Georgia Tech loss a humbling experience

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands -- University of Miami coach Randy Shannon said earlier this week it would likely take his defense about a quarter to get adjusted to the speed of Georgia Tech's Triple Option offense. He miscalculated. The Hurricanes never did.

And the result was one of the worst defensive nights in Canes' history. The Yellow Jackets ran through, around and past Miami Thursday night, shredding the Canes for 472 yards rushing in a 42-23 blowout victory that hurt badly. The most heartbreaking part for fans of the U is that the Canes had just returned to the national polls this week (for the first time since 2006) and were in position to punch their ticket to the ACC Title game. Now, the ranking is sure to be history and those hopes of reaching the conference title game will require a few lucky bounces to go UM's way.

While I'm interested in hearing what Shannon has to say tomorrow, I wanted to pass along my thoughts and observations and get your thoughts once U have been able to cool down.

> THE BIGGEST FAILURE: We all knew coming in Georgia Tech's triple option offense was not only one of the best in the country, but Anthony_reddickthat it was going to be a major challenge for the Hurricanes to stop. While the lead story is that the Yellow Jackets piled up the second-most yards allowed on the ground all-time by a UM team (Auburn had 536 rushing yards in 1944), they basically did it with a rag-tag group of guys. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt wasn't even close to 100 percent, yet still torched the Canes. Jonathan Dwyer, who didn't even play in the second half, had 128 yards on 10 carries. ESPN's announcers said before the game the Yellow Jackets were already thin along their line and in the second quarter put in a former running back who weighed all of 254 pounds.

Defensive line coach Clint Hurtt told me earlier this week Shannon first began throwing the triple option at the defense during Miami's bye-week two weeks ago. But it's obvious the Canes were completely fooled by it. Romeo Davis was completely out of position on the big runs up the middle. And Miami's cornerbacks never really got into help. What I'm trying to decide in my head is what this really says about UM's defense. Before the blowout loss Thursday, Miami had been doing a pretty good job stopping the run since they got lit up by Florida State. In three of their five wins, UM had held their opponents to 78 yards or less on the ground. I think what Thursday's loss showed us was just how much this team needs the right kind of matchup to win games on defense. When Miami faces option running quarterbacks, it struggles, especially sticking to assignments. Thursday was quite literally the worst kind of matchup for Miami because it had to guard against four guys running the football on each play. That's too much for an overachieving linebacking corps (who has one real star in Sean Spence) that sorely misses Colin McCarthy.

> THE BIGGEST CRITICISM: Offensive coordinator Patrick Nix has long been under the gun here for his playcalling -- much like any Patrick_nixoffesive coordinator in the country who isn't winning or scoring 50 points. I've been 50-50 on Nix during his time here because I thought he's done some really good things and some really bad things with this offense. But nothing has been worse in my eyes than a few decisions he made Thursday. There were at handful of plays when Miami had 3rd down and 2 yards or less. And each time, he lined up his quarterback in the shotgun. While I understand Georgia Tech's front four could be one of the best in the country and obviously did a great job shutting down Miami's running game Thursday, I find it disturbing Nix left all the pressure on his quarterbacks to make tough plays on those downs. He's preached -- along with Shannon -- that wouldn't be the case.

But ultimately, what bothers me most about what Nix has done this season is this: in 11 games he still hasn't been able to figure out what offense he wants UM to be. Each week, it's a different look. One week, its Marve and Harris running sprint option against Wake Forest. The next, it's five wide, spread it out against Virginia Tech. We were told at the start, this was going to be a team in which Javarris James and Graig Cooper were going to carry the load. We were told the strength of the team was the offensive line. What is Miami's offensive identity? Honestly, I couldn't tell you.

> THE HOT TOPIC - QUARTERBACKS: Speaking of the quarterbacks, the final stats will tell you Jacory Harris (13-18, 162, 2 TDs, 1 INT) had a better night than Robert Marve (10-20, 121 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT). And while it's a fact Harris picked up most of Robert_marvethose stats in garbage time when the game had already been decided, he once again looked like the more cool, calm passer in the pocket. While Marve made some amazing plays, avoiding sacks and then finding receivers downfield, it always seems to me when Marve is in the game Miami's offense as a whole feels flushed, frenetic and frustrated. Maybe it's just me, but everytime Harris is in there, he just looks a lot cooler, calmer and commanding than Marve. I highly doubt Shannon will go back on his word this coming week and start Harris in front of Marve in Miami's regular season final at N.C. State. But I've at least seen enough through 11 games to know who I like better as Miami's quarterback.

