Recruiting picture starting to clear up

The recruiting visits are finished. The final phone calls and pushes have been made. Now, all that's left to do is wait. The Miami Hurricanes have 20 committed players heading into Wednesday, the first official day high school football players can sign national letters of intent.

They could end up adding a few more before then. But we know of at least two players Miami was chasing after who won't be among those. Earlier today and as expected, Cleveland Glennville High All-American offensive lineman Marcus Hall announced he had chosen the hometown Ohio State Buckeyes over the Canes. And, Powder Springs, Ga. McEachern High tight end Terrell Mitchell (who never officially got a Miami offer or made a UM visit) made a commitment to Kentucky.

Gateway tight end Sheldon Richardson will choose between the Canes and Missouri Wednesday at 1 p.m. The good news for Miami: It looks like the Canes are very much in the hunt for a few other top-notch recruits including St. Louis' Sheldon Richardson, a blue-chip tight end/defensive tackle prospect. Richardson is set to announce his decision around 1 p.m. (noon CST) Wednesday. I caught up with St. Louis Post-Dispatch correspondent Nate Latsch who told me he thinks the Canes have a great shot at yanking Richardson away from Missouri. Latsch will provide the news for us with a story shortly after Richardson's announcement.

Richardson figures to be one of a handful suspenseful National Signing Day stories to follow if you are a Canes fan. Two will involve Canes commitments Kayvon Webster, a cornerback from Monsignor Pace and defensive tackle Luther Robinson from Fort Pierce Westwood. The others will involve non-committed recruits. They are: Washington D.C-area offensive lineman Peter White and Nassau Community College offensive tackle Andrew Tiller.

> Regarding Webster, I spoke to Monsignor Pace athletic director Joe Zaccheo who told me he expects Webster to "stick with his Canes commitment" when he announces his decision at noon Wednesday. I'll be there to see if that happens or if Webster jumps ship to the University of South Florida, where a few of his high school teammates are headed.

> Robinson, meanwhile, will decide between the Canes, Gators and Golden Knights at a 9:30 a.m. press conference at his school. His high school coach Waides Ashmon told me Monday Robinson came back from his Canes visit this weekend very happy. "The UM trip was scheduled last for a reason," Ashmon said. "He wanted to compare his feelings and I think he got to do that. I know he enjoyed his visit to Miami very much."

> White, who visited Miami this past weekend, is expected to announce his decision Wednesday morning. I've been trying to reach White's coach for an update and will post something once I get it. White is expected to decide between Miami, Maryland and Tennessee. We will have a correspondent there to tell us what happens when he makes his announcement Wednesday morning.

> Tiller, who also visited Miami this past weekend, told Canesport he will make his choice between Miami, Rutgers and Syracuse (where his former JUCO coach is now a secondary coach) at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. I think Tiller, a New York area kid, is headed to Syracuse.

> Jacksonville Parker linebacker Sam Barrington will make his choice between UM, Illinois and South Florida at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. His coach John Scible told me last week Barrington was planning to make his announcement at a downtown Jacksonville night club and that looks like it still will be the case. I think Barrington will pick Miami.

> I'm still waiting back on a phone call from the coach of South Carolina offensive lineman Quinton Washington for an update. Art Chase told me last week Washington would reach a decision before Wednesday and call the colleges he wasn't going to choose to let them know first. School officials at Timberland High said the school's signing day ceremony is supposed to happen at around 3 p.m. -- after classes are over. I was told by South Carolina preps writer Washington is a Gamecock lock last week. One website reported today UM is not even in it anymore.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST... Check out our new online show The Recruiting Report. It's only our first effort and it's nothing extra special. But it's a start. Hopefully we'll be able to continue this show on a weekly basis starting in the fall and bring in special guests and recruits for interviews.

Wrap'em up! GO C-A-N-E-S!

First

Go Canes!!!!!

Thanks, Manny. Are you going to the UM event Wednesday evening?

it doesn't look good for any of the bigtime O-Liners... We will not be able to get back to elite status without the "Big Uglies"!!!

Too bad on Hall!

Manny: How about the two Hargrove Academy kids (Massey & ...)?

Finally, did the TE from Idaho vist this past weekend, and is he still sticking with UCLA)?

Great job with the new Recruiting Report! (i just checked-it out). How often will you update it?

Manny, thanks for your fine recruiting reports throughout the entire cycle.

Excellent effort and very timely and on-the-money reports.

You beat the Sun Sentinnel guy hands down!! NO CONTEST!!

