What we're hearing: The OC search

Is there any news on the offensive coordinator front? Do we know who has been interviewed or contacted?

In short, my answer is no. I have nothing concrete from anyone at UM. Randy Shannon has always been somebody who keep his thoughts close to the vest. What I do know is the vacancy could be filled by Friday. Here is what I'm hearing in terms of candidates along with what is being reported by others across the country.

Eagles assistant Mark Whipple (left) watches Ben Roethlisberger throw the ball in 2006. > From conversations I've had with sources, the No. 1 guy on Shannon's OC wish list has been Eagles offensive assistant coach Mark Whipple. The former coach at UMass won a I-AA national title and has a Super Bowl ring as Ben Roethlisberger's position coach in 2006.  Whipple, 50, has spent his entire coaching career in the Northeast (except for one season with the Arizona Wranglers of the USFL in 1984). That reason, and because he's now been in the NFL since 2004 (once you move up you rarely see guys move back down to college) makes me believe he'll likely pass -- or has passed -- on the job. Also of note, an early morning report Wednesday out of Philadelphia said Eagles quarterbacks coach Mark Shurmur is leaving for the Rams offensive coordinator job. Whipple could become his replacement in Philly.

> I've been told the new top candidate is Rutgers offensive coordinator John McNulty. I received a phone call Tuesday night from a friend very deeply connected in the coaching circles who said McNulty has been offered the job at Miami and is now mulling it over. McNulty, 40, previously interviewed for the UM job in 2007. He passed and returned to Rutgers with a pay raise. Last year, McNulty interviewed with Nick Saban at Alabama and returned to Rutgers again.

Rutgers offensive coordinator John McNulty is believed to be one of UM's top choices for its vacant offensive coordinator position.. From what I was told, McNulty passed on the UM job the first go around because of the lack of talent on the offensive side of the football. Now, he likes what he sees (except for the offensive line). McNulty apparently would like to bring assistant coach Kyle Flood with him. Rutgers gave up the fewest sacks in the nation under Flood in 2007 and 2006. As for McNulty, Rutgers set school records for total offense (5,841 yards), points scored (421) and first downs in his first full season in 2007. The Knights also became the first Bowl Subdivision team to boast a 3,000-yard passer, a 2,000-yard rusher and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same year.

> Other names have popped up aside from those two. The ones who might appear to have some substance are former Minnesota and Syracuse offensive coordinator Mitch Browning, Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer, former San Diego State coach Chuck Long and Ron Prince, formerly of Kansas State. Long told The Miamih Herald he has had no contact with UM. Browning is apparently considering joining Lane Kiffin's new staff at Tennessee and Prince will likely end up in the NFL. Scherer signed a deal to be the quarterbacks coach with the Carolina Panthers Tuesday.

Is McNulty more pass or run?? Does he run a pro set?

Thanks for the info Manny. If Mr. Whipple passes, I like the McNulty choice & the decision to bring Kyle Flood with him. I kinda don't like that he passed the first time because of the talent. He could of had the team farther along right now & with the incoming talent? Sigh. I really like those first 2 picks...

Manny how is recruiting coming along? Who are some of the upcoming visits? Who do U think we will land? DeBose?? Randel??

chud still does not have a job in the nfl. come on home chud!!!!

MARVE TRANFERS TO PENN STATE

If Whipple passes, The rutgers coach has a solid resume. Bring in the new O-Lines coach with him..

Any DC or OC should not be some "fly by night" like Bill YOUng who stayed here =what? 2 years?

i like the sound of this. the rutgers coach sound intriguing. i'm curious though, what would compel him to leave rutgers? seems like they are doing as well as we are. are we offering more money? offensive line coach sounds interesting too.

Try one year for Young...

Wow we sound good to go on the OC thing if we get one of those two now DC i think Shannon can do it but he can find someone i know it. College football is mostly about talent not schemes

Schiano runs the same offense that we do here at Miami. I think the Rutgers OC would not be a bad option. I think they have over acheived with their talent. As for leaving, I live about 20 minutes North of their campus. Their stadium is a joke (they are adding to the back end zone) and there is just not enough talent in the Northeast. The Northeast is Basketball Country, not Football country, there are no parks or vacant land up here for pick up games like you find in the south and mid-west... Its pathetic.