> THE Z-FACTOR -- MISSING BENJAMIN: Miami didn't lose Thursday because it lost Travis Benjamin (again) to an ankle injury (again) in the first quarter. But there's no doubt this team has missed Benjamin's presence on the field. Those long, uplifting, get the team excited returns Benjamin used to provide aren't happening anymore and the explosive receiver opponents were forced to cover because of his speed is also gone. That's hurting Miami much worse than U think. Benjamin is a special player. And when he's around, he makes his teammates better.

> THE BOTTOMLINE: The ultimate feeling I got when the 41-23 beatdown came to an end was this -- this UM football team is good, but not as good as that five-game winning streak and all that ACC title talk made us believe. Don't get me wrong, what Randy Shannon has accomplished this season with a group of young freshman and sophomores deserves credit. Most experts figured Miami would be 4-7 now and not 7-4. It's found some amazing leaders for the future, guys who can make this team very good in years to come. But this football team -- the one playing in 2008 -- has simply been a product of overachievement.

Matt_bosherHere's what UM's success this season has been built on: an amazing season out of Matt Bosher (UM doesn't beat Virginia Tech or Wake Forest without him); much faster returns from its receivers and quarterbacks than was expected (UM doesn't come back to beat Virginia and Duke without Jacory Harris, Aldarius Johnson and company); and a pretty good coaching job by defensive coordinator Bill Young (who worked wonders for five weeks turning what had been a bad defense into one that did enough to win some tough games against decent ACC competition).

But there are still some rather large holes on this team that have just been covered up by overachievement. Miami's offensive line sorely needs at least another two to three more Jason Foxes (they've been getting away with project guys like Chris Rutledge for too long). The secondary needs major work -- especially at corner and free safety (Bruce Johnson is a great guy, not a great corner). The defensive tackles -- the young guys who are good and not the older overachievers -- still need to grow up (Joe Joseph, Dwayne Hendricks are average at best). Ditto for the linebackers (the Arthur Browns, Ramon Buchanon and Jordan Futche's on this team). Thursday night was a tough, humbling experience for Miami's young football team. But really, it should have also been for U too.

I came down to ATL for the game and visiting family. Terrible feeling in the stadium. Left at the end of the 3rd. Just terrible job up front and stopping the run in the box. Couldn't do anything to stop it. Just one of the losses have to live with. Questions: What's the scenarios that Miami can still end up in the ACC Title Game? Is the Southern Miss vs. Miami basketball game televised anywhere or how can I can catch the potential Miami v UConn game?

A: The basketball game can be purchased online... visit http://watchbtihoops.com/.

As for the scenario, ESPN's Heather Dinich did the research last week. According to her, Miami needs to finish a three-way tie for first with Georgia Tech and Virginia. So, UM needs to root for Virginia to win its final two games including beating Virginia Tech (who owns the tiebreaker with a 4-1 division should it finished tied with UM and Georgia Tech) and for North Carolina to lose one of its final two games (Duke or N.C. State).

There is nothing wrong with overachievement... it should be noted that every ranked team that has played on Thursday this year (Maybe not every but its close to it) has lost.... So I wasn't too happy playing on Thursday ranked away... Yes its just numbers but it seems to be a curse. Shannon has done a marvelous job rebuilding Coker's mess.... The fact that we had a shot at the ACC champ is a credit to Shannon.. the only losses being to a good UNC team (They lost their top offensive weapon after playing UM.. had they not lost him they would be in the champ game), FSU which is obivoulsy a rival game and they are pretty good... although Ponder looks a lot like a future Chris Rix which gets me excited... and UF who looks like they will be playing for a NC>.. so I think Shannon is doing an amazing job.. And to those who think Shannon sucks I will say this.. Give him a few more years... Shannon can recruit like crazy. If I was rebuilding a program I would always take a great recruiter over a great coach... because should Shannon fail on the coaching level you aren't screwed because the shelves are still stocked... Its kind of like the Ron Zook situation in UF... he blew games but he could recruit like crazy... when he left that team was stacked and ready to win. I'm proud of this team like i'm proud of the Phins... Rebuilding an image that was greatly tarnished by poor decision makers...

this loss helps miami more than you'll ever know

Their more people on this VENT than on the U's D. hahahahahahahahahahaahahah. GT is done and you can't get to the big game before GT does because we need the samething to happen that you do and we have the TIE BREAKER against the U. hahahahahaahahahahahahahahaahhahahahahahahaha.

