Cards-Ravens Super Bowl would help Canes

Playoffs? NFL playoffs at Eye On The U? Normally, I wouldn't bother bringing them up in this blog. But these days -- with recruiting really heating up -- you never know what can help and hurt. And my guess is you probably won't find a bigger Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens fan this coming week than UM coach Randy Shannon.

Edgerrin_jamesWhile Philadelphia and Pittsburgh don't have any UM players on their teams, the Cards and Ravens have seven former Canes between them. You know who they are: running backs Edgerrin James (Arizona) and Willis McGahee (Baltimore), safeties Antrel Rolle (Arizona) and Ed Reed (Baltimore), defensive lineman Calais Campbell (Arizona) and linebackers Tavares Gooden (Baltimore) and Ray Lewis (Baltimore). But if there was ever a real reason for Canes Nation to root for an Arizona-Baltimore Super Bowl in Tampa Feb. 1, it's recruiting.

While recruits obviously know all about Miami's history (the five rings and the countless first round picks) Ray_lewishaving something fresh and as big as the Super Bowl to talk about in those living room and in-home visits with mom and dad could prove quite valuable to Shannon. Let's not forget all the times those former Canes could throw up a U during Super Bowl week and on media day. Writers are sure to jump on that angle. In the end, that's some nice, very visible free advertising for the Canes. And, at the perfect time for Shannon, who is coming off a mediocre 7-6 season.

> After finally getting back home from the snowy Boston Sunday night, I got a chance to have a long conversation with one of my guys at The U who told me the NFL -- and helping players reach it -- is what Shannon has been selling hard to recruits over the last couple of weeks. And, my source told me, that's why Shannon is intent on bringing in an offensive coordinator who will run a pro style offense. "Whoever thinks coach Shannon wants a conservative offense is wrong," he said. "He wants an offense that's going put up points and help guys get to the next level. That's who we are. We've always been about winning and getting guys to the pros. Ask Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson and all those guys how much it helped to play a pro style. It got them ready."

> As for the offensive coordinator search, I was told there is now some level of urgency on the coaching staff's part (not athletic director Kirby Hocutt) to fill the spot in the next few weeks. The reason: UM wants to be able to show recruits like Bryce Brown (a soft commitment) what type of offense the team will run. UM isn't scared it'll lose Brown (who is supposed to visit either Jan. 23 or 30) but the Canes want to ensure him and other potential recruits the offense will be in good hands. Brown, the nation's No. 1 running back, visited Kansas State over the weekend and told The Manhattan Mercury he's opened up conversation with Tennessee.

> By the way, I've also been told nobody has officially been interviewed in person for the OC job, but several candidates have been contacted over the phone. Our Barry Jackson reported Sunday Mike Shula was one of the ones to decline interest when asked. Shannon, who is not at the College Football Coaches Association meetings in Nashville this week (the majority of his staff is), will likely begin formal interviews this week. Shannon had been on the road doing in-home visits with recruits over the past week -- including making a stop at the home of receiver Rueben Randle, Rivals.com's No. 1 pass-catcher. Randle has told several publications he is now considering Miami again because the Canes got rid of Patrick Nix.

Tebow is Back !!!

U Suck On It Another Year

gaitor, GFYS!

It's all about the U. Miami is gonna make their way back to a powerhouse, while Florida is going to slip away. Guaranteed.

Gator- Just like the last bible banger who won a NC (Danny Wuerffel). Tebone-the pastor will be back... and what was of UF between 1997 and 2006? Tell me please tell me what happened during those years! Tebone will graduate a loser. Instead of leaving college this year a winner. Regardless, he will fall by the wayside of Tim Crouch of Nebraska- Gimmicky offenses never produce NFLers!

Manny- It's already got to help, by seeing former CAnes rip it up in the playoffs- The CArolina-Arizona game was a hoot to watch: Antrel Rolle makes a pick, and a few plays later, Jon Beason picks a Kurt Warner pass only to be tackled by Edgerrin James.

