Whipple introduces himself, talks titles

Mark Whipple addresses the media Tuesday afternoon inside the Edgerrin James room on the UM campus.
New offensive coordinator Mark Whipple just finished his half hour press conference introducing himself to the media Tuesday afternoon. I have a few quick notes I wanted to share relating to what he talked about. For those of you who would like to listen to the entire press conference, just click on the link.

> For starters, credit the hire of Whipple to coach Randy Shannon (who much like in what he does with recruits) had a great one-on-one session with Whipple and helped convince him he really was ready to come back and be a playcaller on the college level. Eagles coach Andy Reid obviously talked to Whipple about becoming the team's quarterbacks coach. But even Reid realized Whipple was ready to come back to college and call plays. It seemed the two knew Miami was where Whipple needed to be. Whipple said he first started receiving inquires in his interest at UM about three weeks ago from others close to the program down here.

"The thing I missed a little bit in the NFL was teaching and seeing people get better," Whipple said. "I think I have a lot to give this place and kids in general."

> Whipple will be more than just the offensive coordinator. He was hired and given the title of assistant head coach. That could very well mean Shannon has decided to take on the role of defensive coordinator.Nothing official, however, regarding Shannon's move to defensive coordinator was told to us by Whipple or any other sports information staff members.

Mark Whipple2 > Whipple played his high school ball in Arizona and has spent most of his life in the northeast, but that doesn't mean he's not familiar with South Florida or the Canes. As a recruiter he said he spent a lot of time in Miami and Broward. He said the tradition of the Hurricanes has always intrigued him. He was actually at the Fiesta Bowl for UM's two national championship losses to Penn State (1986) and Ohio State (2002). He shared a story about how he spoke with Tom Brady at the Pro Bowl about the talented players coming out of UM -- including receiver Andre Johnson.

> How long Whipple sticks around UM remains to be seen. But there is no question he has aspirations of being an NFL head coach one day. He didn't tell reporters how much money he's being paid or how long his contract is for. But he talked plenty about winning championships. Whipple has obviously done a lot of it in his career with a I-AA title at UMass in 1998 and a Super Bowl title with the Steelers.

"To me it's about being the best," Whipple said. "I believe in saying, no one rises to low expectations. If you are playing for runner-up, you'll probably finish third. If you play for No. 1, it's probably the only way you'll be No. 1. You walk into Pittsburgh, you see the four Lombardi trophies you know what it's about. You walk into UM, you see the five national titles. You know what it's about. This is what I'm about."

> As for the type of offense he would like to run, Whipple said it will all depend on personnel. He said he watched tape of three UM games: FSU, Virginia and Cal and has some early impressions. He also got to know players a little during a team workout. But he's got to see what they can do on the field before deciding how he's going to run his offense: "Brian Westbrook is different than Jerome Bettis. Hines Ward is not the same as Desean Jackson," Whipple said. "It's a little bit of a mix and match. I got to see what our players are like. Do we have guys that can pull [block]? What are our quarterbacks like? What is Jacory comfortable with? To me, it's not what I like. I have an arsenal of plays.  To me it's what you put up on the board. I've always had a good relationship with the players. I want to put guys in the best positions they can be in. I think its going to be a little bit of what Pittsburgh does with Hines Ward. It's going to be a little bit of what Arizona does with what I did with Whisenhunt. It's not how much I know, it's what our guys know. I learned you can always challenge guys more. I'm trying to make this place the best classroom they have. I want to make their football class the greatest classroom they have."

> UM released a few other quotes from folks in the NFL talking about Whipple. Here they are.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid: “On behalf of the Philadelphia Eagles, I wish Mark and his family all the best in Miami and thank him for all of his contributions to the Eagles during this past year. He is an excellent football coach and has proven that on both the college and pro levels. He has a great opportunity in Miami and I’m sure he’ll be very successful with that program. He is a great addition to the University of Miami and will help them continue their high standard of football and academics.”

Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger: "Whip is a great coach and is the perfect fit for any coaching position at any school or team. I know he will do great things at Miami and help that program tremendously. He will help the players not just as a coach, but as a leader and a mentor to them. I have nothing but the upmost respect for Whip and what he stands for."

