Marve granted release (confirmed)

It doesn't come as much of a surprise anymore, but quarterback Robert Marve has been granted his release and will leave the program. UM sports information staff has just sent a release confirming  the report by Canesport earlier this morning. Marve started 11 games for UM and was suspended for two others.

A little more than a week ago, Marve voiced his frustrations through his high school Robert_marvecoach Robert Weiner about his strained relationship with coach Randy Shannon and his displeasure with sharing the quarterback duties. Jacory Harris started in place of Marve at the Emerald Bowl. And it appears the writing was on the wall for Marve. Early Tuesday morning, UM coach Randy Shannon spoke with WQAM's Joe Rose and told him regardless if Marve returned, Harris would go into the spring as the starter.

"If Robert chooses to leave the University of Miami, we got Jacory, we got Taylor Cook, we got Cannon Smith, so we’ll be fine," Shannon said. "We’ve got enough talent on this team, we’ve got an experienced quarterback with Jacory, if Robert leaves, Jacory will be our guy, he’ll lead the way, because he has a lot of game experience...

"Jacory did everything to be our guy right now. Robert has to accept that hey, I have to be a person that is willing to do what we are doing at the University of Miami and I think he will if he wants that opportunity to do it, but if not and he wants to transfer, I will grant him his transfer."

Stay tuned to hear Marve's part of the story soon.

> Among other things Randy discussed during his interview, his idea about where he would like to go with the offense moving forward. Monday, Patrick Nix was fired and told The Miami Herald he and Shannon had philosophical differences -- he wanted to open it up more and Shannon wanted to play more of a traditional style.

"If you look at our team, we’ve got tailbacks, we’ve got fullbacks, we’ve got tight ends, we’ve got Jacory_harrisreceivers, now we have all those things in place. I just want a team where we can score some points," Shannon told Rose. "If you watch SC [Southern Cal], it’s a pro-style offense, they use multiple sets, do a lot of great things. Do they have a fullback? Yes. Do they have receivers? Yes. Do they have tight ends? Yes. Do they have three or four tailbacks? Yes."

"You want to be able to have a pro-style offense that can score points. I can’t sit up there and say that we’re gonna line up in 2-back and play smash-mouth; we can line up in one back, we can line up in 2-backs, and do a lot of great things. We should be able to throw the ball out of every personnel group that we’re doing. You want more of a pro-style offense that can score a lot of points.

Jimmy_graham> Not that many of you probably care to talk hoops at a time like this. But I just got back from Frank Haith's press conference. The news of the day is a bruised right wrist will likely keep Jimmy Graham out until ACC play. Graham slipped getting out of the shower two weeks ago and banged his wrist against the toilet. "We've got to give him some time, let that thing heal," Haith said. "He's tried to play with it and we've got to let it heal, because we need him down the stretch."

The injury should open up more playing time for redshirt freshman Julian Gamble, who has been playing well. He had 10 points and three rebounds in 12 minutes at St. John's. "With or without Jimmy's injury, he's earned more playing time," Haith said.

> I'll have an interview with Julian up for you later.

Manny,

Do we target Denard Robinson now, or would it be to little to late??

Marve could go to Jacksonville State to compete with Ryan Perelioux.

This situation needs to go away ASAP...Marve's high school coach is an idiot.

He should go to TX Tech, that is the perfect offense for him.

Good luck Marve with his on and off field performance why would Tenn, Fl, LSU want him?

Marve who????

He's yesterday's news.
Let's move on!

Don't you guys find it strange that it's reported Randy Shannon doesn't have a good relationship with many of his players? Look at the way he treated his own son this season. Reading that they didn't really communicate has always been a red flag to me.

BY BARRY JACKSON
[email protected]
Robert Marve's father wasn't the only one bashing Randy Shannon on Tuesday. Marve's high school coach, Tampa Plant's Robert Weiner, also lashed out and said: ''A player of mine won't play for Randy Shannon'' again.

