The Hot Stove: Marve, Bryce and recruiting

There's never a time of year quite like that little gap when the football regular season ends and the bowl game takes place. At The U, that time was usually reserved for rumors of who might decide to leave school early for the NFL or who might be leaving a coaching job here for a better one somewhere else. These days it's a little different.

Among the many rumors heard around The U this week: Robert Marve is disgruntled and leaving the program; highly-touted recruit Bryce Brown isn't coming to UM anymore; Patrick Nix is getting fired; Jack McClinton is going to play the part of Rick James in a movie; and the reason I didn't get into that club last weekend in Louisville was because I can't wear skinny jeans. In search of some truth, I spent the past three nights talking to folks in and around this program to try and provide you with what I believe is behind all of this internet, hearsay madness. And so far, the only rumor I can confirm with 100 percent certainty is the last one. I didn't get into that club because of my baggy jeans.

But as for the rest, here is what I'm hearing...

> It's on good word the parents of quarterback Robert Marve had some sort of a meeting with Randy Shannon before the coach flew to San Francisco for some bowl festivities Robert_marve2Wednesday. From what I gathered, Marve's future at Miami remains unclear. It's unknown exactly what was discussed. But the fact remains he started 11 games this season. As one person told me, "He had a chance to put a stranglehold on the position with 11 starts and he didn't." My guess is his family wants what's best for their son. And there's nothing wrong with that. After all, this could all be about nothing serious. But I've been told family-coach meetings are rare during the season. That should show you how important the issue is for both sides. Don't look for any public statements on this until the issue is resolved.

Meanwhile, if Marve does leave as the hot rumor suggests, he's been tied to USF, LSU and UF on internet message boards and blogs. Here's what makes sense to me. If he does decide to leave, don't expect him to be granted a release to USF. Miami plays USF, after that newly signed deal, many times over the next few years. And the Canes don't usually allow players to transfer to future opponents.

> While Marve's future at UM is unclear, one thing is certain: he has not been is suspended for violating any team rules. In fact, no player at UM has been suspended for breaking any team rules (as of right now). We will find out next Wednesday, however, if someone failed to meet the academic requirements to remain eligible for the Emerald Bowl on Dec. 27.

> As for Miami's other quarterback, Jacory Harris, I don't expect him to be going Jacory_harris2_2anywhere regardless of whether or not Marve transfers after the bowl game. Harris, I'm told, is extremely happy at Miami. While Jacory's parents are expected to request a meeting after the season with Shannon to talk about their son (much the same way as Marve), no one should think Harris wants out. The family loves being close to their son and do not want to have to drive far to watch their son play. In fact, even though at first they thought the two QB system might not work, they were pleasantly surprised it did. Just don't take that to mean they'll be happy with it being in place moving forward.

Jermaine_mckenzie> From what I hear, expect a handful of players -- especially running backs who hardly played and tight ends and linemen who never play -- to be transferring to new schools after the bowl game (just like last year). One guy who I don't expect to leave is receiver Jermaine McKenzie. His father told me Monday night Jermaine is finally healthy (100 percent) and they expect him to compete at a higher level this spring. While Jermaine was frustrated he didn't catch a pass this season, I'm told he believes in the coaches, who keep urging him to compete.

> As for highly-touted running back Bryce Brown, who told Scout.com last week he was no longer planning on enrolling at UM in January, the Canes are still very confidentBryce_brownthey'll land the blue-chipper from Kansas. Brown has been busy taking official visits to Clemson, Missouri and Oregon. He still has another trip scheduled to Purdue and his final trip to Miami. But the word is Oregon is the only team that really might be able to sway Brown away from the Canes. Bryce said in a candid video interview with Scout he loved the feel at Oregon. I just don't expect it to be strong enough to pull him away from UM in the end and neither do the Hurricanes' brass who believe his relationship with Arthur Brown will prevail.

> Plantation cornerback and UM commitment Brandon McGee and I spoke for about 15 minutes regarding Brown, who will be his teammate at the U.S. Army All-American game next month in San Antonio. This is what McGee told me: "It kind of threw me off that he's not coming early anymore. But I still think he's going to be a Cane. We talk on the phone and he tells me how he's working on getting some linemen to come here. I'd be really surprised if he changed his mind."

