Virginia progress report

Four in a row and now a real shot at reaching the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. That's what the Canes came away with in Charlottesville after their stirring 24-17 victory on Saturday afternoon. Yeah, I know this week's progress report is coming out a day later than promised. But it's going to be a long week here at Eye On The U -- considering the Canes don't practice again until Thursday. So, for now, sit back and enjoy this week's progress report and feel free to provide with me your grades for this week as U continue to savor what is now this biggest win of the season for this young team.

Miami_virginia_football_vacSince the Canes are now bowl eligible, I've decided to change our grading scale based on where this team could end up. Welcome back to the BCS and the Orange Bowl (excellent), New Year's Day/New Year's Eve (good), You've earned a December night in Orlando, Charlotte or San Francisco (average), The Dreaded Blue Field (poor) and 6-6 and a long, shocking winter in Coral Gables (the bottom of the barrel).

Quarterbacks: What else can you say about Jacory Harris? An 18-year old kid led UM Jacory_harrisdown the field -- literally 95 yards -- threw the game-tying touchdown pass, the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime and every big throw the Canes needed. This marked the third time in four games Harris came off the bench and closed the game for the Canes. Starter Robert Marve -- the hero last week -- wasn't bad. He was 6 of 12 for 91 yards and ran for a touchdown. But he threw his 10th pick of the season in the third quarter and gave way to Harris with 4:41 left in the third quarter. This week's progress report says: Welcome back to the BCS and the Orange Bowl. Harris has now won more player of the week honors (3) than he has starts (1). Hmmm.... just saying.

Running backs: Graig Cooper has received his share of knocks for not playing a complete game this season. Saturday, he finally did. Despite a fumble, he carried the ball 24 times for 131 yards against a good physical defense. With Javarris James out for most of the second half, Cooper was huge on the final drive. He picked up 14 yards on 2nd and 12 with a draw play and picked up a ton of blitzers with blocks that allowed Harris the time to engineer the final drive. Javarris James, meanwhile, looked like the Baby J of old until he reinjured his ankle late in the first half. He was moving the pile. He finished 55 yards on nine carries. If he's healthy, this offense is even better. This week's progress report says: Welcome back to the BCS and the Orange Bowl. Coop is now the fifth leading rusher in the ACC with 70.4 yards a game behind FSU's Antone Smith, Virginia's Cedric Peerman, Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer and Maryland's Da'Rel Scott. Last year, Coop finished eighth.

Receivers/tight ends: They didn't real have a great game overall, getting flagged for Benjamin_makes_catchfalse starts and dropping a few balls. But they showed up when it counted most. Aldarius "Glue Hands" Johnson had the game-winner and LaRon Byrd the game-tying grab. But it was Sam Shields and Thearon Collier who impressed me most. Shields went airborne to haul in that important 3rd and 13 first down catch to start the 95-yard game-winning drive. Collier had the 43-yarder he hauled in from Marve to get UM's offense going in the first half and led the team with 3 catches for 64 yards. This week's progress report says: New Year's Day Bowl worthy. Travis Benajmin, Aldarius and Byrd get all the praise. But Miami really has four amazing freshmen with Collier. And its definitely nice to see Shields getting back in the mix.

Offensive line: On a day when they looked about as bad as could be drawing six of the seven false start penalties, the unit more than made up for its mistakes by providing Harris with all the time he needed to make plays late in the game. Despite playing without Jason Fox and Chris Rutledge for the majority of the game, they rallied together and helped produce 448 yards of total offense. They gave up their usual two sacks -- that's average now. But it was against the team that leads the ACC in sacks. This week's progress report says: New Year's Eve worthy. The penalties were bad. But there's no doubt this unit overachieved late being tired and shorthanded.

The Front Seven: It was another bad week trying to generate a pass rush as Allen Bailey Sean_spenceproduced the unit's only sack. But when the rough got going again, these guys buckled down again. For the third consecutive week, they shut down the opposing offense after halftime, holding Cedric Perrman 12 yards rushing in the second half. Sean Spence and Romeo Davis get gameballs. They tied for the team lead in tackles with eight and made the big plays forcing and recovering fumbles respectively. This week's progress report says: New Year's Day worthy One thing to watch this week is the health of Darryl Sharpton. He was listed as questionable and hardly played. While Romeo Davis has stepped up big to fill his shoes, UM is obviously thin at linebacker. Leading tackler Glenn Cook also got a little nicked up.

