Virginia progress report

Four in a row and now a real shot at reaching the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. That's what the Canes came away with in Charlottesville after their stirring 24-17 victory on Saturday afternoon. Yeah, I know this week's progress report is coming out a day later than promised. But it's going to be a long week here at Eye On The U -- considering the Canes don't practice again until Thursday. So, for now, sit back and enjoy this week's progress report and feel free to provide with me your grades for this week as U continue to savor what is now this biggest win of the season for this young team.

Miami_virginia_football_vacSince the Canes are now bowl eligible, I've decided to change our grading scale based on where this team could end up. Welcome back to the BCS and the Orange Bowl (excellent), New Year's Day/New Year's Eve (good), You've earned a December night in Orlando, Charlotte or San Francisco (average), The Dreaded Blue Field (poor) and 6-6 and a long, shocking winter in Coral Gables (the bottom of the barrel).

Quarterbacks: What else can you say about Jacory Harris? An 18-year old kid led UM Jacory_harrisdown the field -- literally 95 yards -- threw the game-tying touchdown pass, the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime and every big throw the Canes needed. This marked the third time in four games Harris came off the bench and closed the game for the Canes. Starter Robert Marve -- the hero last week -- wasn't bad. He was 6 of 12 for 91 yards and ran for a touchdown. But he threw his 10th pick of the season in the third quarter and gave way to Harris with 4:41 left in the third quarter. This week's progress report says: Welcome back to the BCS and the Orange Bowl. Harris has now won more player of the week honors (3) than he has starts (1). Hmmm.... just saying.

Running backs: Graig Cooper has received his share of knocks for not playing a complete game this season. Saturday, he finally did. Despite a fumble, he carried the ball 24 times for 131 yards against a good physical defense. With Javarris James out for most of the second half, Cooper was huge on the final drive. He picked up 14 yards on 2nd and 12 with a draw play and picked up a ton of blitzers with blocks that allowed Harris the time to engineer the final drive. Javarris James, meanwhile, looked like the Baby J of old until he reinjured his ankle late in the first half. He was moving the pile. He finished 55 yards on nine carries. If he's healthy, this offense is even better. This week's progress report says: Welcome back to the BCS and the Orange Bowl. Coop is now the fifth leading rusher in the ACC with 70.4 yards a game behind FSU's Antone Smith, Virginia's Cedric Peerman, Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer and Maryland's Da'Rel Scott. Last year, Coop finished eighth.

Receivers/tight ends: They didn't real have a great game overall, getting flagged for Benjamin_makes_catchfalse starts and dropping a few balls. But they showed up when it counted most. Aldarius "Glue Hands" Johnson had the game-winner and LaRon Byrd the game-tying grab. But it was Sam Shields and Thearon Collier who impressed me most. Shields went airborne to haul in that important 3rd and 13 first down catch to start the 95-yard game-winning drive. Collier had the 43-yarder he hauled in from Marve to get UM's offense going in the first half and led the team with 3 catches for 64 yards. This week's progress report says: New Year's Day Bowl worthy. Travis Benajmin, Aldarius and Byrd get all the praise. But Miami really has four amazing freshmen with Collier. And its definitely nice to see Shields getting back in the mix.

Offensive line: On a day when they looked about as bad as could be drawing six of the seven false start penalties, the unit more than made up for its mistakes by providing Harris with all the time he needed to make plays late in the game. Despite playing without Jason Fox and Chris Rutledge for the majority of the game, they rallied together and helped produce 448 yards of total offense. They gave up their usual two sacks -- that's average now. But it was against the team that leads the ACC in sacks. This week's progress report says: New Year's Eve worthy. The penalties were bad. But there's no doubt this unit overachieved late being tired and shorthanded.

The Front Seven: It was another bad week trying to generate a pass rush as Allen Bailey Sean_spenceproduced the unit's only sack. But when the rough got going again, these guys buckled down again. For the third consecutive week, they shut down the opposing offense after halftime, holding Cedric Perrman 12 yards rushing in the second half. Sean Spence and Romeo Davis get gameballs. They tied for the team lead in tackles with eight and made the big plays forcing and recovering fumbles respectively. This week's progress report says: New Year's Day worthy One thing to watch this week is the health of Darryl Sharpton. He was listed as questionable and hardly played. While Romeo Davis has stepped up big to fill his shoes, UM is obviously thin at linebacker. Leading tackler Glenn Cook also got a little nicked up.