Former Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Bill Cowher: “Mark Whipple was without a doubt instrumental in the development of Ben Roethlisberger. He has a wealth of experience on the offensive side and is a great teacher and leader of young men.”

Here's a nice article from Stewart Mandel about Miami. What's funny is there is a "Truth and Rumors" piece on SI.com's college page that says Miami is losing recruits! What a joke!

Go 'canes!

Good moves:
a. Recruiting lineman.
b. Hiring an OC with NFL experience - Offense sells tickets, and defense wins championships
c. If Shannon takes over the Defense - The D' needs to be more consistent. The tackling on the edges has to be better.
d. If they can get a strong running game to complement Jacory it would be great. Remember, the Baltimore Ravens had offensive sets that included six(6) linemen. That is an example of "imposing your will" on a team. Hell, if Miami wants to run the ball, they should put in 8 linemen in a game. That is about toughness.

WHIPPLE HEADED TO WICHITA FOR BROWN VISIT

Landing Wichita (KS) East High School RB Bryce Brown is a huge priority for the Hurricanes.

And new coordinator Mark Whipple's first stop will be in Wichita tonight to meet with Brown's father as well as the Brown family advisor, Brian Butler.

Bryce, who remains a UM commitment, will not be at the meeting - he is on vacation in Nebraska with his uncle. And Butler says he doesn't expect Bryce to have a face-to-face meeting with Whipple until he takes a visit to UM, assuming he does that at some point. Butler says it is a 100 percent certainty that Brown will not be signing anywhere on signing day.

"I have no clue when he'll sign," Butler said. "We have to make those decisions."

Butler says he already knows the questions he wants answered by Whipple tonight.

"Offensively, what is his plan?" Butler said. "What has he done? We need some X's and O's and plans of how he's going to use Bryce. Has he had a chance to watch Bryce and know what his skill set is? How has he used guys in the past and what is his philosophy? We don't want him to come up with anything brand new, just see what he's done at previous places. We want to see what he brings to the table and what he does, not gearing it toward Bryce but what he's done in previous places."

Butler says he was unaware that Whipple coached NFL tailback Marcel Shipp while at Massachusetts.

"Those are the kind of things I want to find out about," Butler said. "If he says `Here's a guy I had, here's how many times he ran it, caught it,' real factual numbers, that is what we're concerned with. And just seeing his philosophies on paper and what he'll do with the skill set that Bryce has."

Butler says the plan is for Bryce to talk on the phone with Whipple during the meeting.

And Butler spoke about just how important tonight will be in UM's efforts to land the nation's No. 1 player.

"It's a meeting that we've been looking forward to, and Bryce has said all along that the offensive coordinator is going to be a very critical part of his decision," Butler said. "So just the opportunity to make first impressions is very important, and this is a first impression that will be monumental whether positive or negative."

This Butler guy sounds like an agent. I wish he wasn't part of the Bryce Brown recruiting process. As far as vacation without meeting the new OC face to face - primadonna.

Florida Gators 2008 Nat'l Champions!!! UM played in the Micro-dot PC Southwest Sunshine Expo Bowl and lost to Cal. HA!!! I think Mr. Whipple might bring you back to the Top. Top 50 that is. With Randy "Cry baby" Shannon at the helm, the U is in for some rough times. Looking forward to another .500 season for Miami. Let's talk again next year. The U is a joke!!!

Lets see old urban sustain it. When the canes R on top, we sustain in for 5-10 yr periods. Urb has thrown a 3 and 4 loss season in between, and their 1st NC yr, they were lucky they didnt lose 4-5 that yr. We are so close gents, so close. We just need an O to get us over the hump. those 12 games that we had a chance in the 4th qtr that were losses, with a good O plan, they become wins. we have close to enough more talent than all the major schools now, ours is just fresh and sophomores. We get some direction and we can be awesome. We turned it around in 2000 again with a true soph qb, dorsey, and we can turn it around in 09, with a true soph jacory. We have unbelievable talent on D, and with a great 0, you are looking at an unstoppable team in the near future. GOOD LUCK WHIP----Close the deal on bryce and lets get that kid Richardson from missouri signed next week. Canes are on the way back baby!!!!

