Bill Young bolts for Oklahoma State

The Miami Hurricanes are looking for a defensive coordinator -- again. As expected, Bill Young has left the program to join his alma mater Oklahoma State, the school's website announced moments ago. Young, 62, wasn't answering his phone Tuesday. Now, we know why. He was on his way to join the Cowboys.

Bill Young Young played defensive end and linebacker for OSU from 1965 to 1967. So, it's understandable why he left. And although there is a strong belief he might have bolted for what was reported as a $700,000 annual paycheck I was told that number was a little high. I was also told by a UM source Young was the second highest paid defensive coordinator in the ACC.

I know I was supposed to have a live chat with you today at 2 p.m., but I've been swamped following this story, the men's basketball team and more. I'll get to your questions by the end of the night and apologize for not getting to them earlier.

As for recruiting, don't expect Young's departure to affect it much, if at all. While opposing programs may try to paint a picture of instability, Young was hardly involved in the recruiting process with kids at all. In fact, I spoke to cornerback Prince Kent moments ago who told me he hadn't even met Young or spoken to him before. Kent will be one of four commitments and 10 recruits visiting UM this coming weekend.

"I'm for whatever coach Shannon does," Kent said. "I know he's going to lead our team in the right direction, no matter what's going on. He's going to keep the team focused. He's setting high goals and he knows what this team is capable of. I'm sure coach Young was a good guy. But he's not why I wanted to come to UM."

FIRST!!!

Bring on Willie Martinez. He's currently Georgia's DC, a Cane Alum, and is from Miami. He's also a sick recruiter.

Thanks Manny!

geez welp its aiight. i thought i'd be really torn up by this but its ok. it probly wont affect recruiting so much.

Damn.... This off-season is the total opposite of what we had last year... But all is not lost. Randy is no stranger to adversity and UM's administration knew adversity was on its way when they promoted him to HC.

Shannon's D won an NC in 2001 and was a bad call away from winning another one in 2002, so getting him involved as DC is not a bad thing and is the affordable way out of this mess. Sure, he has a lot on his plate already, but realistically, what other options do we have? If anything, this frees up funds for a high-powered OC.

WE NEED TO RALLY AROUND SHANNON NOW!!!! THIS IS HIS DARKEST HOUR!!! HE'S A TRUE CANE!!!

FUKC YOUNG!!!

LET'S GO CANES!!!

but i really hope we get a guy thats as solid as he was*

TUBERVILLE

What recruits are enrolling this week?

Now we shall see who are the TRUE Canes here!

A few thoughts:
1. At age 62 yo, I'm not sure how long Bill Young was going to be coaching anyways. Wouldn't you like to have a coach in his late thirties to early forties anyways.
2. We liked Bill Young's defense in particular not just Bill Young the man. We have his defensive playbook . Thus although he leaves, his defensive philosophy and strategy stays . His defensive style doesn't have to leave Coral gables. We know the plays. Execution and timimg being called by the right replacement coordinator would make replacing him that much easier.
3. Football players win the game by making the tackles, making the right reads and hanging in their tough. As fans, players, and remaining coaches lets buckle up our chins straps and keep this loss under perspective.

yeah if tuberville is good at defense, i think we should try for him. getting your DC raided sucks. I dont think we should do that to someone else. but tommy's nowhere right now.

Seriously?!?! oklahoma state? THIS is the sad state of da U. I'm SICK of it!!! apparently, i'm a man, i'm 40 is better than Shannon. pathetic. we need to dump this loser and get a real coach that doesnt alienate everyone. lest we forget, COKER WAS FIRED FOR GOING 7-6!!! he also didnt play a FCS team that year!! yea sure, coker recruited poorly . . i dont buy it. wasnt shannon ON THE STAFF!!! apparently he is a great recruiter.

