Emerald Bowl: Cal 24, UM 17 (F)

Much like U, I'm getting ready to sit down and watch the final game of the Canes' 2008 season from the living room in my house. I'll be checking in with Susan Miller Degnan throughout the night for updates out in San Francisco. Meanwhile, I'll be here providing you with my thoughts on the game.

This game has plenty of storylines. But none bigger than freshman quarterback Jacory Harris, who for all Emerald_bowlintensive purposes will be the quarterback of this team going forward. We've heard the rumblings for weeks that Robert Marve (suspended for this one) would likely be heading elsewhere after this season. We heard from his high school coach who told me Marve's relationship with coach Shannon wasn't "buddy-buddy." So, tonight's game in a lot of ways, is a glimpse into the future of this program.

Harris is a kid I really believe will be able to help get this program back to the BCS level. He's a tremendous leader who has impressed me with his poise and knowledge since the day I met him in the 11th grade over at Miami Northwestern. Miami probably won't win tonight's game. This Bears team is playing at home and has far less holes on defense than UM does. But I've got a real good feeling Jacory is going to play well tonight and give U hope for the future.

So, feel free to join our in-game discussion below and give me your thoughts heading into this bowl game, during this bowl game and after it.

> By the way, nice win for the Canes today out in New York against St. John's. Miami definitely rebounded from that ugly Clemson loss. Coach Frank Haith wasn't around this week with the holidays to talk to reporters. But we know he worked his team hard after that loss. It paid off. Miami's three losses by the way are all to ranked teams. And the team's strength of schedule is No. 2 in the country right now.

EPPS OUT
Dedrick_epps> We learned shortly before the game Dedrick Epps will not play tonight after suffering a right leg contusion during practice this week. UM is already shorthanded at tight end. Richard Gordon and Tervaris Johnson were suspended earlier this week for violating team rules. That leaves UM with Chris Zellner as the only real available tight end. Tackle Tyrone Byrd will wear No. 84 tonight and play the tight end spot, mostly as a blocker.

FIRST HALF THOUGHTS...
> How about that? 18th-year senior Romeo Davis comes up with the first big play of the game, stripping Jahvid Best of the ball, allowing Jojo Nicholas to recover at the UM 49.
Jahvid_best> Cal makes the second big play and this one means something. A 74-yard catch and run from Nate Longshore to Verran Tucker leads to a 2-yard Jahvid Best touchdown run that gives Cal a 7-0 lead with 7:15 left in the first quarter.
> So far, we haven't been able to see if Jacory Harris can throw the football. Miami continues to go backward on first down before deciding to run it on second and long.
> Best has his second touchdown. A 43-yard run makes it 14-0 with 4:55 left in the first quarter. This could end up getting real ugly quick unless UM's offense shows up. This UM team is not only short-handed, but they can't generate anything positive either right now in the first quarter.
> Got to love Tyrone Byrd battling for that ball from the tight end position. And then Javarris James for catching it off the deflection.
> After getting off to a slow start, Jacory Harris engineers a nice 10-play, 80-yard drive, capped with a 15-Jacory_harrisyard touchdown pass to LaRon Byrd. Harris converted a 3rd and 9 with a nice 11 yard run and found Leonard Hankerson for a big pickup.
> Canes defense stands tall right after UM's first touchdown by forcing a three-and-out for Cal. Glenn Cook makes a nice play on a blitz on third down, forcing the Bears to throw an incomplete pass. Except for two really bad plays (Best's 43-yard TD run and the 74-yard pass) and another pair of 9-yard Jahvid Best runs, UM's defense has done a good job tackling today and getting pressure on the quarterback.
> Jacory makes his first bad decision in the game, throwing into zone coverage and getting picked off by Michael Mohammed at the UM 42. The Miami defense is going to have to hold here.
> Jahvid Best has 106 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. But for some reason, Cal has continued to throw the football. Not sure why.