Weiner said tight end Orson Charles, whom UM had been recruiting, definitely won't be attending Miami now. Marve was UM's only Plant player on the roster.

Weiner -- who has led Plant to two of the past three state Class 4A football titles, including this year's -- described Shannon's treatment of Marve as ''egregious'' and said Shannon's insistence that Marve cannot transfer to an ACC, SEC or Florida-based school ``is the last line in a series of slaps in the face. It's . . . spitefulness and vengeance.''

Weiner said Shannon and Marve spoke for less than two minutes Tuesday, and the ''last of many cowardly acts was the fact Randy didn't tell him'' about the transfer restrictions.

Weiner said that, during last offseason, Marve asked Shannon several times about rumors that he would be suspended, and 'Shannon told him, `Don't worry about it. I'll take care of it.' '' (Marve was suspended for the opener.) ''I've never heard of any coach who disciplines a player eight months after it happened,'' Weiner said.

Earlier this month, ''Robert wanted to explain his [academic-related] suspension to Shannon, and he spent less than two minutes talking, and Shannon dismissed him,'' Weiner said. ``Forget being a coach -- that's not a way to be a human being and relate to other human beings.

''X's and O's are important, although I don't think he's very good at that, either,'' Weiner added. ``There's not one time Randy Shannon has shown any care for that young man. People say he's a stern disciplinarian, but I don't see how you can coach without communicating with your players.''

Shannon, offered a chance to respond, did not return a call left through a UM spokesman. In Shannon's defense, he started Marve for 11 games and would have allowed him to stay and compete for the starting job if he wanted.

Weiner said Marve ``is not a perfect young man. When we sent Robert there, we sent him to become a better man. We thought Randy and his staff would be people who would do that. That's a dreadful mistake we made.''

Weiner also said fired offensive coordinator Patrick Nix and tight ends/special teams coach Joe Pannunzio were supportive of Marve, ``but the coaches who believed in him were not allowed to express that because of the environment.''

SHANNON NEEDS TO QUITE ALL THIS SLANDER... THIS COULD REALLY HURT THE PERCEPTION THAT THESE YOUNG KIDS/RECRUITS HAVE... IF NOT SHANNON THEN THE PLAYERS THAT HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM NEED TO SAY SOMETHING..

anyone read gary feeman's take at itu? any original points?

Hey, marve fans, Marve started 11 of 13 games for the Hurricanes, but also served two suspensions, including one that kept him out of the Emerald Bowl. 13 minus 11 = 2,two Suspensions are the only games that Robert Marve didnt start but , you guys are calling this personal issues. Randy stood behind marve when everyone else wanted cut his throat.Marve won Mr footabll right? who broke his records the very next year, with a bigger school and better competition - JACORY HARRIS. Thats the problem, Jacory is the better of the two and mr. cry baby marve and mr. cry baby high school coach konws that. Randy laid down rules and robert didnt follow them, Randy's trying to clean up the program from being called thug U. Robert was feed with a golden spoon and randy gave him a silver one and robert cant handle that.

Lew Cane- That's right, homey- you said it!

If this BOY (because he is a boy and has not acted like a man) cannot compete to TRY to win the starting position (regardless if RS like him or not), he is not ready for a D-1 school let alone the canes.

Robby- You camoe to the U you need to compete. NOTHING is guaranteed at the U. This was the case with EVERYONE before you. You aint nothing special, so you woint be treated specially. Kenny Kelly a world class athlete (better athlete than you), was beat out by a freshman qb (Dorsey) simply because KD was better and Kenny did not appreciate that and went to the major leagues.

Nobody is guaranteed a starting position. YOU earn it.

Nobody starts for 4 years:
mark Richt sat
Jim kelly sat
Vinnie and Bernie sat
Steve Walsh sat
Craig Erickson and Torreta sat
Clement, Kelly, Crudup, Dorsey, all sat. Wright sat- and at least never quit like you.

Now go on with your whiney self and sit on someone else's benach for a year. Maybe their coach will hug you and tell you how much they love you-- Is that you want?

