Nix fired, wanted to open offense up

The Miami Hurricanes have parted ways with offensive coordinator Patrick Nix. Really, that's not much of a surprise. The bigger surprise -- what he told our Susan Miller Degnan after she, Barry Jackson and I spent the day trying to hunt him down.

Patricknix100_64Nix said he and Shannon split because of philosophical differences. "I wanted to be a little bit more wide open - no-huddle, spread out, go for it. And he wanted to be more two-back, conservative. It was a fine line in trying to balance the two. And not that one is better than the other, its just a different philosophy."

For most of Canes nation this may be seen as a relief -- especially after the way Miami's offense sputtered in the final two minutes of the Emerald Bowl. All season long, fans ripped into Nix for leading an offense which finished 89th in the country in total yardage despite finishing 3rd in the ACC in scoring at 24 points per game.

Jacory_harrisMonday afternoon I spoke with the father of quarterback Jacory Harris, who told me after relaying the rumors to his son that Nix was likely out that Jacory "sounded very disappointed." "He said he felt real bad for Coach Nix, but he understands this is all part of what big time football is about," Rodney Harris said. "He's always had a great relationship with Coach Nix, been to his house. He's always felt like he was a great guy."

The irony is if Nix's part of the story in relation to what he wanted with this offense is true, then Jacory Harris is not going to be happy with Nix leaving and Shannon staying. "I know the one thing Jacory would like to see with whoever the new coordinator is, is someone who will open up the offense a bit more. Jacory likes to open it up, throw the football. He wants to attack."

> Today's news is likely just the beginning of the changes. Several sources I spoke with this afternoon told me more changes are expected with other assistant coaches in the near future.

Robert_marve> I also consider today's Nix announcement the last straw for quarterback Robert Marve, who has been considering transferring for weeks. Nix and Marve were obviously close.

If it is true that Nix wanted to open up the offense and spread it out then it seems maybe Shannon was the problem!
===============================================
Yep.

We need to throw it on first downs a bit. That's kinda scary, but the truth is at GT Nix didn't exactly light the world on fire. Should be an interesting hire.

Sad times coming to the U. Tim Harris has no degree and NO he didn't play at NW with RS. He played at the High (As in MIAMI HIGH). Chud is joining Butch at NC, as reported by the Charlotte Observer.

Finally RS is running out of options and his tactics of undermining his bosses don't work anymore. He rat on Greg Mark (Who had 8 All-Amreicans in 7 years of being the DL Coach) and Fat Dee fired Greg. They've hired Clint Hurt who's a JOKE that can't coach. Then RS rat on Soldinger and Kehoe. Now he has Michael Barrow who opposing coaches laugh, it happened before the GT game and the FSU game, because of his coverages.

Randy what goes around, comes around.

Happy 2009 and looking forward to REAL coaches like Frank Haith and Jim Morris.

To whoever said that you have to have a college degree to coach in college football, that is bull s**t. UCF's head coach George O'Leary didn't graduate from college or obtain a degree of some kind and he's the head coach. 2nd, to mcnairuser, Randy Shannon attended Miami Norland Senior High School, not Northwestern.

I sure hope Shannon has an OC already picked if not he's not very bright! Our recruits need to know who our OC is asap. Wide open or pro set either style works with a good offensive line, what's not working is Shannon's coaching ability. There is know doubt he can recruit but does he have the skill to coach them up?

A master sham Ice played at MIAMI JACKSON buddy ur wrong to

God I hope Harris is not who Shannon has in mind. That's all we need another guy that is inexperienced at this level to come in and try to learn on the go. We had that in a DC last year and the last 2 years we have had that in a head coach. Nix is full of crap, his offenses sucked at GA tech and Reggie Ball never got better from his freshman year to he finally graduated. Also if that mess he calls an offense was attacking that was the slowest moving, most boring Spread offense I have ever seen. And we know Randy doesn't even know when to call a timeout and when not to. What Miami needs to do first is beg Gary Stevens to come back and hope and pray that he will come for the QB's sake. If that don't work maybe they could get someone who actually knows what it means to attack a defense. Who is Boise States offensive coordinator anyway? Their offense always looks good and they had a freshman QB that looked like he knew what he was doing. If Stevens falls through than this guy should be asked to come aboard. That is if Shannon seriously wants to keep this job.