(IR)rational thinker- Yeah and it wasnt 2 years ago that the gayturds played Michigan in the home turf of the Gaytord bowl and got whooped. See, gayturd, facts are little stubborn things, like the fact that UM is 3-1 against the gayturds and 7-4 against the semenholes the last time they all played. Period. Shut up. roll the credits.

.

Myself and others have support BB through this whole thing, and I still, do, do what's best for you....but this whole "he'll call in for the meeting"..."Butler will report to him"....its getting a little out of control....when AP (Adrian Peterson) was the #1 recruit (and probably the best RB's ranked #1 hands down) none of this was even thought of......I think Pryor messed up the whole system, and now you have this.....Don't get me wrong, BB is the truth and looks like he can be the man.....but Mr. Butler, lets keep this in perspective this is a highschool student athelete, things happen, this might not be the best way about going about this......In My Opinion!

Who the heck is Brian Butler, Bryce Bruce's advisor?????
What qualifies him to ask Whipple these questions?
He didn't even know that Whipple is a former head coach. Doesn't he do any research?
Is he going to have the phone number to Randy's and Whipple's game day headset for the next 4 years?

Is anyone hearing rumors that Tommy Tuberville is considering taking the DC job? I would be SHOCKED if Tommy Tuberville agrees to the the DC here.

The U is back...to the land of mediocrity. Based on most of the Miami fans dictation, I would guess that they didn't attend the U. Or even Community College. Most likely, their one parent house hold set up a trailer somewhere near the stadium. And now they're fans.
The same stadium that is half full on Saturdays, has a baseball diamond on it and is shared with two other pro teams. Please don't talk until you can actually sell out a game. Florida sells out every one...every one!!
It's hilarious to see Miami fans try to discredit UF's championships. I guess the sports writers and media got it all wrong when they voted UF Nat'l champions in both polls. Face it, two titles in 3 years. Two basketball titles as well. That's a Titletown.
The way you talk about your 5 championships is like the guy who brags about his wife that's now 300lbs and has six chins. "You should have seen her in high school, hottest girl ever.." But that was 20 years ago!!! Now she is fat and now Miami is mediocre.

Let's talk again when UM is .500 next year and UF is a top 5 team.

So put some more gel in your hair, starch those wife beaters, add another gold chain around your neck, apply for some more gov't assistance, half fill your stadium and get ready for another disappointing year.

Are there any UM fans that actually went to the school????

I'll be back to check on you.

PS...you guys didn't even sniff the redzone in the UF game. Ha, Ha Ha!!!

UM is in for another terrible year.

"Rational Thinker"

Gator fan is scared. Now that Randy has south Florida locked down and Meyer can't get anyone from down there. Randy is even getting Gaytorland recruits, deal with it!! Your little run is over. Even Washington had a run, and you are gonna end up where they are now.

I have been observing this process of oc and rs has made a good choice. Some of the comments about rs have been unfair. Marve is a student first and at a private school or any college you must attend class. What's so difficult about that. He knew the rules of the team and the U. Their is no I in TEAM.

Without calling out any names, I’m sick and tired of all the negative nanzy pansies UM fans. Fire Shannon (he doesn’t always speak correct English), Coop is a bum, JJ isn’t half has good as Edge, DVD, and Grant can’t cover, I could go on but you get the point. Well I’m here today to forever be the optimist.

My Question to U; besides me, how many of you before any Cane game believe that Miami will win? It might be that I’m an 80’s baby, but I was raised on Hurricane Football Dominance.

With the new OC cracking the Whip and developing our young talent this is my prediction for the upcoming 09’ season.

