Emerald Bowl: Cal 24, UM 17 (F)

Much like U, I'm getting ready to sit down and watch the final game of the Canes' 2008 season from the living room in my house. I'll be checking in with Susan Miller Degnan throughout the night for updates out in San Francisco. Meanwhile, I'll be here providing you with my thoughts on the game.

This game has plenty of storylines. But none bigger than freshman quarterback Jacory Harris, who for all Emerald_bowlintensive purposes will be the quarterback of this team going forward. We've heard the rumblings for weeks that Robert Marve (suspended for this one) would likely be heading elsewhere after this season. We heard from his high school coach who told me Marve's relationship with coach Shannon wasn't "buddy-buddy." So, tonight's game in a lot of ways, is a glimpse into the future of this program.

Harris is a kid I really believe will be able to help get this program back to the BCS level. He's a tremendous leader who has impressed me with his poise and knowledge since the day I met him in the 11th grade over at Miami Northwestern. Miami probably won't win tonight's game. This Bears team is playing at home and has far less holes on defense than UM does. But I've got a real good feeling Jacory is going to play well tonight and give U hope for the future.

So, feel free to join our in-game discussion below and give me your thoughts heading into this bowl game, during this bowl game and after it.

> By the way, nice win for the Canes today out in New York against St. John's. Miami definitely rebounded from that ugly Clemson loss. Coach Frank Haith wasn't around this week with the holidays to talk to reporters. But we know he worked his team hard after that loss. It paid off. Miami's three losses by the way are all to ranked teams. And the team's strength of schedule is No. 2 in the country right now.

EPPS OUT
Dedrick_epps> We learned shortly before the game Dedrick Epps will not play tonight after suffering a right leg contusion during practice this week. UM is already shorthanded at tight end. Richard Gordon and Tervaris Johnson were suspended earlier this week for violating team rules. That leaves UM with Chris Zellner as the only real available tight end. Tackle Tyrone Byrd will wear No. 84 tonight and play the tight end spot, mostly as a blocker.

FIRST HALF THOUGHTS...
> How about that? 18th-year senior Romeo Davis comes up with the first big play of the game, stripping Jahvid Best of the ball, allowing Jojo Nicholas to recover at the UM 49.
Jahvid_best> Cal makes the second big play and this one means something. A 74-yard catch and run from Nate Longshore to Verran Tucker leads to a 2-yard Jahvid Best touchdown run that gives Cal a 7-0 lead with 7:15 left in the first quarter.
> So far, we haven't been able to see if Jacory Harris can throw the football. Miami continues to go backward on first down before deciding to run it on second and long.
> Best has his second touchdown. A 43-yard run makes it 14-0 with 4:55 left in the first quarter. This could end up getting real ugly quick unless UM's offense shows up. This UM team is not only short-handed, but they can't generate anything positive either right now in the first quarter.
> Got to love Tyrone Byrd battling for that ball from the tight end position. And then Javarris James for catching it off the deflection.
> After getting off to a slow start, Jacory Harris engineers a nice 10-play, 80-yard drive, capped with a 15-Jacory_harrisyard touchdown pass to LaRon Byrd. Harris converted a 3rd and 9 with a nice 11 yard run and found Leonard Hankerson for a big pickup.
> Canes defense stands tall right after UM's first touchdown by forcing a three-and-out for Cal. Glenn Cook makes a nice play on a blitz on third down, forcing the Bears to throw an incomplete pass. Except for two really bad plays (Best's 43-yard TD run and the 74-yard pass) and another pair of 9-yard Jahvid Best runs, UM's defense has done a good job tackling today and getting pressure on the quarterback.
> Jacory makes his first bad decision in the game, throwing into zone coverage and getting picked off by Michael Mohammed at the UM 42. The Miami defense is going to have to hold here.
> Jahvid Best has 106 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. But for some reason, Cal has continued to throw the football. Not sure why.