> McGee, who said he will begin his career at UM as a cornerback, will begin classes at UM on Jan. 20 and is expecting to room with running back Mike James. He said he's been busy working out since his season ended three weeks ago. Lately, he's been busy trying to Browmcgeerecruit for the Canes, chatting it up with receiver Andre DeBose (one of the Sanford trio). This weekend, McGee will celebrate his birthday by taking an official visit with fellow commitments James, tight end Billy Sanders, tight end Stephen Plein, defensive end Olivier Vernon and defensive lineman Curtis Porter. The plan is to help try and create a family feel with the big guys who will also be visiting this weekend -- offensive linemen Bobby Massie, Daniel Campbell and Jermaine Johnson. "We're definitely trying to get some of those big men to commit," McGee said. "Coach Stoutland told us he needs an assist."

Good move Manny...

Manny...good talking to you and glad things are straightened out. Now U know that was NOT me. Take care and see you around.

GO CANES!!!

Manny will u be doing podcast with Larry Bluestin about the UM during the off season like last year.

Manny, switch gears to basketball, John Wall update??? Also, did you see WV vs Davidson last night. Deven Ebanks looked pretty freekin' good. Shame UM let that one slip.

Losing Bryce Brown would be a disaster. I have been looking forward to him putting on the Green and Orange ever since he followed Arthur and committed.

As reference to above: Ebanks was real impressive last night. I love watching Stephen Curry though. I hope McGee and the crew can show these OL a good time this weekend. That'd be huge to get one of them. Andre DeBose would be huge if somehow The U can get him. Imagine him and Aldarius Johnson in the receiving corps together. Not to mention Benjamin and the other freshman that contributed this year.

Great info Manny!

Great blog Mandingo. Always good to get news from a solid source. I really hope Marve stays. I think he and Jacory both have the potential to be special

Lets get them Canes!!! I think last year Jordan Futch and Jacory Harris was taking the initiative to bring in a strong recruiting class, now McGee. This is leadership in the making.

Now to Marve and his parents. Don't transfer!!! Compettiton is what makes these players. If he transfers Marve will have to sit out a year anyway. And at LSU they have the young qb in Jefferson and lets not forget Russell Shepherd coming in. UF have about 100 4 star qb's. Marve stay!!! competition is what makes great players.

If the situation is the way Manny explained it -- let him transfer. All players need competition to become better players. It seems like Marve and his parents are under the notion that if Marve isn't handed the keys full time next year than he is gone! If he is expect things to be given to him, he better go to FAU/FIU and stand clear of UF/LSU of the world. Unlike UM, those teams have actually been recruiting top nothc QBs the pass four years. The competition there will be ten times more brutal than it is over here.

I hope I am wrong, but he sounds like a spoilled kid who wants everything handed to him. Hard work young man. You had 11 games to show what you were made of, and you didn't.

Hey Manny, ESPN's Inside the U mentioned Lamarcus Joyner from Southwest High having a new leader. Do you know if canes have a real chance with him?

who was it last week who compared marve to colt mccoy. i just read that and couldnt stop laughing. mccoy 2500 yards 68%passing , 29 tds to 7 picks his first year as a starter and a 10-3 record.
marve had 9 tds 13 ints, 1293 yards and 54%..
and a 6-5 record as a starter.

"Whoever it was that said Marve reminds them of a mixture of Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman knows absolutely nothing about football. And do you remember Colt McCoy his redshirt freshmen year at Texas? He made the same mistakes as Marve and they are similar talents and where is Colt McCoy now??"

Posted by: Troy | December 05, 2008 at 10:29 AM

"U ARE SO WRONG.... MARVE HAS EVEN MORE POTENTIAL THAN COLT MCCOY... THIS WAS MARVE'S FIRST YEAR!!!... MCCOY NUMBERS AS A FRESHMAN WERE NOT GOOD... FOR THE LAST TIME I HOPE; IT TAKES TIME TO DEVELOP TALENT... PATIENCE CANE NATION"

(Herbal MInded aka HM and Troy) should be banned from posting on here for failure to check the stats and just plain football ignorance.

here is a production comparison between harris and marve. i compiled this before the nc state game. i broke down the play by play for the season and credited each qb's production for the drives they directed.

marve had 82 drives
marve directed 14 touchdowns and 11 field goals
37 punts (27- 3n Outs) and 11 interceptions

harris had 42 drives
harris directed 16 touchdowns and 6 field goals
16 punts (12- 3n Outs) and 4 interceptions

marve led the team to scores on 30% of his drives.
harris scored on 56% of his drives.

marve truly is comparable to kirby freeman and kyle wright. marve settles for fg's and harris finishes off drives with td's.

HARRIS IS THE FUTURE .
MARVE SHOULD BE THE PAST.

