Shannon, Jacory react to Marve suspension

GREENTREE PRACTICE FIELD -- UM coach Randy Shannon confirmed after Thursday's practice what Eugene Marve told us earlier this afternoon -- the Canes' starting quarterback has been suspended for the Emerald Bowl. But what stunned me wasn't that Shannon was short with his answers to reporter's questions to the Robert Marve story. We expected that.

Randy_shannon2What was strange to me was that he didn't seem extremely bothered by the fact the guy he started 11 times this season began his season suspended and will end it suspended for basically failing to what he's supposed to -- go to class and be there on time. "You're always disappointed when a violation of team rules occur," Shannon said after telling reporters the decision to suspend Marve was made Thursday morning. "But you know what, our job is to teach them and they learn from it. He'll bounce back and we'll keep him going.

"It's just a growing pain. He's a redshirt freshman, you got to get guys understanding that it takes certain time with guys. Everybody's not going to come in and do everything that's supposed to be done. It's our job to get them to do it... Our job is to educate the kids when something happens. And that's what my job is to educate them. This university has been very helpful in educating all the student athletes we have on campus and we'll keep doing those type of things."

Shannon said he hasn't heard any rumors about Marve transferring and said he expects him back after the bowl game. As expected, Jacory Harris will be the starter in San Francisco Dec. 27. The mild surprise? His backups will be walk-ons Matt Perrelli and Jake Byrne, the team's current holder and long-snappers. Shannon said he won't let Cannon Smith or Taylor Cook burn their redshirts (both would by playing this late in the season, despite not having played much if at all).

As for what this means for Marve's future, Shannon was asked if being suspended twice would affect his standing going into the quarterback competition (should Marve return) next year. His response, "Spring is Spring. This season is still this season. We're still in 2008. So we got to play this game as 2008. You can't get ahead of yourself. When you get ahead of yourself, that's when you screw up."

Jacory_harris2When asked a similar question in reference to what his second career start and the bowl game means to him, Harris responded a little differently than his coach: "This game right here for me is going to be the start of the 2009 season. It's going to start out like a miniature spring game. We're just going to go out there and show everybody what we have in store for next year."

Harris, who injured his throwing shoulder in the season finale, said right now his goal is "to lead the team to a bowl victory." "That's all I can do," Harris said. "It's unfortunate about the situation that took place. I just got to go out and have a good game and my team will be behind me."

> Don't expect Jacory to be scared about starting. He's looking forward to it. "I think its easier to start a game," Harris said. "Coming off the bench, that's where the pressure comes in. You got to keep the momentum. If your down, you got to come back. If your up, you got to keep them going. And if you don't, people will say why didn't your bring us back? Why didn't you keep the momentum going? I've heard a lot this year about Jacory -- the momentum lacks when he's in the game. I just laugh and have fun."

> Harris said he still hadn't spoken to Marve about what happened because the team hadn't learned about his suspension until practice. But he -- along with others -- inferred they would be calling Marve to make sure he was OK. But most said they were told not to talk about the situation.

> For those of you hearing the complete interviews with coach Shannon and Jacory, visit our audio page.

> I'll keep this short since it's basketball newsy and I know there's a lot smaller of an audience for it. UM forward Jimmy Graham was seen wearing a cast on his right wrist Thursday. But I've been told by UM sports information director Margaret Belch, the injury was not serious. X-rays were negative and Graham supposedly practiced like usual. "He slipped in the shower, but it's not that serious," Belch told me. "From what I've heard he's supposed to play Sunday." UM hosts 25th-ranked Clemson (10-0) in its ACC opener on Sunday. Frank Haith is supposed to address the media Friday afternoon.

> On the recruiting front, I spoke with the father of Jared Wheeler this morning on my drive back from Orlando. He said Shannon and coach Jeff Stoutland are supposed to make an in-home visit tonight to the Wheeler home. Tuesday, the Wheelers hosted Vanderbilt. Jim Wheeler said UM coaches have been telling his son they'd like to try him out first at tackle, but realize "he's a kid that could play anywhere on the line, from guard to center if he had to." As for UM's chances -- they look really good. Wheeler said while Vanderbilt is great and offers many of the same things UM does, the distance seems to be favoring UM. Look for a possible commitment announcement soon.