Recruits: UF may have a "nice" team. They backed themselves into this NC quite nicely, no thanks to the BCS. Their offense is gimmicky, mickey mouse and not amenable to the pros. Pro teams would eat that up. Gobble it up. HAving Tebone run up the middle like that, he would be out of the NFL within 6 games with a concussion. But beleive me you, you want to play on Sundays, come to NFL-U. Period. Look at the numbers. UF, LSU, USC, Texas and Ohio State have won the last 8 nat. championships, and UM STILL has more players in the NFL than those teams!

It's not an accident. The U is the pipeline to the pros... Now if we can only put a stop to this gator cra---p.........

Nemo's in the house.

if randle is now considering the U due to the dismissal of nix, then who gets picked as tnew OC is paramount to bringing this stud in (along with brown...)

last I saw, the main goal in a college football program is to win, which UF with it's 'gimmicky offense" has been doing lately. so you can keep your pro's and we will keep on winning, something which has eluded UM for the past several years.

gary feeman of ITU reports that dion sims has narrowed his list to two and the canes are on it. anyone know who the other team is (ohio st. or mich. st, i would assume)? any word on when he is gonna make a decision...we need a TE badly and this guy is very athletic!

Randle's a beast would love to get him, Manny this is good stuff, thanks man.

I hear that Linda Robertson did another hatchet job this morning on Da u. Isn't this the same dingbat who suggested we change our name from Hurricanes after Andrew? Manny, there is nothing wrong with a woman writing about sports, but the Herlad should consider finding one that actually knows something about sports. I think Donna should kick her arse next time they run into each other. No wonder the Herlad reasdership is down. You don't spit into the eye of the storm.

And people thought getting rid of Nix would hurt recruiting. These kids aren't dumb.

And lots of schools do lots of winning when the Canes get sanctioned or stop recruiting S. Fla. But we're back doing what we do and all the gimmicky offenses will make way for our pro-set in a few years. We'll re-stock our talent and start running the right offense, and all of these "flavor-of-the-month" offenses will be exposed for what they are...gimmicks.

Well of course Teabag in gonna come back. They screen for roids way more in the pros than they do in College. That gives him another year to try and ween off of them. We should start a bet, will teabag blow his heart or his knee up first? You make the call.........

Teebags= the next Tony Mandarich?
The NCAAS steroid testing program is a joke, but this issue is going to catch up to Superman sooner or later.

So the question is which Tebow is back, the one that won the ational championship, or the one that won the heisman, but lost to Michigan in the Outback bowl? Kinda funny to see a choir boy play for the devil. Tebow and Meyer remind me of Reeves and Pacino in the Devil's Advocate! Hey that was where Reeves started out was in Gainesville!

The rest of the Country can see the slow but rapidly speeding spiral that The Hurricane program is in... Why can't U ?

U keep bringing in just "good" recruiting classes and hang on to that "We're Young" mantra year after year...

It's the perfect battle cry for "Excuse U."

Meanwhile, we outside of Ur cracking glass house will just continue to hold back our laughing, just smile and shake our heads...

Duh U ='s the 21st. Century Notre Dame South .

DENIAL

1. an assertion that something said, believed, alleged, etc., is false: Despite his denials, we knew he had taken the purse. The politician issued a denial of his opponent's charges.

2. refusal to believe a doctrine, theory, or the like.

3. disbelief in the existence or reality of a thing.

4. the refusal to satisfy a claim, request, desire, etc., or the refusal of a person making it.

5. refusal to recognize or acknowledge; a disowning or disavowal: the traitor's denial of his country; Peter's denial of Christ.

6. Law. refusal to acknowledge the validity of a claim, suit, or the like; a plea that denies allegations of fact in an adversary's plea: Although she sued for libel, he entered a general denial.

7. sacrifice of one's own wants or needs; self-denial.

8. Psychology. an unconscious defense mechanism used to reduce anxiety by denying thoughts, feelings, or facts that are consciously intolerable.

U Need To WAKE UP !!!

Seriously, are we to believe that simply because there are some former 'Canes players in the Playoffs that that's somehow going to help with The U's recruiting process this year?

Good greif ... We are in big trouble.

excuse me while I go and hitch my wagon to the next Space Shuttle.