12-13 in 2 years is unfathomable at da U. no way, no how should we put up with this. Its embarrassing!! we have no OC or DC presently . . how will that affect recruiting?? NEGATIVELY. Bryce Brown is wavering now. Its freakin embarrassing to be a fan now . . freakin embarrassing. Shannon is bumbling around like Wade Phillips . . all this talent, no results!! its just plain sickening.

No Willie Martinez. he is terrible. We can do better.

Randy = HC and DC = $$$$$$$$$$$ = top notch OC

Hurts from a stability standpoint, however, it may turn out to be a positive. Consider if RS brings on a well respected OC then a respected DC from another school who IS involved in recruiting. Who says that additional recruits wont follow that were NOT looking at UM previously?

I heard Coach Shannon already had Willie Martinez in mind when Young went to Stillwater over the weekend. The defense will be alright, we just need the right OC to put it all together.

Good luck Bill!!!

Bring back Greg McMackin. Mid 90's defenses we crazy good thanks to him. Hawaii can't be that great. LOL

It's like the rats are trying to flee from the ship before it sinks. What does anyone think of Miami bringing in John Gruden as the next coach after Randy is fired next season?

Gruden is going to South Bend after they fire Weis next year, so scratch that one.

But Jesse, is this why Mullen left UF? Hmmmm....

OC fired, and DC leaves for a life time oppertunity, and the ship is sinking???

5-7 < 7-6. Looks like the ship is rising to me.

whats embarassing is having you "paul" as a fellow canes fan... you sound like a whiny little girl that just got her barbie doll taken... stop crying... Bryce Brown has to do whats best for him...you didn't put in the hard work that it takes to reach the level he has to get where he most likely will go... THE NFL.. Bryce do whats best for you, hopefully we can put the pieces of the puzzle together to win a NC... hopefully you are part of that equation...we as canes fans need to be behind this team no matter what..the good.. the bad...NOW STOP YOUR SNIVELING, HERE'S YOUR BARBIE BACK!!!

Nice basicmath!!

I say, pay more for a Great OC, so that Shannon feels comfortable and doesn't have to manage the offense. Then you let Shannon call the Defense- make Barrow or Hurt Co-Defensive Coordinator (for grooming purposes).

At least we know the Defense will be able to stop people if Shannon is directly involved, and the Offense will only need to score 20pts to win most games.

Got this from Yahoo sports:

UM's Shannon to finish interviews

Miami coach Randy Shannon likely will wrap up his interviews for an offensive coordinator at the Senior Bowl this week.

It is believed he wants a coach with NFL experience who will emphasize the running game. Former Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer is among the candidates, as is Philadelphia Eagles offensive assistant Mark Whipple.

A few college coaches remain in the mix, including former San Diego State coach Chuck Long and former Kansas State boss Ron Prince. Prince also could end up with an NFL job. A possible destination: the Kansas City Chiefs.

Paul M you sound like a girl for real sir. Coker got fired because he went from having the best college team ever handed to him to reducing it to a poor, soft high school team. Get over yourself and stop crying little girl. Randy is doing the right things by this program. Last I check it was his Alma Mater. So I would think he has the best intentions for it. Right little girl?

I'm not THAT pissed at Young, as this is an oppurtunity of a lifetime for him. However, as sure as Randy can sell recruits he can sell coaches. He pulled Young, a guy who OSU apparently thinks is worth $700k, out of KSU. He's going to announce a quality OC as early as tomorrow. And there's no doubt we can find a DC to come in and work with this incredible young talent. I doubt the recruits are flipping out as most of them bought into Shannon's bigger vision, not Bill Young's scheme.

We need to rally behind our head coach! Stick it to these Gator fans who think we're a bunch of front runners. Shannon is building a national powerhouse again just look at the talent (BTW our 2010 class is shaping up to be better than 08 and 09). C-A-N-E-S!

Rumor is the new OC has already been selected. So as bad as the timing is, we're only down one coordinator now. I wonder if we could lure Ron English from his HC gig at Eastern Mich? He had dominant lines for several years at Michigan.