SECOND HALF THOUGHTS...
> Miami gets good field position to start the second half, but does nothing with it after Chris Rutledge gets flagged for a late hit. The penalty turned a 3rd and 1 to a 3rd and 16.
> Miami averted trouble on its first bad snap moments later when Matt Bosher fielded a bouncer and got his kick off.
> Cal has tried to completely avoid kicking the ball to Travis Benjamin. On three kickoffs now, they've gone short on kickoffs. Benjamin has only had the chance to return one punt and didn't get very far.
> Miami ties the ball game with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Thearon Collier with 7:34 left in the third quarter Lee_chambers. Redshirt freshman Lee Chambers makes an appearance on the drive, picking up a key first down on a 18-yard third down run to the Cal 9 yard line. It caps a 10-play, 69-yard drive in which Jacory looked very, very good. Harris is now 17 of 27 for 145 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.
> One thing Randy Shannon is going to have address after this season is how he used his timeouts. At the end of the first half, Miami used up the final minute and didn't use any of its three timeouts until there were four seconds left. Now, in the second half, Shannon has used two timeouts on defense.
> Cal puts together a 12-play, 76-yard drive to answer Miami's scoring drive. Jahvid Best once again is at the center of all the successful plays, starting the drive with a long run and then picking up 25 yards on fourth and 1. Cal had to settle for a field goal, though, after quarterback Nate Longshore gets stepped on by a lineman backing up out of the pocket and falls to the ground on third and goal.
> Matt Bosher makes his best play of the game yet at the start of the fourth quarter -- getting hit on a punt to give UM a first down.
> The five yard penalty leads to a game-tying 22-yard field goal from Matt Bosher. Lee Chambers comes up big again on the drive with a few long drives. Something not to be forgotten on the drive -- Graig Cooper recovering his own fumble deep in UM territory.
> People are probably going to forget about the play Glenn Cook made late in the fourth quarter to stop Cal running back Shane Vareen on third and one at the UM 17. But it was huge. Giorgio Tavecchio missed a 34-yard field goal with 4:24 left. But Cook's tackle was the play of the drive. OK, the second most important. Jahvid Best going out with an injured hand during the drive following a 20-yard run was big, too.
> Miami caught a break with the missed field goal, but couldn't cash in. Jacory Harris gets sacked by linebacker Zach Follett and loses the football. Two plays later, Nate Longshore finds tight end Anthony Miller for a two-yard touchdown pass with 2:41 left. Does Jacory Harris have another comeback in him?
> Miami got the ball back with 2 minutes, 37 seconds left and ran eight offensive plays. But what everyone is going to be talking about this offseason is the clock management on that final drive. In a word: Disgusting.

NJ-

I played offensive line and I wouldn't want to play at Miami.

The head coaches appears like a dictator who will sell you out to the media at every single opportunity. Does he have a relationship with any players.

Nix doesn't know what type of offense he wants to run. I would be frustrated by the 3 and outs.

The OL is fat and lazy, they don't finish blocks. Something is wrong there and I wouldn't want to be part of it.

Shannon doesn't need to be fired. He does well in a lot of things. But he does have a weakness, and that is clock management. He's gotta get better at it. That was the worst time management display I've ever seen. But I like a lot of what RS stands for.

As for Nix, has anyone noticed that the last two games he has been running a prostyle offense? We have not been in the spread. His play calling is still quationable but he is no longer in spread. I've calling for his head all season but if he's going to change to prostyle offense, I only want him gone if we can get a legit OC in here. The last two games were better run offenses even if we did lose.

Just sayin, take away the last 2 min and we would be happy about the direction of the program. Manny said it right, the end was disgusting. Ruined a great game. RS owes the fans an explanaition.

Wow, great CLOCK MANAGEMENT, coaches! You know, I've been a Shannon supporter for two years now, but if things don't start shaping up next year, this program is in DIRE STRAIGHTS.

If Oklahoma hangs 50 points on us again in '09, it's all over. They'll have to fire Shannon and set the rebuilding process back another 2-3 years.

It's not looking good to me right now... the young players are loaded with potential, but if we're forced to fire our head coach, they'll never become as talented as they can be.

Please pull this thing out, Randy Shannon - another garbage season in 2009 just isn't acceptable. I really hope you can do it. The recruiting classes have been great, the freshmen look like studs, but at MIAMI we can't wait too long. We've given you time to work, Shannon, now PLEASE show us a product!

What are we selling to recruits now....the chance to get whipped on national tv.

I am so dissapointed in this entire coaching staff. I just pray that we get a OC that know what the F$%# he is doing.