THE U WAS DOMINATED... I WILL EXPLAIN HOW LATER... ITS STILL ALL BOUT THE U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO CANES!!!

Man, I wish there was some way I could play basketball outside in the rain, and not get wet. Wouldn't that be great?

While we were dominated in virtually every facet of the game, what really disturbed me was all the talk of cold weather leading up to Thursday night. I got the feeling going into this that the young players were intimidated by the prospect of playing in frigid temperatures. They certainly performed like they were frozen stiff.

472 yards rushing isnt too bad.

What a joke. Welcome back to reality. Let me know when I was right about Randy Shannon being in WAYYYYYYYY over his head. Ill give you another few years of embarrassing defeats to figure it out.

Embarrassing defeats under Randy Shannon...Just 2 years:

Virginia 48-0 last game ever at the Orange Bowl
Oklahoma BLOWOUT last year
Basically the entire 2007 season where the team quit
Losing to both FLorida and FSU in the same season something that has not been done in a LONG TIME
Average Georgia Tech rushing for more yards on the Canes since World War 2 and blowing them out of the water on a national stage.

Oh well back to irrelevance and ESPNU.

How could Nix be under heat????

This team was completely unprepared moreso on DEFENSE than offense. 472 yards rushing!!!!! Is that Patrick Nix's fault. When does Shannon get any blame here? This is his team. He is the head coach. Everyone loves to make excuses for him. Last year it was Coker. Than it was the D-coordinator and he was fired. Now it is youth and Nix. What will it be next year?

The truth is this one falls squarely on the head coach. He knew the triple option was coming. This team was as unprepared of a team I have ever seen. He still is switching QBs which is beginning to irritate the hell out of me. Stick with one Shannon! Be a head coach and make a decision!!!

This one is on the head coach.

How about Marcus Forston getting benched in the second half? He was dominated last night in the first half? So much for all the hype with him. Who would have thought Sean Spence was going to be the best player out of the group?

First off, Nix is an issue b/c, like Manny pointed out, and any fan can see, the offense has no personality or rhythm. This is a problem b/c I, and I'm sure all Canes fans, don't want to waste a few of this talented recruiting class's years waiting for the team's offensive coordinator to grow and mature. A school of Miami's stature should have an established playcaller, one who has a plan to nuture and exploit the growth and maturity of guys like Harris, Coop, Benjamin, etc.

Which brings up the biggest issue of all--and thank you Manny for finally saying what most people have been thinking. Jacory Harris is the better quarterback. Aside from Harris's physical qualities--he is just as mobile as Marve, he throws a better touch pass than Marve (remember Marve's awful fade pass on 3rd-and-goal against V. Tech; Harris has completed three of those for TDs this season), he stands tall in the pocket and goes through is progressions--more importantly, the offense really does look calmer, more controlled and more inspired when Harris is in the game. Sure, Jacory is sometimes too cool (his INT last night: the pass should have been thrown a beat earlier and a bit more outside where only his WR could catch it) and confident, but he is never frantic. He should be the starter and should play the whole game.

I understand but can no longer sympathize with Randy Shannon and this QB situation. The head coach HAS to make a decision on a starter, and if that means the team loses one of the QBs to a transfer, so be it. The U has A.J. Highsmith from TX coming in next fall--the QB position will be fine.

But think of it this way: If either Marve or Harris were to consider transferring and took feelers from different colleges, who would be in more demand? Harris. No doubt.

I have nothing against Marve. But there's been a months-long QB competition this season and it has clear winner. It shows on the field.

few things for U to ponder:

1st - as always GO CANES!!!!

2nd - oUr defensive "tackling" is horrendoUs, as big & strong as the g tech gUys are they hav to b hit high & wrapped Up

3rd - we didn't play assignment football last night which caUsed Us to be embarrassed

4th - bill yoUng has to make in game changes to be able to stop whatever offense we face (why rUn oUr 4-3 against a rUn team that we can stop by lining Up in a 5 man front?)

