Shannon could take on role of DC again

We waited all afternoon to hear what Randy Shannon was going to say about losing his defensive coordinator. He released the following statement -- I consider the ending a bit eye-opening -- a few moments ago.

Randy Shannon “I appreciate Bill’s contributions to our football program and thank him for that," Shannon said. "I understand and respect Bill’s strong ties to his alma mater and his family’s ties to Oklahoma. I wish him and his wife, Lawana nothing but the best. I will be looking for the best possible defensive coordinator to replace him. If that candidate is not out there, those responsibilities will fall to me.”

Shannon told us when he first fired Tim Walton he preferred to find someone to coach the defense because being a head coach brought on too much responsibility. Now, it appears Shannon may be welcoming the idea.

As for Bill Young, this is what he said through UM's sports information department.

Bill_Young “I could not have worked for a finer man than Coach Shannon. It was a privilege to be associated with him and be part of an outstanding staff of coaches. Coach Shannon welcomed me and my family into the program from day one. I don’t think everyone realizes the caliber of kids that play at Miami. Not only are they great athletes but their character is what stands out the most and is something I will remember. The draw to go back home, be near family and coach at my alma mater was just too great to pass up."

I left a steamer on Kehoe's Mom's stomach! I think she liked it! Gross!

POOR LITTLE KEHOE, YOU GOT YOUR NEW CRYSTAL FOOTBALL, AND YOU STILL CANNOT FIND ANY GAYTOR'S WHO WANT TO PLAY WITH YOU!

YOU ARE THE BIGGEST LOSER ON THE WEB!

Go 'canes!!

The U should hire Jon Gruden.

U got evicted from the URine bowl and are stuck getting bent over by wayne for parking

Marve BOLTS

NIx gets fired

Bryce decommits

Young BOLTS

Randy scratches his clueless head and say, "we's building depths"

Paul Dee and Donna got together and after some monkey love they conspired to SCREW U its working

If Randy takes on DC/Coach doesnt that open up more money for a good OC?? Manny where u at?

Hey, Dr. Jack Van Impe, Lay off Jacory Harris. Harris was a true freshman this season. Cut the kid some slack. He will get stronger and bigger over the next three years. He's a proven winner and even a better person. Apparently, your not a Canes Fan!

Hey Kehoe,

When was the last time you heard a reporter say this about the GAytors, "This is quite possibly one of the greatest college football teams of all time."

Give up? Never! When you lose to Ole Mrs., they don't say things like that!

Congrats! A typical title for UF! 5 other schools have just as much right to the crystal ball as you do! Maybe if one of our recruits breaks the crystal football again, you can send pieces to TX, USC, and Utah!

DYNASTY???? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Go 'canes!

Right on Sarasota Cane!!!

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but if Shannon handles the DC duties, we would be allowed to hire a QB coach. Dorsey?

Georgia Tech would not have put up 400+ rushing yards on a Randy run defense. That was the worst prepared defense in the history of the U. How could loosing that be a bad thing. Save on the DC salary and give it to CHUD and make CHUD the OC and Assistant head coach.

Not one former, (Chud, Winston Moss, Tuberville, Willie Martinez, etc), cane wants to comeback here and be an assistant. The reason? Everyone of those individuals know that RS is an incompentent HC.

BTW as of Today (1/21/2009) 5 recruits (including the highly prized MArve and Shambrey McNeal)from Randy's first recruiting class are gone. There will be about another 4 more before spring practices begin. That leaves the recruiting class of 2007, with only 16 members.

My bet is that Randy convinces both Chud and Ron Meeks to come down here to coordinate.

Wow, you're stupid.

Hey DoubleCane,

Don't really agree with your premise, but I'm interested in who these kids are that are heading out before spring. Marve I think we can all agree was more trouble than he was worth. Shawnbrey from what I hear has family stuff going on. Mackenzie was buried on the depth chart, so that makes sense. Who were the other 2, and who are the new 4?

I think from those 3 alone, I'd only hold RS responsible for 1, Shawnbrey, if the family thing is just an excuse. The other 2 were pretty obviously just not a good fit.

Wow you fair weather fans. Shame on you. Give the coach a chance. Nix needed to be fired. Bill young wanted to go home. Thats it. It is not the end of the program. I think well be better for it. We need people who want to be at the U! Coach shannon is not perfect. And this year it is all on him, no excuses. if he doesn't get it done he's gone. But give him a chance. He's brought in 2 great recruiting classes with another on the way and already setting up 2010 class. Say what you want about his style and personality. There are alot of kids that want to play for him (and their studs). I say Coach Shannon HC/DC bring in Willie Martinez from UGA as Asst DC and Chud as OC. Also Soldinger and Kehoe. That way we have Miami people who will help bring the program back to National prominence. And alot of you fair weather fans will owe Coach Shannon an Apology.