Randy Shannon is a Joke. Fires his DC last year, OC this year. Who is left to point the finger at next year?

He wasn't ready to be a HC. Hopefully his new OC selection will be better than our current DC, but given his past decision making....I doubt it.

It is about leadership and Randy obviously doesn't have it.

Also he needs to call Soldinger, Kehoe and Greg Mark and see if he can't get them to come back too. Stoutland sucks and all Hurtt does is pitch a fit on the sideline. Get rid of them and recruit offensive lineman like you lives depend on it. Because no matter what offense you run there isn't aa one that works without the big boys of front. And while your lives may not depend on it your jobs do. So instead of taking some time off you better find and name an offensive coordinator so we do not lose any recruits, Shannon.

To DAU,

Thanks teach

Thanks for pointing out my poor grammer and incorrect spelling. From this message forward I will be more gramatically correct. DEAL?

conservative! RANDY NEEDS TO GO BECAUSE NO MATTER WHO HE HIRES IT WILL BE THE SAME RESULT RANDY DONT KNOW SH_T ABOUT OFFENSE

Waaaandy will not make it.

Waaaandy will not make it.

You know, i always had that in mind: why not bring coker back. He was a good OC for butch. He helped coach up some good NFL talent. Offense was never a problem, when he only had to call the plays. I don't think that Chudz is gonna come back. To be quite honest,i don't think Tim Harris(just because he knows these players) is the next OC. I think he was just brought in for recruiting purposes. But if Randy does make that decision, god help him, god help us all. And if for no other reason, bring Coker back because he looks pretty damn sad calling those ESPNU games. But Randy better have someone in place quick, like by the end of the week!

First, it's complaining about Marve starting over Harris. Then, it was complaining about Nix's play-calling. Now that Nix is gone, it's Randy Shannon. It's just complaining, complaining, complaining. SHUT UP ALREADY.

So long Nix..Goodbye Marve...thank goodness this should have been done, before the start of the season, we lost 3 games as result of bad play calling and trying to pacify an inconsistent quarter back in Kyle Wright Jr. This opens up room for recruiting a good QB I only wished it had happened sooner So we could have gotten Eugene Smith from Miramar..Dang!But things are starting to come together and with a year of maturity for the freshmen on Defense and Offense and the additional scholarships, we should be in the top 10 next year and play for a major bowl. Great Job Randy you are doing it the right way.

First Nix, then Marve...wow.

Randy and his Northwestern crew are running everyone out of coral gables and the program straight into the ground.

Bring back Coker

ERIC MANGINI AS HC, OKAY WE CAN KEEP SHANNON TO RECRUIT THE TALENTED 305!!!

wow is delussional, the only reason the U have 7 wins is b'coz of the northwestern crew, where the hell are u from anyways??? washington state?? where all sports go to dying!?!

wow is the correct name for you, coz' you're wowing everybody here with ur stupidness!!!!!

i understand people taking shots at RS, but to take shots at the only good thing this team have is straight up disrespectful to the "U", it's definitely a big slap to SEAN SPENCE, since he's the only consistent player out there on that team, and where did the dude come from??? that northwestern crew who u so called the school that brings down the "U", wow, stop being stupid ayt, you gonna call out someone, not the kids but the coach only!!!

First Nix, then Marve...wow.

Randy and his Northwestern crew are running everyone out of coral gables and the program straight into the ground.

Bring back Coker

Yeah, a top recruiting class year after year is running the program into the ground...dumb@ass.

Randy Shannon is right in this case, we need to get back to a more pro-style offense. IMO a physical offense that can pound the ball at teams is the best way to effectively control a game.

You can always open things up when you need/want to. This offense works for USC at the college level. It also works for just about every NFL team.

I wonder where Marve will end up, for his sake I hope it's not Florida. Tim Tebow is a tough act to follow and Marve would be putting himself in a bad situation. If he left it up to me I would tell him to go to Texas Tech or LSU.

Tim 'Ice' Harris as OC??? That would just be insane, I would ask for Shannon's resignation if he suggested that. The guy has no experience at a major program. That would ruin Miami for years.

