What we're hearing: The OC search

Is there any news on the offensive coordinator front? Do we know who has been interviewed or contacted?

In short, my answer is no. I have nothing concrete from anyone at UM. Randy Shannon has always been somebody who keep his thoughts close to the vest. What I do know is the vacancy could be filled by Friday. Here is what I'm hearing in terms of candidates along with what is being reported by others across the country.

Eagles assistant Mark Whipple (left) watches Ben Roethlisberger throw the ball in 2006. > From conversations I've had with sources, the No. 1 guy on Shannon's OC wish list has been Eagles offensive assistant coach Mark Whipple. The former coach at UMass won a I-AA national title and has a Super Bowl ring as Ben Roethlisberger's position coach in 2006.  Whipple, 50, has spent his entire coaching career in the Northeast (except for one season with the Arizona Wranglers of the USFL in 1984). That reason, and because he's now been in the NFL since 2004 (once you move up you rarely see guys move back down to college) makes me believe he'll likely pass -- or has passed -- on the job. Also of note, an early morning report Wednesday out of Philadelphia said Eagles quarterbacks coach Mark Shurmur is leaving for the Rams offensive coordinator job. Whipple could become his replacement in Philly.

> I've been told the new top candidate is Rutgers offensive coordinator John McNulty. I received a phone call Tuesday night from a friend very deeply connected in the coaching circles who said McNulty has been offered the job at Miami and is now mulling it over. McNulty, 40, previously interviewed for the UM job in 2007. He passed and returned to Rutgers with a pay raise. Last year, McNulty interviewed with Nick Saban at Alabama and returned to Rutgers again.

Rutgers offensive coordinator John McNulty is believed to be one of UM's top choices for its vacant offensive coordinator position.. From what I was told, McNulty passed on the UM job the first go around because of the lack of talent on the offensive side of the football. Now, he likes what he sees (except for the offensive line). McNulty apparently would like to bring assistant coach Kyle Flood with him. Rutgers gave up the fewest sacks in the nation under Flood in 2007 and 2006. As for McNulty, Rutgers set school records for total offense (5,841 yards), points scored (421) and first downs in his first full season in 2007. The Knights also became the first Bowl Subdivision team to boast a 3,000-yard passer, a 2,000-yard rusher and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same year.

> Other names have popped up aside from those two. The ones who might appear to have some substance are former Minnesota and Syracuse offensive coordinator Mitch Browning, Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer, former San Diego State coach Chuck Long and Ron Prince, formerly of Kansas State. Long told The Miamih Herald he has had no contact with UM. Browning is apparently considering joining Lane Kiffin's new staff at Tennessee and Prince will likely end up in the NFL. Scherer signed a deal to be the quarterbacks coach with the Carolina Panthers Tuesday.

Belchick and all you other L-osers: What is ist that your puny brains can't comprehend? Compare UM's and USC's records in the last 10 years. Then go back, 15, 20, 25, 30, and even 35 years. YOU will see, my stoopid, little punk bee-h-es, that UM's record is better. By far than USC's. Go ahead do it. USC has a better winning record and percentage in the last 9 years- will give you that much. BUT NOT BY MUCH!

My point is, you silly little nin-com-poops, that all you nay sayers have such short term memory problems, that you forget, that a. USC was in a horrendous down trun until 2000. So was Ohio State, by the way. So comparing USC with UM is not only viable, but easy (if you have half a brain. But because U haters like you deekheads cannot see anything good about the U, and you actively wish ill upon the U out of jealousy, let me remind you also, that UM has more NCs in the 3 major sports (fb, bb, baseball) than USC, Oh. ST, or UF. Period. Roll the credits.

And for the dum-a$ who so intelligently reminded me that LSU beat GT inthe bowl, you missed the point j-k off. I was simply reminding you that the triple option that GT runs is very difficult to stop. Tell that to another very good defense: FSU.

So you little anti-UM boys- go home to yo mommies. I think you dirtied your diapers. I can smell the stench from here.

Hey Canes, your head coach Randy Shannon has a longer rap sheet than any of our players: Felony burglary, Resisting Arrest, Theft, etc. Take your holier than thou crap somewhere else!

Bryce see's what McNulty and Flood did for Rice.

Case closed - Done Deal . . . maybe?

Search for Randy Shannon under defendant's name and you might be surprised. And, if you think it's not him then check the birth date. Your coach is a former felon.

It's really not a surprise, this has been well documented in stories about his life, but UM fans don't even know anything about their head coach, let alone UF. I have no problem with second chances, but don't spout off about our players when your coach has skeletons in his closet.