THEY SHOULD LET MARVE GO TO USF , SO WE CAN BOOST OUR DEFENSIVE STATS WITH INT'S. PLAYIN MARVE NEXT YEAR COULD DOUBLE OUR INT'S FROM 3 TO 6.
GO CANES ,
HAD JACORY STARTED ALL OUR GAMES WE WOULD BE 10-3 ACC CHAMPS AND PLAYING IN THE ORANGE BOWL.

MAYBE OUR DEFENSE WOULD LOOK BETTER IF MARVE DIDNT GO 3-N-OUT THE 1ST FOUR DRIVES EVERY GAME.
SINCE THE 3RD QUARTER OF THE TARHEEL GAME MARVE HAS THROWN 4 TD'S AND 12 PICKS. HE HOLDS THE BALL TO LONG AND LETS THE PLAY BREAK DOWN THEN SCRAMBLES FOR A SHORT GAIN OR TURNS THE BALL OVER. HE ALSO THROWS THE BALL TOO HARD WHEN IT'S NOT NEEDED (LACK OF TOUCH). HE KEYS ONE GUY AND LETS THE PLAY BREAK DOWN AND MAKES THE O-LINE LOOK BAD.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HARRIS GO "SHOTGUN, NO HUDDLE" 4 AND 5 WIDE ALL GAME CHANGING THOSE RECEIVERS OUT AND WEARING DOWN THE DEFENSE.

MARVE-PASSING STATS- 1293 YARDS, 9 TD'S, 13 INT'S, 54% COMP. (107.19) PASSER RATING.
RUSHING STATS- 59 CARRIES-119 YARDS- 2 TD'S, 2.0 YPC.
6 WINS 5 LOSSES AS STARTER.

HARRIS PASSING STATS- 1001 YARDS, 10 TD'S, 6 INT'S. 61% COMP. (129.46)PASSER RATING
RUSHING STATS- 40 CARRIES-108 YARDS- 2 TD'S,
2.7 YPC.
1-0 AS A STARTER

MARVE RANKS LAST AMONG STARTING QBS IN THE ACC IN PASSING EFFICIENCY . HARRIS RANKS 2ND BEHIND WILSON WITH A (129.46)RATING.

WHAT IF HARRIS HAD 80 DRIVES AND MARVE ONLY HAD 40 DRIVES. WHAT WOULD HARRIS STATS BE? WHAT WOULD OUR RECORD BE? MARVE HAS TWICE AS MANY DRIVES ON THE SEASON AS HARRIS DOES. YET THE ONLY THING HE LEADS HIM IN IS INT'S AND SLIGHTY IN YARDS. I REALLY HOPE HE LEAVES , RANDY WILL LOOK LIKE A COACHING GENIUS NEXT YEAR WITH JACORY STARTING.

Don't look for any public statements on this until the issue is resolved.

3 days ? there U go

(as of right now).

unnnhhh , quueeeee , errrrrrr ,

E11523

Ewbanks is a talent. We didn't let him slip away. His mom was afraid of big bad Miami she wouldn't let him come

LET THE STATS SPEAK FOR HARRIS.
AND MCCOY HAD A GREAT FRESHMAN YEAR PLEASE DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GO SPOUTING YOUR MOUTH OFF LIKE YOU KNOW SOMETHING. (HM AND TROY). YOU GUYS JUST DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ANYTHING. ITS HARD TO HAVE A DISCUSSION WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE SO UNINFORMED.

HM-YOU SHOULD BE BANNED FOR YOUR IGNORANCE

We all saw this year that this team will never be a National Title contender with Marve. He can't check down and takes off at the first sign of pressure-- in what way other than speed is he any different than Kyle Wright?

Jacory is the real deal. If he gets hurt, we're screwed anyway, so why does it matter if Cannon Smith replaces him instead of Marve?

NIX ISNT AS BAD AS MARVE MAKES HIM LOOK, NOR IS THE O-LINE.
RANDY SHANNON IS A GOOD COACH AND I BELIEVE HE IS CAPABLE OF LEADING THIS TEAM. THAT BEING SAID. HE DID A HORRIBLE JOB THIS YEAR, HOW CAN HE SAY ALL JOBS ARE WIDE OPEN COMPETITION ALL YEAR, EXCEPT THE THE QB POSITION. I THINK BEING A MAN OF YOUR WORD IS AN ADMIRAL QUALITY FOR A MAN. BUT LETTING THE WHOLE TEAM SUFFER FOR 1 MAN WAS POOR LEADERSHIP. NOT TO MENTION WHAT DOES THAT SAY TO THE REST OF THE TEAM. NOBODY'S JOB IS SAFE EXCEPT MARVE. WHY IS HE SO SPECIAL? WHY DO HIS PARENTS GET MEET SHANNON DURING THE SEASON? WHY DOES HE GET SPECIAL ATTENTION AND JOB SECURITY FOR POOR PLAY?
?