The Secondary: No, they aren't getting a lot of help in terms of pressure. But these guys still aren't doing a good job wrapping up in the open field. On one play, Peerman made Brandon Harris and Ryan Hill look foolish trying to tackle him. Virginia QB Marc Verica also had plenty of open spaces to find receivers, especially along the sideline. If he makes a few better throws, UM doesn't have a chance to come back and win this game. Carlos Armour and Anthony Reddick were the most steady of the group with five tackles each. This week's progress report says: You've earned a December night in Orlando, Charlotte or San Francisco.

Special Teams: For the first time this season, these guys honestly were a disappointment. Matt Benjamins_fumbleBosher was 1 of 2 on field goal attempts and missed a possible game winner late -- albeit from 51 yards. But the bigger disappointment was Travis Benjamin, who was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time when the ball bounced off his knee and led to a fumble. But after that, The Blur was Mr. Invisible. This week's progress report says: You've earned a December night in Orlando, Charlotte or San Francisco. The mediocre performance shows you just how much UM needs these guys to be good on a week-to-week basis.

Coaching: For the third week in a row, defensive coordinator Bill Young got through to his players at halftime and got the job done. And for the first time this season, U can't get on offensive coordinator Patrick Nix for not making the right calls. Miami's offense produced 448 yards of offense and ran all the right plays on that final drive. He and Shannon also agreed to put Harris in there late. That obviously was the right decision. This week's progress report says: New Year's Day worthy.

U can't blame Marve for that INT. That was great defense, and a bad route by the WR.

The CB obviuosly watched enough film to know what play was coming. He broke on the hook route. The WR did not fake him well enough.

What the WR and QB will learn is to break off that route, and go deep. QB will pump fake, and the WR will be wide open for a bomb.

These kids are FRESHMEN remember? lol

Numbers don't lie and these really don't tell the story of Jacory's heroics to win games. Better Comp %, YDS per attempt, and Rating. And the biggest number, look at those INT's for Marve. Harris is flat out better.

Passing Statistics
NAME CMP ATT YDS CMP% YDS/ A TD INT RAT
Robert Marve 90 165 920 54.5 5.58 7 10 103.3
Jacory Harris 67 113 698 59.3 6.18 7 3 126.3

We have a head coach and OC that are inexperienced and learning on the job. Just like the young players, they will get better each year. Obviously, RS is not the best coach in the country, but consider this:

FSU has spent a fortune setting up their staff with a big name in Fisher, a former HC, and a O line coach that makes over 700K-not to mention Mickey. How much do you think they spend on coaching compared to UM? And even though they are loaded with talent, they still are just slightly above average. Is FSU getting better as the seasons evolve? Not to me.

UM is getting better each week. The D has given up 14 points in the 2nd half of the last 4 games combined, and one of those TD's came in the last minute of a blowout-the other after a turnover gave Duke a short field. They also held FSU to 13 in the second half the game before. That is improvement. And we lost 2 studs early to the NFL and the 4 most productive returning players (Harris, Moncur, Phillips & McCarthy) to injury.

As for the O, would you rather have Jacory or Ponder? Does FSU have a group of receivers comparable to those we have coming back next year after Carr leaves? With the RB recruits we've got coming in, and the development of Coop, whose backfield looks better next year after Smith leaves? Virtually all of our productive players return-and most with 2 or 3 years of eligibility left. Who is doing the better job with their teams-FSU's money or UM's inexperience?

I've said all along Nix worries me, but would another staff have this team where it is right now? Would another coach have recruited like RS? Maybe. Maybe not.

2010 is the test for this program-there is no excuse for this team to fail to be a top 5 team in 10. I say, leave the coaches alone and see what they can do. They are not a great team now but they've made a huge improvement from last season. If they stay on this pace, UM is back in business for years to come.