Some of the posts I've read are mind boggling. PEOPLE this is NOT the NFL, this kids FIRST priority is CLASS, and going to it, and NOT being late. Randy was short with reporters probably because he's disappointed and ticked off at Marve for being in the position he's in, being the QB, you HAVE to set examples YOU have to be a LEADER, and Marves not doing the right things. He's a big boy now, and has to start acting like it. Jeez people, some of your posts are just STUPID. Tranferring? And do what? Sit on the bench at another school, and get discouraged? That's stupid. MAN UP MARVE, apologize to the team, and the coaches, and your teachers, and DON'T let it happen again. That's what a MAN does. Lastly, DON'T read the damn blogs, and listen to the assinine media. GO CANES!!!

No other coach in the nation would suspend his starting QB for a bowl game. I understand that Randy is trying to make a point, but there are other ways to discipline players.

Screw class, let them go if they want. You can't make someone learn if they don't want to and you can't have a clean program and win football games.

What happened to the renegade prgram I used to love?

Marve qualified academically....I don't see the big deal.

ColaCane hit the nail on the head.

K2... that was some funny crap. good call

This is becoming a laughing matter. Lets just wait and see what Marve decides. If he stays, good. If he doesn't, we move on. Thank god JH is loaded with playing time, and talent. Hmm,it's sad how many people were on Shannons case for not letting Marve play a full game. Now we need Jacory...Jacory is more then ready, why is that? Thank you Randy Shannon.

Really? Bobby Bowden suspended Chris Rix for the Sugar Bowl and I remember Troy Smith being suspended for a Bowl game, as well.

How is it possible that so many of you know so little about a sport that you watch so much? I'ts unbelievable.

Everyone take note of this guy. He truly might be the dumbest human being walking the face of the Earth right now.

There are no words to explain this post...absolutely ridiculous.

Marve let himself and the team down, not Shannon. A simple rule, show up for class. He had an excuse but that was for the FIFTH (or more) absence or tardy. If he was sick those days, he would have missed practice and that would have made the sports pages. He was not sick. Kudos to Shannon for having rules and sticking to them. You can't have preferential treatment for "stars" without losing the whole team. Why is Marve the only one suspended for this? I guess everyone else understood the rules. It is a question of character.

This is an academic institution first, not amusement for morons who don't understand anything but being a football "fan".

Hey EReed, just read through the majority of these posts. It's not that unbelievable. People are just flat out stupid.

if you guys really think that think randy is being a punk for this i do remember we had the best linebacker in the country in willie williams some of you may not know becasue he was not on the field but he didn't play because of discplinary reasons he trans to another school that was lax and he said he wished he never left even though he is dominating randy is building a dynasty of how the winning hurricanes use to be not ok we will let you get off because you are the starter like myron rolle said " I'am a STUDENT ATHLETE PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO THROW THE STUDENT FIRST". what marve has to do is take this on the chin and learn from it people say they never seen this happen but you have seen top tier athletes get in brawls stealing drinking, and still play now you want to bash a man for not making it to a bcs game with a bunch of freshman now this man don't get me wrong there were head scratchers that randy and nix did (randy not starting harris) (nix calling a playbook that would be used by a three yr old ) randy wasn't handed they keys to a 08 mustang more so a beat up 63 mustang and we have to rebuild it takes time not in two years you look for a bcs title we jus got sucked up in the hype when we saw them ranked and ppl saying we are back this is the real canes very young but very very talented looking for another good recruiting yr we should improve next yr if we continue with 7-5 or 7-6 records then you talk about the coaching staff

Canesjunkie, YOU are making us ALL look bad. SHUT UP and quit posting STUPIDITY. I'm hoping YOU don't have kids in college, or athletes for that matter. Marves FIRST priority is GOING to class, PERIOD. Then comes the football. If you were his teammate, would you follow someone who flaunts the rules?

