Hurricanes National Signing Day blog

Good morning Canes fans. Today is National Signing Day. Or, as UM recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt once told me, Report Card day for him and the University of Miami coaching staff. It's the day all the hard work they've put in chasing after high school seniors becomes official or unofficial.

As many of you know, the Hurricanes had a collection of 20 commitments before the final 48 hours before NSD began Monday morning. After last night, they still do. Several recruits out-of-state recruits who visited UM the past two weekends have already decided they are passing on the Canes.

Last night, Jacksonville Parker linebacker Sam Barrington became the latest when he stunned friends and family by choosing the USF Bulls over the Canes and Illinois. Others did the same before Barrington. Cleveland offensive lineman Marcus Hall chose Ohio State. And more could end up doing the same. We just don't know yet.

Lamar Miller signed with the Canes Wednesday. Throughout the day, The Miami Herald will have reporters and correspondents following recruiting. I'll be on the road at Miami Killian for Lamar Miller's announcement at 10 a.m., Miami Pace for cornerback Kayvon Webster at noon and coach Randy Shannon's press conference at UM at 2 p.m. But reporters will be checking in with me to provide updates on other potential Canes and we will post stories online as soon as we get them. I will try to update the blog as much as I can while I'm on the road.

Here is a schedule of key recruits for you to follow with a few notes...

> OL Peter White, St. John's College Prep, Washington, D.C.: White is expected to announce his decision at around 8:45 a.m. There were rumblings late Tuesday night he had already told coaches at Maryland he was headed there. White visited UM last weekend and was also considering Tennessee. We'll have reporter there to send a story. UPDATED at 9:01 a.m.: White has chosen Maryland. Check for a story shortly.

> OL Andrew Tiller, Nassau Community College: The big 6-6, 330 pound tackle prospect is supposed to make a decision from his home around 9 a.m. I've got his phone number and will try to find out what happens shortly after he decides. UPDATED 12:01 p.m.: Rivals.com reports Tiller has chosen Syracuse.

> DL Luther Robinson, Fort Pierce Westwood: His coach Waides Ashmon told me to expect an announcement at 9:30 a.m. Robinson made a few visits to Florida and UCF, but is said to be expected to sign with the Canes. We'll find out soon enough. I'll call Ashmon for an update and interview if possible afterward. UPDATED at 9:58 a.m.: Robinson sticks with the Canes. I'll have an interview later today.

> CB Kayvon Webster, Monsignor Pace: I'll be at Pace at noon when Webster makes his announcement. There have been reporters Webster is still not 100 percent convinced on UM and is still considering USF. I'm not buying. I think Webster picks UM in the end. UPDATED at 12:31 p.m.: Webster spurns the Canes and shock the world by picking USF. He told me he made his decision about an hour before coming in. He said early playing time was the biggest factor. I believe the fact two of his Pace teammates are a bigger reason -- WR Sterling Griffin and WR Derrick Hopkins.

> TE/DT Sheldon Richardson, St. Louis Gateway High: Reporter Nate Latsch, a freelancer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, will be there to provide us with a story from what could be Miami's biggest steal of this class. Richardson, a Missouri commitment, visited UM this past weekend. He's expected to make his decision at around 12:30 p.m. our time. UPDATED at 12:37 p.m.: Richardson has decided to stay home and stick with Missouri.

> OL Quinton Washington, St. Stephen's Timberland, S.C.: All signs have pointed to the fact Washington, a UM visitor this past weekend, is not headed here. It's either going to be Michigan or South Carolina. But you never know if this becomes a stunner when the official announcement is made at 3 p.m.

I said earlier, continue to check back throughout the day for updates, notes, photos and quotes from players, coaches, recruits and recruiting analysts.

Wow, you must have a pathetic existence if you will hold on to that one for a week. I guess everyone can't actually have a life. Go away Gator, no one cares.

Manny the link you posted dont work...

Good for Webster, hope he does well @ USF... you the kid's from 305 gotta give some luv..

where u see that lokie?

Webster nor Barrington would have seen the field next year, or maybe at all for that matter... Webster does not want to compete with Ray Ray, Telemaque, and crew...