The Secondary: No, they aren't getting a lot of help in terms of pressure. But these guys still aren't doing a good job wrapping up in the open field. On one play, Peerman made Brandon Harris and Ryan Hill look foolish trying to tackle him. Virginia QB Marc Verica also had plenty of open spaces to find receivers, especially along the sideline. If he makes a few better throws, UM doesn't have a chance to come back and win this game. Carlos Armour and Anthony Reddick were the most steady of the group with five tackles each. This week's progress report says: You've earned a December night in Orlando, Charlotte or San Francisco.

Special Teams: For the first time this season, these guys honestly were a disappointment. Matt Benjamins_fumbleBosher was 1 of 2 on field goal attempts and missed a possible game winner late -- albeit from 51 yards. But the bigger disappointment was Travis Benjamin, who was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time when the ball bounced off his knee and led to a fumble. But after that, The Blur was Mr. Invisible. This week's progress report says: You've earned a December night in Orlando, Charlotte or San Francisco. The mediocre performance shows you just how much UM needs these guys to be good on a week-to-week basis.

Coaching: For the third week in a row, defensive coordinator Bill Young got through to his players at halftime and got the job done. And for the first time this season, U can't get on offensive coordinator Patrick Nix for not making the right calls. Miami's offense produced 448 yards of offense and ran all the right plays on that final drive. He and Shannon also agreed to put Harris in there late. That obviously was the right decision. This week's progress report says: New Year's Day worthy.

Good report card Manny

Hey Manny, wazup? VT is going down, I guarantee it! GT? That's another story.

Q: Have U heard anything about Thompkins and Streeter working out, practicing, going to class?

Q: What up with other Canes like Marti, Telemaque, B Washington and Holton?

Hey Manny, wazup? VT is going down, I guarantee it! GT? That's another story. Q: Have U heard anything about Thompkins and Streeter working out, practicing, going to class? Q: What up with other Canes like Marti, Telemaque, B Washington and Holton? Posted by: 86Cane | November 03, 2008 at 09:43 PM

A: What's up 86. I agree. I think Miami definitely beats VT this year. Georgia Tech won't be easy -- I said that in the preseason and nobody believed me. I've seen Thompkins with his arm in a sling. Streeter is out of the sling. Not sure if he's practicing yet. He might be. I'll ask this week. Marti is practicing with the scout team. Telemaque is injured. Brandon Washington is up at prep school, but I'm told he's coming here. CJ Holton is on the practice squad.

How is everything over at Canespace? Tell the guys I say hello. Will I see you out for basketball season? Big game against Ohio State in December. I'll be going to the Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam. I'm looking forward to a UConn-UM showdown in the second round.

Manny, good work and a largely accurate assessment of the team's play. I must disagree though with your view about what was missing with the Coker teams. It's a lot more than a QB.

Other than the last two drives against UVA and the 3rd and 4th against Duke, Jacory has struggled as much or more than Marve.

If Kayne makes that catch, suddenly Marve is Mr. Everything. And if Laron Byrd doesn't make a Herculean effort to catch that pass, Jacory's ball sails incomplete.

I think you're jumping the gun a bit with saying Harris should start. Jacory hasn't done much in games this season other than the 4th against UVA, and running the no-huddle against Duke. Marve has had about the same amount of good-great performances, including his opening drive against UVA.

Until Jacory comes in and moves the team up and down the field before the 4th, he has no real case to be the starter. He's still making some bad throws and decisions, just like Marve. And Marve is still making plays like he did against A&M, a game where Jacory didn't do anything.

They're both going to be great but Jacory doesn't have any more of IT than Marve.

Hey manny, whats the deal with the black jerseys, espn reported we have them now, so we bringing them out in a blackout next thurs????

Marve is still more talented than Jacory, he is going to be the next great QB here.

Are we capable of playing a whole game well? It's actually frustrating to watch how inconsistent we are.

Offensive line had 1.5 good drives, otherwise terrible.

where did you find these black jerseys?

