The excitement surrounding the next football hire at the University of Miami reached the basketball court earlier today when coach Frank Haith opened his press conference with with an update. "I've got breaking news," Haith joked. "I'm taking the offensive coordinator job."
All jokes aside, somebody is expected to get the job soon (at least that is what I was told by a UM source inside). The hot name I and everyone else is hearing now in the last 24 hours is the one our Barry Jackson reported first a few weeks ago -- Philadelphia Eagles assistant coach Mark Whipple. I'm not saying that's definitely the guy, but that is the name emitting from just about everywhere.
Just so you know, I got off the phone with UM Sports Information Director Kerwin Lonzo at 4:15 p.m. who told me "we've got nothing to report yet." Lonzo promised me as soon as he hears something he'll get back to me and the other trillion news services who cover the Canes. Just so you know, I called the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this morning and spoke to their media relations department twice. No news from them either. I was told "all of our coaches are not in today."
The question is, is Whipple in the UM office today? "I know this, coach [Shannon's flight] got in late [earlier today]," Lonzo said. "We obviously have a big recruiting weekend. As soon as we get a chance to talk to him, we'll let you know if there is any news."
So, stay tuned. In the meantime...

Is there any truth to the rumors that Don Shula was spotted over at Hecht, potentially interviewing for the OC job?

canesteelejr,
did you say "bruh?" yeah right. . .
at any rate i agree with you, there is a time and a place for everything. where i break with you and your co-signers here is that the "luke years" brought us nothing but trouble." if i'm not mistaken it also brought us championships and nfl first round picks, and all-pros and future hall of famers. you underestimate these young men's ability to make the shift when they get to the nfl-- if they make it that far-- and for sure more than a few in these last few classes should be playing on sunday. somehow or another the u players have made it and are still making it through the league even with hiel goodell. so then, just so that we're clear, i do agree with you-- there is a time and a place for everything so----
ITS TIME TO BRING ON THE LUKE DANCERS!
ITS TIME TO BRING BACK THE SEXY AND THE SWAGGA OF THE U!
ITS TIME TO TAKE OVER THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD (IN TWO OR THREE YEARS OF COURSE).
HEAD * B**TY * AND CO*CK-- WHAT IT LOOK LIKE?

Clown!! u keep bringing up the word GAY. I know u dont want o come out ur moms basement but dare i say U wanna come out the closet. At the end of the day ur still a blog stalker who NEEDS help. Thats just what it is. Oh yeah florida has 4 or 5 decomments right after winning the NC how many decomments does miami have clown. Yeah I said bruh. I am a brotha. I know that's hard for you to believe because I'm not agreeing with you on bringing back Luke. I see us returning to having NC's & multiple 1st Round Draft Picks without Luke being involved. Why? Because this is the University of Miami. The Talent of the past players & the coaching got them to the NFL, not Luke. That was just a perk. Hard work & dedication got those men to the next level. Lets ask Coach Barrow if he was to see Luke back involved with The U. Before you blindly answer yes, I would do my research on Coach Barrow. And yes I know Luke coaches Little League Football. But if you watched his reality show, you'd know that he's not promoting that to those kids or his own.

canesteelejr,
please accept my apology for questioning your bruh-ther-lee-ness. if you say you're a bruh then you are. but know that in no way am i implying that being down with luke dancers is a mark of being a true brother. to be sure luke is the hall mark of patriarchy gone mad, misogeny, and the ruthless exploitation of our queens in the name of a dusky quest for mammon (look it up if you must).
at any rate, a few of us are having fun and frankly blowing off steam in this maddening wait for a word about whip and the oc position. i'm getting that sinking feeling that after all of this hype we're about to get left at the altar. i am usually the ultimate optimist about these things but we'll just have to see.
lastly, my original point was that the luke era, spanning from the 80's well into the 90's, did a lot to add to the miami mystique and swagga-- you can't argue that point. and while barrow as you claim was unfazed by this, countless others came up cloaked in this genre-- i know because i was there-- on the field, in the stands, in the clubs and at the parties. i won't name them here but the heroes who brought us the championships we spout off about have rolled in my car, streaked down the streets of the grove in the "bed races," partied at the goombay, and sat in the living room of my mother's and father's home just chillin. yes their's was a way of hard work, and committment, and a drive unmatched by other college and some pro teams. however, i'm clear that they played hard and they partied hard too.
bruh, this ain't really about luke, this is about an attitude, a mindset--(as nasty as they want to be), a roguishness that we used to see on the field. take no prisoners, play anyone, anytime, anywhere. i'm clear that luke ain't comin back. as a matter of fact he doesn't fit in this day and time. the game in many ways has passed him by-- and he knows it. however the edge that he brought to our championship teams cannot be questioned-- but you can try.
so then bruh, i'm with you for the most part-- but get your g-string out of a wad and let's cheer the canes on. and while we're at it someone tell that new running back we're getting-- is it mike james??? tell him to stop all that da*n smiling. roguish footballers is what we need not beauty contestants-- see lamar miller.

Manny I personal think if Mark Whipple came in for the (OC) and Tommy Tuberville came in as the (DC) the Miami HUrricanes will be fine. Tuberville comes back home, and him and Coach Shannon could turn things around on the defense even more since they both know defense! Let the offense go to the spread and let our young widereceivers (play makers) do there thing! GO CANES!!!!

Why is this Whipple toying with our emotions? I hope this delay in his decision is a negotiation ploy. If not, stay in philly with that walrus you call a boss

Patience, Canes fans!
Posted by: Doncmleon | January 24, 2009 at 11:43 PM
The fan's timetable doesn't matter. If he decides Sunday, Monday or a week from now...what difference does it make except to the fans?
Recruiting is going fine, Bryce is waiting, spring ball is still a ways away and Coach Whipple is trying to decide what's best for him. Any one who has a job now will go through the same thing. Anyone who has a job at a major program or the pros, that we would want, has to think long and hard about Miami after the last few years.
The biggest drawback to Whipple that I see is that Cowher is going to coach somewhere next year and he has said he wants Whipple. I would hate to be going through this again in August.

Just did a little research on Mark Whipple and he is known for coaching explosive offenses. His teams set offensive records at every college he coached at. Only negative I see is that if he came in and got the Canes ineffective offense in gear, he would very quickly become a prime candidate for head coaching jobs. Might not be a long term solution. For the short term, I can see recruits being excited about his offensive style and his connections to the NFL.

Speculation offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg won't be back for a seventh season with the Eagles was dismissed Saturday by a club spokesman.
Eagles football media relations director Derek Boyko double-checked the status of Mornhinweg with his boss, Andy Reid. Boyko said the head coach denied the reports, the rumors and the speculation.
Boyko also suspects reporters confused Mornhinweg with Mark Whipple, the Eagles' offensive assistant who sources say has sold his house and will leave the nest. Whipple likely will be named offensive coordinator of the University of Miami.
Eagles quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur was allowed to take the offensive coordinator job of the St. Louis Rams, where he teams with head coach Steve Spagnuolo, a former Eagles assistant.
Mornhinweg, 46, has been assistant head coach/offensive coordinator the past three years with the Eagles.
The Eagles ranked ninth in total offense, including sixth in passing and ranked sixth in the league in points scored.
Posted by: texascane | January 25, 2009 at 11:44 AM
So assume Whipple does take the job, he'll probably bolt as soon as Cohwer gets back in to coaching (next year maybe?). So again, we'll be doing the coordinator shuffle.....