I cannot blame them for their decisions, but I can blame them for the way in which they conducted their press conferences!

Do not think for one moment that Webster's actions will go unnoticed with the current Canes... I am very excited about next years game at USF, because I think that it is the beginning of a new rivalry

Hey We's building depths -- why don't you go over to the gayturds blog and stay off of ours. Wow, you got a WR -- we got 8 studs last year.....and you got a LB & DT. I would take Sean Spence, Arthur Brown, Jordon Futch, Colin McCartney, Allen Bailey and Marcus Forston any day of the week.

GO CANES!!!

It’s often said that defenses win championships. Let’s get more detailed, championships are won in the trenches and more importantly the defensive line.Gary Pinkel and his coaching staff picked up his crown jewel of this recruiting class when St. Louis Missouri native and Scout.com 5 Star prospect Sheldon Richardson chose to stay home and play for the Missouri Tigers.

Hello kehoe. Being an internet loser 24/7 is a job that keeps U up ha?

This class still has its share amount of impact players. I need spring practice to hurry up and get here.

Sheldon Richardson has chosen Missouri. Canes are finished. Number 20 could be Bryce Brown. Oh well. Not a great finish, but still a very good class. Off to UM.

This is what Kavon Webster saw at Saftey, can you blame him?:

C.J. Holton S 6-2 195
Vaughn Telemaque S 6-2 180
C.J. Odom S 6-0 198
Joseph Wylie S 6-2 171

Then add in big Ray-Ray:
Ray Ray Armstrong S 6-4 215

Webster knew he wasn't going to see the field, he didn't have a chance to start to begin with, so he hid his insecurity with the fact that he know he has a better chance playing at USF, by trying to clown Miami.

That position is totally not an area of need for us... w'eva Webster.

thanks, lokie. that stinks. i guess i can go back to work now. glad we kept everyone except for webster, brought back sanders. would have been nice to get a few more, but there is always next year. so who is left, brown? anyone else?

18. Lamar Miller
19. Billy Sanders

+

Waiting on:
Brown
Whoever else they have up their sleeve?

I thin the U should offer Manny a scholarship!

Florida's 2009 class is officially loaded. Jelani Jenkins' 11 a.m. pledge to Florida could bolster the Gators into the top five in almost every recruiting ranking, possibly higher.

Jenkins is Florida's third five-star recruit to sign, according to Rivals.com. Pretty impressive that the Gators talked him into sitting behind Brandon Spikes for a year, as Florida returns its 22-deep defensive roster for 2009. Huge get for Florida.

Jenkins makes 15 signees so far.

Urban is better than U

Big time playmakers arent afraid of competition. If Webster went to USF to see the field early he must be worried about not being good enough to play for the U

this idioit is too funny, i would love to play uf before 2013 but we will have to wait on that date. i think u better be worried about lsu, south carolina, and possibly tennesse. it aint looking to good for uf, look at the bigger picture and that is .worry about the teams in ur own confrence buddy. jesus had a hater miami has one as well and its the guy that live at his computer desk.

Posted by: pay attention to the U | February 04, 2009 at 12:30 PM

great reply. lots of babbling. No info.

Save the scholly's for next year, when Miami Dade and Broward will have more talent than even last year! I dont think some of the decommits are that big of a deal, as long as we clean up next year...

u don't beleive me umm south carolina has a stacked db check it out u seen what lane kiffin took from uf o and do i really have to say what lsu has done there is info just look it up be worried about the teasm u play in the immediate future buddy its all truth

GO CANES!!!

Thanks for all your work Manny. Next year we will have more scholarships to offer. Go Canes!! Let's get ready for Spring ball!

Damnit man, I thought Webster would be a Cane, oh well.

Losing Barrington and Webster means nothing.... let's just focus on spring ball. Go Canes!!