GET A TOP FLIGHT O.C. AND PLAYERS TO COMPLIMENT !!!

WE NEED POINTS DAMNIT !!!

Hey Gayturd....Go away. Who died and left you an expert? Go get a Teabag on your chin from your QB.

gator: were was yall 1997 -2006 every school has its downtimes when have we ever said we were young beside this year and matter of fact why are you on this blog this is for THE U fan base and U get mad because were talking smack about ur team but ur the one who started the bashing the first little salad tosser to bash the U get a life buddy enjoy ur time on top it dosen't last forever ask jo pae if it does

Does Tebow's return as well as Percy's help the Canes? I think it does! In recruiting, that is.

Think of star recruits that are mulling over which program to go for. Do they want to go to a program with a gimmicky offense, where Heisman winners and gamebreakers like Tebow and Percy are afraid to go to the NFL?

Or do they want a program with a history of getting players drafted in the first round (chi-ching!) and with players actually succeeding in the NFL? Tune into any random playoff game and you'll see Canes. Or, on any random day in the season, go to the NFL stats leaders page and you'll almost always see Canes in a variety of categories.

And although it's bad for the U, we actually prepare players for the NFL in less time. How many of those first-round draft picks were seniors? Not many. Think of the risk injury-prone Percy Harvin would be taking if he finally decides to stay another year. But at the U, players have historically been ready to go their junior years, taking with them a solid understanding of NFL-style offensive schemes and membership in a strong and vibrant fraternity of U alumni at the next level.

So all that talk by Urban about there being "permanent" recruiting strategies in place at UF -- that's bull$hit! Players know that gimmicky offenses don't prepare them well for the next level. Moreover, UF (in the early 90s and today) as well as FSU have only had success in periods of Canes-self destruction, destruction usually brought about by coaches jetting for the NFL. But Randy is here to stay, so if anyone can talk about anything permanent in recruiting, it's the Canes, NOT the Gators.

LET'S GO CANES!!!

Why do these Gator schmucks keep coming on Canes blogs? Nothing better to do, I guess. Thump your chests, enjoy your championship and stay on your blogs where the only people you would irritate are like-minded. Kudos, now go back home.
Go Canes!

Seriously, are we to believe that simply because there are some former 'Canes players in the Playoffs that that's somehow going to help with The U's recruiting process this year?

Good greif ... We are in big trouble.

Who the hell says good grief?

Manny I love my former Canes but I am a Steeler fan therfore I want the season to end for the Ravens this weekend!

Gator, I share your enthusiasm, but unfornatley
I remember UF between 1997 and 2006. I remember why this happened and why it will happen again.

Gator, most importantly it's Meyer and his offense. His offenses are very exciting and great for kids with more speed than talent.

In '96 UF's recruiting changed for the better, only because UM had been hit with "the NCAA's death penaly."

I remember many UF recruits saying the UM system was their favorite because it's a "pipeline" into the NFL.

But because of the restrictions they liked the fun and gun offense, for it's "fun" and gimmickry. Not that it will produce an NFL pipeline like UM's, but it will showoff speed if not talent.

And that's the same problem with Meyers "super gimmickry" system. And that has helped to give UM has it's recruiting swagger back. And the reasons are the same - The UM system is a pipeline into the NFL that shows of talent and speed.

Just look at NFL on any given Sunday, and even now in the playoffs the number of UM impact players is astounding. I don't see that with UF.

Now, to Meyer himself.

I'm a UF undergrad and I went to Notre Dame for graduate school.

I live here in South Bend and I'm heavily involved in football coaching matters with regard to our Alumni. And after next season we will extend an offer to Meyer that he can't refuse.

I see this as a plus for both schools. NDU needs a winning program and UF needs to change and produce an offensive system that will show the recruits they too can produce an NFL pipeline.

We are #1 ... for now!

GAytor-
You may notlike to hear it, but the gatoes have relatively few players in the NFL. Furthermore the goal of 99% of these college players in big time programs is to get to the next level, whether youlike it or not. You said, UM has been losing the last several years, but correct me if I am wrong, UM has beaten UF 3 of 4 in the last "several years". And if it wasnt for your cracker AD being afraid of playing UM, it would have been much worse.