It seems like this Marve kid needs a lot of work in the priorities and perspective departments. My wife became pregnant with our twin boys her senior year in College, and still managed to attend EVERY SINGLE CLASS, EVERY SINGLE DAY...OOOOOON TIME!!! NOOOOOO EXCUSES MR.MARVE...NOOOOOO EXCUSES!!!

Marve if you're reading these blogs, LEARN from this, be a MAN, and let your teammates know you messed up, and that you're going to make up for it, and SUPPORT them at the bowl game. Sometimes being a man hurts, but that's what will make you a BETTER person. One that your teammates will follow through the gates of heel.

Hey Just-a-Cane, you've got a special wife there man. You better be taking care of that one, lol. My wife was pregnant while I was in Iraq, and I know where you're coming from.

yea and if ppl really believe this has never happened wow like the other postings look at chris rix bowden suspended sophmore w/r reed for missing classes and the qb from lsu ryan perillux was suspended numerous amounts then finally kicked off the team and he was going to be great for lsu jim tressel did with troy smith and another player smu suspended their record setting qb and a safetyfor cutting classes so don't come and see i never heard of this it just never happened at the program in recent memory ppl use your head do ya'll honestly think college kids don't cut class wow you guys are real naive PLAIN STUPID.

This is the first day in a long time where I am truly embarrassed to be a Miami Hurricane fan. Manny, I respect your work more than anything. I started reading your blog the past couple of months and no one is even close to you when it comes to your knowledge and constant information regarding the Canes. However, it is obvious that you don't like Marve at all. The day that Jacory Harris signed with Miami, Robert Marve was put in a situation not to suceed. I understand that Randy started Marve each game this season. Randy did that because he had to make it seem like he gave Marve a fair chance. Even though Marve started, he was on a tighter rope than Jacory all year. If Marve made a mistake he would usually not play the rest of the game. When Jacory made the same mistake he would stay in. Any qb would rather finish a game than start a game. Marve should of had a chance to play the whole game a few times and see if he could learn from his mistakes throughout the game. He never got that chance. And he did NOT miss that class you idiots, he was late. Last time I checked, an absence is when you are physically never there. He showed up and it was verified where he was. I like how Randy holds them accountable but the rules says four absences and he was only absent 3 times. Speaking of accoutnablity, it's funny how Shannon wants the players to be accountbale for their actions. However, Randy not one time this year has owned up to a mistake and held himself accountable. That is what disgust me the most. I hope Jacory comes in and plays great. All of you Jacory lovers better hope so to, cause you will look like fools if he doesn't. But I dont' blame Marve for wanting to leave, I would want to leave to when it is obvious that the coaches and the fans don't want you here and apprecaite what you bring to the team.

Perhaps the reason for his missing class was that Marve took off in the TARDIS with Rose and Doctor Who to battle the Daleks (undoubtably an Urban Meyer creation).

You never know.

No, I don't have kids in college. If and when I do, I won't need Randy Shannon or anyone else to get them to go to class.

Let's talk about Randy Shannon's first priority...winning football games. Uh, we're in a meaningless bowl and haven't won the ACC yet. Why doesn't he address the lack of disipline on the field and stop trying to be a guidance counselor. If he spent as much time and energy gameplanning as he did trying to keep everyone out of trouble, we might in the Orange Bowl.

I thought we were trying to go back to the roots of the program. Those teams from the 80's didn't have all of these rules and they still managed to win. I don't see these types of policies translating to discipline of the field. I understand trying to keep kids safe, but I don't see what football has to do with academics. If Marve is failing out of school he will be removed by the academic staff, not the football staff.

Look, I'm all for academics and these kids getting educations along the way. However, these are personal matters that should be dealt with by the UM academic staff, the kid and their parents. I don't think it's Randy Shannon job to sanction Marve or anyone else for not attending class. Randy Shannon is a football coach and he should stick to what he knows.

I am so thankful Jacory is starting...He has more poise as a quarterback...I think he has a future in the NFL. I believe if he would have started most if not all the games we would be playing in a BCS bowl. I am a die hard Hurricane fan from Indianapolis, IN. I am sick of "Cane" fans being wishy washy. Jacory is a great "X"'s and "O"'s guy. I don't know any one and I mean anyone that can come of the bench down in the games Jacory was in and make the throws that he has made...I think this kid is one of the bright spots for the Canes and part of the foundation that we need to build on...People will see, he may get a little rattled in the beginning, but fans across that nation will see how much a tremendous athlete this kid is...