Way to keep digging, Manny. You really think the U has a shot at Richardson? What like 70-30 against? It might be a big get if it happens, certainly will boost signing class ratings.

Manny,

I love The Recruiting Report! Excellent job!

Keep up the great work!

Well - it is not looking good for the O-line prospects - if Washington is not coming, Hall is going to OSU, Tiller staying in New Jersey or New York, and White up in the air - it is not going to be a good day Wednesday. Then Bryce Brown will see that the O-line players we had a chance at all went somewhere else, and POW, there goes Bryce to Oregon.... Now we even have competition from South Florida - why a kid would want to go there over UM is beyond me - I can understand some kid going to Florida, FSU, USC, Notre Dame, LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, but USF? What is this world comign to. All of these kids knew that they had a chance to play early at UM since the O-line jobs are wide open, why then are they all going somewhere else? There is something here that does not meet the eye - Let's hope we can salvage this class with Richardson, otherwise it is a downer after last year's class. Let's wait and see what happens, but I am not too optimistic.

Manny, Did any of the new recruits start classes at UM in January '09?

Manny,
In your opinion do U think Peter White is going to pick the Canes on Wednesday? I'd really love for the Canes to get him! I believe he's a diamond in the rough!

WhatishappeningattheU,

I think it's an OL Coach issue, coupled with the inconsistent W-L track record/history of the current staff.

Manny,

ESPN lists a few recruits still considering Miami that you did not mention for example, Where is Tevin McCaskill headed? It seems as though Miami didn't go hard enough at some of the big time secondary recruits down south like Carter and McCaskill. Also, anything on Tana Patrick, Daniel Campbell or Bobby Massie?

@ WhatishappeningattheU,
Don't worry about those OL recruits that chose other school rather than the U. I never really expected Marcus Hall to come here when his high school coach is Ted Ginn Sr. The U has never gotten the bi time OL recruits, we've always gotten average OL's and made them big time (at least when Kehoe was here). Besides South Florida is loaded next year with big time OL recruits such as Jose Jose, Brandon Linder, & the Northwestern OL propect (his name escapes me right now)! We'll be fine, just tell Randy to save the rest of the schollies for next years loaded class! Go Canes!!!

Another name that i forgot to mention was Frankie Telfort. How come Miami didn't go after him?

Big Finish: time to bring in the closer! Let's keep everyone that has committed (including Brown, Webster and Robinson) and bring home Richardson, White, Barrington, and McCaskill. After those 24 it is all gravy!

Boodambudoodoo, good question. I would like to now a little bit more about what is going on with guys like Campbell, Massie, McCaskill, and so forth. Are the Canes still going after them and what are our chances?

Boodambudoodoo, supposedly b/c they already have enough undersixd LB's at the moment + grade or character concerns...

must have been something other than his athletic ability or size, cuz we're going after barrington so late...i prefer an athlete who is projected to do really well by both rivals and espin.

thx for the update. hopefully manny can clear some stuff up with insider info

@ Boodambudoodoo,

Tana Patrick canceled his trip to Miami because he's a going to Alabama due to Saban hiring Auburns' linebackers coach (Forget the coaches name) but Patrick is an Alabama lock! I've also read that Massie wants to play in the SEC and Alabama the school to beat for him right now (wow imagine Alabama OL with him and DJ Fluker...SCARY)!!! Campbell I believe still has academic issues and as for McCaskill, I guess Miami has lost interest in the kid? I've believe he's an above average prospect who just needs to be coached up in order to become a stud!

For the life of me I don't understand why Miami didn't go hard after Frankie Telfort!!! I've heard that Miami was concerned about his lack of size playing linebacker, but HELLO...remember Sean Spence he was supposedly undersized and look what he turned out to be!!! I've lost many hours of sleep over this issue and I can't come up with a legit explanation on Miami's part?!

Miami signed 7 linebackers last year

I would like a few more OL prospects but don't forget that we have 5 OL commits to date, a couple that I believe are already enrolled and in the weight room: Brandon Washington OG,Jermaine Johnson OT,Cory White OT, Wheeler OG, and Bunche OG. The disappointing group from this past season has at least another season of experience and weight room. Then there are the redshirts from this past season that practiced on the scout team this past season, are in the weight room now and will be learning Whipple's offense during the Spring.

I agree with tranquilizar. We'll be alright, and with the early enrollments, learning the offense, and coach Whipple at the wheel, it'll be alright. Remember what Whip did with the UMass o-line when he got there, and I'm sure there were no "studs" on that line at the time.