Yeah, so UM fans are biding their time and vicariously cheering former cane players in the NFL- Because these players typically come back home to help their young cane brothers along, and because it's a cane thing you wouldn't understand.

HAve fun with your third NC. Congrats. You deserve to be happy. Just remember these times when the cards flip around and look around your Gaytor blogs to see if any of us go on there to talk smack. There won't be. Because we for the most part could give a cra-p about your bible banging team. Unlike losers like you who actually feel the need to come on UM blogs to talk your petty smack. Act like you've been there.

Someone said earlier (I believe it was Gator) that the purpose in college football is to win games....Not totally true.....The U has and always will prep players for the pros, that's becuase they think abou tthe player not themselves. Name one player who has played under Urban who is a top pro player?....go head...I'm waiting......The gimick offense is set up to put up points, win big, make the program and coach look good.....UM has always and should always focus on the player and getting em paid!.....We will begin to win (and did this past year as folks seem to forget)....

Urban: We will garauntee you a great college career, put up a shyt load of points, and after 5 years you will have a degree and maybe a ntl title.

Shannon: You will graudate in 3-4 years. We will put you in competition to win, and will give what you need to go to the next level! Follow those steps and we will win a NTL championship along the way!

GoCanes, are you really that ignorant? Or are you really a Gay-tor fan that see's the future.

Here's one of your honest Gay-tor buddies,s that see's the future:

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/umiami/2009/01/cards-ravens-su.html#comment-144847608

You just have to look at the past to see the future.

Get honest or educated, maybe both.

DA U N Houston, U are correct.
Some of these boneheaded UM fans that don't see this as an education for a career in the NFL are just ignorant.

Many of these kids academic careers are shaped so if they don't stick in the NFL they are ready to work in the NFL from and administrative stand point.

Great point.

The NFL is the dream for 99% of these student athletes. So having NFL players representing The U in the NFL playoffs is a recruiting tool. The spread offense is successful in college but it really has most kids (especially QBs and WRs) behind and they face greater learning curves when they get to the next level. That's one of many reasons I was so happy to see Nix go.

The purpose of college football is to win period.. graduate players is a little futher down the list.. honestly the canes have a long way to go with talent, depth, and experience.. i am a die-hard cane but this is down period for the program

Consider this: Tebow comes back because he knows he will go nowhere in the NFL. 4th round pick. He has to stay where he will be on top of the hill. You'll never hear of him again after this year.

I REALLY HOPE CANES FANS BOYCOTTS SUN-SENTINEL, DAVE HYDE, IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME WHEN ALL THESE CANES FAN WILL STICK IT TO YOU, I REALLY HOPE YOU GET IT!!!!! YOU'RE SO IDIOTIC, I CAN'T BARE SEE THE FRONT PAGE OF SUN-SENTINEL, YOU MAKE THEIR PUBLICATION SEEM VERY AMATEURISH, AND IF HERALD CONTINUES TO LET ROBERTSON WRITE ANOTHER ARTICLE, THEIR WON'T BE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE, IF ANYTHING, I THINK THESE TWO CLOWNS CALL EACH OTHER UP AND GIVE EACH OTHER SUGGESTION ON WHAT TO WRITE AGAINST THE U, HOPE YOU GET A BITE IN THE ASS FOR WRITING SUCH NEGATIVE THINGS, DARE I SAY CARMA? IS THIS A HATE MAIL, YOU DAMN WRITE IT IS AND I DON'T GIVE A DAMN!!!!

I REALLY HOPE CANES FANS BOYCOTTS SUN-SENTINEL, DAVE HYDE, IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME WHEN ALL THESE CANES FAN WILL STICK IT TO YOU, I REALLY HOPE YOU GET IT!!!!! I am with you 100% DAVE HYDE IS AT IT AGAIN!!!!the sentinel is nuts and robertson is a cane hater!!