Robert Marve makes so many bad reads and throws...He thinks He is Brett Farve and not Robert Marve and if he goes some where us and is successful I don't care because he does not fit our system...The only thing he can do is do a quarter back draw and that gets stuffed from time to time...HE'S HORRIBLE...the thing this kid and his dad needs to do...is sit his but on the bench...like Jermaine Mckenize's dad did allow the system to make him a better person and a better player and may be he can find a role on this offense...unless he can just transfer...and that would be a burden lifted

Just one question, were people getting arrested and getting into trouble with academics when butch was here? NO, and that discipline that he installed to the players did play off in the field, even though he wasnt the coach who we won the title, they were all his players with his mentality. Then you have coker comes in the install ANY DISCIPLINE and the program get worse, and worse and worse, and he leaves he the program in ruins to randy shannon, and randy is doing the same thing that butch did, and it WILL translate to the field, just give it time

I don't think some people understand the ENTIRE picture here. It's a team rule you can't miss class. And if he indeed missed class then he needs to chalk it up like a man as its only going to get tougher. Its tough adjusting to life after high school.

He's got a scholarship at a private university where the tuition was $49,000 this year. He's eating food he doesn't have to pay for, he's living for free, his books and lab fees are taken care of, is it too much to ask a kid to show up to class AND show up to class on time?? If you can't do that, then revert to a non scholarship student, you can miss all the class you want on your parent's dime, wait tables for 30 hours a week and worrying about how you're going to pay for rent and books the next 4 years and oh yeah eat.

With the timetable UM's working with, they don't have time to just play one QB and have a wait and see approach. Harris has gotten more pt in as a true freshman at UM than he would have at any other school and because of that I think he's adjusting well. I like them both, but I'm still not sold on both, I/we need to see more of them play period.

HM, do you know what you're talking about? Marve may have more passing yards, but Harris has the better completion percentage. Harris also has morer TDs and less interceptions. so explain how marve has the better record

Can someone please respond to Randy Shannon always wanting his players to be accountbale for their actions but him never taking any responsibility in games that we lose. It seems he always blamed the players. This thought is just bothering me and I want someone to make a good point against this argument so I can feel better about Randy. I want Randy to suceed here real bad.

I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT A BETTER RECORD... HARRIS HAS ONE MORE WIN DUE TO THE CHARELSTON SOUTHERN GAME, BUT BOTH THE QB'S PLAYED IN ALL OTHER WINS AND LOSES...

I SAID MARVE HAD THE BETTER SEASON, HE WAS PUT IN A FAR WORSE SITUATION THAN HARRIS... MARVE WAS LOOKING OVER HIS SHOULDER ALL SEASON,, WHICH COULD EXPLAIN HIM TAKING THOSE UNNECESSARY RISKS DOWN FIELD....

Manny, I hate to be "nitpicky"(something that UM now knows something about) but I hope you meant that the players implied that they would be calling Marve. I believe it was you who inferred it. There goes my UM education showing itself.

baker, i don't think anyone on this blog really understands the ENTIRE picture. i know i don't. things happen in house that we never hear about. i think there's more to this story than what we're hearing about.

as for RS, Troy, I think he's done an okay job. I can't say he's done a great job by any means, but this team is going somewhere that they weren't going last year - to a bowl game. okay, it's the emerald bowl (kind of a joke), but at least it's somewhere. it does seem like he's put a lot of the blame on the players and the rest of his coaching staff. what he probably should be saying is that he (as a head coach) has as much growing to do as everyone else within the organization. and that's certainly the truth. as a i said above, i don't know all the facts about how he is handling this Marve deal, but some of it does sound a bit questionable. but i have to believe that he's doing the right thing in the end and learning better how to handle these sorts of situations.

everyone on this blog should put themselves in Shannon's shoes for a couple of minutes and just try and think of the way U would handle it. I can't say that I would handle this better than he has, but I think his handling of the media has been suspect. either come out with all the facts or keep it all in house.

now put yourself into Marve's shoes. if he's given the chance to come back and compete for a starting job, I would feel lucky to be given another chance. other coaches may simply say "three strikes and you're out, kid". now it's time to truly learn from your mistakes. they happen, but you must learn! there's a time and a place for questioning and/or not following the rules. this was not one of them.

