Canes snubbed on All-ACC team

CORAL GABLES -- The University of Miami didn't have a single player on the All-ACC Preseason Team. They don't have a single one on the post-season team. Monday afternoon, the Hurricnaes became the only ACC team without a first team selection.

Matt_bosherKicker Matt Bosher was the only Cane on the second team, earning honors as both the kicker and the punter. Safety Anthony Reddick earned honorable mention. It certainly is disappointing considering Miami finished 7-5 and is headed to a bowl game. You would have thought maybe Jason Fox would have been somewhere on the list. But even he didn't earn honorable mention. It's the second straight year Miami has failed to get a single player on the all-conference first team and yet another sign this team still has a long way to go. Plus, freshman Travis Benjamin finished the season as the ACC's leader in punt return average.

Jorts

That is pure BS

Can we request a Bowl game, with a team that has a slow, plodding, QB ?

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/87684-a-look-at-the-accs-out-of-conference-victories
37-11 OOC
6-4 v. sec
10 bowl-eligible teams

STEP-UP

This alos shows the discrimination against Miami on and off the field. If no one else recieved Honors it should have been Sean Spence or Travis Benjamin. These players actualy made an impact in this league and people game planned for both of them.

Pure Crap! I hope next year we can run the table in the ACC and kick their butts. Randy Shannon and Patrick Nix need to grow a pair and slaughter them all. Leave No Doubt!!

also*

I think this is a direct reflection of Shannon not letting freshmen develop a rythm. How many freshmen are on that list? I noticed a couple on 1st and 2nd team alone. If Shannon wasnt so damn stubborn, we could have had 1 qb establish a rythm and a relationship with his recievers and line and had a definite go to guy at receiver. When next year starts we are going to have the same mess of inconsistency, incohesiveness and lack of growth IMHO. I seriously question Shannon's managerial and motivational skills. Might be a long couple years of mediocrity and I am deeply concerned with the way this program is headed with the drivers we have at the wheel. God, I hope I am wrong!!

Wow, we got completely screwed!

ARRRGGGHHH!!!

Hold them up for ransom... AAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Hold them up for ransom!!!

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Objectively looking at the list and at the canes, Bosher was the only cane that deserved to be all ACC. Jason Fox is overated and is no were near dominate. Everyone else didn't play enough or consistent enough to deserve all ACC. Benjamin was nowhere near consistent enough to deserve consideration. For all those thinking someone deserved to be all ACC who? I think Franklin was the only guy who may have got snubbed.

The conference is run by rednecks, doesn't surprise me. We also haven't lived up to the hype we came into the conference in, so that's why we get punished.

We didn't get completly screwed, noone on our team is really worht. I think Sean Spence should've made second team.

He is soooooo right shannon is holding these boys back from being stars!

Maybe this shows the good coaching job that the staff has done. No ACC all conference players except for Bosher and yet we win 5 in a row and nearly end up as the ACC Coastal winners. How would you all have felt if we had 5 or 6 guys on this list and still ended up @ 7-5. Keep some perspective people. We almost won our side of the conference and only had our kicker/punter make ACC 2nd team!!

ALL U CANE HATERS CALLING FOR SHANNON AND NIX FIRINGS; THIS IS PROOF THAT THE TALENT IS NOT HERE YET. THE TALENT IS ONLY IN FIRST SECOND YEAR PLAYERS... 7-5, SOUNDS BAD YES. BUT WITH WHAT SHANNON IS WORKING WITH 7-5 IS OK... GET OF THE COACHES BACK AND LEARN SOME PATIENCE.

TO THOSE THAT SAY THAT MIAMI WAS SNUBBED... LOOK AT THE STATS, THE ONLY CANE THAT WAS WRONGFULLY LEFT OFF WAS JASON FOX.

SHANNON IS NOT HOLDING THE PLAYERS BACK... DAM SOME OF YOU ARE PLAIN STUPID, WHEN IT COME TO FOOTBALL... IT TAKES TIME TO DEVELOP TALENT.