SECOND HALF THOUGHTS...
> Miami gets good field position to start the second half, but does nothing with it after Chris Rutledge gets flagged for a late hit. The penalty turned a 3rd and 1 to a 3rd and 16.
> Miami averted trouble on its first bad snap moments later when Matt Bosher fielded a bouncer and got his kick off.
> Cal has tried to completely avoid kicking the ball to Travis Benjamin. On three kickoffs now, they've gone short on kickoffs. Benjamin has only had the chance to return one punt and didn't get very far.
> Miami ties the ball game with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Thearon Collier with 7:34 left in the third quarter Lee_chambers. Redshirt freshman Lee Chambers makes an appearance on the drive, picking up a key first down on a 18-yard third down run to the Cal 9 yard line. It caps a 10-play, 69-yard drive in which Jacory looked very, very good. Harris is now 17 of 27 for 145 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.
> One thing Randy Shannon is going to have address after this season is how he used his timeouts. At the end of the first half, Miami used up the final minute and didn't use any of its three timeouts until there were four seconds left. Now, in the second half, Shannon has used two timeouts on defense.
> Cal puts together a 12-play, 76-yard drive to answer Miami's scoring drive. Jahvid Best once again is at the center of all the successful plays, starting the drive with a long run and then picking up 25 yards on fourth and 1. Cal had to settle for a field goal, though, after quarterback Nate Longshore gets stepped on by a lineman backing up out of the pocket and falls to the ground on third and goal.
> Matt Bosher makes his best play of the game yet at the start of the fourth quarter -- getting hit on a punt to give UM a first down.
> The five yard penalty leads to a game-tying 22-yard field goal from Matt Bosher. Lee Chambers comes up big again on the drive with a few long drives. Something not to be forgotten on the drive -- Graig Cooper recovering his own fumble deep in UM territory.
> People are probably going to forget about the play Glenn Cook made late in the fourth quarter to stop Cal running back Shane Vareen on third and one at the UM 17. But it was huge. Giorgio Tavecchio missed a 34-yard field goal with 4:24 left. But Cook's tackle was the play of the drive. OK, the second most important. Jahvid Best going out with an injured hand during the drive following a 20-yard run was big, too.
> Miami caught a break with the missed field goal, but couldn't cash in. Jacory Harris gets sacked by linebacker Zach Follett and loses the football. Two plays later, Nate Longshore finds tight end Anthony Miller for a two-yard touchdown pass with 2:41 left. Does Jacory Harris have another comeback in him?
> Miami got the ball back with 2 minutes, 37 seconds left and ran eight offensive plays. But what everyone is going to be talking about this offseason is the clock management on that final drive. In a word: Disgusting.

The worst part is the timeouts wasted were problems with personel on the field. That has happened for 2 years. Often times, it happens following a timeout or a change of possession, when there is no excuse for it. I have always felt the first rule of college coaching is if you win, the players get the credit. If you lose, the coach takes the blame. Shannon better put this one on his shoulders.

HE DID IT AGAIN! HE DID IT AGAIN. READ MY BLOG OF EARLIER BEFORE THE 1ST HALF!!!!!!!

THE SAGE, THE ALBERT EINSTEIN OF CORAL GABLES. THAT BRAIN SURGEON. THAT ROCKET SCIENTIST F--IN DID IT AGAIN!

WITH OVER 1 MINUTE LEFT HE LET TIME RUN OUT AND DIDNTDO S---IT! HE WAS WAITING FOR NIX TO CALL TIME OUT! HE CALLED TIME OUT WITH 12 SEC LEFT!

PLEASE KIRBY HOCUTT, PLEASE, YOU NEED TO SIT DOWN WITH THESE TWO LOSERS AND EXPLAIN TO THEM THE WHYS ABOUT THEIR SALARIES. THE REASONS THEY GET PAID. IN FACT, THIS COACHING PERFORMANCE (NOT THE FUMBLE, BUT THE LAST MINUTE OF BOTH HALVES) DESERVES FOR THEM TO RETURN A WEEK'S PAY.