5th - these kids will take this loss hard & Use it as motivation against nc state

6th - Coach Shannon has got to make decisions NOW

lastly - nix has to go - his "playcalling" is so vanilla i can defend it. he looked like he was still the oc for tech last nite rather than the U (anybody know where tony franklin is?)

oUr CANES have overachieved and we ALL know that, bUt don't forget that we are 7-4 and Coach Shannon deserves a lot of credit for that. the U is on the rite track, we jUst played a better football team in g tech last night, so continUe to be sUpportive. i also want U people on here to Understand that oUr BABY CANES do read these blogs (a fact that i have been shown) regardless of what they say aboUt reading this stUff.

GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miami has no chance to win the division. They will lose any in any tiebreaking scenario that is possible. The only two way tie possible involving them would be with Georgia Tech, which they would lose. All possible four way or three way ties involving Virginia or Virginia Tech would be won by Virginia or Virginia Tech. A tie between Miami, Georgia Tech and North Carolina would be won by North Carolina.

Ok, wrong again. Miami would win a three way tie with Virginia and Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech would be eliminated with a worse division record than Virginia and Miami, then Miami would win head to head vs. Virginia.

Manny... It's an embarrassing tough loss for all of us to swallow but the team feels it the most...

This was a TOTAL TEAM loss, starting with the coaches, not one or two players.

GT had a great game plan and GT's offense ran their key blocking assignments to perfection and we were either caught out of position all night long or looking at the wrong players, play after play. It got to the point, a blind man could find the path...

Soooo, give credit where credits do... GT kicked our azzzez on both sides of the ball and we were not prepared.

Their Defense had our number.
One thing that I did notice about GT's defense, that I give them credit for,(that we should do more often, instead of a fixed position before the snap) was the constant movement and switching around of LB's in blitzing positions, on and off the line... it definitely rattled Marve and it showed he wasn't sure of a pass rush or not and since last week, when Kelly (On National TV!) pointed out Marve's tendency to eye the 1st receiver... It became all to obvious on the interception and several near INT's throughout the game... Thanks Kelly, for your keen insight for pointing it out!... Bozo!

On the up side... All is not lost. We're still learning and we are tied for the lead, not on the bottom looking up...

Go Canes in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Before the crazy's start... suggest a 24 hour cooling off period to reflect how far we have come, not how far we have dropped.

Cat5

First off I would like to say for every real fan lets stay positive Ok OUR season is not over and we still have two more games left, NC St. and our bowl game. We will win next in Raleigh and we should win our bowl game. Here are my thoughts on the game:

Nix has to go he is too predictable, switches up the offense way too much and is not consistent enough. So I will hopefully not see Nix again next year. Second off the sole reason we got beat last night is because we have terrible, little frail corners. Did U see how they were being manhandled by the GT Wide receivers? We need 6ft2 and 6ft3 big physical corners who can shed their blocks. Chavez Grant, Bruce Johnson and DVD are butt. Third Jacory should and WILL BE THE QB NEXT YEAR. Marve is too small and makes bad decisions all the time, sound familiar? "Kyle Wright" Fourth if Jacory could of scored on that first half drive where he threw a pick trying to find Byrd, who knows what the turnout who have been. Why do I say that U might ask, because people scoring td's gets our defense hype. If U were on defense would U feel like playing when U know the offense just cant and will not score. Fifth who cares about an ACC championship this season last time I checked we were 5-7 last season and played in no bowl game. Lets concentrate on next year and 2010 where I predict we will win it all. Sixth stop bashing Shannon people we has done a tremendous job and it is not his fault we got manhandled up front and our db's looked like highschoolers. Also yes I am officially in support of Nix being fired. How in the world do U call a shotgun formation on 4th and 1? Even my girlfriend was like what is he doing? What does that tell U? Nuff said I am done venting, lets beat the crap out of NC. State and get ready to win a bowl game. Shannon please start Jacory for the WHOLE GAME, Marve needs to transfer. Time for a change..

First off let's chill a bit. We lost but let's not blow it out of proportion. None of us truly expected to play for an ACC title game this year. It's just one loss and though we got crushed it doesn't mean isn't part of the process. Remember that loss to McNabb and Syracuse when we got lit 66-10 or something crazy when the big east championship was on the line? What did we do the next game? We beat #2 UCLA. It happens.

Two things I will not stop complaining about. I've said this most of the season and that's Nix needing to go and not starting Jacory.

Harris deserves a chance to start in Marve's role. Meaning he should get a chance to start and then Marve come in for a few series like the current rotation. You have 2 young QB's and it is the coaches job to see who is the best one. It's only fair that Harris gets that same chance.