1st of all, to all the Gator and other fans on the blog, our recruiting class will not fall apart. Bill Young only had a hand in recruiting Luther Robinson, no one else on the defense. To all true UM fans, do not get into the hype that some members of the media (not Manny) are trying to portray about the program. As far as UM not "ponying up" and paying Young $700 K for his services, most teams do not pay their coordinators more that $500 K, so I don't think this is a case of UM being cheap (that has been the case in the past), I believe this is a case of OSU really wanting Young and over paying for him. UM will have a proven/veteran Pro-Style OC by Friday. As far as getting an DC, don't you think that Randy had a list of guys that he wanted after he replaced Walton last year? Bill Young just happened to be on the top of the list and took the job. While it is a loss to the program, I believe that this replacement will not be as hard as it was to find an OC. IMHO, Coach Shannon knows little about offense. Defense is his fortay, thus, he will be able to find a replacement a lot easier. I agree with Coach Shannon that no one on the staff is ready for the responsibility yet, thus he will find a capable replacement. He lured Young from a good job in Kansas, he can do the same again with another coach. Besides that, they are probably other DC's out there who have lost their jobs, due to the HC getting fired. I believe that LSU got rid of their DC and made an upgrade by hiring John Chavis, who was formerly at Tennessee. I don't know much about LSU's former DC, but he may be a good choice. What about the former DC at Auburn? What about a proven Defensive assistant on USC's staff since Nick Holt left for Washington? Point is, this came at a bad time, but there are lots of options that UM has. I am sure that Coach Shannon and Kirby Holcutt will make the right decision.

What's the likely hood of bringing Soldinger back as the RB coach? I never understood why Coker fired him. C'mon, Edge, Portis, Davenport, McGahee, Gore?

Chaos? Miami? Who would have guessed?

Oh well, at least no one is talking about Marve any more! We've moved on . . . to yet another crisis du jour.

What next?

Their is probably a very good DC on a 2nd tier SEC team (a team that will never win the SEC, much less get to the SEC championship game) that UM can hire away. Believe me TRUE Canes fans, the sky is not falling. With all of the talent that we recruited last year and the crop that we will be bringing in, the DC position at UM sells itself. Lets get an OC by Friday and then lock up a DC. Randy knows defense and has prospects lined up!!! This will all be an after thought while we are watching the spring game. Don't let these gutless Gayturd fans who have nothing to do with their time get you down and break down your morale as regards the program, coaching staff or team. We are fans of the University of Miami, the greatest football team over the past 26 years!! We will be back on top soon and all of these gutless scum bags who come on here won't be heard from again!! Keep the faith!! Go Canes!!

SHANNON HAS MY UPMOST RESPECT AND SUPPORT!!!!

WOW JUST WOW

I FEEL 4 HIM!!!! HE NEEDS SOME SUPPORT!!!

BOOSTER CLUB, COACHING , PLAYERS, MEDIA AND FANS!!!

MONEY TALKS . . . BILL YOUNG WALKS!

young leaving is just a product of college football. loyalty to a program by a coach and no less their players has unfortunately diminshed over the years. in shannon you have someone who is committed to the program for the long term. he ain't going anywhere. what's interesting is that shannon has been modeling this and asking for this from his players (a la fortson, spence, futch, jacory--even with the oregon wavering last year). yes we want the talent, but we want committed talent-- players and coach. shannon is trying to build a different kind of program here-- one different than his predecessors (butch, erikson, jj, even schnelly). if shannon won 10 national championships he would be right here. there are very few programs that are built this way. virginia tech comes to mind. any others? what do ya'll think?

After giving up 103 points and 908 rushing yards in the last three games, I don't see what's so great about Bill Young and his defensive scheme. I'd like to see the next DC emphasize pass rush because harassing the quarterback will set up turnovers and negative plays. Our defense for the past few years has been content to rush four players about 90 percent of the time.