Jacory (notice he has already earned the first name mention, i.e. Michael) will be more Vinny Testeverde than Ryan Clement. Coop will be more Portis than Jason Geathers, JJ will be more Edge than James Jackson. AJ will be more Andre Johnson than Reggie Wayne, T. Benjamin will be more Santana Moss than Sinorice Moss, Tommy Streeter will be more Winslow than Ryan Moore… One thing is lacking from the Offensive side, yes it’s the Line but to be specific The U is missing a center, the QB of the O-Line. The great teams of the past always had a smaller but quick and smart center; K.C. Jones is one example. Until the O-line can find a leader there will be a problems for the O. A.J. trump I’m putting it on you to be that 280lb center that knows where he and the four other hogs need to be and how to block there man.

Now to the D…
The D is in good shape, The secondary will be much improved from last year. I and all Cane fans need to believe in the seniors as much as the freshman, Randy Phillps and Ryan Hill big expectations are in front of you. Leadership on and off the field is huge, We are all counting on the freshman and sophomores but with out the 22 year olds pulling there weight Cane Dominance will be 2 years away.

Allen Bailey will be more Calais Campbell sophomore year than Calais Campbell Junior year.. Fortson will be more Cortez Kennedy than Damion Lewis, Arthur Brown will be more Ray Lewis than Glenn Cook. Sean Spence will continue to be Sean Spence.

I could go on, but how many are gonna read a full page?

So My prediction for 09, Forever the Optimist. The Game of the year will be the last game against USF (who has all there key players returning) Miami going in undefeated and USF with that easy conference going in with one loss but able to secure an Orange Bowl bid for the Big East.

As soon as all these canes The 22 year olds down to the 18 year olds believe that EVERY PLAY, EVERY GAME, when they line up they KNOW that they will be better than the man across from them. When all 11 come together with that mind set Hurricane Football Dominance will return.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fYQ6nm_l5o

I totally agree jimmiecane, your starting quarterback needs to be a leader and set an example for the rest of the team. Jacory is obviously the leader of this team and understands it's about the U and not you. Everyone is accountable for their actions but Marve thought he was above it. Now he's gone and Whip can give the keys to Jacory to drive us to the NC.

SHELDON RICHARDSON ON MAKING HIS COLLEGE CHOICE! IS HE REALLY VISITING THE U?

“Well my father is just leaving the decision up to me and my mother wants me to stay close to home, My brother said it depends on what position I want to play, if I want to play tight end I could play tight end in Miami because Miami would be a better fit. I just don't know yet what position I want to play so that's what else makes the decision so hard because my body weight fluctuates up and down.”

“They are still recruiting me, so we’ll see,” the defensive tackle from Gateway Tech said this week. “I’m down to two — Miami and Missouri. I said I was done for a minute, and then I saw they’re still coming after me. We’ll see if I visit. I’m talking to my father about that. We’ll see.”

MARK WHIPPLE AND BRYCE BROWN

It'll be fascinating to see if Whipple has an impact on whether Miami can keep top RB recruit Bryce Brown. The Kansas back, who is widely considered the top back in this recruiting class, is expected to hold off on announcing his college choice until after signing day.

Whipple's first stop is to Wichita to recruit Brown, although the running back won't actually be there. (He already graduated from high school and will be in Nebraska with an uncle on vacation.) But Whipple will meet with Brown's father and Brian Butler, his mentor. Butler, who will conference Brown in via phone, apparently wants to sit down with the new Canes offensive coach and hear a detailed plan of how Miami will use the running back and get a better understanding of his offensive philosophies.

Are there any UM fans that actually went to the school????

"Rational Thinker"

I have lots of friends that are Gator fans. None of which went to UF. I guess they too should not be fans of their chosen college team?

More like "Irrational Thinker"

The thing about Martinez is that I talked to a couple of Dawgs fans and students and they would be more than happy to let him go.

Thats not really saying much about him.

Bring back Mark Stoops if anything, or just let Randy handle the DC duties. After all, Whip is assistant HC anyway.