Whipple would be great, but McNulty + Flood sounds like a good option as well!

Anny more news on the DC? Anyone from lat year's list that may still be available/interested? Yes, I am that impatient.

He can't handle the HC let alone both, its going to be a long season

Georgia Tech would not have put up 400+ rushing yards on a Randy run defense - CANE FAN

Great observation goober. IT is what it is. U are what U are. If your mom was a man U would be a queer. What's your point doofus? So it sounds like you think the 400+ ( 400+ is a whole lot less than FOUR HUNDRED AND SEVENTY TWO quit sugar coating it fool) shouldn't count. Nice.

Okay then, If randy was dc it wouldn't have happened so we'll just erase that one. Huh? It's in the record books? Oh my bad.

FOUR defensive coordinators in FOUR YEARS but randy say,"we's building depths"

UM is a TURNSTYLE

He can't handle the HC let alone both, its going to be a long season
POsted by: e

Randy is a disaster as the head coach but go ahead and let him take on MORE responsibility. It will probably happen because who in their right mind would want to step into this fiasco??? If he ends up doing both jobs it will seal his fate earlier than expected and he'll NEVER see the end of 09 in UM.

tom olivadotti and kippy brown dont have jobs, why dont you interview them?

Manny,

Since the word on the street is that the OC will be announced this week, I believe that you are correct that McNulty has been offered the job and is considering the job. I love that he may bring his line coach with him because if those hirings are announced this Friday, it may persuade another OL recruit or 2 to sign the LOI with Miami.

This may also seal the deal on Bryce if he sees that he is going to have a line to open holes for him although I believe his decision is going to be heavily influenced by his older brother's opinion of:
the U,
the coaching staff,
quality of personnel and
quality of facilities.

Everybody on this blog realizes that you make your defense better by letting the D rest on the sideline while the opponent's offense loses or fails to find a rhythm while they sit. The only way to do that is to have the OL open holes for the running game and protect the QB when the passing game opens up as the DBs and LBs creep up.

I will concede to the opposing philosophy that if the D is commited to stopping the run from the first snap, you open up the running game by throwing,..., but the bottom line is that we need the OL to make the offense and defense championship caliber.

Great scheming "tranquilizar" What U don't have any clue about is that before ANY Of that works U have to display a basic grasp of EXECUTION. None of your pretty scenario works when you are getting pushed around and don't get 1st downs.

But really dude, U should consult in the NFL or something. U R brilliant

Manny, if we did go with McNulty (which seems to be a good move), and he brings his O-Line coach, what will happen to our current O-Line coach (Stoutland) who is a pretty good recruiter and who has built good repores with our current recruits?....I kow most of teh ones he recruited are already on campus, but just wanted to know your thoughts.

At least four finalists remain for Miami's offensive coordinator position and at least one of them remains a coach in the college ranks.

Sources have told CaneSport that Coach Randy Shannon was at the Senior Bowl in Mobile Tuesday where he interviewed two or three of the finalists and had discussions with several NFL people about his candidates. The identity of those finalists is not known, but CaneSport has confirmed that Philadelphia Eagles offensive assistant Mark Whipple is not a candidate for the job as has been much rumored in recent days.

CaneSport has also confirmed that Rutgers assistant John McNulty, another principal in the rumor mill, is also not a candidate.

So who are the final candidates?

If anybody outside Shannon knows, they aren't saying.

But sources told CaneSport a new offensive coordinator could be named by Friday.

Shannon was reportedly jetting to the west coast on Wednesday to interview at least one more undisclosed finalist who coaches in the Pac 10. Former San Diego State Coach Chuck Long has been a candidate for the job from Day One but is not believed to be in Shannon's Final Four.

Shannon is also now looking for a defensive coordinator in the wake of the departure of Bill Young to Oklahoma State. But it is not known if he also spoke to defensive candidates during his stop in Mobile.

Get Steve Logan!!!!!

marve to penn state?????

Chud are you NOT seeing what's happening here at home. Help us out brother. You got $$$, so come back home and help Randy get the U back where it belongs. Bernie K as the QB coach, and Chud running the O would be a great combo. I know, I'm dreaming, lol.

Love Steve Logan and Mark Whipple. McNulty got a lot of flack from Rutger's fans this year, who thought his offense was basically pretty unamiginative. However, any of the names that have been bantered about are a huge step up from Nix, who was in way over his head.