My responses to Belchik were censored by the herald, despite the fact that there are worse things posted.

It has been said a million times that his brother stole his identity and was guilty of all that, you dumb sh*t. As usual, you know nothing.

"the U's" mystique,...." - canes future

dude. seriously get off the crack pipe.

Georgia Tech doesn't really see the "mystique" nor does Virginia

Keep believing that ancient foolishness.

miamiboisince85,jamie,sarasotacane: THANK U this guy has been posting hate for the the past two 2days,since the bill young posts came up. he has been on here all day and nite. as soon as i come get off from work i see the hate posts this kid really has no life he needs to get a woman or something. like i said the other day all this hate U doing isn't going to turn over the UM faithful buddy , it is funny to see how hard U try to make a point and it is literaly not going anywhere BUT KEEP TRYING KEHOEE OR ALL THE OTHER ALIAS U HAVE.

These low life gator fans are so insecure about their future that they have no way of knowing how to handle it. Here's a clue - handle just like you stools handled it for decades in the past, losers, just losers.

Randy Shannon's brother stole his identity and got into some trouble. How people do not know this when it has been very well documented during nationally televised games is beyond me. That is why there is a link with "AKA" on the clerk's web site next to the name.

Bitter, angry, and jealous! Who would have guessed that Kehoe's team had just won the NC?

GATOR NATION IS NOT A SOVEREIGN STATE

THE 'CANES DO MORE WITH SO MUCH LESS

Go 'canes!

canes 09. U might want to calm down im arguing a point with a gaytor fan kehoe also known as the um blog stalker. Calm down i know randys is not a felon. o and u can go see it for ur self on the gator post.

Ummm...thanks for jacking my name and then apologizing for me.

WOW! What a wild day this is for the Gay-tor fans. They are in a panic.

This is very good news for the Canes, the Gay-tor fans - really sense that their future is bleak.

They finally got it!

UM's recruiting soars and Gay-tor football plummets to the depths of nothingness - again.

Can't wait! The next decade of Canes football will be dominate, AGAIN!

Kehoe usually likes to blow up the Sentinel blog, but that blog has not been working correctly for several days, so I guess we get him for a couple! I love his line about us being afraid to discuss UM football!

When Randy rounds up his players and heads over to one of UM's frat houses to start a fight (Remember Ron Zook?), then I will start to worry!

The fact is the history of UF football is a joke! We gave up 472 to GT, that's a bad day, the Gators could not win their conference for over 50 years, that's a bad 5 decades! 5 decades! 5 decades! Think about that, 5 decades!

Never stringing together an un-defeated season is bad, but not winning your conference after 50 years of trying is...is...Hell I don't know what it is! It is the most glaring failures in the history of Florida football, college and pro's! This failure is on par with the Tampa Bay Buc's winless season!

Does everyone realize that The U had 4 NC's before the Gaytors won their 1st conference title? What's up with that????? That is one of the most colassal failures in state history! Don't get me started about the "flop" game! Disgraceful! And the fan's, OH MY...

Go 'canes!

CANES RATED MORE PRESTIGIOUS THAN UF BY ESPN:

Just read the following article on ESPN:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3846725

Since UF is rated #15 and the Canes have yet to appear on the prestige rankings (ESPN is releasing them in groups of 5 from bottom to top), it follows that the Canes are in the Top 10, maybe even in the top 5.

SO TAKE THAT GAYTOR NATION!!! YOU'RE NOT EVEN IN THE TOP 10!!!

#s 1-10 should be announced in the next couple of days, right in time for a weekend loaded with recruits visiting the U!!!

ALL ABOUT THE [|_|] !!! GO CANES!!!

Hmm, I am glad to see that the loss of Young is not a crisis.

Randy had BETTER get a good OC though.

I would not move up someone internally though for DC, because Barrow and the others did not move up last year and did not improve in the past year.

The thing about hiring coordinators is hoping they stay around longer than a couple of years. RS himself said so when he first became HC and named the OC/DC. Both were young, and he hoped they could grow with the program.

I loved Bill Young and wish him nothing but the best, but I always feared he'd only be here for a short time...enough time to right the ship with the defense, improve his resume, and head to the next gig. I know the defense isn't quite there yet, but he's had short stints recently, so the fans should not be surprised.

I fear the same thing with the OC. Given where we are, and RS's desire to get someone with NFL experience, if who ever takes this job really turns things around, he'll probably be out of here in a couple of years himself.