This is my question. Does Nix think that a pro set offense is conservative? Or does he truly beleive Randy just wants to be conservative? I am all for the pro set offense. I can't stand these gimmicky spread offenses. We get good enough atheltes where we can use the pro set offense. Now, that does not mean I want to be conservative. We have to be balance. I don't want Alabama's style offense where they constantly run and then throw on third down. I want it more like USC's offense. Throw the HBs and the TEs the ball on first down. Go deep here and there. Just balance it up. But if Randy really wants to be conservative then we are doomed. Randy has this play not to lose mentality and that MUST end. Look at the Dolphins, there is 5 mins to go in the game and their plan is to keep getting first downs so the other team does not get the ball. Randy's philosophy is run it three times and punt it and let our defense win. That must stop. We have to try to score points. 2 mins left in the half...3 timeouts....we have to try to score. So if Randy wants the pro set offense but wants to attack then he is right on track. If he truly wants to be conservative then were screwed.

Like many of my fellow Cane fans, I ain't buying Nix's contention about philosophical differences. First, his playing calling was and has always been abysmal. He had 1 year experience of calling plays when he came here and his deficiencies in that department were obvious. Secondly, I don't think these young QBs learned anything new about playing the position under his guidance. Both Marve and Jacory played this season from what they had learned in high school, that much was obvious. Thirdly, he has shown poor clock management skills for 2 years now and that has absolutely nothing to do with the offensive system. I think that this is what ultimately cost him his job. After that sad performance in the Emerald Bowl Shannon had no choice but to fire him. Lastly, If there is any truth at all to his claims that "philosophical differences" were the reason for his being let go, that makes him out to look even more like an idiot because is not appropriate to run a wide open offense with a crappy offensive line and freshman receivers and QBs!!

It has been said here before on these pages that Shannon's worst 2 mistakes as head honcho were his initial choice of OC and DC. It has taken 2 years but it looks like has finally remedied these problems. If there is no improvement in 2009, he will have to remedy his third big mistake, taking the job as head coach in the first place.

There is a big push to get Chud in per an insider.
I hope it happens. Anyone who doesnt think he isnt a major upgrade is smoking something.

Three offensive coordinators in the last four years. Are the offensive problems the fault of the coordinators or the personnel? I think it is the personnel - we haven't had any good offensive linemen in years - without an offensive line you can't run, you can't pass.

Nix is wrong, and was not a good OC. The "pro set" UM runs attracts the recruits and has produced a string of NFL players from UM over the last two decades. The pros don't consistently run the spread, and UM does not have the personnel to run a spread at a major D-1 level. Marve and Harris are no Tebow- or Chase Daniel-type QBs. Only a handful of D-1 programs sucessfully run the spread while each UM team that won a national championship, as well as Okla., Tex., Alabama, Florida's national championship team of 2006, and many other sucessful teams/programs run a pro set. UM should not run a spread offense simply because that is what Marve ran in high school and that is what he was comfortable with. UM does not have the personnel to sucessfully run it. It would have been a disaster. Plus, after watching Nix's conservative Georgia Tech offenses, it hard to believe that Nix got this sudden revelation to change his entire history and offensive philosophy.

This year Miami needed to be more conservative on Offense, because has anyone seen their Defense?

If their Defense was stout, they would be able to take more chances by opening it up.

My question is what does "opening it up" mean? WR screen passes, or a bunch of swing and hitch routes to the outside?

The offense under Nix didn't have a vertical passing game. Nor were there combo routes, or plays to get the WR's open. Everybody talked about "the WR's not getting separation", there were things the OC could have incorporated - like having more routes than the 10 on the passing tree.

That being said, I thought Nix was alright in terms of the diversity of formations, however he didn't attack the entire field. I also said that Miami needs a dedicated QB Coach to help these young guys develop.