I have and never will like Nix. He is and always will be a scab of a offensive coordinator. He has never achieved anything. His formations are very questionable and his playcalling is worse. How is it that you run a spread offense but you are never attacking the defense? Have you seen the rest of the spread offenses in this country that have much less talent than us? On 2nd or 3rd and 1 he is ALWAYS in the shotgun. I hate that. Then he hands the ball off to our speed guy (Coop) in the shotgun to pick up the hard nose yards. Coop puts his head down and runs into the back of the offensive line or jukes and loses yardage in those cases. James should be getting the ball there. Coop is the open field guy and a terrific weapon but he lacks the short yardage power and vision of James. It just pisses me off to no end that EVERYONE says this and yet there is nothing done about it. Fans, former coaches, and the announcers say it and still the light bulb doesn't come on.

Do you want to know why we have no identity? It's because Nix doesn't have one. He doesn't know what kind of offense he wants to run. I don't want to hear about youth when I see with my own eyes Harris being successful. Yes he will make a few mistakes but the kid has the command of this offense. Give him a chance....and please Randy lets get a REAL offensive coordinator in here.

Manny,

Good lookin' on the VIslands basketball link. We all need a SoMiss and UConn win this weekend. As for your thoughts on the blog - spot on.

UM fans need to relax when we win, and relax when we lose. We're not that bad, but we're not that good. Harris and Javaris James have to play, shelf Marve and Coop. That's the most obvious. The defense is still very good, they looked lost, not overmatched. Against traditional defenses they will do well again. I like Bill Young.

As for Shanon and Nix? Shanon is recruiting the snot out of this state. He is also a "sophmore" and I believe he, just like a player deserves some time to grow. He was a great defensive coordinator, so very well could develop into a great HC.

Nix is harder to defend. The offense did not lose us this game. And Nix is creative, and many of his gadget plays work. But Manny is right, there is no ID for this offense, and USC, and Florida, and Miami teams from the past -- these great teams run consistent, pro-style formations and plays. That gadget stuff gets old, and ultimately gets stuffed in the games that matter. He has to change his philosophy.

Otherwise, 'Canes should do well against NCState, and Hoops is going to have a good year. Go Canes.

Georgia Tech I still give you NO RESPECT AND BY THE WAY THAT OFFENSE THEY RUN IS STRAIGHT CHEESE. All U online Ncaa Football gamers know what I mean, did U see all those illegal blocks?

Georgia Tech gets no respect!

I know we're all frustrated by what happened yesterday, but in a way, as fans I think we'll be better off for it. As much as I try to discount it, there is simply no way we should be competing for a conference championship when our best players are freshmen and so many of them are actually major contributors. I haven't been drinking the kool-aid like some on this blog, but even I got a little ahead of myself after the winning streak. Unfortunately, there isn't one junior or senior on this team whose a pro prospect (albeit I still hold out hope for JJ if/when he's healthy). I think they're all good guys, but we're not ready to compete for the top stop yet. In fact, I now realize that while we should improve next year, our best players will still be sophmores at best.

And after looking at GTech's offensive stats in their prior game, it further made me realize that I should have seen last night coming. They had 326 yards on the ground against UNC. Let me repeat that...they had 326 yards on the ground against the team that will likely represent the coastal winner in the conference championship. They then had a week and a half to gear up for us, so I give them all the credit in the world. In the first half, it seemed that we were in position, but guys couldn't wrap up and bring the ball carrier down, which lead to the 30 yard runs instead of a 7 yard gain. By the second half, it seemed that guys were so unsure and fearful of the long runs that it spelled disaster on virutally any play that GTech ran.

I'm still proud of this team and feel we have a bright future.

NIX SUCKS AND STEVEY WONDER CAN SEE THAT JACORY IS BETTER THAN MARVE.

Manny, you noted the superiority of Harris' stats over Marve's from last night. It's worth noting that he achieved those with fewer drives. Quite frankly, I don't understand why Marve came in to start the 2nd half. Harris' ONE DRIVE demonstrated that he was better at running the O. Whose call is that? Shannon's or Nix's?

I really don't think Nix has to go. While there are certain play calls that I don't always agree with, i applaud him for doing so much with all this young talent and keeping two QBs playing.

Just because it is easy to run an offense on your xbox doesn't mean it is that easy in real life. I think that this offense has shown signs of life and Nix wouldn't be under any ehat if we didn't drop so many passes.