How is everything over at Canespace? Tell the guys I say hello. Will I see you out for basketball season? Big game against Ohio State in December. I'll be going to the Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam. I'm looking forward to a UConn-UM showdown in the second round.

Things are cool, winning helps! I will be at the VT football game for sure with Canespace T-shirts so maybe we can hook up? I am doing some limited baseketball games this year for the first time.

I posted your link over at our site again tonight. U going to the Ring of Honor induction ceremony? Canes fans, check this out for info on the event:

canesjunkie,

The inconsistent play is driving us all crazy, but what did you expect from these guys this year? We're winning. It's finally fun.

Can't say it was better last year when we were more consistent. Consistently BAD.

See U guys at JR in 10 days.

Hey manny bro! I stay in the Virgin Islands . In St. Thomas. Ive tried many on many occasions to rep Cane Luv in the VI in ur chats but never get in. Anyway..I look 4ward..Canes 4 life!!!

UNCREDENTIALED

Manny and U,
Hey guys, I've been incognito for a while as I'm at grad school at Notre Dame and I'm slammed with work. Nov 1 was my birthday - and what a great day to be a Cane (not so much to be Irish).

Manny, I agree with you on your points about Jacory - I see him as a Dorsey, but there's something about Marve too. I think Marve can make more plays individually but Jacory uses his playmakers better - does that make sense? Kinda like Dorsey and Kelly back in 99, only Marve doesn't fumble away chances as Kenny Kelly did. I really want to continue the two-headed QB deal until one really emerges as the true leader. I like how they support each other. They empower each other. I think credit has to go to Nix and Shannon on this too.
- CVS

GOOD ANALYSIS OF THE GAME MANNY..

WHY DO YOU LUMP THE DL WITH THE LB'S?

THE LB'S PLAYED FAR BETTER THAN THE DL & BESIDES THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT POSITIONS.

ITS LIKE GRADING THE OL AND RB'S TOGETHER..

ANYWAYS GREAT POST.

GO CANES!!!

NJshoreCane:

I know....I'm asking too much of a young group. This is much better than last year. We need offensive line in this next class. Team is making progress though. Receivers are coming along nicely.

Article was posted a while back....Only one opportunity left to use these at home.

-------------------------------------------

Also making the news, it seems the Miami Hurricanes will try to resurrect the feared U legacy by introducing a black alternate jersey. Paul Lukas at Uni Watch Blog links to the new Miami Hurricanes jersey.

The black jersey may also be prepared with black pants, but the Canes signature white shell U helmets will remain unchanged. No word yet on when the "back in black" look will be unveiled by Miami, but it is expected to be a mid-season evening home game, rather than the inaugural game at Dolphins Stadium.

The Scariest thing about the QB position is that we have 2 identical QB's both capable of the same things.
To make things fair I'd like to see Marve become the backup allowing Harris the starts and Marve come in for the final minutes and march them right down the field as he easily able to do. Lets not forget Marve is the one with got the TD diving giving up his body to get in the end zone etc.

When Shannon and team all head out this spring to go after those elite Recruits he needs only to speak to OL & DL that's it cause the trenches are weak and have no depth.

We have a couple guys coming in for the OL this spring that are top notch and will give us immediate starting calibar talent and depth either way.

where did u find that we have the black unis again? on espn where?

Do you guys think Phil Fulmer would be intrigued to come to Miami? Maybe we could move Shannon back to D-coordinator? I think that would show the Canes are moving in the right direction. I have no faith in Randy Shannon as a head coach.

Us going to the ACC title game???? Now Manny is smoking the same stuff we all were at the beginning of the year.

Come on guys. This team is below mediocore in a mediocore conference. We lost to North Carolina and FSU who have proven to be very average. Now we beat Duke, UCF, and Charleston Southern and we are going to win the ACC and National Title????

You people are definitely jokes just like our head coach Randy Shannon--JOKE. And dont say I didnt tell you about it when you all are crying the rest of this year and ESPECIALLY over the next two years. Its going to be FUN to watch!

This is so awesome. Squeeking by games against mediocore competition. Its awesome. Winning games so you keep that joke of a head coach longer. Its exactly what FSU, Florida, USF, UCF, and FIU wants. Just win enough games 6,7,8 to be mediocore to eveeryone else but make you guys think there is progress. We definitely dont want you to lose all your games and change coaches fast. Just win enough. You will lose plenty more this year--NO DOUBT.
And next year when the high expectations come, it is going to be great for everyone to watch these blogs come CRASHING down with a bunch of whiney "Canes fans".