I wi

Chud would be a great hire, the only concerns with him is recruiting (word on the street is that he isn't very good at it), but Im sure he could work on his recruiting abilities. Next, I don't buy Nix's claim that there were philosophical differences. He was given complete control of the offense, and he definitely was allowed to open up the offense. Nix spread out the offense all the time, and he would do it at the most inopportune times, or he would call a stupid bubble screen which would get blown up. Another reason you can't believe Nix is he ran the same type of boring inconsistent offense at GT for one season, and then he was stripped of his play calling ability. Chan Gailey (GT head coach at the time) was calling the plays when they were leading the acc, and it was Gailey's play calling, along with turnovers by both the offense and special teams, that caused the UM defense to struggle, not Nix's play calls.

I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR COACH RANDY SHANNON AND I PERSONALLY FELT THE OFFENSE WAS TO STAGNANT. MY PROBLEM THOUGH IS IF WHAT COACH NIX SAID IS TRUE THE THE JACORY HARRIS I HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING THE LAST TWO YEARS WILL NEVER MATERIALIZE. MIAMI HAS THE SPEED, ESPECIALLY WITH TOMMY STREETER COMING BACK NEXT YEAR TO RUN A POWERFUL SPREAD OFFENSE. I FELT THE PLAY CALLING A LOT THIS YEAR WAS TO SUSPECT AND CONSERVATIVE. ALSO I HOPE THE NEW COACH WILL GIVE M R. HARRIS A CHANCE TO CALL SOME OF HIS OWN PLAYS. THIS YEAR HE SEEMED TO ROBOTIC, NOT THE SMOOTH, RELAXED JACORY HARRIS THAT I HAD THE PLEASURE OF WATCHING THE LAST TWO YEARS AND IN DALLAS TEXAS. REMEMBER THIS YOUNG MAN WENT 30-0 WINNING TWO STATECHAMPIONSHIPS AND ONE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, WHILE BEING ALLOWED TO CALL HIS OWN PLAYS. LET'S NOT WAIT UNTIL HIS CONFIDENCE IS BROKEN TO THEN GIVE HIM THAT OPPORTUNITY. I REALIZE WE ALL HAVE TO CRAWL BEFORE WE WALK, BUT WE ALSO MUST REMEMBER THAT SOME PEOPLE CRAWL VERY FAST AND WALK ACCORDINGLY. NOW THERE IS ONE MORE THING I WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS, NO CONTROVERSY INTENDED , BUT JUST MY HEART FELT EXPRESSION(OPINION). ROBERT MARVE HAS ONLY BEEN TO THE UM TWO YEARS AND HE HAS HAD HIS SHARE OF CONTROVERSY. THE LAST ONE IN MY OPINION WOULD HAVE GOTTEN MOST PLAYERS PERMANENTLY KICKED OFF THE TEAM. ROBERT MARVE COMMITTED AN OFFENSE, IT DOESN'T MATTER WETHER IT'S A FELONY OR A MISDEMEANOR, ONCE YOU ELUDE OR ATTEMPT TO ELUDE(FLEE) FROM THE POLICE THIS OFFENSE NOW BECOMES A FELONY. MANY PLAYERS FROM VARIOUS DIFFERENT SCHOOLS HAVE GOTTEN KICKED OFF THE TEAM FOR FAR LESS THAN WHAT M R. MARVE DID. WHILE I WISH THE BEST FOR ROBERT AND THINK HE IS A VERY GOOD QUARTERBACK. I FEEL THAT WITH THE CONTROVERSY HE'S BRINGING. THE UM MAY BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT HIM. I KNOW THAT THERE ARE COLLEGES OUT THERE WHO WILL TAKE HIM AT THE DROP OF A COIN, BUT I APPLAUD COACH SHANNON FOR TAKING THE STAND THAT NO PLAYER NO MATTER HOW VALUABLE , IS " ABOVE THE LAW" REMEMBER " A HOUSE WITHOUT RULES; BECOMES AN UNRULED HOUSE". ROMANS 8:28 PSALMS 100

Lets be real, Nix saying h wanted to open up the offense? C'mon now...

First of all when he was at Georgia Techdid they run four ides and a single back? No,, End of discussion

Secondly, It wouldn't have been smart to open up the offense, keep in mind all of the interceptions Marve was throwing at the beggining of the games.

We had Freshman quarterbacks, freshman receivers, and you want to let'er rip by air'n it out, while having seasoned running backs in the backfield?