You always want the number 1 recruit but I wouldnt mind just having Lamar Miller and maybe landing Jakari Gore next year along with BTW's Eduardo Clements. I'm very comfortable with having Lee Chambers and Cooper leading the charge until they get to Miami. I want baby J to do well but I dont think he will be our featured back next season. Signing B. Brown might mess up our chances with Clememts and Gore next season. What do you guys think?

@ Category5Cane,
Miami signed 7 linebackers last year but isn't Sam Barrington a linebacker? Wouldn't you rather Frankie Telfort than Barrington?

What exactly did Whipple do with the UMass line? Did he coach them? Can you name one person on that UMass line? That D2 ball. Shannon whiffed at the end because the recruits saw the confusion on the staff. Thank god that clown will be gone in a year.

MCCASKILL? OH THATS THE DB THATS THE BACK GROUND OF DEBOSE'S WHEATIES CEREAL BOX? TOAST ANYONE? JUST TRIPPIN! ITS JUST HARD FACING MY CO WORKERS FROM SANFORD @ WORK EVERYDAY!

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MANNY ADDRESS WHY WE SIGNED SOME LOWER TIER LB'S, INSTEAD OF PURSUING TELFORT FROM OUR OWN BACKYARD. WHAT ABOUT McCASKILL?? ESPN HAS HIM RATED PRETTY HIGH FROM MIAMI NORTHWESTERN. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO HAVE MANNY TELL US WHAT HE THINKS ABOUT OUR CHANCES OF GETTING GORE AND CLEMENTS IF WE LAND MILLER AND BROWN THIS YEAR.

Teffort is only 5 foot 10.5 inches. Although he has a faster 40 I don't think his reacting or closing burst compares with Barrington who is 6'2". With his speed I wonder if Teffort ends up at safety.

The UMass line went from one of the worst to one of the best in D2. Gave up 90% fewer sacks and that has alot to do with Whipple's scheme. SOUP don't be so negative dude. Who would you have at HC then? Give me a legit name.

1 thing to think about, just cause an OL is rated as 4 or 5 star doesn't mean he will be great. Many of the best OL aren't 4 or 5 stars. That has to be the hardest position for the analysts to predict. A friend of mine was a 4 star lineman who went to UGA and was rated in the top 5 at his position. He is working in the real world now instead of playing on sundays. Dbrickshaw Ferguson was a 3 star for example and was a 1st round pick.

I agree with Brooklyn Cane, Miami has a tradition of recruiting athletic o-lineman, most of them not being heralded recruits, and turning them into stars anyone remember Mario Cristobal, Leon Searcy? And as far as I remember the same could be said about Bryan McKinnie (he didnt start playing football till his senior in high school) and he turned out pretty d**n good at the U (first round pick). In regards to the Frankie Telfort and the linebacker position, Miami recruits linebackers that fit the Da U mold, and playing style, apparently Telfort does not fit that mold (especially since he is being projected as safety on the college level, by most recruiting gurus). Believe me if the Miami coaches felt that Telfort fit their system they would have went after him and closed the deal, especially since two of Miami's top defensive coaches were former UM linebackers and know what to look for in a linebacker prospect.

. Who would you have at HC then? Give me a legit name.

There are NO legit names. YOU DONT PAY LEGIT !

Excellent example of how truly SCREWED U ARE

Great job Manny, you continue to outshine all the other competition. I thought the video was great. Keep it up!

Miami will be fine!! Everything will work out. By the way, That Lamar Miller is a hell of a back! I think Richardson will be a huge steal for the "U"! Go Canes!!

Uh oh, "We's building depths" is here.........let the idiocy begin.

I think Clements and Gore have been Canes fans there whole life so i think they will sign with UM but Florida State might be able to nap one of them from us considering the fact that we will have Bryce Brown, Lee Chambers, Damien Berry, Lamar Miller, and maybe even Greg Copper next season. Add Clements and Gore to that list and we are stacked at RB. Sounds like a bunch of transfers to me in 2011

why are ppl saying we can't get any o-line prospects we do have 5 like tranquilizar said and may add another with peter white. we brought studs in last year and rebuilding off of that this yr can't expect every yr to be number 1 in recruiting even though it dosen't mean anything when they hit college.this class is perfect to my standards we added players at key needs DB,OL,and RB that was the main focus with this class i would love to get richardson, white ,and barrington and save the rest for one hell of a 2010 class, need as much schollys as possible for them boy's out of south florida.

Canes can get whatever recruits they want and in the end it wont matter until they get a real head coach.
Randy Shannon is in wayyyyyyy over his head.
5-6-7 loss seasons are the norm at da U!