You guys are all DELUSIONAL and now Mandy is drinking the same Kool-Aid. Awesome.
Anytime you guys want to put your money where your MOUTH is, let me know.

Hate to break the news to you fake canesrule: the Gaturds did not beat the Canes, the SEC replay booth did

MANNY YOU ARE DEAD RIGHT ON THIS ONE.

what r some of u guys smoking? "Marve is still more talented than Jacory". JACORY reads the "D" better, puts the ball right where it needs to be,& dont have 10 INTs. stonger arm doesnt mean more talented. Berlin was more talented then Dorsey?

Change your panties Lil PP parker. Great game at G-Tech. Hey, next time tell your boy he might wanna put 2 hands on the ball. HAHAHAHA. Just like you guys did at Wake.... CHOKE! You chumps don't want to play us again. How you gonna fumble on the one with seconds left on the clock? Choke, choke, choke! Now your standing behind Wake again. Hahahah. Hey, if your gonna talk, make sure it's not after a game that you gift wrapped for your opponent. At least you guy's are being shown all over college football live. Just for all the WRONG reasons.. Ok, PP?
GO CANES!

First of all i understand some of the reasons for being so critical of randy shannon, but come on people we may not be lighting up the scoreboard or just plain dominating people like in the days of yore. But there is absolutely no doubt that this team is making genuine progress. If they could put together one complete game instead of just a quarter and a half or two quarters like we've been getting. This team could ball with anyone in the country. And that is not kool aid drinking or delusional that my friends is a fact. Oh yeah and to the idiot that wrote about fulmer keep that tub of lard as far away from miami as possible i don't want the infection he left at tennessee spreading down here

Don't forget about another true freshman receiver Davon Johnson--he's been impressive too!
On defense, how can you not be impressed with a unit that lost it's 2 best underclassman to the draft, then lost arguably it's 2 best returning players in Moncur and McCarthy for the season to injury. True Freshman Sean Spence=MVP.

Manny,
You ARE drinking some kind of homer kool-aid.

Verica looked like Tom Brady in the pocket, I made my lunch during one of his deep drops and ate it during the next one.Defensive line rating, Xmas-Day Couch potatoes,

Offensive line, inexcusable 7 false starts, are you kidding me, and all you have to say is , "the penalties were bad" you need to GRILL Shannon on this issue, rating, Turkey coma on X-mas Day

Quarterbacks, I agree with other posts here, spotty. Jacory was unbelievable: at the end, but is that all there is , one good drive per game? Rating, not as good as Verica and you know it.

Coaching, false starts, fair catch signals on kick-offs, using up time-outs before the end of 2nd and 4th quarters, getting gashed again in the first half, (why can't they get it right before the game or at least figure it out after the first quarter and make some adjustments), again, as other posts have said this was a mediocre Virginia team, they were very lucky to pull this out at the end. rating, wishing they weren't at home watching the Micron bowl on TV.

Manny your rating system is wacko, there isn't one scintilla of evidence anything the Canes did on Saturday was BCS or New Years Day worthy. Believe me, I BLEED green and orange, but I know the reality is that Canes are mediocre at best.

Get off the kool-aid, mediocrity that is praised is disgusting.

I can't believe the U keeps on winning?

I keep talking trash but it doesn't seem to work.

Maybe it's time for me to go to the FSU board because the U is just to good.

Bye, Mrs. Parker

**** Kiss Kiss ****

sarasota cane said this:

did i miss something? IF you are a hurricane fan, why would it be "FUN" to watch in the event that Shannon is not successful at the U? Is it because you would have the pleasure, benefit if you will, to say you were right? That you told us so? or does it mean something else-- perhaps something that you might not be so proud to say publicly?

sarasota--- hmmmm. . . ohhh, i get it now. . .

btw-- shannon and the team will be just fine-- doing fine now as a matter of fact. the cane nation would be a lot better off without so called fans like you.

Since this is a bye week can you get us a recruiting update???