GOOD POINT JOE

If Marve doesn't like the competition, let him get the heck out of the U!

One of the best quotes I've seen on this blog in a long time was this one, "He had a chance to put a stranglehold on the position with 11 starts and he didn't." That's 100% right!!

I think he and his family are acting like whiny chicks. I think they see the writing on the wall. They know that Jacory outplayed, outperformed, and outshined Marve with far fewer opportunities this year. And they know the fans see it. And the media sees it. And nobody is shy about expressing it. It's not just the 'eyeball test' which I've been writing about on this blog for months- it's also obvious in terms of statistics.

Marve and his parents are nervous and maybe are demanding an assurance right now from Shannon that Marve start from here on in... because I think they know that if he doesn't leave UM beforehand, he is NOT going to retain the starting job once the new QB is named the Tuesday before next season's first game. Marve will thus lose another year of playing time.

What they're saying makes sense from their perspective, but they're still coming across like the whiny chicks I've dated.

To Robert Marve: I hope you don't leave, b/c you definately have your upside. But if you're gonna make this punk move now- insisting on a guarantee and whining- then good riddance. Heading into next season, you are not the 'no-doubt-about-it starter,' and you have nobody to blame but yourself.

Shannon should let Jacory Harris start the next few years and we'll ride him very far!

By the way, fellas: Bryce Brown is NOT going to go to Oregon.

Don't you remember going through this last year with Jacory Harris? He was supposed to be a "lock" to come to UM, but then he went to visit Oregon and supposedly fell in love with the place.

(by the way- what in the world are they showing these guys on recruiting trips!? The chicks in Oregon really aren't very hot... I've seen 'em.. and so many of them are nasty granola types.. they nasty kinds who don't shave their armpits.. or down below...)

Like Jacory Harris, Bryce Brown will be a Cane.

Canethang: great points!

Why are all positions wide-open all season long except for QB? When it was obvious that Marve wasn't as good as Harris- he should have been replaced for the rest of the season... just like Shannon did with other starters at other positions.

I've been yelling about this all season, and for the last few weeks on this blog.

Shannon was so unfair for pulling Jacory as starter after the first game of the season. He had long promoted a rule that a starter will lose his starting position should he miss a game for any reason (injury, suspension, etc) and have to re-earn it.

Well- Shannon broke his own 'sacred' rule in Week 2.

Again- why the heck is Marve treated so special?

Fellas:

We averaged about 28 points on offense per game this season.

Is there anybody who doesn't think we would have averaged about 35 points per game had Jacory played as much as Marve?

That's only one little touchdown more.. but it would have helped us so much! Both statistically and on the field...

Do you guys think it's a stretch to say that we might have averaged 38 points a game with Jacory starting? I think that's quite possible!! That would be only one more TD and one more FG per game.

Anybody who actually saw the games, saw the way the offense responds to him, knows Jacory could have done it!!

Thanks Shannon- for throwing away a good part of the season, and for flushing tons of points down the toilet... so that you could stick to your 'word!'

BTW- we should all be glad that a few lousy players might transfer. They are just taking up space.. scholarships spots of new players.

To Lee Chambers, Shawnbrey McNeal, Ian Symonette, etc: We appreciate your efforts and contributions to the UM program- but you're obviously not good enough to make it here. We already know what you've 'got,' and it's not enough. So UM will be better served by bringing in new players to fill those scholarships- new guys who might perform better than you. You're gonna be on the bench for the rest of your time here, and aren't going to contribute anyway.

In short- we have nothing to lose by letting them go and replacing them with new guys. If those transferring never were going to play- we truly have nothing to lose.

Manny:

I am a die hard 'Cane fan. I notice the team has a lot of talent (not yet at the level of some past teams, but still alot). What they don't seem to have-particularly on defense-is the "dog" mentality. The meanness. The identity of the team should flow from the coaches, and looking at coach Shannon (who I believe in, by the way), he doesn't seem to exude "meanness". There have been several players from past years who led the team and made sure they were "mean" (see Warren Sap, Ken Dorsey, and even Ed Reed's locker room speech). Do you agree? Do you see any players/coaches on the team who may step up and fill this role?