I think Jacory should be the starter. He seems to have a calmness about him much like Dorsey. I really think another year with Nix will pay dividends.

Changing OCs every two years is not the way to go. It never works. And as long as we drop passes, it won't matter who the OC is.

By the way, it still counts as just 1 loss.....don't blow it out of proportion.

i love my team & yes it sUx to lose especially like we did last night bUt the fUtUre is bright. i, like U, didnt expect to be playing for the acc title this year, however, its a great place to be @ this point in Coach Shannon's tenUre. Coach Shannon has this program headed in the right direction and if yoU know anything aboUt football yoU can see that. last nite was embarrasing yes bUt it was not the end of the world (beat nc state & finish 8-4). the thing we mUst do is stay sUpportive of oUr team and get behind them all the time - not jUst when we win!! Coach Shannon is doing a great job & so are the "kids". get off Marve - anyone remember the wake or va tech games?? he is a 19yr old kid that is playing in his first year of major college football - he is going to make mistakes. Jacory is a great qb & brings an added persona to this team - U mUst remember when he is an 18yr old kid & when he makes mistakes U gUys get on him to - chill oUt folks. the comparison of Marve to kyle "wrong" is totallu UnjUstified & very offensive. oUr problem is patrick nix - he has to go. in case any of U were wondering www.firepatricknix.com is still available!!!!

As always GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jacory needs to start! If Shannon remains stubborn on the QB situation, it could cost him his job down the road.

Nix has to go. 4th and 1 from the shotgun, when you have JJ available, is an outrage!

It's not "armchair" QBing if everyone (announcers, fans, reporters, etc.) sees it! Jacory can move this offense better than Marve. We need to develop this advantage with the few remaining games we have this year so he is "seasoned" for next year!

Randy needs to stop trying to save face, and start saving this teams arse!

Go 'canes!

My biggest question is why?

Why Miami has gone down hill?

Why are our guys not as physically imposing then other teams?

Why are we struggling when we are not even on probation?

Why we cant get top notch coaching here anymore?

Why Randy Shannon lets Nix just do whatever he wants with this offense?

And maybe Randy Shannon wasnt that good of a defensive coordinator he was just lucky to have talent!

Manny,

I was a critic of Nix earlier in the year, but I don't think the problem is play calling.

The problem is two (2) young QB's...Marve looks very uncomfortable in the offense and is like Kirby Freeman. Harris needs to put on 20lbs of muscle, because he has no "zip" on the ball....

To me, that is the biggest gripe. The offense moves when Harris is in there, and with Marve- they seem to struggle to make 1st downs.

Could Nix be a better OC? Yes, but you can say that about anybody doing their job. There are two things Miami needs to do with the offense next year. A. Diversify the Running plays, they seem to only have 5 running plays, 10 if you run to the other side of the formation. B. Get someone to work with the QB's mechanics, because their mechanics are breaking down under pressure.

So, as a former Critic of Nix. I will say, he deserves more help. He should spend time with 'Chud or CJ in the off-season to diversify his knowledge of Pro offenses so that he can incorporate it into Miami's offense next year.

My philosophy still stands, "less spread, and more pro"

Also WHY is Cooper running the ball on 3 and short and Baby J running the ball on 1st and long? Shouldnt it be the other way around?!?!?!?!

Also WHY is our Middle Linebacker Glenn Cook has a body type like a punter?

Manny, how much do you attribute the lack of offensive identity to having 2 QBs with different skill sets? Does Nix have a playbook to play to Marve's strengths (stronger arm & more mobility) and one for Harris (composure/pocket presence)?

great minds think alike r-dub...

A lot of Cane fans should do a self imposed 48 hour no posting rule!

Because there are so many of you that are letting your emotions distort the reality. This team can win it's final game and go 8-4. Find me a fan that would not have loved that to start the season and I will show you a fan with no common sense.

This team, the players and coachs....ALL THE COACHES are doing a great job. Improve this team by 3 wins with all these kids playing is simply amazing.

I'm really not one inclined to talk smack...but when you Canes fans come over to our (Gators) blog on here and talk so much junk, it has to come back and haunt you.

I watched that game objectively and you were outmatched in almost every facet of the game. Someone on Cote's blog actually said the Canes would be a top 10 team next year. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? You'll be lucky to make the Top 25 next year and never should've been in it in the first place this season.