THIS WAS A "FINEABLE" PERFORMANCE BY THESE COACHES. AND A FIREABLE PERFORMANCE FOR NIX. RANDY SHANNON SHOULD BE GIVEN NO MORE THAN ONE YEAR TO BRING THIS TEAM TO 10-2, 0R 9-3 AT WORSE. HE SHOULD BE FIRED AFTER THAT IF THAT DOESNT HAPPEN. WHY? WHY?

HE LOOKED LOST. HE LOOKED LIKE HE WAS TAKING A NAP. HE DIDNT SHOW EMOTION. THAT RUBS OFF ON THE PLAYERS. THERE IS NO EMOTION, NO SWAGGER, NO FEELINGS INTO THEIR PLAY. IT MIRRORS THIS MAN, WHO SITS THERE ON THE SIDELINE, EMOTIONLESS, BARELY MAKING A FACE. IS HE LOST? DOES HE KNOW WHATHE IS DOING? PEOPLE SOMEONE NEEDS TO TELL US WHY HE IS STILL COACHING.

I agree without CHANGE next year will suck...bring in someone.......I guess now its GO DOLPHINS!!!!The Hurricanes let me down and I hope they know it!!!!!!!!

I want to believe that Randy wanted to see what Nix was capable of in a tight situation. I think he intentionally let his guy Patrick run the gameplan the way he wanted to evaluate his abilities. I think we can all agree that Coach Nix's play calling is awful. I live in the Atlanta area, and I watched his awful play calling at Ga Tech, and I am seeing more of the same now.

It's time for us to find a new OC, someone who isn't afraid to trust the game to a young QB, someone who is living in the present and not 2001. Randy, please find us a new OC for 2009.

If Auburn picked the loser they chose over Nix, isn't it time you find someone else? Is he really that a great a recruiter?

Just like everyone else, I can not put my frustration into words. Canes fans have known for a while that Shannon and Nix are incompetent, now the entire country can finally realize it.

Cal called the same running plays, we couldn't stop it. No in-game adjustments. We need to hire an assistant to manage the time. Because someone is falling to sleep at the wheel, and it's been all season long. We need major improvement in four areas OL, DL, LB, and Coaching. They grew as a team, but some of the upperclassmen got outplayed by the freshmen. Manny, can you give us your end of the season report card.

7-6 Baby!!!! Duh U Is Back! I’m soooooooo excited!

If Randy can continue his breath taking fast track learning curve at this break neck pace we should become eligible to play in our first ACC Title Game by 2017.

2007 we had the coaches, with no talent.

2008 we had the talent, with no coaches.

2009 we face reality as every fan outside the 305 has stated since day one, we don't have either.

Tell me where I'm wrong.......

Harris played well for a true freshman. His coaches let him down. His first good pass is what he needed to settle down and either Nix/Shannon were to slow on the uptick to figure that out.

They needed to turn him loose on the second series. The defense did their part - Best is a beast so get over it. Clock managent including TOs is embarassing. This is the second game I have watched where we go into the half with three timeouts. The two minute drill should have been in effect to get three points before the half.

Nix/Shannon calling the same formation and running plays up the gut afte a failed FG. We end up in pressure cooker situations 90% of the time on third down.

I don't know which coach ie Nix or Shannon is a french fry short of a Happy Meal but it has to be addressed. Jacory calmed down and played well enough to win that game but he got no help. How about letting him go to his HS receivers, how about sticking with routes near the sideline so it goes out of bounds or to our receiver.

Manny, call them on the carpet and find out if Nix is gone. We have got to pay for good talent in coaching, our baby Canes deserve it.

"Disgusting" is a good description....but I was shouting DISGRACEFUL as I was leaving the room. Shannon & Nix looked so confused....just step on the field and call the darn Time Out and you still have 45 seconds....crap man.....

Prediction: Nix is out...Shannon tried to let him do the end of the game and he didn't perform. Anyone know who we can convince to take the job??? Great talent. Great program. Crappy pay. Crappy city for families (at least to lure good coaches).