Last post for now.. gotta work!

If we had Jacory start all season long, we would have scored an average of 35-38 points, instead of the 28 we posted (see my post above). We would have won more games. The defense wouldn't have been so winded at the end of games. The other teams would have been forced to abandon their gameplans earlier. And our whole strategy would be better as we wouldn't always be entering halftime with 7 or 10 points.

I know some of Nix's playcalling SUCKED- and I will never forgive him for throwing from the shotgun on 4th and 1's.. - but wouldn't Nix have looked SOOOO much better had Jacory been leading the offense?

At 35-38 points a game on offense, Nix would have looked pretty good. And we'd be somewhat upset that he'd consider leaving the U.

Maybe we should keep Nix, just for the sake of consistency and not causing upheaval, and let Jacory play 90% of the snaps next year. Even if nothing else improves on offense (ex. running backs don't find more holes, O-line still is so-so, receivers drop passes at the same rate), we'd still have the best offense in the ACC.

PERSONA NON GRATA

Guys...
This is a learning year for everyone,... Randy, Pat, Bill, Assistants, QB's and Team. It's not like the coaches had continuity with 6/7 years experience in developing a game plan format of working together. Great defenses and Offenses take time to develop, where the senior and juniors know the system from their growth as a freshman... working their way up the chain.

Historians should call this "The Great Year of Transformation"... Hell, just look at the transformation from senior and junior players to recruits taking over. Game by game, we saw, as many as, 18 recruits playing... with new Offense and Defense packages!!! What do you expect... Perfection?

Now look at the QB's... Marve and Harris didn't have the Juniors and Senior to look up to and to grow by... What I call fresh meat in a make shift offensive package

Nix's new packages were limited to basic and repeated plays with the exception of a few wild cats. The OL was porous at times giving both QB's only 2 seconds to complete a pass when the play calls for 3 seconds. Our power running plays were limited because JJ was hurt half the time, which put all the pressure on passing.

Now throw in Nix's conservative Red Zone plays, with Coop up the middle... Love ya Coop but your a better outside runner.

Defenses were reading our keys and blitzing by the 3rd game and by the 10th game, forget about it! GT and NCSt knew exactly what we were running and the key word was pressure the QB's and look for interceptions!

Do I like Marve and Jacory?... Your damn right I do.
Do both need improving?... Absolutely.

Marve... Check off receivers, more arch, check ball speed but has great athletic ability and should ask Nix to roll out more to see the field. and it forces option to 2nd and 3rd receivers!

Harris... Weight, More zip on the ball, has tendency to loft the ball rather then place the ball but a great field general and ask Nix to check off and change plays on the line.

CanesThang... impressive collection of Stats but stats don't tell the whole story... Both QB's are very good and we would be crazy to let either one go but Nix must find a way to develop each one to his own great potential. To be honest, Nix should have already be on this 5 games ago but maybe he's to busy figuring out what play to run on 4th and one.

Manny... Thanks for the up-date... keep it hot!!!

I agree with the majority of u about Marve and Harris. The O definately had better flow with Harris. Marve made more plays with his runs than throws this year. Harris single handidly won the UVA game. He deserves more playing time. Reality is the canes need a lot of help to get better. They need to get bigger and stronger at d-line and linebacker. The defense really struggled when they played an above average offense. They only playmaker I saw on the D was Spense. They need a lot more. The 2008 team was better but that is not saying much because the 2007 squad was pathetic, especially on offense. I was at the BC game in 2007 and it was tough to watch the offense. I think Shannon has the team in the right direction. Next year is critical if he wants to keep his job.

Manny (and now Andre) from the MH, Shandel from the SS, and Chris from ITU and I all talk behind the scenes via emails.
We follow the strictest rules of confidentiality. We are good at keeping secrets. Sure, I will say I talk to them, but I will NOT say what we talk about unless they give approval.
Those guys are all close, I'm on the outside looking in because of media credentials. But C_________ would not be where it is today without them.
And some day soon, hopefully very soon, I'll be in the "club" and then well U know...

this meeting with the parents, doesnt this sound vaguely familar to the Arkansas situation a few years ago. Parents didnt like how their kid was being treated even though the team won 9 games and their kid started 4 of those games as a true freshmen. You know how that turned out; both the head coach and the QB were gone within two years. Mitch Mustain is riding pine at USC and Coach Nutt is down at OLE Miss. Heed this as a warning to both parties.