If they suck next year and regress as a program, then I'm wrong and a change may be needed. But in my opinion, UM is trending in the right direction. Is FSU?

expectations should be muted but this team is getting better. Im hoping that with the off-week they can shore-up some of these mediocre spots UM gets into. The announcers said that UM, for the first time since 1994, is on track to be less penalized than their opponents. You can contribute that to coaching. I think the VT game is really going to say alot about what this coaching staff is capable of doing. With the extra time off the coaching staff SHOULD be able to do two things. 1. they SHOULD be able to "coach these guys up" and show some improvement in consistency. The last few games the trend has been hang around in the first half and come out after making adjustments to win games in the second. The coaches SHOULD take the extra time to coach up on the little things; tackling, cathcing the ball, negating penalties,etcc.. 2. They SHOULD be able to put a good gameplan together for VT from start to finish. Just think how much better they can be if they can play a FULL game instead of a half of good football. Just remember how good the team looked against Tx AM after the bye week. IF they do this we are offically on the right track. IF not there is some definite need for concern then.

Hate to break the news to you fake canesrule: the Gaturds did not beat the Canes, the SEC replay booth did

U wish U were THE U, but Ur not so get a clUe!!!:

Unfortunately I was in the stands, so it was hard to evaluate what Marve was trying to do. It just appeared to me that he was staring down that receiver and the CB jumped the route. Marve has begun to show this throughout games. Many of his INT's have been because he doesn't check off his number 1. I know he's still a freshman, and I hope he gets better at reading what the D throws at him and how to go through his receivers.

I was just taking issue with some people proclaiming Harris as number 1 using stats (which never tells you the whole story anyways), and Manny's grade of the QB's.

Casual,

I'm pretty sure I noted the same exact comments on Saturday. Harris was pretty mediocre and playing no better than Marve up until that end of the 4th quarter drive.

Marve was playing good enough up to the point of when Shannon does his usual insertion of Harris. After the 1st or 2nd drove of the 2nd quarter. Usually at the 10:00 min mark of Q2. I remember posting in the gameday blog "and its time to put in Jacory?"

Marve plays well right out of the gate. Look at the UNC, TX AM and UVa game. Weird that he can't have the same success throughout. Jacory obviously has that cool factor to him where the game slows down in tight spots, ie nail biters with 5min or less to go. A Dorsey like factor for such a young age. Who's better? Only time will tell but since they're both Freshman its a nice problem to have.

The only problem with my last sentence is since Miami is still in contention for a Conference title its really hard to treat this 1 and 1a QB tandem as an open audition for next season. Still plenty to play for RIGHT NOW!

Check out the UF board, two more GATORS were arrested.

Preston, I saw that! Can't believe that our players keep getting arrested.

Just call us the new THUG U!!!!

Miami fans are truly pathetic. Players and Students at all schools get in trouble from time to time. I'll take Felony charges over players being murdered all day. The year Pita was murdered UM also embarrassed themselves fighting with FIU (swinging helmets, stomping on people) and what about Sean Taylor. Please! Dade County is a ses-pool. Oh wait no murders in October for Dade County, must be because UM is on a 4 game winning streak and the players are focused on football.

^^^^^THIS IS THE HATRED THAT UF FANS HAVE FOR MIAMI.

Lets play reincarnation....
at this present time.
Jacory Harris- Currently a Dorsey with wheels. Accurate, great touch, and smart.

Robert Marve- A Brett Favre Cannon and gunslinging mentality with Kyle Wright decision making & accuracy and Kirby Freeman wheels.

18 + 19 years old respectively...

On potential..

Marve has more potential Than Jacory. He is faster and has the better arm.
DOES ANY1 DISAGREE?

However, Jacory will likely me a more productive COLLEGE athlete. His smarts are unprecedented for a TRUE FRESHMAN.

WHO WAS THE THAT QB FROM OKLAHOMA THAT WON THE HIESMAN BUT DIDN'T GET DRAFTED A FEW YEARS BACK?

THAT COULD BE JACORY, IF HE DOESN'T GET HIS WIEGHT UP!!!

THIS ALL BOILS DOWN TO BOTH QB'S BEING ELITE AT ONE POINT. BUT WHAT IS BEST FOR THE MIAMI HURRICANES AND FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL PLAYER IS SPLITTING TIME THIS YEAR. &

JACORY REDSHIRTING NEXT YEAR... HE CAN'T MAKE ALL THE THROWS AND THAT WILL HURT THE U WHEN IT COMES CHAMPIONSHIP TIME. GET IN THE WIEGHT ROOM AND GET CLOSE TO 200LBS.. &

MARVE NEEDS TO LIVE IN THE FILM ROOM. I DON'T THINK HE UNDERSTANDS DEFENSE'S AT THIS POINT..

