with me as the 22nd-ranked Canes host Stetson today and look to improve to 4-1 on the season. I'll be here to provide you with the highlights. Frank Haith's team is the best that UM now has. Might as well jump on the bandwagon.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS/THOUGHTS...
Stetsonhatters> Lance Hurdle has officially replaced Eddie Rios in the starting lineups. Today he gets his first start of the season. Rios started the first four games.
> When Miami comes back out of the timeout, Haith will switch five starters for five reserves. It's not because he's upset with their play. It's the depth of his team. Dwayne Collins has four early points to lead the Canes, who got a three-pointer from James Dews to take an 11-8 lead with 15:53 left in the half.
> The Canes hit a hold patch, going without a basketball for about four minutes. But Cyrus McGowan went on a personal 6-0 run to get the offense going, showing his range with a three-pointer and his strength with a dunk in the post. James Dews capped the 9-0 Canes run with a three-pointer with 11:17 left.
> Stetson trimmed UM's lead to 20-16 with a pair of Garfield Blair free throws. But Miami has responded with a 10-0 run behind two Eddie Rios three-pointers and a beautiful Rios to Collins assist for reverse slam dunk.
> HALFTIME NUMBERS -- UM is outrebounding the Hatters 19-14. Garfield Blair leads all scorers with 15 points. Cyrus McGowan has 9 points and James Dews had 8 for Miami, which led by as many 16 with 4:52 left in the half.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS/THOUGHTS...
> The Canes just haven't been able to really pull away from the Hatters this time around. Last year, Miami beat Stetson 89-53. Frank Haith talked about how this Stetson team was much improved and older and more experienced and you can see it. Senior Garfield Blair has 19 points to lead Stetson. Cyrus McGowan has 14 points to lead the Canes.
> Jack McCinton by the way was held scoreless in the first half. He took just two shots. He finally scored on a three-pointer with 17:35 left in the second half.

GO CANES!!!

Damn, what do think needs to happen with the football team in the off season??? Keep nix or drop him? Or is it still just a lack of playmakers/OL???

TO BE A GREAT COACH, YOU MUST HAVE A SUPORTTING STAFF! Nix ,Mcgriff, Hurtt, Swasey is not that champion staff you are looking for...

Hi Manny

Think everyone is drowning their sorrows

Hey Manny,

I've heard the argument to give Nix a chance, but I'm terrified that Nix might be that mediocre coordinator who can get the job done from time to time, but can never develop our talent to the fullest. We have good QBs and receivers now, I'd hate to see them flounder in a mediocre system. What do you think?

Jeez, Rios is showing up Hurdle!

321, you are right on. Have you been banned by lamespace for saying something negative as well? Our got better during the middle of the season, sort of, and then significantly regressed. I don't buy this "we're so young crap." Lots of team have young players and they do a lot better. We just look bad out there. That's two years for Dandy. There needs to be some significant improvement for him to hold his job. He's another Charlie Weis without the Patriots success in his pocket. Good coaches turn it around soon. Two years in and we look the same as Coker's last year. Who's really better on our team? James is great and a few of our young players have some promise. Few players have really shown progress and we got blasted the last two weeks.

ponce...no 321 is in like Flynn.

U are the LOSER!!!

321 the Strength Coach Swasey started at UM in 1997 and all the former players come back to train with him so I doubt that he is the problem

The team needs more quality experienced players. The members of the Senior and Junior classes can not compete with the Hurricanes opponents. Therefore, Randy Shannon and his staff are forced to play too many freshmen. It's one thing to have a few like Alabama, its another for half the team to be Freshmen. Look at todays game; the worst performances were by upper classmen. It is not reasonable to expect this team to consistently beat more experienced teams. Overall, this year was a huge improvement. REMEMBER LAST YEAR AGAINST NC STATE - KIRBY FREEMAN COMPLETE ONE PASS THE ENTIRE GAME. Like everyone else, I am impatient and wanted to see them play better in the last two games. However, I do believe this team will be much better in the next few years.

Fire Shannon Now!!!

If you look closely at RS recruits, they're not so great. Lot's of hype for being good in HS. That means squat in big time college football

from 5-7 to 7-5 but is this team really any better?

Shannon was Cokers recruiting coordinator. Look at the overall depth/talent at UM. Shannon is getting a free ride.

WHAT IS A TRUE FAN?

A TRUE FAN SUPPORTS THE TEAM AFTER A LOSE, NOT JUST AFTER A BANDWAGON WIN AND THIS, WAS A TOUGH LOSE.