ESPN is also starting to pick up the story...

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3800390

This isn't really about Marve anymore, it's about Randy Shannon.

Where's our AD with a press release? Just say that Marve had to be disciplined and he decided to transfer.

Are any players going to come out and defend Shannon?

ROBERT MARVE IS A SPOILED ATHLETE WHO HAS HAD EVERYTHING HANDED TO HIM BECAUSE IN HIGH SCHOOL HE DISPLAYED AN ABILITY TO RUN AND THROW AGAINST INFERIOR TALENT IN THE TAMPA AREA!!! HIS FATHER IS A FACILITATOR OF HIS MISDEEDS AND CAN ONLY CONTRIBUTE TO HIS FUTURE FAILURES NOT ONLY AS A PLAYER BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY AS A HUMAN BEING!!! FOR HIS HIGH SCHOOL COACH TO MAKE A STATEMENT CONCERNING THE FUTURE RECRUITING OF HIS PLAYERS, IS ALSO UNFORTUNATE!!! IF ROBERT MARVE IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE TYPE OF INDIVIDUAL THAT HIS PROGRAM PRODUCES, THEN HE CAN KEEP THEM!!! THESE ARE NOT THE CANES OF THE 80'S AND EARLY 90'S THAT ALTHOUGH SUCCESSFUL, WERE PERCEIVED AS THUGS AND CRIMINALS WHO HAPPENED TO BE GREAT FOOTBALL PLAYERS!!! SHANNON HAS DONE A MASTERFUL JOB AT CHANGING THAT PERCEPTION NATIONALLY, AND ULTIMATELY WILL EMERGE AS A COACH WHO PLAYED NO FAVORITES, CUT NO CORNERS, TURNED NO BLIND EYE, AND BROUGHT RESPECT FROM OPPONENTS, FANS, AND MEDIA ALIKE BY PLAYING THE GAME AND COACHING HIS PLAYERS THE RIGHT WAY!!! HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THESE YOUNG MEN'S LIVES WILL GO FARTHER THAN THOSE OF A FATHER WHO SEES HIS SON AS THE END ALL AND BE ALL OF COLLEGE QUARTERBACKS!!! WAKE UP EUGENE, AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!! YOUR SON'S FAILURES AS A PLAYER AND A TEAMMATE AND A YOUNG MAN, ARE A DIRECT RESULT OF YOUR CLOSING YOUR EYES TO HIS SHORTCOMINGS AND INDISCRETIONS!!!
HIS FAULT, NOT SHANNON'S!
YOUR FAULT, NOT SHANNON'S!
HAVE FUN WATCHING HIM SIT THE BENCH AT FIU!!!

Personally Im a huge Cane fan but Coach Shannon is scared of what Marve will do to Miami in 2013 because thats will Florida plays Miami wouldnt all of the Miami fans be upset if Marve turned out to be the better QB than Harris wouldnt yall be sorry for always bashing him no one can be great when they have to compete with another qb within the season always having to look over their shoulder the same could have been said if Harris was the starter and Marve was the backup that always came in the mess up Harris's rythmn

I watched Marve and Harris all year long and I leaked some of my opinion, but for what it is worth here it is.

Marve can't play.

No.1 - He is not accurate beyond 10+ yards down the field.

No. 2 - He is too short and too small. Marve's size represented the entire team's problem as well.

No. 3 - His arm strength and ability are overrated - If he could not beat out Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman, that should have been our first warning sign. Also, if you can rifle it from 2-10 yards, who cares when you have bad mechanics and no patience to let plays develop?

No. 4 - He is shot - Kind of like Kyle Wright - The hits have affected his ability to stand in the pocket and make throws. He looks at the rush too much.

No. 5 - He needs to grow up. The punching of the mirror was a bad sign. We have all been around kids like that, and what is common is that they don't know how to deal with stress/pressure/conflict if things are not going their way. (His parents and coaches coddled him too much)

Did Shannon make some mistakes? Yes, but we all agree that Harris is a better QB. The problem is that Harris has to get stronger and better too. He needs about 20lbs of muscle on his body - he can do it if he concentrates on his big muscles - Shoulders, back, and legs.