Conservitive was the right thing to do, the Offensive Line simply sucked at run blocking...

Shannon , Pllllllllllllease hire an Offensive line coach from the big-ten, and spend as much time recruiting OL as you do going after skill guys...

Opening up lanes to run will cure everything!!

(I do hate that Shawnberry Mcneal is leaving, kid is good!)

Was glad to see this change, but it was interesting and a bit scary to hear that RS didn't really allow Nix to run the offense completely and that Nix wanted to make Marve the full time starter, but Randy would not allow it.

I hope this isn't like Tampa where Dungy (Great respect for the Coach) replaced OC's but always limited what they could do with the offense, leading to his firing. Ironically, Dungy won a Super Bowl with the OC in Indy that he would not hire in Tampa his final year. It took him getting fired to let the offense go and he went on to win a Super Bowl.

If it's true get Chud quick and let Marve go where ever he wants except ACC. Marve is a good QB but Harris has a quicker release and a much better feel for the game by far. Shannon's restrictions on his schools is only hurting Shannon's best asset, recruiting

I hope we are not going to regret not hiring Butch Davis

U guys can't see the forest for the trees.

As a "gator" I can see through all your desperate rantings. U all should thank your lucky stars ... nun of you have nothing to do with any decisions being made over the next couple of days or weeks for the UM football program.

Looking at this situation from afar:

One, UM will always have a better chance at a dynasty and domination than UF. It's the nature of the beast.

UF will go on runs for a couple of years
(like the one we're on now) and then things will breakdown, recruiting against FSU, UM and other SEC schools and or our coach will leave for ND or the NFL. It's coming. Then we go into oblivion for a decade or 2 or 3.

UM is a school that has developed a dynasty in the 80' thru to '01. Without the NCAA "Death Penalty" - God only knows, U guys would have a couple more rings, no doubt. But, and I hate to say this, UM has that something special. The guys that "want to play at UM" really want to play at UM. There is a real brotherhood at UM that other schools, including mine, would die for.

Just look at what happened after the Death Penalty; Only 2 schools have ever received it - SMU and UM. SMU never recovered but UM won a National Championship ... what 6 years later. With a team voted by SI as the "Greatest Team
of the Twentieth Century".

U can't see the forest for the trees.

I live in the Keys and speak with Jimmy Johnson on occasion and JJ was pushing UM hard to hire RS. According to JJ and RS they speak daily. So the advise RS is getting is priceless. But most importantly JJ says RS is following the plan they put together after his hire. Remember, Cokers firing and RS's hire was late into the recruiting process.

So they (JJ,RS and UM admin) knew that completing the coaching staff was a 2 to 3 year process. To attract quality at OC and DC RS needed talent, a great recruiting class (got that) and money. Shalalala finally came through to get Young and now U guys are waiting for the OC.

So, all those bone heads that think RS might be gone after a "bad season" next year. Don't hold your breath. The idea (according to JJ) is to get the program back to national dominance, by following a well thought out plan - go back the successful recruiting plan that Coker trashed - attract quality coaching - build up both Lines of Scrimmage - coach up the talent - win championships.

JJ asked us one day, while we were watching USC kill somebody, do you see anything that reminds you of any other teams? We were all silent. (Heck, we weren't football experts) JJ said that back in '99 or 2000 he got a call from Pete Carroll to talk about the UM offense. They discussed it for awhile then JJ contacted Coker and put them together. JJ said what we were watching was the UM offense in different jerseys.

U can't see the forest for the trees.

So, RS brought back the successful recruiting plan that Coker trashed - he's attracting quality coaching - he's build up both Lines of Scrimmage - he's coaching up the talent - he is going to win championships.

Well take it from a gator fan - stop wining the UM football program is on the rise.

Go Gator Beat Sooners

According to JJ RS has been on PN's ass to make more aggressive play calling. It's just that PN is not able to teach or communicate to his student athletes.

He's a liar when he blames RS for his in ability to be a play caller. Just look at his GT history.

Firing coordinators is not the solution when the man on top is the problem.... mark my words, Shannon is not "Head Coach" material and soon someone at the school will realize that the head man has to go too! Until that happens, get used to 6 loss seasons and bottom tear bowl games...