People seem to forget Shannon speaking about the importance of seniors. Why else do you think guys get ridiculous suspensions, inconsisent playing time, and sorry seniors starting instead of talented underclassmen. Yeah, Randy Shannon is holding them back.
Anyone who has been watching Randy Shannon knew A. Johnson wasn't going to be playing against NCST after the drops against GT. The team is being held back because none of them will ever get any confidence. How could they ever get confidence when the coach throws them under the bus. The second year in a row were some players got progessively worse as the season went along.

This is talent that Randy Shannon recruited. Bruce Johnson, Romeo Davis, Glen Cook, and the rest of the patetic upperclassmen. Some of you bought into the sorry excuses for losing games coming from Randy Shannon. NCST was not a better football team than us. They just had a better coach. North Carolina just as young. FSU a very young offensive line. Youth is never a reason for failure in college football its just a excuse sorry coaches use when they can't win.

You might as well try and hire Lane Kiffin away from Tennessee.
At least this way you get a garbage coach like Randy Shannon but you get Kiffin's wife to look at. With Randy you get nothing.

Randy Shannon is a joke. Even at recruiting. He was here when Coker was here. Doesnt Randy get any blame for the lack of talent on this team? So he got a few Northwestern people Miami would have gotten even if Helen Keller were the head coach. Actually Helen Keller, if she were alive, would probably be a better college head football coach than Randy Shannon.

Shannon is a conintuation of the Coker years like John McCain would have been a continuation of the Bush years.
You need CHANGE.
Change outside of the program and someone to bring in new ideas instead of the same old stuff.

At least Larry Coker won. Has Randy Shannon already passed Larry Coker in losses?

Found it myself

Larry Coker was 60-15 (80%) during his time at Miami with a 3-0 record against Florida and 5-2 against FSU

Randy Shannon is 12-12 (50%) during his time at Miami with an 0-1 record against Florida a team Miami has not lost to since 1985 and a 1-1 record against Florida State.

3 more losses (which will come by next year) and Shannon will equal Coker's loss total (Coker a guy who was FIRED).

You got a gem there in Miami!

Get him signed now to a long term contract!

How about this Rawpimple:

HIGHLIGHTS OF RANDY SHANNON's GREAT HEAD COACHING CAREER

#1) Randy Shannon has a 12-12 record in his two years as Miami's head coach, which amounts to the worst winning percentage of any University of Miami coach of the past three decades.

#2) The 51-13 loss to the University of Oklahoma in a nationally televised game, one of the most lopsided defeats in the program's history.

#3) Miami collapsed completely in Shannon's first year, losing to unranked North Carolina and, in the Orange Bowl, to unranked Georgia Tech and North Carolina State. North Carolina, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State then beat Randy Shannon's team AGAIN the following year.

#4) In what was one of the most embarrassing performances in Miami Hurricanes hitory, the final appearance ever at the Orange Bowl, in which Miami suffered a crushing 48-0 loss against 21st University of Virginia, the worst loss for the program in the history of its play at the Orange Bowl and the worst overall loss since the 1998 Canes' loss at Syracuse (66–13).

#5) Under Shannon, the team lost 6 out of their 7 last games, finishing with a losing record and failing to qualify for a bowl game for the first time in over a decade.

#6) Prior to the start of the 2008 season, Shannon was ranked dead last in a Sporting News ranking of the 66 BCS head coaches.

#7) In his second season things have not gotten much better as they have been highlighted by disappointing losses to in-state rivals Florida and Florida State something the Canes have not done since 1985

#8) Miami's loss to Florida was its first in the rivalry since 1985 and snapped a 6-game winning streak over the Gators. Larry Coker, the previous head coach of Miami who was fired was 8-2 against both Florida and Florida State in his career while Randy Shannon is 1-2 and tied Coker in losses already.

Randy Shannon at best is a caretaker of the program i.e. Phil Fulmer & Frank Beamer. A guy who may compete and win a national championship or conference championship once every decade if lucky. We need a good coach not a Ron Zook.