NOW IS THE TIME THE GUYS NEED SUPPORT, NOT YOUR QUIC-TONGUED REMARKS

We have a great group of young men. Loss to GTech -- no fluke. Very tough team outplayed Georgia between the hedges.

Just kids getting young -- factor in injuries and and AJ not traveling -- and look at next years class -- next season will be fun.

Canes football team looks great. I have no problem seeing this team in the championship hunt in 3 years.

BREAKING NEWS:

Defensive Tackle form Miami Northwestern Bulls Todd Chandler commits to the "U"!

The Canes will be fine, just need for some time to gel as a unit. We can debate about some coaches need to be let go, but that will set the team back a year or two New system. Both lines were weak at times, at times lack of pressure from the d-line , and o-line was not moving people and holding up on pass protection. I agree, we need to settle on a Qb, start James at Rb, he's more physical, Coop need to return punts. It may sound crazy i think Baily should be at Mlb. We give up something with speed on the edges with being smaller and lighter when we play a physical o-line. But it all comes down to us getting bigger Dl/OL to stop the run and open up holes.

Who is laughing harder? FSU? UF? GT? probably the Wolfpack is STILL laughing "last" What an incredible moron U are. YOu get waxed two weeks in a row to end the season and you're talking about laughing last. One of your boys was talking about being in a bar in Raleigh last night and everyone was laughing at the canes. Keep your head in the sand phrase tool.

Wow...did we just have a hurricane?

At least F$U got killed and won't play in the ACC Championship!!!

"Misery loves company"

When the Gators become men enough to play Miami every year, I will pay attention to their comments. Until then, they are just an empty program with no guts.

Anybody calling for Shannon's head is an absolute idiot. The man brings in a truckload of incredible young talent (don't tell me that Travis Benjamin, Sean Spence, Jacory Harris, Laron Byrd, Aldarius Johnson, Davon Johnson, Thearon Collier, Marcus Robinson, and Marcus Forston haven't impressed you...) and notched some impressive wins.

Yeah, the team wasn't prepared for Georgia Tech, but that's a great offensive system, and the Yellow Jackets played their first truly flawless game of the season against us. But remember, besides Ole Miss, it's Miami that's played Florida the toughest this year - and that was with a cast of freshmen playing in their second game and a quarterback starting in his first.

So give the man two or three more years. If we're still 7-5 then, then burn him at the stake. That would be a CRIME, with all this great talent. But right now, he's building - and I'm confident that he'll be able to continue improving.

Now Pat Nix is a different story. Him I wouldn't mind losing - although yet another OC switch wouldn't help this young offense trying to find an identity...

Back to basketball - What do you think the turnout will be like for the Ohio State game, Manny?

I would hope it would be decent, considering how high-profile the game is. It would be embarassing to have a half-empty house playing on ESPN.

Not to mention the fact that this is our first chance to avenge the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. I will be out with all of my friends, in full force...

Hey, everybody, since things have come down, and we can look forward to a bowl game unlike last year. I just have a few things to say. We need a solid running back. Cooper good running back, but can't rely on him all the time. JJ he is just fragile. Offense of line if we can get those natural offense of lineman at least 3 or 4, we will be in better shape. The DB's we need to develop the ones we got, and bring at least a few more that can contribute right away. Special teams had a lot of potential, but never really did anything great. Especially after T. Benjamin got hurt. Come to think about it did we block any kicks this year? I know bosher did a really good job handling all the kicking duties, but we also had our flaws too. Just all around the special team was very inconsistent. WR's need to catch the ball. I don't care if it's Marve or Harris throwing the ball. These kids need to learn how to catch it. Can't blame everything on Nix. I really think if we get that all around running back with some offense of line help our offense will be a lot better than this year. Line backers and Defense of line just like the DB's we need to develop what we got, and plug in a few holes. I'm actually really excited of the DL we have coming back alone with our LBs. I hope coach Shannon understands this team needs a leader in offense, and starts we the qb. I just hope he can make up his mind next year, and just stick to one. Have the other one ready for moop up duties.

Can everyone stop talking about the Canes football team and talk abou the basketball team. I just don't get this town. Nobody seems to care about the Canes basketball team when it is obvious they are going to be good this year. Stop complaining about the football season and start looking forward to a team who comes to play each game and plays hard. We have Ohio State on Tuesday this week...big game on ESPN where we can be reconized nationally.

Well said, Troy (and Manny): this BB team is the real deal. Kudos Coach Haith! Now let's get our house jumpin' tomorrow night (can't wuss out in public on ESPN). Go Canes!
