If you haven't heard by now, the University of Miami is dangerously close to having to find a replacement for another coordinator position. Oklahoma State has come after defensive coordinator Bill Young, offering him $700,000 to leave the program -- much more than he currently makes with the Canes. Even the highest paid coordinators rarely make more than $500,000.
When reached by phone Monday morning by The Miami Herald, Young told our Barry Jackson "I'm very torn." Young said he would let us know once he reached a decision (possibly tonight), but we believe there is a strong chance Young will opt to leave. Here's Barry's story.
Oklahoma City is where Young was born and raised and Oklahoma State is where Young played outside linebacker and defensive end from 1965 to 67. Young, 61, has spent 22 seasons as a defensive coordinator. He came over from Kansas last season to replace Tim Walton. The Canes didn't perform very well -- especially on run defense, where it ranked 75th. But Miami still ranked 28th in the nation in total defense (317.4 yards) and seventh in pass defense (165.6 yards) -- despite intercepting just four passes all year.
Young's loss would hurt Miami, especially since the team is in the midst of searching for an offensive coordinator. I spoke to two sources this afternoon who told me coach Randy Shannon is hoping to hire an offensive coordinator by the end of this week, most likely Friday. Now, it appears likely he'll be looking to fill another position in the coming weeks.
FYI, I would be I highly surprised if Shannon would simply take over as defensive coordinator should Young leave. Shannon said last season when he was searching for a defensive coordinator there was too much responsibility as the head coach.
Urban Liar couldn’t get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich during the peanut butter scare from his colleagues, because he is scum and the other coaches hate him.
Randy, keep on doing what you are doing and national championships will continue to flow to Coral Gables.

I think our defensive coordinator is leaving because Oklahoma State has a booster (Boone Pickens) who is an oil baron with deep pockets. In 2006, Boone donated $165 million to the Oklahoma State athletic department. Miami will not be able to match the money. Randy, time to start looking for a new defensive coordinator.

Randy, time to start looking for a clue.
Say buh-bye Bryce. Arthur won't let his bro make the same mistake he did.

With the talent Shannon and co. is raking in, we don't need coaches. LOL
Posted by: 360Cane | January 20, 2009 at 04:14 PM
How about Tuberville and Shannon as co-HC/DC? I know, I know, but what's wrong with dreaming?
I do know one thing. Comrade Shalalalalala DAMN WELL better pony up and at least match OSU's offer. If they do and he still leaves, well fair enough. But to just let him leave or to insult him by offering a raise that is still thousands or hundreds of thousands less than OSU offers would be damning to this program and it's supposed intention to return to dominance.
When leaving the Big East, we were sold the same line about how it was going to help the program and help provide the money to pay our coaches closer to market salaries. Where is all that money now?
We're going to have to face facts sooner or later. Comrade Shalalalala made the astute judgement that Miami could either stay in the Big East and cash in based in our own success in a given year, or we could jump ship to the ACC, where revenues are shared communistically and the University would collect the same amount of cash every year no matter whether they try to put out a respectable football team or not. Well, well, interesting to see what's happened since then isn't it? Shalalalala and the brass at Miami know that all they need to do to keep the ball rolling is put on a show pretending to care about Canes football so that they can keep abusing as many season ticket holders and Hurricanes Club members as possible.
Face it, Shalalala is the problem. Just look at what has happened to the on field results since she arrived in CG.
Bring the heat, I know a lot of people are going to take issue with me here, but let's face the facts. We all love University of Miami Football. But the University of Miami couldn't care less about us, well, unless you spell it u$ that is.

Okay, now that Young is gone. RS is having a hard time trying to land an OC, from what we are seeing. has gotten rejected by many. Looks like they see the writing on the wall. Will go with a mid level OC with potential. DC will be from within. That's all for now.

yeah... come on caines...let young go and hire martinez... he is not getting it done at ga. he might can handle a weak mid-level conference like the acc but the sec is too much for him. that way the dawgs will have to hire another dc since richt doesnt seem to have the oyster to fire him... the dawgs have the talent but the defense is the weak link and the reason florida gators are champs instead of ga. go dawgs....