RATIONAL THINKER: A LOT OF US CANES FANS ARE IVY-LEAGUE EDUCATED, FYI, WHICH TRUMPS THE FARMING 101 THEY TEACH IN GAINESVILLE. WE'RE CANES FAN BECAUSE WE LIVE OR GREW UP IN MIAMI - THE REAL TITLETOWN: 5 COLLEGE FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, 2 WORLD SERIES TITLES, 2 SUPER BOWLS, AND AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP, NOT TO MENTION MULTIPLE HIGH SCHOOL STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS (AND #1 RANKINGS AT NATIONAL LEVEL) AND COLLEGE BASEBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

IF YOU'RE SO RATIONAL, WHAT THE F ARE YOU DOING ON A CANES BLOG? GET A LIFE YOU MORON! GO F SOME SHEEP OR PLANT A BEANSTALK. OR BETTER YET, WHY DON'T YOU GO AND CIRCUMCISE SOME ASIAN DONKEYS OR SOMETHING.

GAINESVILLE WILL NEVER BE MIAMI -- NOT EVEN CLOSE -- AND UF WILL NEVER BE "THE [|_|]."

GO CANES!!!

IT STILL IS, AND ALWAYS WILL BE, ALL ABOUT THE [|_|] !!!

Tahaj Boyd choose Clemson over Oregon....guess him and BB weren't as comitted as going to the same school as was reported earlier...

The U is back...to the land of mediocrity. Based on most of the Miami fans dictation, I would guess that they didn't attend the U. Or even Community College. Most likely, their one parent house hold set up a trailer somewhere near the stadium. And now they're fans.

===============================================

Did we go to UM??? Did you even finish High School??? Try learning to spell for starters! Also, learn when to use the words: "their", or "there", or "they're". Did your probation officer, I mean "teacher", ever go over sentence structure, paragraph construction, etc.???

As much as I hate UF, I can say with certainty that you did not go "there"! Unless of course you were on the football team!

Go 'canes!!

I'd like to thank the Gators for keeping our throne warm with their little gimmic, no chance to go pro offense. Now it's time for us to claim our rightful place on said throne. Florida can go back to their other throne which is the toilet of college football.

Canes' are back baby!!

From CollegeFootballTalk.com:

"Gator running back Jeff Demps recovering nicely after undergoing surgery on his groin."

....looks like vaginal problems.

Shhhh..it's quiet when I mention the Canes can only fill half their stadium. Shhh..very quiet. Whoops...not really even 'your' stadium. I guess you kinda rent it out. What a joke. Real programs have their own stadiums on their own campuses. And real programs can actually sell out their games. Great fan support Miami. But what can you expect from a city that doesn't support the Marlins or Heat.

PS...Florida has won more games than any team since 1990. How's that for consistency.

And yes, I do think that you are more of a fan if you actually attended the school. (Paid tuition, went to class, participated in events on campus and graduated.)

Eddy Rios was arrested today on 2 counts of 3rd Degree Grand Theft and 2 counts Burglary of an Unocupied Dwelling...

I guess that UF edumacation cant get this guy to figure out that UF is a public school and gets funds from the state,as where Miami is a private school and only gets money from boosters and alum.

Thats why we dont have our owb stadium genius

I know that these kids are just 17-18 yrs old, But BB need to stop with the drama. He don't know Randy, RS will have a back-up for BB, we have two backs already. So, BB let's get with the program and you need to enroll in classes. But I guess he want to string us along.

Rational Thinker

That's the way it's always been in Miami. We only sell out when we're playing a great team. By the way, your Gayturds have been in the same amout of National Championship games this decade (2) as the Canes. Suck on that!

You can't nor will ever hold our jock.

own***

And lets see in Gainsville the only thing to do there is go to football games or have intercourse with your cousins/farm animals.

In Miami you have hundreds of things to do

Andre DeBouse said that he "doesn't want to be another Percy Harvin". At Florida, that's exactly what he's gonna be. I think he may take a long look at what Whip brings here at the U and sign with us.

Gimmic offense = No NFL

What drama is Bryce having?

he is just waiting to see who we sign to make a decision

Pryor was a drama queen not Bryce.

And yes, I do think that you are more of a fan if you actually attended the school. (Paid tuition, went to class, participated in events on campus and graduated.)