I like Randy, I've never had anything against the Canes even though you all seem to hate on the Gators for no good reason other than jealously, but you guys need to know your role right now.

You are a rebuilding team, not a built team. You are young and learning. Randy's not going to do it over night. The sooner the fans realize that, cut him a little bit of slack, and stop worrying about other teams out of your conference (Gators, for example) the easier it will be.

a realisst, are U serioUs??????

WHY - here are the answers:

1 - gone downhill dUe to larry coker not recrUiting so fla & letting all the talent go elsewhere (he single handedly pUshed oUr program back 7-10 years)

2 - oUr gUys ARE as physically impossing as others - we jUst don't have the depth right now dUe to injUry, inexperience, or whatever

3 - we are 7-4 & i dont really call that strUggling bUt if U do then my response is this to U - look @ oUr roster & see how many 18/19/20 yr old kids are playing in their 1st or 2nd year of college football (even a realilst can see that)

4 - we have great coaching here. if we didnt then all these awesome freshmen woUld not be in orange/green or we woUld not have bill yoUng as oUr d/c (we wont even mention nix here)

5 - thats 1 i dont know the answer too sorry - U got me on that 1 (maybe he wants him to continUe to look like a clown caUse he has already tried to help & nix does what he wants)

6 - saying that Coach Shannon was lUcky & not that good of a d/c basically makes U an IDIOT

As always GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Realisst, I agree on the RB issue...as for Cook, I have no problem with his body. It is built for speed (ideal for Bill Young's blitz pkgs). They key is for the D-Tackles to keep the O-line hogs off of him to shoot the gaps...whether due to inexperience or schemes, it didn't happen last night.

41 - 23 (OUCH):

let's face it people we jUst got oUtplayed by a team that wanted it more - plain and simple!!!

all is not lost so let's show Up & sUpport oUr team vs nc state.

As always GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Adam, most Cane fans hate Gator fans because you are smug and arrogant. Most walk and talk like they are the cream of the crop and have been for the last 25 years.

I am not saying YOU, I am saying most Gator fans. I have 3 close friends who are Gators. All three of them sent me multiple text messages last night making fun of the Canes. Keep in mind, I said NOTHING when Ole Miss beat the mighty Gators. but they felt compelled to go out of their way to send messages.

That is why I hate the Gators. Nothing to do with jealousy.

Hello Hurricane Nation, I know I haven't been on here in awhile, but I have to say something about what happened last nite. 1st let me start off by saying yes it was a collective lost last nite, not just the defense, not just the play calling but a collective lost.... with that said: Patrick Nix Sucks!!! Yes Bill Young needs to take some of the blame because he should've played a 46 defense with everyone in the box except for 1 safety, however he is doing his best without talent, the dline is too young and will get better with time, however this loss is mainly because we couldn't stop the run, but its also because Patrick Nix sucks as a play caller!!! I do agree he has called some good calls this year, as well as some very questionable calls, I am not coming on here now to bash him because like Manny said I to have been 50/50 on Nix, but I want to ask this question to the Hurricane nation: Isn't it Ironic that everytime we play Ga Tech nix's playcalling get more suspect each year, I do not want to begin 2 think that he is getting payed to lose games for us against his former bosses, but u have to question it. Example: short passes and runs up the middle out of the shotgun, PREDICTABLE PLAYCALLING, (Even the Commentators mentioned we have no identity on offense and its 3rd and 1 4th and 1 and we are in the shotgun??? Wtf?! (BIGGEST REASON, MARVE CAN'T READ A DEFENSE TO SAVE HIS LIFE, JACORY GETS IN THERE AND LEADS US DOWN DA FIELD AND WE SCORE AND U TAKE HIM OUT AND PUT MARVE BACK IN, YES I UNDERSTAND MARVE IS THE STARTER BUT U HAD NO PROBLEM TAKING MARVE OUT IN THE DUKE AND VIRGINIA GAME AFTER HE THREW A PICK. AND U CAN'T SAY YOU PULLED JACORY AFTER HIS PICK BECAUSE HE DROVE US DOWN DA FIELD ON THE 2ND DRIVE, SO THIS LEADS ME 2 BELIEVE THAT U SEE JACORY IS THE BETTER QB AND U TAKE HIM OUT OF THE GAME B/C WITH HIM IN WE HAVE A CHANCE 2 BEAT YOUR BELOVED GTECH, THEN WHEN MARVE IS FINISHED STINKING IT UP, YOU PUT JACORY BACK IN THE GAME IN THE 4TH QUARTER WHEN THE GAME IS OUT OF REACH. AND FOR WHOEVER THINK JACORY SCORED IN GARBAGE MINUTES WHEN THE DOGS WERE CALLED OFF IS OUT YOUR D**N MIND!!! PAUL JOHNSON WAS ONLY RESTING NESBITT, HE WAS STILL TRYING TO RUN UP THE SCORE ON US JUST AS URBAN WAS TRYING TO DO JACORY WAS MOVING THE BALL BOTH IN THE 1ST AND 2ND HALFS AND AT THIS POINT IN TIME IS THE BETTER QB. NIX SUCKS!!!! AND WE WON'T WIN BIG UNTIL HE IS GONE!!!