Canesjunkie-

You answered several of your own questions with your response to NJ. Nix doesn't know what kind of offense he wants to run - Bingo. In the game, and winning the game are not the same. I think what it boils down to in one simple question is: Is Randy Shannon and his coaching staff getting the most out of each position on the field in all scenarios, offense, defense, Spec. Teams, 2 - min drills, etc. I can't believe that. They had one month of preparation for one game and it did not show. The players on defense still are hesitating, not anticipating, they are tip-toeing, not flying. In the GT game everyone got sucked up and did not get off blocks, they locked on and got blown off the field. Khalil Jones dropped the pass against UNC, check it.

"who for all intensive purposes"..... I believe he was referring to the intensive care our program will need after Randy single-handidly set it back 10 years.

The 1 - 2 combo of joining a fairly mediocre and mildly competitive conference while promoting within has demolished our progam.

Maybe SI had it right all along, we should have gotten rid of our football program while we had a reason. I'm gonna root for the Gators from now on, at least they have a few legit coaches.

This was as bad as it gets. It is Randy's job to manage the clock. He was clueless out there. It don't matter if you can't recruit if you can't manage the game. I love Randy wanted more from him but he is not the guy.

The canes never had a problem hiring head coaches until they started promoting asst coaches. The clock mngt was disgusting there are NO excuses for not using the TO's

This has got to be the worst coaching staff in college football. They do not know how to coach, or do they know how to evaluate talent and when to play them. Randy is good at two things 1 is recruiting and the other is disapline. Other than those two things he sucks at it. Nix sucked at Ga Tech and he still sucks. What happened to QB U where 300 yard passing games with 3 to 5 touchdowns were the norm? The only reason Randy hired him was he was too stupid to stop his offense when he was the Defensive Coordinator and Nix was at Ga Tech. That just how pathetic Randy is. He shows no emotion and doesn't know how to use his timeouts worth a crap. The receivers coach and old man Young are the only one's that deserves a right to stay but he needs to learn how to stop the run. The rest need to go. I supported Randy before like many others did because he , I thought knew what it was to be a Cane but looking at the last two seasons and this game I have to agree with the previous poster that he looks stoned on weed or something. And I don't know is Miami keeping Shannon because of his race and they want to say they have a minority as their HC. One things for sure they are not employing him for his coaching ability. Yes he can recruit but heres a clue, WINNING RECRUITS PLAYERS in the long run not a guys race or tough background from which they are from. We need a winner not a stoned looking dummy on the sideline. Heres some guys we should be trying to get as our Head Coach
Rob Chudzinski-Cane and NFL experience coaching

Brian Kelly - Instant winner, knows offense and QBs, won conference with 4th string QB and coaches with an attitude.

Gary Patterson- Won consistently at TCU for years who is just waiting and should have gotten the job over Shannon

Chris Peterson- Young energetic Coach who has taken Boise State higher than it was before. Runs a offense that utilizes its talents to the Max.

Oklahoma's offensive Coordinator- Need I say more

Howard Schnellenberger- Heck he's old but Florida Atlantic looks better than Miami right now.

Turner Gill- Look what he did at Buffalo.

Bottom line we need a winner and a Quality HC

The most troubling thing about this team is how it never seems to seize the moment. We have the ball tonight with four minutes left in a tie game. Result? Sack-fumble at our own 10-yard-line. Good teams put a drive together. Against NC State in the second half, the offense battles to give us our first lead of the game. Result? NC State drives 70 yards for a TD in about three plays. Good teams make a stop there. Those two sequences pretty much sum up the sad state of affairs these days.

i hope randy brings us a NC but he has to set up a meeting and just take a look at what he needs from his coaching staff plus how he has to put his footdown and say some of these play calls are unacceptable jacory played solid our defense didn't thanks to the OC OF CAL and Longshore the score was closer young needs to get these kids aggresive CAL o-line bullied our d-line that needs to improve were was our o-line and wow nix how do you call a run play on 1st down in the 4thqtr with 2:30 left on a running clock plus with one time out how is that even in the play calling but he has done it all yr look at VA when we recovered the ball and jacory threw like a 20 yard pass instead of throwing it again he runs the ball even tho we won the game he has called crazy $*** all yr Randy if u want to stay with the U i mean nix must be told to get an upgrade for that play book or go to pop warner alot of ppl are calling for nix head and that 2 min drill was weird but randy has to put the lawdown to these coaches not only players and get a new OC or tell nix to steal oklahoma OC playbook