I think the same about this coaching staff also. I am wondering about this coaching ,we see Alabama has got the same talent as us and there they are and here we are. This team better be in the top 10 next year and be in the ACC Championship game, or I will give up on this staff.

We better win the ACC Championship next year, fire Randy if we don't. Rebuilding my @ss, this is going to be year 3 already. No excuses applies to the coaching stuff too Randy.

Will '09 be another rebuilding year? Probably

yah think ?

Manny,

The title is wrong. If you go position by position, who got snubbed?

Shannon es una mier-da!!!

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!

Anthony Reddick Honorable Mention LOL!!!

Wow...we got "NIXED"

I think Randy Shannon got snubbed for ACC coordinator of the year honorable mention.

The Canes will be fine next year. I can't believe any of you would actually compare Coker first seasons with Randy. I am sorry but Randy did not inherit a Clinton Portis or an Ed Reed. There was no Mckinney on the O-line or a Dorsey behind center. All Coker had to do was show up on the side lines. No one could beat those squads they were almost like automatic wins. People open your eyes Coker had 3 NFL- All Pro running backs, he had NFL- All Pro Recievers and Tight Ends. How many NFL prospects(forget all-pro) do Randy have. Miami's record is what it hould be 7-5 there is no way this team should have been able to compete this year. But they did. Randy did a good job and it bothers me that many of you "Canes Fans" give him a hard time because we didnt go undefeated. Rigth now LSU has more talent than UM and they went 7-5, they barely beat Troy.

Randy did fine and I am tired of so many people saying "we have the best players, but Randy can't coach..." We don't have the best players, we might have the highest potential but thats all. Lets be honest, this group overachieved. There is no way a group of 18 year olds with no experience of college football should have competed with 21 year olds with 3or 4 years of college football. This team looked good for the future and I think the two qb system did good for the first year. I don't think anyone confidence was hurt it actually showed the patience in the coaching staff. Marve did have some bad games and the coaches still allowed him to start, and Harris had some rough games too, but he still recieved playing time. Next year I do believe it will be different but this year was year long competition and next year the best man will win the job.

All I have to say is Sean Spence.

cokecane/canesrule/kehoe/rawpimple snubbed for blogger of the year!

SCUMBAG

Go 'canes!

At least, we have players graduating on time. We don't have anybody getting arrested or having problems with the police. Shannon runs a clean program who is learning how to win. We have to be patient even if it takes another 3 or 4 yrs to get back to where we want to be. By that time, Shannon will have the right staff. Come on cut the guy a break he is learning on the job. ;)

Please send this message urgently to Coach Shannon,

I thought it was a joke, but there really is an OB curse! Due to UM destroying the OB for a newer DS, for disrespecting the legacy by losing its last few games at the OB, and for FIU winning the last game at the OB. A curse was cast on UM football! It will continue for 24 years with the cosequence being no National Championship.

The good news is that there is a way to break this curse, but it will take a very open mind to believe how...UM has to play FIU at FIU's new stadium. Very simple but many will laugh and not believe the curse nor my instructions on how to break it. Ignore my words and u will see year and year of misery!!

I agree with everything said by...jr.h2 | December 01, 2008 at 10:32 PM And Norm as well. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither are dynasties.

kIRBY hOCUTT SHOULD BE READING THESE STATS.

THOSE RANDY SHANNON NUMBERS ARE PATHETIC. AND PEOPLE KEEP USING THE "YOUTH" EXCUSE. WE ARE NOW IN YEAR TWO, AND VERY LITTLE PROGRESS IS OBVIOUS. UNLESS. UNLESS, THEY WIN THEIR BOWL CONVINCINGLY AND FINISH 8-5. IF THEY DO, THIS IS 1999, WHICH MEANS THAT 2000 IS A YEAR TO RECKON WITH AND 2001...NUF' SAID.