Hey Manny, If Webster wasn't ready to compete for his spot then he isn't in the mold of the current 'Canes Shannon & Co. are recruiting and bringing in to UM

Hope he get's his early playing time at usf and is starting that very last game of the season when the 'Canes roll into tampa and AJ,Byrd,Benjamin,Collier & company roast him

I really doubt we'll be hearing from Bryce Brown too quickly. He's laying back and seeing who commits to where before he throws out his decision. I am starting to have doubts about Bryce. If he's actually going to such lengths to make his decision I'm not sure I want him here. It's all about the U here ... not all about Bryce Brown.

Guess with these assorted jerks/lizards hanging around our website, you can only conclude one thing: they are still soooo bitter that the U had their number for soooo long and won soooo many NCs while they wallowed in insignificance, that they have to grab every opportunity to feed their poor little bruised collective egos. As far as player ratings, for example, LSU has had top classes for several years, and they still went 7-5. Many 5-stars have already peaked in high school, while the 3-stars you disparage often have huge upside potential. Gayturd fans, what goes around comes around, so enjoy your dynasty delusions while you can.

Wanted more OL.

Losing Webster? Safety was not a position of need. Picking up Sanders at TE a position of need more than negates that.

Losing Barrington? That hurts. LB was a position of need.

RB. Bryce would be nice but Miller and James are more than signed. They want to be Canes. They are not afraid of competition,..., and James is already here in school, in the weightroom, and will be learning the offense at spring practice.

Bryce, Arthur, and their family sound like good people. This advisor, Butler, sounds shady. If Bryce signs anywhere else, do you think that Butler will ever get the ear of a UM coach again after the way he has used their name for his other clients? I hope that the Bruce family wakes up and sees that Butler is only interested in Butler.

Urban is better than U

Everyone is in tilted to their own opinion. Just because some douche bag gator fan spouts off at the mouth doesn't make it fact.

Holy, there isn't a single post over on Gator Clause.

If depths was on top of his game he would know that LR is a cane. Sorry he didn't spurn UM like you wanted him eat a d i c k

Early:
1. Jermaine Johnson

15. Cory White
16. Shayon Green
17. Jared Wheeler
18. Lamar Miller

jamal, ray ray, and both brandons are isnt impact players. With the way bunche works out I think he might get some PT too. Red shirt lamar miller ( put him on practice sqad.) A.J. might be able to compete for that back up qb job. Luther well be able to come in and be a fresh body on the d line. And the rest of the players who make the field will help on kick offs. Its not last years class put its still a good one. espn has us ranked #6.

Go Canes!!!!!

Webster said the opportunity to play early is what ultimately swayed him. Considering UM has four other defensive backs I wouldn't call it a huge loss. But I really like Webster as a player. Just another sign you have to respect USF as an up-and-coming power. It certainly isn't just the Big 3 anymore.

Posted by: Manny Navarro |

right on all points.. as i've predicted earlier, USF vs UM will be game of the year for UM... Last Game of the season.

Kayvon Webster is scared to compete. The U doesn;t need anybody like that. Go to USF and suck at it.

I thought Atlcane was kidding, but Gator Clause has not had 1 post on their recruiting blog! They must "all" be on the Tennessee blog as well as ours!

Go 'canes!

I am sure we will lose Robinson now that Sanders has signed with Miami. This class is looking quite special in terms of need!

Sonny,

Is CJ Odom coming? Or is that old? Last I asked he had disappeared...

Jenkins is Florida's third five-star recruit to sign, according to Rivals.com.

.....stargazer!!

As an outsider looking in - I would like to throw in my 2 cents:

I'm a native Miamian, an LSU grad and a soft UM fan. But a UM fan just the same.

First off, UM's class will be right up there with the best this yr - regardless of which "uncommitted" signs or doesn't sign.

Bryce Brown, eh. What is all the love for this guy.

He comes out of tumbleweed country and never ran against any quality defenses.

His brother Arther has proven that these hayseeds can't compete with our south Florida athletes. Get rid of both a get 2 scholarships.

Guaranteed, Brown won't come close to Lamar Miller and others in your backfield - he lacks the experience of playing against quality defenses.

UM will do fine regardless of his decision. Which take me to the most important point:

Mark "Whip" Whipple.