DURING THE 2 MIN MARK, JACORY KEPT LOOKING OVER HIS COACHES ON THE SIDELINE FOR A PLAY CALL, BUT BOTH COACHES DIDN'T HAVE ANY CLUE WHAT TO CALL, TO MAKE IT WORST CLOCK MANAGEMENT WAS HORRENDOUS! HOW HARD IS IT TO FRIGGIN CALL A TIMEOUT OR MAKE A CALL ON A SPIKE TO SAVE VALUABLE TIME TO WIN THE GAME, I WISH THEY WOULD'VE JUST LET JACORY CALL HIS OWN PLAY, HE WAS DOING THAT IN HS, WASN'T HE?? AND ALL HE DID WAS JUST STRAIGHT UP WIN!!!!

This has got to be the worst coaching staff in college football. - Posted by: C.J.

Amen. It doesn't matter how many 5-star recruits we get, they will never develop under this coaching staff. We'll always be taking the field as the inexperienced team because we don't develop players.

Patrick Nix will never develop an offensive identity or consistent ability to score. Any quick defensive team will stuff us in our backfield, doesn't matter how good our personnnel is. At times it's as if the other team knows what the play is going to be.

Bill Young does a good job, he's really hampered by our inability to tackle. Our secondary stinks, not sure what he can do about that, otherwise, I like Bill Young so far. He's the only proven coach on the staff.

Joe Pannunzio hasn't done anything with our special teams, get him out of here. How many returns have almost been broken on us.

Michael Barrow is doing a good job with the LB's. Spence has really developed, but Arthur Brown will be the test of his coaching ability. If he can't develop Brown, we've got a problem. Good energy from Barrow, IMO he's gonna be a good one.

Wesley McGriff should be fired before any coach. The secondary is the worst I've ever seen at Miami. These guys are terrible in every aspect of the position. DVD hasn't developed at all, he can't tackle or cover. These guys look clueless out there, it's as if they haven't received any direction.

Jeff Stoutland has to go, this offensive line is horrible. They are easily the worst unit on this team. Defenses are going to setup camp in our backfield next year. We need a strong recruiter here because this is our biggest problem. Any good recruit out there should be able to make our starting lineup.

Clint Hurtt has done a decent job with the d-line. We are loaded with talent on d-line, these kids should start to dominate next year.

Aubrey Hill seems to be doing a good job. The receivers have really improved as the season has progressed.

Randy Shannon doesn't have the personality to be a head coach. His communication skills are embarrasing and I really think it's the reason the entire team looks confused at times. Does he reenforce any of the coaching that is done during the week? It doesn't seem like everyone on this team is on the same page. He can't organize a game plan and ensure it gets executed.

Randy seems like such a stubborn person that I can see how he could alienate players and coaches. I really wanted him to succeed here, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Randy Shannon is not head coach material. He should get one more year to prove himself, after that we need an experienced coach.

O yeah lets go fire everyone.. all of U people are big cry babys. yes 7-6 is not um material but what did u really expect after going 5-7 with no upperclassmen. This summer im sure RS well work on his sideline coaching. Do U know what i saw? I saw alot of redshirt freshman who are suppose to be on the sidelines. Bryd, spence, fortson, both harris's, johnson, collier, the blur, devon johnson were not all suppose to be playing major mintues this year but they were forced into action. I cant wait to these guys are juniors and we contuine to get new freshman. Go Canes

I cant wait to spring practice ..

A peewee league team would get more plays out of a two minute drill than Miami. I was calm throughout the game, even after the last fumble. Youth, I said, they are going to get better with experience. But Randy Shannon's use of the clock and his timeouts were horrible and it just isn't this game. I am still seething about the first half of the FSU game when we kicked a field goal with 6 seconds left and two time outs remaining. I can apologize for Randy no more. He is overmatched when it comes to managing a football game. You have to coach EVERY little detail and when it comes to the two minute drill, we are totally unprepared.

You guys are crying on deaf ears. The U is a private university and a large part of athletic funding comes from the alum and the Booster Clubs. So until they get fed up with the direction of this program you'll have to deal with it.