What's up w/ Arthur Brown? Are we saving him for next year (redshirt)? If we're so thin at LB, why isn't he playing more?

this is so awesome. Squeeking by games against mediocore competition. Its awesome. Winning games so you keep that joke of a head coach longer. Its exactly what FSU, Florida, USF, UCF, and FIU wants. DID FSWHOOOO not just loss to Georgia tech... lol o yeah and one of the mediocre teams we beat was wake forest. U know the team that fswhooo could score a touchdown on. ah u are a funny guy preston

HEY FELLOW CANESTERS, THAT CONVICT RONNIE WILSON FROM UF IS AT IT AGAIN! FACINGN ASSUALT CHARGES...AGAIN!

I MEANT FACING ASSAULT CHARGES.

AY CANERULE AKA COKECANES AKA THE FAKE SAROSTA OR TX CANE OR 9 SHIPS.

According to a sworn complaint filed in Gainesville, Wilson punched two people early Sunday morning after the Gators win against Arkansas. Wilson received his first playing time since 2006 against Arkansas. He faces two misdemeanor charges of assault and battery.

iT SEEMS LIKE UR OVER PAID COACH CANT CONTROL HIS PLAYERS.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF URBAN LIAR LETTING THE INMATES RUN THE ASYLUM.

Posted by: TX Cane | November 04, 2008 at 07:10 AM

I know that's not the REAL TXC, but I'll respond to this idiotic post anyway.

Phil Fulmer did not even get Graig Coopers (Mr. Tennessee Football '05) name right nor did he know what Graig's fathers name was. He called him Mr. Cooper. Enough on that one.

I agree with a few posters above. Manny, I think you're being a little too easy on the QB's. At the moment, I don't see anything from either of them that warrants an "excellent" grade. Honestly, I don't see how we can win championships with either of these QB's the way they are playing NOW.

Marve has the arm and puts it right where it needs to be between defenders and into the bread basket. But he's way too prone to mistakes. Gets a bad read on the D, and starts throwing INT.

Harris on the other hand, though he does have nice touches, especially in the end zone (i.e. that pass to Johnson was just right) and he does great reading the D, I can't help but hold my breath everytime he throws one of those floaters / dying quails. His arm strength still has a lot to be desired. I can't think of one time he has lead a wide open WR on a fly route. The way Marve did so with Collier.

I love that harris was able to lead us to victory. But like another poster above me said, it was really one great drive, and then pretty mediocre everything before it.

On Nix I will have to disagree as well. Though he wasn't an absolute mess like he was last year and parts of this year, his playcalling is still not great. How many times did we run that draw play on 3rd and 10+? How many times did it work? It was always good for 7 yards, but not the first down. I think Nix is now experimenting with calling run plays on obvious pass plays, and pass plays on obvious run plays. Still, he needs to get it together and make this offense exciting to watch again. Watching texas tech the other day made me think I was watching football in fast forward.

Thanks for all the info Manny.

Hook us up with a recruiting report when you got a minute.

But we beat Wake which FSwho couldn't do. If we make the ACC Championship then we'll be playing Maryland anyway. Ha Ha!

All this hate puts a smile on the face. Non-Cane fans post here is fear. Why else post here? It makes no sense. It is hilarious. They rant the same ish over and over and over.

All U knuckleheads were saying THE U is down, at the bottom, etc. Medicore conferense? That makes U even look dumber. SEC vs. ACC is 3 and 3. I think the ACC is doing just fine.

How about our wins against Wake and UVA? How about 2 losses by 6 points? Just winning these medioker games to keep Shannon around?! Pllleeeeaaasssseee! We beat a VERY good UVA team, in their house on their homecoming. And if I remember correctly, they were even favored!!!

THE U OWNS U!

5>2 beeyotches!!!

Get over it already and move on. Be the bigger man, but you can't cause your children! Don't worry, I'll have your mommy home in time to make you dinner. She feels so good, I love it when she wraps her lips around....

OLE MISS?!

Wake Forest?! Georgia Tech?!

LMAO!!!

If U knew, which U don't, Jacory even came out and said it was his fault for the false starts. He is still going through puberty, geez! As soon as his voice is a little deeper, the OL will not be doing false starts.

Get over it!

JH is our guy!

Lets make it a TWO FOR TUESDAY.

We should get rid of Jacques Rickerson while we're at it.