I've known of Whip for sometime now. Our (LSU) OL coach, brought in by Saban, was a former player and coach under Whip. I remember researching this guy's past and that's where I first heard of Mark Whipple.

I'm sure most of you guy's know of his very positive and winning past. But, what I haven't read on this blog - is his remarkable ability to turn "totally awful offensive linemen" into top quality scrimmage busters.

He (Whip) will significantly reduce the number of sacks and tackles for loss while producing multiple 1000+ yrd rushers and WR's, each season he's at UM.

He will do this by "teaching and communicating" to both his coaches and players! Nix didn't.

He has a very provable past of accomplishing this everywhere he's been. And if that's not convincing enough.

That LSU coach I was talking about. He will join Tony Sparano and others in agreeing with the above statements and will credit Whip with all the success they have had.

Many others have said the same about this guy, he's the real deal.

Oh, and he will teach someone to follow after him, if he goes after a couple of seasons. With your talent pool though, I think it will be hard for him to leave until he gets at least 1 maybe 2 titles.

Just think of this simple point;

Whip's offenses will break all of UM's offensive records. Scoring & yards per play - game - season. Including sacks allowed and TFL etc. RB's, QB's and WR's will set individual school - conference and national records. He's done this everywhere he's been, expect it. This will happen!

Now, include a "Shannon defense" with this nuclear powered offense.

As they say in Kansas - "Katy bar the door."

What is the deal with Antonio Harper? Is he enrolling this year?

What a disappointment. UM couldn't steal a single top recruit away from another school. In the end, sure they got a strong class, but it is made up of guys who were either enamored with the 'Cane mystique and just had to play at the U (most) or saw Miami as their best opportunity to play early (few). Shannon and the coaches couldn't convince anyone like Florida did with the Jenkins kid from MD. Shannon couldn't beat out anyone but I see how he got beat with Webster. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

DUDE! BILLY SANDERS. that shocked me. god that saves the day to some degree. i had like no hope. at least the TE situation is somewhat better now.

Hey disappointed 'cane fan:

How did he get beat with regards to the Webster kid? It seems more that Webster didn't want to compete for playing time, or didn't want to redshirt which is probably what they told him to do. They got everything they needed and Dade county is loaded for next year....I think this class is at minimum a B+....would've been and A- if Sheldon Richardson came.

Ray Ray II

"the Canes secured Fort Pierce Westwood defensive tackle Luther Robinson, who decided to stick with Miami instead of going with Florida or UCF."

BOOHOO, the lure of cross-eyed country does not appeal to all!!!

Too bad we's building depths/ Disappointed 'canefan/kehoe

You got to look at it this WAY, the U got the players THAT DESIRED to come here. From experience, you only want those guys at the U who WANT to be here. Congrats to those who signed letters. Welcome to the time of your life and preparation for the NFL!

Where are all the updates today? Manny says check back throughout the day for updates, quotes, etc...and yet there's been nothing. Herald's coverage has been terrible today.

Are U serious dude? we went 5-7 a year ago and 7-6 last year and still are in the top 10. U are spoiled and ungrateful really nothing personal just what your statement screams. Once u see the results from this years recruiting then U will laugh at your own statement come this fall.

nuke spurned UF for UT. Officially speaking, he can't hold Debose's jock. U wanted Debose. He visited U and toyed with your emotions.

LMAO, I think you would love to see us crying over Dubose. NOT GONNA HAPPEN KEHOE!!! He is a good player and will do fine in your gimmicky offense. No prep for the NFL. ENJOY!!!

Hey! We's building stupid comments is here!! Rejoyce Canes fans, rejoyce. He can't be on his own blog, EVER! He has to come over here and hate on us. What a loser! If me makes another comment on here, he'll just comfirm what a complete loser, moron he is. Friggin UF alumni!!

The class looks good so far, you've got no reason to be disappointed. Needs are being addressed and we've got good talent coming in.

ESPN is confirming Brown will not sign today. It doesn't look good for him coming here, I wouldn't be surprised if UM pulled his offer.

Miller is a better back anyway, so screw Brown.

Nuke is Gator Bait. Major Wright will knock him out on sept 19