If you want CHANGE get to the dollar trail. Until then, Shalala will continue putting football on the back burner. In her grand scheme of things she thinks the U should be more like Yale or Harvard in that case the program will more likely join the Ivy League and why not, we're playing like them at this point.

Either Nix goes or my HC membership ends. The play calling is pathetic and Cal knew what plays were coming before we lined up.

From 5-7 to 7-6 with a #1 recruiting class and a 3 game losing streak, with a loss to a very mediocore PAC-10 team, including 3 ending games where the mediocore team just ran all over our defense and that is considered---MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION????

Werent the Canes suppose to be competing for a National Title in 2009? Now it looks like we wont compete until we can get a serious head coach in here and not an experiment we HOPE works out.

Fire SHANNON NOW!!!! Right now!!! Dont waste time. If you need anymore proof than last night, you know jack about college football. Lets get the program moving in the right direction by firing him and hiring a real head coach. We are wasting time. Wasting valuable time in turning around our team. Shannon is not the answer. Lets find someone who is instead of hoping and praying somehow we hit the lottery and lose less than 5 games.

I would like to see all the people on here who said we would win a National Title in 2009 or 2010?

Start putting your name up here and come out and admit what a horrible prediction you made.

HEY RANDY....it's okay to smile and show some emotion once in awhile. No wonder these kids play with no heart and no emotion. They look at the sideline at a head coach who is standing there with this look on his face like the chief of wherethefuckarewe tribe. I bet if you saw Dr. Phil he would tell you "I want you to get excited about your life" for Christ sake!!! This is college football, show some spunk, show some enthusiasm, go see the Wizard and ask for heart that pumps more than peanut butter...

I sure hope someone on this team takes leadership responsibility and lays out ( in ) voluntary workouts and qb's timing routes with the RB's and WR's, and Swazee adding quickness to esp O Linemen and RB's and at least 20 lbs of muscle to JH. Stroke Cannon,Perriliou, and any others. God bless you all! Have a safe new year.

TXCane just wrote up a great post...

He is 100% right, we are losing valuable time. And riding a 3-game losing streak to nothing-special teams, after a #1 recruiting class, and with only a two-game improvement over last year is really pretty lousy.

Maybe at some schools that's OK, but this is the f'in U of M! Remember when a 10-2 season used to get a coach on the semi-hot seat? And when ONE 9-3 season almost got Coker fired?

I don't know about y'all, but I haven't lowered my expectations ONE BIT.

And ya know, it's not just all of this, compelling as it is.

It's that we see a team on the field week-after-week that seems completely unprepared, disoriented, unable to make certain adjustments, no clock management, and uninspired play selection.

I have yet to hear one cogent explanation why Nix lined-up in shotgun on 4th and 1 this year a few times...

Men, 7-6 is one thing, but the WAY WE LOOKED getting it is what's so hurtful.

Fellas, I'm still pissed about the FSU game. Yeah, I am! We didn't have to lose the FSU game. We didn't have to come out flat and accomplish nothing until they were up 24-0.

WHY DO WE ALWAYS COME OUT FLAT AS A PANCAKE WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT?

WHY DIDN'T WE DO DICK UNTIL WE WERE DOWN 14-0 LAST WEEK?

AND WHY DO WE NEVER, AND I MEAN NEVER, SCORE MORE THAN 7-10 POINTS IN THE FIRST HALF UNLESS WE'RE PLAYING A 1-AA TEAM?

Realistically, I think we all need to know that Shannon is going to get one more full season and recruiting class before the boosters begin to put real pressure on him. Even another 7-5 regular season will probably not be enough to get him fired.

No, this will only be enough to put him on the annual "coaches on the hotseat" lists, but no more.

The earliest we can get rid of him will be 2010.

And until then, as TXCane said, we're wasting valuable time....

Holy Moly! That was such a funny line by canesfansc I almost shat on myself!

He just described Shannon as "standing there with this look on his face like the chief of wherethefuckarewe tribe."

This is EXACTLY what the fat, old, bald, drunk slob in the NJ Bar was trying to get at, although he described Shannon as looking high or stoned!

Has anyone heard yet how in the world Lee Chambers finally got some real playing time?