Belichik is on line one tranquilizar

You confirmed my statement that we all know that it all begins with having our OL pushing the opposing D line around instead of vice versa.

Thank you

How far you have fallen_ yopu are a bonafide disgusting moron. How you actually wake up and put one foot in front of the other is beyond me.

GTech put 400 yds rushing on Georgia, a supposedly "SEC" defense. oooooooh aaaaaahhhh an SEC Defense! UM with its young D-line, decimated lbs and corners, obviuosly got rocked. Bill Young had no answer- Thereofre I am not so sad in seeing him go. Plus, UM's red-zone D was pathetic!

And theses chicken little bloggers just drive me nuts. The end of UM, the end of UM! Well, how quickly all you di-r-ck heads forget that USC had a losing season shortly before Carroll's arrival in 1999, 2000 was barely any better, and by then UM was on its way to a NC, and Um was last ranked in the top 5 not too long ago- 2003. I mean, give it up, you are full of it all of you.

UM will rebound for one reason and one reason alone: So Fl recruiting. best in the nation bar none. Secondary reasons: UF will decline with Teblow and subsequently Urban Liar's deprtures. UM and FSU will rise again and the natural order of things will be restored. It just takes time. Rememeber: 10 years passed between 1991 and 2001. between that there were two coaching changes at the U. It has been 10 years since FSU won an NC. And at least, UM is not:

- Michigan
- Tennessee
- Auburn
- Notre Dame
- Washington
- Washington State

apparently those "tranquilizars" are actually hallucinogens.

U didn't push ANYBODY around except maybe Duke homer.

It won't be any better in 09. The team lacked FUNDAMENTALS in 08 and you'll be starting with new OC AND DC. Which part of this picture eludes U?

Is it that U know UM will dominate because it's all about the U? Swagger baby. Punch em in da mouf. (vomit)

You should get together with that clueless "Dom" and discuss X's & O's. That is if U are not too busy interviewing for NFL vacancies

In response to DA U N Houston,

Give Stoutland an assistand HC and recruiting/player development positiong. BTW, why are Kosar or Dorsey not are QB coach yet?

GTech put 400 yds rushing on Georgia, a supposedly "SEC" defense. oooooooh aaaaaahhhh an SEC Defense! UM with its young D-line, decimated lbs and corners, obviuosly got rocked. Bill Young had no answer- Thereofre I am not so sad in seeing him go. Plus, UM's red-zone D was pathetic!

great post "JAIME" ( that's how the ladies spell it)

so by your ignorant reasoning, UM had a bonafide excuse.

Newsflash goober: UGA sucked too. Nice of you to explain away how pathetic your D is by saying another team sucks. Good work fella. U could work for Randy with those skills.

Let's apply "JAIME" reasoning to some other scenarios:

Cal smoked UCLA and UM. But since they smoked the Bruins, UM's loss didn't mean anything.

UGA s u c k s fool. That doesn't excuse your PATHETIC D but nice job of excusing yourself because a 3rd team s u c k s

U could be Randy's DC or OC. they're both available.

COACH KEHOE.....miss dud; you are the MAN...U ARE UM....

It sounds like RS is doing all the right things in carefully interviewing and considering OC candidates. This is a crucial hire for the program, and he must find the "right fit" for the U. Also, there are competitors out there (just read the coaching carosel at Rivals) willing to steal/hire coaching candidates or set up road blocks. If RS has good candidates in mind, it is best for RS to keep his thoughts close to the vest until a hire can be announced, even though as a fan, I want to know. I don't like the Rutgers coach, McNulty, that turned down the U because of a "lack of talent" on the offensive side - sounds like a guy that is not interested in building the program. RS will have to make an offer today or tomorrow to have an announcement by Friday. I think we Canes fans are all going to be surprised and elated when the new OC is announced.

Lets apply a wee bit more "Jaime" reasoning.

LSU beat the living c r a p out of powerhouse GT. But U conveniently left that one out of the equation you GOOBER.

Stick with American Idol "JAIME". U r puking all over yourself

Comparing the U to USC on ANY level is a joke. USC is COMMITTED to winning and even though they stumble, they are always in the conversation. UM has NO commitment to winning as Donna is dismantling U day by day. (see: clearance rack coaches) U are irrelevant. You should serve a one week blog ban for even mentioning USC and UM in the same post fool.