Unfortunately, the Super Bowl will be an all-Keystone State affair, with no 'Canes involved, and we can kiss Bryce Brown goodbye.

lefty, The U was down in talent and depth, but with RS recruiting this is changing.

UM's graduation rate has been at the top for yrs. In fact, the 2001 NC's was tied for # 2 in graduation rate. The highest for a NC team, ever.

I don't understand the logic of letting those kinds of articles on. Why would you want to CONTINUE to piss off the fan base. I mean these are your readers and you continue to print this crap. I was the biggest Dave Hyde fan. Now I feel let down that not only has he betrayed us once but he continues to pour it on. If pissing your readers off is good for business than Hyde has certainly hit the jackpot.

Manny on the other hand is a hard working guy who has the pulse of his fans. He knows what we want and he delivers.

Sorry Trevor, I didn't know the Gay-tors were in the running for Brown. I guess he's coming to us - The U.

Trevor, regardless which teams are in the Super Bowl, the Canes Alumni are making an impact every week in the NFL. And this has always made an impact on our recruiting. I know this hurts as the Gay-tor you are, but read what a fellow "thinking" Gay-tor has to say:

Quick correction...

Gary FERMAN is not from ITU, he's from Canesport (Rivals).

5 nat'l titles (6 if you count the 2002 fiesta bowl) ...... 10 nat'l championship appearances(and i wont mention how we got snubbed in 2000)... Gator, enjoy your cute little 3 rings.... cause they are reeeeeeeal cute!!!!!!!

even with our crappy past 4 years.... we are still the most dominating program in the last 30 years....

It's all about the "U"

and the recruits know that!!!!!!!

i think that what these writers are trying to do is to open up the eyes of Canes fans that Randy Shannon is not the right fit for University of Miami and all he had done for the program are mediocre at best, what these writers lack of is common sense, especially the local writers, because any writer on their right mind would not bash a program and think it wouldn't back fire on them, the Fans really could care less about what the media reports about Shannon, but once the the whole program gets affected, it's a different story coz' now we're talking about the school itself, their academics, students, student-athletes, and everybody involve within the program, these fans are trying to be as optimistic as possible, and chose to close their eyes and block their ears in regards of what Shannon had done lately, everybody is aware that in 2 years Shannon hasn't really done that much of an improvement compared to cokers years, so i think the last thing the fans wants to hear from the media is how and where the U program is headed, none of the fans wanna hear this, they just wanna hear things that are positive, after all wether the fans know better or not, without them, writing about the U would be irrelevant, so instead of negatives, bring in the positives, write something about how the whole northwestern kids gave the program some hope for the future, about the graduation rate compared to other florida schools, about how the 09 recruits don't let the the marve drama and nix firing affect their decision on coming to the U, write something like that instead of villifying urself against the U nation!!!! i hope everybody can agree to this, it's not just about marve, and his dad and hs coach, and Shannon, and Nix firing etc., it's all about the U as a nation and people within the program, think about the current kids we have on here right now, how do you think they're getting affected by all these, if media is trying to making it seem as if they care about marve being a piece of meat, how do you think the other current players are feeling right now, they have to deal with this everyday now from this point on, thanks to the media contributing to the whole mess and making it bigger than it already was, so Dave Hyde, Linda Robertson, Dan Wetzel and Gene Wojciechowski, you try to make things right for one guy (Robert Marve), but you have no idea how many other kids are affected by this, if you're going to villify someone, villify urselves first for contributing to an already negative status marve and Shannon and everyone else involved in this than they already are!!!!

I know that some of U are saying that It is important to get your degree first then the pros. Man let me put perseption vs reality in perspective.

First the economy is bad and just because U have a degree doesn't mean U will have a JOB come next year. It is a rat race out there people, take the money while U can because tomorrow is not promise. What makes U think the recession will not last a long time. Hell if I am being projected in the first two rounds I am out! Anything can happen next year ( LARGER WARS,TERRORIST ATTACKS, A MORE STRUGGLY ECONOMY..ANYTHING THAT MAKES THE AMERICA HEAD SOUTH) thinking that I will still get in the NFL REGARDLESS is kinda of getting complacent. Get the money people because U can still pay for your last year of school and get that DEGREE that may only put U in line with the rest the UNEMPLOYED. Man I am manager for a national known moving company and I get people looking for work every single day and i mean non stop. So take head to what I am saying people there are A LOT OF UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE OUT THERE!