R-DUB. THERE YOU GO. RIGHT ON.
MR DUPREE- VERY PRECISE. I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING.

I KNOW THERE ARE RS HATERS OUT THERE, BUT PLEASE. THIS "HATERADE" AS MANNY IS CALLING IT IS NOT EXCLUSIVE OF UM- LOOK WHAT IS HAPPENING AT ND, MICHIGAN, AT ALBAMA BEFORE SABAN, AT WASHINGTON. HAVE YOUALL READ THOSE BLOGS? THEY RAN LLOYD CARR OUT OF MICHIGAN, AND CHARLIE WEIS IS ABOUT TO BE RUN OUT. BELIEVE ME IT COULD BE WORSE. GIVE RS A YEAR OR TWO OF RECRUITING HIS OWN PLAYERS, AND WE SHALL SEE.

HAVING RECRUITED "TOP" HS PLAYERS, IF WE REMAIN AT 7-6, 8-5, WHATEVER, AND THEREIS NO SIGHT OF A TOP5 RANKING OR ACC CH. WITHIN THE NEXT 2 YEARS, HE'S GONE. BELIEVE ME.

“He went home soon after; other players who were suspended for breaking team rules continued practicing with the team until it departed for San Francisco.”

Marve was never coming back to the UM. He knew it and Randy knew it. Marve knows JH is better and he was going to be on the bench why do you think he was talking with LSU in late NOV and other schools. Because he knew it was over and he felt that he should start based on what?

Was this not the problem with UM the last 6 years players came and expected to be first rounders and starters. You earn the right to be on the field and in watching JH he did everything right for an 18 year old kid. Yes, and he made it to all his classes too so as they say Robert no excuses. Come on JH is stud to handle himself the way he did against duke and uva. Marve throws 1 pas in the wake game and he is a hero JH drives 95 yards on the road in uva and the wins the game in ot. Anyone who thinks Marve could have done the same is crazy.

Marve really did nothing to prove he was an elite QB. Maybe in spread offense he will be better but from what I see is a spoiled brat who knew is job was not going to be there next year. His coaches and dad to say what they are saying is very disgraceful. He had all the opportunity in the world to be the player he thought he was and he simply failed.

Shannon said when he took this job that he was going to be tuff on discipline and only wanted guys dedicated to the U. Does Marve sound like either? Some adversity and he crumpled like a cheap shirt so you think its going to be any different in a game. I wish him good luck but how can anybody say this kid got a raw deal because his coach doesn’t hug him. Lmao! RS is tuff guy and wants tuff players is this not signal to other recruits about what he expects his players to be is nothing but perfect so if you ask me I would rather play for professional then a guy hugging me in the locker after I screw up. These young men will benefit greatly from knowing that when they screw up there is consequence or if you don’t play well somebody will take your spot. Marve missed the boat on that so better that he leaves and get babied somewhere else.

Also look at this kid he was giving everything by the U and his daddy is upset well maybe he shouldn’t have thrown 13 picks and we don’t have this conversation. This is case of sour grapes so let this wussy go.

GO CANES!

I have heard from reliable sources that Marve was not thought of too highly by his teammates. This is the last thing you need on your team, a young WB who for one does not go out there and dominate and then on top of that is not liked by his peers. Marve just doesn't have the intangables needed to lead a team to victory. Sure he is fast, sure he has a great arm but what he doesn't have is instinct, and that is a problem. I wish him the best but he is just not the player you want to build your team around, at least any team I'm a fan of. Either way it doesn't matter if we go with Jacory or Marve as our starting QB, if we don't run the spread with the kind of athletes and weak offensive line that we have we won't be successful period.