GET A CLUE

GET A CLUE

Get a life loser!

Bello chick is on line one

I did NOT state that U pushed anybody around.

I stated that any football team that wants to succeed needs to have good OL play.

You & I agree on the needs of the U.

From conversations I've had with our Buzz writer Barry Jackson and other sources, we felt the No. 1 guy on Shannon's OC wish list has been Eagles offensive assistant coach Mark Whipple. - Manny

"...CaneSport has confirmed that Philadelphia Eagles offensive assistant Mark Whipple is not a candidate for the job..."

WOOOOHOOOO Randy. A swing and a miss.

"I've been told the new top candidate is Rutgers offensive coordinator John McNulty." -Manny

CaneSport has also confirmed that Rutgers assistant John McNulty, another principal in the rumor mill, is also not a candidate.

Here comes the pitch. ANOTHER SWING AND A MISS !

Bringing it strong Manny. Three strikes and U are out Randy.

Every time UM does another hire its a comedy of errors. It's actually sad.

Wow...I am sorry but the guy got a job offer for 700k at the start of a depression in this country. He would be an idiot not to leave U. At some taking care of your family is way more important then a few wins on the field. Congratulations Bill Young you made the right move. I wish you could have stayed but your families well being is more important. Good luck and thank you for all your effort. It sure felt like you gave it 110% while you where here and the players responded well to your coaching. This program is not in disarray. We will hire an excellent OC and then Shannon will take over the D and hire an excellent assistant DC. I have no worries. Go Canes!

USC was irrelevant for like 15 years before their recent success, you dumb f*ck. It happens to everyone.

venicecane = giant goober sarasota/canesrule

great work stool. bounce around the blog under different city aliases like U have always done.

"It sure felt like you gave it 110% while you where here and the players responded well to your coaching. " - nominated for dumb homer statement of the year. Young was NEVER in charge of those kids. ((cough::gt::cough))

I'm guessing this guy is around 20-25, fat, lots of pimples, has never kissed a woman, is a virgin, is wearing his Gator lid and championship "t" as we speak, has never attended UF, lives at home with his Mom and his step-dad who used to/still does beat the absolute shyt out of him, has no friends, has imaginary friends, wears dirty tidy whities, does no practice regular hygene, and finally will kill himself and several UM fans when the Gaytors eventually start to lose again!

Now let's have some fun with this, how would you describe Kehoe/canesrule? Let's have a contest! No prize, just the satisfaction of knowing that you nailed this guy's personality type! I will pick a winner when Mann launches a new blog! Be creative! Have fun with it!

I laugh at you Steamer!

YOU ARE THE BIGGEST LOSER ON THE WEB! NO ONE WANTS TO PLAY WITH YOU! TAKE YOUR CRYSTAL BALL AND GO HOME! OH WAIT, DON'T GO THERE, YOUR STEP-DAD WILL WHIP YOU AGAIN!

Go 'canes!!

great post sarasotacanesrule.

U are getting sadder with each post.

Great job of discussing UM . Clearly that steamer guy is WAY up in your .....head.

BWAHAAHAAA u fool

all the names being thrown out there for OC, what about Steve Logan from BC?

BWAHAAHAAA u fool

Posted by: Homesteadcane | January 21, 2009 at 11:01 AM

What is "BWAHAAHAAA"? What are you an evil professor? Internet nerd.

Shannon takes over as DC, then take the dough we were paying Young add it to what we were paying Nix and get the best person on the planet to coach these allegedly super athletes.

Is McNulty more pass or run?? Does he run a pro set?

Posted by: andtheman | January 21, 2009 at 01:59 AM

LMAO!!! What does this tell U?

"As for McNulty, Rutgers set school records for total offense (5,841 yards), points scored (421) and first downs in his first full season in 2007. The Knights also became the first Bowl Subdivision team to boast a 3,000-yard passer, a 2,000-yard rusher and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same year."

I would guess he is more balanced than anything. And spreads the ball around to more than one WR.

What is "BWAHAAHAAA"? What are you an evil professor? Internet nerd.