At this point...you can only do one thing at a time...finish up with the OC search and hope we have him for 3 years. I also hope RS finds a D-coordinator b/c I'm not a big fan of the HC handling the play-calling on either side of the ball...especially since this team is still in the growing/learning stages.

Most of Florida's success has come in the past 20 years. When using the eras before the BCS was created, Florida never finished higher than 27th in any of them. Through 1958, Florida was buried in the bottom half of the nation, behind schools such as Indiana, Vanderbilt and Rutgers. The Gators didn't win a bowl game in the '70s at all.

any potential coordinator doesn't care what you did many years ago. They are more interested in the current state of the program.
The current state is FLAMING DISASTER

Ah ha, Gators, you've been dumped by Greg Reid. With him falling asleep at the basketball was a give away.

Can U say COOKIE?!

Through the decades: Through 1958: T-80th | 1968: 51st | 1978: 44th | 1988: 43rd | 1998: 20th

WOW! I thought not winning your conference for 50 years was bad, but never being ranked in the top 25 for 50 years, and never going to a bowl for an ENTIRE decade in the modern era is worse!

randy's speaking engagement got postponed

good job and not speaking about u being a dimwit.

I"M done talking to a known loser.

Onto serious matters.

Losing young may not be that bad. His red zone defense last year had alot to be desired. Im more concerned about the kids learning to many different schemes. Stability at the coordinator position is something randy was preaching when he first got the job and im pretty sure thats what he wants but we got to get coordinators who are going to do right by these kids and stay long.( unlees they do so good that an nfl team might want them.)

would not move up someone internally though for DC, because Barrow and the others did not move up last year and did not improve in the past year.

Randy has stated that barrow and hurtt are not ready to be DC's, so its a safe bet that there are not looking to promote from within.

'DanMullensHairPiece' is an idiot. 'Canes', thanks for setting the record straight. In practically ever article written about Shannon, there is a section that addresses the problem's his brother hand and the way it complicated Randy's day to day life. 'DanMullensHairPiece' is such a liar that he would lack the integrity to play on Shannon's team (not to mention the skill or aptitude).

"boi" is what queers say

but it looks cool when you use it

Finally, some fair coverage on Shannon and transfers:

I don't know about that last 20 years stuff. They won in 1996 and then went back to mediocrity up until 2006 and 2008.

Many bloggers on this site act as if replacing a coordinator is a reason to panic. Rivals.com "Coordinator Carosel" lists 46 schools that have either replaced or is in the process of replacing coordinators, with Univ. South Florida being the latest school to join the list when Coach Levitt fired Greg Gregory.

Sure it's fair. But it doesn't mean he isn't a raging disaster. The kid screwed up got the boot and deserved it. SO WHAT. The handling of Marve was nothing short of vindictive from Mr. Integrity.

But under it all we know that Randy is a master at communicating effectively. ( just threw up my panini from laughing too hard)

Poor Caniac. Everyone is out to get Randy. Maybe the TORRENT of criticism has something to do with his disastrous handling of so many team aspects.

Even lifelong U fans agree that this guy is a disaster.

Q: What's the difference between Randy Shannon and a raging dumpster fire?

A: The dumpster

We are all laughing at you Kehoe!

UNRANKED FOR 50 YEARS

NO CONFERENCE TITLES IN 50 YEARS

BITTER, ANGRY, JEALOUS: COME ON GAYTORS, GET UP, AND GO!

Go canes!

Scary things coming out of South Florida. You hear one bad thing that is soon followed by people jumping from the ship. What is going on down there? Is the program falling apart in front of our eyes?

Mr. Clueless, you are a scary torrent of stupidity. I don't think Shannon handled the Marve situation as well as he should have, but thanks for assuming you know me and my stance. When you are presumptive and ignorant, you just come out looking ridiculous. Like a stupid drama queen exaggerating away to gain attention. Congratulations on that, mission accomplished (see the big banner behind you on the aircraft carrier).

I was just pointing out some fairer coverage of Shannon and how he deals with people who break rules. Not everyone is upset with what he did...or the fact that he doesn't bend the rules left and right.

Oh, and by the way, I am a lifelong Cane fan and I don't believe Shannon is a disaster. Certainly, I have my qualms with him...but I don't have full information so I am not going to get ahead of myself and jump to conclusions about the decisions he makes. If anyone is a disaster, it is clearly you.

How is the program falling apart? I just don't get some of U people. At least U all are good for a laugh.

The program is fine.

GO CANES!!!

No Bart, just a few people getting ahead of themselves and painfully trying to be funny. We could all do without people trying to start fires and making bad jokes.