Who are you to say who is responsible for what? You know nothing of any of those situations and neither does anyone on here, so shut up.

Wow...I am sorry but the guy got a job offer for 700k at the start of a depression in this country. He would be an idiot not to leave U. At some taking care of your family is way more important then a few wins on the field. Congratulations Bill Young you made the right move. I wish you could have stayed but your families well being is more important. Good luck and thank you for all your effort. It sure felt like you gave it 110% while you where here and the players responded well to your coaching. This program is not in disarray. We will hire an excellent OC and then Shannon will take over the D and hire an excellent assistant DC. I have no worries. Go Canes!

Pete Carroll is a HC/DC for those of you that didn't know. And he has a one loss team that crushed OSU in a BCS bowl. And his defense was #2 Total Defense for the year.

I think we'll be just fine. Shannon is doing the right thing.

All these Gator fans are just jealous we will steal some recruits from them this year just like we did last year. Remember the Cookie!!!

GO CANES!!!

We're in trouble! Now we're looking at a young team that has to learn different offensive and defensive schemes. Looks like it will be another crap bowl for us next year.

360Cane:

Pete Carroll also has way more experience than Randy Shannon does. The guy has been an NFL assistant and head coach, and he's also had excellent coaching staffs in the past 7 years. We don't have anything like Norm Chow or Steve Sarkisian on our staff, so it's not a fair comparison.

Who knows if we can even get Willie Martinez, I'm not convinced we can outspend a huge SEC program like Georgia. UGA isn't going to let a good coordinator go, if they do, we shouldn't be interested.

Eric:

Gruden as a head coach? Would be great, but he'd be gone after 1 successful season. That guy has too much NFL juice to coach in college for an extended period. Also, he would crush the confidence of every quarterback on our roster....Warren Sapp would put a choke-hold on him before fall camp.

Calm down Canes, if you read what I said *carefully*, you'd see the operative word IF in there. I'm saying of the 3 that did transfer, Marve and Mackenzie were not going to stay regardless of who the coach is. The only one who has a non-obvious reason is Shawnbrey. I trust that he's got family issues, I think I heard his mom is sick. I'm saying IF (AGAIN, *IF*), that's just an excuse and he really doesn't get along with Shannon, then that is the only transfer I can see being b/c of the head coach.

Way to make Canes fans look like pricks.

Everyone forgets that Pete Carroll is the HC/DC...Carroll calls the defenses. That is why the "DC" left and went with Sarkisian to Washington.

I like Martinez or RS being HC/DC - we'll be fine guys - relax.

COACH SHANNON WILL DO WELL. HE WAS A DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST WHEN HE PLAYED MANY YEARS AGO AT MIAM I NORLAND. JEREMIAH 33:10

Why is it that if someone calls themselves a realistic fan, they feel they have the right to say ridiculously critical things for what they know nothing about. Young was legitimately torn between the offer to stay and go home. With the money that was reportedly offered for him to be a coordinator back home, it's a no brainer he took the job. Nix, needed to be Nixxed! The play calling and clock management against Cal was his responsibility. Shannon gave him enough rope and he hung himself. There was no denying that after both the closing minutes of the first half and the then again in the second half of the Cal game that Nix had to go. We may not have any Coordinators right now 12 days out of signing day, but fear not that a talented and worth OC will be hired soon. Miami has too much talent and tradition to not attract someone that is capable of doing this the right way. As far as Defense, I'd be surprised if we don't have that position filled as well. Not to say Shannon won't have a more active role next season in the D, but he won't be doing it completely himself. Swasey is doing a great job of conditioning our players. What I'm looking forward to is a OC with strong fundamentals and a thin playbook. I like the idea of a Mitch Browning. I think he can come in, implement his strategy and philosophy and give these guys a real opportunity to surprise some opponents in the fall. Remember, in addition to the new recruits, we have a couple of last years recruits coming in as well that had to go back to school. our lines will be much improved. QB will be more consistent, RBs will find holes (thanks to improved lines), receivers are gonna be a year more confident and stronger, and defense will be where it needs to be. Lets not let the impatience we acquired under Coker, carry over to Shannon without giving him his proper chance. Top recruiting class last year, another top class this year, new offensive schemes to help move the ball and the U should turn a lot of heads, especially those of opposing defenses as we're blazing past them towards the endzone.