THAT BRINGS US TO 2010 THEY YR WE PLAY THE GTORS AGAIN. THAT YEAR WILL BE KEY. THAT YEAR WILL BE YEAR 3 WITH THIS TEAM. NO MORE EXCUSES THEN. HAT YEAR EXPECTATIONS WILL BE HIGH. NO MORE TEBOWN, NO MORE HARVIN, NO MORE RAINEY. IF RS' RECRUITING AND HYPE ARE REAL, WE WILL BE 12-0 THAT YEAR. PERIOD. 2010 IS THE YEAR OF THE SECOND COMING OF THE PERFECT STORM.

jaime we don't play the gaturds in 2010..its in 2013

RAW PIMPLE

The reason Coker won is he coached a team that still had talent left from Butch Davis. Go back and look at the players on that team and then realize who left early and then graduated. Shannon was given a team that was VERY low compared to what Coker had and left. How many players on the 2001 team were drafted in the first round? When Coker left this was a shell of a team it was prior. GO BACK AND LOOK AT THE PLAYERS THEN BE HONEST WITH YOUR COMMENT!

Anyone here is able to write their minds but go back to and watch all the games played this past year and you will see that the biggest difference between UM and its opponents was size, even when some of the guys came in early and helped the team out, the difference in size is what caught my eyes, you did see the teams with more experience able to handle Miami's youth. I say when this group of freshmen get to be juniors is when you'll see Miami starting to get back where we all want them to be. And as far as the coaching staff goes, at other places like Alabama they have a mixture of youth with talented upperclassmen, we at the U do not have that luxury, we do not have a late NFL round pick on our Jr and Sr classes. when these guys gain experience and we get a couple of solid recruiting classes to create depth, then and only then, if we go 7-5 or even 8-4 again then we should start getting on the coaching staff. Expect next year to be somewhere between 8-4 and 9-3 with a possible trip to the ACC championship, but National Championship should not be expected until after 2010.

Damn I'm glad you 'armchair coaches' are just that, armchair. You freakin people on here beetchin are a joke. When we were on that 5 game winning streak, you were all 'woo hoo, we're back, we're gonna go to the ACC title game, and a good bowl', woo hoo this is great, Randy's doing a GREAT job, he knows what he's doing, he's the man, and now you're calling for his head. You all remind me of one thing, the MEDIA. You're NOT coaches, you DON'T play organized sports, MOST of you probably NEVER played sports in your lives, and now all of the sudden YOU KNOW what's best for the team. I got 4 words for you, SHUT THE F UP.

Miami Mike, Canes 25 and jr.h2,
I agree 100%. You all have hit the nail squarely on the head. Coker inherited an incredibly talented team that was the result of Davis' multi-year rebuilding process that disintegrated over the remaining years he was HC. Do you see him back in coaching? Does that tell you something? He was apparently a decent OC, but was in 'way over his head as HC. And how long did it take Davis to bring the program back? A lot longer than 2 years! At NC, he inherited a very talented group of redshirts his predecessor wouldn't play until he felt they were ready, and it probably cost him his job. Let's get with it people! The team RS inherited was totally weak in upperclassmen and totally lacking in a winning attitude, and that has always been the key to Miami's success at reloading the program. An assistant coach or two may be weak, but the program as a whole is definitely headed in the right direction. GO CANES!

On to basketball people!!..good coach, good players......our football team (players and coaches) have a long, steep learning curve ahead of them... GO CANES!

I hope Coach Shannon and the UM players don't bother reading the 90% garbage that appears here. This is no reflection on you, Manny, because you do a great job of reporting. Coach Shannon knows that he must get dominating offensive linemen to have a good football team and he and the staff are out recruiting offensive linemen. All one has to do is look at the dominating football teams from the Alabamas to the New England Patriots to see the one thing that they all have in common. I only saw the last quarter of the last game, but if Rutledge could have at least slowed down their defensive end the quarterback might have had a chance to throw the ball.