DISGRACEFUL

Everyone needs to relax!!! This game means absolutely nothing. Even with a win we were still going to be outside the top 25. I think a lot of good things happened tonight. 1) We have our quarterback(finally) 2) I think we found a running back with some vision. I like Coop and JJ but they are not great runners. They need to utilized in space. 3)I had my doubts about Nix, but he showed me enough tonight to feel good about next year.

I'm like everyone else wondering what happened on that last drive. How do you not have some plays set up for the 2 minute offense. It's not the time to run Chambers (although he had a decent game). They wasted 35 seconds then call a timeout after Harris threw the ball away. I don't have any words for what I just saw.

mra, you are right.. I am jus t so mad right now.. I need to vent..

Calm down people. The coaching was pretty horrible, but a big part of the loss was Jacory's youth. The coaching in the last 2 minutes was terrible, but remember: the Canes basically beat Cal for the majority of this game. This stings, but this was a big, big learning experience -- learning about the pressure, how to stop a dominant back, and so forth -- and this game will help next year's Canes tremendously. It stings now, and of course we want to complain because we lost. But through the sting, remember: The future is bright with Jacory -- and yes, even with Shannon coaching him.

RANDY SHANNON JUST SET BLACK COACHES BACK TEN YEARS.

I am a life time canes fan and i love the way they tried to use the size of the WR but we need more of that

Let the firings begin...

One more thing...If our line blocked anyone, the offense would look much different.

I have been trying to be patient and defend Randy Shannon all season long. However, there needs to be a huge improvement in the management of the game. Where is veteran Bill Young? They are all connected on head sets, why doesn't somebody say something about 35 seconds running off the clock? Then call a time out when the clock is not running?

End of first half, Shannon goes to the locker room with two timeouts in his pocket when the team was at midfield and had burned 1.5 minutes off the clock.

This has been happening all season, but its the first time I think it cost them a game.

Someone needs to take responsibilty for the poor play of the offensive line.

I really feel bad for the kids. I think Miami was the more talented team, but lost because Shannon coached scared at the end of the half, and Nix and Shannon were totally unprepared for the last drive.

Man, we had better time management when I played Optimist Football.

I personally feel that I could get Nix's job!!!He is terrible and Shannon has no control..did you see nix wave off shannon at the end...come on...who runs this team?

Shannon must be a scary SOB because nobody has the balls to ask him tough questions. Whoever is doing the post-game interview on WQAM is kissing his -ss. Softball questions.

That last drive will overshadow what was otherwise a very promising game from Miami.

Sonny, You're an idiot. Lets fire Nix get and get a real OC in here. The fact that Shannon is our coach has nothing to do w/ his skin color and making UM look good. And I'm White btw.

its amazing how after a loss everyone wants to fire shannon. well, ive been calling for his head since the last game at the OB agoinst virginia. he quit. the only thing that changed this year was teams like virg. werent as good. or else UM would have a losing record. next year fans will suffer through, and the univ. will do nothing. they{RS and UM}, dont care if anyone comes to games. hes the coach, and hes cheap. actually the off. did better than i expected, the defense cant stop the run. recruiting cant fix the problem without coaches. honestly, if i was a good recruit, i would not consider UM, they dont look like they will be much better. SAVE THE PROGRAM-FIRE SHANNON

Hire Mike Irvin as coach!!!

Some, Randy is not going to take the blame for the lost. Someone is getting thrown under the bus. Randy or Nix should have called a timeout, oh they called the first two on what. Someone needs to be held accountable.

Im done...gonna go drink my loss away..til the fins play....Go Dolphins!!!

35 years of watching the Canes and I can hardly take it anymore. I can think of a hundred things I would rather do than watching another football game. I see no progress in this program and haven't since 2003, honestly. Rebuilding? How about scraping, especially the inept group of assistants with whom mediocrity resides. There is no passion on or off the field. 3 straight losses to conclude a season again. The only streaks UM has been consistent at is losing. How much development occurs when you lose b/c no one on the coaching staff can tell time on a play clock. No timeouts used in the 1st half but 2 used in the 1st 5 minutes of the 2nd half. What the f&%#. Give the kids a chance to win, don't run delays, screens, draws, etc. Nix, please go back to Auburn and spare us the 3-legged offense!