Donna "Comrade" Shalalala needs to go. There are plenty of coordinators that make better money than Young. Young is and old sage and very experienced coordinator, he should probably be the highest paid DC in most conferences, especially the ACC. To have a coordinator stolen from us by Oklahoma State of all teams is embarassing and should not have been allowed to happen. If it's his alma mater and home and he wants to go, that's fine, but don't give us this crap about him already being well paid. If we match the offer $ wise and he still wants to go, then wish him well, but at least make it a tough decision.

Since Shalalalalala got here it has not been "All about the U"... it's been "all about the $$$". She could give a damn about success as measured by wins and losses. To her, success is measured simply by the size of the University's endowment.

This is not to say that there is not a place for that sort of thing, but don't preach that you are committed to excellence, when all you're committed to is wringing every last penny from the wallets of Miami's football fans, supporters, boosters and season ticket holders while pinching every last penny when it comes to running the football team.

Donna Shalala was the wrong President at the wrong time and she has to go before the 'Canes will again see real success on the field.

Are you kidding me ? Still trying to get over the Emerald Bowl debacle and now this.

Wake up people, all the rumors of Randy being an arrogant and difficult person to work with are TRUE. Shannon is in over his head, I would not be surprised if he got fired before next season. How long will Kirby tolerate this guy?
Probably forced to tolerate him, because it's built into Shannon's contract. Randy answers to Randy...

Willie Martinez would not degrade himself, by coming here to work for this fool. Great message to send to all the kids who red-shirted last year and in-coming recruits...

I miss the OB days of the late 80s and early 90s, but this $hit is ridiculous. No leadership, NO continuity, NO process to success in place.

For those of you out there thinking Randy's ability to get the inner-city blue chippers to stay home is his BIGGEST asset, WAKE UP. Bamboozled UM to think because he is BLACK and a former player that only HE knew the formula to success again at MIAMI.

He used RACE to get the HC job at UM. That's a fact and the fear of losing the recruiting wars in this backyard forced Shalala's hand. How many blue-chippers from Miami-Dade are coming to the U this year ? 3 or so ??

All hype, all BS, over-recruited, alienated his own staff, including local HS coaches.

***Talk about, BLIND LEADING THE BLIND !!!

Good luck guys...not good for continuity, just wonder if the coaching carousel has anything to do with the TOP DOG. He brought Nix and Young in...I'm sure firing one and losing another was not part of the plan, but maybe someone else needs to be screening for the OC and DC gigs to avoid further attrition.

Oh, well. This has happened many times before.

Hurt recruiting? No way. The kids are coming here because of "The U" and Shannon.

Top secondary recruit Prince Kent's first words were "Who is Bill Young? I'm going to the U because of Coach Shannon and Coach Barrow. Bill Young? Don't know he is."

I think this may be a great opportunity to turn some "lemons into lemonade".

Shannon can get involved in the defense, again, in a major way as DC while moving Barrow and/or Hurt up to Co-Defensive Coordinator(s).

Also, with the extra money from BY's departure, it's just that much more to attract a top flight OC that Shannon can entrust the offense to, totally. As well, Shannon can find an "administrative coach" to free him to Coordinate the Defense. A job he was the best at for a 5 or 6 yr period.

It is quiet apparent that dealing or coaching for RS is a major major problem. He dosen't come across as a leader more like a person who needs a serious attitude adjustment and that's what he is going to get this year, a 5-7 attitude adjustment.

Paul M, embarrassing to be a fan? Your not a Canes Fan. Plus your an idiot to think anything
a defensive coordinator does is going to have an effect on Brown, a Running Back's decision.

1) Kent a Top secondary recruit (for your info he's a defensive player that should be effected by Young's departure)

- Prince Kent's first words were "Who is Bill Young? I'm going to the U because of Coach Shannon and Coach Barrow. Bill Young? Don't know he is."

2) Brown's decision to pick UM or not will have nothing to due with Young's decision.

3) Assistant coaches move all the time. And they always move after the season/bowl games which falls right in the middle of recruiting decision time. So, your instability argument fails.