And an explanation why he had been given such little playing time before this that he was thought to be on his way to transfering?

As long as we have coaches who are amatuers (Bill Y. is the exception), we will be mediocre. The University of Miami deserves better than what we saw last night (and I am not knocking the players);

i had club level seats this year

went to 3 home games and 2 away (UF and GT)

wat a collosal waste of time and money !

i will not be renewing my season tix

product is a joke

thanx for destroyin the OB and leaving the big East shalala !

u stupid fat orange !

If a CEO ran a company like the Shannon/Nix braintrust managed the last two minutes of each half they'd be fired for incompetence. How in the name of Howard Schnelly is a team not prepared to run the 2 minute offense?

Some of you on here have said the talent level is not there yet and that may be true. But no matter how talented a team is, it won't matter if the coach doesn't put the team in a position to succeed. That is the problem here people, Shannon and Nix cannot or are incapable of putting these players in a position to win. I like Shannon but he seems to lack the basic, fundamental coaching smarts to even manage the game or the game clock.

And for all you Coker bashers on here, enough with that crap. He's long gone and you need to move on. This is all on Shannon now.

Btw, at least Coker won a ship and got robbed of another. And don't give me that garbage that your grandma could have won with those teams. There are plenty of uber talented teams i.e. Florida, USC this year who lost to inferior teams. It takes a good coach to go undefeated even with great teams. I guarantee Shannon would not have gone undeafeated in 2001 or undeafeated in the regular season in 2002 if he was in charge.

Griggsy,

AGREED. See my post above, no way Shannon goes undefeated in 2001 and 2002 (aside from the Butteyes robbing us). At least Coker had a rudimentary understanding of clock managment and X's and O's and got the team to play to it's talent level. Shannon has none of those qualities.

I can't beleive that Coach Shannon, and Coach barrow are ex-Linebackers. With all the glory they get for recruiting, either of them have the common sense to recruit a Middle linebacker. The best thing that hapenned last night was COOK's last game. He wont get a 8th year of eligiblity.

SADCANEFAN

one thing i did see from shannon when miami was wasting valuable time was when jacory threw the ball away with 12 sec on the clock he went straight to nix to try and figure out what he was doing and nix just walked away forcing shannon to use our last time out since he saw that nix couldn't give him an explanation i will say this i do support shannon i don'nt know how ppl can say we should have won 10 games when coker left us as a fiu type team but what shannon must look at as himself is the clock management like i said it has been done a few times this year were we burn our timeouts early in games when it seems like their close i do know shannon will get 1 or 2 more years but from what i see we will get rid of nix hopefully and if shannon wants to keep his name out of bloggers mouth he has to get rid of nix and must step up to be like if these coaches can't do the job then i will i don't know anyother proof on why we shouldn't get rid of nix the offense is basic it is not even funny we call the same plays over and over again no mix up to anything it was either jacory rolled rite or left ran aton of r/b dump offs with no o-line to block a stretch play or we would have the running back run up the gut why did we never use cooper speed more as a like line him up as areceiver just to find match up problems since sometimes he was hit in the backfield or actually use him with screens with actually line men blocking a little more throughout the year just an observation that was the type of adjustments i would have like to see throughout the year if nix could max out the talent he had from every player not him but not only was it a warning sigh when we hired but when he said he didn't want the kids to loose confidence so he choose to be conservative rite there he was going to use these kids as an excuse to save his job im sry but there wre a handful of games that we were still in that nix called conservative to it seems like a true OC would open the playbook up after he seen we are in the game but nix has done that he has no flare to his let him go shannon and get a real proven OC that has worked great with no talent or jus has done his job

can't agree with you on that canzfan do you know how many of those player coker had that made a direct impact in the nfl their rookie years im sry if you go too two NC and the orange bowl to a computers bowl thats not great coaching if that is great coaching then what do you call pete carrol a proven coach you have to keep having stock in those player we only had one person last year in the draft and that was kenny phillips but you are rite though it is old but the only reason why people still have that link is becuase we went from great to sub par and that leaves every cane fan with a horrid taste in their mouth do that with any power house team and the fan base will still be in aww that we go from NC to crappy bowls

i meant one player taken out the first round of the nfl draft and that was like the 20th pick or something( kenny phillips )