Yes..Lets fire everyone!!!! People without knowledge of the game should not be allowed to post on here. These ignorant comments are hilarious fire, fire, fire....start over...lol...jerks

This team was set so far back by Coker's lack of recruiting hence no draft picks this year!!

I have been telling you all since the day Shannon was hired that he is a complete JOKE. If his first two seasons as coach doesnt prove it, nothing will. That was about the worst coached game I have EVER seen from the University of Miami.

HARRIS DID OK. HE DID CHOKE AT THE END THANKS TO OUR PATHETIC, OVERRATED O-LINE. YEAH YOU MEATHEADS ON THE O-LINE- YOU STUNK, BAD.

I THOUGHT JH HAD THE STARTING POSITION SEALED HAD HE WON THE GAME. BUT LET ME TELL YOU, IT IS STILL UP FOR GRABS. HE LOBS PASSES AND IS STILL QUITE IMMATURE. NONETHELESS HE DID OK. B-.

THE COACHES LOST THE GAME. PERIOD. WE SHOULD HAVE PLAYED FOR AT LEAST A FG AT THE END OF THE FIRST HALF, AND THE CLOCK MANAGEMENT AT THE END WAS NAUSEATING. NIX, YOU ARE A BAD OC, YOU ARE CLUELESS, YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BEINAG AN OC AND YOU SHOULD LEAVE. JUST GO.

MANNY- YOU WOULD DO ALL OF US A FAVOR IF YOU COULD GET A ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH RS AND/OR KIRBY HOCUTT, AND ASK THESE TOUGH QUESTIONS. AND DONT BE CONTENT WITH ONE OF THOSE RANDY SHANNON NON-ANSWERS. LOOK, IF HE DOESNT CARE ABOUT "WE BLOGGERS" HE DOESNT CARE ABOUT BOOSTERS OR THE FANS. I FOR ONE CONTRIBUTE LOTS OF THOUGH TO THE PROGRAM AND I HATE WHAT I SEE. I SEE NO PROGRESS. I SEE AN UNEMOTIONAL COACH AND A PI$$ POOR COACHING STAFF.

PEOPLE: NEXT YEAR: OKLAHOMA
@FSU
@VT
@NC
CLEMSON

OUCH!

We are going to win the ACC in 2009 and in 2010 win it all!!!!!

BAWAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA

This team will NEVER win ANYTHING with Randy Shannon as head coach. If you think they will, I want to place that bet with you RIGHT NOW. Lets put your money where all your mouths are!

Shannon won't be fired, but dammit you have to let go of Nix and nobody brings up Bill Young. This old man coaches like it. Coker-esque. He was way over his head coming to Miami. This isn't BS Kansas. This old man ALL YEAR LONG could not find a way to stop the run. Secondary has their heads up their butts. RED ZONE D? Please...let Jacory start next year and screw Marve. He had his shot. So much talent so little coaching. Pathetic year all around, this crap sums it all up. Please 2009 where art thou?

There is an old equation in coaching. For every freshman that starts you will lose a game. This is not literally a perfect equation, but it does hold true most of the time.

Randy Shannon = Ron Zook without the coaching ability and emotion

Can someone ask Kirby what the status is on Shannon's contract extension?

Are we going in with a lame duck head coach?

Why would recruits want to come here knowing Miami is going to fire their head coach?

all this crape about jacorry Harris never having lost a game as a starter. There you go Jacoory. there is your first.

and youknow what? I hope you and the other freshmen get over your NW Bulls years. Its over. As you can see, you were harased by a white boy all day, and he didnt grow upplaying in South Florida. the speed of the college game is 1000X that of high school. Get over it!

Brandon Harris- take off your Number one jersey and put a zero one on. You need to work hard over the off season.