Posted by: Kenny D | January 21, 2009 at 11:05 AM

Being a Nerd is the least of Kehoe's problems! Brown streaks in his panties, now that's a real problem! Never EVER kissing a girl, now that's a real problem! Constant beat downs by Mom and the guy who happens to be "plowing" her at the moment, now that's a real problem!

Did Kehoe actually imply that he "discusses" UM football?? As if he's just "one of the guy's" on OUR blog?? What a joke, bordering on insanity! Biggest loser on the web, BAR NONE!

What kind of mullet do you think Kehoe sports?

I AM LAUGHING AT YOU! I HAVE NEVER MET A LOSER LIKE YOU IN REAL LIFE! TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION!

Go 'canes!

First of all Naples Cane its Venice, Ca. and I have no idea who think I am.
And if he was the DC he was in charge of those kids and running the D so why jump down my throat for supporting a coach that did a great job considering what he had to work with in terms of veterans and taking f%$#@$%ing true freshman and turning them into starters. He also coached up a freshman all American.
You are a jack ass if you think he should have stayed at Miami for 250k less a year. He coaches 4 years at OKST and it’s an extra million in his pocket.
Next question to you is how many of Miami’s NC games have you attended? Probably 0. Because you couldn’t take the metro rail to the rose bowl in 2001 and your crack hor mom hadn’t got knocked up yet in 83. Next question?

Making money. The U netted 4.5 million this season, thanks to Dolphin stadium.

That's good. That's up from the day's at the OB which in great attendance days was a break-even proposition at best. So, even with our attendance down this season we netted 4.5 mil. That's good news.

I'd rather be in the OB for traditions sake, but the money is going to be important.

Listen to this;

- the top "State schools" in the country are stating to paying their Coordinators at or close to 7 fig.'s. Boys and girls, that's going to be tough to compete with in the not to distant future.

We are a private school and even with some of the "huge bucks" in private money we get for our program/coaches, we won't be able to compete for or to keep some the "best" coordinators in the future. Unless we continue these great recruiting classes.

- This is why

"the U's" mystique,
recruiting,
Randy Shannon
and Dolphin stadium,

- are so important to this program. With continued "quality" recruiting and positive revenue from DS, there will always be the opportunity to snag some of the best coordinators, even if for just a 3 to 5 yr period. Which quite frankly, a 3 to 5 yr period is the norm nationally anyway.

So I guess we can complain about the stadium - but it's making us money. And to say the distance is too far (from south miami), try going to a SEC game some time and see how many RV's there are. You would be blown away.

Or we can complain about Shannon as a HC. But he has always had the best recruits in the country come here. As a DC, they were the only talent we had in the last couple of yrs.

And where are they now - you ask?

They're making an impact in the NFL. Some of those would be 1st round picks this draft, but they were last yr and the yr before.

The CanesFuture looks bright.

thanks jersey cane.

Manny: Rip Scherer was hired away from the Cleveland Browns by the Carolina Panthers two days ago as QB coach. We can take him off the candidate list (Thank god) because I doubt he would have accepted the new job if he were a true candidate. He would be as bad of a hire as Nix...trust me on this. His offense is VANILLA and I witnessed it in person at University of Memphis for 4 years.

McNulty sounds like the real deal. He would be a great snag. Right up their with the others.
Although, he lacks NFL experience, I don't think that's all it's cooked up to be. May be a little help in recruiting, very little. Chudzinski didn't have pro experience, except for maybe a player, before coming back to THE U.

So, this guy would be a keeper. Look what he did with Rutgers, short on talent but well coached. Especially the OL.

How far U have fallen - Kehoe cries alone,

You can release your lip lock on Kehoe's crotch now.

Who calls someone a goober. kehoe how we seem to forget how U called randy a felon and then vanished from the blog after every one proved him wrong. Kehoe they same guy who gets love from his his own gayturd fan base.. Goober lol a kehoe its a little cold out today make sure U bring out the blanket. I don't want freezing in Ur mama's basement. Nobody cares about how u feel about president or our ad or our coach. Ur points are falling on Deaf ears. tThe conversations that U continue to have with yourself on this and other blobs tells me that U need help and need it fast. The fact of the matter is kehoe Miami is just fine so continue with ur goober and foamy commits cu, the whole internet world is Laughing at U. What a loser!

U thought u seen the bottom kehoe. lol not even close when ur mom cuts off the internet because u been bad then u well hurt.