AS MY PEOPLE SAY THEY STILL JITS. WHEN THEY COME INTO THEIR OWN GAME OVER FOR THE NON HURRICANES.

I believe the biggest improvement to this team from last year is that we are competing in games. How many times have we been blownout this year? NONE. Even against Florida, if it wasn't Nix acting scary I guarantee we score more than 3 points. Down by 3 scores to FSU, we come back and make it a game.

This is a different team. These guys don't have no quit in them and they are not going to let anyone blow them out. If we lose anymore games this year, it will not be by 40 points. If anyone thinks they are going to come play the U and blow them off the field, they will be in for a rude awakening. U come play the U, U better be ready.

We can't win games if we can't compete first. That is what all u cane haters are not recognizing. You think the U sucks because we squeaked by some teams? The only knock you can put on us now is that we are inconsistent because are guys a YOUNG. Learning how to make plays. They have already completed the first step towards success by competing, now they have to learn how to finish, which has already begun.

I think Glen Cook should get his own grade "shocking winter in Coral Gables (the bottom of the barrel). That guy is a joke. What is he doing playing LB for UM. I was watching him closely on Saturday and I couldn't beleive my eyes. Here is a 5th or 6th year senior getting pushed around every single play. Did he even have a tackle?

For all the pathetic Gators who can't help but read our blogs:

Apparently Urban Meyer draws the line and strangling and suffocating a girlfriend, but someone who fires an AK 47 and punches a girl in the face is still on the team. Classy bunch up there in Gainesville.

MV,
first and foremost, respect the man who has passed on. His name was Pata (God Bless). Let me explain something to you , the stupid media who have kept quiet on Miami this year because maybe they realize that schools like Penn State have bad apples their too, and as a former dade county resident I say screw you ! I have NEVER ever heard anybody say that It was FIU who threw the 1st punch. I wish ALL of you would go back to that video and realize that. When I was in the service, My Drill Sargeant always said if one person in the unit is messed with then you ALL throw down ! So you tell me if Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State, or any other goody 2 shoes team goes out into a brawl it's ok ? If Miami does it , it's thug life. Pata's murder although unfortunate, could have happened @ alot of schools. ( Southern Cal is right in gang central in LA.) so go find another school to pick on. I'm tired of people like you Miami bashing. I met my wife years ago and moved up north 2 be w/ her and that is why I'm not a dade resident right now but I live right now near the city w/ the most murders right now Providence, Ri so you can back off on Dade and take your fake argument somewhre else !!!

Posted by: ss | November 04, 2008 at 01:30 PM

SS - Actually he is leading Miami in tackles with 55 and he is leading the per game tackles with 7.5. That's actually pretty good!

ss -

Glen Cook isn't doing that bad, he's not a stud, but he's showing a lot of heart and playing to the max of his ability. The guy is not a stud...he contributes a lot though.

I'd still like to see Arthur Brown get some playing time.

Watch out.. R. Davis might steal G Cook's spot..

Another GATOR arrest. This time their head coach Urban Meyer was arrested for $itch slapping the University of Miami and their baby head coach Randy Shannon.

Guys I am really concerned about our offense being ranked 94th out of only 119 teams in total offense. I mean UAB, Duke, Buffalo, and NAVY, Yes NAVY have better offenses than us. That is really sad. Very.

We havent played anyone good this year.

Anyone worth anything that we played we lost to.

So what if we can barely beat UCF. You guys are excited over that???????????????????????

Im not.

We're playing with high school kids...other teams can stuff our run and run the ball right at us. We've played tough in every game and these kids have proved that they will battle.

We all know the Canes football team is bad but you want to know why people HATE the arrogance, and lack of intelligence of Canes fans?

Every post Sarasota' Cane and TX Cane makes on the Gator board I will post here.

Happy Landings!!!

Why do you UF guys have such a superiority complex? It's as if you guys really feel like you are better than everyone else, or special for that matter. I am absolutely boggled by this. You guys always turn to attacking Miami-Dade's crime rates, minority population, etc, when you have no other form of comeback. In the end, you are the one's who seem ignorant! (Confederates)

This is a football blog and a free society, so stop telling people to get off of 'your' blog and unnecessarily attack people.