Sour grapes???? Sounds right to me! Unless Mr. Marve wants history to show that his career peaked his senior year in high school he'd better get it through his young skull that moving up to the next level necessarily means starting at the bottom (AGAIN), working harder than before, and expecting serious competition. I believe that applies to every field. Good luck to him in his future; UM's is bright with JH under center.

Why should Marve compete and lose another year of eligibilty when Shannon has it in his mind who he is gonna start regardless. Lets see if he gives Taylor Cook or Cannon Smith the kind of time he gave Harris this year or better yet gives them a real shot in the spring to be the starter. I doubt it cause he's too busy bouncing in Harris's sack. It really will not matter much because hopefully we will have only one more year to deal with this baffoon. After that maybe we get a REAL HEAD COACH.

This program is in shambles. Miami is not any better off than it was 3 years ago under Coker. If you believe we are, I have a 5-7 & 7-6 record, 1 low tier bowl loss, plenty of fired coaches, a starting QB transfering to prove it. Big deal, we have a top recruiting class. If we cannot produce results what good is it.

At some point, the blame has to circle back to the top, namely Randy Shannon. So far no results and no improvement from 3 years ago. I am not impressed.

UMMMM---COker left randy with a mess, we have 1 player POSSIBLY being drafted this yr. WITH THAT SAID< to have had a chance to win 12 out of 13 games(GT ONLY BLOWOUT), even close to UF in the 4th, with FRESHMAN, we R on the path back----------U cant expect 11-1 seasons when no one of your upper classmen are NFL players--thats just the way it is. ITs gonna take 4 yrs. we R alot better than we were. Coker won with davis's team, and got worse every yr jack a_s

UMMM WALTER_ Marve will be done with his football carer in 2011. there will be no NFL, and 2011 will be his SR year on the bench at some school , so get your facts straight

Hey Yo...It took Bill Parcels and Tony Sparano to turn the Dolphins around and they had to fire their coach to do it. So unless we can come up w/ Bill Parcels and a Tony Sparano look alike, or at least a guy that can coach, this program will remain in shambles. Randy Shannon has done nothing to convince anyone he is the right person to turn things around.

Posted by: MattInNY | December 30, 2008 at 03:25 PM

THIS IS COLLEGE FOOTBALL---YOU CANT GO OUT AND SIGN FA"s, you have to sign 18 yr old undeveloped high school kids. If you really understood football, you would see that we could barely dress enough kids for games in 07, have maybe 1 person getting drafted, and no depth. Thats why coker was fired. Randy had us in 12 of 13 games with young kids. go look at the schedule ,and in every game in the 4th qtr, but the GT game, we were winning or within 1 score . to have a chance at 12 wins, you can see we R headed in the right direction---NOW, as these kids become JR's, Redshirt Soph's, we win these tight games. Randy just brought in ESPNS #1 rated class in college, and another top 10 coming next month. YOU HAVE TO GIVE COLLEGE KIDS 2 yrs to develop. Learn about football before U bash someone. NO ONE COULD HAVE WON WITH WHAT RANDY INHERITED---_URBAN INHERITED A LOADED UF TEAM WITH NFL TALENT, SABAN INHERITED A LOADED ALA TEAM WITH MANY NFL DRAFTEES, randy inherited maybe bruce johnson getting picked in the 5th round, maybe. So, go learn about football

Shannon was a great DC. Has shown he can recruit and appears to be an excellent role model.
Exceptions are:
Minor league actions after Florida game (non-handshake).
Reported limiting of schools Mauve can xfer to.

Mauve is a high school hero who has demonstrated in a number of ways that he is a spoiled, immature person. I feel Jacory outplayed him in 2008 despite the fact that Mauve had the big opportunity. I hope he grows up and is successful wherever he goes, but I think UM is better with Jacory at QB.

Shannon needs to continue his fine recruiting, altho' it will be hard to top last years. However he does need to get a few rel talented people every year and also repair his OL weaknesses.

Shula would make a great choice as OC and could be in the wings if Shannon doesn't excel and excellence is required at UM.

Lets give Shannon our full support and see what happens in 2009.