Posted by: Irrational Thinker | January 28, 2009 at 05:07 PM

No, that makes you a graduate. Your Floriduh Degree is not serving you well. You cannot judge a fan based on his being a student of a school. That's like saying you're not allowed to watch the game on TV if you didn't go to either school. Or you're not allowed to enter the stadium unless you're a student of either university (I'm sure your stadium would be half-empty if that were the case) Or, You cannot be a fan of that NFL team unless you worked for their organization. The NCAA is in it to make money and the money they make is off fan bases, whether they went to that school or not.

Manny,
Special request: For signing day (Feb 4th), please do a live blog updating us on all of the signings (for The U) as players sign their letter of intent. For us workers we need someone to keep us updated!!

I was told this morning that it is "extremely likely" that a DC is hired before Signing Day. While I don't have any names yet, it appears that Shannon is moving much faster on this hire than on the OC position. There were reports that Shannon was out on the West Coast a couple of weeks ago interviewing, everyone assumed that he was interviewing an OC candidate, but it has since come out that Whipple hiring was 3 weeks in the works, so it's possible he could have been interviewing a DC candidate.

The same fellow Hurricane Club members that told me about Nix, Marve, Young, and Whip are the same people telling me this, so I believe they have reliable contacts.

^ What are the names being thrown around?

I'll get on that for all of you.

From a Tennessee Vols web site:

MEMPHIS - Melrose High School senior linebacker Greg King is enjoying this, being one of the most sought college prospects in the Southeast.

Last weekend, King had the red carpet rolled out for him in Knoxville, where the 6-3, 200-pound standout was joined by his mother and grandmother on an official visit to Tennessee.

This weekend, he'll travel to Miami, where King will be an official guest of a Hurricane program that already boasts one former Melrose star in sophomore running back Graig Cooper.

King, who's first official visit was to Texas Tech last month, said Auburn has also emerged as one of four leaders for his services, adding he will likely make an official visit to the school on Jan. 30.

"Auburn came in late, and they're supposed to come and see me (at Melrose on Thursday)," King said.

King, one of two remaining uncommitted players among The Commercial Appeal's 10 Most Wanted football recruits, told the Knoxville News Sentinel, "I know where I'm going," following his visit to Tennessee last Sunday.

However, with Auburn now making a late charge and King still planning to make a pair of college visits, much could change before Feb. 4, the first day of the national signing period.

"The kids I met coming up here, it's phenomenal," Whipple said. "Walking in and seeing them work out [Monday] morning, I get goose bumps just thinking about it. Randy said, 'Hey, we're going to start spring practice Feb. 24.'

"Being around these guys, I want to start next week."

CAN'T WAIT!! GO CANES!!

From Allcanes.com:

With Young gone, one has to wonder where Shannon turns for defensive coordinator help. Rumors are flying that he'll take over the reigns himself, but as a devotee of JJ that doesn't make sense. You have to believe Johnson is advising Randy to focus on being a head coach, while letting position coaches do their job.

In a perfect world, ol' Tommy Tuberville would sign on for a year or two to help his old buddy Shannon. Give back to the program that propelled him to that next level. That Auburn money is still rolling in. Spend two years putting the Canes back on the map and mentor guys like Micheal Barrow and Clint Hurtt. Keep things in the family and pass some knowledge down to the next generation of coaches.

Again, a pipe dream from the perspective of a Miami fan, but that'd definitely be a perfect scenario. Hopefully Plan B is is solid in it's own right. Until that's in place, celebrate this Whipple hire. A big move for the Canes today.

UM

From a Tucson, AZ. website:

University of Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops is in a win-win situation. It appears there is something to the rumors that Miami coach Randy Shannon is interested in the Wildcats’ coach.

Herbal:

I've posted comments against Shannon's coaching ability. To answer your question. I didn't feel we were going to beat UF until the game started.

I suffered through 2007 and was pleasantly surprised at times in 2008. I'm pretty optimistic about 2009, but only because I think our talent will eventually overcome our coaching.

I just wrote a bunch of junk above...am pretty tired.

We were too inconsistent last year for us to be optimistic about any game. Once we show consistency, I'll be optimistic. Otherwise, I won't know what Canes team to expect.