Damn.... This off-season is the total opposite of what we had last year... But all is not lost. Randy is no stranger to adversity and UM's administration knew adversity was on its way when they promoted him to HC.
Shannon's D won an NC in 2001 and was a bad call away from winning another one in 2002, so getting him involved as DC is not a bad thing and is the affordable way out of this mess. Sure, he has a lot on his plate already, but realistically, what other options do we have? If anything, this frees up funds for a high-powered OC.
WE NEED TO RALLY AROUND SHANNON NOW!!!! THIS IS HIS DARKEST HOUR!!! HE'S A TRUE CANE!!!
FUKC YOUNG!!!
LET'S GO CANES!!!

Spare youself the aggravation of talkling about Will Martinez coming to the U.
He wouldn't get anywhere near that trainwreck. Going from UGA to UM would be a HUGE step downward.
U should just roll up the football program and quit. Or just continue to be the laughing stock of football until Randy gets the axe.
RANDY IS KILLING YOUR PROGRAM No way Young was going to hang around Marble Mouth and endure ANOTHER year of that nonsense.

Young is a douche-bag! Way to bail, that is how you show your integrity. Show him the money! Shannon needs to wrap up the OC story and tackle the DC one more quickly.

1st of all, to all the Gator and other fans on the blog, our recruiting class will not fall apart. Bill Young only had a hand in recruiting Luther Robinson, no one else on the defense. To all true UM fans, do not get into the hype that some members of the media (not Manny) are trying to portray about the program. As far as UM not "ponying up" and paying Young $700 K for his services, most teams do not pay their coordinators more that $500 K, so I don't think this is a case of UM being cheap (that has been the case in the past), I believe this is a case of OSU really wanting Young and over paying for him. UM will have a proven/veteran Pro-Style OC by Friday. As far as getting an DC, don't you think that Randy had a list of guys that he wanted after he replaced Walton last year? Bill Young just happened to be on the top of the list and took the job. While it is a loss to the program, I believe that this replacement will not be as hard as it was to find an OC. IMHO, Coach Shannon knows little about offense. Defense is his fortay, thus, he will be able to find a replacement a lot easier. I agree with Coach Shannon that no one on the staff is ready for the responsibility yet, thus he will find a capable replacement. He lured Young from a good job in Kansas, he can do the same again with another coach. Besides that, they are probably other DC's out there who have lost their jobs, due to the HC getting fired. I believe that LSU got rid of their DC and made an upgrade by hiring John Chavis, who was formerly at Tennessee. I don't know much about LSU's former DC, but he may be a good choice. What about the former DC at Auburn? What about a proven Defensive assistant on USC's staff since Nick Holt left for Washington? Point is, this came at a bad time, but there are lots of options that UM has. I am sure that Coach Shannon and Kirby Holcutt will make the right decision.
Posted by: Cane4Life | January 20, 2009 at 05:22 PM
I feel sorry for Shannon because his lack of Personnel Management skills is what is killing him right now. I know its not his fault that coach Young is leaving but getting Young was a Coup and I doubt that he will be able to get a quality replacement. The biggest problem is that Shannon is a control freak who sadly doesn’t have a clue. It’s truly a sad for the University of Miami Football Program. 3rd DC in 3 years, and 2nd Offensive coordinator in 2 years. At the very least, this poor coaching retention shows that Shannon has poor decision making skills.

HEY 407, PLEASE, NAME ONE QUALITY CANDIDATE THAT SHANNON COULD'VE HIRED BESIDES TIM WALTON AND PATRICK NIX WHEN HE FINALLY GOT THE JOB IN NOVEMBER OF 06' HUH, NAME ONE...

Their is probably a very good DC on a 2nd tier SEC team (a team that will never win the SEC, much less get to the SEC championship game) that UM can hire away. Believe me TRUE Canes fans, the sky is not falling. With all of the talent that we recruited last year and the crop that we will be bringing in, the DC position at UM sells itself. Lets get an OC by Friday and then lock up a DC. Randy knows defense and has prospects lined up!!! This will all be an after thought while we are watching the spring game. Don't let these gutless Gayturd fans who have nothing to do with their time get you down and break down your morale as regards the program, coaching staff or team. We are fans of the University of Miami, the greatest football team over the past 26 years!! We will be back on top soon and all of these gutless scum bags who come on here won't be heard from again!! Keep the faith!! Go Canes!!