Glenn Cook, Buh bye
rest of you pathetic seniors who quit on us last year and did no better this year- see ya.

Why have Jacory rolled to the left and he's right handed. The tackle was getting beat . You have to blame the coaches for this lost. Young- defense looking like swiss cheese, Nix - vanilla play calling, how many plays, back coming out the backfield. He's been here for two years were is the improvement. And the CEO- need to lighten up and go let JJ mentor you on coaching, and all the fundamentals on coaching. And time management. Did James get hurt? It was nice seeing Chambers running the ball.

Randy Shannon's EXCUSES:

Year 1---It was Coker's fault and the DC. DC fired

Year 2---It is Nix's fault. Fire Nix.

Year 3---??????? It is the Ibis' fault. Fire the Ibis

Year 4----?????? It is that chick on the herald that does the UM inteviews fault. Fire random Herald chick.

The team played well tonight, they should heart, made plays, and were in it for most of the game.

Randy Shannon's clock managment is terrible!!!! Why didn't he get everyone up on the line and either call a play or spike the ball. The pass routes should've gone towards the sideline, it just looked totally disorganized.

Pat Nix called a good game, he made adjustments to the pressure and committed to getting the ball to the TE. We were aggressive at times and through the ball downfield.

Jacory Harris had a great game. He was poised and made plays when he had to. Jacory made a couple of mistakes, but it doesn't change the fact that he played a great game.

The offensive line was being dominated for a while. They got their act together in the second half, but they should've been more consistent. This was the major issue in the game.

Overall, good game guys...proud of you.

This was the F@&cking Emerald Bowl.....Who cares what the final score was. This game was a scrimmage.

WQAM is asking Jacory Harris, an 18 year old, tougher questions than they asked Shannon!!!
And for the record, Jacory is taking more responsibility for the loss than Shannon did. He comes across as a bright guy who has TEAM as his first priority. I was a Marve guy early on but Harris is a quality kid and at 18, he will mature so much next year.

This is the worst coached team in college football. What a terrible 2 min. drill to end the game. Embarrassing!

our d-backs are the worse we have ever had at miami. #26 must be rolling in his grave (RIP). They played well for 2 minutes in the first half and then gave up the big play over and over.

"recruiting cant fix the problem without coaches" - mike

What the hell are you talking about? Coaches don't win games, especially in college football. Players do. The coaches may have lost the game tonight, but they probably lost it before the season began.

just watched the game season ticket holder since 1991 but not anymore imnot giving any more money until they learn how to spend it right NIX F---ING SUCKS and im not sure shannon has the ability to be a head coach will watch from the couch come back when they get there S--T together always will be a cane but cant keep giving money to idiots that dont know how to run a football program better get use to this crap

I have to say I am not as upset as I thought I would be. Which is actually a really bad sign. It means that I've become used to this group screwing things up. That 2 minutes drill was terrible. I haven't seen anything so bad in a long time. Then again I think back to the UF game. Here we were with a group of freshmen against what will probably be the national title winners and we throw bubble screen after bubble screen after bubble screen. Even when we were down 16-3. You have nothing to lose at that point, because if you don't take the chance you lose and if you do and get intercepted you lose too. It's something we should have seen coming. When it comes down to it this group of coaches are too conservative, don't manage the clock and call stupid plays. If there isn't marked improvement next year, then heads should roll. And I don't mean a BCS birth. A solid 8-4 where we found our QB, a top WR and some defense, but simply got beat by the likes of OU, UNC and FSU. It's not even about more wins at this point. It's just looking better out there.

Jaime:

Glenn Cook made a lot of big plays tonite. He's not that talented, but he maxed out what he had.

Brandon Harris is making progress, he's just not there yet. He's gonna be a player one day.

Lay off of these 2 guys. What's the use at this point.

Firings all around!

Miami is at a new all-time low. Randy, screw discipline as your mantra and get onto development before your talent cabinet runs bear. You must feel real great with nothing to point for new 2009 recruits. Anyone else diasagrees w/ that and your delusional.