Is Lamar Miller, Bryce Brown and Ray Ray Armstrong going to help stop the run or block along the OL? Didnt Miami just give up nearly 1,000 yards rushing in their last few games? Where is their Oline?
Miami has NO SHOT this year and Randy Shannon will be given the boot.
Dont say I didnt warn you!
Let the OFFSEASON HYPE BEGIN because it will end once the season starts just like the past few years.

The class is ok. Shannon got lucky last year by signing the whole northwest class. No Qb's, No Wr's, 1 true CB, No TE's. Miami needs the coaching situation to be straightened out. This looks alot like a Coker class that you guys would kill.

Look at Whipple's record. He won his 1st year and then saw the program plummet to 3-8.

bobby massie to ole miss

yea randy is over his head firing nix what was he thinking? letting marve transfer will come back and haunt da U!!! OHH AND NOT STARTING THE TOP LB IN THE NATION ARTHUR BROWN BECAUSE HE DIDN'T KNOW THE SCHEME WAS MISERABLE!!!! OHH AND HE SHOULD HAVE STARTED SEAN SPENCE ALL YEAR BUT THE KID WAS WEARING DOWN AS THE YEAR WENT ON. MAN RANDY DOSEN'T KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING AND HE IS GETTING THE RECRUITS MIAMI NEEDS BUT MAN WHY WOULD RANDY DO THAT? U GUYS ARE FUNNY I MEAN YES RANDY MADE SOME MISTAKES AND THE ONLY THING I CAN REMEBER IS A COUPLE OF QUESTIONABLE TIMEOUTS BUT USUALLY THAT WOULD ALSO GO ON THE OC WHICH GOES BACK TO MY FIRST POINT NIX. A PERSON THAT WANTED TO CHANGE MIAMI FACE THE PRO STYLE OFFENSE TO THE SPREAD WE NEVER USED THE SPREAD OR OPTION ALWAYS BEEN PRO BUT YEA RANDY DOSEN'T KNOW ANYTHING. AND I GUESS JIMMY JOHNSON COULDN'T COACH EITHER.

Waaaaa, waaaaa, waaaaa!
Why didn't they go after this guy!?
Shannon sucks!
Waaaaa, waaaaa, waaaaa!

2009 class now #6 per ESPN.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/classrankings

You may have heard of them.
U know, they're the ones that actually grade on need instead of points like scout and rivals.
They seem to think Shannon's getting it done this year.
This is only his SECOND CLASS! And they're both LOADED!
Damn, STFU!

Shannon hired Nix so if Shannon didnt know he would was a spread guy. Oline stinks and Miami wiffs on all JUCO kids. The Olines he got, 2 are definite redshirts, another has played in over a year. Way to go Randy. Get rid of the clown. 7-6 at best next year with in state loses to FSU and USF. Thanks for making Miami #4 in the state.

rawpimple Mr. Neagtive. Thats all i have to say

Right on UM95. Consistent top 10 classes with every once in a while #1 classes will win you a lot of games!

CanesForLife, where did you see that about Massie?

SOUP AND RAWPIMPLE: FIRST SOUP: DID U SEE HOW MANY W/R WE GOT LAST YR Y ADD MORE AND AJ HIGHSMITH IS A QB BUT THAT MEANS WE HAVE 4 QB AND THEY ARE ALL SOPHMORE EXCPET ONE AND RECHECK THE DB LIST AGAIN I THINK WE SIGN 4 OR 5 AND U ARE RITE ON THE TIGHT END BUT THATS IT AND RAWPIMPLE: ARE U JUST TRYING TO MAKE UP AN ARGUMENT? PPL JUST SAID WE ADDED 5 O- LINE MAN TO THIS CLASS SO WERE U WAS SAYING WE HAVE NO O-LINE U CAN CUT THAT SHORT- AND D-LINE WE ADDED A FEW TO THAT LIST MAN IF UR GOING TO MAKE AN ARGUMENT DO UR RESEARCH ON THE TEAM U HAVE BEEF WITH.

SOUP CHECK THE G-TECH GAME'S AND TELL ME IF U EVER SEEN PATRICK NIX DO THE SPREAD THEIR? COME ON MAN WHAT IS UR ARGUMENT EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT WHEN HE GOT FIRED ALL OF A SUDDEN HE SAYS HE WANTED TO OPEN THINGS UP. NIX WAS A LAST RESORT IF NOT TELL ME WHO WAS OUT THERE THAT RANDY COULD HIRE IN THAT SHORT PERIOD OF TIME? PLEASE ANSWER.