I'm going to say "I'll bet Robert doesn't miss class next year"

Also can't imagine Chad Pennington with that problem!

I also think this is a bigger problem considering the position being played. A running back, not so much!

chris rix was suspended for oversleeping,
adrian mcpherson was suspended for forging checks,
ryan perriloux was suspended several times,

as far as starting qbs go , MARVE SUCKS.
TEAM MOTTO 2008 " NO EXCUSES".
marve didnt get the memo, he was probably absent that day.

YOU IDIOTS,,, HOW CAN RANDY NOT START MARVE?
MARVE WEIGHS 25 POUNDS MORE THAN JACORY. MARVE HAS FUTURE POTENTIAL, AND WEIGHS MORE THAN JACORY.

BESIDES IF JACORY PLAYS THE WHOLE GAME WE MIGHT SCORE POINTS IN THE FIRST HALF, AND YOU KNOW ,MARVE MAN DONT PLAY THAT.. THEY CALL HIM 3nOUT marve.

PEOPLE SAYING START HARRIS ARE MORONS,, CANT THEY SEE HOW MUCH MARVE WEIGHS.

MARVE HAS EXCUSES, GOOD ONES, .

HE SHOULDNT HAVE TO GO TO CLASS BECAUSE HE OUTWEIGHS HARRIS BY 25 POUNDS

What? Is this your attempt at humor? That's not even remotely funny. God, I hate this guy.

I hate that we lost Lowery too but he probably wanted to play with his brother in the end and maybe he doesn't want to play in a rotation system like miami's. Recruiting always seems to fall like that. We lose out on a kid like Lowery and then we end up with a prize recruit falling into our lap (I thought Frank Gore was going to go to Ole Miss but ended up @ Miami). Either way on the Marve situation, I doubt that either Harris or Marve would stay 4 years here anyway so if this would be the last straw would you reallly cry spilled milk ? Hey let Highsmith come in here and play QB. He has to be doing something right if he put his team in the championship game in Texas.

STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR MARVE.
AND LETS BACK OUR NEW STARTING QB JACORY HARRIS.
GOOD LUCK JACORY , STOMP CAL.

Do you guys really think this is a big deal?

First, lets face it-this is not a crucial game for the teams' future. Its a relatively meaningless bowl game.

Second, now Jacory gets to have all the reps in practice, and play the entire game against a legitimate opponent. We'll get a chance to see what he's got-for better or for worse. Marve had 11 chances to start and stake his claim-we have a pretty good idea where he is.

Obviously, one of these guys needs to win the job for the team to maximize next season. This game can go a long way to helping the staff make that choice.

BTW, I know Bryce and Lamar get all the pub, but I think Mike James will surprise everyone. I've seen him play live twice. He's a tough inside runner and quick in space, and he's got a non-stop motor. He even does a decent job in pass protection. If we keep all 3 of these recruits, we are set at RB for a long time.

Antwan Lowery to Rutgers. The fence around the state of Miami is a little more porous than last year. I would say that I hope we meet Rutgers in the next few years if it didn't mean going to a lame bowl game. I'd like to crush them for always trying to some to S. Fla. for their recruits. I would do the same thing, but its annoying when everyone's hands are in the cookie jar. We let too many talented players leave Florida this year. We didn't even recruit Eugene Smith?? Are you kidding me?

Posted by: LAcanefan | December 19, 2008 at 12:39 AM

JACORY and MARVE are Freshman, why would Smith Come here? sit for 3-4 yrs? plus taylor cook an espn 150 qb is redshirting . He had too much depth here.