UFAG is such a joke everytime an incident occurs it is not even talked about. Urban liar will get caught very soon and i know the NCAA is watching him closely. Hopefully soon it will come out, or he will just leave for another position elsewhere. Then Gainsville maybe wont be such a $h*t hole....USC goes into Gvilee and beats the Gaytes....Tremendous. I go to Miami Dade community college and if i get into UM next year I will be a true cane. I got an education.

GREAT PROGRAM "U" GOT GOING THERE IN TURD-VILLE URBAN!!!!!

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida cornerback Jacques Rickerson was kicked off the team following his arrest on a felony battery charge.

The 20-year-old sophomore from St. Augustine was being held in the Alachua County jail Tuesday. According to the Gainesville Sun, no bond had been set yet.

Gainesville police said Rickerson slapped his girlfriend on the face, choked her, then covered her face with a pillow when she tried to scream for help. Authorities say the altercation started when she asked him to leave her apartment and Rickerson got upset.

According to the Sun, the woman told police Rickerson blocked the door and took her cellphone when she tried to flee the room and call police.

The police report indicated the woman had visible marks on her arm, neck and chest, according to the Sun.

Rickerson played in all eight games this season as a backup, recording 10 tackles and an interception.

"Jacques Rickerson is no longer part of our team -- that is not what our program is about," coach Urban Meyer said in a statement:

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Da U is good. Any U guys that know how to fight? i want to fight. when do we play fiu again? we play eveery other dumb school why not FIU. i want to scrap.
who's legs are skinnier mine or that scrub QB?

Ok this is getting out of hand.

Gators we get it you hate Miami. The feeling is mutual.

Let's just see how the rest of the year plays out. Gators, focus on the teams at hand don't worry about this little private school in Coral Gables. We will see you in 2013 unless we are lucky enough to see you before then.

Seriously can we just cut out the comment section on all Miami Herald blogs?

I don't understand this unhealthy infatuation with UM from gator fan's.

I have yet to see any Ole Miss fan's talking
S H I T over on Gator Clause.

Honestly I don't understand the arrogance these gator fan's exude. As if 2 title in 106 years breeds arrogance. Maybe if your lucky you will have two more rings in the next 106 years.

Why should the U be talking any crap now on the Gator boards?

The U is IRRELEVANT yet they have a fanbase that thinks they are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

You may have the fewest fans in the country but they are the worst. Talking crap and dont even show up to games because there is so much to do in miami. LOL

I agree. I wish the Canes fans would represent us well. They shouldnt be over on the Gators board and gators shouldnt be here. Just stop. we should support each other teams from florida and stop with the immature actions.

Go Canes
and
Go Gators
and
Go Noles!

will the canes be coming back to idaho for a bowl game in mid december?

i hope so.

the canes, ESPNU and the blue turf. ahhhhh i love college football.

why did they take you off the air Lamar? I loved your analysis. Better than that funny head Joe Zagacki. That dude has no clue about football.

canes be good. we have a good foosball team. we grade out at 1000 percent. we have freshman that when we win they are going to win it all next year and when we lose they be bad and they be young. i want obama to win so i can get free gas and free mortgage payments. this way i can afford ESPNU and watch all the canes games. i like jacory. he has sexy legs. i would like to cuddle with him.

Posted by: AtlantaCane | November 04, 2008 at 06:33 PM

OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah have fun being taxed to death and having the government take more money from everyone and letting them decide what to do with it. Great plan! More goverment wasting money!

Manny, good stuff as usual dude. I agree with your progress report. Just got finished watching the replay of the game on CSS and want to CONGRATULATE the young CANES once again. Great, Great, Great, victory for the U. A franchise changing victory. Yeah i know it's UVA but it the way we won. They would not have won that game last year, the year before or the year before that. This team is starting to turn the corner and the cream is starting to rise to the top(Meaning Talent). Keep identifing the talented players, then get them on the field and get the ball to them. But before we can say were back, we have got to take back oUr house. No more coming to the bottom and leaving with a victory. That must stop and it must start with Va Tech on thursday nite. FANS we got to support oUr young CANES by filling the stadium. I wish i was down south i would buy 4 season tickets.

Atlcane, hey bro this is a sports blog not CNN or Fox. We care not to talk about politics dude cause it's all about the U.