BESIDES DEGREE WITH NO EXPERIENCE = ENTER RAT RACE TO FIND A JOB...MEANTIME U ARE BROKE AND STUCK WITH UNPAID BILLS!! DEGREE WITH LITTLE EXPERIENCE = THE LINE IS SHORTER FOR U BUT STILL UNEMPLOYMENT MAY LINGER!!! BEST ADVICE...GET THE DAMN MONEY AND GO WHERE U CAN SURVIVE THE RECESSION, BUY YOUR DEGREE AND BE SELF EMPLOYED!!!!

I am not sure what the Canes problems are coaching wise; but to have the amount of talented players they do and to under perform like they do is very odd....look all around the country and tons of other coaches are doing FAR more with less talented players!!!!! Leach, Davis, Gragthorpe, Johnson, Graham, Paterno, Schnellenberger, Cristabol, Levitt, Oleary, Schiano, Beamer, Jagodinski, Bowden, Pelini, Saban, Erickson, Hawkins, Gill, Gundy, Brooks, Grobe, Nutt, Spurrrier, Miles, Solich etc etc etc... the list is endless!

you would think it'll a clear cut choice to go Florida, then why do they keep having commits back off on their pledge and instead going to a school with lesser chance to get to NC, i mean sure you have to compete for playing time, but isn't that the same case with USC and USC don't have trouble keeping their players, is there a reason for them to have second thoughts about UF??? or is it maybe the way Meyer promises them something and not deliver to that promise??? i'd appreciate if someone can give me an insight bout that!?

I would imagine the recruits that back off from big schools ie UF are scared to compete and their egos have them expecting to start right away.

my bad bg1906, i was in a rush. you are right. more importantly, anyone know the story with sims?

hey manny, it have a weird feeling that we will lost bruce brown because tennesee and now usc trojan make a run for b.brown. i hope we can keep this kid.

can you update me what you think will happen? i know b.brown supposed to visit miami in next week or 2 week from now.

Trojans make run at nation's No. 1 tailback

While on his way to rushing for 1,873 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2008, Wichita (Kan.) five-star running back Bryce Brown pulled plenty of 360s. Months after his senior season finale, Brown maybe pulling a 180. Committed to Miami, but naming Oregon as the school holding the lead for his signature, Brown may end up taking an unexpected official visit.

btw, Sims is in fact between Miami and Michigan State. Hmmm, Coral Gables or East Lansing...tough choice kid!

The local Media is ok, the problem is the deluded UM fans. Most of you are too crazy to see the truth. From the Emerald bowl 2-Mins disaster to the Marve Fiasco your Coach has shown himself to be a bumbling fool. The Canes fan deserve what they have coming to them this upcoming season for blindly supporting your inept coach. Shannon has proven he is not the answer and watch as this team quits on him. When are you guys going to see the light??? Is it after Oklahoma blows us out again?? Or will it be after the 3rd game of seeing players unable to wrap up on a tackle?? or maybe it will be after another running QB rips us for 100 yards; maybe just maybe it’s after Georgia Tech comes into our house and runs for 500 yards again. Admit it people, Shannon sucks and the only solution is either he is fired or he gets 100% better this season. From his handling of the Marve situation I doubt he is going o change. A coward afraid of a 19 year old; truly sad.

Shannon is far from a perfect coach but just watch the NFL draft this year and you will see how far the talent level had fallen at the U. The 07 canes had no "playmakers" and was truly an aweful team. The best players on the 08 team are primarily freshmen and every game relatively close. They still have big holes to fill on both O and defense. You can see talent regardless of coaching. That is why they are projecting the first cane to go in this draft will likely be the 5th round. It looks to me Shannon is bringing in another good recruiting class with "playmakers" on both sides. Results on the field will eventually decide Shannon's fate at the U. I am predicting better results in 09.