2nd. Lowery left due to his brother playing at Rutgers, he wanted to play with Rutgers. We will be fine with recruiting, Northwestern plays seminole with the 3 kids randy needs to land. dye dubose and armstrong. add those 3 and we are a top 5

3rd, MARVE MISSED 3 other classes--theres only usually 2 per week anyway, so he missed prob 1/4 of the classes in the semester knowing the U has a person come in every football players class 5 minutes after role to see if there in. Thats just stupidity,. Plain stupidity, ---if it was another player, would this be dragged around???
Get over it. and, jacory has done pretty good so get off his back. With JH in control the entire game, THE U wins, 28-17

can someone provide a link to all these statements about which and how many classes marve missed? or is this all bs gossip?

Having Nix is like being on probation.

Shannon is just using his players to hide the fact that he is a sorry coach. Marve screwed up, but there are other ways to punish someone,Shannon doesn't have his priorities in order. His job is to win football games.I hope he feels real good about Marve going to class when he's sitting on his couch watching the U from home. I think he needs to go back to defense, and Nix needs to coach pee wee football. Who in the hell thought of the idea of switching the two QBs. Let Marve stay in the game and get his rhythm. Shannon recruited the kid so he should let him play. He's got talent, and he needs to be able to play in the bowl game, because he is the reason that they are there.

I dony understand if he had a letter whats the problem. I like JH and RM and i hope both stay. I think that its something special about both QBs. STAY Robert

I'M WITH YOU! GET RID OF THE COACHING STAFF!!!!!

This hole Marve situation is Randy's excuse of having an inept OC. Also for that stupid two QB system that doesn't work. He wants to save Nix's job, but he is putting his own on the line.

All this is Randy's harvest.

Randy Shannon needs to understand that his players are a direct reflection of his own judge of character. Robert Marve would be a great QB under the right coaching staff. If Marve does leave I hope he goes to a ACC school so he can kick Randy Shannon's Axx! I hate to say it, but Randy has created this mess, and he has no one to blame but his self Let Marve play in the bowl game!

ROBERT MARVE SUCKS, HARRIS IS THE MAN...

MARVE 9 TDS 13 PICKS 1300 YARDS IN 80 DRIVES
HARRIS 10 TDS 6 PICKS 1000 YARDS IN 40 DRIVES
MARVE 2 GAMES SUSPENDED
HARRIS 0 GAMES SUSPENDED

HALF THE DRIVES OF MARVE, AND MUCH BETTER PRODUCTION. AND JACORY NEVER HAD A START TO GET IN (RYTHME)THE WHOLE GAME, THOSE STATS WERE FRESH OFF THE BENCH.
MORE IMPORTANT YOUR QB SHOULDNT EVER MISS A GAME BECAUSE HES SUSPENDED..

HUGE DIFFERENCE
MARVE WILL TRANSFER IF HES NOT ASSURED THE STARTING SPOT.
HARRIS SAT THE BENCH AND WAITED FOR HIS # TO BE CALLED.

STOP SAYING MARVE IS A GOOD QB, HE FKN SUCKS.
ROBERT MARVE JR IS NOT A GREAT QB, HES NOT GONNA GO SOMEWHERE AND BE GREAT. NIX CALLS PLAYS ,ROBERT EXECUTES THEM. ITS NOT NIX FAULT MARVE CANT KEEP DRIVES GOING WITH HIS ERRATIC PLAY AND CONSTANT TURNOVERS. IN THE LAST 8 GAMES MARVE THREW 4 TDS TO 12 PICKS AND WE STILL WON 5 OF THOSE GAMES. IF WE CAN WIN WITH HIS BAD DESCISIONS THEN THAT TELLS ME OUR TEAM ISNT THAT BAD . WE JUST NEED A BETTER DESCISION MAKER.

MARVE 9 TDS 13 PICKS 1300 YARDS IN 80 DRIVES
HARRIS 10 TDS 6 PICKS 1000 YARDS IN 40 DRIVES
MARVE 2 GAMES SUSPENDED

honestly, i think marve has more potential and skill than harris, but harris has the calm demeanor and leadership qualities that we truly have been lacking since 2002

WELL SAID BOB,, FUTURE POTENTIAL SHOULD BE USED IN THE FUTURE. HARRIS 2009

No more QB controversy..