men. this loss sucks. but let's take it in with open arms. yea we lost by a lot, but these guys are young. they have matured a lot over the season. they are the future and in two years, or maybe next year, they will be back to national prominence. if anything, enjoy having the chance to play in a big bowl game. also get into basketball. they're gonna need us this season.

CANES BLOWWW!!!!!!! GO GOLDEN PANTHERS!

FIRE PATRICK NIX!!!!!

START JACORY HARRIS!!!

Why in the name of any former UM star would Shannon continue to play Marve when clearly he was having a poor day! Harris comes in and drives us right down for a FG. then Shannon says "hey, lets put Marve back in and ruin the momentum". Marve is Kyle Wright reborn! he chokes under pressure and doesnt look off the defense! FIRE NIX! his playcalling stinks!

the canes' basketball definitely needs us this weekend. if we win today, we could play uconn or wisconsin tomorrow depending on who wins. come on guys. we can't let this loss get us down. GO CANES!!!!!!!

Well Canes fans, we got our A@#ES handed to us last night. We are disappointed but I am sure the team and coaches were more disappointed in such a poor showing. On the bright side, we have improved significantly over last year. Hopefully this loss will motivate the team to handle their business the rest of this year.

Let's look to the future...

1) The Canes really need to beat NC State and their bowl game opponent to start a new winning streak.
2) Coach Shannon will use this year to show High School prospects they need to come to the U to get us back to the promised land.
2) It appears that after 11 games, Jacory has won the QB battle heading into next year.
3) Coach Shannon needs to hire a new Offensive Coordinator. It would be nice to get Rob Chudzinski back if he is let go from Cleveland.

Peace & I am out!

Easy solution: FIRE PATRICK NIX!!! Hire offensive coordinator for Texas Tech. It will also improve our recuriting process for upfront offensive line Texas players. Even when the d-fense is not having a good night, the offense has got to score points, even if we loose the game. 3 points in two games in the first half (FSA & GA Tech). How long does it take to read a defense?

As for the defense, NONE of our secondary is worth a penny. Brandon Harris is overrated and undersized. Jo Jo Nicholas is flat out horrible. Grant is never in the right place to make a plan (always too late). Ponder is the best we have. Reddick is not Sean Taylor (26). DVDyke.....GO PLAY FOR THE GAYTORS! Young is great. The defense will get better.

Just my thougts. FIRE PATRICK NIX!!!!!!!

im probably gonna get yelled at for this, but give Nix some breathing room. im a huge miami fan and yes he did a bad job last night. but let's not forget that he has made our offense one of the most efficient red zone offenses in the nation. i dont know im probably talking out of my a** but dont start blaming people.

and by the way ... the gators are JUST AS YOUNG AS THE CANES!!!! 3 starting sophomores in teh secondary, 1 starting TRUE frosh, 1 STUD true frosh safety thats going to make a push for PT next year, then we have Dee Finley coming in. linebacker, yeah spikes is leaving but dont forget about hicks, doe, brendan beal, mccray .. im not even going to start with D Line. patchan, hunter, dunlap, lemmens, tratou, green (all of them are either fresh or sophomores) ... shall i head over to the offense? O Line, pouncey TWINS, james wilson, carl johnson, hurt, gilbert .. RB, CR3 & JD2, MOODY ... WR thompson, moore, coop, hammond, hines ... TE, hernandez (hes all we need) ... QB, TEBOW will come back and if not, brantley and Newton ... all of you worried about the gators being weak in the near future, stop worrying cuz we're going to beat the canes again in 2013