Now, if Young left because he didn't like it,OK, but he left to close out his career (he's 62 and retiring in 3 yrs) at his school. He played at OSU in the '60's.

The point is - any recruit that wants to leave because Young left, please go. We don't want you or your kind, we want True Canes only!

The worst case scenario, if Shannon decides to take the DC job as well, you get to play for the very best DC in college football.

Paul M, the only embarrassing thing is you calling yourself a fan. That's embarrassing!

Allen, your just another ignorant fool.

Assistant coaches move all the time. And they always move after the season/bowl games which falls right in the middle of recruiting decision time.

Young left because he wanted to close out his career(he's 62 and retiring soon) at the school he played for in the '60s. In his own words - he loved it here, if it had been an offer from any other school he wouldn't have taken it.

Wow Shannon has got this thing going. Both of his handpicked coordinators are gone and one of their replacements. Finished the season strong with 3 loses. Starting QB Transfers. The program is on the way back.

Neither Barrow or Hurtt deserve a promotion. The Dline has slumped since Palermo left and LB's have been mediorce at best. Everybody saw how the promotion with Walton worked.

Its amazing reading some of the comments on this blog. I don't see where racism, comes into play with anything happening with the U of Miami right now. Bill Young, took an opportunity to go back to where he started and come full circle. I can understand that and I am sure they money he makes will go a lot further in Stillwater, Oklahoma, than Coral Gables, Florida.
As for some of these so-called fans, its easy for you to criticize something you are not involved in or have any responsibility for. If you were all so called football geniuses, thats what you would be getting paid for your expertise.

Randy, has been around the University of Miami his entire college and professional career since leaving the NFL, so I would think he would have a lot more invested than any of you so called fans and has his finger on what is going on and kids are responding to that.

The kids who put on the pads are what matter, not fair weather fans..

Blind-leading-da-Blind, the only blind one here is you. I'll keep it simple;

Nix, was a hired on yr to yr contracts. He was always a fill in and if he worked out in his 1st or 2nd yr great.

Young at 62 was only going to coach a couple more yrs anyway. He left to close out he's career at the school he played at 40 yrs ago.

His words, "I love it here at Miami and this is the only offer I would accept - to close out my career at my school, OSU, it's the only way I would leave Miami."

Get your dog, your cane and your butt outta here!

Gayturd get off our board. Don't you have anything better to do? True Canes fans know Randy is following the plan and building a powerhouse loaded with depth at every position. This isn't a one or two year quick fix. Its a four to five year plan to create a football program that once again dominated college football.

Oh and what plan you ask? Canes fans know it. Schellenberger started it. Johnson followed it. Davis followed it.

1) Get a coach that can put a fence around south Florida first (Miami MW, Booker T, etc), then go up state (Sanford, Tampa, Jacksonville, etc), and finish out of state (LA, TX, GA, etc).

2) With the talent comes the $ and great coaches (give it until Friday and I gaurantee our offense and defense will be in good hands).

3) Talent and depth on the field with good coaching = national prominence.

Cane4Life, good stuff. I don't get all the hand ringing over this. Bill Young went to the school he played for - to close out his career. He's 62 and will only coach a couple more yrs and he gets an offer from his school. In his own words;

"I loved it here at Miami and it's not about money, it's about going home to coach. Any offer from any other school would not have been of interest to me - it's UM or OSU only."

So, there is no problem with Shannon as some of these "so called canes fans" like to say. He simply left to "go home" to coach out his remaining 2 or 3 yrs. And there the fans that just don't it - coaches leave schools after the season's over. And those that fear we will loose recruits over this, well I think Prince Kent said it best when asked what he thought;

- Kent's first words were "Who is Bill Young? I'm going to the U because of Coach Shannon and Coach Barrow. Bill Young? Don't know he is."

Last but not least, people seem to forget that Jimmy Johnson's been involved as "UM's Parcells" working daily with RS and using all his connection to find the best coaches available as well as constantly mentoring Randy.

So, The U is in good hands and all will turn out for the best.