I'm sorry guys, but I am just sick of the excuses already. Last year before the season we all said, "this team was undisciplined under Coker, now RS will right this ship." After the humiliating season, excuses were flying around, Coker left us talentless, players have a losing mentality, etc. etc. This year we have amazing recruits and barely show any signs of progress, yet now the excuses are "we're young." BS

People forget that RS was a part of this team during Coker. People forget that he recruited many of these "talentless" upperclassmen. Many of you point to the fact that since we were "snubbed" from first team ACC that it proves that we were just overachieving. It can't possibly be that these kids aren't excelling in the system in place. That there is no room for growth. That doesn't cross your minds?

During our 5-game win streak I wasn't one of those fans sitting here and drinking the koolaid. I did think we were seeing a team begin to grow, but we had a butt load of problems and I knew we were going to get exposed. After GT and NCState, the state of this football program is worse than I thought. Don't be fooled by our record, our offense still reeks. Our defense did improve, but guess what, we got ourselves a proven DC who (gasps) refuses to blame the players for his faults. Never once has VY pointed the finger at the kids. Nix and Shannon do exactly that everytime there is a failure.

Guys, let's just be honest with ourselves. We are an average team destined to be mediocre until we either get ourselves a decent OC, or we clean house starting at the top. Shannon has one more year to prove to me what he can do; Nix is done. Get that cancer out of here.

I'll bite.

I don't think this is an age issue.

This is a development issue, and star power issue.

If you do a comparison, without bias... take a short look.

Year One (2001 vs. 2007)
QB- Ken Dorsey vs. Kyle Wright
RB- Clinton Portis vs. Graig Cooper
TE- Jeremy Shockey vs. Dedrick Epps
WR- Andre Johnson vs. Lance Leggett

Year Two (2002 vs. 2008)
QB- Ken Dorsey vs. Robert Marve
RB- Willis McGahee vs. Graig Cooper
TE- Kellen Winslow vs. Dedrick Epps
WR- Andre Johnson vs. Aldarius Johnson

This is only a glimpse, but very telling.

There is no justification whatsoever in comparing Randy Shannon's first two years to Larry Coker's. Furthermore, weren't Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Jonathan Vilma, Dan Morgan, and D.J. Williams on those teams?

Calling for Shannon's head after two years with such a glaring discrepancy is utterly ridiculous.

Miami is Miami, with no excuses for losses period. 10 or 11 wins aren't enough to appease even Shannon himself.

However, there is definitive improvement with a mostly young team.

Sean Spence is amazing. Bosher is extremely competent. The Marcus'es (Forston, Robinson) are also fun to watch. I don't know what to think about the offense, despite Cooper's flashes of greatness...

...which leads me to this:

If you want to yell at Nix, go ahead. I have yet to see a go-to receiver emerge, or a run game dominate as was expected.

The playcalling was questionable at numerous points during the season.

As for Shannon, leave him alone.

LB

P.S.: Though if the improvement doesn't continue... this conversation is no longer moot.

F is a letter...

In Nix's defense we had quite a few "quick-strike" drives this year, and all I want is more consistency.

TX, tptp79, and Jamie have it right on. Randy's had a number our seniors as either the DC or HC for 4-5 years. Have you really seen guys getting better? Ponder, Adkins, Sharpton, B Johnson, any of the O-linemen outside of Fox? Have you seen progress? Granted, we played a lot guys who might not have played until a R-Fr or Soph at a program with some depth, but still, did you really see progress with our guys this season? I watched the last game and it felt just like our blue turf game against Nevada 2 years ago. There's really been little progress and the numbers show it. You know it's true. I'll give Dandy one more year. After next year it's 3 years in and in this era guys who are going to get it done, start geting it done within that time (meaning show significant progress and make a team into competitive team every week). Coaches show their mark by then. Just look around and look at the top coaches: Saban, Miles, Stoops, Meyer, Carroll, even that v-necked virgin Tressel. The Weis', Callahans, M Stoops, etc., promise but don't produce. They keep everyone waiting for "next year" but of course it doesn't come. AL floors me. 6-6 to 12-0? Give me a break. And in case you didn't notice they play a number of freshmen at skill positions.

Kool-aid is not cool and neither is the Same Old Sorry Ass 'Canes (SOSAC).

Let's go hoops!

Amen to Casual Observer.
